Recognizing Stroke Signs And Symptoms Could Save A Life
Stroke continues to remain a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. With over 12.2 million new strokes occurring each year, experts at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke say that every minute counts, as fast treatment may lessen the brain damage that a stroke can cause.
Stroke can affect anyone at any age, at any time, making it critical that everyone, especially those with known risk factors, understand and recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke, as well as their options as patients.
The signs of stroke can be subtle and hard to recognize, so educating yourself and others is key to noticing and responding quickly. One easy way to remember the signs of stroke is with the acronym FAST from the American Stroke Association. This stands for:
F - Face Drooping
A - Arm Weakness
S - Speech Difficulty
T - Time to call 911
The sudden onset of any of these signs, as well as confusion, severe headaches and vision problems, could mean that someone is having
a stroke, which is why it’s important to call 911 immediately when a stroke is suspected.
Disability is common post-stroke, and recovery periods can be lengthy. This highlights the importance of speedy emergency care, which can help prevent disability
and death, and may lead to a better quality of life post-stroke. It’s also important to understand that 25% (1 in 4) of stroke patients will experience a second stroke within the first five years. However, with lifestyle changes and proper care, patients can reduce their risk
“Everyone should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of stroke to ensure that they or a loved one receive appropriate and timely care.
Going to the emergency room at the onset of symptoms can impact the care a patient receives, including their eligibility to enroll in a clinical trial, so it’s vital to seek immediate medical attention at the first sign of stroke,” says Clay Johnston, PhD, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder, Harbor Health.
One particular clinical trial, Li-
brexia STROKE, is currently recruiting patients to evaluate an investigational medication for recurrent stroke prevention, but eligibility is time-sensitive and participants must enroll within 48 hours after the onset of their stroke symptoms. Delays in seeking care following the initial symptoms of a stroke can limit access to these types of innovative treatment options.
Learn life-saving facts about stroke prevention and treatment by visiting https://www.stroke.org/en/ about-stroke/stroke-symptoms.
“The opportunity to receive the best possible treatment and care begins with widespread awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke and the urgency of seeking immediate emergency medical attention when a stroke is suspected,” says Dr. Johnston. (StatePoint)
Harvard Vs Trump: Court Stops Ban, Hundreds Of Indian Students In Crossfire
India-West News Desk
BOSTON, MA – Harvard sued and won a temporary stop on May 23 against a sweeping Trump administration move that could upend the futures of thousands of international students, including hundreds from India. A federal judge granted an emergency order halting the administration’s revocation of Harvard’s certification to enroll international students — a decision seen as punishment for the university’s refusal to comply with politically charged demands. This legal battle underscores growing tensions between elite universities and the Trump administration over campus governance, free speech, and protest rights.
The implications for Indian students are profound. With 788 Indian nationals currently enrolled at Harvard, many now face a precarious situation — risking deportation or being forced to transfer if the government’s actions are upheld. The administration’s demands — including disciplinary records, surveillance footage of protests, and
the dismantling of diversity initiatives — have alarmed students, educators, and foreign governments alike. Harvard, citing First Amendment violations and retaliation, is mounting an aggressive legal challenge to defend its institutional independence and protect its international student body.
The Legal Showdown
The case escalated when Harvard filed a lawsuit arguing that the De-
partment of Homeland Security’s move to strip its Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification was illegal retaliation. Hours later, U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs — who is also overseeing a separate Harvard suit regarding a $2.65 billion federal funding freeze — temporarily blocked the enforcement of the decision, stating the university would suffer “immediate and irreparable injury.”
The court has scheduled a remote hearing, with arguments for a preliminary injunction set to follow — potentially extending protection for Harvard’s international students through the duration of the lawsuit.
Political Retaliation
The administration’s actions are part of a broader campaign targeting what it sees as ideological resistance within higher education. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem accused Harvard of failing to curb pro-Palestinian protests and claimed the campus environment had become “hostile” toward Jewish students. The ultimatum delivered to Harvard demanded compliance within 72 hours, including surrendering disciplinary files and protest-related surveillance.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration has moved to freeze research grants and floated removing the university’s tax-exempt status — an extraordinary step aimed at
reshaping how U.S. campuses engage with issues of race, politics, and free expression.
For Indian students and their families, the stakes are personal and immediate. Many have invested years preparing for Harvard — academically, financially, and emotionally. Those completing their degrees this spring may graduate without interruption, but others could be forced out unless legal protections hold.
The Indian Embassy in Washington has voiced concern and is closely watching developments, while Harvard has pledged legal and institutional support for all affected students.
This case could set a major precedent for the future of U.S. higher education and its global ties. It is also a critical moment for international students, especially from countries like India, who have long seen U.S. universities as gateways to opportunity. For now, a judge has hit pause. What Parents Should Know About This Common Cause Of Birth Defects
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that infects people of all ages and belongs to the same family as other common viruses like the chicken pox virus. When a pregnant woman catches CMV and the growing fetus becomes infected, this is known as congenital CMV (cCMV) and it impacts about 1 in 200 babies.
While most babies born with cCMV do not develop signs of infection, about 1 in 5 will have birth defects or other long-term health problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Signs at birth can include rash, jaundice, microcephaly (small head size), low birth weight, enlarged liver and spleen, seizures, and damaged eye retina. Long-term problems can include changes in hearing and vision, developmental and/or motor delay, microcephaly, lack of coordination or weakness, and seizures.
Young children with CMV can spread the virus to their parents.
This is why the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers these tips to parents, childcare providers, and pregnant women to
their chance of infection:
• Reduce contact with saliva and urine from babies and young children.
• Do not share food, utensils, cups
or pacifiers with a child.
• Wash your hands with soap and water after changing diapers or helping a child to use the toilet.
If your newborn is exhibiting signs of cCMV, visit your pediatrician as soon as possible. Testing for cCMV must be done within 2 to 3 weeks after the baby is born. If your baby has cCMV and is exhibiting signs
of infection, antivirals can help, though babies who are being treated with these medicines should be closely watched by their doctor for possible side effects.
The AAP offers comprehensive resources for physicians to help them identify cCMV and support treatment of the virus, as well as resources for families and caregivers.
“It’s important to remember that many of us do not know if we have a CMV infection. Even without symptoms, we can spread the virus through body fluids like urine and saliva. Reducing the spread of the virus to those who are pregnant and others at risk of serious illness, as well as knowing the signs of cCMV, is essential,” says Mary T. Caserta, MD, FAAP, professor of pediatrics in infectious diseases at the University of Rochester Medical Center and member of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases. (StatePoint)
Are Your College Savings On Track?
If you’re like many Americans, college savings may be taking a back seat to other financial priorities right now. Financial advisors want you to know that there are options to maximize education savings that you may not be taking advantage of.
New research from Edward Jones, a leading North American financial services firm, and Morning Consult found that 52% of Americans don’t know what 529 plans are, and only 14% note they have or intend to use one as part of their education savings strategy.
“As a parent myself and as a financial advisor, I’ve seen the impact that 529 plans have had for my family’s and my clients’ education savings,” said Andy Esser, a financial advisor at Edward Jones. “With education costs and borrowing costs on the rise, it’s more important than ever for Americans to understand the savings options available to them.”
To help you get your educationspecific and broader financial goals on track this 529 Day–celebrated May 29–Edward Jones is sharing these fast facts about 529 plans:
529 plans, defined: A 529 plan is an education savings investment account that offers federal and state tax benefits. Earnings grow tax free and distributions are tax free, when used for qualified education expenses, and many states plans offer state income tax deductions for contributions
Distributions are flexible: While 529 plans offer a variety of options for how beneficiaries use the funds, this fact is widely misunderstood. In fact, the majority of surveyed Americans are not aware that 529 funds can be used for qualified apprenticeships (72%), K-12 expenses (65%), or possibly even for rollover funds to a Roth IRA (81%), among other options.
Account management offers options: If your family has multiple
children, you may choose to open just one 529 account, or different accounts for each child. Either way, if a named beneficiary decides not to attend school, the account owner can change the beneficiary to another eligible family member.
Contributions are easy: 529 plans accept contributions from anyone, regardless of whether they are account holders, making it easy for loved ones–from grandparents to family friends–to contribute to tax-advantaged education savings.
Savings are falling short: Only 38% of Americans feel like they are saving enough to reach their education savings goals, meaning most families will likely need to lean on student loans to meet costs. A 529 plan can offset what your family might need to borrow, helping position you for a debt-free future.
Financial advisors can help: The majority of respondents (78%) do not typically consult a financial advisor before making decisions related to education savings, but 21% say that working with a financial advisor would help them feel better about covering the costs of future education expenses.
Financial advisors can act as impartial third-party experts to develop tailored strategies to meet your savings goals within the context of your big-picture financial goals.
To learn more about 529 plans, visit www.edwardjones.com.
“Amid inflation and high interest rates, a growing number of young people are considering skipping higher education altogether. Understanding the many savings options available can help them make an informed decision about whether college is within reach,” says Esser. (StatePoint)

