Spend The Summer Launching Your Financial Planning Career

Whether you’re launching a career in the financial planning profession or seeking professional advancement, summer is the perfect time to pursue CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification.

Here’s why a CFP® certification is worth your time and how to go about pursuing it: A Career With It All: Landing a dream job can sometimes require sacrificing a high salary, but a career in financial planning means not having to choose.

It’s both a career that pays well and one where you’ll be able to positively impact the course of people’s lives. The median total compensation for financial planners in 2023 was $192,000. And CFP® professionals, with their competitive edge, earn 10% more than other financial planners.

A Promising Future: While inflation is causing many Americans to worry about their wallets, financial advisors are shielded from some

of these concerns. That’s because their 2022-2023 year-to-year compensation outpaced inflation by 10%. With demand for financial professionals high and expected to grow, working toward CFP® certification can offer security in the years to come.

A Professional Difference: Many people with no credentials call themselves financial advisors.

CFP® professionals, however, have met extensive requirements

that prepare them to competently and ethically advise their clients. They also commit to CFP Board’s ethical standards that require them to put their clients’ interests first. With 86% of consumers preferring an advisor who has passed a certification exam and rigorous education program, CFP® certification can position you to attract and retain clients.

A Flexible Process: CFP® certification is flexible, typically taking 18-

Vertex, CRISPR Therapeutics Land On TIME’s Most Influential Companies List

India-West News Desk

NEW YORK, NY – Two prominent biotechnology companies, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics, both led by Indian American CEOs, have been named to TIME’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies. The recognition highlights their significant contributions to gene therapy and drug development.

the region.

This latest endowment builds on the Krishnans longstanding philanthropic legacy at UTRGV. In 2016, they established the Sujata G. Krishnan Endowed Chair in Neurosciences and the Krishnan All-Around Physician Scholarship.

In 2022, they introduced the Sumant “Butch” Krishnan M.D. Award for Outstanding All-Around Fourth-Year Medical Student, covering full tuition for a student’s final year. In 2024, the university’s simulation hospital in Harlingen was renamed the UTRGV Drs. Subram G. and Elizabeth G. Krishnan Simulation Hospital in their honor.

UTRGV School of Medicine has already launched a search committee to appoint the inaugural holder of the new orthopedic surgery chair, signaling a major investment in specialized care and academic excellence across the Valley.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals, under the leadership of CEO Reshma Kewalramani, was named in the “Impact Awards” category, which spotlights five standout companies making meaningful advancements in their fields. Meanwhile, CRISPR Therapeutics, led by CEO Samarth Kulkarni, earned a spot in the “Pioneers” category for its groundbreaking work in gene editing.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals was lauded for its innovative pipeline, which includes Casgevy, the first FDAapproved CRISPR-based treatment for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, co-developed with CRISPR Therapeutics. The company also recently launched Journavx, the first non-opioid painkiller approved in over two decades. Kewalramani’s strategic focus on addressing diseases with high unmet needs through rational drug design has been pivotal to Vertex’s ascent, contributing to its $114 billion market capitalization.

“Why did we do this? Because we thought pain was an incredibly im-

portant disease where there was no innovation and where we thought we could make a big difference,” Kewalramani stated. “And why did we keep going? Because of the science and our desire to work in areas where we could make this kind of transformative leap.”

Beyond pain management, Vertex is also actively developing a cellbased cure for type 1 diabetes and accelerating treatments for chronic kidney disease, bolstered by its $4.9 billion acquisition of Alpine Immune Sciences in 2024.

CRISPR Therapeutics continues to expand the frontiers of gene editing technology. Following the FDA approval of Casgevy, the company is now exploring the application of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) for widespread conditions such as high cholesterol and lupus.

Samarth Kulkarni, CEO of CRISPR Therapeutics, emphasized the company’s core mission: “Since our founding, CRISPR Therapeutics has been driven by a mission to transform medicine through bold science and meaningful innovation. We are honored to be recognized by TIME. This acknowledgement is testament to the extraordinary dedication and collaboration across our teams to pioneer the next frontier of genetic medicine and improve the lives of patients around the world.”

Why Supporting U.S. Military Members Matters

It is always the right time to show service members they are valued and appreciated for the sacrifices they make every day.

Less than 1% of Americans serve in the military, and they take on unique challenges from which all Americans benefit.

According to advocates, individual actions, no matter how big or small, strengthen service members in the challenges they face each day, showing them they matter to the people they protect.

Since 1941, the USO has been the leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families.

The USO goes where service

members go throughout their time in uniform and beyond, providing support through a wide range of programs, including care packages, entertainment, military spouse and youth programming and a canine program.

Given their decades of expertise on the subject, the USO is offering Americans ideas for how to best celebrate the people who serve:

Send a Message of Support: The USO is collecting 2 million messages of support this year to honor the more than 2 million people serving in the U.S. military and their families. Send a message now at USO.org/2MillionMessages.

Show Your Support With a USO T-Shirt: The USO’s annual t-shirt campaign is a way to show sup-

port for service members and the USO’s programs. To order a t-shirt, visit USO.org.

Become a USO volunteer: More than 20,000 USO volunteers contributed 1.2 million hours last year.

Whether you’re welcoming service members and their families at the airport, assembling care packages, or offering a helping hand at a USO location or event, your time and involvement can make a lasting impact on service members and their families. To learn more and sign up to volunteer, visit uso.org/volunteer.

Four Ways You Can Support Young Men’s Mental Health

There is an epidemic of loneliness affecting boys and young men in America. The fascination with recent shows like Netflix’s “Adolescence,” Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation,” and the return of the online “Ice Bucket Challenge” spotlight this youth mental health crisis in important ways that have reached millions.

It is no secret how the mental health crisis has impacted boys and young men, making the conversation more important than ever.

Meanwhile, statistics show that large numbers of boys and young men are feeling driftless and alienated; and so-called AI “aggrorithms” are filling the void by increasingly driving them toward misogynistic and anti-democratic content online.

Traditional gender roles have resulted in boys and young men often being left out of the mental health conversation and care, despite being at particularly high risk for poor mental health outcomes.

They are the least likely to seek mental health support and are four times more likely to die by suicide than women in the United States.

“Supporting boys in addressing mental health challenges begins with ensuring that they have the role models to learn how to build healthy relationships, ultimately leading them to take healthier actions, and create safer communities for all,” says Brian O’Connor, vice president at Futures Without Violence, a national non-profit.

For nearly 40 years, Futures Without Violence has pioneered programs and resources for advocates, policymakers and other professionals to foster safe, healthy communities.

Through its Engaging Men programming, the organization is working to mitigate online dangers for boys and men, addressing the mental health crisis among them by connecting them with trusted mentors, and is supporting them to engage in healthier relationships.

One of their efforts is a program called Team: Changing Minds (T:CM), which launched three years ago after a $5 million grant through Harry’s Open Mind Initiative. Training already-embedded adults in the lives of kids, like sports coaches, teachers, mentors

and community leaders, to recognize early signs of mental health challenges, the program leverages existing relationships and trust to connect boys and young men to necessary support. With the support of founding investor Harry’s, and partners FUTURES, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, T:CM has trained over 80,000 adults to-date and is on track to reach over 1 million youth within the next year.

Anyone can be a mental health support for the boys and men in their life. Here are four simple, everyday actions family members, friends and coaches can take right away:

1. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask simple questions that show concern. If there are specific changes you’ve noticed, mention them. This can be as simple as, “You’ve been less talkative lately, is there anything you’d like to talk about?”

2. Listen to understand (not to respond) with empathy. If you’ve shown the young people in your life that you’re someone who really hears them, they may be more likely to talk to you when they are having a rough time.

3. Ask for help. You’re not a therapist, and you aren’t expected to have all the answers. Lean on experts (such as school counselors or your child’s pediatrician) and brainstorm others you can call in to be part of the support team. You’re an important piece of this puzzle, but you never have to do this alone.

4. If you or someone you know needs help, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by just dialing 988.

To become a Team Changing Minds responder, visit teamchangingminds.org. To learn more about the mental health crisis affecting men and boys, visit futureswithoutviolence.org.

“Focusing on everyday actions to empower boys and young men to step into the simple things they can do as leaders, allies and change-makers is the goal, ” says O’Connor. (StatePoint)

Southern Hospitality Meets Accessibility In The Bluegrass State

This Kentucky sense of hospitality extends past simple niceties into tangible efforts to ensure everyone enjoys themselves. As a result, the Bluegrass State is brimming with fun and accessible vacation destinations and activities, no matter what someone’s needs may be.

Kentucky is known the world over for gorgeous hiking trails and camp sites. Several trails, which combine breathtaking scenery with ease of mobility, are ideal for wheelchair users.

Flat Lick Falls Recreational Area located in McKee, features a paved trail that leads to a stunning view of the falls. The trail is just under a mile long and provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, plant collecting or simply relaxing as you make your way to the waterfall’s overlook.

Texas Premiere: Humans In The Loop

What if the future of artificial intelligence was being shaped not in glass towers or Silicon Valley labs—but in the quiet corners of rural India?

That’s the haunting premise of Aranya Sahay’s debut feature, Humans in the Loop, a film as intimate as it is expansive. Set in Jharkhand but echoing concerns shared across the globe, the 74-minute drama delves into the subtle, often invisible ways technology absorbs the values—and the biases—of the humans who train it.

The film centers on Nehma (a remarkable Sonal Madhushankar), an Oraon tribal woman who returns to her ancestral village after a

divorce. Struggling to support her children, she takes a job as a data annotator—labeling images to train AI systems. She soon uncovers a disquieting truth: the algorithms she’s helping to build absorb human bias, rather than eliminate it.

As Nehma tags image after image, her work becomes a mirror to her life—awakening memories of childhood, cultural erasure, and the strained relationship with her daughter, Dhaanu (12, played by Ridhima Singh). The film quietly reveals how AI can be a vehicle for systemic prejudice, even as Nehma grapples with her role in shaping that reality.

