Caregivers Face Financial, Emotional And Career Impacts, Study Finds

Two in five U.S. adults identify as family caregivers, but there is a lack of support for them nationwide, according to new research from Edward Jones in partnership with Morning Consult and Age Wave. With 46% of Americans expected to become caregivers in the future, this research sought to better understand their concerns and challenges, and uncover ways to support them.

How caregivers are navigating their finances, emotions and careers

Top financial concerns caregivers face include rising costs and inflation (56%) and inadequate retirement savings (42%). In fact, 95% of caregivers have some level of financial concern for their retirement, and 51% must cut back on personal spending because of their caregiving responsibilities, according to the study. In addition to financial challenges, many caregivers cited caregiving as a significant emotional responsibility, leaving them stressed, burned out, and unable to prioritize their own health.

Most caregivers (72%) are willing to sacrifice their own financial security to ensure proper care for their loved ones. This sometimes includes such measures as stepping away from their jobs entirely, reducing work hours, taking on debt and dipping into their own retirement savings.

Despite these challenges, 80% of caregivers say their role has strengthened their relationships with loved ones, with the large majority reporting feelings of personal fulfillment and gratitude from those in their care.

“Caregivers often bear great financial burdens and sacrifice their own well-being to care for children and elder family members,” says Ken Dychtwald, founder and CEO of Age Wave. “The vital role of family caregivers in our care systems and society demands greater recognition, resources and relief, especially as America’s population continues to live longer with more chronic conditions and the need for caregiving grows.”

Support, education and resources

for caregivers is crucial. Fiftyseven percent have not sought professional advice for caregivingrelated financial guidance, yet 93% of those who work with a financial advisor report feeling more confident about their financial future.

“Financial advisors are an important element of a caregiver’s support system,” says Ken Cella, principal and head of external affairs at Edward Jones. “They can give caregivers a complete picture of their finances, enabling them to navigate the complex realities of care while planning for multiple long-term financial and life goals.”

Policies that help caregivers have

bipartisan support

Currently, 68% of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, say the public sector is not doing

enough to support caregivers, a sentiment felt more strongly among those caring for elderly adults and special-needs adults. The research found that the majority of Americans support enacting federal legislation that would aid caregivers, such as expanded retirement account contributions for caregivers, and additional “catch-up” contributions for caregivers.

Additionally, 74% say they believe employers should offer benefits such as financial support or flexible work arrangements for employees with caregiving responsibilities, reflecting a growing demand for supportive workplace policies.

“In the face of rising living costs and a looming retirement crisis, supporting caregivers through national and employment policies is an investment in economic stability, public health and the well-being of both caregivers and those they are caring for,” says Cella. “As a firm, we are proud to advocate on behalf of caregivers by backing policies that will build lasting financial strength for our clients, colleagues, communities and society.”

Edward Jones supports the Improving Retirement Security for Family Caregivers Act and the Catching Up Family Caregivers Act. According to advocates, these bills would build on the success of the SECURE 2.0 Act by providing additional savings opportunities for caregivers. Amid Volatility, Americans Are Living Financially Fulfilled Lives

Three quarters of Americans (74%) are optimistic about their financial futures despite recent market volatility and uncertainty, according to new research. Capturing the goals, challenges and feelings of North Americans regarding their finances, research for “The Pulse of North America” report was conducted by Edward Jones and Cerulli Associates during April’s increased market volatility. An encouraging 79% of respondents indicated they are on track to achieve or have already achieved a financially fulfilled life.

“Sentiment from our own clients confirms this,” said David Gunn, principal, head of U.S. and Canada Business Units at Edward Jones. “In the half a million conversations our financial advisors have had with clients in the past five months, only a quarter of our clients highlight financial stress. This reflects the power of deep, personal, trusting relationships and holistic financial advice.”

Recent volatility impacts, but does not derail, financial fulfillment

Despite 49% of respondents indicating that inflation is a source of financial stress, Americans remain steadfast in the pursuit of financial fulfillment. They define fulfillment as having the freedom to pursue their passions (46%), make a better life for themselves and their families (42%), and have security and protection from unforeseen events (41%).

To become more financially fulfilled, Americans are most willing to change their discretionary spending habits (45%), pay off their debt (33%), and improve their financial literacy (28%). This flexibility will help them tackle potential obstacles, including rising living costs (59%), unexpected financial setbacks (35%), and insufficient income or savings (27%). Nearly two-thirds of respondents (63%) indicated they would need to earn

a $150,000-plus salary annually to achieve financial freedom.

Americans report optimism and progress relative to personal benchmarks

When it comes to tracking financial progress, only 18% of Americans benchmark themselves against their own goals and plans rather than those of others, while 33% primarily compare themselves to their peers, 22% to their significant others, and 19% to their colleagues. Respondents indicated that they are tracking confidently against financial and other life goals, reporting that they are on par with or ahead of others when it comes to specific objectives, such as achieving financial stability (88%), travel goals (84%), financial literacy (83%), saving for retirement (80%), and achieving homeownership (78%).

“Even with heightened market vol-

atility and economic uncertainty, American investors have stayed the course with their portfolios and long-term plans,” added Gunn.

“They are making meaningful progress by keeping the future in mind, while expressing willingness to pivot in real time with the help of a financial professional.”

The role of financial advisors in pursuing financial fulfilment

While 57% of DIY investors have a financial plan, this number increases to 77% for Americans who

regularly engage with a financial advisor.

Those working with a financial advisor are doing so to manage financial risk (28%), seek a second opinion on financial decisions (26%), or based on recommendations from family members or other professionals (25%). Americans who regularly work with a financial advisor are more likely to feel optimistic about their financial future than those who manage their finances on their own (79% vs 71% respectively).

“One of the twentieth century’s most remarkable spiritual figures — Paramahansa Yogananda — offers us a vision of world unity through yoga because it gives us the experience of a love that is divine — a love that transcends the limitations of all man-made boundaries,” says Brother Keshavananda. “Meditation connects us with our own divinity so we can

express that divinity through our humanity.”

“By using Yogananda’s teachings, each one of us has the potential to transcend both our self-limited thinking and these current times. We can all live a higher age life now.”

Hosted by the Santiago Center of Self-Realization Fellowship, the evening will include a guided meditation for attendees to experience the benefits of meditation for themselves.

“Quiet the outgoing mental restlessness and turn the mind within,” said Yogananda. “Harmonize your thoughts and desires with the all-fulfilling realities you already possess in your soul. Then you will see the underlying harmony in your life and in all nature. If you harmonize your hopes and expectations with this inherent harmony, you will float through life on buoyant wings of peace. The beauty and depth of yoga lies in its bestowal of this invariable tran-

quility.”

COCHIN— In kitchens across India, coconut oil — once a humble staple — has become a luxury. Prices have nearly tripled in less than two years, hitting a record $4,840 per metric ton, as demand soars and supplies tighten across Asia’s coconut-growing belt.

The seeds of today’s shortage were sown during the pandemic, when lockdowns led to falling prices and farmers neglected their groves.

The rally in coconut oil prices began in late 2024 and gathered momentum as plantations in India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka struggled with erratic weather, heat waves, and pest attacks, Reuters reported.

For millions of Indians, especially in the south and coastal regions where the oil is central to cooking, hair care, and rituals, the surge has forced households to stretch budgets and search for alternatives. The squeeze is also hitting companies that use the oil in soaps, shampoos, and skincare products.

Tech Support Scams Exploit Your Reliance On the Experts

Ever received an unexpected alert by text or email claiming there is a problem with your computer that the sender needs your help to fix? That could very well have been a tech support scam.

The scammer impersonates an expert that may have more technical knowledge than you and pretends there is a problem with your system or device that you can’t see.

They want your personal information, passwords and access to your systems, and the easiest way to get it is to ask you for it. These things give scammers the keys to install programs that steal personal and financial information saved on your computer or phone and do tremendous damage.

Tech support scams can be delivered in a variety of ways. Sometimes they cause a pop-up on your screen that looks like a legitimate message from your software provider. Sometimes they create lookalike websites or web ads that list fraudulent phone numbers. If you call, the scammer will ask for personal information and in some cases, payment for services needed to “fix” the problem.

No matter how the scammer approaches you or what story they tell, the aim is to cause you to panic that something is broken or compromised and may lead to loss of access to your valuable records, photos, etc. This is especially upsetting to those who may be

less tech-savvy, especially when scammers are able to convincingly impersonate trusted brands.

There are ways to protect yourself, your information and your devices, though.

The most important thing to remember is not to panic! Scammers want you to react out of fear and respond without thinking. Pause, breathe and take time to verify. Contact trusted brands through their official websites and exercise a zero-trust approach, particularly when someone unknown contacts you with unsolicited advice.

