Unresolved Respiratory Symptoms? Get the Right Tests and Care
Each year, 500 to 1,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a rare lung disease that can be fatal if left untreated.
To encourage earlier diagnosis of PAH, the American Lung Association, with support from Johnson & Johnson, is sharing information about the disease, its symptoms, and the importance of testing and proper treatment. Here’s what the Lung Association wants you to know:
What is PAH? PAH is a rare, progressive lung disease caused when the tiny arteries in your lungs become thickened and narrowed. This blocks blood flow through your lungs, causing the blood pressure in your lungs to rise. The heart has to work harder to pump blood through the narrowed arteries. Over time, your heart has difficulty effectively pumping blood through your body.
What are the symptoms of PAH? In the early stages, you may not notice symptoms. As PAH progresses, common symptoms include shortness of breath, especially with activities like walking up the stairs or long distances, fatigue, edema (swelling of the feet, legs and eventually the abdomen and neck), dizziness and fainting spells, chest pain, heart palpitations, and lips and fingers turning blue. Contact
your healthcare provider if you’re experiencing these or any worrisome symptoms.
Who is most at risk? While anyone can get PAH, those most at risk are women ages 30-60, and Black and Hispanic women.
Why is PAH difficult to diagnose? Because symptoms of PAH are similar to other diseases, the average time it takes to get a diagnosis is about 3 years. This delay can be frustrating for patients and their families, and can result in poorer health outcomes. Unfortunately, health disparities exist due to a wide-range of factors, like lack of access to healthcare, health insurance coverage, transportation to specialists, and health literacy, and can exacerbate these delays. Increasing awareness of this rare disease can help patients get a quicker diagnosis so they can get the treatment they need.
Elva V., a mom and nurse, has been living with PAH since she was 23. She shares that getting the correct diagnosis and treatment plan has been a “game changer,” helping her “feel well enough to do the things I enjoy and live a good life with my daughters.”
How can the path to diagnosis be shortened? Your provider may order several tests to help with diagnosis:
• A simple blood test, the BNP test (also called B-type natriuretic peptide test) or NT-proBNP test, can help determine if your heart is working harder than it should, a sign that you may have PAH. Getting this test done early can help speed the path to diagnosis.
• Electrocardiogram to show the electrical activity of your heart.
• Echocardiogram to check the size and condition of your heart.
• Lung function tests.
• A right heart catheterization to confirm PAH, once your provider suspects it.
How is PAH treated? PAH-specific medications come in multiple forms: oral, inhaled and subcutaneous. Some allow blood to flow more easily through the arteries of your lungs. Others improve heart and lung function. PAH medications help slow how quickly your disease worsens. For optimal health outcomes when dealing with a rare disease like PAH, it’s best to see a specialist.
“When seen by a specialist, you’ll receive the latest treatment and resources to help you live your best life,” says Dr. Michael Cuttica, a pulmonary hypertension specialist.
That is certainly the case for Lindsay T., who has been living with PAH since her early twenties and works with her doctor to manage her care. “My BNP has been within a normal range since I alerted my specialist that my symptoms were getting worse and he adjusted my medications,” she says.
If you have unresolved respiratory symptoms that are not improving with your current treatment, learn more about PAH at Lung.org/pah. A PAH diagnosis doesn’t have to be delayed. With the right tests and care from a specialist, you can get on the path to the treatment you need. (StatePoint)
Small Business Owners Remain Confident Despite Trade Challenges
Optimism for the future of the U.S. economy and business prospects is at an all-time high, according to a new survey of small and mid-size business owners.
Just one year ago in PNC’s Economic Outlook survey, a record 56% of respondents – which include business owners or financial decision makers at more than 500 small to mid-size businesses nationwide – reported optimism for the future of the U.S. economy.
That number jumped to 58% in the latest survey, with optimism
for business prospects climbing to 84%.
In contrast, is a declining number of respondents who say they expect demand or profits to increase in the next six months.
Additionally, 46% of business owners say they are “extremely concerned” about inflation in the coming months, with one-third also reporting they are “extremely concerned” about the risk from higher tariffs and supplier prices. (Continued On Page 10)
Fall Yard Cleanup Tips From Lawn Care Experts
Fall means school is back in session, football season’s beginning, and your lawn is going to need some extra care to stay healthy through winter. “With the change in seasons, your lawn care routine is also going to change to include less mowing and more dealing with leaves and debris,” says Nick Heiser, product manager at Exmark. “And if you’ve got a lot of debris and material to get up and off your lawn, you’re going to want to do that by bagging when you mow.”
In “Lawn Mowing Tips for Fall Yard Cleanup,” a video on Exmark’s Backyard Life site, Heiser explains that doing so might require switching out the type of blade you have on your mower. While most mowers come standard with high-lift notch blades, which are good for many cutting conditions, for heavy bagging, you should be using an extreme blade. This will do a few things for you:
• It will create an aggressive lift that creates the vacuum and suction needed to pull up debris.
• It will evenly cut up, break down and compact everything on your lawn to help the bagging system do its job more effectively. Once you’ve cleared most of the debris, you should switch back to mulching for the last few cuts of the season to put nutrients back into the ground and allow the lawn to retain moisture. A micro mulch system, which is an easy-to-use and easy-toinstall lawn mower accessory, provides an extra set of blades to break down clippings to a fine mulch, then directs the area of deposit, so you control where the mulch lands. Finally, fall is the best time for aeration for cool-season grasses. Aeration is essential to ensuring that the roots of your lawn get plenty of air and the nutrients they need before winter.
To view the video, visit Exmark’s Backyard Life, a unique multimedia destination focused on helping homeowners improve their outdoor living spaces. There you can also download additional tips and view other Exmark Original Series videos. Now that you’re armed with these fall yard cleanup tips, you can head out to take care of your lawn with confidence. Steps To Create A Budget That Empowers You
According to personal finance experts, it may be time to rewrite your relationship with budgeting, particularly if your associations with the task are negative. “Budgeting isn’t about having less—it’s about making more of what you have,” says David Chubak, principal, head of Wealth Management & Field Engagement at Edward Jones. “When executed effectively, it’s the roadmap that turns financial chaos into clarity.” To help you align your finances with your goals and values, Edward Jones is sharing these budgeting steps:
Track income and expenses: Discover what’s being earned and what’s being spent. To get a clear picture, consider delving into detailed spending categories, such as housing, groceries, childcare, entertainment, savings and debt. Be sure to factor in annual and semiannual expenses like insurance premiums. Whether you use a spreadsheet, a list or an app, re-
member that the most important thing is consistency, so find a tool that will make you stick with the habit.
Use the 50/30/20 rule as a guide: Not sure how to appropriate your money? Many financial advisors suggest the 50/30/20 rule as a guide. This means using 50% of your income for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and debt repayment.
Set your initial target budget: You
may learn that your current spending exceeds your income, or that it’s not allowing you to achieve your financial goals. If this is the case, look for budget items that could be cut or swapped for less expensive alternatives. To make additional room in your budget, you could also generate more income by pursuing a side hustle, seeking out a higher paying position or asking for a raise. If you’re still not balancing your budget after these measures, it might be time to reprioritize your goals.
Build an emergency fund: Even a solid budget can be derailed by unexpected circumstances. Be sure that your budget includes a line item for building an emergency fund to prepare you for everything from job loss and housing repairs to medical expenses. After you’ve amassed what you’d need to weather three to six months of a financial emergency, leave this rainy-day fund untouched and concentrate on other budget items, such as paying down debt or investing.
Monitor your budget: Schedule periodic check-ins to ensure you’re staying on track and that your initial budget was accurate. For example, if you missed an annual subscription fee or miscalculated an expense, now’s the time to make adjustments.
Review your budget: Every three to five years, review your budget to see if it still makes sense or whether a redo is necessary. You should
also do a budgetary pause and reset after major life changes, such as marriage, divorce, birth or the loss of a loved one, or when there are big changes to your income and expenses. For example, you should complete a budget overhaul after events like a home purchase or big promotion.
For more budgeting tips, or to connect with a financial advisor who can work with you to review your finances and create a budgeting strategy that allows you to reach your goals, visit edwardjones.com.
“Budgeting can be hard work, so make it enjoyable. Whether you’re tackling the numbers solo or with a partner, pair budgeting with something you enjoy, like a nice meal at home or your favorite treat. And be sure your attention is focused not only on budget cuts, but also on what goals and priorities you’re working toward,” says Chubak. (StatePoint)

