A Message from the President It gives me great pleasure in introducing the 19th ediion of the Ayrshire Golf Associaion Yearbook. It is a true honour to be elected as the Associaion President and I would like to thank all the member clubs and members across Ayrshire for giving me this opportunity. The past year has seen the Covid Pandemic coninue to disrupt and affect all aspects of life, however the one posiive to be taken was that golf, for the most, was allowed to coninue as normal. The way in which our golf clubs have dealt with all the problemaic situaions and restricions they have been faced with is extremely commendable.
Scot Gilchrist
The clubs coninued to adapt to the restricions in a posiive manner throughout 2021. This led to joy for Ayrshire golfers and allowed President John Wat and The Execuive to roll out a full golfing calendar with all scheduled and extended compeiions going ahead. A huge thank you must go to the clubs and the President for making this happen.
The past year saw Ayrshire golf have another successful year for the U18s secion, most notably on the weekend of the 11th-12th September when the team of Max Barclay (Belleisle), Connor Wills (St Nicholas), Jack Allan (Ballochmyle) and Harvey Broadfoot (Troon Welbeck) won the Scoish Boys Area Team Championship at Dullatur GC. This was a real team effort and a true reward for all the work and efforts put in by both the boys and The Execuive over the years. In the West of Scotland league, the U18s were pipped in their bid for a 3rd itle in a row ater topping the league on points but narrowly missing out on the countback for the itle. This consistency shows the amount of fantasic talent coming through within the county. Internaionally, Ayrshire individuals were at the forefront for some very presigious events. Ruben Lindsay (Turnberry) was selected for the GB & I team to play for the Jaques Leglise Trophy. He also represented Scotland in the Home Internaionals, alongside Stuart Easton (Irvine). Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) represented Scotland at Seniors level in the Seniors Home Internaionals and the Seniors European Team Championships. Huge congratulaions must go to Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) on an incredible achievement of winning the Women’s Amateur Championship, winning the Smyth Salver at the Woman’s Scoish Open, and on being selected for the Curis Cup team. Within the county there were some brilliant individual performances with John Shanks (Irvine) and Steven McEwan (Caprington) breaking their respecive course records and young Harvey Broadfoot winning 3 county itles in the Junior Strokeplay, Matchplay and Order of Merit events. The extended compeiions saw a fantasic level of support with a lot of the trophies seeing first ime winners’ names engraved upon them. I would like to congratulate and thank all the winners and paricipaing clubs of 2021. Long may this support coninue. As we head into the 2022 season and with the covid pandemic sill very much part of everyday life I would encourage all the member clubs to coninue in their support of county golf and all members to keep supporing their clubs as much as possible through, what is hopefully the end of these challenging imes. Finally, I would like to give sincere thanks to all the amazing courses, clubs and hardworking Execuive and club commitees who help to facilitate and support our brilliant county. The Ayrshire Golf Associaion will coninue do all we can to support all golfers within Ayrshire. I wish you all a very happy and successful 2022 golfing season, please stay safe.

2021 REvIEW Of THE YEAR Coaching The coaching scheme coninued under the direcion of Scot Gilchrist, to enhance squad development for the Ayrshire County teams, despite the challenges posed by COVID restricions. In 2022 Sandy walker will take over the lead on the coaching scheme. Prestwick golf club coninued to provide excepional support in 2021 for the coaching scheme, allowing use of their faciliies throughout the programme. Club coaching grants, to support individual coaching schemes within member clubs, were curtailed due to COVID consideraions but the scheme will be in place again in 2022. Once again thanks must be recorded for the efforts of our coaching professionals Richard Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) and David Fleming (Prestwick), and Brian Milligan of Fitpit gym in Troon, who enthusiasically coninue to deliver and develop the coaching scheme along with The Associaion each year.
Youth Team Robert Wilson and Sandy Walker managed the youth team again in 2021, and will coninue in their roles in 2022, assisted by new Execuive member Ross Caddis. In the West of Scotland Inter County League, the first match of the season, at home to Glasgow at Largs, resulted in a 5–3 defeat. This was followed by three successive 4 – 4 draws, away to Sirlingshire at Dunblane New, at home to Lanarkshire at Prestwick St. Cuthbert and at home to Renfrewshire at Troon Darley, before the series concluded with a 4.5-3.5 defeat to Dumbartonshire at Douglas Park. Ayrshire finished in fourth place, behind league champions Dumbartonshire. The annual match with the South of Scotland has fallen vicim to COVID restricions for the past two seasons, but it is hoped that the fixture will return in 2022. boys Team Scot Gilchrist led the boy’s team in 2021, assisted by Sandy Walker who will take over the running of the boys’ team in 2022, and it proved to be a memorable season, when the team of Harvey Broadfoot, Jack Allan, Max Barclay and Connor Wills won the Scoish Boys’ Area Team Championship at Dullatur in September to record Ayrshire’s third win in the forty four year history of the event, ater previous successes in 1998 and 2007.
SCOTTISH BOYS AREA TEAM CHAMPIONS
With both foursomes scores in the morning and three of the four aternoon singles scores combining towards the team total, a good score in the morning format by both pairings is vital. The pairings of Connor Wills and Harvey Broadfoot (75) and Jack Allan and Max Barclay (77) saw Ayrshire jointly lead ater the foursomes, along with The North, on 152. In the singles, Harvey (70), Max (71), Jack (78) and Connor (82) established a team total of 371, which gave them the itle by a clear six shots from the runners up from The Lothians.