Tech companies will not call you directly and won’t ask you to call them. They also won’t ask for your passwords, one-time passcodes or remote access to your computer. Other red flags to watch for include:

• Someone claiming to want to help applying undue pressure, claiming time sensitivity

• Demands for payment – particularly in an irretrievable form (cryptocurrency, gold, cash, wire transfer, gift card, money order, etc.)

• Requests for your personal information, passwords or account numbers

• Calls from phone numbers that are legitimate but unexpected, unknown, private or

a phone number that can’t be found on the company’s website

Actions you can take to protect yourself from this type of scam include:

• Restarting your computer if a pop-up appears and freezes your screen.

• Keeping your systems and antivirus up to date and running scans regularly.

• Not clicking links if you receive a message or alert and instead, typing in the official website address and making contact to verify whether there was a legitimate request.

• Disconnecting and independently locat-

ing a customer service number for the brand in question, then calling to verify the IT support contact was legitimate.

• Blocking unknown numbers and email addresses.

• Never giving anyone your password or verification code, and making sure passwords are not the same for multiple places.

If you are scammed, it’s critical to take immediate action to minimize the damage the fraudsters can do. Contact your bank, financial services providers and credit bureaus to alert them and institute a freeze. And file a report with the Finance Trade Corporation.

To learn more about scam prevention, consult PNC Bank’s Security and Privacy Center (pnc.com).

Tech support scams can be expensive. Be extra cautious when someone claims to be IT support. (StatePoint)

Float On, Worry Less: Protect Your Perfect Pool Day

With summer in full swing, many Americans fortunate enough to have a backyard pool are soaking up the sunshine and hosting friends who may not have their own athome oasis. But before the floaties come out and the grill gets going, there’s one thing that can make or break a pool day: peace of mind.

A perfect day by the pool starts with clean water, comfortable lounge chairs, and the confidence that your setup is protected from surprise damage or breakdowns.

Clean Pool, Happy Summer: Start with the Right Pool Cleaner

No one enjoys swimming in a pool full of leaves, bugs or murky water. A high-quality pool cleaner is a must, not just for aesthetics, but also to protect equipment, save

time and keep swimmers safe. Here are a few tips to pick the right cleaner for your pool:

• Robotic Cleaners: Great for convenience, these smart devices map your pool, scrub every inch, and can be scheduled via smartphone.

• Suction-Side Cleaners: Budgetfriendly and easy to install, these use the pool’s existing pump to vacuum debris.

• Pressure-Side Cleaners: Ideal for

yards with heavy debris, they keep filters from clogging.

• Manual/Battery-Powered Handhelds: These are best for spot-cleaning or small pools. Routine upkeep, like clearing the filter basket and inspecting parts, keeps cleaners running efficiently all summer long.

Lounge Like You Mean It: Choosing the Right Pool Chair

After cleaning the pool, relaxation is next. The right lounge chair can turn any afternoon into a staycation. Whether it’s for reading, sunbathing or socializing, comfort and durability are key. Look for:

• Adjustable comfort: Reclining

backs, cushions and headrests elevate the experience.

• Weatherproof materials: UV-resistant frames and quick-dry mesh stand up to heat and splashes.

• Space-conscious options: Foldable or stackable designs suit smaller patios.

• Mobility features: Built-in wheels or carry straps make rearranging and storing a breeze.

From sleek minimalist styles to luxury loungers with slide-out trays, there’s something for every poolside aesthetic.

Protect Your Poolside Setup from Sun, Water and Wear

Outdoor equipment works hard in the summer and replacing it isn’t cheap. Yet surprisingly few

Americans realize these items can be covered under a protection plan. A survey by Allstate Protection Plans found that while 61% of homeowners know smartphones are commonly covered, and 53% understand large appliances are eligible, far fewer are aware that outdoor items can be protected as well:

• Only 9% know patio tables are eligible

• Just 7% are aware that patio chairs and umbrellas can be covered

• And only 6% know lounge chairs qualify for protection

Protection plans from Allstate Protection Plans can help cover accidental damage, mechanical failures, and wear and tear, keeping essential poolside gear protected all season long. (Continued On Page 07)

3 Financial Pitfalls You Can Help People Avoid As A Financial Planner

Financial missteps can have devastating consequences for individuals and families.

As an advisor with CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification, here are three common financial pitfalls you can help your clients avoid:

Bad online advice: A recent CFP Board survey finds that 3 out of 4 Americans seek out financial information online at least once a month.

Unfortunately, a lot of this information is misleading, incorrect and even harmful. The survey uncovered that 39% of Americans have lost $250 or more because of bad advice, and 18% have suffered losses over $1,000.

Following bad advice can have long-term consequences and disrupt financial futures.

Younger generations are particularly likely to view social media, podcasts and generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a reliable source of financial information.

Nearly half of Americans aged 2545 (48%) believe online financial content serves their best interests,

almost double the rate of those aged 46-64 (25%).

As a CFP® professional, you can provide clients with sound, trusted financial advice and help them sort fact from fiction online and elsewhere.

Family conflicts over money:

Americans working with a CFP® professional have fewer financialrelated conflicts with family members, according to CFP Board’s “Financial Planning Longitudinal Study.”

The study suggests many potential reasons for this. One is that CFP® professionals are more likely to learn about their clients’ family values and their spouses’ relation-

ship to finances.

This approach helps align individuals’ financial plans with the plans of the people that matter to them.

Another reason relates to estate planning. Close to 3 in 5 Americans advised by a CFP® professional have a will, compared to 49% of people who work with a financial advisor without CFP® certification and 25% of those who are unadvised.

Ensuring that an individual’s financial affairs are in order is a critical way to keep the peace among family members after the individual passes away.

Letting financial anxiety take over

one’s life: Money is a source of ever-present stress and anxiety for many, particularly those who tend to wing it when it comes to financial decisions.

You can help your clients break this cycle with a detailed, holistic financial plan that accounts for everything from emergency funds and monthly budgets to long-term goals.

CFP Board research finds that consumers advised by CFP® professionals are more likely to have detailed plans around their retirement, investments, insurance and more, and they are also more likely to review these plans frequently.

Given this attention to detail, it’s no surprise that more clients of CFP® professionals report living comfortably than people who work with other financial advisors or who are unadvised.

Financial advisors with CFP® certification have been proven to help their clients avoid common financial mistakes and have a healthier relationship with money. To get started on the CFP® certification journey, visit CFP.net.

7 Steps For Maintaining A Clean Stovetop

A clean stove is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about functionality and safety.

Grease and food residue can become a fire hazard and affect the taste and quality of your food if not properly managed.

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your stovetop sparkling. After each use, wipe down the surface to prevent grime buildup.

Then periodically - once a week, if possible - give it a more thorough

cleaning with this step-by-step guide.

1. Ensure your stove is off and completely cooled before cleaning to avoid damage to the stove and cleaning tools.

2. For gas stoves, carefully remove the grates, burners and drip pans and soak them in warm, soapy water.

3. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface and remove food particles and loose debris.

4. Apply a mild, non-abrasive stove cleaner - either commercial or a DIY solution consisting of water and baking soda, vinegar or soap - generously to the surface.

5. Use a non-abrasive scrubber or soft cloth to gently scrub the surface.

For tougher spots, sprinkle baking soda then spray with vinegar. Let it fizz and sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.

6. Wipe down the surface again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue.

7. Dry the stovetop thoroughly with a soft cloth.

However, regular maintenance can not only ensure safety and longevity, but also prevent small issues from escalating into costly problems.

Common problems include the door not opening or closing properly, unusual noises during operation, the door reversing before it fully closes, uneven door movement and slow response time from the opener or remote control.

Identifying the root cause is the first step to fixing the issue.

* Door not opening or closing properly: This could be due to misaligned sensors, which can be fixed by adjusting the sensor brackets at the bottom of the tracks or cleaning the lenses.

* Noisy door: This can typically be resolved by tightening all the hardware, including hinges, bolts and screws - as well as the opener’s chain or belt - or lubricating the moving parts such as rollers, hinges and tracks.

Be sure to replace any that are worn out or damaged.

* Door reversing before it hits the floor: Often caused by an obstruction in the path of the door or a misadjusted limit setting.

Check for an object blocking the door (or a sensor) or reset the limit to alleviate.

* Door moving unevenly: Possibly due to worn-out springs or cables, it’s often best to replace the damaged parts.

* Slow opener response time: Try reprogramming the opener or replacing the batteries in the remove control to get more prompt response times (and potentially range) from your opener.

While many garage door maintenance tasks can be handled by homeowners, certain situations warrant professional intervention.

For instance, if you notice significant damage to the springs or cables, it’s best to call a professional.

Financial Tips For Women

Women face unique financial challenges, such as career breaks for caregiving and gender wealth gaps.