3 Steps To Cultivate A Healthy Home
Your home should be a safe haven. Unfortunately, environmental factors can compromise the quality of air you breathe and the water you drink in your house. Follow these steps to cultivate healthier spaces and greater peace of mind:
Powerful Cleaning Solutions
Poor indoor air quality can contribute to respiratory problems, headaches, itchy eyes and more. So if you’re tired of traditional cleaning methods that kick up the very dust and debris you’re working to eliminate, it’s time to level up your cleaning tools.
The new PURE ONE S Series from Tineco features two vacuums that deliver powerful performance. The Tineco S70, ideal for use across multiple surfaces, has a six-stage filtration system that removes 99.99% of micro dust.
To swiftly capture dust, debris and pet hair without clogging, the model relies on 200 air watts of powerful suction and an Upgraded 3DSense Pro Cleaning System, which includes four main components:
DustSense: Precise suction, thanks to realtime dust detection and automatic power adjustment based on dust volume.
LightSense: A 150-degree wide-angle headlight that illuminates a large area, clearly revealing dust particles as small as 0.02mm.
EdgeSense: Edge-to-edge cleaning with an automatic suction boost near walls.
ClogLess System: An upgraded brush, plus a large suction inlet area for clog-free large debris cleaning.
Its many features, including its lengthy runtime, a 180-degree foldable vacuum tube, multiple attachments, and compact charging stand, are designed with convenience in mind, as is the hands-free dustbin offering quick, hygienic disposal for a wellness-focused cleaning experience.
An additional model in the series, which
helps reveal and remove hidden dust from the home, is the S50 Pro. These vacuums are available on Amazon and the Tineco online store.
Fresh, Filtered Water
Both tap and bottled water commonly contain contaminants that can be harmful to human health.
For better tasting water that’s healthier for you and your family, use one of today’s topquality water filters designed to remove everything from heavy metals and bacteria to microplastics and pesticides.
With home models as versatile as pitchers you can refrigerate, dispensers you can rest on your countertop, and attachments that fit in your sink basin, you’re certain to find a filter that works for your family’s needs and preferences. For best results, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding filter replacement.
Humidity Regulation
Keeping your home at healthy humidity levels (30-60%) is essential for good health. During upsurges of humidity, a dehumidifier run in moist areas like the basement, bathroom and kitchen will reduce the potential for mildew and mold.
Both can cause allergic reactions, with mold being particularly dangerous, in some cases posing a threat to liver and neurological health. When humidity levels plummet, use a humidifier to counteract dryness.
This will help skin retain moisture so that it’s less prone to chapping and cracking and give sinuses and nasal passages a healthy boost so they can fight infections.
For ultimate control and convenience, choose smart models that can be operated remotely, and that will adjust settings as needed.
Many systems also send notifications when it’s time for you to take action, such as filling or emptying the water tank or cleaning the filter.
While you can’t control environmental factors like pollution and allergens, you can take steps to create a healthy home. Fortunately, technology is making it possible to easily and conveniently tackle these challenges. (StatePoint)
5 Financial Moves To Make Right Now
Smart money decisions can give you a head start on the future you want!
Whether you’re newly graduated or well into your career, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals say you should make these five financial moves right now:
Create a budget. Research finds that 83% of Gen Z-ers and millennials have experienced regret about their spending decisions. Crafting a budget means making mindful choices about how you spend your money, which can eliminate financial stress.
However, if the term “budget” fills you with dread, try calling it a “spending plan” instead. The important thing is to get started and find a process that works for you.
Build an emergency fund. According to the Federal Reserve Board, only 55% of Americans had three months’ worth of expenses in emergency savings in 2024.
In the event of an unexpected expense, such
as hospitalization or home repairs, a rainyday fund can save you from accumulating debt or dipping into retirement savings.
A CFP® professional can help you adjust your budget to divert savings into an emergency fund to cover at least three to six months’ worth of fixed expenses.
Start saving for retirement now. It’s never
too early to begin saving for a comfortable retirement. If your employer offers a retirement savings plan, sign up for it now and put as much in as you can, especially if your company offers matching contributions.
You don’t need an employer-sponsored plan to save for your golden years, though. Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs are also good vehicles for retirement savings.
Take a big-picture approach. From paying down debt and growing your investments to managing taxes and insurance, reviewing your overall financial picture can help you reach your personal goals.
That’s where the help of a financial advisor who has your best interests in mind comes into play. A CFP® professional can serve as a financial coach, integrating the many components of your financial plan and providing valuable advice at any stage of your life. Don’t make a move. It may sound counterintuitive, but once you’ve charted a financial path, sometimes you should simply leave it alone.
According to financial experts, historically speaking, world events and the volatility of the market are not reasons to rethink your investment strategy or rewrite your game plan. However, tweaking your plan to accommodate changing personal circumstances is important.
To hire a CFP® professional, visit www. LetsMakeAPlan.org.
These five financial moves will create the foundation for a strong financial future. A financial planner can help you start strong and reach your money goals. (StatePoint)
Life Insurance Options To Fit Today’s Funeral Practices
Tradition is meeting innovation in today’s memorial practices, proving that even life’s final chapter can be reimagined.
Today’s funerals bear little resemblance to those of the past. According to the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), cremation surpassed traditional burials as the preferred method of laying the deceased to rest in 2015.
That trend continues today, with the estimated cremation rate in the United States in 2024 at 61.9%, and the burial rate estimated at 33.2%.
The tone of funerals has also changed, with many opting to host a celebration of life characterized with bright colors, upbeat music and even laughter as loved ones remember treasured moments together.
A newer, somewhat surprising trend is not waiting for a loved one to die before officially celebrating their life. Known as living funerals, these highly customized ceremonies are actually overseen and attended by the to-be deceased.
Technology is taking a more dominant role in memorials. Streaming services, virtual memorials and online tributes make it possible to pay one’s respects without traveling. Digital tools make planning the funeral or
celebration faster and more convenient.
Perhaps one of the most significant changes is an environmental focus. Biodegradable polymer urns are available that release nutrients into the Earth.
Tree pod burials involve wrapping the individual in an organic fiber buried where a tree will be planted. While such green options are increasingly popular, they are not yet available everywhere and must follow stringent requirements.
Water cremation, also known as alkalinehydrolysis or aquamation, is becoming more common because of its low-carbon footprint. Although it is far from a frequent form of disposition, it is gaining popularity and legal acceptance. Among other environmental benefits, it offers 90% energy savings over
fire cremation.
Of course, cost is often a key consideration. Unless the deceased’s family is wealthy, they will likely rely on the proceeds of existing life insurance policies to cover costs.
According to the NFDA, the median cost of a funeral with viewing and traditional burial in 2024 was $8,300. Cremation is less expensive, which helps to explain its growing popularity. But there are other expenses to consider. These include cemetery plots, headstones, flowers, musicians, transportation and obituaries.
The face value of life insurance policies varies greatly depending on a family’s financial situation. At minimum, financial advisors will typically recommend that a life insurance policy be purchased with a death benefit to pay for final expenses.
These smaller policies, which average $5,000-$25,000, are designed solely to cover necessary costs without financially burdening family. Smaller whole life policies can accomplish the same goals. Neither, however, do much to help survivors sustain a standard of living following a death.
Determining exactly how much life insurance you and your loved ones need and the best form of coverage can be challenging, especially considering there are more options today than ever.
But, with the help of an experienced life insurance agent, the process is not overwhelming. Erie Insurance agents, for example, work closely with clients to fully understand their financial needs today and in the future and match them with the right policy (term, whole, universal, etc.).
“Our agents serve as advocates, helping streamline the application process, advise on policy options, conduct reviews and manage necessary changes to policies over the years. They also assist with claims and act as liaisons with the insurance company,” said Mike Fletcher, SVP, sales and marketing, of Erie Insurance.
To help give you a head start on planning, visit erieinsurance.com/life-insurance/calculator. This fast, private, no-obligation planning tool will help determine how much life insurance you need based on your age, family situation, burial plans and financial status.
While funeral practices are in flux, one thing remains the same, a life insurance policy can help loved ones meet expenses. (StatePoint)
3 Ways To Become Indispensable To Your Workplace
In today’s employment landscape, which is characterized by technological disruption, protecting your career against restructuring efforts and downsizing is essential. Here are three ways to become indispensable to your company:
Be a Leader
Doing the bare minimum is a fast track for fading into the woodwork. Instead, become someone that your colleagues, supervisors and supervisees trust, respect, and look to for insight.
Make a point of having a broad understanding of your department and company’s overarching goals and priorities so that when you speak up in meetings, you’re doing so from an informed, holistic standpoint. Identify processes that
need fine-tuning and share ideas for implementing them. Showcase your ability to lead by volunteering to oversee high-visibility projects and by becoming a mentor to interns and new staffers.
Get the Right Certification
In many industries, acquiring the right certification can impact your income, advance your career and help make you a vital member of your company.
Take financial advising, for instance. CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification has been considered the standard for 50 years. In fact, 79% of CFP® professionals say they have a competitive edge over other financial
Highly valued by consumers — 90% say they feel more confident working with an advisor with a financial planning designation — CFP® professionals are employed by more than 10,000 firms across the United States, and research shows they get better results for their clients.
Prestigious designations like CFP® certification have rigorous standards, demonstrating to potential employers and clients alike your talents, ethical standards and capabilities.
And because maintaining certification requires continuing education, your employer will know that you are staying on top of developments in your field, so you can remain po-
Multi-generational living is becoming increasingly common. However, as families grow and change, so must their homes.
Danielle DeBoe Harper, senior creative style manager at Moen, a leader in water experiences in the home, shares three ways to develop aesthetically pleasing spaces that cater to everyone’s needs.
Create a Connected Kitchen
The kitchen is a place where everyone seems to gather. When planning your space, focus on a layout
that fosters interaction. A large island can become a center for conversation, homework and meal prep, while a spacious dining area easily accommodates the whole family. Incorporate booster seats or highchairs for young children and consider seat cushions or chairs with armrests to ensure comfort and ease for older family members.
“Prioritize an environment where daily tasks become effortless for everyone,” says DeBoe Harper. “Products like pot fillers above the stove eliminate the strain of carrying heavy pots of water for young-
er family members or those with mobility challenges, and touchless faucets help reduce the spread of germs – important in a large household, especially one with children. Plus, hands-free fixtures don’t require turning or twisting a knob to activate, simplifying the task for kids as well as household members with limited dexterity or arthritis.”
Transform Bathrooms
A well-designed bathroom should function for all family members. Grab bars in the shower and near the toilet add accessibility and an extra layer of safety for older relatives, pregnant women or those with mobility challenges.
The good news is that you can choose decorative fixtures that blend effortlessly with different design styles, from traditional to transitional and even contempo-
sitioned as a stand-out team member. To learn more, visit CFP.net.
Be Willing to Pivot
Organizational strategies and priorities can change over time.
Understanding these shifts and being flexible is essential to staying relevant at your company. This may require learning new skills and software, obtaining new certifications or even going back to school. The important thing is being willing to pivot if needed.
With the right attitude, and a willingness to invest time and energy to develop your professional skills, you can advance your position in your company and secure your place as an essential member of the team. (StatePoint) advisors.
How To Upgrade Your Home For Multi-Generational Living
rary industrial.
“Even the smallest changes make a difference,” says DeBoe Harper. “Beyond grab bars, a small bench or seating area benefits those with mobility limitations and provides a spot for kids to sit while parents get ready.
Dual vanities and mirrors mean less fighting over the bathroom in the mornings! And furniture with spacious drawers or recessed shelving help keep the space organized.”
When selecting shower fixtures, consider installing a multi-spray showerhead for a customizable showering experience. The Moen Verso Combination Shower with Infiniti Dial is ideal for multi-generational homes as it’s easy for all dexterity levels to operate. It combines a pivoting rainshower with a handshower, perfect for rinsing hair when bathing small children, or helping those with limited flexibility shower more easily or while seated. The Infiniti Dial provides personalized spray and coverage choices, too.
Design a Dynamic Living Room
Flexibility is key for everyday
living, so invest in furniture that adapts to different needs. Think extendable dining tables for large family meals, or modular sofas and ottomans that easily maneuver to create more play space or to seat extra guests during a party.
Many ottomans even offer built-in storage, perfect for tucking away toys and books. You also can utilize an extra table or credenza as a craft station or homework spot, with ample room to store supplies.
“The living room is like an art canvas, and each family member can contribute something meaningful to bring this space to life,” says DeBoe Harper. “Dedicate a wall area to hang children’s artwork or family photos. It’s also a great spot to weave in family heirlooms or items that hold sentimental value, so you can infuse the room with warmth and family history.”
Visit Moen.com for more multigenerational design tips in the home.
By focusing on functionality, comfort and thoughtful design in key areas, you can develop a setting that seamlessly embraces loved ones of all ages for years to come.

