In the West of Scotland league, Ayrshire’s bid for a third successive itle fell just short when the lost out on the itle in 2021 on ie difference to Dumbartonshire, despite being the only team to complete the five match series undefeated. Ayrshire’s opening fixture was conceded by Glasgow and was followed by a 4-4 draw away to Renfrewshire at Fereneze, a 5-3 win away to Sirlingshire at Grangemouth and a 4-4 draw at holme to Lanarkshire at Caprington. Ayrshire travelled to play Dumbartonshire at Clydebank & District in their final fixture in the knowledge that an emphaic win was required to retain the Wishart Trophy for a third season, but in the event the 4.5-3.5 win was not sufficient to overcome the superior ie difference over the campaign, and Ayrshire finished runners up to Dumbartonshire.
County A Team John Rushbury, assisted by Andrew Gilligan and Steven Wallace administered the A team in 2021 and will coninue in this role in 2022, along with the addiional help of Barry O’Rourke. The Scoish Area Team Championships took place from the 3rd to the 6th of September at The Kings Club, Inverness, but despite an improved performance in the aternoon rounds, the team of Ruben Lindsay (Turnberry), Jack Broun (Turnberry), Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) Blair Morton (Royal Troon), John Shanks (Irvine) and Steven Wallace (Prestwick St Cuthbert) just failed to qualify for the matchplay stages, in the revised format introduced by Scoish Golf, with only four semi-finalists qualifying instead of the usual eight teams. In the Seniors Area team Championship at Glasgow Gailes in September, the team of Paul Moultrie (72), John Rushbury (72), Alistair Belford (77), J Gordon Boyle (78), Robbie Stewart (80) and Paul Denim (80) recorded a team total of 379 to finish in fourth place behind winners Renfrewshire, and record Ayrshire’s best finish to date in the event. In the West of Scotland league Ayrshire finished in third place behind winners Renfrewshire, opening AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD with a 6.5-1.5 away win against Glasgow at Glasgow Gailes, a 7-1 home win over Sirlingshire at Irvine Ravenspark and a 4-4 away draw with Lanarkshire at Hamilton. The fourth fixture, away to Renfrewshire at Bonnyton, saw the home side produce some outstanding golf to defeat Ayrshire by 5.5-2.5. Ayrshire finished the campaign with a 5-3 home win over Dumbartonshire at Prestwick St Nicholas, to secure third place overall.
Tournaments 1n 2021 Barry O’Rourke, along with Robert Wilson and Ricky Magee, oversaw the various Ayrshire County tournaments, which enjoyed a good level of entries. During the year, nominated Ayrshire Execuive members take on the task of the ongoing administraion of extended compeiions, including the Champion of Champions, Fourball, Handicap League Championship, Scratch Leagues, President’s Puter and Gary Bryden Memorial Salver compeiions, to ensure their smooth and successful conclusion.
