Down Payment Options Are Unlocking Homeownership For More Americans
Saving for a down payment is one of the biggest barriers to buying a home, but it doesn’t have to be. Not only are down payment assistance programs helping people unlock homeownership, but some mortgage programs make it possible to put down as little as 3%. Here’s what to know:
Navigating
PMI
Contrary to the popular belief that down payments must be 20% or more, the typical homebuyer makes a down payment between 5% and 20%. However, if you make a down payment of less than 20%, you may have to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI). PMI, which protects the lender if you are unable to pay your mortgage, is a monthly fee rolled into your mortgage payment. If it’s required, you’ll only need this insurance until you’ve built up 20% equity in your home.
Securing the Right Loan
There are many types of private and government-sponsored low down payment loan options available. For example, some private lenders have options designed specifically for low- to moderate-income borrowers. Freddie Mac’s Home Possible mortgage provides down payment options as low as 3%, financial flexibility and reduced PMI. Some qualified buyers can even attain this mortgage without a credit score. Likewise, Freddie Mac’s HomeOne loans, meant for
first-time homebuyers and borrowers who need flexible financing, offer similar benefits.
The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) offers down payment options as low as 3.5%. Obtained through lenders but insured by the federal government, they allow lower credit scores than most conventional loans. However, they require PMI and tend to be more expensive.
Looking to build or buy a home in a rural area? The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) two loan types make doing so more affordable for eligible
low- and moderate-income buyers. The Single-Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program has a PMI premium but no down payment, whereas the Single-Family Housing Direct Home Loan Program provides down payment assistance to increase applicants’ repayment ability.
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Loans are made to eligible members of the military community. VA loans may not require a down payment or PMI and have additional features that can make homebuying more affordable for military families.
Speak with your lender to learn more about these loan options.
Finding Assistance
If you’re short on cash for your down payment, help may be available. Many state, county and city governments provide financial assistance for well-qualified people
in their communities ready for homeownership. This help can come in the form of grants, second mortgage loans that come with low or no interest rates and deferred payments, as well as tax credits that free up more of your money for your down payment or closing costs. Having a certain kind of job, such as being a teacher or firefighter, or moving to a specific neighborhood, such as one that has been identified as needing economic growth, could also qualify you for down payment assistance. Your housing counselor or lender can help determine which programs you are eligible for.

Tips To Cut Cleaning Time In Half
Looking for ways to simplify household chores so you can have more time to relax? Here are three strategies to cut the time you spend cleaning in half:
Use Double-Duty Tools
If you’re still using a conventional mop and vacuum, you’re working twice as hard as you need to be. One tool that pulls double-duty is the Tineco iFloor 3 Ultra.
This user-friendly cordless floor washer scrubs clean and vacuums at the same time, leaving sealed hard floors, such as hardwood, vinyl, laminate, linoleum, tile and marble, instantly dry and streakfree. Tineco’s iFloor 3 Ultra may be lightweight, but it features powerful washing and suction, making it a great choice for both everyday cleaning and tackling tough, stuckon messes.
This floor washer was thoughtfully designed with two tanks to keep the clean water and solution separate
from dirty water, so you’re always cleaning the floor with fresh water. And, when the cleaning is complete, you can use the self-cleaning button for a like-new machine with each use.
With up to 25 minutes of runtime and a helpful onboard LED display featuring real-time information about machine functions, including battery level, power status, blockage indicators and more, the floor washer will be ready to clean when you are. Added accessories include
brush rollers, filters and cleaning solutions. Now available both instore and online nationwide at a great price, consider grabbing the Tineco iFloor 3 Ultra on your next run to your local Costco.
Eliminate Clutter
Establishing a “microtidying” habit can save you significant time and energy in the long run. Assign a drop zone bin for each member of the family in a convenient location. Then, encourage everyone to spend
just a few minutes in the evening emptying their bin and returning items to their proper location.
As for paper clutter, it’s all too easy to let countertops and tables get overrun with stacks of mailers, catalogs and documents.
The United States Postal Service reports that over 77 billion pieces of unwanted paper mail are delivered annually. Stop junk mail from piling up in your home with an app like PaperKarma, which makes it easy to unsubscribe from mailing lists.
Then, opt in for paperless communications and bills from your utility companies, credit card, doctor’s offices and more.
As for your existing paperwork, an app like CamScanner or Google Docs can help you quickly batch scan important documents, so you can recycle or shred the physical copies. These tasks will take just a few moments now, but save you
countless time sorting and filing down the line.
Set it and Forget it
Setting up an air purifier, and forgetting it until it’s time to swap out the filter, is not just good for your home’s indoor air quality, it’s actually an underrated cleaning hack.
Air purifiers work to remove indoor pollutants from your air, including pollen, pet dander and dust, before they settle on surfaces, yet only 1 in 4 American homes has one, according to Consumer Reports.
So if dusting doesn’t make the list of your favorite pastimes, consider investing in an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter, the gold standard in particle filtration.
If you’re like most people, you’re busy. Thankfully, tried-and-true strategies along with time-saving tools can cut your to-do list in half and make cleaning a cinch. (StatePoint)
Saving Money While Setting Up A Smart Home
Whether you’re setting up a smart home in new digs this moving season, or simply looking to get better connected, making your home smart doesn’t have to break the bank with these practical ways to get connected and save.
Get Connected
A smart home all starts with fast, hassle-free internet, and these days, there are options available that can help you get connected with no downtime.
Rather than waiting for an installation appointment or technician, solutions like TMobile 5G Home Internet offer easy setup right out of the box. Simply plug it in, power it on and you’re online within minutes.
Now is an especially good time to make this switch, thanks to current promotions. With all T-Mobile Home Internet plans there are no annual contracts or monthly equipment fees.
Additional savings are available when bundling with T-Mobile voice plans, making this a solid choice if you also happen to be shopping for a wireless plan.
Moving into a new home can mean making adjustments to your budget, and unexpected bill increases can make planning difficult.
Unlike some other internet options, T-Mobile doesn’t have introductory promo pricing that increases later, making it easy to account for this line item into the future.
Select plans even come with extras, like sub-
Get Smart
Now that you have internet that can support your smart home, it’s time to select a smart home ecosystem on which to run it, along with devices you’d like to connect it to. Just be sure the ecosystem and devices
you choose are compatible.
The good news? While this technology that adds seamless convenience to your life comes with a price tag, many smart home features can help you save on monthly expenses, offsetting the cost of your new smart home.
For example, devices that make your home more secure, such as smart locks, doorbells, cameras and security systems, could potentially score you a discount on renters or homeowners insurance.
Other devices, such as thermostats, lights and appliances, can be programmed to help reduce energy usage and bills.
Of course, you should be sure to protect all your smart devices from hackers by using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and by keeping systems up to date.
There are endless details to manage when settling into a new residence. Fortunately, setting up internet and smart home technology no longer needs to be stressful.

Taking On The Number One Threat To The Yard Of Your Dreams: Weeds
If you’re a homeowner who takes pride in your lawn, you know how big a headache weeds are.
To help you achieve the yard of your dreams, Exmark has partnered with Jason Creel, the owner of Alabama Lawn Pros, on a new video offering tips and insights into tackling weeds.
“I don’t endorse a simple spray-and-pray strategy. Identifying weeds and understanding their life cycle is essential to using the right product at the right time and in the right amount,” says Creel.
As broken down in the video, here are the major categories of weeds to be aware of:
Grassy weeds, like crab grass and goose grass may look like regular turf grass, but they’re not nearly as uniform.
Broadleaf weeds, like dandelion and clover, stand out with their wide leaves, bright flowers and seed heads.
Sedges, like nutsedge, looks like grass, but instead have a solid, triangular stem without nodes.
Weeds can also be categorized by their life cycles:
Some weeds, like spurge, are annual weeds. They sprout, grow and die in one season.
not as difficult as it might sound,” says Creel.
gether, or to use a combination product to control different types of weeds. In every case, you’ll want to rotate products to prevent resistance and ensure future success.
Of course, overall turf health should also be prioritized. Lawns cut weekly tend to have fewer weeds than lawns cut every other week, and if you let your lawn grow too tall and cut off too much to save time, you risk weakening your yard.
The rule of thumb is not to mow off more than one third of the blade. Remember, healthy yards fight off weeds more effectively, so keeping blades sharp and changing up mowing patterns regularly are essential.
and they come back year after year from that same root clump.
It’s also important to know if you’re dealing with warm or cool season weeds.
Warm season weeds germinate in the spring and die out in the fall and cool season weeds are typically going to germinate in the fall, mature the following spring and die out as the weather gets hot in the summer.
“These varying life cycles is why weed control is a year-round battle. But thankfully, it’s
For most lawns, a preemergent herbicide application in the spring and then again in the fall is the first line of defense, however, the timing shifts every year, so for best results, watch the weather, not the calendar.
If your weeds have already sprouted, that’s where your post-emergent herbicides are going to come in. Whenever spraying any kind of herbicide, wear personal protective equipment and follow the label.
According to Creel, it’s often a good idea to use pre- and post-emergent herbicides to-