3 Things Every Older Adult Should Do For Their Health This Fall
For older adults, fall is an important time to focus on health and wellness.
According to Ryan Kocher, who leads Medicare growth for HealthSpring, the new brand for Health Care Service Corporation’s Medicare business, formerly owned by the Cigna Group, the following three tasks are essential for seniors to complete as cool weather sets in.
Get a Flu Shot
An influenza vaccine can help prevent serious illness due to flu. As immune defense diminishes with age, older adults are increasingly susceptible to flu complications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of higher dose flu vaccines for people 65 years and older.
This fall, in advance of flu season, visit your healthcare provider or pharmacist to get the right vaccine
for you. This is also a good time to catch up on any other immunizations that your provider recommends.
Review Medicare Coverage
Medicare is the government health insurance program for Americans 65 and older and others who qualify. Many Medicare beneficiaries choose or change their plans during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which takes place between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. HealthSpring is offering a host of Medicare options for 2026. The company provides these tips for selecting a plan:
• Check for plan changes: Review your plan every AEP, especially if you’ve experienced changes to your health, lifestyle or finances.
It’s especially important to read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter – delivered every September – to find out about any modifications to your current plan.
• Dig into the details: A good plan is one that includes your favorite providers and specialists and covers the medications you currently take. When reviewing plans, take these factors into consideration.
• Consider all your options: Medicare Advantage plans cover everything Original Medicare does, so do your research to see if these plans will work for you.
• Learn more: Before enrolling in a particular plan, be sure you understand the details. Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800633-4227) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; TTY users can call 1-877-4862048. Or, visit the Medicare Plan Finder website at Medicare. gov/plan-compare.

Plastics are no longer just an environmental issue — they are a direct threat to human health. Found in homes, workplaces and schools, scientists are increasingly finding plastics inside our bodies.
Microplastics and toxic chemicals have been detected in human blood, feces, lungs, breast milk, placentas, stomachs and even brains — and babies are exposed before they are even born.
Nanoplastics are particularly concerning because they are small enough to enter individual cells and tissues, raising red flags about long-term health effects. With the Plastic House Challenge, Greenpeace USA asks participants a series of questions about items in three rooms of their homes — kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms — to identify hidden sources of plastic exposure in their daily life. How Hidden Plastic in Your Daily Life is Harming Your Health
(Continued From Page 07)
The survey aims to raise awareness about the risks of plastic pollution while empowering consumers to demand accountability and action from corporations and government.
What the Science Shows
Plastics are made with over 16,000 chemicals, at least 26% of which are highly hazardous to human and environmental health. Many remain untested, and each major type of plastic can contain more than 400 chemicals of concern. Advocates say that contrary to popular belief, recycling is not a safe solution to the problem of excessive production, as less than 5% is recycled, and the process can actually increase concentrations of toxic chemicals.
Health Impacts
Plastics release or contain substances linked to:
• Hormone disruption (endocrine disorders)
• Cancers
• Reproductive issues (infertility, premature birth, early puberty)
• Neurological disorders and learning disabilities
• Immune dysfunction and chronic inflammation
• Obesity, diabetes and metabolic disease
• Respiratory diseases
• Cardiovascular problems
• Digestion disorders
While all people are exposed, communities living near petrochemical and plastic production facilities — often low-income and marginalized — bear a disproportionate burden. Numerous studies show that residents of these “fenceline” communities face higher rates of premature birth, low birth weight, childhood cancers, respiratory and heart disease, mental health disorders and other
chronic illnesses.
Pathways of Exposure
Humans encounter plastic chemicals and particles daily through three main routes:
• Ingestion. Packaging leaches chemicals into food and beverages. Over 12,200 chemicals are used in foodcontact materials; at least 600 are toxic, while another 3,500 lack public toxicity data. Migration of chemicals into food is so common that U.S. law defines them as “indirect food additives.” Microplastics also absorb other environmental toxins – such as heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides from the environment – which people ingest along with the plastic particles themselves.
• Inhalation. Microplastics are released into household air from carpets, clothing, bedding, toys, packaging films and dust. Indoor air can contain 60 times more microplastics than outdoor air and people spend up to 90% of their lives indoors. Families are estimated to inhale 2,000–7,000 microplastics daily, and a person may inhale the
equivalent of the Eiffel Tower in plastic over a lifetime.
• Skin absorption. Personal care products, cosmetics and fragrances often contain or are packaged in plastics with hazardous chemicals such as phthalates, PFAS and parabens. These are absorbed directly through the skin.
Regulatory Gaps
Despite the scale of human exposure, Greenpeace USA policy analysts say that transparency is lacking; 25% of plastic chemicals lack public identity data, 50% lack information on their function, 56% lack data on their presence in plastics, and 66% lack hazard information.
With just 6% of plastic chemicals regulated internationally and U.S. food packaging regulations covering only a fraction of chemicals in use, the public is left largely unprotected. Learn more about the Plastic House Challenge by visiting https://www.greenpeace.org/usa/ plastic-house-challenge/.
Protecting ecosystems and human health from plastic goes beyond personal choices. According to advocates, it will require a global effort to reduce plastic production at the source, eliminate toxic plastic chemicals and expand safer, reusable alternatives. (StatePoint)
Trump’s Letter To New Citizens Unveiled –Highlights Assimilation,
(Continued From Page 01)
Trump says in the message. The letter congratulates recipients, focusing less on diversity and seeing naturalization as an assimilation into American traditions and values: “America has always welcomed those who embrace our values, assimilate into our society and pledge allegiance to our country,” the letter reads. “This rich heritage is now yours to protect, promote, and pass down to the next generation. Our history is now your history. Our customs are now your customs. And our Constitution is now yours to safeguard, honor, and respect.”
The president also underscores the civic dimensions of citizenship: “The United States is now your homeland, and you stand as a part of one Nation under God. You have pledged your heart to America—and in return, she offers the boundless promise of freedom and opportunity.” While continuing to push for deportations of undocumented migrants, Trump has insisted he supports lawful immigration, Fox News pointed out. “I’m fine with legal immigration,” he said in his first press conference of his second term. “We need people and I’m absolutely
National Heritage
fine with it – we want to have it.”
DHS has reintroduced stricter vetting practices, including neighborhood interviews. The timing of the letter’s distribution—on Constitution Day—is deliberate. Trump ties citizenship not only to opportunity but also to responsibility: “We applaud your devotion to our country, our people, our history and our great American story. As long as the American people continue to love our country and uphold our values, there is nothing that our Nation cannot achieve. Our communities will flourish. Our people will prosper.”
The messaging comes as Trump continues to link immigration policy to public safety. Following the recent beheading of a motel manager in Dallas by an undocumented immigrant with a prior criminal record, Trump had earlier made it clear, “Being soft on these illegal immigrant criminals is over.” The president closes his letter with a note of optimism: “Our traditions will endure. And our future will be brighter, more radiant, and more hopeful than ever before.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)
Supporting The Troops This National Day Of The Deployed
October 26, National Day of the Deployed, honors military service members who have been deployed in service of the United States and acknowledges the sacrifices that military families make during deployments.
First observed in 2006 in North Dakota, by 2012, every state nationwide was observing this day.
Deployment Challenges
Military deployments – when service members are required to leave their home station and travel abroad – typically last between six and 12 months and can be hard on both service members and families.
While deployments don’t always involve combat, they can involve
long hours, specialized work, and few of the creature comforts and resources service members might enjoy at their

Identifying The Most Affordable Colleges For Real-World Students
College rankings headlines are often dominated by the same names: Ivy Leagues, elite research universities and schools that admit only a fraction of applicants. But that leaves out most students, say experts.
“The average GPA across all U.S. high schools is 3.0, according to the College Board.
For these everyday students, and for families earning an average income between $50,000-$150,000 – the journey to higher education should be about finding a college they can both attend and afford with confidence,” says William Staib, co-founder and president of College Raptor, Citizens college planning platform.
That’s why this year, College Raptor is reframing the conversation with its 2026 list of the 25 Most Affordable Great Colleges for “B” Students.
Prioritizing possibility over prestige, the list highlights institutions that provide both quality and affordability for the students and families who represent the national average,
giving
accessible pathways to higher education often left out of traditional rankings.
To draw up the list, Raptor leveraged insights from hundreds of colleges, millions of machine learning models and other publicly available data to evaluate academics, student success, faculty quality, campus resources and financial health.
Every institution on the list is considered a match or safety for “B” students, with an average acceptance rate of 74%.
Graduates of these institutions with B academics and $50,000-150,000 financial profiles would pay on average less than 9% of their income towards student debt.
That’s more than 20% less than other four-year colleges that are most likely to accept “B” students.
Plus, each school ranks in the top half of accredited four-year institutions nationwide, demonstrating that affordability doesn’t mean sacrificing excellence.
To truly assess the value a school provides, parents and collegebound students should not only
and children often feel the strain of separation, and sometimes even understand the risks their parent undertakes.
Easing These Burdens Fortunately, members of the military and their families don’t have to undergo these burdens alone.
The USO not only recognizes the importance of the National Day of the Deployed, but seeks to ease the stress and loneliness of service members and their families every day during a deployment in the following ways:
• The USO Care Package Program harkens back to the organization’s early years, when Americans packed boxes full of “tastes of home” to keep deployed service members connected to the people, places and things they cherish.
think about the next four years ahead, but well into the future.
They can use the list to calculate their return on investment, as schools are ranked by loan payment as a percentage of typical starting salary, tying affordability directly to earning potential.
This metric represents the estimated percentage of a student’s expected starting monthly income that would be required to repay their projected student loans within 10 years.
It communicates the proportion of monthly income taken up by loan repayment.

clude social gatherings that help them build their community, baby showers that provide a touch of home for moms-to-be away from their families and friends during their pregnancies, educational and professional development opportunities, and financial planning resources.
At many USO locations, military children can find kid-friendly activities designed to help them make friends with fellow military kids, or bond with their families, including arts and crafts, family game nights, cooking classes and scavenger hunts.
“This year will be my youngest’s first year of school as a kindergartner and I was super bummed that I wouldn’t be there for the start of it,” said Staff Sgt. Mathew Annis.
Those small gestures provide the comfort and care that make a difference for service members stationed far from home. In 2024, the USO delivered nearly 350,000 care packages in close to 90 countries.
• Through the USO’s Reading Program, service members can walk into a participating USO location where they are deployed, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and have that recording emailed to their child – and a copy of the book shipped home.
Children can, in turn, record themselves reading a book on camera, add that book to their personal collection and send the recording to their deployed family member.
• USO centers are not just a home away from home for service members – they also host activities, special events, and programs for military families.

Climate May Up Health Risks, Cause Massive Productivity Loss
GENEVA – The rise in global temperatures is likely to cause severe health risks and result in the loss of more than $1.5 trillion in produc-
tivity, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum on September 18.The loss will be borne mainly by sectors such as
food and agriculture, the built environment, health, and healthcare.

