A Message from the President

Season 2024 was an extremely successful year for Ayrshire Golf. We started off the year with the 5year sponsorship announcement with Lomond Property, allowing us to continue to invest into the next generation of Ayrshire County golfers.

In 2024, there was the small matter of The Open at Royal Troon, testing the world’s greatest players in somewhat typical conditions for summer golf, and not to be outdone, The Women’s Scottish Open, saw a topclass field assembled at Dundonald too.

At county level, Ayrshire would win two out of the three West of Scotland League titles this year, and on top of that The Ayrshire Senior Men’s team returned home with The Scottish Area team title adding even more silverware to the Ayrshire trophy cabinet.

On a national front, Ayrshire can continue to hold its head up high, with numerous Ayrshire players proudly representing their Country through the various levels of national golf, Ayrshire names topping both the Girls and Men’s Senior Order of Merit.

Club bragging rights were settled on Finals Day in September, when the climax of the Inter Club knockout competitions took place at Ballochmyle, the day saw several firsttime winners taking home county titles back to their respective clubs.

The Women’s game in Ayrshire continues to go from strength to strength with more knockout competition introduced this year and with plans for the introduction of further competitions for next year, this can only be good for the Women’s game.

The inaugural Ayrshire Golf Association Charity Golf Day was held at Rowallan Castle in September, and alongside the collection bucket

donations from all the event throughout the year saw a wonderful amount of over £6k going to Ayrshire Cancer Support this year.

Lastly, we could not have this success without the commitment from our member clubs who have hosted the various competitions and team matches throughout the year, for this we are extremely grateful.

All that is left for me, is to wish each and every one of you a wonderful season of golf in 2025.

Yours in golf

Coaching

2024 REVIEW OF THE YEAR

Andy Reid & Paul Kennedy continued to lead on the coaching scheme in 2024 and will continue in their role in 2025.

Prestwick golf club continued to provide exceptional support in 2024 for the coaching scheme, allowing use of their facilities throughout the programme.

Club coaching grants, to support individual coaching schemes within member clubs, were again available to develop ‘in house’ coaching schemes for member clubs and will be in place again in 2025, with an increased grant level available.

Richard Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) and David Fleming (Prestwick) again worked closely with The Association to deliver the squad coaching scheme, with the enhanced coaching being augmented with the fitness input from Brian Milligan again and the valued contribution from Ayrshire team member Paul Moultrie through his Mind Body Golf initiative.

The development squad coaching introduced in 2024 was a success and very early on produced real prospects for the next generation of Ayrshire team players and this expansion of the coaching scheme will be continued in 2025, with local professionals Lee Hughes and Allan Todd again engaged to deliver the development squad scheme.

Youth Team

Robert Wilson and William Fleming managed the youth team in 2024, and both will continue in this role in 2025.

The highlight of the Youth team’s season again came in the West of Scotland Inter County

League, where Ayrshire retained the title and trophy for a second successive victory. The first two matches resulted in 53 wins away to Renfrewshire at Fereneze and at home to Dumbartonshire at Loudoun, before the team secured a 44 draw away to Glasgow at Cowglen. A 62 home win over Stirlingshire at Troon Portland in the penultimate match of the campaign set up a winner take all final match away to eventual runners up Lanarkshire at East Kilbride, where the Ayrshire team made no mistake, recording a 5.52.5 win to retain the title.

Ayrshire travelled to Wigtownshire County GC in April to defend the President’s Trophy in the annual match with the South of Scotland, and the combined youths and boys team retained the trophy, overwhelming their opponents by 5.5 –0.5 in the morning foursomes and winning the afternoon singles 93 for an overall match winning score of 14.5 – 3.5.

Boys Team

Andy Reid & Paul Kennedy led the boy’s team to west of Scotland success in 2024 and will continue to lead the Boy’s team in 2025.

West of Scotland Youth League winners Ayrshire

In the Scottish Boys’ Area Team Championship at Duff House Royal, the Ayrshire team of Scott Newman, Harris Fleming, Quintin Dunlop & Jack Broadfoot finished in joint seventh place behind the winners from Lothians, fighting back from an indifferent performance in the morning foursomes to enhance their final placing with improved scoring in the afternoon singles.