Cinematographers Harshit Saini and Monica Tiwari render Jharkhand’s forests, fields, and sacred spaces with painterly intimacy. Visual motifs—such as porcupines or cave art— serve as symbolic bridges between spiritual heritage and technological intrusion.

The film’s minimalistic editing and immersive sound design by Kalhan Raina deepen the experience. Natural ambient noises blend with electronic textures, reinforcing Nehma’s internal and external transformation.

Essential Homeowner Fire Safety For The Summer And Beyond

Home fires today are burning hotter and faster and causing more damage than ever before, according to National Fire Protection Association data. This is why every second counts when it comes to a fire emergency.

Summer, often filled with backyard BBQs, fireworks, friendly gatherings and even campfires, is a great opportunity to evaluate your home safety tools and plans; and make upgrades where necessary.

A new partnership between Kidde, a trusted leader in fire safety for more than 100 years, and Ring, has delivered a cutting-edge collection of Smart Smoke and Combination Alarms (Smoke + CO) featuring seamless integration into the Ring app.

Combining Kidde’s advanced smoke and carbon monoxide sensors that provide quicker, more accurate alerts (29% faster average smoke detection based on internal testing of smoldering wood fires for Kidde 9th Edition vs. leading competitor 8th Edition products) with built-in smart technology, you can better protect your home from anywhere.

Whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation, you’ll receive instant notifications through the Ring app if unsafe levels of smoke or carbon monoxide are detected, allowing you to take immediate action.

Ring also offers an optional 24/7 Smoke &

CO Monitoring subscription service ($5/ month), where trained agents can request emergency help and alert your emergency contacts in the event of an alarm.

“We believe these alarms represent a major step forward in whole home safety, and we’re excited to get them into the hands of consumers,” says Isis Wu, president of Global Residential Fire & Safety at Kidde.

Additional features can ensure smooth operation of your home safety equipment. For example, the Ring app notifies you when

your devices’ batteries are low approximately seven days prior to the device chirping, so you can ensure operation with no down time.

And Kidde’s enhanced sensing technology reduces false alarms often caused by cooking—a leading reason people disable their devices.

And it doesn’t stop there. Once you install one of these smart alarms in your home, you can receive real-time alerts from your other eligible hardwired Kidde products to create a connected home that helps keep you and

your family safe.

Remember, having working smoke alarms in the home can double the likelihood of safely escaping a house fire in the event of an emergency and are there to help protect you round-the-clock.

That’s why it’s important to install them throughout the house, including the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, hallways, basement and garage.

As an additional safety measure, you should also be prepared to tackle small fires quickly. Keep fire extinguishers in key areas, including the kitchen, basement and garage.

These new alarms are available now, exclusively at The Home Depot, and will be rolling out to other retailers later this year. To learn more about the intersection of home safety equipment and smart technology, as well as to find fire and CO safety tips, visit kidde.com.

“Humans are flawed. We forget things, we mess up, and we assume a home fire and other emergencies will never happen to us,” says Wu.

“Unfortunately, no home is impervious to an emergency, making the proper safety precautions essential for every household.” (StatePoint)

Is Financial Planning The Right Career Path For You?

Interested in launching a financial planning career but not sure if it’s right for you? With its many different career tracks and specialties, financial planning suits a range of personalities, goals and skill sets. Contrary to popular belief, financial planning involves much more than crunching numbers!

CFP Board breaks down some common paths you can take in the financial planning profession:

Advisory/Wealth Management: Working directly with clients to guide them through the creation and management of a financial plan is the most well-known function of financial planners. Many large firms start new employees in support positions to help them gain a broad understanding of the client service process. However, opportunities exist — such as at virtual advice centers — to assume a wealth management role more quickly.

Operations: Those who work in operations support financial planners by handling advisor and client files, generating reports, scheduling meetings and troubleshooting processes. This is a common entry point at many firms; however, some firms view this as a separate career track with its own growth potential.

Business Development: Some firms offer business development as a specialized career path for experienced advisors

with a significant client base and a strong reputation for competency and ethics. This role is ideal for outgoing people, as client outreach and retention require strong marketing and networking skills.

Technical Support: Technical support specialists use advanced tools to process com-

plex information and navigate decisions. Responsibilities might include data gathering, modeling, case design and financial plan development, making this a good path if you love data and analytics.

Your ideal path will depend on many factors, including firm size, compensation structure, culture, pro bono opportunities and how well the role aligns with your long-term goals. Regardless of the path you choose, having the right credentials is critical. Earning CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification demonstrates that you’ve met rigorous training and experience requirements. For a leg up in the job market, download CFP Board’s “Guide to Careers in Financial Planning” at cfp.net.

Financial planning is not a one-size-fits-all profession. Understanding its many facets can help you find the path that suits your talents and interests. (StatePoint)n

How To Use Your Financial Planning Background To Help People

As a financial advisor, you can help people reach their goals and navigate the financial ins and outs of major life moments.

In today’s challenging economic climate, how can you maximize your ability to serve others? By becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. Here’s why:

Building expertise: CFP® certification equips financial planners with the skills to deliver ethical, competent financial guidance. CFP® professionals are trained to offer holistic advice and commit to CFP Board to act as a fiduciary, meaning they always work with their clients’ best interests in mind.

Helping in times of economic un-

certainty: Advisors help clients manage risk and make informed decisions during volatile times. CFP® professionals led “The Power of a Plan: Navigating Market Uncertainty With Confidence,” a recent webinar available online, to offer historical context and practical guidance for today’s economic challenges.

Now, as federal employees face unprecedented job insecurity, CFP® professionals nationwide are volunteering their services, pro bono or at reduced cost, to current and former federal employees. Pro bono work: Free, no-stringsattached financial advice enriches individuals, families and communities in need.

That’s why CFP Board encourages

professionals to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per year of pro bono service and urges firms to incorporate pro bono opportunities into their workplace culture.

Reducing the racial wealth gap: According to Federal Reserve sta-

tistics from 2022, the typical white family held six times the wealth of the typical Black family and five times that of the typical Hispanic family.

CFP® professionals are positioned to reduce racial wealth gaps by ex-

panding their client bases and providing personalized advice that is tailored to any situation.

Ongoing opportunities to help: Whether it’s saving for a home or coping with the loss of a loved one, financial planners guide people through life’s most significant — and often challenging — moments.

8 Key Steps To Buying A Home

Buying a home might be the most significant financial decision you ever make. By understanding these eight key steps in the process, you can move forward with confidence, clarity and long-term success:

1. Understand what you can afford. Understanding your finances may not be as fun as house hunting, but it’s necessary for determining how much you can afford. Most lenders suggest spending no more than 30% of your monthly income (before taxes are taken out) on mortgage payments, including principal, interest, taxes and insurance. Your credit, current interest rates and closing costs also impact what you can afford, so take these factors into consideration. Freddie Mac’s Homebuying Budget Calculator is a useful resource during this step in the process.

2. Explore down payment options. Today’s down payment options are expanding homeownership accessibility. For example, certain mortgage products allow you to put down as little as 3%. However, if you make a down payment of less than 20%, you may have to pay for private mortgage insurance until you reach 20% equity in your home. Knowing the possibilities

for funding your down payment, beyond personal savings, is also helpful. These may include governmental assistance or gifts and loans from relatives. Use Freddie Mac’s Down Payment and PMI Calculators to see what’s possible.

3. Find your team. Having the right people by your side makes homebuying more enjoyable and less stressful. This team may include a housing counselor, real estate agent and lender. Who you select matters, so look for experienced, trusted professionals.

4. Find the right home. To find the right home, assess the property

based on factors like its proximity to certain school districts, public transportation and your job. Then consider what type of home you want to live in. From single-family homes to condominiums, each has its advantages and disadvantages, and the right one for you will depend on your finances, lifestyle and stage of life. t’s easy to get overwhelmed by the possibilities, so consider creating a wish list to narrow down your choices. Include your must-haves and deal breakers, and reflect on how your needs may evolve.

5. Apply for a loan. Finding the right loan may make a big differ-

ence in your monthly payments and overall loan cost. Shop around and check out Freddie Mac’s Loan Comparison Calculator to determine which loan is best for your housing goals. Then, work with your lender to apply for and complete the application process. The process takes roughly 45 days and will include providing proof of employment, banking statements and other documentation.

6. Make your offer. Through this phase, you’ll work closely with your real estate agent who will help determine a fair offer price while making sure you stay within range of what you can afford. They’ll also handle all contract negotiations with the seller’s agent.

7. Get an inspection and appraisal. Once your offer is final, your lender will order an appraisal. This is a necessary step in securing financing, and protects you and the bank by ensuring the home’s value matches the agreed upon sale price. Companies like Freddie Mac may offer appraisal waivers in certain instances, so be sure to ask your lender if one is possible. For peace of mind, you may also wish to pay for a home inspection. If the inspector finds issues, you can work

with the seller to determine if they need to pay for repairs. Or, if you have a home inspection contingency, you could renegotiate the sales price, require the seller make repairs or back out.

8. Close on your home. Closing, also called settlement, is a meeting where you sign final documents, pay closing costs, and ownership is officially transferred to you. To prepare, secure your closing funds. Freddie Mac’s Closing Costs Calculator can help you estimate how much you’ll pay at settlement. You should also do a formal walkthrough of the property to check that it’s in the agreed upon condition and read all the closing documents — don’t be afraid to ask your attorney or closing agent questions With educational resources like My Home by Freddie Mac, you can make informed, empowered decisions every step of the way. In fact, 7 out of 10 My Home users feel better prepared to buy a home. Visit https://myhome.freddiemac. com/buying to access these tools and resources. Preparation is key to successful homeownership. How To Borrow For College Without The Stress

A student loan can be a valuable tool to help you earn your degree – and with the right plan, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

“Smart borrowing starts with knowing the basics. The more you understand, the more confident you’ll feel,” says Dan Kennedy, chief marketing officer, College Ave.

“Our research finds that while a majority of students are focused on money management, they could use a little more information about how borrowing works.”