India-Canada Ties Improve After Months Of Strain, Despite Ongoing Security Concerns
(Continued From Page 01)
On September 18, National Security Advisors from the two countries met in New Delhi for regular security consultations.
The discussions were described as a follow-up to the “very positive and constructive” meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark
Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June.
The renewed engagement also included pre-Foreign Office Consultations, where officials agreed to reactivate channels of cooperation in areas such as trade, defense, energy, civil nuclear, security, and law enforcement.
Both sides welcomed progress made since June, particularly the return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on September 19 addressed reports of heightened Khalistani threats against Indian diplomatic missions in Canada, including the Consulate in Vancouver.
The MEA emphasized that ensuring security for Indian diplomatic establishments is the responsibility of the Canadian government and confirmed that the issue has been formally raised with Ottawa.
Officials on both sides signaled optimism that the recent steps would help stabilize the relationship and create space for broader cooperation after a prolonged period of tension. (IANS) (Courtesy: https:// indiawest.com/)
able Development Impact Meetings 2025, arrived as preparations intensify for COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
The findings highlight that adapting to extreme heat, infectious diseases, and other health risks accelerating due to climate change is now a strategic business imperative. “We are entering an era in which protecting worker health is proving essential to business continuity and long-term resilience,” said Eric White, Head of Climate Resilience, World Economic Forum.
“Every year we delay embedding resilience into business decisions, the risks to human health and productivity climb and the costs of adaptation rise,” White added.
Sharing sector-specific vulnerabilities, the report showed that in food and agriculture, climate health impacts could lead to $740 billion in lost output, triggering serious consequences for global food security.
In the built environment sector, climate health impacts are projected to result in productivity losses of $570 billion. Further, the health and healthcare sector stands to lose
$200 billion in productivity due to workforce climate health illness, while rising climate-driven disease rates among the wider population could compound demand pressures.
The insurance industry, meanwhile, is projected to experience a sharp rise in climate health claims. The report, developed in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), urged companies to act now to protect workforce health, build operational resilience, and safeguard productivity before the costs of climate adaptation become unmanageable.
It showed that investing early in climate health adaptation can benefit beyond risk mitigation, unlocking new opportunities for innovation and growth while meeting emerging market needs.
This includes developing climateresilient crops that protect food systems, heat-stable medications that expand medicine availability, cooling technologies that keep construction workers safe, and new insurance models protecting communities against climate health shocks, the report said. Small Business Owners Remain Confident Despite Trade Challenges
(Continued From Page 02)
Fears around prices
The top challenge business owners are facing is uncertainty around pricing. Fifty-one percent said they anticipate price increases from suppliers. That’s up from the 45% in the spring, but down significantly from a year ago (59%). Consequently, 58% of respondents said they expected to increase prices.
Among those who expect to raise prices, 54% are attributing increases to non-labor costs – a sharp increase from the 37% who answered that way in 2024. Fewer business owners reported the cost of labor (30%), or favorable market conditions (15%) as reason to raise prices.
Tariffs are playing a key role in
pricing, according to respondents.
Forty-eight percent reported that they believe tariffs are leading to increased prices that suppliers are charging them. Similarly, 46% reported that tariffs contributed to their decision to raise prices they charge customers.
“It’s a bit of a roller coaster effect when it comes to opinions on pricing over the last few survey cycles,” Faucher said. “As they weigh how tariffs may impact their
business going forward, it seems many business owners accept that price increases are likely, but perhaps not as definitive as a year ago.”
A pause on hiring
As prices rise, business owners who reported planning to hire over the next six months dipped to just 13% (from 18% a year ago.) Respondents’ top hiring challenges were:
• Lack of skills or experience need-
ed (30%)
• Lack of applicants (29%)
• Candidates’ inability to meet legal/security requirements (16%)
Fall Economic Outlook by the numbers:
• 44% of respondent believe a recession is likely in the next 12 months.
• 17% say higher tariffs have increased the level of inventory of their business. It mirrors the percentage of business owners who say tariffs have decreased their level of inventory;
• 52% say tariffs have had no impact at all on their level of inventory;
• 23% believe their cash reserves will be lower at this time next year, marking the first time in survey history that number has exceeded
the percentage of respondents who feel cash reserves will be higher in a year (22%); and
• 24% believe Artificial Intelligence is the technology that will most impact their business over the next two years.
To see the full 2025 PNC Fall Economic Outlook Survey results visit pnc.mediaroom.com.
“While it may seem counterintuitive that business owners remain optimistic despite reporting fears around tariffs, inflation and profits, those concerns are still statistically lower than in other survey cycles,” said PNC chief economist, Gus Faucher. “After powering through a global pandemic, it’s unsurprising that leaders feel confident in their ability to prosper despite today’s challenges.” (StatePoint)
Community Water Fluoridation Is A Popular And Proven Dental Health Benefit
In a May 2025 national poll by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association in cooperation with the American Dental Association (ADA), more than 4 out of 5 survey takers said they are familiar with fluoride’s role in oral health and that fluoride is particularly important for children, while more than 2 out of 3 said they are comfortable with fluoride in their tap water.
Fluoride, a mineral that naturally occurs in water sources such as rivers, lakes and oceans, helps prevent tooth decay by making the surface of teeth stronger and more cavity-resistant. It’s often the “active ingredient” in cavity-fighting toothpastes.
Adding fluoride to tap water is like adding vitamins and minerals to foods and drinks, helping people access important nutrients for their oral and overall health. So why has it become such a focus of conversation lately?
Misleading data from countries with fluoride levels that can reach
30 times the amount in U.S. public water systems have created a flurry of misinformation, yet still, this survey shows that people know and trust in fluoride’s power to help prevent tooth decay at optimal levels.
If community water fluoridation is being debated in your hometown, here’s what America’s dentists want you to know.
Fluoride in water saves you pain and money: Cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease, and community water fluoridation is proven to do two important things: reduce tooth decay by 25% in children and adults and reduce the costs and complications of severe cavities.
The ADA Health Policy Institute estimates removing fluoride from all U.S. community water systems would cost $46 billion over five years because of increased dental care costs.
Estimates aside, present-day proof exists. When Calgary, Alberta;
Windsor, Ontario; and Juneau, Alaska stopped adding fluoride to their water, dental disease and its associated costs rose in children and adults.
Five years after the ban in Windsor was implemented, a dental health report found that the rate of children with tooth decay and/or requiring urgent care for untreated dental health issues increased by 51%. Windsor and Calgary have since resumed community water fluoridation.
Bans don’t help fight dental disease: Community water fluoridation is simply the adjustment of naturally occurring fluoride in
drinking water to an optimal level to prevent tooth decay.
Almost all U.S. water sources naturally contain fluoride, but often not enough to be effective in preventing cavities.
When a state bans fluoridation — as Utah and Florida did recently — communities that were adding fluoride to their water lose access to a proven dental health benefit, while others lose the opportunity to start.
While someone who lives in an area with fluoridated public water can easily access water without fluoride if they choose — through purified bottled water or at-home water filtration — someone who wants fluoridated water where it’s been banned has had their choice taken away without valid alterna-
tives offered.
This is especially harmful to rural and low-income communities and those who lack regular access to dental care.
“Fluoridated water is a simple, inexpensive way to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities,” said ADA dentist, Scott L. Tomar, D.M.D., Dr.P.H. “Take away that access, and we know the risk for cavities increases.”
The bottom line is that fluoride is popular and good for your dental health. For more information about fluoride in water, visit MouthHealthy.org/fluoridation and ADA. org/fluoride.
“The freedom to access optimally fluoridated public water and receive its dental health benefits should not be denied because of misinformed policy decisions that ignore community needs and majority support for fluoride,” said Dr. Tomar. “Community water fluoridation is the popular and proven choice.” (StatePoint)
Tips To Overcome Home Renovation ‘Decision Paralysis’
One of the hardest parts of home remodeling can be simply getting started. With so many styles, colors and materials to choose from, it’s all too common to experience “decision paralysis.” Rather than put off your exterior renovation further, consider these tips and tools for nailing down the details:
Browse
Online tools can both help you bring your vision to life -- and decide what that vision is. ProVia’s Design Center is an innovative tool that lets you browse and save colors, coordinating palettes and product images. As you explore the Color Palettes page, which features color wheels representing unique palettes, along with suggested product colors and inspirational imagery, keep these factors in mind:
Architectural style. Understanding the features that define your home’s design style is essential
in color selection. For instance, a colonial-style home may look best with classic, neutral colors, while a modern-style home might benefit from bold, vibrant accents.
Landscaping and surroundings. Look to your surroundings for inspiration, selecting colors that harmonize with your landscape to create a cohesive and visually appealing look.
Color psychology. Colors have the power to evoke specific emotions and moods. Think about what you want guests to feel when they come to your front door, or what you want to feel each time you pull into your driveway.
For instance, warm colors like red and yellow can create a welcoming and energetic feel, while cool colors like blue and green can create a sense of calm and tranquility.
Signing up for a My Design Account at provia.com/register allows
you to create and save your own vision boards, so you can compile your favorite ideas in one place.
“In addition to any color palette images you’ve saved, you can ‘favorite’ other images on the site by clicking the heart in the upper right corner. Use your saved images to create whatever you want, whether it’s a board with just entry door ideas, or a board to visualize your favorite colors together,” advises Jennifer Kline, digital experience
supervisor at ProVia.
Visualize
Are you more of a big-picture person, preferring to see how all the parts fit together as a whole? It can be hard to imagine how your home will look by holding up a siding color swatch or trying to visualize a new metal roof to replace your worn-out asphalt shingles.
This inability to “see” the finished
result in your mind’s eye can be frustrating. Fortunately, the ProVia Visualizer tool enables you to preview colors and styles on your home, so you know exactly how it will turn out. Simply upload a photo of your house and then experiment with products. Get creative with door and window configurations, siding styles and shades, stone profiles and grout colors, and metal roofing options.
“Purchasing home exterior products is a big decision, which is why it’s nice to visually try before you buy. The ProVia Visualizer lets you preview different design and product selections so you can move forward with your project with confidence,” says Kline.
While the endless possibilities of a home renovation can be exciting, they can also make it seem overwhelming. Fortunately, increasingly sophisticated digital tools can help you define your style and see your vision through. (StatePoint)
The Benefits And Basics Of Lawn Irrigation
The only thing better than a healthy lawn and garden?
A healthy lawn and garden that’s given just the right amount of water at just the right time, all without having to lift a finger. Enter: smart lawn irrigation systems.
In a recent episode of Done-In-AWeekend Projects from Exmark, irrigation expert Tom Tootle from Toro Irrigation shared these insights, so you can keep your lawn green, and garden pristine, all season long.
Why Lawn Irrigation Matters
Forgetting a few days of watering or experiencing a drought can put the hours and dollars you’ve spent perfecting your outdoor spaces at risk. An irrigation system however is like insurance for your landscape.
“You protect every room in your home with an insurance policy. So why not protect the biggest ‘room’ of your home: your yard?” says Tootle.
Irrigation System Breakdown
When people think “irrigation system,” they tend to think of un-
derground pipes and sprinkler heads—which is half the truth.
In fact, it all starts with a controller that uses low voltage wiring to direct a series of electrical valves and zones throughout your yard.
This enables you to tailor your watering schedules based on the specific needs of different areas, such as wide-open patches of lawn or garden beds in ample shade.
Patches of lawn are typically kept watered by rotors that rotate to cover large areas, allowing you to cover your lawn with a minimal number of heads.
Then, for smaller areas (like your gardens), sprinklers are used. You can adjust them to spray from 1-8
For gardens that need a gentler touch, drip irrigation (or similar low-volume systems) delivers slow, steady water at the base of plants, reducing evaporation and keeping foliage dry—a must for disease prevention.
Saving Nature
and Money
Irrigation systems aren’t all about convenience, they’re also ecoand wallet-friendly. Some of today’s smart systems feature high-efficiency nozzles that can save up to 30% of your water over a conventional system.
They also utilize sensors that detect rainfall, optimizing schedules and water usage for each zone.
“If Mother Nature does the work, your irrigation system takes the day off,” says Tootle. “A smart system waters only when it needs to, saving water, slashing utility bills, and helping your lawn and garden thrive.”
Upgrades and Maintenance
Already have an
older irrigation system? Many systems can be upgraded without having to rip everything out and start over.
Tootle advises having a professional service your system at least annually to check for leaks, re-calibrate rotors, and in colder climates, winterize it to avoid frozen pipes and cracked valves.
It’s also important to consider growth. If your system hasn’t been updated in a few years, plants and trees may have grown to the point where zones need to be reprogrammed for optimal coverage.
Installation
When it comes to a brand-new installation, professionals can help ensure the process won’t make a big mess of your lawn. Just be sure to schedule your install during your lawn’s peak growing phase.
For warm-season grasses, that’s May through August. For coolseason grasses, that’s early spring or fall.
For more insights, watch “Lawn Irrigation 101,” a new episode of “Done-In-A-Weekend Projects,” an original series from lawn care equipment manufacturer, Exmark.
To watch the video, visit Exmark’s Backyard Life, a unique multimedia destination focused on helping homeowners improve their outdoor living spaces.
There you can also download additional tips and view other Exmark Original Series videos.
“A modern irrigation system is one of the best ways protect the time and energy you’ve poured into your landscape, and promote a healthy, beautiful lawn,” says Tootle. (StatePoint)
India Monitors Nepal As Internal Conflict Threatens Stability
NEW DELHI -As Nepal picks its way to peace and democracy, reports of a conflict among constituents of the Gen Z movement have made the region wary, with India watching the situation closely.
The Nepal Stock Exchange tumbled on September 18, losing 160.33 points. Trading was halted for the day after the index tumbled 6 per cent to close at 2,511.91 points.
The sudden fall reflects heightened uncertainty among investors, with many reacting to the political unrest and its potential impact on the economy, reported the Kathmandu Post.
Young protesters who toppled the government are not a single cohesive bloc; they are divided between multiple leaders, platforms, and tactical goals.
Trouble began early this week with a group of demonstrators led by Sudan Gurung gathering outside interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s official residence in Kathmandu.
They were protesting against the appointment of Om Prakash Aryal as the country’s Home and Law Minister in the interim cabinet.
They warned that it was they who made Karki the Prime Minister, and if need be, they can remove her too.
A section of the protesters had raised their voices against nam-
ing the septuagenarian earlier, demanding “a younger person as Prime Minister”.
The other name as a PM candidate that had surfaced was that of the 54-year-old engineer Kulman Ghising. He is part of the current cabinet, in charge of three portfolios. Ghising, who previously led the Nepal Electricity Authority, has been instrumental in solving Nepal’s power situation.
Incidentally, Aryal is said to have close ties with Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah. He is alleged to have entered the cabinet through “selfnomination”. Some Gen Z movement participants view this as a betrayal of their movement’s democratic ideals.
Shah, 35 — an engineer-turnedrapper-turned-politician — won the mayoral contest as an independent candidate. He has a wide following among Nepal’s youth.
Shah was a major force behind the Gen Z movement. He was named as the initial choice of the protesters to lead an interim government. But he refused, with a social media post in support of Karki as Prime Minister.
Gurung — another leading face in the uprising — is the founder of the youth-led non-profit organisation, Hami Nepal. The NGO is involved in social work and did extensive work in the 2015 earthquake.
The 36-year-old activist Gurung was earlier an event organiser and
a DJ, but the 2015 Nepal earthquake changed his life.
He is known to be steadfast and sometimes emotional. A video went viral showing one of Gurung’s supporters pushing a journalist on the ground, purportedly at a press conference organized on Sunday, September 14, in Kathmandu.
The video shows journalists later assaulting the
perpetrator, as chaos erupts at the venue.
In the current situation, security watchers are wary of the youth leaders falling out with each other. With Pakistani net users already instigating online, the situation may be used by countries with vested interests.
It raises risks of a return to unrest and a spillover, worry experts, rais-
ing the chances of arms smuggling and infiltration across the porous Indo-Nepal border.
Foreign powers, who are ready to exploit the situation, can mislead Gen Z to create a parallel authority and long-term unrest.
Reports of such situations have come from other neighboring countries earlier, they warn. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
India-Us Airports In Turmoil? Flight Fares Surge After Trump’s Surprising
H-1B Visa Move; ‘Extremely Bad Situation’
During this time, many Indians working overseas return home for Durga Puja, which begins next week.
Furthermore, individuals stranded in India noticed a significant increase in the cost of a direct flights to the US as airlines sought to capitalize on the disruption triggered by Trump. With Indians accounting for almost 70% of all H-1B visa beneficiaries, the move strikes them extremely hard.
According to the new guidelines, the H1-B holders have been asked to reach the United States before 12:01 a.m. EDT (9:31 a.m. IST) on September 21. After that, no H-1B worker will be permitted to enter the US unless the sponsoring firm pays the $100,000 charge.
Top IT
Microsoft, and JP Morgan have warned their H-1B visa holders not to leave the US. Those currently overseas have been requested to return to the United States immediately.

