50 Or Older? The Pneumococcal Pneumonia Vaccine Is Recommended For You

Pneumococcal pneumonia is a potentially serious bacterial lung disease that can disrupt your life for weeks and even land you in the hospital. Medical experts want you to know that there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of serious illness.

An important step is getting pneumococcal vaccination if it’s recommended for you. This vaccine helps protect against pneumococcal disease, including, pneumococcal pneumonia, bloodstream infection (bacteremia), and infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).

In October 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its adult immunization schedules, and now recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all adults 50 or older, even if you

are healthy, and maintains its recommendation of vaccination for adults 19-49 with certain underlying medical conditions like asthma, COPD, chronic heart disease and diabetes.

“The immune system naturally weakens with age, so even if you’re

healthy and active, being older puts you at greater risk of severe illness from pneumococcal pneumonia. The CDC’s updated guidelines are intended to keep more people healthy and safe,” says Albert A. Rizzo, MD, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association.

The American Lung Association maintains an ongoing educational program about pneumococcal pneumonia with Pfizer. As part of the program, they are sharing these fast facts:

• Anyone can get pneumococcal pneumonia and unfortunately, it is a disease you can have more than one time. Certain populations are at higher risk for severe illness, hospitalization and death. You can use American Lung Association resources to help you determine your risk.

• The symptoms of pneumococcal pneumonia include fever, chills, cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing or rapid breathing, and these symptoms can appear suddenly and without warning.

• Having the flu increases the like-

Are Your Financial Investments Good For The Planet?

Did you know that a thoughtful investment strategy can go beyond simply delivering big returns? Financial professionals say that with some careful consideration, it can also reflect your values.

To help you get started, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals answer some commonly asked questions about how to align your finances with what matters most to you:

How can I be a responsible investor? Socially responsible investing (SRI) is a strategy that aligns your portfolio with your passions and involves seeking out investment opportunities with companies that follow environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards. For example:

• Does the company work to minimize its environmental impact?

• Does the company treat its employees and stakeholders fairly?

• Does it support social programs in its community?

• Does the company employ ethi-

cal governance and legal practices? Does it conduct impartial internal audits? Is its decision-making transparent and accountable?

How can I research ESG investments? First, determine your priorities, then do some research. You can find information about ESG investments on websites such as GreenInvestor and Morningstar. For a list of socially responsible mutual funds, visit the US SIF website.

Following the news can help you identify which companies are making a positive impact. A CFP® professional can guide you in avoid-

ing unethical companies, finding meaningful investment opportunities and ensuring that your strategy continues to move you toward your financial goals.

What does ESG investing look like? Beyond traditional stocks and bonds, SRI choices can include mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), alternative investments, such as peer-to-peer lending and farmland investments, community development financial investments that provide services in lowincome areas, and micro-financing that supports startups worldwide, including in developing countries.

This new development, highlighted in a Forbes report, marks a significant departure from standard procedures and is generating considerable apprehension among employers.

For many companies sponsoring foreign talent, this is the first instance of biometrics being requested in these specific employmentbased immigration categories.

The lack of clear explanation from USCIS regarding this change is fueling serious concerns about potential shifts in enforcement strategies or unannounced policy adjustments.

Take Your Dream Vacation This Summer With These Budgeting Tips

Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Europe or your annual trip to a beach house, intentionally budgeting for summer vacation can ensure you don’t throw your finances off course.

According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, here’s how to plan your vacation without breaking the bank:

Be Realistic About Expenses: It’s important to budget for the true cost of the vacation that you have in mind. Beyond big-ticket items, such as airfare, hotel and car rental, be sure to factor in additional expenses you might incur, such as entry to attractions, currency exchange fees, shopping, entertainment and dining out. You should also create a cushion for emergency expenses. If time off from work will mean temporarily earning less income, be sure to account for the income drop as well.

Set Up a Travel Fund: Now that you have a figure in mind, it’s time to save for your goal. Create a spe-

cific savings account earmarked for your vacation and automate your contributions.