CERTIFIED

FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals are offering insights into some of these challenges, along with tips to help women build wealth and achieve financial independence.

The Challenges

Wealth gap: Across all workers nationwide, women were typically paid 75 cents for every dollar paid to a man in 2023, a figure that’s held steady for decades.

Given this persistent wage gap, it’s no surprise that the TIAA Institute finds that women have 30% less in retirement income than men, a big issue considering that American women live 5.8 years longer on average.

Caregiving roles: Women are often the primary caretaker to children and other family members, such as elderly parents, and are more likely than men to take time off from work to fulfill this role. This can impact long-term savings, professional advancement opportunities and Social Security benefits.

Health issues: While no one likes to imagine getting sick or feeling

unwell, the unfortunate reality is that 1 in 8 American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Other women’s health conditions, while not life-threatening, can also be costly to manage.

Menopause, for example, associated with more than 100 symptoms, costs U.S. women $26.6 billion annually in medical expenses and lost work, according to the Mayo

3 Ways To Tighten Up Your Household Budget

Sponsored Content. Planning your household budget is much easier when your monthly bills are as low as possible and predictable. Here are three common expenses you can rein in with a few smart strategies:

Insurance: Bundling your policies through one provider, like homeowners and auto or renters and auto, can help you save.

There are also steps you can take to keep your premiums in check, such as making key home improvements and avoiding filing small claims. When it comes to auto insurance, a safe driving record and modern

safety features in your car can help keep rates manageable.

Internet: Fast, reliable home internet doesn’t have to break your budget. Thanks to new options from providers like T-Mobile, highspeed service can now be both affordable and consistent.

T-Mobile Fiber is expanding access to gigabit-speed broadband with new plans available in select locations across the United States. Plans come with a 5-year price guarantee (exclusions like taxes and fees apply), unlimited data, symmetrical upload and download speeds and no monthly equipment

Clinic.

Financial abuse: Financial abuse is a common form of domestic abuse whereby a member of the household seizes control over another’s financial resources. While financial abuse transcends socioeconomic boundaries, the majority of victims are women.

The Solutions

So how can women overcome these challenges? Here are several strategies for building wealth and holding onto it:

• Be proactive about potential health issues. Understand the price tag involved for care and adjust your budget accordingly. Have disability insurance to replace income should a medical condition sideline you, and a life insurance plan in place before a serious diagnosis to secure an affordable policy.

• Select a health insurance plan that meets your needs.

• Establish an emergency fund.

fees, installation charges or annual contracts.

Each plan also comes with T-Mobile Tuesdays: weekly perks that include exclusive deals on gas, dining, entertainment and more. Whether you’re a remote worker, streamer or smart home enthusiast, there’s a plan that fits your needs, without automatic price hikes. And now is an especially good time to make the switch, thanks to current promotions.

Groceries: Subscription-based grocery services make meal planning on a budget a breeze, giving you the ability to buy only the groceries you need. Many services pre-fill your cart with go-to items, helping you avoid impulse buys.

Skip weeks, adjust quantities or add new items with a few clicks to make sensible purchasing decisions that are good for your health, and your pocketbook.

‘State Of Moving’ Survey Unpacks Relocation Frustrations

Moving today is harder than ever—and not just because the couch won’t fit through the door— economic pressures, tighter budgets and a widespread disdain for packing are casting a shadow over the task.

According to a recent survey conducted by Duck brand, a leading maker of packing and moving supplies, the aversion toward packing runs so deep that over two-thirds of Americans say they’d rather do almost anything else—like serving on a jury (20%), getting a root canal (14%) or even shaving their head (9%).

Today’s economic climate also is giving potential movers pause. Nearly 80% of Americans have thought twice about moving due to the current state of the economy, citing concerns such as coming up with a security deposit or down payment. Over 40% have either adjusted their moving timeline, or delayed or called off a move due to the impacts of higher housing costs

or inflation, with 70% of people saying moving now is more expensive compared to past moves. For individuals who are still planning to relocate, a major reason is moving to an area with a better cost of living.

How are those packing up the moving truck making the move more feasible? By scaling back and spending less. Thirty-seven percent are cutting back on eating out to help afford a move, and 34% are taking on side gigs to help with the cost. Additionally, nearly half (45%) are heavily decluttering to save money on packing and moving expenses, while 32% plan to skip out on professional movers entirely to stretch their budgets.

“While the financial strain is a large piece of the moving puzzle, what’s interesting is that one in four people still say packing everything up is the most frustrating part of moving,” says Heather Hammond, senior manager, Packing Tapes at Duck brand. (Continued On Page 12)

How To Prepare For Closing Costs For A Smooth Home Buying Experience

Buying a home? Don’t forget to account for closing costs. These settlement fees are among the last expenses you pay before officially taking ownership of your new home. Here’s what to know:

What are closing costs? Closing costs are fees charged by your lender, real estate agent and other third parties involved in the homebuying transaction.

They include various charges related to property expenses, the mortgage application process and other paperwork.

Closing costs include a combination of one-time fees, which may include the loan origination fee, appraisal fee, and initial installments of recurring costs — such as your homeowners insurance and escrow payment.

Why do closing costs matter? Although closing costs can vary based on the location, size and cost of the property you’re buying, they are important to budget for. Typically amounting to 2% to 5% of the

total loan amount, these fees are due at closing — and can add up to thousands of dollars.

Is it possible to save on closing costs? While these fees may feel like they are set in stone, there are actually key ways you can save on closing costs:

• Research multiple lenders. Comparison shopping can help ensure you are getting the best interest rate and terms available. Freddie Mac’s latest research shows you may be

able to save up to $1,200 annually by applying to loans from multiple lenders.

However, when you’re reviewing loan estimates, you should also pay close attention to the fee structures and any other items that you will need to pay on closing day.

• Negotiate fees. As part of choosing your lender, you should approach them about negotiating the fees included in your loan estimate, such as origination fees and pro-

cessing fees.

In many cases, financing charges are open for discussion and you may be able to get your lender to reduce or waive certain fees.

• Shop around for closing services. In addition to fees from your lender, you should expect to pay for additional closing services, possibly including title insurance, home inspections and appraisals. Even though your homebuying team may have a set of professionals they prefer to work with for these services, you can shop around for more cost-effective options to help lower your closing costs.

• Take advantage of financial aid programs. There are many programs designed to help homebuyers cover down payments and closing costs, especially if you are a first-time homebuyer. Talk to your homebuying team to determine if you qualify for any financial assistance.

• Request seller concessions. When it comes time to negotiate your of-

fer with the seller, you may be able to ask them for some relief on closing costs. For example, the seller may agree to cover some or all of the closing costs as an incentive to get the deal done. However, this is more likely to happen in a buyer’s market.

How can I prepare now? Access resources that can help you plan ahead for closing day, like the Closing Cost Calculator available through My Home by Freddie Mac, a guide to homebuying and homeownership that offers free online tools. Having an accurate estimate of your closing costs can help you have a smooth closing day.

The right tools and knowledge can simplify homebuying and make it more affordable than you might expect.

By understanding what fees are included in your closing costs and how to negotiate or reduce these costs, you can feel more empowered and in control of your purchase. (StatePoint)

How Support And Connection Can Improve Mental Health As You Age

Mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety and depression, are common among older adults, and can be exacerbated by declining health, loss of loved ones, financial challenges and late-in-life regrets. Unfortunately, these issues can impact overall health, quality of life, and in some cases, even be life-threatening. The suicide rate among Americans aged 75 and older is the highest of any age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you’re an older adult, Dr. Zia Wahid, medical director with Cigna’s Medicare business, encourages you to take the following actions:

Nurture relationships: Research has found that loneliness can have negative health consequences as impactful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. That’s why finding connec-

tion is essential. Check with your local community center to find out what activities, classes and social events they offer. Faith-based organizations, neighborhood gatherings, and clubs based on common interests are also great ways to meet people and stay engaged. A simple phone call with a loved one is often enough to strengthen bonds, and emotional resilience.

Get moving: Physical activity can improve strength and agility as you age. It can also be a powerful way to boost your mood and ease anxi-

ety and depression. From chair yoga to water aerobics, there are forms of exercise appropriate for every ability and age, and free or inexpensive classes offered in many communities. Your Medicare Advantage (MA) plan may also offer fitness benefits that can help you move more and stay connected. Group fitness not your thing? Consider just getting outdoors for a short walk and a dose of sunshine.

Avoid substance misuse: Substance use disorder is common among older adults, and can intensify mental health challenges. One in 11 adults over age 60 had a substance use disorder in 2022, and that number is on the rise, according to the American Psychological Association. Check your Medicare

plan. It may cover treatment for alcoholism and substance use in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Schedule a doctor’s visit: Mental health, just like physical health, requires your attention and care. If you’re experiencing mental health concerns, schedule a doctor’s appointment. They can refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker, or provide additional advice and resources.