In the West of Scotland league, Ayrshire’s bid for a third successive itle fell just short when the lost out on the itle in 2021 on ie difference to Dumbartonshire, despite being the only team to complete the five match series undefeated. Ayrshire’s opening fixture was conceded by Glasgow and was followed by a 4-4 draw away to Renfrewshire at Fereneze, a 5-3 win away to Sirlingshire at Grangemouth and a 4-4 draw at holme to Lanarkshire at Caprington. Ayrshire travelled to play Dumbartonshire at Clydebank & District in their final fixture in the knowledge that an emphaic win was required to retain the Wishart Trophy for a third season, but in the event the 4.5-3.5 win was not sufficient to overcome the superior ie difference over the campaign, and Ayrshire finished runners up to Dumbartonshire.
County A Team John Rushbury, assisted by Andrew Gilligan and Steven Wallace administered the A team in 2021 and will coninue in this role in 2022, along with the addiional help of Barry O’Rourke. The Scoish Area Team Championships took place from the 3rd to the 6th of September at The Kings Club, Inverness, but despite an improved performance in the aternoon rounds, the team of Ruben Lindsay (Turnberry), Jack Broun (Turnberry), Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) Blair Morton (Royal Troon), John Shanks (Irvine) and Steven Wallace (Prestwick St Cuthbert) just failed to qualify for the matchplay stages, in the revised format introduced by Scoish Golf, with only four semi-finalists qualifying instead of the usual eight teams. In the Seniors Area team Championship at Glasgow Gailes in September, the team of Paul Moultrie (72), John Rushbury (72), Alistair Belford (77), J Gordon Boyle (78), Robbie Stewart (80) and Paul Denim (80) recorded a team total of 379 to finish in fourth place behind winners Renfrewshire, and record Ayrshire’s best finish to date in the event. In the West of Scotland league Ayrshire finished in third place behind winners Renfrewshire, opening AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD with a 6.5-1.5 away win against Glasgow at Glasgow Gailes, a 7-1 home win over Sirlingshire at Irvine Ravenspark and a 4-4 away draw with Lanarkshire at Hamilton. The fourth fixture, away to Renfrewshire at Bonnyton, saw the home side produce some outstanding golf to defeat Ayrshire by 5.5-2.5. Ayrshire finished the campaign with a 5-3 home win over Dumbartonshire at Prestwick St Nicholas, to secure third place overall.
Tournaments 1n 2021 Barry O’Rourke, along with Robert Wilson and Ricky Magee, oversaw the various Ayrshire County tournaments, which enjoyed a good level of entries. During the year, nominated Ayrshire Execuive members take on the task of the ongoing administraion of extended compeiions, including the Champion of Champions, Fourball, Handicap League Championship, Scratch Leagues, President’s Puter and Gary Bryden Memorial Salver compeiions, to ensure their smooth and successful conclusion.

Course raing Mike Hazlewood, assisted by Ricky Magee and John Rutherford implemented the course raing programme in Ayrshire in 2021 and will coninue to oversee this in 2022. The Ayrshire course raing team is one of the strongest raing teams in the country, who ensure that each course has a raing that accurately reflects the difficulty of the course. The Course raing programme in 2021 was curtailed by COVID restricions, with several scheduled raings being postponed and included in future scheduling. Raings undertaken in 2021 included Prestwick, Troon Portland. Several new course raing volunteers have been recruited, who will assist in the raing programme in 2022.
The Ayrshire Junior Golf League Scot Gilchrist remained as the AJGL representaive on the county Execuive in 2021, with Sandy Walker taking over the role in 2022.
Membership and Administraion The membership of The Associaion remains healthy, with the addiion of the Golf South Ayrshire club bringing the membership to 64 member clubs, represening over 12,000 Ayrshire golfers.
Press and Publicity The Ayrshire Golf Associaion web page has been the main vehicle for publicising the work of The Associaion since its establishment in 2004. Associaion Secretary Alasdair Malcolm has administered the web page since its establishment and will be assisted in publicity maters in 2022 by Scot Gilchrist and Barry O’Rourke. The weblog coninues to prove popular with county players and club members alike, with strong visitor numbers every year, from Scotland and further afield. Fixture lists, compeiion results and entry forms are all made available on the web page, which also features links to member clubs’ own websites and other useful golf links. Local press oten use the web page as a source for press aricles, which are regularly reproduced from the weblog in local papers and on golf related websites. Clubs are encouraged to forward anything of interest to Alasdair Malcolm at ayrshire.golf@binternet.com for possible inclusion on the web page. A Facebook page and Twiter account were also added in 2015. The Ayrshire Golf Associaion Yearbook was produced again in 2021, its eighteenth successive year. Despite the suspension of all compeiions in 2020 it was considered important to keep the yearbook in producion in 2021, and this was well received both within the county and beyond. The Associaion are pleased that Ayrshire Media Services, Troon, have again produced a quality yearbook in 2022, and it is hoped that this publicaion will coninue to prove popular and useful to both members and adverisers alike. Adverising opportuniies in the yearbook are available each year by contacing Ayrshire media Services direct at info@ayrshiremedia.com