“Even with a good plan, weeds are very persistent. Spot-treat them as they appear, and keep your soil healthy, because strong, thick turf is the best natural defense against weeds,” says Creel. (StatePoint)
Help Protect Your Sensitive Data With These Tips
Identity theft is on the rise nationwide. In fact, consumers reported losing more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, representing a 25% increase over the prior year, according to recent data from the Federal Trade Commission.
This trend underscores the importance of taking proactive steps to protect yourself –including properly handling your sensitive documents. The UPS Store network, with its variety of services that help keep your private information private, is offering these tips to help you guard against identity theft:
Shred Documents: Keeping printouts of sensitive documents you no longer need increases your risk of becoming a victim of fraud. When it comes time to destroy confidential information, you need to turn to a retailer you can trust. The shredding services available at any of the 5,400+ The UPS Store lo-
cations nationwide is a far more convenient, secure and time-saving choice compared to home shredding.

ing document destruction vendors, Iron Mountain, which is AAA-certified by the National Association for Information Destruction. While this is an important service year-round, it’s an especially good time to declutter documents, as The UPS Store is offering a 25% off discount for shredding services for a limited time.
Protect Mail: Theft from mailboxes has significantly increased in recent years. Porch pirates stole $12 billion in packages in the past year, with up to 58 million Americans affected, according to Security.org. Beyond packages containing valuable goods, many
thieves specifically target mail containing sensitive information, putting you at risk any time you receive mail from your bank, the IRS, insurance companies or other similar entities.

Time To Switch Up Your Skin Care Regimen For Summer
Summer is all about sunshine, vacations and outdoor adventures, but warmer weather and environmental changes can be harsh on your skin.
Excessive sun exposure, sweating and dehydration can leave your skin feeling less than its best.
Thankfully, with the right skin care essentials, you can maintain glowing, hydrated skin all season long.
Explore top solutions for summer skin care, chosen from Herbacin’s Skin Solutions and Foot Care lines, and discover how they can restore and protect your skin from summer stressors no matter the adventure at herbacinusa.com.
3 Simple Tips For Summer Skin Care
Taking good care of your skin all year long is essential, but even more so in the summer when the power of the sun is at its strongest.
Healthy skin doesn’t require fancy moisturizers or expensive skin care products. You just need to adopt a few healthy habits.
For example, keeping your skin healthy and glowing starts from the inside out by eating and drinking healthy foods and beverages that nourish your body’s largest organ and promote healthy skin cells.
Additionally, studies show certain foods, such as fresh, juicy grapes, may help protect healthy skin even when exposed to UV light, which is known to damage skin cells.
A study published in the journal “Antioxidants,” in which people consumed 2 1/4 cups of grapes every day for two weeks, showed increased resistance to sunburn and reduced markers of UV damage at the cellular level.
This study reinforced previous and similar findings published in the “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.” Grapes are also
a hydrating food with 82% water content; hydration is essential to healthy skin.
Along with snacking on fresh, delicious California grapes, consider these everyday ways you can keep your skin safe from the sun’s rays.
Seek Shade
Most experts recommend avoiding the sun at the height of the day, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when its rays are at full strength. That doesn’t mean you can’t be outside – just seek shade as often as possible while enjoying the warm summer air.
Prioritize Hydration
Drinking water and staying hydrated is important year-round, but especially when it’s hot and you’re more likely to lose water content through sweat.
Keep your body full of moisture with simple and delicious GrapeInfused Waters.
For a zesty kick, try Grape, Ginger and Lime that combines the sweetness of grapes with the zing of gin-
skin more common, leading to clogged pores and dullness.
That’s why a gentle yet powerful exfoliation is crucial with a solution like Gentle Face Scrub, which is formulated with exfoliating jojoba wax particles to remove dead skin cells and cleanse deep into the pores.
Infused with aloe vera, chamomile and marigold, this scrub eliminates impurities while promoting skin regeneration.
Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types and is free from parabens and mineral oils.
ger and lime, or Grape, Lemon and Mint, offering a bright and invigorating blend of citrus and mint. Enter your Zen state with a mellow, spa-like sip from Grape, Cucumber and Mint.
For a cool, hydrating snack, try freezing grapes. Simply rinse, pat dry, remove from the stems and freeze for 2 hours in a single layer on a sheet pan.
You can even enjoy them as flavorful ice cube replacements in these easy-to-prepare, flavorful beverages.
Layer Up
While you’re enjoying the sunshine, layer up with a generous application of 30 SPF or higher sunscreen every 1-2 hours.
Wear lightweight, long-sleeve shirts; wide-brimmed hats; sunglasses; and other protective clothing to reduce sun exposure, which can lead to wrinkles, age spots and other health problems, including an increased risk of skin cancer.

Understanding Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, also called HCM, is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes, sometimes with no warning signs.
It is characterized by the thickening and stiffening of the heart walls, which can impede the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently since the chambers cannot fill up.
In addition, HCM is the most common inherited heart disease, affecting 1 in 500 people in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association.
Because HCM runs in families, first-degree relatives – including parents, siblings and children – should be screened if a family member has been diagnosed.
Consider this information to get a better understanding of this life-altering genetic condition’s symptoms and diagnosis, which can make a crucial difference in managing the disease effectively.
Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms and severity of HCM can vary widely among individuals. While
some people may experience no symptoms at all, common symptoms include fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain and irregular heartbeats, especially during physical activity.
Research shows Black male athletes in highintensity sports like football and basketball
may be at higher risk.
The Importance of Family History in Diagnosis
Because HCM is a genetic condition, family
history is a critical component in its diagnosis. If someone in your family has been diagnosed with HCM, heart failure or cardiac arrest, children, siblings and parents should be screened for HCM.
Genetic testing and echocardiograms are commonly used to catch HCM early. These tests assess the thickness of the heart muscle and observe blood flow, which can indicate the presence of the disease.
There are two main types of HCM – obstructive and nonobstructive – and treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of symptoms.
If HCM runs in your family, don’t wait. Talk to your doctor about screening options and encourage your loved ones to do the same.
Early detection can be lifesaving. To learn more about HCM, visit heart.org/HCMStudentAthlete.

Modi Tells Trump Terror From Pakistan Will Be Treated As War
(Continued From Page 01)
The 35-minute phone call—the first direct exchange between the two leaders since the Pahalgam attack—was held at President Trump’s request, following the cancellation of their planned meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. Trump had returned early to the United States.
Modi briefed Trump on India’s “measured, precise, and non-escalatory” strikes conducted during the night of May 6-7.
He stressed that Indian forces had targeted only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, avoiding civilian or military escalation.
Following the strikes, Modi said, Pakistan initiated contact requesting a ceasefire. India agreed, but Modi was emphatic that the decision was made solely through bilateral military channels, with no involvement of third parties.
“There was no discussion of India-U.S. trade
talks or any third-party mediation,” Misri said, underlining India’s unwavering position.
“India has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept outside mediation on matters concerning Pakistan. This view enjoys complete political consensus in the country.”
According to Misri, Trump acknowledged and supported India’s stance against terrorism.
During the call, Trump invited Modi to Washington following his visit to Canada. Modi declined due to prior commitments but extended an invitation for Trump to attend the next QUAD summit in India—an offer Trump accepted.
The leaders also discussed broader global issues, including the Iran-Israel tensions and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Both agreed that direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv remain essential to ending the war. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