Get it off your chest: Talking about your feelings with friends, family, or even a trained professional can be helpful. Medicare covers individual and group therapy with doctors or licensed clinicians, and some of these services are offered virtually.

Consider medication: Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, can be effective treatments for certain mental health conditions. A Part D plan – either standalone or

within an MA plan – covers many of these prescriptions. Before starting a new medication, be sure to talk to your doctor about possible side effects and interactions with drugs you’re currently taking.

Don’t wait: If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, immediately call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor. This free, confidential service is available 24/7 nationwide in both English and Spanish.

For more information about Medicare benefits and mental health, visit cignamedicareinformation. com.

“Depression and other mental health concerns don’t have to be part of aging. Treating these conditions can put you on the path toward a more fulfilling life, so that you can enjoy this chapter of life with confidence and joy,” says Dr. Wahid. (StatePoint)

3 Ways To Minimize Back-To-School Meal Prep Stress

Back-to-school often means a few “ugh” moments for parents. From early wakeup calls and forgotten lunchboxes to extracurricular chaos, meltdowns at homework time and picky dinner eaters, easy solutions in the kitchen can help lighten the to-do list.

Turn those groan-worthy moments into “no big deal” with Borden(r) cheese - a versatile protein that adds both flavor and fun to your meals.

Whether it’s shredded, sliced or in snack form, cheese provides simple ways to help keep meal prep stress to a minimum on school days.

Pack Lunches the Night Before

Preparing sandwiches, salads or wraps in advance can streamline your morning routine and ensure your family members have a nutritious meal ready to take to school or work.

A turkey and cheddar sandwich will hold up well in the fridge overnight.

Add grab-and-go options like string cheese, fruit or whole-grain crackers to go with their favorite sandwiches to create a balanced

and satisfying lunch.

Cheese sticks also fit perfectly in a pencil slot in backpacks to combat hangry kids after school.

Rely on One-Pot Dishes at Dinnertime

One-dish dinners can be a lifesaver when trying to balance packed schedules and get everyone to and from their activities.

With easy prep and only a single pot or pan to clean up, you can cut down on the time spent in the kitchen and enjoy more moments with your family.

Delicious and satisfying one-dish

recipes, like Skillet Chili Mac, elevate a family favorite by adding Borden cheese.

Made with real milk from American dairy farmers, it provides wholesome goodness you can feel confident serving your family.

Embrace ‘Batch and Freeze’ Cooking

Instead of prepping a full week’s worth of meals, focus on cooking large batches of a few key components.

‘State of Moving’ Survey Unpacks Relocation Frustrations

(Continued From Page 10)

“Luckily, we can help with both. At Duck brand, we offer affordable, high-quality packing and moving supplies that are easy to use and help streamline expenses, while also providing the durability essential to keep items safe and protected during a move.”

Considering that nearly 75% of people have had poor quality moving supplies cause a disaster during a move, prioritizing sturdy boxes, high-performing bubble cushioning for fragile items and easy-to-use packing tape can make all the difference in simplifying the moving process. Choosing products like Duck Max Strength Packing Tape, which is designed to seal even the heaviest boxes safely and securely, can help prevent items inside from being damaged during delivery.

To learn more about the Duck brand products that help make packing and moving stress-free, visit https://www.duckbrand.com/products/moving-storage.

While moving can certainly test our patience and wallets, it also has a way of bringing people together. The majority of Americans, almost 90%, are willing to help their friends and family move with only the promise of pizza as repayment. (StatePoint)

For example, cheese serves as a delicious protein in baked dishes that freeze and reheat well for busy weeknights such as lasagna or macaroni and cheese.

Or freeze individual servings of homemade burritos or quesadillas filled with cheese and other familyfavorite ingredients.

A Guide To Asking The Right Flooring Questions

If you’re looking for flooring inspiration for your next home renovation or new build, scrolling through social media boards and manufacturers’ sites are good places to start.

However, there are other important flooring considerations beyond aesthetics.

To help you find the right floor that balances beauty and substance, consider these questions from the experts at Beautifully Responsible.

Are the claims standing on sure footing?

Whether it’s sustainable flooring or flooring that promotes good indoor air quality, it’s difficult to know for sure which flooring really meets the criteria they claim. Third-party certifications can provide the dose of truth you need.

They are independently verified, meaning the flooring manufacturer needs to prove it’s meeting the strict guidelines of the certifications to use the badge.

For instance, third-party certifications - such as FloorScore (for indoor air quality) and ASSURE Certified (for multiple attributes in rigid core flooring) - are quick ways to make sure the flooring you’re considering can back up its claims.

While these floors look stunning in photos, how will they look after a few bouts of tug-of-war with your dog?

Life is full of unexpected moments, whether it’s your new puppy having an accident or spilling coffee in your rush to leave home. Make sure you understand how much effort is required to maintain your flooring choice.

Look for durable, scratch-resistant and water-resistant options. Your floors need to withstand your everyday life.

Flooring is also a financial and time investment. While it can be easy to get carried away with the variety of beautiful flooring options out there,

it’s important to match your floors with your family’s stage of life.

How can I find good looking floors I can feel good about?

You deserve to feel good about every aspect of your floors - whether it’s stopping your guests in their tracks in amazement when they enter a room or the environmental impacts made by a company working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

However, finding flooring that matches your home’s aesthetics and what’s important to you requires a little research.

1. Check the sustainability section on the manufacturer’s website. Most suppliers of Beautifully Responsible resilient flooring go to great lengths to engage sustainability in their business models. Many also publish detailed sustainability reports.

2. Look for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which detail product ingredients, carbon footprint and overall environmental impacts.

What about economics?

Aside from durability, scratch resistance, moisture resistance, third-party certifications and manufacturer commitments to sustainability, affordability is a major factor when choosing a floor.

Resilient products have an enormous bandwidth of affordable products that address first homes to dream homes.

Also, look for innovations created by resilient flooring manufacturers to make installation more effi -

cient and less costly than many

Get

other flooring categories.

Where can I find a floor that meets all these criteria?

Resilient flooring, including varieties from Beautifully Responsible member brands, offers hundreds of options with style and substance.

Resilient flooring offers many scratch-resistant and water-resistant options, making them both pet-friendly and a breeze to clean up with neutral cleansers. You can also find industry-wide EPDs for various types of resilient flooring

and many manufacturers regularly publish sustainability reports, sharing their progress toward environmental goals.

Walk on peace of mind knowing you’re protected from many common mishaps, all while creating a stunning, sustainable home environment.

Back-To-School Ready With Free Or Low-Cost Health Care For Your Kids

It’s back to school time and there is so much for families to do to get ready for the school year ahead, from getting school supplies to signing up for after school programs. Making sure kids have health care needs covered should be a part of those preparations.

Free or low-cost health insurance through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) can help children be prepared for the school year. When enrolled, kids up to age 19 have access to a comprehensive range of health services, including wellchild and sick visits, emergency visits, dental and vision care, behavioral health care and more.

If a kid needs a physical for afterschool activities, it’s covered. If a child has a fever, the doctor’s visit and prescriptions to get them back to school are covered. If a child has an accident, the emergency care

they need to get back on their feet is covered.

When kids have health insurance, they are less likely to miss school due to sick days, less likely to be distracted by pain or vision problems, and more likely to be able to focus on learning. This leads to more participation in the classroom and a better chance of finishing high school.

Medicaid and CHIP Support Students

Whether a child is learning their ABCs or getting ready to earn their high school diploma, access to health care services at any stage of schooling keeps them healthy. Having health insurance can help connect families with a consistent health care provider, which means having a doctor or practice to call for preventive treatment, annual physicals or sick visits. It can also reduce emergency room visits and

hospitalizations. Medicaid and CHIP cover more than 37 million children and teens across the United States.

The ABCs of Getting Insured with Medicaid and CHIP Enrollment is open year-round, meaning families don’t have to wait for a special time of the year to get covered. Medicaid and CHIP eligibility varies by state, depending on family income and household size. In most states, children up to age 19 with a family income of up to $80,000 per year (for a family of four) may qualify.

Families can apply online, over the phone, by mail, or in-person with their state’s Medicaid office or visit the “Find Coverage for Your Family” section on InsureKidsNow.gov. Coverage must be renewed each year, and it’s important for families to make sure their address, email, and phone number stay up to date with their state Medicaid office so they can receive communications about important renewal information. For more information, call 1-877-KIDS-NOW (1-877-5437669).

Communities can work together to make sure children get the health care they need to succeed this school year.

Tips For Buying Major Home Appliances Online

Nowadays, you can buy just about anything online and have it delivered and installed with just a few clicks. This includes major home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, furnaces, heat pumps and water heaters.