If you need help prioritizing your vacation without letting it derail your other financial goals, work with your financial advisor. You may think of them as someone who only helps you with tasks such as

investing for retirement or buying a home, but a CFP® professional is trained to look holistically at your entire financial picture. They can help you plan for the fun things in life!

Stretch Your Dollar: A dream vacation and thoughtful spending can go hand in hand. Here are a few strategies for stretching your vacation dollars:

• Consider timing: While summer travel often centers around kids’ schedules and work responsibilities, if you have flexibility, consider visiting your destination during its “shoulder season.” This is the period between peak season and off-season when you can expect reduced prices and thinner crowds. Timing also matters when it comes to air travel. For example, traveling on a Friday is typically more expensive than a mid-week flight. Play around with dates to find the best rates.

• Eat in: Restaurant bills can really add up. If your vacation home has a kitchen, consider preparing some of your meals. Or visit a local grocery store and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy midday during your explorations.

• Do a home exchange: Rather than run up a large hotel bill, stay in your dream destination free by doing a home exchange. Online home exchange platforms can help ensure there are no surprises at your destination or at home when you return.

To find your CFP® professional who will help you seamlessly work your dream vacation into your budget, visit LetsMakeAPlan.org. For a truly restful, rejuvenating experience, make sure your travel doesn’t cause you money-related stress. Smoked To Perfection: A Flavorful Journey Through Kentucky’s Barbecue Heritage

Barbecue. The quintessential American cuisine varies greatly across the country and in many cases, across a specific state or region. In Kentucky, barbecue is much more than delicious food, it’s history, culture and community.

Kentucky barbecue comprises about every kind of meat you can think of, as well as a few that might surprise you. From the classics such as pulled pork, brisket and ribs, to mutton, and a whole slew of delectable sides, Kentucky is full of surprises.

Barbecue is such an important part of the culture in the western part of the commonwealth, that a group of pitmasters and restauranteurs banded together to form the West Kentucky BBQ Belt.

This group showcases more than 40 restaurants, spread over 18 cities and towns, each of them bringing their own unique spin to the art

of smoked meat.

One type of barbecue that is uniquely Kentuckian is mutton. During the 19th century, sheep farmers outside of Owensboro would harvest older sheep after

they had stopped producing quality wool.

Meat from older sheep tends to be on the tougher side, so to make it more palatable, farmers began to smoke it.

As a result, barbecue mutton is a staple at legendary spots like Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn and Old Hickory Bar-B-Q. It is often served with sides like burgoo, a hearty Kentucky stew.

Whether you’re a barbecue purist or an adventurous eater, Kentucky’s barbecue mutton is a musttry culinary experience.

Traveling across the Bluegrass State gives you ample opportunities to eat different kinds of “cue,” and provides a variety of places to consume it -- including entire festivals devoted to the cuisine.

For the last 45 years during the second weekend in May, the BBQ and Barrels Festival, formerly the International Bar-B-Q Festival, has taken over the Owensboro riverfront as teams from around the country compete to win titles such as best chicken, mutton and burgoo, as well as the Governor’s Cup

for the “Best Overall BAR-B-Q Cooking Team.”

During this celebration, more than 10 tons of mutton, 1,500 gallons of burgoo and 5,000 chickens will be served to over 80,000 people.

If you travel to western Kentucky in June, check out the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival in Henderson.

Celebrating the legacy of the “Father of the Blues,” this free festival features world-class blues performances and mouthwatering barbecue, creating an unforgettable experience along the scenic Ohio River.

Microplastics And Your Water Supply: What Your Family Needs To Know

Statistics show if that if you’re not filtering your water the right way, your family is likely consuming microplastics.

An overwhelming 94% of U.S. tap water is contaminated with fragments of plastic pollution called microplastics, and bottled water does not fare much better —microplastics are found in 93% of 11 popular water bottle brands around the world.

Microplastics found in drinking water are not just an environmental hazard — mounting evidence indicates that they are also a potential human health hazard.

So what can you do to help make your drinking water safer? Investing in the right water filter is a great start. Be sure to choose one that meets internationally-recognized testing standards and is backed by independent testing.