After Dry Spell, India’s Sugar Industry Poised For Sweet Surplus
India- West News Desk
NEW DELHI — After two difficult years marked by drought and export restrictions, India’s sugar sector is gearing up for a strong comeback.
Thanks to abundant rainfall across key growing regions, sugarcane cultivation has rebounded sharply, setting the stage for surplus sugar production for at least the next two years.
Farmers, especially in Maharashtra and Karnataka, have expanded planting areas, buoyed by rains that far exceeded normal levels this May — 1,007% above average in Maharashtra and 234% in Karnataka.
The result: India’s sugar output is projected to surge in the 2025/26 season, with gross production expected to climb nearly 20% yearon-year to 35 million metric tons, according to estimates from the National Federation of Coop-
erative Sugar Factories. That’s a marked turnaround from recent seasons, when erratic weather curtailed yields and forced the government to clamp down on exports.
India, the world’s second-largest sugar producer, was also its second-largest exporter until recently,
shipping an average of 6.8 million tons annually between 2017 and 2023.
But that position slipped after a drought in 2023 cut into sugarcane planting and prompted a complete export ban in 2023/24.
In the current 2024/25 marketing year, only 1 million tons are allowed for export — a fraction of previous levels — as production fell below domestic consumption for the first time in eight years.
With a favorable monsoon and rising acreage, India could soon reclaim its position as a top global supplier. (with Reuters inputs) (Courtesy: https:// indiawest.com/)
1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic
1 teaspoon salt
white pepper, to taste
1 cup Florida Orange Juice
1 cup lemon-lime soda
2 pounds chicken tenders
8 wooden skewers
To make marinade: In medium mixing bowl, combine orange zest; lime zest; thyme; oil; garlic; salt; white pepper, to taste; orange juice; and soda.
Add chicken and completely coat with marinade. Cover bowl and place in refrigerator at least 1 hour.
Soak wooden skewers in water 2030 minutes.
To make kebabs: Remove chicken from fridge and lace through each skewer using weaving motion. Repeat for all chicken tenders and set aside.
When skewers are prepared, drizzle extra marinade over chicken.
Heat grill to medium. Place chicken on grill. Cover and cook 3 minutes per side, or until center of meat reaches internal temperature of 170 F.
Remove from grill and serve immediately, or cover with foil and serve later.
Tips: Cover kebabs with foil for at least 20 minutes after cooking to trap in flavor and juices.
Add vegetables to kebabs, if desired, to increase flavor.

Why Pregnant Women Should Receive This Very Important Test
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can spread to a fetus during pregnancy or a newborn during labor.
When this happens, it is known as congenital syphilis and can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death or medical issues for the baby, including deafness, blindness, bone deformities and meningitis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, congenital syphilis has tripled in recent years, with more than 3,800 cases reported nationwide in 2023 alone. This is the highest number reported in one year since 1994.
“While serious, congenital syphi-
lis is preventable through timely screenings before and during pregnancy,” says Margaret Ikeda, MD, MS, FAAP, board-certified pe-
diatrician, Yale University School of Medicine, and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Infectious Dis-
eases.
To help pregnant women protect their babies, the AAP is sharing some vital information:
Steps to Take During Pregnancy: Testing and treatment can help protect your baby.
The AAP recommends all pregnant women be tested for syphilis during early pregnancy and that highrisk pregnant women be tested again during the third trimester and at delivery.
If you are diagnosed with syphilis, it is important to receive treatment right away.
How To Spot Financial Misinformation On Social Media
Thanks to content being delivered nonstop over social media channels such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, financial advice is more accessible than ever before. The bad news? Much of it can be misinformation.
According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, here are some red flags to watch out for, so you can stay on track with your goals:
Lack of qualifications: Someone simply calling themself an expert does not make it so. Look for credentials such as CFP® certification to indicate that the social media influencer has formal financial planning education and experience.
Guaranteed returns: Offers that sound too good to be true typically are. Be wary of “no risk, high reward” claims.
Pressure: Applying pressure on viewers to act fast could be a sign that you’re watching a scam artist. CFP® professionals can work with you to plan years and even decades ahead, on goals such as retirement or buying a home. Financial planning can take time.
Sensational language: Is a financial influencer, or “finfluencer,” dis-
missing traditional retirement accounts as obsolete? Advising that you tie up all your assets in real estate?
Be suspicious of bold claims challenging prevailing financial wisdom. It’s important to remember that many influencers operate with one goal in mind: getting views, likes, comments and reshares. While such content is entertaining, it doesn’t necessarily constitute sound financial advice.
Paid promotions: If the influencer is touting a specific solution or product, it could be a sign they are being paid to do so. Financial advice should be delivered with your
Anecdotal evidence: Every financial situation is unique, so use caution before following advice based
on someone’s personal experience. What worked for the content creator may not work for you.
Of course, knowledgeable financial influencers can exist. While social media has the power to help consumers, there is a lot of distracting background noise out there. Before acting on advice from social media, always pause to consider how it aligns with your longterm financial goals. (StatePoint)

This should be followed by repeat blood tests to make sure the treatment worked. Since you can be infected at any time during pregnancy, your doctor may do the test more than once.
Steps to Take After Birth: Newborn babies can also be tested and treated for congenital syphilis. As soon as infection is detected, babies should be treated with antibiotics.
After the first treatment, babies will have repeated blood tests over several months to make sure the infection is gone, and occasionally, will need to be treated again.
Signs and Symptoms to be Aware of: The first stage of acquired syphilis can appear as a painless sore on the genitals a few weeks after exposure, however it often goes unnoticed. Unless treated, the infection can spread throughout the body.
Symptoms at this stage can include skin rash, swollen glands, fever, headache, joint aches and fatigue, and can last for months or even come back later if not treated.
However, it’s important to understand that you can be infected with syphilis but not feel sick or have any symptoms at all, which is still dangerous for the baby. That’s one reason why testing is so important.
Resources to Lean on: The AAP offers comprehensive resources to help ensure pregnant women get needed testing and treatment for themselves and their newborns. Visit https://www.aap.org/congenitalsyphillis to learn more.
“The best thing you can do to protect your baby is to have syphilis blood testing as soon as you discover you are pregnant and throughout pregnancy.
If you are diagnosed with the infection, get treatment as soon as possible,” says Yarlini Vipulanandan, MD, Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellow at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and postresidency training member of the AAP. (StatePoint)

Make Fire Safety A Priority This National Homeowners Month
Home fires today are burning hotter and faster and causing more damage than ever before, according to National Fire Protection Association data. This is why every second counts when it comes to a fire emergency.
June is National Homeowners Month, which is a great opportunity to evaluate your home safety devices and make upgrades where necessary.
A new partnership between Kidde, a trusted leader in fire safety for more than 100 years, and Ring, has delivered a cutting-edge collection of Smart Smoke and Combination Alarms (Smoke + CO) featuring seamless integration into the Ring app.
Combining Kidde’s advanced smoke and carbon monoxide sensors that provide quicker, more accurate alerts (29% faster average
smoke detection based on internal testing of smoldering wood fires for Kidde 9th Edition vs. leading competitor 8th Edition products) with built-in smart technology, you can better protect your home from anywhere.
Whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation, you’ll receive instant notifications through the Ring app if unsafe levels of smoke or carbon monoxide are detected, allowing you to take immediate action.
Ring also offers an optional 24/7 Smoke & CO Monitoring subscription service ($5/month), where trained agents can request emergency help and alert your emergency contacts in the event of an alarm.
“We believe these alarms represent a major step forward in whole home safety, and we’re excited to get them into the hands of consumers,” says Isis Wu, president of Global Residential Fire & Safety at Kidde.
Additional features can ensure smooth operation of your home safety equipment.
For example, the Ring app notifies you when your devices’ batteries are low approximately seven days prior to the device chirping, so you can ensure operation with no down time.
And Kidde’s enhanced sensing technology reduces false alarms often caused by cooking—a leading reason people disable their devices.
And it doesn’t stop there. Once you
install one of these smart alarms in your home, you can receive real-time alerts from your other eligible hardwired Kidde products to create a connected home that helps keep you and your family safe.
Remember, having working smoke alarms in the home can double the likelihood of safely escaping a house fire in the event of an emergency and are there to help protect you round-the-clock.
That’s why it’s important to install them throughout the house, including the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, hallways, basement and garage.
As an additional safety measure, you should also be prepared to tackle small fires quickly. Keep fire extinguishers in key areas, including the kitchen, basement and garage.
These new alarms are available now, exclusively at The Home Depot, and will be rolling out to other retailers later this year.
To learn more about the intersection of home safety equipment and smart technology, as well as to find fire and CO safety tips, visit kidde. com.
“Humans are flawed. We forget things, we mess up, and we assume a home fire and other emergencies will never happen to us,” says Wu.
“Unfortunately, no home is impervious to an emergency, making the proper safety precautions essential for every household.” (StatePoint)
What To Do During Times Of Economic Uncertainty
From layoffs in the federal government to a growing number of companies handing tasks off to artificial intelligence, today’s rapidly shifting job market is rightfully stoking concerns for many Americans.
On top of that, the overall economic climate has lately been affected by market volatility, tariffs and inflation.
According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, you can face times of economic insecurity head-on with a plan.
Job Insecurity
If you have recently lost your job, or are concerned you might, here are steps you can take now:
Get the picture: Take an inventory of your full financial picture, including income, average monthly expenses and assets. Understanding how much it costs you to live, minus discretionary spending, can give you an idea of how long you can survive on your liquid assets.
This is also a good time to consider what spending you can cut back on and, if possible, how to build your emergency fund.
Act wisely: Whether you’re a federal employee with a Thrift Savings Plan or you work in the private sector and have an employer-sponsored retirement plan, it’s important to act with caution, not fear.