To help ensure your student loan helps pave the way for your future success, not a future headache, Kennedy recommends avoiding these common borrowing mistakes:

Skipping federal student loans: Before taking out a private student loan, exhaust your other options first. Free money you don’t have to pay back is always preferable to a loan, so look into scholarships.

You should also fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to unlock federal student aid, including grants, scholarships and federal student loans.

Getting your Federal Direct student loans from the government will often beat private loans in terms of interest rates and repayment options. Plus, if you go into a qualifying field, the government may even grant you student loan

down the line.

Not having a cosigner, if needed: As a college student, you likely don’t have an established credit history or sufficient income and may not get approved for a private loan on your own.

Consider improving your chances of getting approved and securing a lower interest rate by adding a cosigner, like a parent, to your loan application.

Indo-Caribbean Mariamma Hindu Temple Fights To Stay Open

QUEENS, NEW YORK — The Sri Shakti Mariamma Hindu Temple, a haven of faith and inclusivity in Richmond Hill, is facing imminent closure unless it can raise more than $150,000 for urgent repairs required by the city.

forgiveness.

Borrowing too much: Borrow only what you need to pay for schooling and basic living expenses.

This will help eliminate the temptation to use the money on items that are not an investment in your future.

You should also avoid borrowing more than you can comfortably repay based on your expected future income.

A College Ave March 2025 student survey found that 67% of those who expected to have student loan debt post-graduation didn’t know or were unsure of how much their monthly payments would be.

Before taking out a loan, use CollegeAve.com’s student loan calculator to get a sense of its overall cost and monthly loan payments.

Not shopping around: If you do end up taking out a private student loan, it’s important to pay attention to lenders’ interest rates and repayment options.

Unlike federal loans, which have fixed interest rates for all borrowers, private student loan interest rates vary from lender to lender.

And because your repayment plan can impact your monthly payment and overall cost, it’s key to choose one that fits your budget. Whatever loan you do go with, understand its terms, so there are no surprises

Not having a repayment strategy: The College Ave survey found that 76% of students say that they confidently pay their bills on time each month and 63% are working toward personal financial goals. Carry these healthy financial habits with you to the repayment stage of your loan.

Having a plan for repayment can make a big difference down the road.

Think about when you’ll start making payments and how much you can afford each month.

The more prepared you are, the less stressful it’ll be when it’s time to pay it back.

College is a big investment, and having a smart approach to paying for it is essential.

After applying for financial aid and scholarships, and maximizing your income and savings, do some groundwork to ensure that if you have to borrow, you are borrowing smart. (StatePoint)

For years, this Indo-Caribbean temple, said on its GoFundMe page, has offered refuge to women in crisis, celebrated same-sex unions rejected elsewhere, and provided food, clothing, and comfort to the community’s most vulnerable.

But now, the building that houses these efforts is under threat—from both city mandates and an uncooperative neighbor.

We’ve fed the hungry. We’ve celebrated Pride. And now we’re being asked to leave unless we can afford to stay.”

The trouble began with noise complaints from a neighbor. What followed was a city inspection that determined the temple—housed in a building zoned for manufacturing—must register as a community facility.

That designation comes with a steep price: major upgrades to electrical systems, plumbing, fire safety, and ADA accessibility.

A bathroom renovation and wheelchair ramp alone could cost tens of thousands.

“It’s more than just a temple. It’s a home,” writes Pandita Chandni, the temple’s presiding priestess and one of the few women in such a role in Hindu religious leadership. “We’ve helped people escape violence.

How Precise Diagnostic Tools Support Personalized Bladder Cancer Care

Every bladder cancer journey is different, and no single treatment or diagnostic path fits everyone. According to patients who have experienced bladder cancer, the best care for you will depend on your personal situation.

“After experiencing recurring bladder cancer, I learned that understanding my path forward meant looking beyond general statistics and seeking out more precise care based on my individual case,” says Michael F.

A More Complete Picture

Because doctors often tailor treatment decisions, it’s best that the diagnostic procedures they use give them the most complete picture possible. One option your doctor may offer is Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC), a diagnostic procedure designed to help your urologic surgeon better visualize tumors in your bladder.

BLC involves placing a special imaging agent into the bladder at least one hour before the procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon will examine the bladder lining using regular white light, then switch on a

special blue light.

The imaging agent causes the tumors to glow bright pink in the special blue light. The enhanced visibility helps define the edges of visible tumors and reveals a certain type of flat, cancerous lesion that can otherwise be difficult to detect.

BLC is currently used during TURBT (trans-

urethral resection of bladder tumor) procedures and can also be used during cystoscopies to monitor progress during surveillance visits.

Your doctor might recommend BLC to provide a more detailed view of your bladder and to help gather tissue samples that can provide information that aids in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Having a better understanding of the characteristics of your bladder cancer can help your doctor determine or adjust your treatment

plan, and choose an appropriate follow-up approach for you.

“Once my doctors began using blue light, it became a standard part of my cystoscopies, allowing them to identify areas of concern that had not been visible before,” says Michael F.

Michael F’s recurring bladder cancer required multiple rounds of treatment, including immunotherapy, chemotherapy and eventually gene therapy. Over the course of his treatments, he underwent 10–11 cystoscopies — most of which utilized BLC to identify suspicious cells that were otherwise undetectable.

“With my robust form of cancer, the enhanced cystoscopies were able to reveal suspicious cells that turned out to be pre-cancerous. This helped my care team respond faster and more efficiently,” he says.

Asking About Your Options

Your urologist will consider many factors when recommending diagnostics, and not every tool is right for every bladder cancer case. When discussing your care with your urologic surgeon, here are a few questions you might ask:

1. “Would Blue Light Cystoscopy be helpful in my case?”

3. “How do you personalize care plans for someone with my diagnosis?”

Michael F. often reminds others that statistics are general, not personal, and encourages speaking up when something doesn’t seem right. “Staying informed of your care options, as well as being honest, open and proactive with your care team throughout your bladder cancer journey can help you get precise, personalized care,” he says.

At the heart of the temple is a six-foot-tall murti of the fierce goddess Mariamman, known for protecting the vulnerable. Fittingly, this temple has also protected those overlooked by society, say temple devotees.

Despite serving hundreds, the temple has never asked congregants for money, an Associated Press report said. Its rituals have been sustained by individual donations tied to specific prayers. But now, for the first time, leadership is turning outward for help.

Beavers: The Ultimate Ecosystem Engineers

As the sun sets over a forest stream, a beaver family gets to work. For millions of years, these large rodents with bright orange teeth and a flat paddle-shaped tail have been reshaping landscapes by craftily constructing dams that slow flowing water, creating ponds where they build their lodge homes.

Chomping through the night, they drag aspen and willow branches through the water, stack them with precision, and seal the gaps with mud and plants. All this hard work benefits people and the planet.

“Thanks to their impressive building skills, these industrious animals, which are found across most of North America, are a keystone species—an animal that supports its entire habitat,” says Clay Bolt, manager of Great Plains Communications at World Wildlife Fund.

Many wetlands started as beaverdammed streams. As the beaver pond grows, it can support an increasing number of plants and animals. Frogs splash at the edges, fish dart beneath the surface, and many species of birds find refuge in these lush habitats.

But there’s an invisible benefit too – these waterlogged areas are amazing at trapping air pollution. Studies show that beaver-made wetlands provide services contributing to clean air and water worth

hundreds of millions of dollars— though to the beavers, it’s all in a day’s work.

During a heavy rainstorm, while some streams and rivers overflow their banks, a beaver-engineered stream system handles the floodwaters with ease. Their dams work like aquatic speed bumps, creating winding paths that slow rushing water. This prevents soil washing away and allows rich nutrients to settle to the bottom.

Over time, this activity gradually raises the stream beds and reconnects them to surrounding land that used to flood naturally. And during dry spells, beaver dams release stored water slowly, keeping streams flowing when they might otherwise dry up.

Perhaps most impressively, these structures function like a free water treatment plant, cleaning water by trapping dirt and filtering out pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus.

Recent studies have also found that areas with beaver activity burn much less severely during wildfires – suffering only one-third the damage compared to similar areas without beavers.

In the western United States, where landscapes are subject to drought and wildfires, fires often burn everything except areas surrounding beaver complexes. There, even during dry spells, water continues to soak into the ground, refilling underground water supplies and

get, and unexpected bill increases can make planning difficult.

Unlike some other internet options, T-Mobile doesn’t have introductory promo pricing that increases later, making it easy to account for this line item into the future.

Select plans even come with extras, like subscriptions to popular streaming services, so you can save on these monthly expenses too.

Get Smart

Now that you have internet that can support your smart home, it’s time to select a smart home ecosystem on which to run it, along with devices you’d like to connect it to. Just be sure the ecosystem and devices you choose are compatible.

keeping plants moist. Putting this into practice, World Wildlife

Fund is working with ranchers in the Northern Great Plains to recreate beaver habitat by constructing dams—Beaver Dam Analogs or BDAS—that mimic the crafty rodent’s water management systems to store water, a particularly precious resource in this arid habitat.

Some landowners are even seeing beavers return thanks to the more favorable conditions provided by BDAs.

“By protecting beaver families and welcoming them back to waterways, communities can benefit from their building skills to create landscapes that better withstand severe weather, support wildlife, and suppress wildfire, one carefully laid stick at a time,” says Bolt.

World Wildlife Fund’s new “Stories of Hope and Wonder” is an ongoing series that connects people to the wonder of nature and offers hope for a future benefiting both people and wildlife.

Each month, Stories of Hope and Wonder will feature a different species overcoming some of nature’s toughest obstacles to ensure their survival. To read past editions of Stories of Hope and Wonder visit www.worldwildlife.org/hopeandwonder. (StatePoint)

The good news? While this technology that adds seamless convenience to your life comes with a price tag, many smart home features can help you save on monthly expenses, offsetting the cost of your new smart home.

For example, devices that make your home more secure, such as smart locks, doorbells, cameras and security systems, could potentially score you a discount on renters or homeowners insurance.

Other devices, such as thermostats, lights and appliances, can be programmed to help reduce energy usage and bills.