However, making a large purchase without inspecting the product or planning for installation comes with its own challenges. To ensure a smooth shopping experience, consider these tips for buying major home appliances online.

Do Your Homework

Set a budget and determine what features are necessities and which are nice to have. When you start searching, you’ll be able to compare product features and reviews. Look for customer feedback, especially regarding durability, performance and features.

For large and installed appliances like water heaters and heating,

ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units, research system requirements including size, capacity and system type (like gas or electric) and compatibility with your current home infrastructure like ductwork. Another consideration is if your state or municipality has local code compliances you must meet like emissions or energy-efficiency standards. This can be timeconsuming and difficult for some homeowners.

When shopping online, look for retailers that have partnerships with professional and licensed contractors to help determine the appropriate equipment for your home, make the installation process easy and help you tap into local utility rebates and tax credits.

Consider the Seller

On some online marketplaces, products may be listed by thirdparty sellers who are not affiliated with the original manufacturer,

the product may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

ing & Cooling created a unique partnership to simplify the HVAC buying journey.

Customers who inquire at Walmart. com are paired with a highly qualified and reputable dealer to help homeowners assess their requirements, offer energy-efficient equipment solutions and provide installation by trained, certified professionals.

Examine the Return and Warranty Policies

It’s easy to get excited about a product and not think what happens if it malfunctions, so it’s important to look for a manufacturer’s warranty and if extended protection plans are available.

When you find warranty information, read the fine print. Most manufacturers require the equipment to be registered after it’s installed to realize the full warranty benefits.

Look for Discounts and Financing

Many online retailers offer financing for big purchases, including zero-interest promotions or “buy now, pay later” options.

These monthly payment options allow you to fit large purchases into your budget rather than dipping into savings. Watch for hidden fees or high interest rates after promotional periods end.

For installed systems, check if you can bundle financing with installation and extended warranties for convenience. Some appliance manufacturers offer discounts on

products if purchased through specific retailers.

For instance, if you purchase a Bryant Heating & Cooling system through Walmart, you will receive an instant savings on the cost of a new HVAC unit and qualified customers can take advantage of exclusive financing offers.

Confirm Product Delivery and Installation

Products are easy to purchase online, but poor planning on delivery and installation can turn the process into a hassle. For larger and installed appliances, make sure delivery includes unboxing, setup and removal of old units, if needed.

Document Everything and Keep a Paper Trail

Documentation of higher priced items, especially those with installation next steps and extended warranties, can be helpful if you run into issues.

Some of the documents you should keep (in paper and digital versions, if possible) include a final invoice, permits (if applicable), warranty terms and information, delivery and installation scope of work and timelines. Take photos before and after installation.

Buying large home appliances and installed appliances online can save time and money, provided you approach it thoughtfully. This is part of a broader trend toward digital convenience in home services that makes online tools, virtual consultations and price transparency more accessible. With a little research, comparison and attention to detail, you can find the right appliances to fit your home, lifestyle and budget - without ever stepping into a store.

5 Easy Tailgate Foods That Don’t Require Cooking

Tailgating season is in full swing, but not everyone has time (or space) to fire up a grill before kickoff.

Whether you’re hosting friends in your driveway, tailgating without a truck or trying to simplify gameday prep, you’re not alone.

According to Paul Zahn, entertaining expert, fall is the perfect time to rethink the traditional tailgate menu.

“You don’t need a grill to impress your guests - you just need the right mix of crowd-pleasers, portability and no-fuss presentation,” Zahn said.

“It’s all about creating a vibe that feels fun and elevated, without requiring hours in the kitchen.”

The makers of Hormel Gatherings products - known for their readyto-serve party trays loaded with premium meats, cheeses and crackers - tapped Zahn to share his five go-to tips for building a no-cook tailgate spread that scores big.

1. Lean Into Local Favorites

“I love anchoring my events with a theme and what better way to celebrate your team than creating food and drinks that pay homage to them and their states,” Zahn said. “I’m talking hometown eats with a twist.”

For instance, Virginia ham fans can stack mild cheddar and honey ham between two crispy crackers, hit it with mustard and boom: instant ham-and-cheese bite. Bonus points for pairing with a local brew.

2. Make It Portable and Shareable

“No one wants to juggle a plate and a beer,” Zahn said. “Think graband-go.”

He loads up Hormel Gatherings trays and gets creative: caprese skewers with tomato, basil, mozzarella and salami, or “jar-cuterie” - mini jars layered with meats, cheeses and crackers.

It’s a creative way to serve charcuterie without the mess, and guests love the grab-and-go convenience.

3. Sweeten the Deal

“A sweet treat always buttons up your tailgating fun so dessert is a must-have,” Zahn said, “but keep it bite-size.”

His go-to is mini doughnuts in football-themed cups with whipped cream and team-colored sprinkles. Or go seasonal with apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin cookies or mini pies.

4. Don’t Forget the Bevs

“I love creating signature cocktails for events but no one wants to be

mixing and muddling drinks when tailgating with friends,” Zahn said.

“Make your cocktails the night before so you can actually enjoy the party.”

He preps mason jars of teamthemed drinks (a Bloody Mary if your colors are red and black) and loads them in a cooler with sparkling waters, canned cocktails and local beers.

5. Go Big on Chips and Dips

“Dips are a nocook crowdpleaser, and they’re perfect for tailgating,” Zahn said.

He serves guac, hummus and buffalo ranch with tortilla chips, pretzels and veggie sticks in single-serve disposable cups - no double-dipping, no mess.

Tailgating without a grill doesn’t mean compromising on flavor or fun.

With the right no-cook lineup - and a few strategic shortcuts - anyone can host a winning party this season.

Cheetah’s 130-Km Run Across State Lines Tests India’s Wildlife Corridor

SHEOPUR – In a dramatic test of India’s newly established interstate cheetah corridor, a free-ranging female cheetah named Jwala from Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park trekked nearly 130 km into Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district before being safely rescued and returned.

The incident marks the first confirmed inter-state movement of a cheetah since the corridor’s creation, raising both ecological optimism and logistical concerns.

Jwala, who wears a radio collar for tracking, was first spotted on August 11 in the Manpur area of Sheopur district with her cub.

By the next day, she had separated from the cub and crossed the Chambal riverbanks, eventually reaching Baler village in Rajasthan, officials said.

Early on August 13, villagers discovered her inside a goat enclosure and alerted the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve team.

Initial rescue attempts failed due to her aggressive behaviour, prompting RTR officials to call in the Kuno team.

The Kuno rescue team arrived by

mid-morning and successfully tranquilised Jwala within 15 minutes, removing the goat kill to prevent human-wildlife conflict.

She was then transported back to Kuno National Park, where she rejoined the population of 26 cheetahs, including nine adults and 17 Indian-born cubs, a Madhya Pradesh government statement on August 13 said.

Forest and police officials from both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan coordinated with each other to ensure the safety of both the animal and local residents.

The Kuno management expressed gratitude for the support received during the operation.

This incident comes just months after Rajasthan was formally integrated into India’s first interstate cheetah conservation corridor, which spans 17,000 square km across protected landscapes in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The corridor aims to facilitate natural movement of cheetahs and restore grassland ecosystems.

While the successful rescue highlights the corridor’s ecological potential, it also underscores the challenges of managing free-ranging predators in human-dominated landscapes.

Wildlife experts say such movements are a sign of healthy adaptation but call for enhanced monitoring and community awareness to prevent conflict. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Helping Children Manage Big Emotions

Little children experience big emotions. When things don’t go as planned or they feel overstimulated or face new experiences, children may respond with anger and frustration, fueled by feelings of shame, embarrassment or even a sense of injustice.

Because young children often don’t have the language or regulation skills to handle these big feelings, they can result in tantrums, mood swings, rebellion and emotional outbursts, which may trigger feelings of embarrassment and exasperation for parents. Fear not; every parent has been there.

Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at The Goddard School, and Kelly Oriard and Callie Christensen, co-founders of Slumberkins and authors of “All Feelings Welcome,” share guidance to help parents effectively deal with these situations.

Managing Meltdowns

Parents are most effective when they stay calm, speak quietly and move slowly.

Counterbalance your child’s extreme emotion and behavior with

the opposite extreme. Take deep breaths and stay near your child while the emotion dissipates.

Scolding only heightens the emotion, so start with empathy, not discipline, and affirm the feelings.

For example, “We all get angry sometimes,” or “It makes sense that you’re feeling this way.”

Help your child label feelings and seek to understand what caused the outburst. Try “sportscasting” - objectively narrating what you see.

For example, “I see you taking deep breaths. I see your cheeks are puffed up and your fists are

clenched.

I know your sister just took your toy and that might make you feel angry. Are you feeling angry?”