About Renovating?
Check With Your Building Department First
From updating an outdated kitchen to adding a home office, home renovations can be exciting.
Before you dive in, it’s critical to understand the local safety requirements that impact your projects.
The International Code Council’s annual Building Safety Month campaign raises awareness about the role that building codes play in keeping us all safe and the important work done by building safety professionals, including those in your local building department.
Kevin McOsker, the Code Council’s vice president of Technical Resources, offers advice to help you renovate safely:
First, Meet With Your Local Building Department
Before beginning any home improvement project, you’ll want to meet with your local building department.
They can walk you through the local building codes as well as the process for obtaining permits and inspections.
Failing to meet the requirements outlined in the code can result in unsafe living conditions, failed inspections or costly rework.
To contact your local building department, start with your city or
county’s official website and look for the building or planning department. You can also call your city hall or visit in person.
Remember, building departments want to help make your project a success.
Some building departments even have approved details and drawings to assist you with simple permits, construction and inspections.
When reaching out, ask:
• Do I need a permit for this type of work?
• How much does the permit cost?
• Are there specific code requirements in my area?
• How do I schedule inspections and when should they happen?
Next, Secure a Permit and Inspection
A building permit is an official approval that allows you to proceed with a renovation or construction project.

and having the right tools on hand can help safeguard the home,” Haugh says.
“While many households have traditional duct tape, waterproof and repair tape, such as T-Rex Waterproof and Repair Tape, is ideal for durable, post-storm repairs since it’s specifically designed to adhere to wet or uneven surfaces until permanent repairs can be made.”
(42%), clogged gutters (32%), and structural issues from debris (28%). Water leaks also frequently occur inside the home and affect a sizable number of homeowners (30%).
Haugh suggests that preventative maintenance is one of the most effective ways to reduce emergency damage.
“Homeowners should regularly check roofs and siding for any signs of wear and ensure sump pumps and other plumbing fixtures are working and free of clogs,” she explains.
“It’s also important to clean out gutters to ensure water flow and prevent backup that can cause problems.”
Fill Your Toolbox
In urgent situations, some homeowners reported resorting to improvised, unreliable solutions like towels (39%), clothing (18%) or even newspapers (15%) to plug leaks.
It’s crucial to keep essential emergency repair supplies on hand in one easily accessible location.
A standard toolkit should include useful items, such as hammers, nails, tarps, sealant and strong waterproof repair tape specifically designed to hold up under tough conditions.
“Extreme weather is inevitable,
Formulated with Flex-to-Fit Technology, which uses a highly conformable UV acrylic adhesive that is repositionable, T-Rex Waterproof and Repair Tape instantly seals out water, air and moisture -- even under water.
Plus, it stands up in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees F to 240 degrees F, providing all weather durability.
Make Quick, Post-Storm Repairs
Once it’s safe to go outside, homeowners should assess any risks and utilize items in their toolkit to help prevent damage in and outside the home, looking for any interior or exterior issues or leaks that could cause damage if not addressed.
Haugh suggests using those key toolbox items as an effective temporary solution.
“Most individuals expect a temporary repair to last a few hours to a few days, but more than 65% of homeowners were surprised by the strength and durability of products like waterproof tape when addressing storm-related leaks,” she states.
“We’ve learned waterproof and repair tape should be included among other DIY repair staples, like a hammer and nails.”

Every Young Adult Needs A Financial BFF
If you’re like many young adults, you’re turning to social media and online influencers for money advice.
According to Experian research, Gen Z and millennials are not going to financial organizations for information or to shop for financial services as a first step.
Among those surveyed ages 1844, the go-to source of information is an internet search, while only about 30% of respondents overall go to a financial services company.
Industry experts say that you should be cautious about information found on these channels.
“Learning good financial habits early can set you up for long-term success.
It all starts with the right knowledge from trustworthy sources,” says Rod Griffin, senior director of Consumer Education and Advocacy for Experian.
No longer just for credit information, Experian now offers many other tools and features that can help you improve your entire financial life every day.
Like a supportive friend, Experian aims to be your BFF -- in this case, your Big Financial Friend -- who you can lean on to improve many facets of your financial life.
Now, the company is sharing these financial tips with young adults:
Start building credit: Credit is a powerful tool that can help open doors, from renting an apartment to buying a car or even landing a job.
The key is to use it intentionally. First, consider opening a secured card or credit card and use it for small, manageable purchases like gas or groceries.
Then, pay it off in full each month. This helps you build a strong credit history and shows lenders you’re a responsible borrower.
If you’ve never had a credit card or
loan before, you might not have a credit report yet.
At Experian, you can establish an Experian credit report with no history and start building a credit profile right away.
Check in on your credit report and credit score: Reviewing your credit reports and credit scores regularly is one of the smartest habits you can have.
Stick to a budget: Budgets are not about restriction.
They’re about giving you the ability to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary debt and reach financial goals.
You don’t need anything fancy to get started. Use a budgeting app, spreadsheet, or even a notebook to track spending and adjust as needed.
Face student loans head-on: Log into your loan servicer’s website to review your balances, interest rates and repayment terms.
Missing payments can hurt your credit scores and lead to long-term financial stress, so make it a priority to pay on time, every time.
When possible, pay more than the minimum to reduce the total interest you pay over time, and become debt-free faster.
Think ahead: It might feel early to
think about retirement or homeownership, but small steps now can make a big difference later.
Begin by setting up a savings account, emergency fund, or retirement or brokerage account.
Contribute what you can, even if it’s just a little each month, to prepare for the unexpected and get on track for long-term success.
Don’t leave free money on the table: When you secure your first post-grad job, take advantage of employee benefits, like 401(k) matching, a health
savings account and student loan repayment benefits, to maximize your finances.
Go to trusted sources: Whether you’re just starting out or looking to build a stronger financial foundation, Experian offers tools, education and products designed to help you take control of your financial future. To access these resources, visit experian.com.
“Everyone can benefit from accessing credible financial information, especially young adults just starting to manage their money.
Getting educated and using trusted sources will help you make informed financial decisions,” says Griffin. (StatePoint)
Thinking About Renovating? Check
With Your Building Department First