In Memorium As we look back over 2021, we remember friends and golfing colleagues who are no longer with us.
Bert Ferguson, a regular in the Ayrshire County team for many years, passed away on Saturday the 25th of September 2021, at the age of 67. A Past Captain and Club Champion of the Troon Welbeck club, and laterly a member of Royal Troon, where he was also Club Champion on two occasions, Bert was an BERT FERGUSON excellent golfer, and also excelled at football, playing professionally for Ayr United, St Mirren, where he was Sir Alex Ferguson’s first signing, and Stranraer. Ater moving to the junior ranks, he also became a Scoish Junior internaionalist. Though he never captured any of the Ayrshire golf itles, Bert regularly featured in the later stages of county compeiions. He was one of those players who was a mainstay of the county team for many seasons, could always be relied on to step up and play for the county team whenever requested, and could always be relied on to give 100% at all imes. A long term resident of Troon, Bert established a successful construcion business, and was well known in Ayrshire golfing circles, and beyond, as a fine golfer who was great company both on and off the course. The golfing community in Ayrshire and far beyond were stunned and shocked by the unimely death, on Wednesday the 8th of December 2021, of Pure Forged Golf owner and Master Clubmaker Jamie McCormack, at the all too early age of 51. Jamie was brought up in Ayr, where he atended Mainholm Academy. He began his golfing development at Ayr Dalmilling and became an accomplished golfer, taking part in county events on a regular basis, reaching the semi-finals of the 2004 Ayrshire Champion of Champions trophy compeiion, losing out to the eventual winner Tommy McInally. Since establishing Pure Forged Golf around 2003, Jamie and his wife Lynne worked hard to establish the company as the first choice company for premium, custom JAMIE McCORMACK made, golf clubs in the country. Jamie became a member of Irvine Golf Club and was a regular supporter of compeiions and events at his home club and beyond, and in recent years took much pride in following the developing golfing skills of his young son, also Jamie, as a member of the successful Irvine Golf Club junior secion, oten seen on the course supporing the juniors at team matches and always willing to chat about anything golf related, to friends and strangers alike. Described simply by many friends and acquaintances as simply ‘a great guy,’ Jamie’s skills as a clubmaker, and more importantly his friendship and easy going, affable, demeanour, will be sadly missed by many from the golfing world and elsewhere.

In Memorium (contd) The Ayrshire golfing community was dealt another sad blow on Monday the 20th of December 2021, with the passing of Ayr Dalmilling Golf Club's Secretary Robert D. Green, at the age of 84. Robert was well known on county golfing circles, a much respected club official who had served his home club in various capaciies over a considerable number of years, most notably as Club Secretary in recent imes. A skilled organiser, Robert was well liked in his home club and far beyond, being described by many as one of life's true gentlemen, a club legend and simply Mr. Ayr Dalmilling. A firm supporter of all aspects of the club, of which he was one of the founder ROBERT D. GREEN members in 1961, he enjoyed the success of young club golfers and club teams alike, over the years. He took considerable pride in seeing his club team win the inaugural Ayrshire handicap League Championship in 2017 and was present both on the day and at the following Ayrshire Golf Associaion annual dinner, where he was a regular atender over many years, to see the team receive the championship trophy. Although he had some health issues in recent imes, Robert's dedicaion to looking ater the interests of the membership of the Dalmilling club never wavered, and he coninued to look ater all the club maters unil his sad passing. A shining example of the brand of unsung hero that every golf club needs to flourish.

OTHER NOTAbLE PERfORMANCES DuRING THE YEAR Ayrshire players had several notable performances at a naional level during 2021, with the county also being well represented in various internaional squads during the year. Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) produces a stunning result at Kilmarnock Barassie in June when she became the first Ayrshire golfer to win the Woman’s Amateur Championship since legendary Troon golfer Helen Holm did so in 1934 and 1938. The 21 year old Sirling University student defeated fellow Scot Hannah Darling in the semi-final and played Denmark’s Jóhanna Lea Lúðvíksdóir in the 36 hole final, which she won by 9&8, the largest winning margin in the final in the history of the tournament.

The victory ensured invites to compete in the US Woman’s Open, The Evian Championship, the Augusta Woman’s Amateur Championship and the Briish Woman’s Open at Carnousie, where she went on to finish in the top ten and won the Smyth salver for the leading amateur. During 2021 Louise was selected to represent Scotland at the European Woman’s Team Championship at Royal County Down in Ireland in July and the Home internaionals at Woodhall Spa in August, and her season culminated in selecion for the Great Britain & Ireland team for the Curis Cup match against the USA at Conwyn, in Wales, in August.