Of course, you should be sure to protect all your smart devices from hackers by using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, and by keeping systems up to date.

There are endless details to manage when settling into a new residence. Fortunately, setting up internet and smart home technology no longer needs to be stressful. Sponsored content.

Empowering Travelers To Prepare Against Carbon Monoxide This Summer

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a dangerous, sometimes deadly threat, often impacting people in places where they sleep, such as at home or in hotels, motels and vacation rentals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning not linked to fires, more than 100,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 14,000 are hospitalized.

When it comes to carbon monoxide and fire safety, state and local regulations can vary widely, making it especially crucial to protect yourself when you’re away from home.

Kidde, North America’s number one fire safety brand (based on total household installations as of December 2023), is sharing some

important insights and tips for safer summer travels.

Regulation Gaps

It’s important to take routine measures to help protect your home from fire and CO while you are away, such as by monitoring your home safety devices via an app. You should also consider address-

With A Purpose’ Featuring Anupam Kher Brings Spotlight To Education And Empowerment In Austin

(Continued From Page 01)

The centerpiece of the evening was the screening of Tanvi The Great, a socially driven Hindi film starring Kher, followed by a moving dialogue between the actor and audience.

Speaking with candor and warmth, Kher shared personal anecdotes and emphasized the power of resilience, education, and storytelling to transform lives.

“This is not just about a film,” Kher told attendees. “It’s about igniting hope—and giving every young person a fair chance at success.”

The event drew an enthusiastic response, with attendees praising both the cinematic experience and its underlying mission. “This was a beautiful blend of culture, purpose, and community action,” said Alok Singh, HC4A Board President. “It’s inspiring to see art being used as a catalyst for change.”

Funds raised during the evening will directly support HC4A’s scholarship programs, which enable students from low-income families to pursue vocational training and career-ready certification.

According to the organization, more than 800 students have benefited from the Scholarship program since its inception.

For HC4A, the premiere marked another step in a broader journey. “We believe education is the most powerful equalizer,” said founder Harish Kotecha. “And when someone like Anupam Kher lends his voice to that mission, it amplifies our reach in ways we couldn’t imagine.”

As the credits rolled and lights came up, the message was clear: in the right setting, a film can do more than entertain — it can empower, inspire, and build a bridge to a brighter future.

ing the same safety risks at your destination.

Only 14 states nationwide currently require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in hotels and motels, and there is no federal law requiring hotels to install carbon monoxide detectors in every guest room, reports “Electrical Contractor Magazine.”

This could leave you vulnerable to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning when traveling.

While regulations are stricter for smoke alarms, inconsistent enforcement means they aren’t always reliable.

That’s why it’s essential to add both fire and CO safety to your travel prep routine.

Destination Safety

As the industry leader in fire and CO safety, Kidde is committed to educating the public and helping reduce the risk of CO and fire-related incidents at home and during travel.

Destination Safety, the brand’s education-first initiative designed to empower travelers to take control of their safety, includes this Travel Safety Checklist:

1) Pack a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm for use at your destination and test it upon arrival.

2) Test existing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in rental properties.

3) Ask important safetyrelated questions, such as the location of your room in relation to emergency exits and the number and placement of detectors in and around the space.

In addition to providing educational resources and advocating for stronger safety regulations for homes and hospitality, Kidde will be donating to local communities where CO regulations are not yet in place.

These efforts aim to raise awareness, increase access to lifesaving carbon monoxide products, and help safeguard these vulnerable communities.

Addressing gaps in CO safety

regulations across the travel and hospitality industries will require collaboration and advocacy from organizations nationwide.

Through education, innovative product solutions, and continued support for stronger CO alarm regulations in hotels, motels and vacation rentals, Kidde remains dedicated to driving meaningful change.

To learn more about Kidde’s fire and CO safety resources, visit Kidde.com/safety-hub and follow @KiddeFireSafety on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn.

Whether you’re traveling with family on vacation or with colleagues on a business trip, the absence of comprehensive industry regulation could present a safety gap at your destination for you and those you’re traveling with.

Fortunately, you can be proactive about CO and fire safety this summer travel season. (StatePoint)

Ridhima Singh is equally compelling as Dhaanu, portraying the push-pull of generational tension with realism and heart. Together, they bring emotional depth to a story rooted in place but resonant far beyond it.

Humans in the Loop has drawn acclaim, winning Best Film and the FIPRESCI Award at the 16th Bengaluru International Film Festival, along with the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. But its resonance goes beyond awards. At its heart, this is a story about labor, dignity, and the invisible hands behind the digital world—a theme with profound global urgency.

Aranya Sahay’s script is refreshingly clear-eyed, forgoing technical jargon in favor of emotional truth. The result is a film that speaks not just to South Asian audiences, but to anyone navigating the uneasy merge between technology and tradition, progress and preservation. Humans in the Loop begs the question: as machines learn from us—what exactly are we teaching them?

In addition, thoughtfully repositioned water tanks create a better weight distribution, further easing operation.

How A Near-Death Experience Revealed The Secret To Lasting Happiness

What if happiness isn’t about accumulating wealth, but about how you use your resources—time, money and emotional energy— to create joy for yourselves and others? Picture your next family gathering not filled with tension or superficial chatter, but genuine laughter and meaningful connections.

Imagine seeing the joy on your loved ones’ faces when you share something special with them—not after you’re gone, but right now, creating memories that last.

Science confirms that generosity and gratitude significantly enhance personal happiness.

A 2020 University of Chicago study found that people who intentionally give to others experience deeper and longer-lasting joy compared to those who spend only on themselves.

Educational entrepreneur and author of “The Happiness Experiment,” Carl B. Barney is sharing practical, achievable steps to experiencing more happiness today:

Express Daily Gratitude: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Notice how quickly your outlook shifts toward joy and positivity.

Create Memorable Experiences: Plan meaningful, shared moments

with loved ones rather than simply giving material gifts.

The happiness derived from these shared experiences endures long after the event itself. Give with Purpose: Offer thoughtful gestures, advice or financial help in meaningful ways. Even small acts of generosity can transform relationships and significantly boost your happiness.

This approach to happiness isn’t just theory—it’s a proven pathway to a richer, more fulfilling life.

After a near-death experience in a plane crash profoundly shifted his worldview, Barney realized he wanted to witness the joy and impact of his generosity firsthand, rather than leaving his loved ones to benefit only after he was gone.

Discover more about this transformative approach and start enhancing your happiness today at happinessexperiment.com. Happiness can’t be bought, but it can be cultivated. As science and real-world experiences show, generosity and gratitude are fundamental pillars to long-lasting joy. (StatePoint)

How Paid Family And Medical Leave Benefits

Families And Businesses

The United States is one of the only countries in the world that does not guarantee paid family and medical leave to workers, leaving millions of babies without the care they need in their earliest months of life.

Paid leave is associated with higher breastfeeding rates, regularly attended well-child visits with pediatricians, and other key markers of short- and long-term health for young children and adults. Plus, early relationships with parents and caregivers, specifically in the first three years of life, shape a child’s brain development, laying the foundation for lifelong learning, health and well-being.

With less than a third of people in the United States having access to paid family and medical leave, many families are left without financial security during a critical time for child development. Access to paid family and medical leave is lowest among workers with the greatest needs, including those with lower incomes, without college degrees, and who work part time.

The production, transportation, construction, maintenance and service sectors have some of the low-

est rates of access.

Advocates are bringing awareness to the many working parents and caregivers who are forced to sacrifice their jobs and savings when they need time off to bond with their young children or care for themselves or a sick or injured family member.

“All workers—regardless of location, education or job type— should have access to paid family and medical leave to provide the care and stability children and families need to thrive,” says Emmett Avery, coalition manager for the Vermont Paid Leave Coalition, a statewide alliance advocating for the strong paid family and medical leave program in Vermont.

Interestingly, paid family and medical leave is not only good for families, real-world results show that it’s also good for businesses and the economy. Access to paid leave benefits businesses by increasing

employee productivity and morale, improving employee retention, and reducing turnover costs, and states with paid leave programs see fewer families relying on public assistance, lowering costs for taxpayers.

“Paid family and medical leave is a commonsense policy that’s supported by an overwhelming majority of voters and essential for infants and toddlers, families, businesses and the economy,” says Dan O’Brien the policy director for Children First PA, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of children in Pennsylvania and beyond.

“Everyone can help push for policies that give all working families the time they need to care for their loved ones without sacrificing their jobs or financial security.”

As women reshape the financial picture in the United States, demand will grow for financial planners who can better meet their needs.

One way to fulfill that demand? Bring more women into the financial services profession.

Here are several reasons why now is the right time for women to get their CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification.

Women are hitting roadblocks: Women are taking the financial reins in most households, with more than 2 in 3 women serving as their household’s primary decision-maker for investments.

Yet many are hitting roadblocks when it comes to their confidence in topics such as managing investments and creating diversified portfolios. Women financial planners are uniquely qualified to help other women build knowledge in these areas and achieve their financial goals.

Women clientele value people over machines: Despite the rise of automated financial planning tools, 56% of women say a financial planner who provides a broad, comprehensive perspective and expertise is the resource they trust the most to help them meet their financial goals.

Trump’s Engagement With Pak Strains

India Ties, Modi Turned Down Invite To Visit US

(Continued From Page 01) The decision, analysts say, reflects New Delhi’s growing unease with Trump’s posture toward Pakistan and a shift in India’s external strategy. Reuters quoted Indian officials and experts noting that India is recalibrating its approach to China as a hedge, even amid longstanding mistrust and border tensions with Beijing.

“We have communicated to the U.S. our position on cross-border terrorism, which is a red line for us,” a senior Indian official told Reuters. “Trump’s inability to understand our concerns does create some wrinkle in ties,” the official added.

Despite years of close cooperation between Washington and New Delhi, Indian officials say Trump’s renewed interest in Pakistan—including discussions of counterterrorism collaboration and potential

arms sales—has cast a pall over relations. “The frequency and intensity with which the U.S. is engaging with Pakistan, and seemingly not taking Indian concerns into account, especially after India’s recent conflict with Pakistan, has contributed to a bit of a bilateral malaise,” Washington-based analyst Michael Kugelman told Reuters.