Permits are crucial because they ensure your project is safe and in compliance with local building codes and regulations.
These regulations are designed to keep you safe from hazards inside the building as well as protect you from extreme weather events.
Skipping the permit process can lead to additional fees, stop-work orders or even complications when selling your home.
In some jurisdictions, it may even be a misdemeanor offense that could carry significant fines.
Once you’ve secured a building permit, you’ll need an inspection. Building inspections are an official review of your renovation at key milestones during the construction process.
They’re conducted by a certified professional to confirm that the work being done complies with local building code requirements.
Common Home Renovation Mistakes
• Skipping Permits to Save Time or Costs: Skipping permits often leads to greater expenses later if youre fined, assessed additional fees or could even require you to redo completed construction work at your expense.
• Assuming Minor Changes Don’t Require Approval: Even small updates can greatly impact safety and need permits and inspections.
• Hiring Unlicensed Contractors: They may not follow the code, have no license to perform the work and usually do not carry any insurance, which puts your project and your home at risk.
Licensed contractors are accountable to the licensing board, just like your doctor.
• Failing to Schedule Necessary Inspections: Without a final sign-off, your project may be considered incomplete, non-compliant or worse – create an unsafe condition.
Use Building Safety Professionals as a Resource
By working with your local building department, you can ensure your project meets standards, avoids legal issues and creates a safe space for everyone in your home. (StatePoint)
Your Home Safety Checklist: Simple Steps To Keep A Safer, Happier Space
Your home is more than just a place to live, it’s where you create memories, unwind and feel most comfortable. Yet, many household items and systems can hide potential safety risks.
“The good news is that by identifying and addressing potential hazards early, you can create a safer space for your family,” says Christine Reed, Fire and Disaster Mitigation program manager at the International Code Council.
As part of the recent International Code Council’s Building Safety Month campaign, Reed is sharing basic tips for at-home electrical safety, fire safety and more.
Electrical Safety
1. Manage Power Strips and Extension Cords
Proper use of power strips and extension cords is essential. Avoid overloading and make sure cords are never hidden under rugs or furniture.
To keep electronics safe from electrical surges and help prevent potential fires, utilize power strips with built-in surge protection that will trip if overloaded.
2. Inspect Electrical Cords
Inspect electrical cords for fraying, cracking insulation or wire damage to prevent future issues. Replace worn-out cords right away.
3. Modernize Wiring
If your home is 30 or more years old, have the wiring evaluated or updated by a licensed electrician. Modernizing your electrical system can increase safety, reduce energy costs and prevent potential hazards.
Fire Safety
1. Keep Escape Routes Clear
Having clear escape routes and an action plan are critical. Ensure that evacuation pathways, like hallways and in front of windows, are
free from obstructions.
Practice periodic fire drills so everyone knows exactly what to do and where to meet.
2. Reduce Clutter
Keeping combustible items, such as paper, towels and other clutter, away from heat sources like stoves, space heaters and fireplaces can significantly reduce the chance of an accidental fire igniting.
3. Maintain Smoke Alarms and Fire Extinguishers
Smoke alarms save lives. Test them monthly and replace the batteries semi-annually or replace any smoke alarm equipped with a builtin 10-year battery after the 10-year timespan has passed.
Store your fire extinguisher close by, but not immediately next to, heat sources like stoves and water heaters, and keep the extinguisher’s periodic service tag current.
4. Use Lithium-Ion Batteries Properly
Lithium-ion batteries, common in portable devices, should be handled with care.
Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging, storing and disposing of these batteries, including using the charging cord that comes with the device. While charging, keep the device out of evacuation paths.
Proactive Maintenance
1. Address Aging Plumbing
Small leaks can quickly become big problems, leading to water damage and mold.
By checking your plumbing pipes and fixtures regularly and addressing leaks right away, you can avoid major health risks and costs, and ensure your water systems are running efficiently.
2. Maintain Water Heater Systems
Water heaters are often overlooked, but keeping them updated can save you time and money. Flushing your water heater annually removes sediment buildup, helping it run more efficiently and prolonging its lifespan.
3. Prevent Mold Growth and Promote Clean Air
By maintaining proper ventilation in damp areas like bathrooms and basements, you can prevent mold growth and improve your home’s air quality.
Use dehumidifiers or exhaust fans where needed and keep an eye out for dark spots or musty smells.
Backyard Safety
1. Keep Pool Area Secure
Install a fence around the pool with a self-locking gate and safely store pool chemicals out of children’s reach. Always supervise swimmers to ensure their safety and your peace of mind.
2. Ensure Safe Outdoor Equipment
Outdoor play equipment, grills and yard tools should be checked regularly to maintain safe use.
Ensure play structures are stable and free from sharp edges or rust, and keep tools securely stored to
avoid accidental injury. Keep grills clean of grease buildup to reduce flare-ups.

safety tips, as well as tips for disaster preparedness and sustainability, visit iccsafe. org.
“Homes and buildings that have been updated to the latest building codes are better equipped to minimize the possibility and mitigate the effects of fire and other risks.
Simple, proactive actions can help ensure continued safety and happiness of your family,” says Reed. (StatePoint)
India, Canada Will Try To Reset Ties At G7 Summit
NEW DELHI (IANS)– India and Canada are set to explore pathways for resetting their relationship at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the invitation from his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, signaling a mutual desire to move past recent diplomatic strains.
The summit, hosted by Canada from June 15 to 17, will provide a crucial opportunity for the leaders to discuss bilateral and global issues.
Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed, stating it was an occasion for both Prime Ministers to reflect on and advance India-Canada relations.
Relations between India and Canada faced challenges in 2023 following charges made by Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, against New Delhi. India has consistently expressed concern over Canada’s alleged tolerance of extremism and inaction against attacks on its diplomats.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed his positive outlook on X, stating, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada… As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

If you lose your job and take a full distribution from your retirement account, that full distribution can come with tax penalties and leave you ill-prepared for the future.
Instead, if you suffer a job loss, consider leaving your retirement accounts untouched or rolling them over into an IRA.
Federal employees should also reach out to the Office of Personnel Management or their specific agency to learn what benefits they’re eligible for.

No Credit, Modi Told Him But Trump Digs In, Wants To Be Cast As Peacemaker
India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – Just hours after a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former U.S. President Donald Trump once again declared that he had personally “stopped the war” between India and Pakistan—this time before going into a meeting with Pakistan’s army chief at the White House.
The June 18 phone conversation, lasting 35 minutes, was the first direct exchange between Modi and Trump in months.
The two leaders had originally planned to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, but that meeting was canceled due to Trump’s early departure. The call was held at Trump’s request.
Following the conversation, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed reporters, offering a starkly different account of events.
According to Misri, Modi made it clear during the call that India’s decision to halt its military operations was a direct response to a ceasefire request from Pakistan, conveyed through established military channels.
At no point, Misri emphasized, was there any discussion of U.S. involvement or mediation.
“There was no proposal for mediation, not even at the lowest levels,” Misri stated.
“Prime Minister Modi firmly reiterated that India has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept third-party mediation on matters concerning Pakistan.”
But that clarity from Modi didn’t stop Trump from going public with his version of events.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting with Pakistan’s powerful army chief General Asim Munir, Trump boasted: “Well, I stopped the war between Pakistan—I love Pakistan—I think Modi is a fantastic man.
I spoke to him last night… and I stopped the war between Pakistan and India.”
He credited both Munir and Modi as “extremely influential in stopping it,” pointing out that both countries are nuclear powers.
Trump also voiced frustration with how the episode was being covered in the media.
“I don’t think I had one story written,” he complained.
“I stopped a war between two major nations, major nuclear nations. I did not have a story written about it.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
How Apartment Renters Can Cut Energy Costs And Save Big
With economic uncertainty and soaring housing prices putting homeownership out of reach for many Americans, apartment living is on the rise.
But if you’re a first-time renter, one oftenoverlooked aspect of apartment life may come as a surprise: the energy bill.
While you may expect to pay for electricity or gas usage inside your unit, you might not realize you could also be footing the bill for energy used elsewhere in the building.
“In apartment complexes, your energy costs may also include a share of the cost of heating and cooling common spaces, such as lobbies, hallways, fitness centers and recreational rooms,” said Timothy J. Harper, president and CEO of Nationwide Energy Partners, a Columbus-based company that specializes in energy management for multi-family communities.
“You might not always be aware of it because it’s sometimes baked into your rent or utility bill and not called out separately.”
Harper advises that whether you’re apartment hunting or already settled in, it’s wise to ask a few key questions: Are utilities individually metered?
Do you pay the energy provider directly or is it bundled into your rent? Does your building use a third-party service that also offers tools to monitor and reduce your usage?
“These details can help you understand what’s driving your energy costs,” Harper said. “Because after rent, utilities are typically your next biggest expense.”
While as a renter you may not have the authority to install new appliances or upgrade insulation, there are several simple strategies that can make a noticeable difference in monthly bills:

The event drew a large crowd, including members of the Indian diaspora and local American residents, all gathered to celebrate India’s ancient tradition.
India’s Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra, addressed the participants, calling the morning “a wonderful experience” and “a fun-filled celebration of India’s ancient civilizational heritage in the form of yoga.”
He added, “A large number of extended Indian families and members of the diaspora are present with us, along with other citizens of the U.S. I want to thank everyone for being here this morning to celebrate this gift from India.”
The session was led by Acharya Govind Brahmachari, a yoga and meditation instructor, who reminded participants that yoga is not just about physical movement.
Adjust the Thermostat: If your unit allows it, slightly adjusting your thermostat – lower in winter, higher in summer – can significantly cut energy use.
Portable fans or space heaters can sometimes be more efficient than relying solely on central systems, as long as they’re used safely.
Seal the Leaks: Older units can suffer from drafty windows and doors. Removable weather stripping and draft stoppers – available at most hardware stores – can provide inexpensive insulation and reduce heating or cooling loss.
Use Curtains Wisely: Blackout or thermal curtains can help regulate indoor temperature.
Keep them closed on hot days to block out sun and open them during winter daylight hours to naturally warm your space.