This technique can help your child associate physiological feelings with an emotional label.

Once calm, work with your child to repair and reconnect. Share your coping techniques.

For example, “I feel angry sometimes. When I get angry, I like to stomp my feet and turn up my music. Do you want to try this with me?”

Model this often, either when you’re upset or as a teaching moment by pretending to feel angry.

Real-life examples help normalize feelings and teach emotion regulation skills.

If you acted in a way you regretyelling, for instance - address it by apologizing and taking responsibility. This grounding can help you and your child move forward.

Taking Proactive Preventative Steps

While big emotions and corresponding behaviors are a natural part of early childhood, there are steps you can take to help mitigate future meltdowns.

Develop a routine and stick to it as much as possible. Children thrive with structure; the unexpected or unknown can lead to emotional dysregulation.

That said, there will always be disruptions and transitions - some small (such as an out-of-town houseguest) and some large (like moving or welcoming a new sibling).

Discuss these moments in advance

India Becomes World’s 3rd Largest Solar Power Producer

NEW DELHI — India has officially surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest solar power producer, marking a dramatic transformation in the country’s energy landscape.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, India generated 1,08,494 GWh of solar power in 2025, outpacing Japan’s 96,459 GWh.

Just a decade ago, India’s solar presence was limited to a few rooftops and desert projects.

Today, solar power accounts for 119.02 GW of capacity, including 90.99 GW from ground-mounted plants, 19.88 GW from rooftop systems, 3.06 GW from hybrid

projects, and 5.09 GW from offgrid installations.

This achievement comes as India doubles its solar manufacturing capacity to 74 GW in 2025, while solar PV cell production rose nearly threefold to 25 GW.

The launch of the nation’s first ingotwafer manufacturingfacility further strengthens its domestic supply chain, reducing reliance on imports.

India now ranks fourth in renewable energy installed capacity overall, fourth in wind power, and third in solar capacity.

to help your child anticipate and prepare for the change.

Certain situations, such as the grocery store or a public event, may be triggers for children.

Avoiding these situations altogether won’t help them learn, so prepare them with social scripting.

Tell a story about the situation, discuss what they’ll experience and how they might feel and label the emotions.

This talk can reduce anxiety, build confidence and make the situation more manageable.

Additionally, it’s important to recognize a child’s emotional state can be intertwined with yours; if you’re overwhelmed, stressed or anxious, your child may pick up on that and experience some of those same feelings. Likewise, if you’re calm, your child is more likely to be, too.

Finding Helpful Resources

When children are not in a heightened emotional state, reading books about characters and big emotions can be helpful.

Pause and ask them what they think the character is feeling and if they ever feel that way.

Its renewable energy share has crossed 50 percent of the total installed electricity base of 484.82 GW.

The country is on track to meet its 500 GW clean energy target by 2030 and net-zero by 2070.

Villages like Palli in Jammu and Kashmir, which became India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat, showcase the grassroots impact of solar adoption.

With vast solar potential—estimated at 748 GW—states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh are expected to drive the next phase of India’s clean energy growth. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Three Back-To-School Wellness Essentials

As kids are back at school and eager to get to know their new teachers, many families may still be trying to squeeze in some of the last details to be sure their kids are ready to succeed in their new school year.

A few important details for parents to also check in on are their children’s mental and physical wellbeing.

A child’s health can influence their growth, development and academic performance.

To help set children and teens up for success this school year, it’s important to stay up to date with wellness appointments, including annual physicals, dental checkups, comprehensive eye exams and mental health assessments.

Here are a few things parents can consider to help support their children’s well-being:

It’s ok to talk about mental health

Mental health challenges are on the rise among young people, driven by factors like academic pressures, relationships, social media, and broader social and economic inequalities.

Age, race, and gender also shape how these issues manifest and affect young people.

While it’s beneficial for parents to discuss health matters with their

children throughout the year, an opportune time arises during the annual back-to-school exam, also known as a well-child visit.

This scheduled check-up can serve as a timely platform for addressing various health concerns, including mental health, ensuring that kids are supported holistically as they prepare to return to school.

Over 50% of college students reported encountering behavioral or mental health concerns in the past year.

Pak Army Chief Asim Munir To Visit US Again?

ISLAMABAD- Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is expected to visit the United States this week to hold talks with his American counterparts, the country’s media reported on August 7.

Munir’s visit to the US would be

a return visit after US Central Command (CENTCOM) head General Michael Erik Kurilla’s visit to Pakistan in July, Pakistani daily ‘Dawn’ reported, citing sources.

During his visit to Islamabad, Kurilla was conferred with the Nishan-iImtiaz by the Pakistani government.

It will be Munir’s second visit to the US after his recent trip to Washington in June. During the last visit, US President Donald Trump hosted Munir for lunch at the White House.

So, even as children grow older and head off to college, be sure to check in on them emotionally, encourage open conversations, and remind your student that help is available.

No matter the age, checking in on your child’s mental health before the school year begins and throughout can help lay the foundation for a more successful and balanced year ahead.

Brush up on dental care for healthy smiles

Cavities are preventable, yet they are the most common chronic disease among children and teens in the U.S.

If left untreated, cavities can cause pain that leads to problems learning and speaking, as well as contribute to other long-term health issues. Cavities can also make eating uncomfortable and can affect nutrition and development.

Children, teens and adults should visit a dentist every six months for routine preventive dental care.

Pakistan military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations or Pakistan’s Embassy in the US have not yet announced the visit of Munir to Washington.

However, Munir had previously hinted that he could travel to the US again later this year.(IANS)

Dental plans usually cover preventive care, which means you may pay $0 out of pocket for certain covered preventive services if you go to a network provider.

It’s important to know that about 1 in 3 people in the United States have a fear of dental treatment.

If you believe your child may experience dental fear or anxiety, speak with their dentist or primary

care doctor for support.

Vision screenings can help kids see better

More than 1 in 3 school-age kids in the U.S. are nearsighted. Also known as myopia, nearsightedness can cause issues seeing things in the distance, like the front of the classroom, which may contribute to problems learning.

Possible signs of vision issues in kids include frequent eye rubbing or blinking, headaches, or struggling to remember what they have read.

It’s recommended kids get regular eye screenings throughout their school years. Yet, only 38.2% of California children have recently seen an eye doctor.

School-based vision screenings or pediatric office visits are valuable. Comprehensive eye exams can detect more complex issues.

Vision plans also usually cover preventive care, including comprehensive eye exams.

A vision plan may also provide an allowance to purchase glasses or contacts.

Consider talking with your children’s doctor and scheduling any care visits before school starts.

Check with your health plan to see what benefits are available to your family. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

HC4A’s Commitment To Supporting Students in Need: A Successful School Supplies Initiative

(Continued From Page 01)

In the spring, HC4A partners with Shalom-Austin to host a joint fundraiser known as “Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt.”

Over the years, this event has suc-

cessfully raised funds for multiple school supply initiatives.

This year,

however, presented unique challenges. A severe storm caused a power outage on the day of the fundraiser, forcing the event to be canceled at the last minute.

Despite this setback, the generosity of donors shone through, and

HC4A was able to raise enough funds to provide over 1,400 backpacks filled with school supplies.

On the first Sunday of August, approximately 200 volunteers gathered to pack the supplies into backpacks and load them onto trucks for delivery to local schools.

The effort was supported by various organizations, including Austin Arya Samaj, Boy Scouts, Young Men’s Service Legion, ROTC, and Park and Ride, all of whom contributed their time and energy to this worthwhile cause.

HC4A expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who made the packing day a success.

PM Modi To Visit China, First Trip Since 2020

BEIJING- Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit to be held in Tianjin City from August 31-September 1.

This will be PM Modi’s first visit to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which severely strained bilateral ties.

It is also coming in the wake of strained ties with the US under the

Modi had earlier travelled to China in 2019. He also held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Russia’s Kazan in 2024.

The breakthrough in bilateral talks, the first after the Galwan Valley face-off between the soldiers of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020, was made possible after New Delhi and

Their commitment and teamwork ensured that students would receive the supplies they need for the upcoming school year.

The pictures from the event capture the spirit of community collaboration that defines HC4A’s mission.

Beijing reached an agreement on patrolling along the nearly 3500-km LAC to end the four-year-long border confrontation.

Earlier in June, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the SCO Defense Ministers Meeting.

India had refused to endorse the joint declaration at the SCO Defense Ministers’ meeting, citing the exclusion of concerns around terrorism as a key reason.

India stated that it wanted concerns about terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country; therefore, the statement was not adopted. The SCO is a permanent intergovernmental international organization established in Shanghai in 2001.

The member states of SCO include India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. (IANS)

As the 2025-2026 school supplies

project concludes, HC4A remains thankful for the unwavering support from volunteers and donors alike.