As a result, India has not only slowed trade negotiations with the U.S. but also proposed retaliatory tariffs at the World Trade Organization. A U.S. official, speaking to Reuters, said Washington maintains strong relationships with both India and Pakistan and does not compare one with the other.

Still, the damage may have been done. Trump’s repeated claims that he single-handedly averted nuclear war between the two South Asian nations drew a sharp rebuke from

quired of machines with similar features. Tineco has sold over 19 million smart cleaning appliances globally, making it a trusted leader in smart floor care. To learn more, visit amazon.com.

Natural air purification: Indoor gardening is not only a major aesthetic upgrade, some houseplants actually measurably improve indoor air quality and help manage mold growth. For cleaner, healthier air, pair a high-quality air purifier with some carefully placed greenery in your various living spaces. For example, a good choice for bedrooms are snake plants, which remove toxins like formaldehyde and xylene from the air while releasing oxygen and moisture for

better breathing at night. Whereas spider plants are great for kitchens and bathrooms, as they can help fight mold in these humid rooms. If you have pets or suffer from allergies, add an Areca palm to the living room to help trap allergens. Don’t have a green thumb? Apps like Planta or GardenTags make plant care intuitive for beginners. Simpler still, easyplant offers selfwatering plants that arrive in pots featuring built-in reservoirs you need fill only once a month, along with lifetime access to plant experts over chat. Cleanliness does not always equate to more elbow grease. Implementing smart upgrades can help you maintain a healthy, hygienic home with less effort. (StatePoint)

With Fall Semester Approaching, Lawmakers Sound Alarm Over Indian Student Visa Delays

Modi, who insisted the ceasefire was brokered directly between Indian and Pakistani military commanders—not through U.S. intervention.

In parallel, India has taken steps to reopen dialogue with China, a significant shift following the deadly 2020 border clash in the Galwan Valley. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar recently visited Beijing, and New Delhi is easing restrictions on Chinese investments that were imposed after the clash. Analysts see the thaw as strategic.

India’s recalibration, officials suggest, is driven partly by uncertainty over how Trump might engage with Beijing. “With an unpredictable dealmaker in the White House, New Delhi cannot rule out Sino-U.S. rapprochement,” Christopher Clary of the University at Albany told Reuters. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

India-West News Desk WASHINGTON, DC — With the fall academic term fast approaching and thousands of Indian students still struggling to secure U.S. visas, a group of 14 members of Congress has urged the State Department to take urgent corrective action to resolve the persistent backlogs that threaten to derail international education and damage America’s global reputation. In a letter sent to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on July 24, the lawmakers — including Indian American representatives Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Shri Thanedar — expressed serious concern over the visa processing delays affecting Indian students.

Led by Rep. Deborah Ross (DNC), the group highlighted the critical contributions of Indian students, who represent the largest group of international students in the U.S. and contribute an estimated $9 billion annually to the American economy. “We are deeply dismayed by the ongoing visa delays that could prevent many bright Indian students from continuing their education in the United States,” the letter stated. “Our universities thrive on the global talent they attract — and right now, that pipeline is under threat.”

The appeal was addressed to Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter and included 13 Democrats and one Republican — Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska — demonstrating growing bipartisan concern. The letter follows a nearly month-long freeze in student visa appointments by the Trump administration earlier this summer. The website of the U.S. Embassy in India continues to warn that timely visa appointments cannot be guaranteed, compounding anxiety for students who are reportedly checking online portals multiple times daily in hopes of securing interview slots.

The Indian government has reportedly raised the issue with U.S. authorities in New Delhi and Washington, as Indian media reports highlight widespread frustration. Some education consultancies anticipate up to an 80% drop in outbound students to the U.S. this year. Data from May 2025 reflects the toll: F-1 student visa issuances to Indians were down 41% year-overyear, while overall global F-1 visas fell 22%. With competition from countries like the UK and Canada intensifying, lawmakers and education leaders are calling for swift intervention before September brings further enrollment fallout.

Preparing Pre-Teens And Teens For The Classroom Includes Immunizations

Young people ages 7 to 18 are busy checking off their back-to-school or college lists. Visiting their pediatrician or family doctor to get up to date on immunizations should be part of that list.

Immunizations will prepare their immune systems to recognize and resist viruses that spread quickly once classes begin. These are viruses that can lead to health

issues like infertility, muscle paralysis, brain damage, blindness, deafness and cancer. The recommended immunization schedule approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is based on ongoing review of the most recent scientific data and relies on two main factors: when the vaccine works best with your child’s immune system, and when they need protection most.

“Seeing your pediatrician to catch up on vaccinations helps keep classmates, teachers and others in the school community healthy, too.” says Rebekah Fenton, MD, FAAP, an adolescent medicine physician at a commu-

United Sikhs Bring Aid And Hope To Flood-Hit Texans

DALLAS, TX — In flood-battered Kerr County, where homes have been damaged and families displaced, one humanitarian group has quietly become a lifeline. The disaster response team from United Sikhs is providing much more than supplies— they’re bringing timely comfort, warmth, and hope.

Volunteers from the global Sikh humanitarian organization have fanned out across affected areas, delivering hot meals, nonperishable groceries, clothes, hygiene kits, medical supplies, cleaning products, and even baby formula. As floodwaters recede, their presence has become a symbol of compassion in action.

nity health center in Chicago.

The AAP is sharing this information about recommended vaccines and the diseases they prevent:

Meningococcal Disease

At 11 or 12, your pre-teen should get their first dose of meningococcal vaccine to protect against meningococcal disease, a fastacting disease that is life-threatening if not caught and treated within a few hours.

Caused by bacteria that can infect the bloodstream, brain and spinal cord, anyone can get meningococcal disease. Among young people, it’s most common in babies and 16-20-year-olds. Infections are spread through close contact like coughing or kissing, and lengthy contact in spaces like college dorms. Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine protects against four bacterial strains, labeled A, C, W and Y.

Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine protects against another bacterial strain and is recommended for kids with certain chronic health conditions that make them more vulnerable or anyone 16-18 whose pediatrician recommends it.

their childhood vaccine starts to wear off around age 11, making the booster essential. Teens can easily spread the disease, including to infants, who are at even more risk.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

The HPV vaccine prevents genital warts and works well to protect against strains of the virus that cause more than 90% of six types of cancer, including cervical cancer, penile and anal cancers, and cancers of the mouth and throat.

Vaccinating kids ages 9-12 allows them to build strong immunity against the virus before exposure. If they don’t get the first dose until age 15, they’ll need three doses.

Influenza

The flu is unpredictable and there is no way to know if your child will have mild illness and miss just a few days of school or if they will get seriously ill and need hospital care.

At the Hunt United Methodist Church, now serving as a local relief hub, one moment captured the spirit of the mission. Susie, a volunteer coordinator at the church, recalled how a young mother approached her looking for baby milk. “I looked around and we had none,” she said. “Then, just two minutes later, the United Sikhs team walked in—carrying exactly what we needed. Milk.”

Susie called it “truly amazing” — a moment of need met with near-miraculous timing.

For Gurvinder Singh, United Sikhs’ International Humanitarian Aid Director, this kind of story is not uncommon. “We don’t always know what people will need until we arrive,” he said. “But somehow, the right things find their way into our hands. That’s the spirit of seva — selfless service.”

Since arriving in the region, the United Sikhs team has distributed aid at shelters, veteran camps, Red Cross stations, and churches throughout Kerr County and nearby communities. With each delivery, they’ve offered not just supplies, but also the presence of a helping hand at the exact moment it was needed most. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Meningococcal ABCWY (MenABCWY) combines protection from MenACWY and MenB. If both vaccines are recommended at the same visit, it can be used instead of separate injections.

Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis

At 11 or 12, pediatricians give the Tdap booster to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). It’s a slightly different version of a vaccine your child received as a baby (DTaP), with lower doses of the diphtheria and pertussis vaccines. After this, they’ll need additional boosters every 10 years.

Tetanus is caused by exposure to naturally occurring bacteria in soil or dust through a break in the skin. Tetanus produces a toxin that causes painful muscle contractions. Also known as lockjaw, it can cause neck and jaw muscles to lock, making it hard to open the mouth or swallow.

Diphtheria causes serious throat infection, breathing problems and heart failure. The vaccine is a lifesaver. Before it existed, diphtheria killed 1 of every 5 kids infected.

Pertussis can cause a cough that won’t go away and sometimes vomiting or trouble breathing. The protection your teen got from

But be wary. U.S. flu deaths in children broke records during the 2024-25 season, with at least 216 deaths. The AAP recommends flu shots annually for everyone 6 months and older to prevent severe illness.

COVID-19

Millions globally, including teenagers and children, have received the COVID-19 vaccine. If your child has never had this vaccine, their immune system won’t be ready to recognize and resist the virus that can lead to long-term problems associated with COVID.

Behind on Other Vaccines?

Delaying vaccines leaves your child vulnerable to preventable diseases. The AAP vaccine schedule is designed to prepare their body to resist contagious diseases as early and fully as possible. This keeps them healthy and active, instead of missing out while they’re sick.

Learn more about vaccines at www.HealthyChildren.org and catch up on those your child missed. Most vaccines can be given at the same time as others.

“Kids and teen’s bodies can handle multiple vaccines in a short time because their immune system is in constant learning mode. Vaccines help kids stay healthy by keeping them ahead of serious, preventable diseases,” says Dr. Fenton. (StatePoint)

Empowering Contraceptive Choices

Modern contraception has transformed women’s lives over the past century.

Since the birth control pill was introduced nearly 60 years ago, global fertility rates have dropped from 5 children per woman in 1960 to 2.5 today, driven by medical innovation and the growing empowerment of women, according to research published in “Science.”

The non-profit Power to Decide reports that despite progress, more than 19 million women in the United States live in “contraceptive deserts,” where provider shortages, restrictive policies and cost barriers limit access.