US-India flight fares see massive spike, netizens report chaos at airports
Within two hours following Trump’s statement, the cost of a one-way ticket from New Delhi to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York increased from about ₹37,000 to ₹70,000–80,000.
“Flights from New Delhi to NYC are currently $4,500. They are all rushing back to the states because they are worried about the new H-1B visa rules,” one X user claimed.
Social media was inundated with reports of Indian travelers leaving US airports in the middle of their flight.
At San Francisco International Airport, for example, a number of Indian passengers persisted on getting off the plane, causing an Emirates aircraft to be delayed for hours.
“It was complete chaos… many H-1B visa holders just refused to fly once the news broke,” a traveller named Masud Rana posted on X.
Similar incidents occurred in other transit centers, such as Dubai.
“An international flight packed with Indians from the Bay Area had completed boarding,” explained chartered accountant Kaustav Majumdar, adding that “when panic erupted and people pleaded to get off.”

Wash Your Hands: While it’s probably the first rule you learn about getting sick as a child, washing your hands remains a critical first line of defense. Use warm, soapy water and rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds. Don’t for-
How To Upgrade Your Home For Multi-Generational Living
Multi-generational living is becoming increasingly common. However, as families grow and change, so must their homes.
Danielle DeBoe Harper, senior creative style manager at Moen, a leader in water experiences in the home, shares three ways to develop aesthetically pleasing spaces that cater to everyone’s needs.
Create a Connected Kitchen
The kitchen is a place where everyone seems to gather. When planning your space, focus on a layout that fosters interaction.
“Products like pot fillers above the stove eliminate the strain of carrying heavy pots of water for younger family members or those with mobility challenges, and touchless faucets help reduce the spread of
germs – important in a large household, especially one with children.
The good news is that you can choose decorative fixtures that blend effortlessly with different design styles, from traditional to transitional and even contemporary industrial.
When selecting shower fixtures, consider installing a multi-spray

showerhead for a customizable showering experience.
Flexibility is key for everyday living, so invest in furniture that adapts to different needs.

Commit to Healthier Eating: Foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains are recommended by experts as essential foods for optimizing your immune system. Consider fresh grapes, a prime example of food that contains beneficial plant compounds linked to health benefits in humans.
Healthy cells are the foundation of good health, and the antioxidants and other polyphenols naturally found in grapes help protect the health and function of cells. The good news is that improving your diet doesn’t require a complete overhaul - small steps such as swapping in fresh California grapes for processed snacks or simply adding a handful of fresh grapes to your day will add these beneficial compounds to your daily routine.
Or, you can add grapes to recipes like this Lemony California Grape and Beet Salad, a vibrant and fresh melody of color and flavor. Roasted red and yellow beets meet sweet and juicy grapes, peppery arugula and pumpkin seeds all brought together with a zesty lemon vinaigrette.
Studies suggest some grape compounds may positively influence immune function, including resveratrol and certain flavonoids. Additional studies show adding heart-healthy grapes to your daily diet can help support brain, colon and skin health. Grapes are also a good source of vitamin K, which may help support lung health.
Avoid Others Who are Sick: Along with washing your hands frequently, steering clear of people who are ill may sound like a no-brainer, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. When loved ones, close friends or coworkers come down with a cold or flu, do your best to keep your distance and avoid touching items with which they came into contact. After bedtime routines with a sick child or afternoon meetings with an under-the-weather associate, thoroughly wash your hands
and clean commonly used surfaces like doorknobs or conference room keyboards.
Prioritize Hydration: Even during cooler weather, staying hydrated remains important for immune health by keeping the body’s defenses functioning properly. Drink water throughout the day, and for an extra dose, increase hydration by eating foods with high water content like grapes, which contain about 82% water.