“Yoga postures are only one part of a much deeper system designed to free the mind and help us experience oneness with the universe,” he said.
“The goal is emotional balance and inner freedom.”
Adding to the spiritual context, Acharya Madhuvartanand Avdhut of the Ananda Marga Yoga and Meditation Centre spoke about the roots of yoga, citing Lord Shiva as the first yogi some 7,000 years ago. He emphasized yoga’s threefold path— Asana (postures), Darshan (philosophy), and Sadhana (practice)—as a holistic approach to individual well-being and global harmony.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscores the vital connection between human and planetary health. It reflects India’s age-old belief in “Sarve Santu Niramaya”—“May all be free from disease.”

Austin Hosts U.S. Premiere Of Tanvi The Great, Directed By Anupam Kher, To Support Education For Underserved Students
By staff reporter
Austin, TX — June 22, 2025 — HC4A successfully hosted the Austin premiere of Tanvi The Great, a powerful new film directed by acclaimed actor and filmmaker Anupam Kher, at Galaxy Theatres on Saturday, June 21.
The event combined the glitz of a red-carpet premiere with the heart of a meaningful philanthropic cause — raising awareness and funds for education access for underprivileged students in the U.S.
Inspired by Kher’s real-life niece, Tanvi The Great tells the poignant story of a young woman on the autism spectrum who sets out to honor her late father’s dream of saluting the Indian flag at Siachen Glacier. The film highlights courage, selfbelief, and inclusion—values that align closely with HC4A’s mission of bridging income disparities through education.
The event featured:
● A red carpet welcome and reception for guests and dignitaries
● A meet-and-greet with Anupam Kher
● The official screening of Tanvi The Great
● A live Q&A session with the director Anupam Kher and lead actress, Shubhangi Dutt
● An exclusive fundraising dinner, where donors and supporters connected personally with the filmmaker
The audience response was deeply emotional and overwhelmingly positive.
“With an inspiring performance
from the lead actress Shubhangi Dutt, director Anupam Kher accomplished a rare feat in delivering a dual message around service to our country while reminding us that while we are all different, we are no less,” said Ashish Gupta, an investor and entrepreneur.
“Tanvi The Great is a spellbinding story that reveals the complexity of family duty and reminds us that every young person has a gift to offer the world if we as a society let them.
You will laugh heartily, wipe a tear, hold your breath in suspense,
and swell with pride during this triumphant film,” added Arati Singh, AtLarge Trustee & Former Board President, Austin ISD.
“My huge compliments to HC4A and Alok Singh for putting up a very enjoyable evening with Anupam Kher and the leading actress of the movie.
We just see the success of stars but sometimes don’t know the struggles on the way they overcame,” shared Jaya Thakkar, a philanthropist.
This landmark event was more than just a movie premiere — it was a momentous occasion for Austin, bringing the community together to celebrate the power of storytelling, inclusion, and education.
Hosting such an inspiring event with the legendary Anupam Kher was a rare honor for the city and a proud moment for HC4A, stated Alok Singh, President of HC4A Board.
The proceeds from the Austin gala will support HC4A’s scholarship program, benefiting students for vocational training. The premiere drew attendees from across Texas, including corporate executives, business leaders, educators, and nonprofit advocates.
Tanvi The Great, which previously premiered at Cannes and in New York and London, is set for its theatrical release in India on July 18, 2025.
This landmark event underscores HC4A’s commitment to using arts and storytelling as a vehicle for social impact—shining a spotlight on both the need for equity in education and the boundless potential of every student, regardless of background or ability.

How Apartment Renters Can Cut Energy Costs And Save Big
plugs allow you to cut electricity to devices like TVs, chargers and game consoles when they’re not in use.
Switch to LED Lighting: Energyefficient LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent
bulbs. They’re an easy upgrade with long-term savings.
Adopt Smart Appliance Habits: Run laundry machines during offpeak hours, typically late at night or early morning, if your building uses time-of-use pricing.
Also, avoid overcrowding your refrigerator, which can reduce airflow and force it to use more energy.
Ask About Energy Audits: Some apartment communities offer energy audits that identify inefficiencies throughout the building that can be addressed to reduce waste, or third-party reports that provide historical data on average energy usage and cost by unit so people
shopping for, or living in, those units know what’s typical.
“The key to saving on your apartment energy bill is understanding how your specific building operates and making small changes to optimize your personal energy use,” Harper said.

By staying informed and adopting energy-smart habits, you can stay comfortable in your rental unit without letting energy bills spiral out of control – an important step toward financial peace of mind in an increasingly pricey rental market. (StatePoint)
Pataudi Name Almost Erased—Tendulkar’s Calls Brought It Back
NEW DELHI (IANS)- Sachin Tendulkar expressed satisfaction at ensuring the Pataudi family’s legacy remains a part of the IndiaEngland cricket rivalry.
This will be through a newly introduced medal for the winning captain of the Test series, which is now contested for the AndersonTendulkar Trophy.
The ECB’s initial decision to rename the erstwhile Pataudi Trophy after Tendulkar and James Anderson had drawn criticism.
However, Tendulkar revealed he reached out to the ECB, BCCI, and ICC Chairman Jay Shah to ensure the Pataudi name would remain connected to India-England cricket.
As a result, it was unveiled on June 19 that a “Pataudi Medal” will be
presented to the winning captain of each Test series between the two teams.
“When the Pataudi Trophy was retired, I was travelling, I think in Spain or somewhere, and I heard
about it,” Tendulkar recounted in a select virtual interaction with IANS, ahead of the first Test starting in Leeds on June 20.
“The decision was taken by the ECB and BCCI to retire and start a new trophy altogether.
So, the new trophy, the first time I got to know about it was, I think, just some time ago, last month, when ECB and BCCI decided to name this trophy after both of us.”
“It’s a nice recognition, I thought, of our contributions to our respective nations in Test cricket.
At the same time, I picked up the phone, and my first phone call was to the Pataudi family.
I spoke to them and also discussed about keeping the legacy alive.
US Resumes Student Visas With Mandatory Social Media Screening
WASHINGTON,
DC (IANS) –
The US Department of State has announced that it will resume processing of the visa applications for foreign students with a condition that requires applicants to make their social media accounts public for government review.
“Under new guidance, we will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting, including online presence, of all student and exchange visitor applicants in the F, M, and J nonimmigrant classifications.
To facilitate this vetting, all applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas will be instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to ‘public,’” read the statement issued by the US Department of State on Wednesday.
According to the State Department, it is committed to protecting America and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through the visa process, adding that a US visa is a “privilege, not a right”.
“We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to US national security,” it stated
The US State Department asserted that every visa adjudication is a national security decision.
“The United States must be vigilant
during the visa-issuance process to ensure that those applying for admission into the United States do not intend to harm Americans and our national interests and that all applicants credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms for their admission,” the statement added.
It’s important to not forget their contribution to Indian cricket and having inspired so many generations, I think it’s important.”
He continued, “I said, I’ll come back to you on this. I spoke to Mr. Jay Shah (ICC Chairman), BCCI, and ECB, and shared some ideas.
Over some time, and a few phone calls, we unanimously decided that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence should be awarded to the winning captain, because he was known for his leadership, and this would be a good match.”
The Pataudi family’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of cricket between India and England.
Both Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, led the Indian cricket team and also played county cricket in England.
Last month, the US indicated that the pause on student visa interviews would end “sooner than later” and encouraged applicants to continue the application process while frequently checking for the resumption of regular services.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered US missions around the world to pause student visa interviews to incorporate expanded scrutiny of the social media footprints of applicants.
The Trump administration has expanded scrutiny of foreign students in US colleges and universities in the wake of political unrest that swept through campuses against the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The administration has targeted college authorities for not doing enough to prevent and protect Jewish students and foreign students from participating in them. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi holds the unique distinction of being the only cricketer to represent both countries in Tests.
“The outcome of those phone calls and multiple discussions was very, very positive,” Tendulkar concluded.
“It was heartwarming to know that we’ve kept the legacy alive. It is important that it’s remembered in the way it’s meant to be.
I’ve always respected my seniors, and I’ve always valued their contribution to our country, as the foundation was built then.
On that foundation, multiple things have happened over a period of time. Hopefully, what the newer generation constructs will be something that, over a period of time, we’ll look back and be proud of.
So, we cannot forget our heroes, and all in all, it was indeed a positive outcome, to have not just the trophy named after the two of us, but also in knowing that Mr. Pataudi’s legacy is very much alive.”