Transportation challenges, long wait times and clinic shortages can also prevent patients from receiving necessary care.

At a recent roundtable sponsored by the Rowan Foundation and hosted by the University of Houston Student Health Center, clinicians and women’s health experts emphasized that contraceptive care must be personalized to each woman’s individual goals, lifestyle and health needs.

“Genuine reproductive autonomy

starts with informed and supported contraceptive choices,” says Vian Nguyen, MD, F.A.C.O.G., medical advisor to the Rowan Foundation and a panelist at the roundtable.

“This involves having access to reliable information, receiving respectful counseling, and having the ability to select a contraceptive method that aligns with a woman’s individual preferences and health requirements.”

Education is Essential

Panelists emphasized that access

begins with education.

Only 20 states require contraception to be included in sex education, and even fewer mandate medically accurate information be taught, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Myths and misinformation flourish in that void, often disseminated through social media or peer discussions.

Clinicians are encouraged to create open, judgment-free spaces for honest discussions with their pa-

tients.

When young women feel empowered to ask questions, they are more likely to make informed and confident decisions.

Understanding Risks and Side Effects

A critical aspect of personalized care is helping patients understand side effect variability.

Weight gain often concerns young women, especially on social media, but not all birth control methods cause it.

For example, one person may experience headaches or water retention from a contraceptive pill, while another may not. This highlights the individualized nature of contraceptive communication.

Funeral Directors Share What Truly Comforts The Grieving

When someone you know loses a loved one, finding the right words can be difficult. A bit of compassion goes a long way and knowing the right thing to say matters.

According to funeral professionals who guide families through loss daily, the approach matters. “Just know we are here to walk with you every step,” funeral director Randy Anderson said.

Here are five thoughtful things to say when someone dies, based on insights from spokespeople from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), which represents funeral directors who support families every day during the grieving process:

1. “I’m here for you.”

Offering your presence, whether to listen, help with daily tasks or just sit quietly, lets the grieving person know they are not alone.

“I let them know I am here to listen,” funeral director Allyse Worland said. “Do more listening and less talking. I am still here for you, even after the service.”

2. “Tell me about your loved one.” Inviting stories and memories honors the deceased and helps keep their spirit alive.

“Tell me about your loved one,” funeral director Stephen Kemp said. “What made them special? Positive stories are always helpful.”

3. “What can I do to support you right now?”

Rather than a vague “let me know if you need anything,” this question encourages specific offers of help, which can be easier for someone in grief to accept.

“Offer actual support instead of just saying ‘sorry’ or ‘thoughts and prayers,’” Worland said.

4. “It’s OK to feel whatever you’re feeling.”

Grief is a uniquely personal experience that can evoke a range of emotions. Validating those feelings removes pressure to “be strong” or “move on” too quickly.

“Sometimes you don’t have to say anything,” funeral director Cam-

Common side effects, such as weight gain, are well-known. However, serious risks, including high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a limb), and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in a lung), are largely overlooked, creating a substantial information gap. Addressing these risks requires sensitivity and clarity.

Improving Satisfaction Through Shared Decision-Making

When patients feel heard and supported, they are more likely to be satisfied with their choices. Shared decision-making and clear communication build trust and improve outcomes.

Providers should guide patients through options -- short-term, long-acting, hormonal and nonhormonal -- focusing on the individual’s health history and preferences.

The roundtable proceedings can be viewed at www.alexrowanfoundation.org/roundtable.

Call to Action

The roundtable concluded with a clear call to action:

• Providers should audit their counseling to ensure it includes all contraceptive methods, including nonhormonal options, and offer patient-centered care tailored to individuals.

elia Clarke said. “A hug or touch says it all.

5. “I don’t have the words, but I am here for you.”

Sometimes, words fall short. Acknowledging this honestly while offering your presence can be deeply comforting.

“Your presence and ear are what they need,” Kemp said.

Funeral directors caution against common but unhelpful phrases such as “They’re in a better place” or “At least they lived a long life,” which may unintentionally minimize the bereaved’s pain. (Continued On Page 23)

• Schools should implement evidence-based sex education that includes information about contraceptive options.

• Policymakers should prioritize short-term funding to expand telehealth and mobile clinic access in underserved areas, as well as support pilot programs that test new decision-support tools for personalized contraceptive counseling.

• Patients and advocates should seek accurate information and use contraceptive decision aids to find methods that align with their needs. (StatePoint)

Porch Perfect: Easy Upgrades That Make A Lasting First Impression

Whether you’re hosting neighbors for sweet tea or just enjoying the breeze after a long day, the front porch is having a moment.

No longer just a pass-through space, it’s become an extension of the home’s personality—part welcome mat, part curb appeal showpiece.

The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to breathe new life into your front entry.

A few smart updates can add style, comfort and even a layer of security.

Start With the Hardware

Door hardware may not seem like the most exciting element to refresh—but it’s exactly where trends are starting to shift.

Traditionally, storm and screen door hardware has stayed relatively static in style and finish.

But that’s starting to change. Companies like Wright Products are bringing a more design-forward approach to this category, offering hardware that blends security with aesthetics.

This new wave of entry hardware features cleaner silhouettes, decorative backplates, and more modern finishes that complement today’s popular exterior palettes.

It’s a subtle upgrade that makes a major visual difference—especially when paired with a freshly painted front door or a new doormat.

Layer in Light and Texture

String lights, lanterns or updated sconces can turn your porch into a cozy, evening-ready space.

Add a weather-resistant rug, a few patterned cushions, and a pair of planters flanking the doorway to create a polished, welcoming feel.

Look for low-maintenance greenery or seasonal florals to liven things up without adding to your weekend to-do list

Get Smart About Security

Convenience and security can also get a front porch facelift. Adding an electronic deadbolt is one of the simplest ways to upgrade your door’s function without replacing the entire entry system.

New models—like those from Brinks—offer features such as fingerprint access, keypad entry and even smartphone control. No more fumbling for keys when your hands are full of groceries or beach bags.

Finishing Touches

Think of your porch as the cover of your home’s story. A fresh wreath, a bench or rocking chair, and maybe a little wind chime go a long way toward setting the tone.

And if your mailbox or house numbers are looking dated, this is a great time to swap those, too.

The front porch may be the first thing guests see, but with a few thoughtful updates, it might just become your favorite space, too.

Understanding And Managing Menopause Symptoms

Hot flashes may be one of the better-known indicators of menopause, but women may experience a wide range of symptoms as they enter this stage of life.

However, treatment options can ease, if not alleviate, most of these experiences.

Menopause signals the end of a woman’s reproductive years, beginning as early as their 30s for some women.

This natural process results in the stop of menstruation with the shifting hormones also creating a list of physical and emotional symptoms.

Perimenopause, which commonly occurs in the mid-to-late-40s, lasts 4-8 years.

This transitional stage is characterized by fluctuating ovarian activity, which can alter the frequency and duration of a woman’s period and disrupt estrogen production.

Menopause is officially reached when the ovaries cease ovulation and a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Despite increasing conversations among peers, many women experience disruptive symptoms and have difficulty managing them, according to a Nielsen IQ Aging America Forecast.

Additionally, 90% of women reported never having been taught about menopause in school, according to a study published in “Post Reproductive Health.”

Uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and weight gain often begin during perimenopause and may continue through post-menopause - in some cases, for the rest of a woman’s life.

The intensity and duration of these symptoms can vary from person to person.

With 45% of women in the U.S. currently experiencing some phase of menopause, per the Nielsen IQ Aging America Forecast, K-Y, is on a mission to provide support and relief where it’s most needed and empower women to take control of their menopause journey at every stage - because if you know, you know.

Beat the Heat and Soothe Hot Flashes

Prevention is one of the most effective ways to manage hot flashes - those sudden waves of heat that often affect a woman’s chest, neck and face, sometimes accompanied by sweating and redness.

Identifying and avoiding common triggers such as caffeine, alcohol or spicy foods can make a difference.

Calming exercises, like slow, steady breathing, can help bring a hot flash under control as can a cold drink, cool shower or portable fan.

Deal with Dryness to Restore Moisture

Hormonal changes can cause vaginal dryness, often leading to discomfort. To alleviate this discomfort, try a non-prescription product designed to add moisture, such as K-Y Liquibeads.

Uniquely formulated and hormone-free, the vaginal moisturizer is designed to provide long-lasting relief to discomfort, caused by menopause and everyday activi-

ties, for up to three days.

Master Moods Caused by Hormone Changes

Fluctuating hormones during menopause can impact your mood, leading to unexpected emotional highs and lows.

While some doctors prescribe hormone treatment, such as birth control pills, to help regulate hormone swings, you can also manage mood issues by doing activities that bring

joy and minimize stress.

Mindful exercise, like yoga or tai chi, can help manage your shifting moods.

Ease Your Headaches to Restore Your Day

If you’re susceptible to migraines, it’s important to know menopause can exacerbate them or even be the trigger that causes migraines to start. (Continued On Page 19)

Understanding And Managing Menopause Symptoms

(Contnued From Page 18)

Knowing what sets off your migraines may be your best line of defense.

However, if you’re unable to relieve the discomfort through selfcare measures, consult with your doctor to adjust your current treatment plan or create a new one.

Nurture Lost Desire and Reconnect with Intimacy

As your libido fades, you may need to make a more conscious effort to maintain an active sex life.

While factors like poor sleep, stress and depression can lower your interest in intimacy, maintaining regular sexual activity can sup-

port overall health, including minimizing problems with dryness and improving your mood.

If comfort is a concern, a product

like K-Y Ultragel lubricant can help supplement your natural lubrication.

The unique water-based formula

is non-sticky and non-greasy, so the natural feeling of enhanced intimacy is all you and your partner experience.

Quiet the Heat to Sleep in Comfort Night sweats - hot flashes that happen at night - can be managed by wearing cool, cotton pajamas and using layers of covers you can easily shed.

You may find extra relief from sleeping with a fan or using cooling pillows and sheets.

Keeping your room cool and dark can also help promote more comfortable, uninterrupted rest.