Helping Kids Make Money Lessons Real In A Digital Age
In today’s world, it’s rare for kids to hand over a few crumpled dollar bills for a purchase.
Most transactions happen online or with a tap of a card, which can make money feel less tangible to the next generation.
However, that shift doesn’t mean financial lessons have to get lost –it just means they should be taught differently.
From budgeting for a favorite purchase to learning about investing, the digital landscape provides ample opportunities to help kids build smart habits.
Teach Real-World Money Management with Digital Tools
Being able to check balances in real time – and seeing the impact of a purchase immediately – helps kids understand budgeting in a hands-on way. When the balance gets low, the lesson is clear.
Parents can also use digital purchases as teachable moments. A $10 virtual item in a game might sound appealing, but comparing it to something tangible, like a trip to the movies or a special snack, can help kids think about trade-offs and decide what’s worth the money.
Use Saving Goals and Compound Interest to Encourage Smart Habits
Saving is another concept technology can make more tangible.
Setting a goal such as a new bike,
Why Now Is The Time To Replace An Aging HVAC System
As cooler weather sets in, households across the country face a tough question: keep repairing their old heating and cooling systems or finally replace them with new ones.
While squeezing every penny out of an old unit might seem like a way to save money, experts caution that waiting can lead to higher costs, less comfort and missed opportunities for major savings.
The Hidden Cost of ‘Just One More Repair’
Older HVAC systems often need frequent service and those repair bills can add up. Bandage-type repairs on current units could lead to more surprise bills from repair people who usually do not offer financing plans.
With contractor schedules filling up during peak seasons, a breakdown at the wrong time could mean long delays for repairs or replacementsleaving your home uncomfortable when you need it most.
Beyond the financial drain, there is the stress of dealing with an unexpected breakdown during extreme weather. Having to replace an HVAC system in the middle of a breakdown denies you the opportunity to shop around and purchase a
system that best fits your home and needs. Similarly, replacing an unreliable system with a newer model can provide consistent comfort, improved efficiency and financial predictability.
Fall is the Ideal Time for Replacement
Fall is considered the “shoulder season” in the HVAC industry. Contractors generally have more availability than during the busy summer and winter months, which makes scheduling easier.
With the more moderate weather conditions during fall, you may be more comfortable without heating or cooling while the new system is being installed. Acting in fall also avoids the risk of facing a system failure in the middle of a cold snap
when demand is high and options may be limited.
Incentives Can Make Upgrading More Affordable
For a limited time, programs are available to help homeowners manage the cost of replacement. This fall, certain high-efficiency systems from Carrier qualify for rebates of up to $2,100 and financing plans with 0% APR for 60 months, giving families the ability to spread out payments without extra interest.
In addition, federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act offer homeowners tax credits - such as up to $2,000 back for installing a qualifying high-efficiency heat pump - further lowering the net cost. These IRA incentives are set to expire at the end of the year, making this fall the perfect time to upgrade.
a sports jersey or a piece of tech becomes more engaging when children can track their progress visually. Some apps even offer interest on savings, giving kids a first glimpse of how money can grow over time.
As children grow into teens, their curiosity about money often expands into investing.
This can be an ideal time to open a custodial brokerage account and explore concepts like diversification, risk and long-term strategy. Purchasing fractional shares of companies they recognize can make the learning process relatable.
Teach Credit, Debt and Security Early
Ensure Comfort and Efficiency During the Holidays
The holiday season is a busy time and usually includes hosting loved ones. Guarantee your celebrations go off without a hitch and your guests stay warm and comfortable by replacing your old unit during the fall months.
Modern HVAC systems do more than heat and cool; they can help maintain balanced humidity, reduce drafts, improve air quality and eliminate uneven hot or cold spots throughout your home. Plus, the energy efficiency of your new heating and cooling system may help you save on monthly utility bills; savings you can put toward holiday shopping.
While it may be tempting to prolong the life of an old HVAC system, delaying replacement can end up being more expensive and stressful. With incentives, financing and tax credits available this fall, planning ahead can help you save money and enjoy year-round comfort.

It’s also important to cover topics like credit, debt and security before kids start managing money on their own.
Teens should understand how borrowing works, why paying bills on time matters and how to protect themselves from identity theft. In some cases, freezing a minor’s credit until they are older can be a smart precaution.
Keep the Conversation Going
Above all, money lessons should be an ongoing conversation. Asking kids what they’re hearing from friends, teachers or online sources can lead to meaningful discussions and create teachable moments.
The tools may have changed, but the goal remains the same: helping kids develop the skills and confidence to manage money wisely. By meeting them where they are in the digital world, parents can make financial lessons real, relevant and lasting.

Understanding Barriers To Mental Health Care For Rural Americans
Rural America is experiencing a mental health emergency. For residents of rural communities, there is evidence of higher rates of mental illness compared to those in urban communities. For example, the suicide rate is 49% higher among rural residents compared to urban residents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-
tion. Yet people living in rural areas are less likely to have access to mental health services.

Stay Resilient And Prepared For Disasters
As many know from experience, disasters can happen to anyone, anywhere.
Natural or human-caused disasters can be highly localized or have an impact regionally or even nationally. While warnings can vary from a few minutes to a few days, taking action to prepare for the unexpected can help people - and their communities - become more resilient.
Resilience is the way communities anticipate, adapt, act, recover and grow in the face of hardship and crisis.
With its hyper-local community focus and representation in nearly every community in the U.S., United Way partners with donors, volunteers and community leaders to repair homes, restore services, rebuild businesses and reignite hope.
Extending its effort to help people prepare for disasters, those partnerships are continuing to grow.
Earlier this year, United Way Worldwide and Verizon launched United We Prepare in 14 regions across the U.S. The pilot aims to create resilient communities that are ready for disasters and boost awareness of preparedness best practices through workshops and local education campaigns.
“We help our neighbors prepare for disasters before they strike, offering practical tools, clear plans and the confidence that comes from being ready for the unexpected,” said Marcus Coleman, vice president of community resiliency strategy at United Way Worldwide.
Coleman, whose career has focused on disaster preparation and resilience for more than 15 years, leads the team that supports the organization’s global network that prepares for and responds to disasters.
“We are here for the long haul,” Coleman said. “After disasters and public emergencies fade from the headlines, we help communities recover and rebuild. United Way is creating stronger, more resilient communities where neighbors face challenges together, lift one another up and thrive.”
As part of this work, United Way developed a Disaster Preparedness Guide - a curated list of preparedness tips and best practices from leading experts.
Here are five easy steps from this expert-vetted guide everyone can follow today to become more prepared for the next disaster:
1. Identify your support network and emergency contacts
Add the phone numbers of family members, friends and neighbors to your mobile device - categorized as emergency contacts - and make sure they have yours. Also add 211 - the three-digit phone line that connects people to locally available resources - to your contacts. The line also provides emergency and resource information during times of disaster.
2. Get connected
Make sure your phone is enabled to get local alerts and warnings. When emergencies happen, public safety officials use wireless emergency alerts to “ping” enabled mo-

of-pocket costs such as copays, deductibles and health insurance premiums affect rural residents’ ability to access health care and medical treatments. Some people lack medical insurance altogether while others are hesitant to ask for help.
3. Assess needs
Build an emergency kit for home and a “go bag” for the car. Keep a charged power bank in each. Add medical information. Ask yourself and others in your household questions about medical needs, animal care, shelter, food, water, clothing and more.
4. Safeguard key records
Use your phone to take photos of key documents and valuables. Keep electronic copies of these important documents in a passwordprotected format on a removable flash or external hard drive in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe, or a secure cloud-based service.
5. Engage your support network
Now that you’ve taken these steps, make sure your family has done the same. Check in with your closest friends and extended family to share these tips. Discuss who may need extra help and designate someone to get to them in an emergency.

Compounding the mental health challenges rural Americans face, 82% of respondents have one or more barriers to accessing health care and mental health treatments.
Largely due to distance and availability, 85% would rather get medicines from a local pharmacy than travel to a doctor’s office.
This is why legislation like the Ensuring Pathways to Innovative Cures (EPIC) Act, being considered in Congress, is essential for many people in rural areas.
This legislation supports research and development for “small molecule” medicines - basically pills - which are easier to produce and access in rural areas with limited health care services. “Small molecule” medicines can reach the brain easier, which is beneficial in treating mental illness.
Consider some of the common barriers to mental health care in rural communities.
Costs and Other Lifestyle Barriers
The survey found factors like out-
“Many rural residents have a strong sense of self-reliance and won’t seek help for mental health issues,” said Matt Espenshade, president of the Pennsylvania State Grange.
“Programs like Rural Minds are working to normalize conversations around mental health in rural communities. Developing more effective and accessible treatments is critical for rural populations, which is why the EPIC Act, which will encourage such development, is so important for people struggling with mental illness.”
Lack of Awareness of Patient Assistance Programs
Many rural residents are unaware of programs that exist to help pay for medicine, including the Medicine Assistance Tool, a searchable database of patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.
Less than 3 in 5 rural residents know about programs that improve access and affordability of medications and only half are aware of the Medication Prescription Payment Plan. (Continued On Page 18)

Trump Signs Proclamation Imposing Annual $100,000 Fee On H-1B Visas
(Continued From Page 01)
“A hundred-thousand dollars a year for H-1B visas, and all of the big companies are on board. We’ve spoken to them,” Lutnick said at an Oval Office event with the US president.
Trump’s threat to crack down on H-1B visas has become a major flashpoint with the tech industry, which contributed millions of dollars to his presidential campaign. The tech industry relies, more than any other sector of the US economy, on H-1B visa holders.
Roughly two-thirds of jobs secured through the H-1B program are computer-related, government figures show, but employers also use the visa to bring in engineers, educators and healthcare workers.
In the first half of 2025, Amazon had more than 10,000 H-1B visas approved, while Microsoft and Meta Platforms had more than 5,000 approvals each.
The H-1B program offers 65,000 visas annually to employers bringing in temporary foreign workers in specialized fields, with another 20,000 visas for workers with ad-
vanced degrees. Critics of the program, including many US technology workers, argue that it allows firms to suppress wages and sideline Americans who could do the jobs.
Supporters, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, say it brings in highly skilled workers essential to filling talent gaps and keeping firms competitive. Musk, himself a naturalized US citizen born in South Af-
rica, once held an H-1B visa.
Adding new fees “creates disincentive to attract the world’s smartest talent to the US”, Deedy Das, partner at venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, wrote on X. “If the US ceases to attract the best talent, it drastically reduces its ability to innovate and grow the economy.”
The new fee could significantly

Long Distances from Medical Care
Physical distance also plays a factor with approximately 25% of rural residents indicating the distance to medical specialists is a barrier to accessing health care and treatments.
Limited Access to Physicians
There are 20% fewer primary care physicians in rural areas and a shortage of mental health providers - approximately 65% of rural counties lack psychiatrists. It’s estimated there are 68 physicians per 100,000 people in rural communities while urban areas have closer to 84 physicians to serve the same number of residents.
Poor Internet Service
Telehealth for mental services can
help bridge the lack of access to physicians, yet internet service in rural areas is often poor to nonexistent. While the percentage of rural residents with internet access is growing, the Federal Communications Commission estimates about 30% do not have broadband internet.

How You Can Inspire Legislative Action

push up costs for companies, particularly smaller tech firms and startups.
“Either the person is very valuable to the company and America, or they are going to depart and the company is going to hire an American,” Lutnick said at the briefing. “And that’s the point of immigration. Hire Americans and make sure the people coming in are the top, top people. Stop the nonsense.”
Immigration experts are questioning whether the executive branch has the authority to impose the exorbitant annual fee.
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said on Bluesky: “the president has literally zero legal authority to impose a $100,000 fee on visas. None. Zip. Zilch. The only authority Congress has ever given the executive branch here is to charge fees to recover the cost of processing the application.”
Under the current system, H-1B
applicants pay a small fee to enter a lottery and, if selected, subsequent fees that can amount to several thousand dollars, depending on the case. Nearly all the visa fees have to be paid by employers. H-1B visas are approved for a period of three to six years.
The move is the latest effort by the Trump administration to curb, or raise more money from, legal immigration. Last month, the US launched a pilot program allowing consular officers to demand bonds of up to $15,000 for tourist and business visas from countries with high overstay rates or limited vetting data.
That followed Trump’s June travel ban restricting entry from 19 nations. Trump’s first-term administration issued several regulations that aimed to limit access to H-1B visas and give them to higher-paying employers, but the regulations were blocked in federal court.

The agency, which released a Federal Register notice on September 16, announced that the changes are intended to better assess an applicant’s understanding of U.S. history and government.
USCIS Spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said, American citizenship is the “most sacred” in the world and should be reserved for those who fully embrace the nation’s values and are “fully assimilated.”
The changes are aimed at ensuring applicants can demonstrate their ability to read, write, and speak English, as well as a strong grasp of U.S. civics. In addition to the new test, USCIS has already announced several other policy changes.
The agency is restoring robust vetting for all applicants and tightening reviews for disability exceptions to English and civics requirements.
Furthermore, officers have received new guidance on assessing good moral character, now focusing on an applicant’s positive contributions to American society rather than just an absence of bad behavior.
USCIS is also resuming neighborhood investigations to ensure applicants meet all statutory requirements and are worthy of citizenship.