4,000 Reasons To Love Bees
May 20 is World Bee Day, an opportunity to celebrate not only the beloved honey bee, but North America’s 4,000 species of native bees, many of which are busy right now.
“Throughout spring and summer, these insects dutifully pollinate crops and wildflowers, playing a vital role in fostering healthy ecosystems,” says Clay Bolt, manager of Pollinator Conservation and Great Plains communications, World Wildlife Fund.
According to Bolt, native bee species are beautifully varied in their appearance, behaviors, feeding habits and habitats.
They can be striped, metallic, fuzzy, thin and rotund, in a spectrum of colors. The world’s smallest species—the Euphorb mini-fairy bee—is only found in southern deserts. At 2 millimeters, it is about as long as a U.S. nickel is thick.
Different bee species fly at different times— early morning, daytime or night. Many emerge seasonally in spring or summer, while others remain hidden underground for years awaiting summer monsoons. Bees inhabit diverse environments, from cold mountain peaks to beaches.
Generalist species visit many flower types, while specialists pollinate only specific flowers. And unlike bumble bees and other hive-
dwelling bee species, such as honey bees and stingless bees, over 70% of the world’s bee species are in fact solitary, hardworking moms who quietly nest in overlooked places like decomposing logs and alongside garden paths.
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “what is a bee?” you might be surprised to learn that they are vegetarian wasps. However, unlike their wasp relatives, which often feed their young protein in the form of paralyzed insects and the hamburger they might steal from your picnic table, most bees provide
their offspring with protein made from pollen mixed with nectar. The mother bee compacts these materials into a pellet and places it within her nest cavity, lays a single egg atop the mixture, then seals the chamber where the young bee will develop entirely without maternal assistance.
How can you help bees?
Sadly, bees face threats to their survival, but there are steps you can take to help protect them.
Bees need healthy, pesticide-free foods
throughout their lives. This is one of the greatest gifts you can offer these pollinators, especially because parks and gardens often grow flowers that only bloom during peak summer. By planting a variety of plants that flower from early spring through autumn, the number of native bees and other pollinators visiting your garden will increase exponentially.
“Through small acts of kindness, you can transform the lives of these remarkable creatures, while filling your heart with profound hope and wonder as you witness their delicate yet ongoing care of our shared world,” says Bolt.
World Bee Day also kicks off World Wildlife Fund’s new “Stories of Hope and Wonder,” an ongoing series that connects people to the wonder of nature and offers hope for a future benefiting both people and wildlife. Each month, “Stories of Hope and Wonder” will feature a different species overcoming some of nature’s toughest obstacles to ensure its survival. To access these stories, visit www. worldwildlife.org/hopeandwonder.
Bees are industrious creatures that are essential to vital food systems and healthy ecosystems. While bees are at risk, individuals can make all the difference in their own backyards this World Bee Day and beyond. (StatePoint)
Understanding The Hidden Dangers Of LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
These days, wellness information is practically everywhere you turn. Do this; don’t do that. Eat more of this; eat less of that. This is good for you; that is bad.
It can be hard to cut through all the noise, but the reality is, when it comes to something as serious as your heart health and LDL cholesterol - the “bad” cholesterol - ignoring it can be downright dangerous for your health.
According to the American Heart Association, about every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack, and strokes occur at about the same frequency.
High LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol, significantly increases your risk of heart disease.
A poll conducted by The Harris Poll for the American Heart Association revealed 75% of heart attack and stroke survivors reported having high cholesterol. Yet nearly half (47%) of heart attack and stroke survivors
are unaware of their LDL cholesterol number.
This lack of awareness shows more knowledge is needed to help survivors proactively manage their health.
In fact, knowledge is key to reducing your risk of heart disease. Understanding the impact of LDL cholesterol and knowing your LDL number can help you make informed decisions.
Cholesterol: The Good and The Bad
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance your body needs to build cells and produce hormones. However, not all cholesterol is created equal:
* LDL (low-density lipoprotein) Cholesterol: This is the “bad” cholesterol. When too much LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain, form-
ing plaque that can narrow and eventually block these arteries, leading to heart attack or stroke.
* HDL (high-density lipoprotein) Cholesterol: Known as the “good” cholesterol, HDL helps remove the “bad” cholesterol from the arteries, protecting against heart attack and stroke.
A Silent Threat
Many people think high cholesterol has obvious signs, but that’s not always the case. In fact, about half of U.S. adults and 42% of heart attack and stroke survivors mistakenly believe high cholesterol has clear symptoms.
However, high LDL cholesterol typically doesn’t show any signs, which is why it’s known as a silent threat to your heart.
People who have had a heart attack or stroke are at higher risk of future cardiovascular problems, which is why it’s important to
monitor your cholesterol regularly to help prevent future events.
It’s also important to know high LDL cholesterol can be genetic, meaning someone who eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly can still have high cholesterol. Additionally, the risk of high LDL cholesterol increases with age.
That’s why the American Heart Association’s “Lower Your LDL Cholesterol Now” initiative, nationally sponsored by Amgen, emphasizes the importance of regular cholesterol checks regardless of your weight, diet and physical activity levels.
Knowing your LDL cholesterol numberand understanding the target levels based on your health history - gives you the opportunity to manage your health proactively. This enables you to make informed decisions to prevent future heart issues.

Four Ways You Can Support Young Men’s Mental Health
There is an epidemic of loneliness affecting boys and young men in America. The fascination with recent shows like Netflix’s “Adolescence,” Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation,” and the return of the online “Ice Bucket Challenge” spotlight this youth mental health crisis in important ways that have reached millions. It is no secret how the mental health crisis has impacted boys and young men, and with May marking Mental Health Awareness Month, the conversation is more important than ever.
Meanwhile, statistics show that large numbers of boys and young men are feeling driftless and alienated; and so-called AI “aggrorithms” are filling the void by increasingly driving them toward misogynistic content and misinformation online.
Traditional gender roles have resulted in boys and young men often being left out of the mental health conversation and care, despite being at particularly high risk for poor mental health outcomes. They are the least likely to seek mental health support and are four times more likely to die by suicide than women in the United States.
Supporting boys in addressing mental health challenges begins with ensuring that they have the role models to learn how to build healthy relationships, ultimately leading them to take healthier actions, and create safer communities for all.
For nearly 40 years, Futures Without Violence, a national non-profit, has pioneered programs and resources for advocates, policymakers and other professionals to foster
safe, healthy communities. Through its Engaging Men programming, the organization is working to mitigate online dangers for boys and men, addressing the mental health crisis among them by connecting them with trusted mentors, and is supporting them to engage in healthier relationships.
One of their efforts is a program called Team: Changing Minds (T:CM), which launched three years ago after a $5 million grant through Harry’s Open Mind Initiative. Training already-embedded adults in the lives of kids, like sports coaches, teachers, mentors and community leaders, to recognize early signs of mental health challenges, the program leverages existing relationships and
trust to connect boys and young men to necessary support. With the support of founding investor Harry’s, and partners FUTURES, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, T:CM has trained over 80,000 adults to-date and is on track to reach over 1 million youth within the next year.
Anyone can be a mental health support for the boys and men in their life. Here are four simple, everyday actions family members, friends and coaches can take right away:
1. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask simple questions that show concern. If there are specific changes you’ve noticed, men-
tion them. This can be as simple as, “You’ve been less talkative lately, is there anything you’d like to talk about?”
2. Listen to understand (not to respond) with empathy. If you’ve shown the young people in your life that you’re someone who really hears them, they may be more likely to talk to you when they are having a rough time.
3. Ask for help. You’re not a therapist, and you aren’t expected to have all the answers. Lean on experts (such as school counselors or your child’s pediatrician) and brainstorm others you can call in to be part of the support team. You’re an important piece of this puzzle, but you never have to do this alone.
4. If you or someone you know needs help, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by just dialing 988.
To become a Team Changing Minds responder, visit teamchangingminds.org. To learn more about the mental health crisis affecting men and boys, visit futureswithoutviolence.org.
“Focusing on everyday actions to empower boys and young men to step into the simple things they can do as leaders, allies and change-makers is the goal, ” says Brian O’Connor, vice president at Futures Without Violence. (StatePoint)