Clear Acne and Take Control with Confidence

Pimples aren’t just for teens; they often make a return appearance as you’re walking through this new transitional stage of life.

However, you’re likely more confident and better equipped to care for your skin this time around.

To help prevent flare-ups, avoid oily products like sunscreens and cosmetics.

Stick with oil-free options designed to keep pores clear. If necessary, talk with a dermatologist about a program designed for your unique skin care needs.

How To Make The Most Of Summer Family Vacations

As the days stretch longer, summer has a way of calling families to pack up and go, whether it’s for a weekend getaway, family reunion, road trip or one more beach escape.

To make the most of every moment, your accommodations matter. From convenient locations to family-friendly amenities, the right setup can ease the stress of travel.

These tips can make your adventures more enjoyable, whether you’re hitting the road or catching a cross-country flight.

Pick a Place Where You Can Spread Out

Accommodations with spacious sleeping and living areas give everyone the room they need to recharge.

* Beds for Everyone: Look for hotels that offer generous family suites, some with over 700 square feet or those that feature clever configurations like bunk beds, giving everyone dedicated space to unwind. If you’re bringing the dog, ensure your accommodations are pet-friendly, too.

* Road Trip Ready: For families planning a road trip with multiple

destinations, consider staying at hotels strategically located along popular routes for comfort and consistency. Some may offer distinct family accommodations, like the casitas unique to Hyatt Place Moab in Utah, featuring multiple beds, a living area, kitchenette, patio and more. The outdoor pool is also perfect for cooling down after a day of hiking.

Hotels with Amenities Parents Actually Need

Family travel can be full of unforgettable moments, but it also comes with a lot of logistics. From hungry kids to forgotten toothbrushes, choosing a hotel with

practical amenities can make all the difference.

* Rooms with Kitchens: Guestrooms with in-room kitchenettes are ideal for prepping lunches or reheating leftovers, which can help save money. Even on an international adventure, hotels like Hyatt House Kanazawa in Japan offers fully equipped kitchens, including a refrigerator, microwave, stovetop, sink and dishwasher, making it easy to enjoy a little home-cooked convenience abroad.

* Family-Friendly Amenities: Whether taking a weekend trip or exploring a new country, look for hotels that make it easier to enter-

tain. Consider amenities such as outdoor pools and hotels situated by popular attractions to keep the family engaged, like Hyatt Place Los Cabos. For longer stays, guest laundry facilities can help families pack lighter and stay fresh. Travelers can also consider dual-branded developments that combine the best of both worlds, like Hyatt Place LAX/Century Blvd and Hyatt House LAX/Century Blvd, offering flexible room options for multi-generational families and shared amenities under one roof.

* The Essentials: Packing for the family often means something gets left behind. Find hotels that offer programs that help fill in the gaps, whether it’s a phone charger, toothbrush or other necessities, available to buy, borrow or enjoy for free.

* Dining Options: Dining out can be costly and time-consuming. For families wanting to enjoy local flavors while keeping things simple, find hotels that offer daily breakfast and grab-and-go markets, like Hyatt House and Hyatt Place hotels.

Many also feature lobby bars, and select locations offer signature restaurants such as Azotea Roof Top & Hacienda in the United Kingdom

or rooftop bars like Pesca Rooftop in Florida, to keep everyone fueled without leaving the hotel.

Book Smarter for Longer Stays

Find hotels that reward you for your stay. For example, World of Hyatt members can earn up to 16,000 Bonus Points through an offer at participating Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels when members register and then complete stays by Sept. 7.

* Stay three nights to earn 3,000 Bonus Points

* Stay five nights to earn an additional 5,000 Bonus Points for 8,000 total Bonus Points

* Stay eight nights to earn an additional 8,000 Bonus Points for 16,000 total Bonus Points

That’s extra value for taking your trip. With stays starting at 3,500 points per night off peak, a little can go a long way, especially if you’re planning more than one adventure.

Travel smarter and visit Hyatt.com to discover how to do more and enjoy what matters most: time together. (Family Features)

How To Clean Your Air Conditioner Filter

Air conditioners play a crucial role in maintaining indoor air quality by filtering out particulates such as dust, pollen and other pollutants. Over time, their filters can become clogged, reducing your AC’s effectiveness and allowing contaminants to circulate throughout your home.

Regularly cleaning (or replacing) your air conditioner’s filters ensures your system operates efficiently, providing you with cleaner, healthier air while reducing energy consumption, lowering utility bills and extending the lifespan of your air conditioner.

If you find your home isn’t cooling off as quickly as it used to, it could be due to a clogged filter reducing airflow from your vents. Similarly, increased dust accumulation around your home or more frequent allergy symptoms may be signs to check your filter.

Following this simple cleaning routine can help ensure your home remains a sanctuary of clean, fresh air:

1. Turn off the HVAC system.

2. Locate your unit’s filter compartment, which is typically found behind the return air grille or inside the air handler unit.

3. Carefully remove the filters.

4. Gently vacuum off loose debris.

5. Wash filter with a mixture of water and mild detergent. (Avoid using harsh chemicals or high-pressure water, which can damage the filter.)

6. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely as moisture can lead to mold growth within the HVAC system.

7. Re-install filter and secure cover or grille.

8. Turn HVAC system back on and enjoy the improved air quality and efficiency.

A Guide To Summer Pool Maintenance

During the summer months, when the pool is in constant use, daily skimming, weekly brushing and regular chemical checks are essential to maintaining pristine, shimmering water all season long.

Clean the Filter

The filtration system is the heart of your pool, keeping water clean by removing debris and contaminants.

Whether your pool uses a sand, cartridge or diatomaceous earth (DE) filter, regular backwashing or cleaning can help defend

against murky water and algae growth.

Regularly Skim and Brush

Using a longhandled skimmer net, take a few minutes each day to skim the surface of your pool to remove leaves, bugs and other debris, which can reduce the load on your filtration system.

Equally important is brushing the pool walls and floor (particularly corners and steps) weekly as algae and dirt can cling to surfaces, making the water cloudy and steps slippery.

Balance Chemicals

Using a pool test kit or digital tester, regularly check chlorine, pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness levels to keep the water clear and safe for swimming.

Chlorine, which kills bacteria and algae, should be between 1-3 parts per million (ppm) with a pH (potential of hydrogen) level between 7.2-7.6 while alkalinity is recommended between 80-120 ppm and calcium hardness, which prevents corrosion and scaling, between 200-400 ppm.

Fight Algae and Bacteria Buildup

Algae and bacteria can quickly turn a pristine pool into a green,

murky mess.

If you notice green, yellow or black spots on your pool’s surface, algae are likely starting to grow. Shock treatments, which involve adding a high dose of chlorine to the water, are effective against algae and bacteria.

Follow the package instructions and run your filtration system continuously for 24 hours. For persistent problems, consider using an algaecide.

Simple Yoga, Big Benefits: 5 Asanas For Home

Yoga offers numerous benefits for physical, mental, and emotional well-being, enhancing flexibility, strength, and balance. Its asanas (postures) improve joint mobility, muscle tone, and overall body strength, while also aiding posture and alignment. Regular yoga practice can lead to better sleep, promote positive thinking, reduce stress, and foster heightened self-awareness. Here are five yoga asanas you can easily practice at home to live a healthier and more pleasant life:

Sukhasana

Sukhasana, also known as Easy Pose or the “pose of comfort,” is a fundamental

Anulom Vilom

seated yoga posture. This simple cross-legged pose provides a stable and relaxed foundation for meditation, breathing exercises, and gentle stretching. It can help calm the mind, alleviate lower back discomfort and tightness, and improve overall posture.

Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) is a powerful pranayama technique that helps balance the flow of energy in the body. Regular practice can improve breathing efficiency, increase oxygen intake, and aid in the removal of toxins. It also promotes a state of relaxation, mental clarity, and focus, and can be particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma.

Shavasana

Shavasana, or Corpse Pose, is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating yoga asana. It involves

Austin Blasters Capture Yet Another Championship Title

(Continued From Page 01) Led by captain Rishi Pogaru, the Blasters delivered an emphatic win in the final game, showcasing tactical discipline, sharp fielding, explosive batting, and dominant bowling. Pogaru’s leadership and on-field composure proved instrumental in guiding the team to a commanding performance from start to finish.

Facing top talent from across the country, the Blasters maintained a clinical edge throughout the tournament. In the last game against ASG Spartans, they displayed exceptional poise and teamwork, with standout contributions from both their pace attack and toporder batters.

“Our players showed incredible focus and discipline under pressure throughout the tournament,” said founder and head coach Alok Singh. “This win reflects months of hard work, and we’re proud of how they carried themselves on and off the field.”

The championship adds to an impressive string of victories for the Blasters, who have become known for their balanced squad, strategic gameplay, and clinical execution.

lying flat on your back with arms relaxed at your sides, palms facing up, and legs comfortably spread apart. The primary aim of this pose is to achieve complete physical and mental relaxation, reducing stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Practitioners are encouraged to fully release and surrender, allowing ample time to experience the full benefits of Shavasana.

Balasana

Balasana, also known as Child’s Pose, is a gentle resting posture that offers numerous benefits for both body and mind. By sitting back on the heels with knees wide apart, Balasana gently stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles. It helps to release tightness in these areas, especially after prolonged sitting or

physical activity. This pose can be practiced at any point during a yoga session to pause, recharge, and regain energy.

Bhujangasana

Bhujangasana, or Cobra Pose, is an excellent reclined backbend that significantly improves the flexibility and strength of the spine. It strengthens and stretches the muscles along your spine and increases blood flow, particularly to the reproductive organs and the spinal area. Incorporating these simple asanas into your daily routine can contribute significantly to a more balanced and healthier lifestyle. (ANI)

SONA RANGAPRAVESHA

(Continued From Page 01)

On July 26th, these proud parents, with the help of the community, transformed Brentwood Christian School to host a brilliant showcase of South Indian Culture.