Together, they have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many students, helping to ensure that every child has the tools necessary to succeed in their education.

Musk’s Starlink To Use Aadhaar For Customer Verification

NEW DELHI- The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has onboarded Elon Musk-owned global satellite internet provider Starlink Satellite Communication Private Limited, allowing the company to use Aadhaar authentication for verifying its customers, the Ministry of Electronics and IT announced.

Officials said this step will make the process of customer verification smooth, secure, and hassle-free. Under the arrangement, Starlink will use Aadhaar e-KYC to onboard new users.

Pak Sees Surge In Second-Hand Clothing Imports, Highlights Deepening Poverty

ISLAMABAD-An increase in Pakistan’s imports of second-hand clothing depicts the everyday struggles of the common man and demonstrates an economic system that has failed to protect its most vulnerable, a report has revealed.Best clothing retailers

Pakistan imported 1.137 million tons of used clothing worth $511 million in the last fiscal year.

The statistics surpass the previous high of 990,266 tons worth $ 434 million recorded in FY24.

“The increase highlights a growing dependence on second-hand apparel — not out of preference, but out of necessity,” an editorial in Pakistan Observer stated.

These figures show how a significant number of Pakistanis can no longer purchase new, locally made clothes.

The once-humble Landa bazaars popular for selling used clothes have become important shopping places for millions of people. Earlier, budget-conscious people used to shop from these markets. However, these markets are now becoming a last stop for families wanting to buy clothes.

According to the latest report by the World

Bank, nearly 45 per cent of people in Pakistan now live below the poverty line.

These numbers showcase not just a widening income gap, but a deeper socioeconomic strain that is compelling people to cut back on even the most basic needs.

The Pakistan Observer stated, “At a time when the government speaks of macroeconomic stability and hopeful indicators, the benefits of it must trickle down to the common man — who is grappling with high grocery prices and crippling utility bills.

The unprecedented import of second-hand garments is not merely a matter of consumer behavior — it is an indictment of an economic system that has failed to protect its most vulnerable.

It reflects a desperate attempt by families to maintain basic dignity in the face of growing hardship.”

According to the editorial, Pakistan needs to introduce policies towards easing the burden on the lower and middle-income groups, including targeted subsidies, genuine inflation control, improved access to basic services and job creation.

“Until then, the Landa bazaars will remain crowded — not by choice, but by compulsion.

And every bargain struck in these markets will serve as a quiet but powerful reminder of the urgency with which Pakistan’s economic recovery must be made inclusive and meaningful for all,” it concluded. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Weather Woes, Rising Demand Making Coconut Oil A Luxury Item

(Continued From Page 04)

As demand rebounded, influencers on social media spotlighted the health benefits of coconut water and oil, spurring a surge in consumption that the supply chain could not match, Reuters added. Mature coconuts take nearly a year to ripen, but many farmers, lured by the booming demand for electrolyte-rich coconut water, are harvesting them early. That has further reduced the supply of nuts available for oil and copra.

Globally, output has stagnated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates production at 3.67 million tons in 2024–25, virtually unchanged for three decades.

Now the demand has grown from farmers. “The demand for seedlings is so strong this year that most nurseries have run out of stock,” said an official with the state-run Coconut Development Board. “But new plantations will take at least four to five years to start producing, so high prices are likely to persist.”

India Signs Free Trade Deal With UK

NEW DELHI – While India’s talks with the Trump administration has been ongoing with many sticking points, India and the United Kingdom have cemented a “historic” Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a landmark pact projected to inject $34 billion into annual bilateral trade and create substantial opportunities across various sectors for both nations.

The agreement, signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, extends beyond economic partnership, serving as a “blueprint for shared prosperity,” as stated by Modi in a joint press statement in London.

The FTA provides significant advantages for India’s agricultural sector, granting preferential access to the UK’s $37.5 billion market while safeguarding India’s sensi-

tive sectors such as dairy, vegetables, apples, cooking oils, and oats.

Farmers and rural exporters stand to gain considerably, with zero duty on processed foods, a stark reduction from previous tariffs of up to 70 percent.

The pact also opens up the UK’s $5.4 billion marine products market for Indian fishermen, with import duties on these items set to drop to zero from an earlier high of 20 percent.

Beyond primary industries, the agreement is poised to boost job creation and enhance wages for Indian youth in services sectors like IT, finance, and consultancy.

Duty-free access to the UK’s $238 billion market is expected to create new career avenues in textiles, leather, and gems exports, along with opportunities in education and architecture services.

A key aspect of the FTA is its focus on streamlining business operations. The agreement offers simplified customs procedures, ensures equal treatment for businesses, and provides procurement access, allowing Indian MSMEs to bid for UK government contracts.

The services sector will also benefit from greater visa clarity for skilled Indian professionals, with up to 1,800 Indian chefs, yoga instructors, and classical musicians gaining temporary mobility access

to the UK.

Furthermore, approximately 75,000 Indian workers in the UK will be exempt from social security contributions for three years, a significant relief that will be further solidified by the newly agreed Double Contributions Convention.

The DCC ensures that employees moving between the two countries will only pay social security contributions in one country at a time, promoting ease and reducing the

cost of doing business.

The FTA also slashes import duties on major Indian export categories to the UK: textiles and clothing will see duties drop from up to 12 percent to zero, chemicals from 8 percent to zero, and base metals from 10 percent to zero, giving a competitive edge to these laborintensive sectors.

In addition to the economic accord, both leaders announced the launch of the India-UK Vision 2035, a roadmap for a robust partnership in technology, defense, climate, education, and people-to-people connections.

In the education sector, six UK universities are set to open campuses in India, following the recent inauguration of South Hampton University’s campus in Gurugram. (IANS)

U.S. Halts Worker Visas For Foreign Truck Drivers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. government announced on August 21 that it will immediately stop issuing worker visas for commercial truck drivers, citing safety concerns and the impact on American truckers.

“The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a post announcing the move.

Foreign-born drivers now make up 18 percent of the industry — in line with the United States labor market as a whole, but a departure for a profession long identified with the white working class, the news agency AFP noted. The number of

foreign-born truck drivers in the United States more than doubled between 2000 and 2021 to 720,000, according to federal statistics.

A State Department spokesperson clarified that the pause is “in order to conduct a comprehensive and thorough review of screening and vetting protocols used to determine

their qualifications for a U.S. visa.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the review “applies to all nationalities and is not directed at any specific country.”

Huge numbers of truck drivers are from Latin America and India. Among Indians, most are from Punjab and many a story has been written about their work on the farm highways of California which are dotted with dhabas and Punjabi radio stations.

The action comes as the U.S. Transportation Department has sought to enforce English language proficiency requirements for truckers, aiming to prevent accidents in which drivers’ inability to read road signs or communicate effectively may have contributed to fatalities.

“As we have seen with recent deadly accidents, foreign truckers can pose risks to American lives, U.S. national security, and foreign policy interests,” the State Department spokesperson said.

“Ensuring that every driver on our roads meets the highest standards is important to protecting the livelihoods of American truckers and maintaining a secure, resilient supply chain.”

The announcement comes amid ongoing incidents highlighting the risks cited by officials. In Florida, Harjinder Singh, an 18-wheeler driver, is facing three counts of vehicular homicide following a crash that killed three people.

His brother, Harneet Singh, was arrested by ICE after previously being released by Border Patrol, underscoring concerns about driver vetting and oversight.

The American Trucking Association, representing the industry, said it faces a shortage of roughly 60,000 drivers but voiced support for the administration’s measures.

“The issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers needs serious scrutiny, including the enforcement of entry-level driver training standards,” it said. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Modi Vows To Protect Farmers, Cut Taxes; Pushes Self-Reliance Amid US Tariffs

(Continued From Page 01)

Farmers at the Forefront

Reaffirming his political commitment to a crucial constituency, Modi declared that “farmers, fishermen, [and] cattle rearers are our top priorities,” vowing to act as a “wall” against any policy that threatens their livelihoods.

Though Modi avoided direct reference to Washington, his assurance to farmers echoed his earlier pledge that India would never compromise their interests. He has also politically wrangled with farmers in the past.

GST Cuts Ahead of Festival Season

Seeking to stimulate consumption in an economy bracing for slower growth, Modi announced a reduction in goods and services tax (GST) rates effective in October, ahead of the Diwali shopping season.

The cuts will target mass-use goods and essentials for women, students, and farmers, complementing earlier income tax relief and interest rate reductions.

The government hopes the move will boost affordability and steady demand in the face of external trade shocks.

Defense Push: ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’

Modi also unveiled a new defense initiative, “Mission Sudarshan Chakra,” inspired by

the legendary weapon of Lord Krishna.