Is Your Home Wasting Water? Stop Your Leaks Before They Cost You
The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it’s a stark reality. From wildfires in the West to massive storms battering the South, Americans are reminded each day of their environmental impact.
Among the most pressing concerns is water scarcity. While water covers 70% of the globe, only 0.5% of it is usable for us, according to the Bureau of Reclamation.
Climate change, pollution and rapid urbanization are further reducing water access.
A Growing Crisis
Water scarcity, driven by climate change, affects homeowners through rising insurance premiums, soaring utility costs, and
Opportunities In IgA Nephropathy Research:
Exploring The 4 Hit Process
IgA nephropathy is a progressive, autoimmune, chronic disease that predominantly affects adults between the ages of 20 and 40, with an annual global incidence of 2.5 cases per 100,000 people. Despite its prevalence, IgA nephropathy remains a challenging disease to manage and treat.
The condition is characterized by the accumulation of immune complexes containing Gd-IgA1 in the kidneys. Over time, IgA nephropathy leads to kidney injury and can progress to kidney failure, requiring dialysis and/or kidney transplantation.
Recognizing the Patient Burden
The disease may present as asymptomatic in its early stages, but manifests in various ways, including hematuria (blood in the urine) or proteinuria (protein in the urine).
Symptoms may include fatigue, backache, high blood pressure, and foamy or tea-colored urine, among others.
The impact of IgA nephropathy extends beyond the physical health of patients. As the disease progresses, patients may experience
increased anxiety, impairment in daily activities, and reduced work capacity. Dr. Edgar Lerma, a leading nephrologist, explains, “Proper identification and diagnosis of IgA nephropathy are crucial, especially as patients are typically diagnosed in their 20s to 40s. Unfortunately, many will eventually progress to end-stage kidney disease, adding a physical and emotional strain not only on patients, but also on their families.”
The road to diagnosis can often be delayed, as symptoms may initially be subtle or not identified. This can lead to a delayed treatment response, further complicating disease management. As patients face progressive kidney dysfunction, identifying an effective care plan with their healthcare provider is essential.
Understanding the Treatment Landscape Treatments may help manage symptoms and slow disease progression. Optimized supportive care today focuses on blood pressure control, renin-angiotensin system inhibition, and lifestyle modifications. (Continued On Page 07)
declining property values. Meanwhile, rapid urbanization strains water infrastructure, and pollution continues to degrade water quality.
According to the 2024 Ecolab Watermark Study, 68% of Americans worry about climate change, and 70% are deeply concerned about water access.
Luckily, there are still things that can be done to mitigate these concerns.
Smart Solutions for a Promising Future
Eco-conscious design is not just a trend, it’s a crucial component of planetary health.
Smart home innovations, such as water monitors and leak detectors, are helping homeowners conserve water and protect their homes.
“Smart home solutions have been around a while, but continue to improve based on growing demands,” says Mason Hall, head of connected products, Moen and Fortune Brands Innovations.
“Implementing smart products – specifically water-saving fixtures—is one of the simplest ways to make your home more sustainable without sacrificing your overall experience.”
When it comes to water conservation, Moen’s Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff is leading the charge.
This device continuously monitors your entire home’s water usage, detecting leaks as small as one drop per minute—from a leaky toilet to a major pipe burst.
Using machine learning, it identifies changes in pressure and flow, alerting homeowners before damage escalates.
In fact, 60% of users discovered a leak they weren’t aware of within 30 days.
In total, the Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff has alerted users to over 2 million potential water leaks, according to Flow Technologies data.
Plus, it helps track water usage by individual faucet, empowering waste reduction and money savings.
Protect Your Wallet (And the Planet)
Rising environmental issues often lead to rising insurance costs. In disaster-prone areas, some insurance companies are reducing coverage or even withdrawing from the market due to the high costs and frequency of claims for home repairs or rebuilds.
Water damage, in particular, is a major culprit. The Insurance Information Institute (III) reports that water is claimed six times more than fire and eight times more than theft.
Based on III and Census Bureau data, Moen estimates that nationally, insurers pay out over $15 billion
in water claim damages annually.
To mitigate these costs, many insurance companies now offer premium discounts to homeowners who install smart products like the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, which can reduce the likelihood of water damage claims.
Making Every Drop Count
Companies also have a responsibility to help drive positive change.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 1 trillion gallons of water are wasted due to leaks each year. I
n 2020, Moen launched Mission Moen, a commitment to conserve 1 trillion gallons of water through the use of water-saving products by 2030.
Since then, the company has conserved 317 billion gallons of water.
Moen’s new Hot Water Savings Handheld Shower by some estimates reduces shower water usage by over a third—saving up to 5,500 gallons annually.
When Conserve Mode is activated, this feature reduces water flow to a trickle once it reaches 95 degrees F, then maintains the temperature, preventing unnecessary water waste while still providing an exceptional shower experience.
The product also features Moen’s Magnetix technology, with a magnetic dock made from recycled ocean plastic, further embracing sustainability.
At moen.com, consumers can find solutions that help contribute to a healthier planet.
By embracing smart technology, practicing conservation and supporting companies that make a positive impact, everyone can play a role in creating a water-abundant future. (StatePoint)
Opportunities In IgA Nephropathy Research: Exploring The 4 Hit Process
(Continued From Page 06)
In higher-risk patients, immunosuppressive therapies may be used, though they may come with significant side effects and long-term toxicity.
Despite the availability of these treatments, Dr. Lerma emphasizes, “Continued research into IgA nephropathy remains crucial to uncovering new opportunities and advancements in our understanding and treatment of patients.”
The Role of APRIL and the 4 Hit Process in IgA Nephropathy
One area of opportunity in IgA nephropathy research is the role of APRIL (A PRoliferation-Inducing Ligand), a cytokine in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family, and a key driver of the 4 hit process, which is an important initiating and sustaining factor in IgA nephropathy pathogenesis.
As Dr. Lerma explains, “Targeting APRIL and the 4 hit process represents a potential therapeutic strategy to disrupt IgA nephropathy’s pathogenesis.
This is the process in which pathogenic Gd-IgA1 is produced, leading to the synthesis of autoantibodies against Gd-IgA1, immune complex formation, and deposi-
tion in the glomerular mesangium, which may lead to kidney injury and can progress to kidney failure.”

How To Stay Cool During One Of The World’s Hottest Anticipated Summers
With 2023 and 2024 having been the hottest summers on record, there’s reason to believe 2025 will bring more of the same.
But it doesn’t have to mean soaring energy bills or an overworked, outdated air conditioning system.
If you’re like many consumers, you’re looking for energy saving solutions, but may not be aware of all your options.
A Midea survey conducted by Atomik Research found that 76% of homeowners agree that they are more focused on energy efficiency now than they were five years ago.
At the same time, over half (54%) were unsure or unknowledgeable about the full capabilities of heat pumps, particularly their ability to provide both heating and cooling.
“Despite the name, heat pumps, are not just for heating, they’re also for cooling, and some of the latest models are engineered for even the toughest North American climates,” says David Rames, senior product manager at Midea.
“As more homeowners make upgrades to prepare
for
increasingly extreme temperatures, heat pumps
will be at the center of the shift.”
Unlike an air conditioner, which blasts cool air indoors, a heat pump actually removes hot air from the home and pumps it outside.
It does the opposite during winter, transferring heat indoors instead of creating it.
One model redefining what’s possible in heating and cooling is the Midea EVOX All Climate Heat Pump, which delivers high performance, energy savings, quiet operation, advanced filtration and year-round reliability.
Part of a system that was engineered to replace traditional gas furnaces, its dual-fuel compatibility and inverter-driven system is flexible, integrating seamlessly with existing gas furnaces to offer a cost-effective upgrade without the need for a complete system overhaul.
Many people assume a high-performance heat pump will fall outside their budget. But cost-savings in the form of rebates and lower bills can make it well worth the investment.
For example, in addition to delivering up to
32.5% energy savings compared to conventional HVAC units, those who install the Midea EVOX All Climate Heat Pump can qualify for up to $8,000 in federal rebates through the DOE Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) program.
So what else can you do to keep cool at home in summer in addition to switching to a nextgeneration, ultra-efficient heat pump?
Sealing air leaks is just as important in extreme heat as it is in extreme cold. A quick, DIY visual inspection can identify leaks.
And if needed, a professional inspection can give you a complete overview of how to improve your home’s efficiency.
You can also keep your home cooler by investing in energy efficient appliances that reduce byproduct heat emission.
Finally, in a heat wave, consider adjusting your habits. Limit the use of appliances such as the iron, oven and dryer to mornings and evenings, and use shades or blinds to reduce direct sunlight in your home’s spaces during the late morning and early afternoon.
With the right equipment and a few updates to your routine, you can stay cool at home all summer long. (StatePoint)
Elevate Your Bathroom with Everyday Touches of Luxury

With a few thoughtful updates, you can bring a renewed sense of calm and sophistication to one of the home’s most-used spaces.
If you’re considering a bathroom refresh, explore these expert ideas to help easily transform your space.
Refresh with a Sophisticated Palette
Start with a clean slate. A fresh coat of paint in a soft, neutral hue provides timeless elegance and flexibility, allowing your fixtures and finishes to shine.
Alternatively, create a focal point with a bold color or refined texture to anchor the room with personality – an easy first step in a luxury bathroom remodel.
Simple material swaps can bring new energy
to your space. These versatile elements can evolve with your style while maintaining a refined look.
Upgrade to Thoughtful Luxury
True luxury lies in the details and in daily rituals. Consider design-forward upgrades that elevate both comfort and hygiene. A onepiece bidet toilet delivers a spa-like experience through smart technology and minimalist design, making it a standout smart toilet option.
“WASHLET+ one-piece bidet toilets have become one of my go-to upgrades,” said Alena Capra, CMKBD, host of “SoFlo Home Project.” “They’re beautifully designed, surprisingly easy to install and instantly elevate a bathroom’s comfort and style.
The S7 and S7A WASHLET+ models feature a sleek, one-piece design and are the perfect blend of smart tech and timeless design, especially for homeowners prepping for summer guests.” (Continued On Page 09)
Beware The Double Click! Evaluate QR Codes To Protect Against Fraud
Ancient civilizations had hieroglyphics, we have QR codes: the patterned graphic boxes prompting you to access restaurant menus, pay for parking, find out information about a package and more.
Generally, quick response (QR) codes are safe, but they can be used to redirect you to malicious websites, so caution is important. Here’s how it works.
• You get prompted to use your device’s camera.
• You scan the code and a link pops up.
• You click the link, exposing you to threat actors
• You’re directed to apps, websites, locations using your maps and much more.
Bad actors understand people are in a rush, so this is an appealing form of attack. It’s a cost-efficient scam because these codes are easy to generate and distribute.
And they are creative in finding new ways to make them appear legitimate. In public places, criminals can cover an official code with a sticker or printout showing a fraudulent code. Some of the more prevalent and convincing scams include:
• Parking Ticket Scams. Criminals
place fake parking tickets with QR codes on windshields, causing unsuspecting victims to scan the code and click the link to learn of their offense and digitally pay the alleged fine.
• Brushing Scams. A criminal will ship goods you never ordered, then require you to scan the QR code
and click the link to see who sent you the gift.
• Payment Scams. Criminals cover a legitimate QR code with a sticker that has a fraudulent code that directs to a malicious site. This can happen at gas pumps, bank windows, parking lots, etc.
• Crypto Scams. Crypto transactions are often made through QR codes associated with crypto accounts, making this an appealing target for fraudsters, especially since once crypto payments are made, it’s unlikely those funds will be recovered.
Elevate Your Bathroom With Everyday Touches Of Luxury
(Continued From Page 08) Features such as warm-water cleansing, heated seats, air dryers and built-in deodorizers can transform everyday routines into spa-like experiences.
Some premium models with these innovations are now available through independent showrooms’ “Buy More, Save More” promotion, making it easier to upgrade multiple bathrooms while embracing comfort and sustainability.
Refine the Finishing Touches
Modernize your space by replacing outdated hardware with elevated styles.
Brushed metal or matte black finishes offer a contemporary edge while luxurious showerheads and touchless faucets enhance both innovative function and visual appeal.
Clarify with Purposeful Lighting
A well-designed bathroom deserves lighting that both flatters and functions.
Layered lighting such as dimmable sconces, task-specific fixtures and ambient sources adds visual depth and supports everything from morning routines to nighttime re-
laxation.
Maximize Utility with Integrated
Design
Keep your space feeling serene and uncluttered with discreet storage solutions.
Built-in cabinetry, recessed niches and custom shelving maintain visual harmony while keeping essentials within reach. Consider toekick drawers or mirrored cabinets for added functionality with style.
With small but intentional updates, your bathroom can become a peaceful space that reflects your personal style and enhances everyday living.