So if you’re tired of traditional cleaning methods that kick up the very dust and debris you’re working to eliminate, it’s time to level up your cleaning tools.
new

Fall Yard Cleanup Tips from Lawn Care Experts
Fall means school is back in session, football season’s beginning, and your lawn is going to need some extra care to stay healthy through winter.
“With the change in seasons, your lawn care routine is also going to change to include less mowing and more dealing with leaves and debris,” says Nick Heiser, product manager at Exmark.
“And if you’ve got a lot of debris and material to get up and off your lawn, you’re going to want to do that by bagging when you mow.”
In “Lawn Mowing Tips for Fall Yard Cleanup,” a video on Ex-
mark’s Backyard Life site, Heiser explains that doing so might require switching out the type of blade you have on your mower.
An additional model in the series, which helps reveal and remove hidden dust from the home, is the S50 Pro. These vacuums are available on Amazon and the Tineco online store.
Fresh, Filtered Water
Once you’ve cleared most of the debris, you should switch back to mulching for the last few cuts of the season to put nutrients back into the ground and allow the lawn to retain moisture.
A micro mulch system, which is an easy-to-use and easy-to-install lawn mower accessory, provides an extra set of blades to break down clippings to a fine mulch, then directs the area of deposit, so you control where the mulch lands.
(StatePoint)
Both tap and bottled water commonly contain contaminants that can be harmful to human health. For better tasting water that’s healthier for you and your family, use one of today’s top-quality water filters designed to remove everything from heavy metals and bacteria to microplastics and pesticides.
During upsurges of humidity, a dehumidifier run
in moist areas like the basement, bathroom and kitchen will reduce the potential for mildew and mold.

Discover the Top 3 Interior Design Trends Right Now
As the theme of “home holistic wellness” has expanded over the last year, distinct trends are leading the direction of interior design.
Moen, North America’s leading consumer faucet brand, has identified the top three trends as: creative expression, personal wellbeing and biophilic design. Based on her visits to trade shows like Paris Maison et Objet and Milan Salone del Mobile; research from Moen’s internal consumer market insights team; and observations from fashion, interior design and pop culture, Moen’s senior creative style manager and trend forecaster, Danielle DeBoe Harper, uncovers how these trends reflect the cultural, social and technological shifts happening today.
Creative Expression
As people continue seeking design choices that align with their distinctive personalities, the trend of creative expression emphasizes customization, transformation and versatility. It’s built on empowering consumers to select fixtures, paint colors, furniture and décor accents that authentically reflect their own inspired style and individuality.
“Homeowners and designers can foster a greater sense of personal identity and belonging through imaginative and expressive design,” says DeBoe Harper.
“Elements of this design direction include statement details like bold colors, mixed metals and dramatic proportions; era-mixing for a dynamic maximalist feel; surrealistinspired pieces that challenge conventional boundaries; and rugs, furniture and other accents that reflect high levels of craftsmanship to bring a feeling of authenticity to a space.”
Available in an array of customization options, the Moen Cambium bathroom suite features a unique blend of raw elements and soft modern design that creates a bold and unforgettable look ideally suited for this trend.
The suite highlights a captivating combination of machine textures, fluted patterns, and a new mixed polished/brushed nickel finish that all work together to enhance the bathroom aesthetic.
Personal Wellbeing
The trend of personal wellbeing reflects the growing societal emphasis on mental and physical health, with design approaches that prioritize comfort and rejuvenation.
“Your home is a sanctuary – a place of peace and relaxation,” says DeBoe Harper. “Personal wellbeing, as a design trend, embodies décor and style elements that embrace coming home to that sense of comfort and mental tranquility.
This can be achieved through soft color palettes; opting for literal comfort pieces, such as oversized sofas and chairs paired with shag rugs; or embracing joyful design through playful, brightly colored aesthetic choices.”
Some also find comfort in nostalgia, pulling design inspiration from everything from old English country houses to Art Deco and even the 1970s; while others ensure wellbeing through thoughtful fixture and appliance choices. One example is installation of a robust water filtration solution like Moen’s Whole Home Water Filtration systems. The whole home systems help remove chemicals and contaminants from every drop of water in the home to support a healthier lifestyle.
Biophilic Design
Humans have an innate desire to connect with the outdoors. The biophilic design trend welcomes the wish to create healthier, more sustainable and more harmonious living and working environments that bring people and nature together.
“Biophilic design goes beyond incorporating plants into your space,” says DeBoe Harper. “Invoking the sky, desert and sea in furniture, lighting, rugs and even curtain choices can elevate the sense of being in the natural world within your own four walls.
We see this trend through design choices like cloud motifs or florals, applications of geological shapes and textures, and creating movement through splashes of water.”
Sustainability is a large part of this trend as well. Investing in high-quality pieces crafted from recycled or reclaimed materials, responsibly sourced wood, or rapidly renewable resources like bamboo, helps create beautiful, durable and functional spaces that not only enhance daily life, but also actively support conservation efforts and lessen your ecological footprint.

Fall In Love With Your Backyard This Fall – Here’s How!
Just because fall is here doesn’t mean your backyard fun has to end! Fall is the perfect season to breathe in crisp air, sip something warm under the stars, watch an outdoor movie, and make the most of your outdoor setup.
With the right tools and a few seasonal upgrades, your backyard can stay the place to be long after Labor Day. Here’s how.
Blow Away the Mess: “Leaf” It to the Pros
Those golden leaves look lovely on trees, not so much on your lawn. A good leaf blower (especially a cordless or battery-powered model) like the Greenworks 80V Cordless Leaf Blower can keep your yard tidy and pathways safe. But to take it up a level, look no further than the Mammotion Yuka robotic mower with sweeper kit. It doesn’t just trim your lawn, it also collects fallen leaves as it goes.
Bring the Heat: Stay Toasty on the Patio
With propane or electric patio heaters, you can keep the chill at bay and enjoy those al fresco dinners well into the season. Try the Dr. Infrared Heater Outdoor Patio Heater for electric convenience or the Hampton Bay 48,000 BTU Patio Heater for classic propane warmth.
Cover Up: Furniture that Survives the Season
Fall weather can be unpredictable, but with water-resistant covers for patio chairs, tables and lounge sets, your stylish setup won’t suffer. Brands like Vailge and Duck Covers make highly rated all-weather options in multiple sizes and styles.
Pool Days Aren’t Over Yet
If you’re one of the lucky ones with a pool, you might be able to stretch swimming season into September, especially with a pool heater. A reliable robotic skimmer like the Bublue BuVortex V5 will spin around your
pool, clearing it of fallen leaves, bugs and branches.
Backyard Movie Magic: Outdoor Projectors
Cooler nights are made for blankets, popcorn and movie marathons under the stars. Outdoor projectors turn backyards into a private cinema. One of the best is the Valerion Vision Master Pro 2, which delivers ultra-bright, cinematic 4K laser projection even in ambient light.
Fall Clean-Ups are Easier with the Right Tools
Pressure washers, trimmers and gutter vacs are great tools to prep your home for colder months. The Sun Joe SPX3000 Pressure Washer is a fan favorite. When paired with a gutter cleaner like the WORX Universal Gutter Cleaning Kit, you’re ready for seasonal upkeep.
Don’t Let Mishaps and Malfunctions Ruin Your Fall Fun
Outdoor gear works hard all year—but colder weather puts added stress on everything from leaf blowers to lounge chairs. When something breaks, it can be expensive to replace. The good news? Many of these items can be protected. The surprise? Most Americans don’t know it.
An Allstate Protection Plans survey found:
• Only 9% know patio tables can be covered
• Just 7% know about patio chairs and umbrellas
• Only 6% realize lounge chairs qualify
And awareness is also low for leaf blowers (34%), robotic pool cleaners (28%) and patio heaters (22%)
Don’t wait for a breakdown. A protection plan helps keep backyard essentials working longer and saves you from surprise repair costs. Visit www.allstateprotectionplans.com for more fall outdoor living tips.
By performing a few maintenance tasks and protecting your gear, you can stretch backyard season into sweater weather. (StatePoint)
How To Prepare For Closing Costs For A Smooth Home Buying Experience
Buying a home? Don’t forget to account for closing costs. These settlement fees are among the last expenses you pay before officially taking ownership of your new home. Here’s what to know:
What are closing costs? Closing costs are fees charged by your lender, real estate agent and other third parties involved in the homebuying transaction.
They include various charges related to property expenses, the mortgage application process and other paperwork. Closing costs include a combination of one-time fees, which may include the loan origination fee, appraisal fee, and initial installments of recurring costs — such as your homeowners insurance and escrow payment.
Why do closing costs matter?
Although closing costs can vary based on the location, size and cost of the property you’re buying, they are important to budget for. Typically amounting to 2% to 5% of the
total loan amount, these fees are due at closing — and can add up to thousands of dollars.
Is it possible to save on closing costs? While these fees may feel like they are set in stone, there are actually key ways you can save on closing costs:
• Research multiple lenders. Comparison shopping can help ensure you are getting the best interest rate and terms available. Freddie Mac’s latest research shows you may be able to save up to $1,200 annually by applying to loans from multiple lenders. However, when you’re reviewing loan estimates, you should also pay close attention to the fee structures and any other items that you will need to pay on closing day.
• Negotiate fees. As part of choosing your lender, you should approach them about negotiating the fees included in your loan estimate, such as origination fees and processing fees. In many cases,
financing charges are open for discussion and you may be able to get your lender to reduce or waive certain fees.
• Shop around for closing services. In addition to fees from your lender, you should expect to pay for additional closing services, possibly including title insurance, home inspections and appraisals. Even though your homebuying team may have a set of professionals they prefer to work with for these services, you can shop around for
more cost-effective options to help lower your closing costs.
• Take advantage of financial aid programs. There are many programs designed to help homebuyers cover down payments and closing costs, especially if you are a first-time homebuyer. Talk to your homebuying team to determine if you qualify for any financial assistance.
• Request seller concessions. When it comes time to negotiate your of-
fer with the seller, you may be able to ask them for some relief on closing costs. For example, the seller may agree to cover some or all of the closing costs as an incentive to get the deal done. However, this is more likely to happen in a buyer’s market.
How can I prepare now? Access resources that can help you plan ahead for closing day, like the Closing Cost Calculator available through My Home by Freddie Mac, a guide to homebuying and homeownership that offers free online tools. Having an accurate estimate of your closing costs can help you have a smooth closing day.
The right tools and knowledge can simplify homebuying and make it more affordable than you might expect. By understanding what fees are included in your closing costs and how to negotiate or reduce these costs, you can feel more empowered and in control of your purchase. (StatePoint)