Success came in the West of Scotland Under 18 League where Ayrshire won the Wishart Trophy for the first time since 2019 with four wins from four in their league fixtures. An opening 4.53.5

win over Lanarkshire at Kirkhill was followed by an 80 home win over Dumbartonshire at Ayr Belleisle. Ayrshire’s third match was a 44 draw with Glasgow at Ralston but in the event, Glasgow defaulted on two of their five fixtures, leading to all their match results being voided from the league table in 2024.

Ayrshire subsequently stormed to the title win with 71 wins in their remaining two matches at home to Renfrewshire and Stirlingshire respectively, which were played at Ayr Belleisle and Irvine.

County A Team

Barry O’Rourke, Scott Gilchrist, and John Shanks administered the A team in 2024.

In the Scottish Men’s Area Team Championship, Ayrshire failed to progress to the finals weekend from the qualifying section. An opening 81 away win at Rothesay against Argyll & Bute was followed by a 4.5 – 4.5 home draw with Glasgow at Loudoun, but despite Ayrshire recording a 6.5 – 2.5 home win over Clackmannanshire in their final fixture at Loudoun, it was Glasgow that went through to the finals weekend by virtue of having two away fixtures in the qualifying section, after Ayrshire and Glasgow both finished with two wins and a draw.

In the four singles and two foursomes format used in the 2024 West of Scotland League Ayrshire finished in third place behind champions Stirlingshire, with their 100% home record being offset by two away defeats. An opening 3.5 – 2.5 win over Renfrewshire at Prestwick St Cuthbert was followed by a 4.51.4 defeat away to Dumbartonshire at Clydebank & District. A 4.51.5 home win over Glasgow at West Kilbride in match three was followed by a 4.51.5 defeat away to Stirlingshire at Falkirk before the team signed off the season with a 42 home win over Lanarkshire at Ayr Seafield.

Senior Men’s Team

The Ayrshire senior men’s team enjoyed national success in 2024 when they won the Scottish Senior Men’s Area Team Championship at Monifieth Links on the 17th of October to bring the trophy to Ayrshire for the first time since the championship was inaugurated in 2008.

With the best five round from six counting, the team of Robert Jenkins, Paul Moultrie, George Robertson, Alistair Belford, Andrew Marshall, and Brian Fisher recorded a team total of 364 to take the title by a single shot from Stirlingshire and Lothians.

Scottish Senior Men’s Area Team Champions

Tournaments

1n 2024 Barry O’Rourke, along with Jimmy McGhee and William Fleming, oversaw the various Ayrshire County tournaments, which enjoyed a good level of entries.

During the year, individual Ayrshire Executive members take on the ongoing administration of extended competitions, including the Men’s and Women’s Champion of Champions, Fourball, Ayrshire Jug, Men’s and Women’s Handicap League Championships, Scratch Leagues, President’s Putter and Gary Bryden Memorial Salver competitions, to ensure their smooth and successful conclusion.

The portfolio of events was enhanced in 2024 with the introduction of a Women’s Matchplay

Championship, and Girl’s Strokeplay Championship, along with additional trophies for the handicap winners in both the Boy’s and Girl’s Strokeplay Championships.

2025 will see the events being further enhanced with a new Ayrshire Senior Women’s Championship to be played on the same day as the established Men’s event.

Membership and Administration

The membership of The Association remains healthy with 63 member clubs, representing over 13,000 Ayrshire golfers. Unfortunately, in 2024, The Association lost a member club with the demise of the Carrick Speakers Golf Club, but in 2025 the membership of The Association will increase to 66 clubs with the welcome addition of Ayr Dalmilling Ladies, Ayr Seafield Ladies and Troon Bentinck Ladies clubs to the membership of The Association.

The 2024 AGM saw the successful reelection to The Executive of Robert Wilson, Debbie Watt, Liz Keohone, and Jimmy McGhee, while Steven Stamper and Brian Fisher were elected to The Executive for the first time.

Sponsorship

The Association continues to enjoy sponsorship of championship scorecards by local office supplies, business solutions, and workwear providers Active Office, and in 2024 saw the beginning of a major fiveyear sponsorship deal with local estate agents and property management company Lomond Property, which has allow the further development and enhancement of the activities of the Ayrshire Golf Association. Thanks are extended to the sponsors for their valued support.

In 2024 the Association began their twoyear association with Ayrshire Cancer Support as the preferred charity, with collections being taken at all The Association’s events.

In support of the preferred charity The Association held a charity golf day at Rowallan Castle GC on the 13th of September and with the support of many generous clubs, business, and individuals over £4,000 was raised on the day for the charity.