To stay safe when using QR codes:
• Check the URL: Once you scan and the link pops up, stop! Examine it for unusual domain names or shortened URLs before clicking.
• Verify the source: Only scan QR codes from trusted sources, like official websites or apps. Codes from unfamiliar sources are more likely to be malicious.
• Check for tampering: Look for signs of tampering, like altered graphics, design flaws or stickers placed atop original codes.
• Be suspicious: Treat sites asking for a password or login information as a red flag.
• Be wary of promotions: Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true.
• Use a secure connection: Look for a secure connection (HTTPS) or padlock.
• Confirm validity of request: Before taking action, like making a payment or entering personal information, confirm a request to scan with the company.
If you receive a QR code from someone you know, reach out to them through a known number or email to verify they sent it.
• Protect your device: Use antivirus and antimalware software.
• Report. If you identify a suspicious QR code or fall victim to a QR code scam, notify your bank and report it to law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
If you scan a fake QR code, your bank account, email and identity could all be at risk. For actions to take, consult PNC Bank’s Reporting Fraud page on pnc.com.
Cyber criminals are always finding new ways to defraud their victims, and QR codes are no exception.
With a little caution however, you can better protect yourself. (StatePoint)
Helpful Tips To Tackle Challenging Paint Projects
Some DIY projects are easier than others. Painting tricky areas like windows, curves, corners, murals and more might intimidate some painters, but don’t let difficulty deter you from transforming your home into a space you love. DIYers of all skill levels can complete tough paint projects with a few useful tips and the right tools.
Challenge 1: Windows
When facing any difficult painting project, like windows, preparation is critical. First, clean the wood trim with warm, soapy water and a cloth or sponge.
For wooden windows that will require paint application near the glass, don’t forget to wipe the win-
dowpanes with a glass cleaner.
Buildup on these surfaces can prevent painter’s tape from bonding to the surface, leaving room around
the edges for paint to seep through and creating unnecessary cleanup post-painting.
Once the surface is prepped, line each windowpane and the trim with painter’s tape, overlapping the edges in each corner for the tightest seal.
Challenge 2: Curves and Edges
A good multi-surface painter’s tape can help DIYers achieve professional results for most paint projects, but when it comes to unusual contours, it’s worth investing in a conformable painter’s tape, like FrogTape Advanced.
Made with thin but strong washi paper backing, the green tape lies flat while conforming to curved
Understanding The Hidden Dangers Of LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
(Continued From Page 04)
Know Your Number
You can reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke by knowing and addressing your LDL cholesterol number.
Working closely with your doctor allows you to actively manage high LDL cholesterol - often a key risk factor you can help control - and together, you can develop a personalized treatment plan.
Ask your doctor or health care provider for a cholesterol test to know your LDL number.
Understanding your cholesterol number is the first step toward managing it effectively. If necessary, appropriate management of your LDL cholesterol can help reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Your doctor may also talk with you about your personal and family medical history; previous heartrelated medical events such as a heart attack or stroke; lifestyle habits such as tobacco use, obesity, unhealthy living or aging; racial and ethnic backgrounds; and reproductive health. Lower is Better
When it comes to your cholesterol, guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend “lower is better” to reduce your risk.
Studies show that an LDL number or below 100 mg/dL is ideal for healthy adults.
If you have a history of heart attack or stroke and are already on a cholesterol-lowering medication, your doctor may aim for your LDL to be 70 mg/dL or lower.
Talk to your doctor about the right
treatment plan for you. Positive lifestyle habits, such as exercising and eating a healthy diet, may also help.
However, if you’ve had a heart attack or stroke before, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough to lower your risk of another event.
Your doctor may recommend cholesterol-lowering medications to protect your heart health.

areas, like around light fixtures, mantels, molding and fireplaces. It’s also treated with exclusive PaintBlock Technology to seal tape edges for clean, sharp paint lines.
Challenge 3: Corners and Trim
When painting a wall or ceiling, it’s not always easy to prevent paint bleed in the corners where adjacent walls or trim meet. Properly applying painter’s tape can simplify the task.
When painting the ceiling, apply tape to the wall around the perimeter of the room, keeping the tape flush with the line where the two areas meet, and overlap the tape in the corners.
A similar process can be followed when painting wood trim. When the project is complete, remove the tape slowly at a 45-degree angle while the paint is still wet for best results.
Challenge 4: Murals
Recent consumer research conducted by FrogTape discovered that one of the most popular painting trends for DIYers is nature-inspired faux wallpaper.
While more than half of people prefer painting a mural over applying wallpaper, 36% still say “not feeling confident in painting skills” is holding them back from trying this project.
Experienced painters may be confident enough to freehand a design, but those who are newer to the task can rely on painter’s tape or stencils to bring their vision to life.
Stencils can be used as a guide to create floral or leaf patterns, or DIYers can sketch the shapes and tape them off with painter’s tape to keep outlines crisply defined.
Painting is one of the most rewarding DIY projects, but don’t make it harder than it has to be.
These tips can help simplify your next paint project, no matter how complicated it might seem. (StatePoint)
Save A Life From Stroke
Strokes can happen to anyone, at any age - even young people. Despite being one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States, strokes are largely preventable, treatable and beatable - if you can control your risk factors.
According to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke.
Keeping blood pressure in check, living a healthy lifestyle and knowing stroke warning signs may help protect you and your loved ones.
Here are key insights from the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation.
Controlling Risk Factors
Up to 80% of strokes may be preventable, according to the American Stroke Association.
You can take action to prevent strokes by managing your risk factors, like high blood pressure, a leading cause and controllable risk factor for stroke and heart disease.

Circulation:
Other risk factors include diabetes and obesity, which can be kept in check with healthy lifestyle behaviors such as good nutrition.
Quitting smoking and being physically active are important.
Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, also increases stroke risk.
In fact, people with AFib are five times more likely to have a stroke, according to the American Heart Association.
Preventing a Second Stroke
Nearly 1 in 4 strokes occur in people who had a previous stroke, sometimes because they don’t know what caused the first, making identifying the cause of the stroke a key step toward future prevention.
Treatment depends on the type of stroke someone is having, which can be determined with a series of medical evaluations and tests.
Work with your health care professional to develop a plan that helps you move forward after a first stroke while preventing a second.
This plan should include controlling risk factors, like achieving and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
“Preventing a second stroke is possible with the right approach,” said Teresita Casanova, MD, HCA Healthcare affiliated neurologist
and American Stroke Association volunteer expert.
“Taking medicines as prescribed, monitoring health numbers, and making small, consistent lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
Stroke survivors should feel empowered to take control of their health and work with their care team to build a strong prevention plan.”
To help you in your journey, you can rely on tools such as the Heart & Stroke Helper, a free self-management app available for stroke survivors and their caregivers.
The app allows patients to oversee their health in one place with features that track progress on lifestyle habits, manage medications, track health numbers, provide information about stroke and allow patients to connect with others for inspiration.