Sona’s Bharatnatyam journey began at the tender age of 5 under the guidance of the renowned Mrs. Sunitha Yogananda. Through her, Sona immersed herself in the classical art form, embracing the living embodiment of South India’s rich cultural heritage expressed through intricate movements, rhythm, and deep human emotions.

For over a decade now, she has devoted herself to mastering this art form and witnessing her growth through this art form has been an extreme privilege. After a decade under Ms. Sunitha, she was deemed ready for the grand milestone of Rangapravesha celebrating her first public performance as a professional in the classical arts.

With many players rising through local developmental programs offered by WCI Academy, the team has become a symbol of Austin’s growing cricket culture.

Parents, fans, and community leaders praised the team’s performance and sportsmanship. “They’ve made us proud, not just by winning, but by the way they represent the team,” said one proud parent. As youth cricket continues to gain momentum in the United States, the Austin Blasters stand at the forefront—demonstrating that with the right blend of talent, coaching, and commitment, the future of American cricket is bright.

About Austin Blasters

The Austin Blasters is a professional cricket team developed and operated by WCI Academy headquartered in Austin, TX. Its youth teams train rigorously under high-performance programs, preparing year-round for national-level cricket tournaments across the United States. WCI (wciacademy.com) is committed to developing young talent, fostering discipline, and raising the standard of youth cricket in America.

As she performed her second piece out of the nine-item repertoire, I found myself utterly mesmerized — watching in awe as she moved with remarkable stamina, precision, and grace leaving all of us in the audience with jaws dropped and tears in our eyes.

Sona truly touched the hearts of everyone in the audience with her performance of the beloved Devaranama “Jagadodharana.” This timeless composition, with its simple yet profoundly emotional lyrics, beautifully captures a mother’s tender sentiments toward her divine child. Through graceful movements and expressive abhinaya (facial expressions), Sona brought the story to life with remarkable sensitivity. Her choreography was not only technically sound but also emotionally moving, allowing the audience to feel the devotion and love woven into every gesture.

More than the performance itself, the stage she commanded elevated the viewing experience. The Rao Family had expertly crafted a backdrop that showcased Sona’s talents, while paying homage to our Carnatic roots. Nearly 300 hearts gathered to celebrate this delightful expression of India’s classical heritage, with many traversing the globe simply to be part of this unforgettable evening.

Sona’s performance was also elevated by a group of talented vocalists and musicians, whose live accompaniment seamlessly blended with Sona’s brilliance to craft a cultural celebration that transported the audience to a distant time.

To conclude the evening, heartfelt speeches were shared by parents, well-wishers, and friends, adding a personal and emotional touch to the celebration. And as I’ve mentioned in a previous article, no gathering of ours is complete without a delicious meal with a plethora of dishes bringing the community together in a shared joy.

Little Things Make A Big Difference For Seniors – Do It!

When was the last time you sat down with your grandparents without checking your phone? Life gets busy. Meetings, deadlines, errands, traffic.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, we forget the presence of our aging parents or grandparents at home. They may not ask for much, but deep down, they hope for one thing: your time.

They won’t always say it out loud, but loneliness is real. While we’re busy running around, they’re often waiting either for a phone call, a chat over tea, or just a smile. Hence, here are five simple ways to remind them they matter every single day.

Give them your undivided time

It could be just 15 minutes a day. Sit with them. No phones, no distractions. Let them talk about their day, their memories, even the

same stories you’ve heard before. The joy of being heard is priceless to them.

Teach them something new

Maybe it’s how to use WhatsApp, play music on YouTube, or send an emoji. It’s not about the app; it’s about making them feel included in today’s world. You’ll be sur-

prised how eager they are to learn.

Let them be a part of your routine

Take them along for a walk, invite them while cooking, or ask for their opinion on a new outfit. Inclusion makes them feel valued and involved, not just observers in your life.

Celebrate small occasions

Not every day has to be a birthday. Celebrate their favorite festival, the day they retired, or the anniversary of a special memory. These thoughtful moments tell them you care.

Write them a note

A handwritten letter, a sticky note saying “Thank you for the tea,” or a framed photo with a message. These gestures stay with them long after the moment has passed. (ANI) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

The Legend Lives On: Guru Dutt’s Films Set For Theatrical Re-release

India-West Staff Reporter

MUMBAI –

This August, as India celebrates the birth centenary of Guru Dutt, a new generation of movie lovers will have a rare chance to immerse themselves in the genius of a filmmaker who remains one of Indian cinema’s most profound and enduring legends.

Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, in association with NFDCNFAI, is presenting a nationwide theatrical retrospective of his most iconic films, meticulously restored in 4K for today’s audiences.

nacle of international racing.

It will highlight how he overcame challenges related to class, race, and numerous crashes to reach Formula One.

“Narain Karthikeyan’s journey isn’t just about racing. It’s about belief — in yourself, your country, and a dream no one else can see. That’s what drew me to this story,” stated Narayanan.

The Tamil-language feature film is currently under development at India’s Blue Marble Films.

It will be produced by Faraz Ahsan, Vivek Rangachari, and Pratik Maitra.

The screenplay is penned by Shalini Usha Devi, who also wrote the critically acclaimed “Soorarai Pottru,” as reported by Variety.com.

Ahsan commented, “India has some of the most dangerous roads in the world — just surviving traffic here takes skill.

But what fascinated me was how someone like NK went from navigating those roads to racing at 365 km/h — a speed faster than a commercial aircraft at takeoff.”

He added, “I’ve been after Narain for years to secure the rights, and after a few honest conversations and the right team coming together, he finally said yes.”

The story begins with a young Narain sitting on his father’s lap, gripping the steering wheel of an old rally car.

vered.

After excelling in his 10th-grade exams, he convinced his parents to allow him to return to racing.

His father then modified a Maruti 800 into a training car and became his coach, Variety.com reported.

At fifteen, Narain entered his first Formula Maruti race at the Sriperumbudur circuit in Chennai in 1992.

Starting 17th on the grid, he initially fell to last place but rallied impressively in the final 10 laps, overtaking 16 racers to finish third. This performance marked the arrival of India’s motorsport underdog.

To prove himself internationally, Narain attended the prestigious Winfield Racing School in France, an institution that has trained over 30 F1 drivers.

As the sole Indian and only “brown-skinned driver” among 20 white students from elite families, he faced racism and bullying.

However, during his final test in wet conditions, he recorded the second-fastest lap time, earning recognition as “something special.”

The film will showcase both his triumphs, including wins in Formula Asia, British Formula Ford, and Formula 3, as well as his significant setback at the Macau Grand Prix. In that race, he crashed at 270 km/h on the final lap while leading by six seconds.

From August 8-10, over 250 cinemas across India will screen newly restored versions of Guru Dutt’s masterpieces, including Pyaasa, Aar Paar, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Mr. & Mrs. 55, and Baaz.

This curated event is a direct invitation to cinephiles, film students, and new-age viewers to experience the poetic depth, visual brilliance, and timeless storytelling that defines Guru Dutt’s unparalleled legacy.

Guru Dutt, born Vasanth Kumar Shivshankar Padukone on July 9, 1925, was a director, actor, producer, choreographer, and writer

whose artistry, marked by distinctive close-up shots, evocative lighting, and a profound exploration of melancholia, set him apart.

His films often delved into the inner turmoil of individuals navigating a rapidly changing post-independence India, exploring themes of artistic struggle, societal disillusionment, unrequited love, and the chasm between dreams and reality.

(Continued On Page 27)

His father, a former national rally champion, had filled their home with engines, tools, and unrealized dreams.

At five, Narain received a homemade go-kart, often crashing and spinning across the driveway, particularly enjoying wet conditions that made racing more challenging.

Despite his parents’ concerns about the expensive nature of the sport and the lack of government support, Narain’s passion never wa-

The narrative also includes his romantic subplot, depicting how he met his future wife in an elevator –a woman who knew nothing about racing but believed in him unconditionally.

His ultimate redemption came when he returned to Macau, trained harder by driving dangerous mountain hairpins in Ooty, and finally won the race that had once shattered his dreams. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

The Legend Lives On: Guru Dutt’s Films Set For Theatrical Re-release

(Continued From Page 26)

Sushilkumar Agrawal, CEO, Ultra Media and Entertainment Group, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “Guru Dutt’s films are timeless masterpieces that have influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike. This initiative is not just a tribute to Guru Dutt’s legacy, but also a significant cultural movement to bridge generations through cinema.”

Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, NFDC, emphasized the preservation aspect: “Restoring Guru Dutt’s films goes far beyond reviving old reels. It’s about safeguarding a priceless legacy that defines the soul of Indian cinema. These films are restored as part of the National Film Heritage Mission, an initiative by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, ensuring that Guru Dutt’s timeless vision continues to resonate with audiences, now and for years to come.”

The selected films showcase the breadth of Guru Dutt’s vision. Pyaasa (1957), often hailed as one of the greatest Indian films ever made, portrays a disillusioned

poet’s struggle in a materialistic world, with a poetic depth that remains deeply moving. Aar Paar (1954) is a stylish Bombay noir, blending romance, suspense, and unforgettable songs. Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), set against Lucknow’s Nawabi culture, is a poignant story of friendship and love, beautifully captured with a classic title song. Mr. & Mrs. 55 (1955) offers a breezy romantic comedy cleverly critiquing modernity and gender roles. Finally, Baaz (1953), Guru Dutt’s directorial debut, is a period swashbuckler that hinted at his dramatic flair.

Guru Dutt’s personal life, often marked by introspection and a deep

sense of melancholy, frequently found its way onto the screen. His protagonists, often dreamers and loners, mirrored his own emotional battles and sense of alienation from a world that sometimes struggled to understand his profound artistic vision.

The box office failure of his intensely personal film Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), considered India’s first CinemaScope film, was a significant blow that deeply affected him.

Despite his tragically short life, ending at the age of 39 in 1964, Guru Dutt left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. His mastery of cinematic elements—from chiaroscuro lighting and intricate miseen-scène to his unique approach to music integration—elevated commercial Hindi cinema to an art form. His films were not merely stories; they were emotional outpourings, revealing aspects of his own soul and giving voice to universal human struggles (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