Executive member Liz Keohone, an ambassador for the charity, was instrumental in collecting the prizes and ensuring the success of the first charity golf day.

A charity event will be held again in 2025, on Friday the 12th of September at Troon Lochgreen, with proceeds again being donated to Ayrshire Cancer Support.

At the conclusion of the 2024 season President Andrew Gilligan presented a cheque for £6,303.69 raised during the year by The Association for the charity.

Press and Publicity

The Ayrshire Golf Association web page was established in 2004 and continues to be an important vehicle for championship and other Association news. Association Secretary Alasdair Malcolm has administered the web page since its establishment and will again be assisted in publicity matters in 2024 by Scott Gilchrist and Barry O’Rourke.

Fixture lists, competition results and entry forms are all made available on the web page, which also features links to member clubs’ own websites and other useful golf links.

The web page is also used by local press as a source for articles, which are regularly reproduced in local papers and on golf related websites, enhancing wider publicity.

Clubs are encouraged to

forward anything of interest to Alasdair Malcolm at ayrshire.golf@btinternet.com for possible inclusion on the web page.

A Facebook page and Twitter were added in 2015 and further enhance publicity.

The Association is in the process of moving the competition administration to the Scottish Golf VMS platform in 2025, which will include the development of a supplementary web page to enhance the social media presence of The Association.

The Ayrshire Golf Association Yearbook was produced again in 2024, its twenty first successive year. The Association are pleased that Ayrshire Media Services, Troon, have again produced a quality yearbook in 2025, in its 22nd year.

Advertising opportunities in the yearbook are available each year by contacting Ayrshire media Services direct at info@ayrshiremedia.com

In Memorium

As we look back over 2024, we remember friends and golfing colleagues who are no longer with us.

Members of many clubs throughout Ayrshire were saddened to learn the news that long time Prestwick St Nicholas member Jimmy Leonard passed away on Tuesday the 27th of August 2024 at the age of 93.

Jimmy was well known throughout the golfing community in the county, having served as junior convenor of Prestwick St Nicholas for several years, and having supported golf at all levels in the area for a very long period, making many friends in the process with his amiable and friendly disposition.

Jimmy was born in and lived all his life in the same house in Ayr, just a stone throw from his beloved

Prestwick St Nicholas links, a club of which he was a member for over 70 years and where he spent many happy days either playing the game or simply mixing and socialising with fellow

members, visitors and other acquaintances gathered through friendships formed during his many years of involvement in the game.

AYRSHIRE MEN’S STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Gavin Chesney (Kilbirnie Place) won the 2024 Ayrshire Men's Strokeplay Championship, sponsored by Lomond Property, at Largs Golf Club on Sunday the 28th of April, taking his first Ayrshire title after a threehole playoff with Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle).

In excellent weather on a course in fine order, 77 players contested the 2024 championship, and after two rounds Gavin Chesney and Craig Hamilton were ties with a tworound total of one shot clear of Adam Sweeney and David A MacDonald.

After all the players completed the two rounds, the destination of the title was decided by a threehole strokeplay play off, over holes 1, 2 and 18.

At the opening hole, Gavin Chesney holed from eight feet for a birdie to put him ahead in the play off when Craig Hamilton opened with a par three, and despite both players having chances over the remaining two playoff holes, both players ultimately had pars at both holes which gave Gavin Chesney the title for the first time.

Although not in the prizes, the championship proved to be a memorable one for Lawrence Ngoma (Loudoun) who had a hole in one in his morning round at the 162yard eighth hole.

AYRSHIRE MEN’S MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Harvey Broadfoot (Royal Troon) won his first Ayrshire Men’s Matchplay title on Thursday the 9th of May in a classic final at Rowallan Castle GC against Cameron Aitken (Largs), with the destination of the title not decided until the final regulation hole of the match.

Harvey opened with a birdie three and extended his lead with a birdie four at the third hole before Cameron hit back with successive birdies at the fourth and fifth to square the match.

Harvey then took three successive holes from the sixth to establish a threehole advantage by the turn but again Cameron clawed his way back to reduce the deficit to one after fourteen holes.

An excellent birdie four at the sixteenth gave Harvey a two hole lead with two to play but a par three after a great recovery shot from a bunker at the penultimate hole by Cameron secured him the hole to take the match to the final hole, but it was Harvey who closed out the match with a birdie four at the last to take the title.