Act F.A.S.T.: How to Detect Signs of Stroke
Most adults in the U.S. don’t know the stroke warning signs, nor that stroke is largely treatable if you call 911 as soon as you recognize the symptoms.
Learning the acronym F.A.S.T. can help you recognize that someone may be having stroke symptoms so you can take life-saving action.
F: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?
A: Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S: Speech. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand?
Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.”
T: Time to Call 911. If you or anyone else shows any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

India, US Eye Interim Trade
Pact Before July 8
(Continued From Page 01)
The official suggested this could involve introducing quotas or setting minimum import prices to protect domestic producers. While the rollback of the baseline tariffs requires U.S. Congressional approval, the administration retains the authority to lift the additional reciprocal tariffs for several countries, including India.
The US had announced the 26% tariff on Indian goods on April 2 but temporarily suspended its implementation for 90 days — a grace period that ends on July 9. Meanwhile, the original 10% baseline tariff on Indian exports remains in effect.
Both nations have also agreed to wrap up the first phase of a broader trade agreement by September or October this year. The long-term goal is to more than double bilateral trade volumes to $500 billion by 2030.
Despite ongoing hurdles — particularly India’s strict regulatory stance on genetically modified crops — New Delhi has expressed willingness to import select non-GM agricultural products from the U.S., such as alfalfa, as part of the discussions, it is reported. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
What Women Should Know About Their Heart, Kidney And Metabolic Health
Some women may be unaware they’re living with risks for heart disease, kidney disease and metabolic conditions like diabetes, which drive risk for cardiovascular disease.
The interplay among these conditions is called cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, according to the scientific experts at the American Heart Association. Consider these facts women should know about CKM syndrome.
Cardiovascular Disease is the No. 1 Killer of Women
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart disease and stroke, affects nearly 45% of women ages 20 and older, and 1 in 3 women will die from it, according to the association.
“Despite heart disease being the leading cause of death for women, most women are not aware of their risk for heart disease,” said Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, American Heart Association volunteer and a member of the science
advisory group for the association’s CKM Health Initiative, supported by founding sponsors Novo Nordisk and Boehringer Ingelheim and champion sponsor DaVita.
Women may develop heart disease differently than men and experience symptoms uncommon in men.
Women are more likely to have blockage in smaller blood vessels around the heart and, while chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom, women are more
likely than men to experience pain in the arms, jaw and neck, too. Early Action is Key
According to a study presented at an American Heart Association scientific conference, women with either Type 2 diabetes or chronic kidney disease are predicted to reach elevated risk for CVD 8-9 years earlier than women with neither condition while women with both conditions may reach high risk 26 years earlier.

Risk Factors are Connected
The health factors that comprise CKM syndrome are connected. They include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, excess weight, high blood glucose sugar and low kidney function. If something goes wrong in one area, it affects others.
“Knowing your health numbers is critical to optimize your CKM health and prioritize prevention of heart, kidney and metabolic disease,” said Khan, who is also the Magerstadt professor of cardiovascular epidemiology and an associate professor of cardiology and preventive medicine at Northwestern School of Medicine.
Since high blood pressure and early stages of kidney disease and diabetes often don’t have symptoms, regular screening is necessary to be aware of your risk.
Pregnancy and Menopause Affect Women’s CKM Health
Each pregnancy is a window into later heart and kidney health, according to Janani Rangaswami, M.D., FAHA, professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and co-chair of the scientific advisory group for the American Heart Association’s presidential advisory that defined CKM syndrome.
Pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension are risk factors for future chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, Rangaswami said.
Changes during menopause also influence long-term heart and metabolic health.
This includes declining estrogen levels, increased body fat around the organs, increased cholesterol levels and stiffening or weakening of blood vessels, per the American Heart Association.
Early menopause (before age 45) is linked to a higher risk for kidney disease, Type 2 diabetes and CVD.
“Women can mitigate those risks by getting appropriate treatment for their menopause symptoms,” Rangaswami said.
Social Factors Affect Women’s Health
Negative economic, environmental and psychosocial factors are associated with lower levels of preventive health behaviors like physical activity and healthy eating and higher levels of conditions like obesity and diabetes. Some factors affect women differently than men.
For example, marriage is associated with worse health for women, and women are more likely than men to delay medical care because of costs, according to an American Heart Association scientific statement.
Women are also more likely to have their health concerns dismissed, Khan said.
Women should know their risk and self-advocacy is critical. They should request thorough screenings that assess heart, kidney and metabolic health at visits with their health care providers. Visit heart. org/myCKMhealth to learn more.

5 Tips For Better Virtual Business
Spending a good portion of each day on camera is no longer a job description reserved for the rich and famous. Working professionals across a wide range of industries spend more time than ever on video chats and virtual meetings.
The ultra-connected working world has distinct advantages, especially for those who wish to work from the comfort of home, but the connectivity comes with a price. While meeting fatigue is a familiar workplace challenge, video fatigue brings a new layer of challenges, including the pressure of always being “on” with a camera sitting mere inches from your face.
Avoid exhaustion, burnout and digital eye strain from a rigorous video meeting schedule with these tips from ZEISS Vision Care:
Avoid digital eye strain: Back-toback virtual meetings can leave your eyes dry and exhausted. The
most important consideration in protecting your eyes is taking frequent breaks. Experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This lets your eyes rest and minimizes the physical and mental exhaustion of screen time.
Create a comfortable setting: There’s nothing worse than realizing halfway through an important meeting you’re either too hot or too
Rather than visibly disrupting the meeting, make sure you have what you need to adjust your climate in easy reach, such as a fan you can flip on or a blanket you can pull over your lap. Invest in a chair you’re content to sit in for extended periods of time, and if you’re prone to fidgeting, be sure to get up and move around before your meeting starts. Look your best: It’s human nature
to worry about your appearance on camera, so take a few minutes before the meeting to smooth your hair and straighten your collar. Wearing video-ready attire and accessories can put you ahead of the game. One example is incorporating subtle style such as eyeglasses featuring ZEISS DuraVision Gold UV AR.
This high-clarity, anti-reflective lens coating has a striking gold residual reflectance that radiates luxury, elegance and sophistication. The coating also offers several functional advantages including durability, improved cleanability, reduced blue light reflections and enhanced clarity in low-light conditions.
Eliminate disruptions: It’s not easy to stay focused and engaged in a video meeting when you have noise and disruptions in your background. In fact, it’s a good way to get flustered.
Turn off your music and mute your phone. Put curious cats and friendly pups in a safe place, and if you share your workspace, consider closing your door and hanging a sign that indicates a meeting is in progress. Be mindful of lighting and angles: Lighting that comes from behind your screen will illuminate your face without awkward shadows. Avoid overhead lights or a table lamp behind you if possible.
When it comes to setting your camera, be sure it sits at eye level or slightly above for the most flattering angle. A good rule of thumb is to have the same portion of your upper body (head and shoulders) visible as you would in a traditional head shot photo so your colleagues don’t have a close-up of your face the entire meeting. With the donations, our team came together on April 27th at the AARC. In which we assembled approximately 100 toiletry bags.
Each of our bags was handmade with love for people going through these hard times.
The bags are scheduled to be picked up in May and will be included in care packages that will be distributed in both Austin and San Antonio.
We are proud to contribute to a cause that brings relief and support to those affected by breast cancer, and we’re grateful to everyone who donated or volunteered their time to make this possible!
We’d also like to give a special shoutout to one of our incredible teen volunteers, Tanvi. As part of the donation drive, Tanvi played a key role in organizing breast can-
cer care supplies.
Community members dropped off items at her house, and she took the time to thoughtfully sort and group everything.
Her dedication and attention to detail made the care bag packing process much smoother and more organized.
We’re so grateful for her help and heart! If you would like to be apart of more of these community services please visit saiva.org.
We’re always looking forward to having more volunteers to help support our cause and help with community service!
Angry Delhi Suspends Indus Treaty, Plans Water Projects To Benefit India
(Continued From Page 01)
While these rivers were largely earmarked for Pakistani use under the treaty, India is now reasserting its right to harness them more fully for domestic benefit.
One of the most ambitious proposals involves doubling the length of the historic Ranbir Canal, built in the 19th century, from 60 km to 120 km.
The expanded canal would boost India’s ability to divert up to 150 cubic meters of water per second from the Chenab—water that eventually flows into Pakistan’s agricultural heartland.
The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank and hailed as one of the most resilient international water-sharing agreements,
Reuters pointed out, has withstood
multiple wars and decades of animosity between the two nations.
It allocates the eastern rivers— Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—to India, and the western rivers—Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum—largely to Pakistan, while allowing India limited non-consumptive use of the latter.
But with a changing geopolitical climate and rising domestic demands, Delhi is signaling that the status quo may no longer be sustainable.
India is permitted under the treaty to draw limited water from these rivers for irrigation and “run-ofthe-river” hydroelectric projects but has historically underutilized these rights.
The current plans, including new canal and dam infrastructure, reflect a strategic shift.
“Water and blood cannot flow together,” Modi declared in a fiery speech, an apparent signal of the government’s hardening stance, though he did not name the treaty directly.
Union Water Minister C.R. Paatil reinforced the message on May 16, stating, “We will try to ensure that not a drop of water goes out.”
Behind the scenes, the Ministry of Jal Shakti is reviewing proposals to redistribute water from the Indus system across northern Indian states.
This includes not only expanded irrigation canals but also the development of large-scale water storage infrastructure—potentially a first for India within the Indus basin.
According to Reuters, at least five storage projects are under consideration, with four located on tributaries of the Chenab and Jhelum.
Pakistan, which relies on the Indus system for about 80% of its agriculture and the majority of its hydropower, has reacted strongly.
In April, following India’s suspension of the treaty, Islamabad warned that any attempt to divert water could be viewed as an “act of war.” (Courtesy: https://indiawest. com/)
Thinking About Renovating? Check With Your Building Department First
From updating an outdated kitchen to adding a home office, home renovations can be exciting. Before you dive in, it’s critical to understand the local safety requirements that impact your projects.
The International Code Council’s annual Building Safety Month campaign raises awareness about the role that building codes play in keeping us all safe and the important work done by building safety professionals, including those in your local building department.
Kevin McOsker, the Code Council’s vice president of Technical Resources, offers advice to help you renovate safely:
First, Meet With Your Local Building Department
Before beginning any home improvement project, you’ll want to meet with your local building department.
They can walk you through the local building codes as well as the process for obtaining permits and inspections.
Failing to meet the requirements outlined in the code can result in unsafe living conditions, failed inspections or costly rework.