DGCA Gives Clean Chit To India’s Boeing Fleet
NEW DELHI — India’s top aviation safety authority said on June 17 that a thorough inspection of Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet has not uncovered any serious safety issues, just days after one of the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, killing at least 271 people.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in its official statement, confirmed that “the aircraft and associated maintenance systems were found to be compliant with existing safety standards.”

IIT Madras Climbs Into Global Top 200 World University Rankings
CHENNAI (IANS)– The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has achieved a significant milestone, breaking into the top 200 of the QS World University Rankings 2026.
Securing the 180th position globally, this marks a remarkable ascent of 47 places from its 227th rank last year, solidifying its standing as the third-highest ranked Indian institution on this year’s global list.
IIT Madras attributes this achievement to its robust performance across key metrics, including academic reputation, employer perception, faculty-student ratio, international collaborations, and sustainability initiatives.
IIT Madras now joins two other Indian institutions in the global top
200: IIT Delhi leading the Indian contingent at 123rd globally, and IIT Bombay at 129th.
Beyond the top 200, IIT Kharagpur (215), IISc Bangalore (219), and IIT Kanpur (222) also demonstrated strong performances.
Within Tamil Nadu, Anna University was ranked 465th, while Mumbai University saw a significant rise to the 664th position, largely
due to improved performance in research citations and employment outcomes.
The QS World University Rankings 2026, compiled by global higher education analytics firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluated over 1,500 institutions worldwide.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintained its top global spot for the 13th consecutive year, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford University, University of Oxford, and Harvard University.
Notably, QS also introduced a new, unweighted metric for the first time this year: “International Student Diversity.”
While it does not impact the overall rankings for this edition, this metric aims to encourage inclusivity and better student representation across borders, reflecting a broader focus on equitable global mobility in higher education. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
scrutiny after the June 12 crash in Ahmedabad — one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history.
The doomed flight, a Boeing 7878 Dreamliner en route to London, had 242 people on board. It went down moments after takeoff, striking residential buildings near the airport. Only one passenger survived. Nearly 30 people on the ground also lost their lives.
In the aftermath, the DGCA had ordered an “enhanced safety inspection” of the airline’s 787 fleet. As of June 17, 24 of Air India’s 33 Dreamliners had completed the process.
While the regulator found no systemic safety lapses, it did flag concerns during a high-level review meeting with Air India executives.
According to the DGCA, the airline was advised to strictly comply with regulatory protocols, improve coordination between departments, and ensure adequate spare parts inventory to minimize flight delays and maintenance issues.
A separate inquiry involving aviation experts and Boeing is underway. (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)
British Royals Honor Air India Crash Victims With Black Armbands
LONDON- King Charles III and senior members of the UK royal family wore black armbands during Saturday’s Trooping the Colour ceremony in a solemn tribute to victims of the devastating Air India crash.
The gesture, observed during the annual military parade marking the King’s official birthday, came just two days after a Londonbound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
Of the 242 passengers and crew onboard, only one—a British Indian national—survived.
A minute of silence was held immediately after King Charles completed his inspection of the troops.
The Palace said the King personally requested the addition to the ceremony “as a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning, and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

India’s First Epigraphical Reference To Halley’s Comet
Found In Vijaynagara’s 15th-Century
Copper Plate
The discovery of a June 28, 1456 CE, inscription at the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Srisailam, now in Andhra Pradesh, has revealed India’s first known mention of Halley’s comet on a 15th-century Vijayanagara copper plate inscription.
This fascinating discovery has offered a glimpse into the rich astronomical knowledge of Indians even back then.
The plate documents a land grant made by the Vijayanagara king Mallikarjuna to a scholar of the Vedas.
The interesting part here is that the inscription contains a reference to a brilliant celestial object that is visible in the sky now identified by historians and astronomers as Halley’s comet, which was indeed visible at that time.
Astronomical alignment with Halley’s comet
The inscription date in the Indian calendar is śaka 1378, dhātr āṣāḍha ba. 11, which reads exactly to Monday, June 28, 1456 CE.
According to astronomical data, Halley’s comet was seen visibly and spectacularly during the summer of 1456.
It was one of its historically signifi-
cant apparitions, recorded in various parts of the world, including Europe and Asia.
The 1456 sighting of a comet was especially dramatic, and in some places, it was considered a sign.
This is in line with the timing and the unusual celestial reference within the copper plate, making the connection.
Context and significance
This inscription is now considered the earliest attested epigraphic reference to Halley’s comet in India, since previous references to comets in early Indian texts, e.g., in the ṛigveda, atharvaveda, and bṛhat saṃhitā, are generic and metaphorical and do not point to actual astronomical occurrences.
The inscription is written in the classical Telugu language script, with an inscription in Sanskrit, in the traditional copper plate grant form, which was quite prevalent back then.
Mention of the astronomical phenomenon is made along with details of the grant of land, indicating that the phenomena were deemed important enough to be noted within formal, legal, and religious documents.
This find is a cornerstone achievement in India’s scientific and historical record-keeping.
The 1456 copper plate of the Vijaynagar empire is not only the first known epigraphic mention of Halley’s comet in India but also presents a window of insight into the cosmos, the history of India, and the social and political life of the era.
Apart from suggesting the rich knowledge Indians had, it also suggests that medieval scholars likely tracked cometary cycles more closely than we ever would, hinting at an advanced system of record keeping.
Back in those days, observationbased understanding of astronomy in the Vijayanagara era of India is also visible. (Courtesy: https:// timesofindia.indiatimes.com/)

Smart Swaps And Budget-Friendly Ingredients For
Rising food costs can make healthy eating a challenge for many families.
In fact, a poll conducted by Research!America found about 60% of Americans cite the cost of healthy food as their single biggest barrier to achieving better nutrition.
“Food is deeply rooted to family and community,” said Arlen Vanessa Marin, M.S., R.D., a national volunteer for the American Heart Association.
“Recipes are passed down through generations, but as grocery prices rise, finding creative ways to stretch your budget while maintaining a nutritious diet is key.
Simple swaps – like homemade vinaigrettes instead of sugary bottled dressings, frozen veggies instead of fresh or lentils instead of processed meat – can make a big
difference without sacrificing flavor.”
Consider these simple tips from the experts at the American Heart Association, devoted to changing the future to a world of healthier lives for all, to help you enjoy your favorite meals while keeping both your heart and wallet happy.
Protein Without the Price Tag
If you’re looking to add more protein without overspending, try these affordable, nutrient-packed options:
• Beans and other legumes are protein-packed, high-fiber choices for heart-healthy meals.
Add them to soups, stews or salads, or enjoy them as dips with wholegrain crackers or tortillas. Choose canned, no-salt-added varieties for a quick and healthy option.
• Tofu and tempeh are versatile, plant-based staples that are rich in protein.
Add silken tofu to miso soup, stir-fry firm tofu with garlic for a heart-smart meal or add tempeh to noodle dishes and curries.
• Ground turkey or chicken are leaner, often more affordable alternatives to ground beef.
For a budget-friendly twist, try them in dishes like turkey picadillo or homemade tacos.
Better Grains for Your Heart
White rice is a staple in many diets, but it can spike blood sugar. When refrigerated and reheated, it can increase resistant starch while also raising the risk of harmful bacteria. Consider these ways to keep it heart-smart:
• Brown rice is a fiber-rich alter-
native to white rice that pairs well with almost any dish.
• Quinoa is another protein-rich grain that works in soups, salads and side dishes.
• Barley is used in many Asian soups as a whole-grain swap.
Canned, Dried and Frozen Alternatives
Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to buy everything fresh, especially when fresh food isn’t readily available.
Canned, dried and frozen foods can be just as nutritious and help eliminate costly food waste from spoil-
age as they stay edible longer.
Check nutrition labels for low-sodium, no-salt-added and no-sugaradded options.
• Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at peak ripeness and frozen to lock in nutrients. Use them in stir-fries, soups, smoothies or as quick side dishes.
• Canned tuna is packed with omega-3s, wallet-friendly and easy to mix with salads, sandwiches or in brown rice bowls.