Beyond The Screen: Your Social Media Detox Plan
Social media has become so ingrained in our daily routines that stepping away can feel incredibly challenging.
The constant urge to scroll, check for updates, and see what others are doing can easily eat up hours of your day.
But a detox doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing, impossible task.
Here are five simple, actionable ways to kickstart a social media detox and actually stick to it.
Set Clear Goals
Before you start, take a moment to
understand your “why.” Are you seeking a break to improve your sleep, dedicate more time to hobbies, or simply reduce your screen time?
Clearly defining your reasons and writing them down will solidify your commitment and give you a powerful reminder to turn to whenever you feel tempted to fall back into old habits.
Start Small
You don’t need to go from 100% usage to 0% overnight. Begin with small, manageable changes. Try a “no social media” rule for the first hour after you wake up, or designate one evening a week as completely screen-free.
These small steps help your mind and body adapt to the change without feeling the pressure of a dras-

tic, immediate cutoff.
Turn Off Notifications
Notifications are designed to pull you back into an app, and they are one of the biggest reasons for endless scrolling.
Go into your phone’s settings and turn off notifications for the apps that distract you the most.
When you’re no longer getting constant alerts, you’ll feel fewer urges to pick up your phone and check for new content.
Fill the Gap with Something New
A detox isn’t just about removing a habit; it’s about replacing it with a better one. Use the time you would have spent scrolling to do something more fulfilling.
Pick up a new book, try a new exercise, start a journal, or simply go for a walk.
Replacing your social media habit with a rewarding activity makes it easier to stay away from the endless feed.
Be Kind to Yourself
It’s normal to slip up. If you find yourself mindlessly opening an app, don’t view it as a failure. A detox is about progress, not perfection.
Even reducing your usage is a significant victory. Acknowledge your small wins, learn from any setbacks, and remember that the goal is balance, not punishment. (ANI) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

JUSTICE AND LOVE: A FACADE
They say justice is divine, But where is justice, ask we all in line?
The mighty buy their way, Facts twisted to suit their day. The poor and innocent pay, Their cries echo, night and day.
They say love is all we need, But love’s reserved for those in wealth and speed.
The affluent get love’s gentle hand, When they need it least, in a
troubled land.
The poor pour out their heart, But love’s reciprocity, they rarely start.
How can we trust, how can we believe?
In justice and love, they deceive. A facade of fairness, a mask of care,
But truth reveals a different tale to share

Rising Anti-Indian Immigrant Sentiments
By Sanchita Bhattacharya
Violent incidents and mass demonstrations targeting Indian immigrants have escalated in 2025, with Australia and Ireland experiencing some of the most severe cases.
Among the most recent mass demonstration incidents, on August 31, 2025, “March for Australia” rallies were held across several cities of Australia, with flyers singling out Indian migrants and invoking the “replacement” theory.
Earlier, on June 21, Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki led a march in Auckland declaring Christianity New Zealand’s “official religion.” He urged followers to tear a Buddhist flag and accused Sikhs of dominating businesses and excluding locals.
Specifically, targeted attacks against individuals are also increasing in frequency.
On September 1, an Indian-origin man was shoved while attempting to speak at an antiimmigration “March for Australia” rally in Sydney, Australia. The rallies drew nearly 8,000 participants.
On August 31, an Indian international student was assaulted by three women who spat on her, poured beer over her, and shouted racial slurs in Melbourne, Australia. These incidents, amplified by viral video circulation, underscore a climate of heightened xenophobia.
Ireland has reported a comparable surge in racially motivated violence.
On August 4, a six-year-old Indian girl was attacked in a County Waterford housing estate.
On August 1, Lakhvir Singh, a 40-year-old Indian-origin taxi driver who has lived in Ireland for over 23 years, was assaulted in the Ballymun area of north Dublin.
These incidents included stabbings, robberies, and gang attacks, prompting serious safety concerns within the Indian community.
The repeated targeting of students, professionals, and even children signal a pattern of racialized hostility that has moved beyond isolated events. India’s Ministry of External Affairs logged 91 violent attacks on Indian students abroad in the past 5 years, with 30 deaths.
Globally, the Indian diaspora – numbering more than 35 million people as of 2024 – is the largest in the world. While communities abroad are widely recognized for their contributions in technology, healthcare, engineering, and entrepreneurship, they also face rising challenges linked to integration and discrimination.
The increasing visibility of Indian immigrants, particularly in high-skilled sectors, has coincided with narratives portraying them as competitors for scarce resources such as housing and jobs.
Moreover, the increasing political mobilization of the Indian Diaspora for causes linked to domestic politics in the home country, the involvements of Indians in organized criminal activities in the host countries, as well as rising incidents of egregious or culturally offensive behaviour, have made Indians unpopular, particularly among the political Right in their countries of residence.
Available data highlights the severity of this trend. Violent attacks on Indians abroad rose from 29 in 2021 to 86 in 2023. Canada reports the highest number of hate-related fatalities, with at least 16 Indians killed over the past five years.
Ireland and Australia have seen surges in racial assaults, while Russia and the UK have reported repeated violent incidents, including fatalities. These figures suggest that Indian immigrants face growing risks across multiple host countries.
Types of Attacks include: Train assaults, rally violence and online slurs in Australia; child beatings, stabbings, and bullying in
Public opinion surveys reinforce these tensions. A 2025 Pew Research Center study across 24 countries found that 47 per cent held a favorable view of India while 38 per cent were unfavorable.
Nations such as Kenya, the UK, and Israel expressed strong positive views, but Turkey and Australia recorded majority-negative attitudes. In the United States, views are evenly divided, with older adults and conservatives more favorable. Unfavorable perceptions of India often translate into prejudice against its diaspora communities, deepening their vulnerability to discrimination
Several drivers underpin this escalation. Farright movements and populist rhetoric have increasingly framed Indian immigrants as symbols of unchecked migration, amplifying economic anxieties in countries experiencing housing shortages or labor competition.
In Australia and Canada, newer waves of Indian students have been portrayed as resistant to assimilation, while in Ireland, housing pressures have been explicitly tied to resentment against migrants. Online platforms have further intensified these sentiments, spread racist narratives and creating a hostile climate.
Responses remain fragmented. The Indian government has issued safety advisories and lodged diplomatic protests following individual incidents but has not released a consolidated global statement addressing attacks on its diaspora. Host governments have at times condemned such violence, yet implementation of protective measures remains uneven and underreporting is widespread.
The escalation of racially motivated attacks against Indian immigrants represents a growing policy challenge – one requiring stronger diplomatic engagement, community protection strategies, and coordinated international monitoring.

MUMBAI- Critically acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee was recently asked, “These days, a lot of actors from your era are doing romantic films. Do you also wish to do any kind of romantic role?”
The actor, known for his role in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ responded, “Definitely you can’t imagine me doing a 25-year-old falling in love with a 20-year-old girl. I will personally not touch or take that kind of risk in this life.
But if there is a good script and the role is age-appropriate, why not? Love doesn’t limit itself to age, right?
So, if there is a very fine script which has a romantic story about two middle-aged people, why not.”
Bajpayee also revealed that he enjoys embracing real-life, middle-
class characters, which he feels resonate with the audience. He added that observing everyday people brings authenticity to his roles, making acting a rich and fulfilling experience.
“I enjoy doing these roles, I enjoy playing common people because I relate to them,” he said.
“Each and every character that I read, I feel like I have seen them somewhere – in real life, in a documentary, in my initial days in Mumbai, in the train.”
Recalling his theatre days, the ‘The Family Man’ actor shared an anecdote. “Once I spoke to a director and I said, ‘We can’t be observing all the time, people will eventually beat us up – Why are you looking at me?’”
He made it very easy, he said, “Observation is such a big part of an actor’s personality that even if he is not looking at someone, he is observing. So, make it a part of your personality.”

Why Is Deepika Out Of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Sequel?
MUMBAI- Deepika Padukone has lost another film. This time, it’s the sequel of her superhit film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
On September 18, the makers of the film shared a long note explaining the possible reasons behind her exit. They wrote, “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD.
After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a

Khan released the film on YouTube for ₹100 per view just six weeks after its theatrical run, a decision that drew mixed reactions from the industry. Speaking on the Game Changers podcast, the actor explained his reasoning. He emphasized that his goal was to challenge what he calls a “broken exhibition system” where films are rushed to streaming platforms, undercutting their potential theatrical success.
The actor revealed he walked away from a lucrative ₹125 crore deal
with an OTT platform for ‘Sitaare Zameen Par,’ which would have guaranteed a profit before the film even hit theaters.
To pursue his pay-per-view vision, he even bought back the film from his producing partner who was skeptical of the idea. “If I’m taking a risk, then it should be my alone,” he stated, clarifying that he didn’t want anyone else to bear the burden of his experiment.
The pay-per-view concept isn’t new to Khan. He shared that he first considered the idea in 2011 after the success of ‘3 Idiots’ but was held back by the lack of a smooth payment system. Now, with widespread UPI adoption and You-
Tube’s massive reach of “50-60 crore people,” he believes the time is right.
While YouTube does not release specific viewership numbers for pay-per-view titles, Khan confirmed that the film’s earnings have significantly surpassed expectations. He stated, “It’s still at a nascent stage, but the potential is huge.”Online movie streaming services

partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works”.
A lot has been said in the above statement without explicitly stating everything. The line, “a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more” points to a brewing and consistent pattern in line with the actress’ prior exit from another film. Does this imply that Deepika Padukone lacked commitment, which is why she is no longer part of the film?
‘Kalki 2898 AD’ marks her 2nd exit from a movie after she left ‘Spirit’, set to be helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga with Prabhas in the lead. It was alleged that the actress demanded an 8-hour shift owing to her motherhood, and to take care of her daughter Dua. At the time she drew a lot of support. (IANS)

MUMBAI- Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s film ‘Homebound,’ starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI).
Producer Karan Johar shared his
immense gratitude on Instagram, calling the moment “a ‘pinch me’ moment that I will NEVER forget.” He expressed thanks to the FFI for their belief in the film and its potential to represent Indian cinema on the world stage.
In a separate statement, Johar said he was “deeply honoured and humbled” by the selection, adding that Ghaywan’s “labour of love is sure to find a home in a million hearts across the world.”
Janhvi Kapoor also celebrated the news on her social media, describing the entire journey of the film as “nothing short of a dream.” She expressed her gratitude for being part of a project that felt bigger than individual achievements, and for the opportunity to work with a team she loves and respects.
Director Neeraj Ghaywan echoed these sentiments, stating he was “deeply honored” that his film was chosen to represent India.
He described the film as “rooted in the love for our land and our people,” and said that taking its story
to a global audience is “humbling and a matter of pride.”
Ghaywan has previously described the film as “a deeply personal story about friendship, dignity, and survival,” adding that he hopes it helps audiences see people who are often unseen with empathy.
The film has already garnered international acclaim, receiving a 9-minute standing ovation at the Cannes 2025 Film Festival and winning the second runner-up spot for the International People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