How Women Experience Heart Disease Differently
Most people think of heart attacks as debilitating pain in the chest. However, that’s not always the case, especially for women, and missing the signs can be a matter of life and death.
Although heart disease is the leading cause of death among American women, according to the American Heart Association, symptoms are often overlooked or explained away as less worrisome conditions.
“Men and women experience many aspects of life differently, and heart disease is no exception,” said LeAnne Bloedon, MS, RD, vice president of clinical development, Esperion Therapeutics.
“Symptoms of a heart attack aren’t as obvious as many women think, and failing to recognize the danger and get help can have catastrophic results.”
One heart disease risk factor, for example, is high LDL cholesterol. Often referred to as a “silent killer,” it doesn’t always present noticeable symptoms.
In fact, data suggests women with high LDL cholesterol are not diagnosed or treated as early or aggressively as men, which can put women at an increased risk
for cardiovascular events.
Understanding how men’s and women’s risk and symptoms differ may help identify and treat a serious heart health problem before it causes lasting damage.
Anatomy Differences
Some differences between men and women are present in the body’s internal systems, including the cardiovascular system. Women generally have smaller hearts and narrower blood vessels.
This can affect heart health in numerous ways, including less efficient stress responses and greater risk of widespread plaque buildup, especially in smaller vessels, called microvasculature, which can pose treatment challenges.
Cholesterol Buildup Hormones influence aspects of the body’s function, including cholesterol levels. Estrogen, a female sex hormone, raises HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
This may be why women tend to have more HDL cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol than men, especially before they reach menopause, though inherited high cholesterol can affect women of all ages.
“It’s critical to raise awareness about the importance of measuring LDL cholesterol, diagnosing high cholesterol and treating elevated LDL cholesterol per guidelines and individual patient needs,” Bloedon said.
Risk Factors
While there are shared risk factors for heart disease among men and women (such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes), some risk factors disproportionately affect women.
For example, uncontrolled cholesterol in women, particularly after menopause, can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Safe Summer Fun In The Sun
Summer is the season of sun-kissed memories - backyard barbecues, sandy beaches, bike rides and late-night stargazing. However, the warmer months bring unique safety challenges that can catch active families off guard if they’re not prepared.
From sunburns to scraped knees and dehydration to bug bites, summer’s surprises don’t have to slow you down. With a few simple precautions and the right tools on hand - like reliable first-aid essentials - you can make safety second nature and keep your focus where it belongs: on making the most of every sunny moment.
Here are a few smart, easy tips from the experts at CURAD to help your family stay protected from the sun, heat, water hazards and the inevitable bumps and bruises from outdoor play.
Shield Your Skin from Harmful Rays
The summer sun can be harsh, making it important to take steps to prevent sunburn, even if it’s partly cloudy or overcast.
If you plan to be outside for more than 15 minutes, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before heading outdoors.
Remember to reapply to all exposed skinincluding overlooked spots like your ears, neck and tops of feet - every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
Wearing protective clothing, such as widebrimmed hats, sunglasses and light, longsleeved shirts, can also help shield you from harmful UV rays. When possible, seek shade during peak sun hours, typically 10 a.m.-4 p.m., to minimize direct exposure.
Be Prepared for Summer Scrapes Accidents can happen anytime, especially during active summer days. Having a well-
heart disease, you can understand the risks and take proactive steps,” Bloedon said.
“Commit to a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle. Exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet with limits on processed foods, sugar, sodium and alcohol. Take any medications as directed by your health care provider.”
Statins, which reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver and lower cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, are the medications most often prescribed to help manage high LDL cholesterol.
While generally well-tolerated, statin intolerance (the inability to take a statin at any dose or the recommended dose) does occur in some patients and is more common in women.
Talk with your doctor about other steps you can take to manage elevated LDL cholesterol levels and learn more about women’s heart health at goredforwomen.org.
Symptoms of Heart Attacks in Women Women’s experiences with heart disease may be quite different from men.
For example, according to the Heart Disease Foundation, women are likely to be older when they experience a heart attack. They may also attribute symptoms to other conditions, such as diabetes or arthritis.
stocked first-aid kit, including bandages, antiseptic wipes and ointments, can help you quickly address minor cuts, scrapes and blisters.
It’s important to have the right bandages on hand for every situation. Bandages made with breathable and lightweight fabric and a four-sided seal are perfect for those hot summer days.
While bandages infused with natural ingredients like soothing aloe vera, vitamin E and baking soda offer a fresh approach to healing.
Proven to aid in faster healing, hydrocolloid bandages, like those infused with aloe vera from the CURAD Naturals line, offer waterproof protection that helps cushion and seal out dirt and germs for multiple days.
By sealing in moisture, hydrocolloid bandages help promote the optimal healing environment. (Continued On Page 17)
Further complicating matters, several diseases mimic heart attacks so getting to the root of the problem can be tricky. Women are more apt than men to experience a coronary spasm, coronary dissection or broken heart syndrome.
What to Watch For:
* Like men, women experiencing a heart attack may notice prolonged or reoccurring chest pain or pressure.
* In women, that pain may extend to the arms, back, neck, jaw and stomach.
* Some women experience shortness of breath with no chest pain at all.
* Other symptoms women are more likely to report can be easily mistaken for other conditions. Some of these signs include unexplained fatigue, disruptions to normal sleep patterns, lightheadedness, nausea and cold sweats.

Safe Summer Fun In The Sun
(Continued From Page 16)
Keep the Fluids Flowing in the Heat
During the summer months, the heat can quickly lead to dehydration, which can cause dizziness, headaches and even heat stroke. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to stay hydrated. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water (8 ounces each) each day, or more if you’re going to be spending an extended amount of time outdoors or engaging in physical activities like hiking, biking or playing sports.
Keeping a refillable water bottle with you can make it easier to stay hydrated on the go and replenish the water your body loses through sweat. In addition to water, consuming hydrating foods like watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers and bell peppers can help maintain your fluid levels and regulate your body’s temperature. Also avoid excessive consumption of caffeinated or alcoholic bever-
ages, which can contribute to dehydration.
Keep Pesky Insects at Bay Summer evenings are perfect for outdoor activities, but they can also attract mosquitoes, ticks and other pests. Protect yourself and your family by applying insect repellent on top of your sunscreen to all exposed skin and loose-fitting clothing. Reapply as needed, according to the instructions on the package.
Repellant fans, candles, torches
and bracelets may be good alternatives to spray or roll-on insect repellants. Wearing long sleeves and pants, especially in wooded or grassy areas, can also help prevent bug bites. Remember to check for ticks after spending time outdoors and, if found, promptly remove them by using clean tweezers and pulling straight upward. Avoid twisting, squeezing or burning ticks, which can lead to the release of saliva or cause the head to break off.
Have Fun in the Water, Safely Summer is the perfect time to hit the pool, beach or lake, but remember to prioritize safety while enjoying the water. Always swim in designated areas and never swim alone. If supervising children, ensure they are within an arm’s reach and wearing properly fitting flotation devices.
Avoid alcohol when swimming or supervising swimmers, as it can impair your judgment and reac-
tion times, and be aware of your surroundings, including weather conditions and water currents. Enrolling kids in swimming lessons can also contribute to a safer experience in the water.
Visit Curad.com for more resources to help you safely enjoy your summer adventures.
Building Your Summer Scrape Kit
A summer first-aid scrape kit can be a lifesaver for those inevitable bumps, bruises and blisters. Keep your family’s kit in a waterproof case and in an easily accessible place, such as your car, pool bag or home first-aid cabinet. Make sure to keep it stocked with essentials for cuts, scrapes, burns, blisters and beyond, such as:
* Antiseptic wipes for cleaning wounds
* Antibiotic or antimicrobial ointment to help prevent buildup of bacteria
* Bandages like CURAD Naturals
Hydrocolloids with Aloe Vera to treat minor cuts, scrapes and blisters
* Non-latex gloves to protect hands from dirt and germs