The program, linked to indigenous capabilities such as the Russian S-400 system deployed during India’s brief conflict with Pakistan in May, is designed to neutralize infiltrations and strengthen offensive readiness.

“Operation Sindoor,” he said, had already shown India’s ability to act decisively without foreign dependence.

Alongside defense, Modi urged India’s innovators to develop homegrown jet engines, semiconductor chips, and AI systems.

A new National Critical Minerals Mission has been launched, with exploration underway at more than 1,200 sites to secure essential resources for energy and industry.

Nuclear and Space Ambitions

The Prime Minister announced plans to expand nuclear power capacity tenfold by 2047 with private sector participation, and to establish India’s own space station.

He praised over 300 domestic startups already active in satellites and deep-space exploration, underscoring India’s bid for technological leadership.

‘Vocal for Local’

Modi closed by calling on traders and citizens to embrace “Swadeshi” as a matter of pride.

“The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India,” he said, urging shopkeepers to promote Indian products.

He reiterated that India remains the “pharmacy of the world” and pushed for more investment in medical R&D, pointing to the country’s success during the Covid-19 pandemic. (IANS)

Jaishankar: Oil Purchases From US Are Up, And We’re Not Russia’s Top Buyer

said that India’s oil purchase from the US has been consistently increasing, as the August 27 deadline set by the Donald Trump administration to impose additional 25 per cent tariffs on India for buying Russian energy inches closer.

During a press briefing, EAM Jaishankar said that India is not the biggest purchaser of Russian oil.

“That is China. We are not the biggest purchasers of LNG; that is the European Union. We are not the country which has the biggest trade surge with Russia after 2022; I think there are some countries to the South,” he emphasized.

“We are a country where the Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to stabilize the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia.”

“Incidentally, we also buy oil from the US, and that amount has increased,” Jaishankar told the media.

The EAM said it is not only about oil, but In-

dia and Russia are “going forward” in looking at nuclear energy, greater market access, fertilizers, and labor mobility—something which he is “really very satisfied with.”

According to official figures, India’s oil and gas imports from the US have jumped by as much as 51 per cent from January to June this year. The country’s liquefied natural gas imports from the US also nearly doubled to $2.46 billion in the financial year 2024-25 from $1.41 billion in 2023-24.

India has increased purchases of oil from the US, with Indian Oil Corporation, the country’s largest oil company, placing orders for around 2 million barrels of oil in August for October delivery. Indian Oil Corporation has bought another cargo of US crude in August for delivery in October.

India also bought 2 million barrels per day of Russian oil in August against orders placed in June and July to replace purchases from Iraq due to geopolitical tensions in the region. The increase in Russian flow was at the cost of purchases from Iraq and Saudi Arabia, according to Kpler data. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Nishesh Basavareddy Gets US Open Wildcard

NEW YORK, NY – Nishesh Basavareddy, a 20-year-old with Indian roots, will make his US Open main-draw debut this month after receiving a wildcard — the latest milestone in his fast-rising career.

Coached by Bryan Smith and his brother Nishanth, Basavareddy now heads to New

York as one of the most intriguing young names in the draw. The US Open main draw will be announced on August 21, with qualifying rounds set for August 18–21.

Raised in Newport Beach, California, Basavareddy first grabbed attention on the junior circuit.

He won the under-14 Orange Bowl, a title once held by Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, and helped lead the U.S. to victory at the World Junior Team Finals in the Czech Republic.

Zakir Khan’s Historic Hindi Show Sells Out Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK, NY — Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan became the first person to perform a Hindi-language comedy show at the iconic Madison Square Garden on August 17.

The sold-out performance, which drew a crowd of 6,000 fans, marks a significant moment for Indian comedy on the global stage.

The show was part of Khan’s North America tour. Ahead of the performance, his posters were featured on Times Square billboards, and he appeared in prominent US media outlets to discuss the significance of performing in Hindi at such a renowned venue.

Since turning professional in late 2024, the former Stanford University standout has surged into the ATP top 100, peaking at No. 99 in June.

He has already claimed two Challenger titles this season and earned notable wins over Francisco Comesana, Alejandro Tabilo, Alex Michelsen, and Aleksandar Vukic. At the Cincinnati Open, he beat Vukic before falling to Alexander Zverev.

The Djokovic Moment

His defining breakthrough came at the 2025 Australian Open. Given a wildcard, Basavareddy faced Novak Djokovic in the first round and shocked the tennis world by taking a set off the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic later praised the American’s poise and energy, calling him a player to watch.

A 3-in-1 mop, vacuum and self-cleaning system, its versatility and ease of use will encourage you to make quick daily passes in high-traffic zones so that even with little ones and furry friends tracking in dirt, you can keep the home spotless.

Dust bunnies and after school snack crumbs have finally met their match thanks to its lay-flat design and 128-degree swivel brush, which let you reach under low-clearance furniture without heavy lifting.

Khan, who hails from Indore, shared his disbelief in an interview with Fox 5 New York, stating that performing at Madison Square Garden “felt like a place for big movie stars, not for boys from Indore.”

Khan expressed his gratitude on Instagram, calling the show a “big day” and a “special milestone” in his career.

The 37-year-old comedian is widely known for his relatable storytelling and ‘sakht launda’ persona.

Beyond this historic performance, Khan has a strong record of achievements. He gained fame after winning Comedy Central’s ‘India’s Best Stand-Up’ competition in 2012 and has since released popular specials like ‘Haq Se Single’ and ‘Tathastu’.

His previous milestones include being the first Asian comedian to perform a solo show at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2023.

Optimize Kitchen Tasks

Smart technology is helping hectic households streamline cooking and cleaning tasks for fresher, more organized kitchens. Certain smart fridges feature internal cameras connected to an app. These allow you to view the contents of your fridge so you can meal

plan from anywhere -- your workplace, the school pickup line, the grocery store -- before even walking in the door.

They can also help you stay on top of lingering items, and avoid unpleasant leaks and odors in hard to reach spaces.

Today’s latest dishwashers are also saving parent-chefs time and energy on busy weekdays. Embedded AI technology detects how soiled a dish is and adjusts settings accordingly, eliminating the need for pre-rinsing.

On the tail end of a cycle, AI is optimizing drying so that dishes come out of the machine ready to be stowed. The best part? These functions can be operated remotely.

Using a connected smartphone to run the dishwasher, you can return home to clean dishes, giving you more time to help the kids with their homework, prepare dinner and relax.

Get Help, But Make it Fun

One of the best ways to manage messes is by recruiting the entire family to help. To make it fun, engaging and streamlined, use an app like Sweepy. In addition to organizing a cleaning schedule for you based on your availability, and helping you prioritize what tasks needs to be undertaken first, the app also gives you the option of gamifying household chores. Simply add household members to the app, assign them tasks to complete, and have them compete for a spot on the leaderboard, so that clean-up is something that kids will actually look forward to!

This back-to-school season, don’t let messes get the better of you. With new tools and smart strategies, you can tackle everything from grass-stained sports uniforms to mountains of school clutter with ease. (StatePoint)

SAN DIEGO, CA – When Netflix’s new six-episode series, ‘All the Sharks’, premiered on July 4, viewers were taken on a global expedition to some of the world’s most shark-rich waters. Among the four competing teams of ocean experts was a viewer favorite: Scripps Institution of Oceanography postdoctoral scholar Brendan Talwar. Teaming up with marine biologist Chris Malinowski to form “Team Shark Docs,” Talwar embarked on a two-month journey to the Maldives, the Galápagos Islands, The Bahamas, South Africa, Japan, and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Their mission? To photograph as many different species of sharks and rays as possible. With rarer species earning more points, the competition was fierce.

The pair’s tireless efforts paid off. They collected images of over 50 shark and ray species, ultimately winning the $50,000 grand prize. They split the winnings between their chosen nonprofit organizations, the Reef Environmental Education Foundation and the Ocean First Institute.

According to a UC San Diego Today report, Talwar saw the show as a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between science, fieldwork, and public education. He empha-

sized that “every encounter with a shark or ray was a win for the audience,” highlighting the series’ role in raising awareness. Talwar’s journey to the world of shark conservation began with his graduate studies. He earned a master’s degree from Florida State University, where his thesis focused on the post-release mortality of deep-sea bycatch species, specifically the Cuban dogfish and giant isopod.

During this time, he also assisted with fishery independent surveys in the northern Gulf of Mexico and Florida Keys and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and field courses. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biology/Biological Sciences from Florida International University. Beyond the competition, Talwar and Malinowski are using their newfound platform to advocate for shark and ray conservation. They chose REEF as one of their charities because its mission of using citizen science to monitor marine life aligned perfectly with their own values.

Talwar’s passion for marine life is ongoing. He will continue his research at Scripps until September 2026, focusing on shark and ray populations in the Caribbean. His work there aims to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation efforts.