Nominee Paul Kapur Stresses Shared USIndia Goals Against Chinese Dominance
India-West News Desk
WASHINGTON D.C. – President Donald Trump’s nominee for a pivotal diplomatic role in South Asia, Paul Kapur, emphasized the mutual goals shared by the United States and India, particularly in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region free from Chinese dominance.
During his nomination hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on June 10, Kapur also highlighted the importance of increasing trade, enhancing technology sharing, and improving energy access between the two nations.
Kapur, nominated for Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, would oversee U.S. interests across a critical region including India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
If confirmed, he pledged to pursue a security and strategic partnership with India that prioritizes American interests.
He noted his intention to “pursue security cooperation where it is beneficial to the US interest, seeking opportunities for bilateral collaboration in trade and investment.”
“If confirmed, I will work to further advance USIndia relations and put our partnership on course to realise its tremendous promise,” Kapur stated.
He further affirmed a commitment to promoting “long-standing security interests with India, Pakistan through the pursuit of peace and stability and fight against terrorism.”
Kapur, a professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, is recognized for his extensive research on South Asian security and nuclear policy.
He holds a BA from Amherst College and a PhD from the University of Chicago. If confirmed, he would succeed Donald Lu, whose term concluded on January 17. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
Trump’s Lunch With Pak’s General Points To Strategic Recalibration
WASHINGTON, DC – In an unprecedented and politically charged move, President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir for lunch at the White House on June 18, a meeting that underscored Trump’s direct outreach to Pakistan’s military establishment and complicated his ongoing public claims of having prevented a war between India and Pakistan.
The June 18 lunch marked the first known instance of a U.S. president hosting Pakistan’s army chief at the White House without the presence of senior civilian officials — a signal that Trump was engaging directly with the real center of power in Islamabad.
Munir, widely seen as Pakistan’s most powerful figure, discussed a range of issues with Trump, including Iran, Israel, trade, economic development, and cryptocurrency, according to a statement from Pakistan’s military.
Trump, for his part, made no secret of why he hosted Munir: “Reason I had him here, I wanted to thank him for not going into the war, just ending the war,” he told reporters after the meeting, referring to the recent India-Pakistan military standoff.
He praised both Munir and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “This man was extremely influential in stopping it from the Pakistan side, PM Modi from the India side, and others.”
However, just hours earlier, Trump had once
again claimed personal credit for halting the conflict. At around 10 a.m., while speaking to reporters as a massive flagpole was being raised on the White House lawn, he declared, “I got it stopped,” repeating, “I stopped the war between Pakistan and India,” and expressing frustration that he had not been recognized for it.
By 3 p.m., while meeting members of the Juventus Football Club in the Oval Office, he moderated his tone, saying, “I’m so happy there was a deal that two smart people… worked out,” avoiding direct claims of mediation.
India has strongly rejected Trump’s assertion that he played a role in stopping the conflict.
In a phone call the previous night, Prime Minister Modi bluntly told Trump that India had taken “firm action” that compelled Paki-
India’s Population Hits 1.46 Billion As Fertility Rate Drops
(Continued From Page 01) Despite this decline, India’s population is projected to grow further, reaching approximately 1.7 billion before gradually decreasing.
The country’s doubling time—the period required for the population to double—now stands at 79 years, signaling a slower growth rate.
The demographic breakdown shows that 24% of the population is aged 0–14, while 26% falls within the 10–24 age group. People aged 15–64 make up 68%, and those 65 and older comprise 7% of the population.
Life expectancy at birth is estimated at 71 years for men and 74 years for women as of 2025.
India’s shift to lower fertility is attributed to increased access to reproductive healthcare and improved education.
“India has made significant progress in lowering fertility rates—from nearly five children per woman in 1970 to about two today,” said Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative.
“This has led to major reductions in maternal mortality, meaning millions more mothers are alive today, raising children and building communities,” she added.
The eport emphasizes that the real global concern is not population size, but ensuring individuals have the freedom and resources to decide if, when, and how many children to have. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
stan to request a ceasefire.
“Due to India’s firm action, Pakistan was compelled to request a cessation of military operations,” Modi told Trump, according to an official readout from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The statement also reiterated that India “would never agree to any third-party mediation” in its dealings with Pakistan.
Trump’s invitation to Munir signals a departure from previous U.S. administrations, especially Democratic ones, which have traditionally emphasized engagement with civilian leadership in Pakistan.
Trump, by contrast, openly acknowledged the power structure, saying he wanted to thank the general directly for his role in ending hostilities.
During last month’s Operation Sindoor, the Trump camp reportedly shifted its communication from Pakistan’s civilian prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, to Munir, recognizing where decision-making authority resided.
Trump’s meeting with Munir also touched on Iran. Trump noted that Pakistan “knew [Iran] better than most,” and Pakistani sources suggested that Munir had urged Trump to push for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
Pakistan, which currently represents Iranian interests in the U.S., has been vocal in its condemnation of Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, a position at odds with U.S. policy.
According to White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly, Trump hosted Munir after the general publicly suggested Trump should be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for helping avert a nuclear war in South Asia.
While the meeting may signal a warming of ties between the U.S. and Pakistan under Trump, it risks deepening the rift with India, which has taken strong exception to Trump’s repeated public claims of intervention and continues to assert that no foreign mediation was involved. Air India Reduces US Flights Amid Safety Checks, Middle East Airspace Issues
NEW DELHI (IANS) — Air India has announced a temporary reduction in its longhaul flight operations to the United States, citing a mix of enhanced safety procedures and extended flight durations due to airspace restrictions in the Middle East.
Starting June 21 and continuing through at least July 15, the airline will scale back several of its Boeing 787 and 777 services.
The move, Air India said, is part of a voluntary effort to carry out more rigorous preflight safety checks and to adapt to longer flight times caused by the ongoing closure of certain Middle Eastern air corridors.
Among the affected routes are three key U.S.
destinations:
The Delhi–San Francisco route will drop from 10 flights a week to seven.
The Delhi–Chicago service will operate just three times weekly instead of seven.
Flights between Delhi and Washington D.C.’s Dulles Airport will reduce from five to three per week.
In a statement, Air India emphasized that the adjusted schedule is being progressively updated on its official website, mobile app, and customer service platforms.

Azim Premji, India’s first signer of the Giving Pledge, is also featured for his transformative philanthropy. Since launching the Azim Premji Foundation nearly 25 years ago, he has endowed it with over $29 billion in Wipro shares.
TIME highlights that the foundation awarded $109 million in grants last year to nearly 940 organizations working in education, health, and more.
The foundation operates 59 field offices and 263 teacher-learning centers across India, directly supporting over eight million children.
Premji’s approach is deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy that “wealth is a public trust,” and his foundation plays an active role in shaping India’s national education policy.
Nikhil Kamath, who became the youngest Indian to sign the Giving Pledge in 2023, appears in the “Trailblazers” category.
Kamath co-founded the brokerage firm Zerodha with his brother Nithin and has committed over $100 million to their Rainmatter Foundation, which focuses on climate change solutions.
He also founded the Young India Philanthropic Pledge (YIPP), encouraging Indians under 45 with fortunes over $100 million to donate at least 25% of their wealth.
YIPP has raised $8 million so far to upgrade 300 schools with improved digital infrastructure, career counseling, and other support.
Kamath told TIME education “is the only democratizing element that can close the inequality gap.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)

GUWAHATI (ANI)- ‘Ansuni Chinkhe’ (Unheard Whispers), a hard-hitting Assamese short film directed by senior police officer Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta, made a resonant mark with its recent screening at Cannes’ Marche du Film, the industry wing of the famed Cannes Film Festival.
Narrated by National Award-winning actress Seema Biswas, the socially charged film explores the deep-seated gender inequalities faced by women in Indian society.
It chronicles the life of a young
girl—from before birth through adulthood—highlighting harsh realities such as female feticide, child marriage, and the erasure of a woman’s identity postmarriage.
Mahanta, who serves as the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati and heads Assam’s Special Task Force, drew upon his front-line experiences in law enforcement to craft a cinematic narrative that intertwines art with activism.
“Ansuni Chinkhe is not just about pain—it’s about resistance,” he said, describing the protagonist’s journey as one of reclaiming her voice and identity as Shakti, the embodiment of divine feminine power.
The film has garnered praise from international film professionals, critics, and distributors for its compelling storytelling and artistic vision.
“It’s a cinematic expression of empowerment,” Mahanta emphasized.
Already honored on the Indian film festival circuit, Ansuni Chinkhe won Best Director at the 17th Jaipur International Film Festival earlier this year.

He reflected on the experience more seriously, saying, “Shooting in that environment exposed me to a world very different from my comfort zone.
Coming from humble beginnings, going back there was nostalgic and enlightening. I’m grateful to the film for taking me back to my childhood.”
When asked about avoiding typecasting during his two-decade career, Dhanush credited his directors for shaping his roles. “I’m like a processor — I don’t do the hard work.
My directors feed me the data, and I process it. All credits go to the filmmakers I’ve worked with,” he said.