Could Your Fatigue And Breathing Symptoms Be EGPA?
An estimated 5,000 people in the United States are living with Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare form of vasculitis that causes inflammation or swelling in the small and medium blood vessels.
While it can cause damage to organs throughout the body, it most often affects the lungs.
The American Lung Association’s new EGPA Educational Campaign, provided with support from AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline, strives to educate people living with EGPA, and their families and caregivers about this serious, but treatable disease. Here’s what they want you to know:
Symptoms are varied: EGPA can manifest differently based on what organs are affected. However, nearly everyone living with EGPA will experience these signs and symptoms:
• Feeling frequently ill and tired
• Loss of appetite, resulting in weight loss
• Fever
• Asthma and/or sinus polyps
• A higher-than-normal level of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell
Patients may also experience shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain, rashes, muscle and joint pain, nasal discharge, facial pain, abdominal pain or bloody stools, numbness or loss of strength, tingling in hands and feet, and kidney disease.
Persistence, patience are key to diagnosis: Timely diagnosis and treatment are critical to optimally managing and minimizing symptoms.
But getting the right diagnosis may take years, and involve a clinical exam, blood tests to check your white blood count, a urinalysis, a chest X-ray or CT scan, and a biopsy. Those who have been through the process say it can be frustrat-
ing, and that persistence is needed to get proper care.
“My first EGPA symptoms included severe adult-onset asthma, congestion due to nasal and sinus polyps, arm pain due to neuropathy, and urticaria – a condition that causes hives.
Despite being a physician myself and asking repeatedly if I had EGPA, I didn’t receive the right diagnosis and treatment for 2.5 years.
Eventually I paid out of pocket to see an EGPA expert and enrolled in an EGPA clinical trial. After various medication adjustments, I am now 10 years out from diagnosis, and have had no active symptoms for 5 years,” says Dr. Anne Tournay, an EGPA patient.
Treatment can help: There is no cure, but treatment can reduce symptoms, decrease the risk of organ damage, and improve your quality of life. Because EGPA can affect multiple organs, you may need to work with more than one
healthcare provider. They’ll review your disease severity, the organs involved, current medications, and other health conditions.
Medications may be prescribed, such as anti-inflammatories, which help reduce swelling in the body, immunosuppressants, which can lower your immune system’s activity, and biologics, which target inflammation caused by eosinophils.
Lifestyle changes support management: Good health practices, like keeping vaccinations up to date, eating a well-balanced diet, staying active and getting adequate sleep can help you feel your best.
It is also important to quit smoking, to avoid secondhand smoke and to protect yourself from fumes, dust and chemicals. Other strategies include tracking any new, worsening or changing EGPA side effects or symptoms, managing your asthma and seeing your healthcare provider regularly.
Support is available: EGPA is rare,
but you’re not alone. Get your questions answered and find support:
• Contact the Lung Helpline at 1-800-LUNGUSA, where you can talk to trained lung health professionals and receive a free health journal.

A Breakthrough Making Grass Seed Smarter And Lawns Greener
In neighborhoods across the country, homeowners are getting extra help in their quest for the elusive, perfect lawn.
The secret? An innovation in grass seed technology known as OptiGrowth, promising faster, stronger and more resilient grass - and it’s living up to the hype.
What is the Technology?
A revolutionary, natural seed treatment, OptiGrowth is a unique technology designed to enhance the performance of grass seed, giving it a higher chance of success.
It coats traditional grass seed in a protective, moisture-attracting layer designed to retain moisture and kickstart healthy growth without harming the environment.
Developed through years of agricultural research, this technology enhances the natural germination process, giving each seed a better chance to sprout, grow and survive early, tough conditions.
It uses water more efficiently, develops stronger roots and shoots, and helps seeds survive in drought, poor soil conditions and extreme
temperatures. Unlike traditional uncoated grass seed, which can struggle in lessthan-ideal soil conditions or unpredictable weather, seed treated with this technology is designed to thrive.
It’s not genetically modified; instead, it’s a smarter version of existing seeds, treated to improve their natural abilities, which leads to faster growth, better health and a thicker, more resilient lawn.
Faster-Growing, Healthier Lawns
One of the biggest advantages of this coated seed is speed. Under ideal conditions, these seeds may germinate faster than untreated seeds.
The faster sprouting reduces the vulnerable window when new grass can be overtaken by weeds, dried out by sun or washed away by heavy rains.
Grass seedlings also emerge healthier and develop deeper roots more quickly, setting the stage for a thicker, more resilient lawn. In the early stages, when most lawn failures happen, OptiGrowth seed can better resist stresses like drought, heat and foot traffic.
“New grass is incredibly delicate,” said Troy Hake, owner of Outsidepride.com, an online seed company specializing in a wide variety of high-quality grass seed, flower seeds and lawn and garden-related products at competitive prices.
“OptiGrowth provides seeds with a built-in advantage: helping more seed survive and thrive. It’s like giving each seed its own personal water bottle and first-aid kit.”
Water Efficiency is a Key Advantage
As water conservation becomes increasingly important, another major benefit of this seed is improved water usage.
The seed coating absorbs and retains moisture more efficiently around each seed, so homeowners can water less during the critical establishment period when the seed is most vulnerable to drying out.
The moisture-holding properties ensure the seed remains hydrated for longer periods, helping it sprout and establish strong roots.
In trials conducted by several university agricultural departments, lawns seeded with OptiGrowth needed up to 30% less water to reach full establishment compared to lawns planted with traditional seed.
“For areas prone to drought or wa-
tering restrictions, that’s a major win - both for homeowners’ wallets and the environment,” Hake said.
When Utilizing the Technology Makes Sense
While the coated seed is effective in almost any planting situation, it’s especially beneficial in challenging conditions. The coating acts as a shield, protecting the seed from stresses such as temperature fluctuations, heavy rains and dry spells.
New lawns on sloped ground, areas with patchy sun and shade, or lawns planted in late spring or early fall - times when weather can be unpredictable - benefit the most.
These seeds are designed to succeed even when conditions aren’t ideal by improving moisture retention and boosting germination rates. This means less time reseeding, rewatering and repairing your lawn.
However, Hake notes that in perfect conditions - rich soil, regular rain, mild temperatures - traditional high-quality grass seed can still perform well.
“If you’re planting in ideal conditions and you can baby the lawn with watering and care, you might not need OptiGrowth,” Hake said. “But in most cases, perfect conditions are rare.”
A Greener Future
As innovations like OptiGrowth make their way into more products, it’s clear the future of lawn care is working smarter, not harder.
These seeds have a built-in advantage - they grow faster, stay hydrated better, have fewer bald spots, require less reseeding and survive tougher conditions, leading to a greener, healthier lawn requiring less effort from you.

Healing Ozone Hole Could Restore Ocean’s Carbon Absorption
LONDON (ANI) – Researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have found that the damage caused by the ozone hole to the Southern Ocean’s ability to absorb carbon can be reversed—but only if greenhouse gas emissions are sharply reduced.
The Southern Ocean plays an outsized role in the global climate system, absorbing vast amounts of atmospheric carbon.
But its capacity to do so has been weakened in recent decades due
to stronger winds driven by ozone depletion.
These winds stir up deep, carbonrich waters, reducing the ocean’s ability to soak up additional carbon from the air.
Now, as the ozone layer recovers thanks to the 1987 Montreal Protocol, scientists say this damaging trend could be reversed.
However, continued increases in greenhouse gases may reignite the problem by intensifying wind pat-
terns once again.
“Our study shows that the Southern Ocean’s recovery is possible,” said Dr. Tereza Jarnikova, lead author and researcher at UEA’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. “But only if we keep greenhouse gas emissions low.”
Using advanced computer models, the team simulated various scenarios combining ozone recovery and different levels of greenhouse gas emissions from 1950 to 2100.
The results show that while the influence of the ozone hole is fading, emissions will increasingly determine how much carbon the ocean can absorb in the future.
The study, published in Science Advances, underscores a key message: cutting emissions is essential not just to reduce warming, but also to restore vital natural systems that help keep the climate in balance.

$1.5 Billion India Push Strengthens Apple’s Shift From China To Chennai
(Continued From Page 01)
The investment, confirmed in a filing on the London Stock Exchange, involves Foxconn’s Singapore-based subsidiary acquiring 12.77 billion shares of Yuzhan Technology India at 10 rupees each—bringing the total value of the deal to $1.5 billion.
This substantial infusion comes as Apple continues to expand its manufacturing footprint in India, now seen as a major alternative production hub.
President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods have raised concerns about rising iPhone prices and fragile supply chains.
In response, Apple has gradually shifted production away from China, with around 600 tons of
iPhones—valued at $2 billion— exported from India to the United States in March alone.
Yuzhan Technology India, based in Tamil Nadu, plays a pivotal role in this transition.

Thinking About Renovating? Check With Your Building Department First
(Continued From Page 14)
To contact your local building department, start with your city or county’s official website and look for the building or planning department. You can also call your city hall or visit in person.
Remember, building departments want to help make your project a success. Some building departments even have approved details and drawings to assist you with simple permits, construction and inspections.
When reaching out, ask:
• Do I need a permit for this type of work?
• How much does the permit cost?
• Are there specific code requirements in my area?
• How do I schedule inspections and when should they happen?
Next, Secure a Permit and Inspection
A building permit is an official approval that allows you to proceed with a renovation or construction project. Permits are crucial because they ensure your project is safe and in compliance with local building codes and regulations. These regulations are designed to keep you safe from hazards inside the building as well as protect you from extreme weather events.
Skipping the permit process can lead to additional fees, stop-work orders or even complications when selling your home. In some jurisdictions, it may even be a misdemeanor offense that could carry significant fines.
Once you’ve secured a building permit, you’ll need an inspection. Building inspections are an official review of your renovation at key milestones during the construction process. They’re conducted by a certified professional to confirm that the work being done complies with local building code requirements.
Common Home Renovation Mistakes
• Skipping Permits to Save Time or Costs: Skipping permits often leads to greater expenses later if youre fined, assessed additional fees or could even require you to redo completed construction work at your expense.
• Assuming Minor Changes Don’t Require Approval: Even small updates can greatly impact safety and need permits and inspections.
• Hiring Unlicensed Contractors: They may not follow the code, have no license to perform the work and usually do not carry any insurance, which puts your project and your home at risk. Licensed contractors are accountable to the licensing board, just like your doctor.
• Failing to Schedule Necessary Inspections: Without a final sign-off, your project may be considered incomplete, non-compliant or worse – create an unsafe condition.
Use Building Safety Professionals as a Resource
By working with your local building department, you can ensure your project meets standards, avoids legal issues and creates a safe space for everyone in your home. (StatePoint)

India’s Supreme Court Rejects Residency Claims By Refugees And Immigrants
India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – As America grapples with deportations and illegal immigration, where India is on the other side of the coin, on May 19, in a sharply worded decision, the Supreme Court of India reaffirmed that foreign nationals—whether refugees, immigrants, or former militants—do not have an automatic right to remain in the country.
Dismissing a plea by a Sri Lankan Tamil man facing deportation, the Court signaled once again its hardline stance on non-citizens seeking refuge in India.
“This is not a dharamshala that can accommodate everyone,” remarked Justice Dipankar Dutta, citing the strain of India’s population and legal limitations. “We are
already a country of 140 crore.”
The comment came as the Court rejected a petition challenging a
Madras High Court order that directed the deportation of the man.

His counsel pointed highlighted his family situation: an ailing wife and a child with a serious heart condition, both living in India. But the Court was unpersuaded.
The ruling reflects a consistent judicial approach in recent years, including in cases involving Rohingya
refugees.
In 2021, the Supreme Court allowed the deportation of Rohingyas detained in Jammu, despite concerns from human rights groups and the United Nations about the threat of violence they might face upon return to Myanmar.
Now, with the Sri Lankan case, the Court has again made clear that India is not obliged to provide indefinite refuge.
The judgment noted that the petitioner could seek asylum in another country, but India is not bound to accommodate him. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
Weaving The Spirit Of A People: Naga Handloom Thriving In Manipur’s Hills
India-West News Desk
IMPHAL – In the misty hill districts of Manipur, far from the clamour of cities, looms hum quietly in village courtyards.
Here, in places like Tamenglong and Ukhrul, the Nagas—Manipur’s third-largest ethnic group—are keeping centuries-old traditions alive, thread by thread.
In Tamenglong, home to the Zeliangrong Naga tribe, handloom weaving is more than
a craft; it is a lifeline of cultural continuity.
Women sit at backstrap looms, transforming silk and cotton into vivid stories of heritage and identity.
Each garment, from the iconic phanek (wraparound skirt) to ceremonial shawls, bears motifs passed down through generations—symbols of status, ritual, and memory.
“We work here making traditional clothes. It takes one to two days to weave a piece of fabric, which requires a lot of effort,” says handicraft artist Thinglung Lio.
“We make clothes for both women and men. Prices start around three thousand rupees
and increase depending on the complexity of the work.”
In her modest weaving unit, hand-spun threads in deep reds, earthy blacks, and bold whites—colours often associated with tribal storytelling—are twisted into patterns that reflect the spirit of the land and its people.
These are not just garments, but statements of identity, worn proudly at festivals, weddings, and rites of passage.
Yet, like much of Manipur’s traditional economy, the handloom sector has not been immune to the challenges of conflict and economic instability. In recent years, political unrest slowed production and fractured supply chains.
“For about one and a half years, business was slow,” recalls Thotreichan Zimik, who runs a handloom cluster in Ukhrul.
“But over the last five to six months, demand has picked up. Our workers are now busy from morning till evening.”
This cautious revival signals more than a return to business—it marks a renewed invest-
ment in cultural resilience.
The state government and NGOs have supported artisan clusters through training programs, and online platforms have begun showcasing Manipuri textiles to broader markets across India.
Though exports are still modest, e-commerce is opening new doors. Younger designers are blending traditional motifs with contemporary cuts, appealing to both urban buyers and diasporic communities seeking a connection to their roots.
This fusion of heritage and innovation is helping the handloom sector attract fresh attention—without compromising its soul.
As Manipur weaves its way through modernity and memory, its textile traditions stand not just as artifacts of the past, but as evolving expressions of identity and artistry.
In the steady hands of artisans like Thinglung Lio and Thotreichan Zimik, each woven thread becomes a quiet act of preservation—and a loud affirmation of who they are. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
Algae, Flower, Mineral-Based Food Dyes Are Ok Says FDA
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three new color additives for use in food products, expanding the range of natural-source colors available to manufacturers. The newly authorized additives include:
Galdieria extract blue, a blue pigment derived from the red algae Galdieria sulphuraria, approved for use in non-alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, candy, breakfast cereal coatings, ice cream, and frozen dairy desserts. This application was submitted by French company Fermentalg.
Butterfly pea flower extract, a natural blue
color obtained through water extraction of the plant’s dried petals.
Already approved in certain products, the FDA’s May 9 ruling extends its use to readyto-eat cereals, crackers, snack mixes, and chips. The extract can produce a spectrum of shades, from vivid blues to purples and greens.
Calcium phosphate, which provides a white color, has been approved for use in readyto-eat chicken products, white candy melts, doughnut sugar, and sugar coatings for candy.
Following the announcement, Health Secre-
tary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary reiterated the agency’s broader goal to phase out synthetic food dyes.
They emphasized plans to revoke authorizations for certain artificial additives and collaborate with industry leaders to voluntarily remove others.
“For too long, our food system has relied on synthetic, petroleum-based dyes that offer no nutritional value and pose unnecessary health risks,” Kennedy stated. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
At $86.1 Billion, India Ranks Fifth In Global Military Spending
NEW DELHI — Global military spending surged to an unprecedented $2.72 trillion in 2024, marking the tenth consecutive year of growth, with the sharpest increase since 1988, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
India remains the fifth-largest military spender globally, allocating $86.1 billion to its armed forces, as highlighted in SIPRI’s latest report, Trends in World Military Expenditure, 2024, released on April 28.
While India’s military budget saw a modest 1.6% increase from 2023, it has risen by a
significant 42% since 2015. This growth reflects India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military in response to regional security
Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ Could Cost Indians $1.6 Billion In Remittance Tax
India-West News Desk
WASHINGTON, DC — A sweeping new bill proposed by President Donald Trump could sharply increase the cost of sending money back home for millions of Indians living in the United States.
Late on May 18, the House Budget Committee advanced the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a comprehensive 1,116-page legislative package that includes a provision: a 5% excise tax on all international remittances made by non-U.S. citizens. The tax would apply to individuals on temporary work visas, such as H-1B and L-1 holders, as well as green card holders who have not yet obtained citizenship.
es a five percent excise tax on remittance transfers which will be paid for by the sender with respect to such transfers.”
The law also places the responsibility of collecting and forwarding the tax on remittance service providers, who must remit it quarterly to the U.S. Treasury.
The bill’s scope is not limited to personal remittances — it also covers transfers of investment income and stock option proceeds, channels often used by non-resident Indians to support families or invest in India.
The proposed tax would be deducted at the point of transfer, with no exemption for small amounts — meaning even modest remittances would be affected. Only “verified U.S. senders” — defined as U.S. citizens or nationals — would be exempt.
For the Indian diaspora, the financial impact could be significant. According to a March 2025 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) remittance survey, nearly $32 billion was sent from the United States to India in the 2023–24 fiscal year. Under the proposed tax, this could translate to over $1.6 billion in annual remittance levies borne by the Indian community in America.
The provision states: “This provision impos-
India has been the world’s largest recipient of remittances since 2008, according to the World Bank. In 2024 alone, India received an estimated $129 billion in remittances, accounting for 14% of global flows. The United States is the single largest source, contributing nearly a quarter of those funds.
The Indian population — now estimated at 5.4 million, including 3.3 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) by India’s foreign ministry, is expected to bear a huge share of the burden if the bill becomes law. A majority of this population is still on temporary work visas or permanent residency status and would not qualify for exemption. (Courtesy: https:// indiawest.com/)
challenges, particularly with neighboring nations. India’s defense spending now stands at 2.3% of its GDP.
In 2024, the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and India accounted for 60% of global military expenditure, with the U.S. spending a staggering $997 billion, nearly 12 times India’s budget. China’s military budget, at $314 billion, is roughly 3.6 times India’s, and continues to grow rapidly.
Despite ranking fifth in military spending, India remains heavily reliant on arms imports, especially for advanced systems like combat aircraft. To address this, the Indian government has enacted policies aimed at reducing dependence on foreign arms. By
earmarking 75% of its capital expenditure to domestic military procurement, India has made strides in building its defense industrial base.
India’s drive for domestic defense production has significant implications for its economic landscape. While the government has made substantial investments in the defense sector, this focus on military spending could impact the social sector.
Redirecting funds toward defense priorities — including advanced arms production — raises concerns about the potential squeeze on vital social programs like healthcare and education, which are also critical to the country’s long-term development.
As India continues to push for a stronger domestic defense manufacturing base, the report noted, its reliance on imports for some advanced systems persists. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
India Fires Back At China’s Renaming Attempts In Arunachal
NEW DELHI, (ANI) – India has firmly rejected China’s baseless and absurd attempts to rename places within the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated on May 14 that these maneuvers would not alter the fact that Arunachal Pradesh is, was, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India.
Responding to media queries regarding China’s renaming efforts, Jaiswal emphasized, “We have noticed that China has persisted with its vain and preposterous attempts to name places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
Consistent with our principled position, we reject such attempts categorically.”
He further added that this “creative naming” would not change the undeniable reality of Arunachal Pradesh’s status as an inseparable part of India.
India has consistently rebuffed China’s unfounded claims to rename Indian territories, reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh is, was, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of the nation. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