For example, all of LifeStraw’s water filters feature a membrane technology capable of filtering out microplastics and a host of other contaminants, such as bacteria and parasites.

To ensure your family has higher-quality water wherever you go, tackle the problem with this two-pronged approach:

Slam Dunk Strategies For Reducing Your Debt

Is mounting debt causing you stress? If so, you’re not alone. Average consumer debt is on the rise in the United States.

To help you create a winning financial game plan, Experian is offering tried-and-true money management strategies, along with tips for taking advantage of new tools to reduce your spending.

Get a complete picture. Do a 360-degree assessment of how much you owe, tallying up any loans, credit cards or installment debts you might have. As part of this assessment, you can check your Experian credit report for free at www.Experian.com.

Review your budget. Doing so will help you hone in on how much money you can allocate to paying off debt and help you avoid impulse spending or indulging in extras that might set you back financially.

Choose a repayment strategy. Find a repayment strategy that works best for you and stick to it. This could mean prioritizing debt with the highest interest rate, the debt with the smallest balance, or the debt with the highest credit utilization. However you go about it, the important thing is to keep tabs on your progress and stay the course until your debt is paid off.

Keep it up. Continue to practice good financial habits, like regularly checking your credit report and credit score, spending within your means, and paying your bills on time to avoid taking on additional debt.

Use tech tools. Easy tools can help you cut out unnecessary spending. For example, the Experian app has a subscription cancellation feature that does the work of tracking and cancelling subscriptions for you. Experian

data shows that consumers have about four subscriptions on average, totaling almost $1,000 per year in potentially unused expenses.

With over 200 subscriptions eligible for cancellation through the app in categories like streaming services, meal kits and entertainment, that could spell big savings.

Access the tool as part of a paid Experian membership. To get started with Experian’s subscription cancellation feature and other tools, download the iOS or Android app or visit www.experian.com.

“It’s easy for subscriptions to add up and become costly expenses. While tracking them down can be overwhelming, you don’t have to do it alone,” said Rod Griffin, senior director of Consumer Education and Advocacy for Experian.

In addition to the app, as well as other financial resources and tools available to help consumers reach their financial goals, Experian is active in initiatives to help with consumers’ financial health. The company is relieving $5 million of consumer debt among more than 5,000 families in Louisiana.

Additionally, Experian is teaming up with Flau’jae Johnson, a junior guard for the Louisiana State University women’s basketball team, to champion the program and financial empowerment.

With 69% of college basketball fans holding debt and 49% saying they are stressed financially, according to an Experian survey, sports fans and all consumers can use extra support to manage their finances.

How You Can Support The Nation’s 1.6 Million Military Kids

Life in the Armed Forces has its challenges, especially for the youngest members of the U.S. military community – the 1.6 million kids whose parents are service members.

Often faced with constant change and uncertainty, from their family’s moves every two to three years, to their service member parent deploying suddenly for months or even years, these realities of military life can take a toll. To honor these sacrifices, the military community celebrates the Month of the Military Child in April and Purple Up Day on April 15 each year.

5 Facts Pet Parents Need To Know About Protecting Pets From Heartworms

Heartworms are one of the most common and serious health threats faced by pets. According to the American Heartworm Society, more than a million U.S. pets are infected with heartworms, and incidence numbers are rising—even though heartworms are easily prevented. To equip pet parents to provide the protection their fourlegged family members need this summer and year-round, the American Heartworm Society is sharing five vital facts about this deadly threat.

1. A single infected mosquito can spread heartworms to multiple pets. Heartworms aren’t spread from one pet to another. Instead, they are transmitted when a mosquito feeds on an infected animal, such as a dog, coyote, fox or wolf, then later feeds on other susceptible animals and pets. Within months, heartworms grow from tiny larvae into foot-long adult worms that live in pets’ hearts, lungs and blood vessels.

2. Heartworms are found throughout the United States. Warm, humid locales such as the Gulf States and Southeastern U.S. are widely known as hotbeds of heartworm

infection, thanks to the presence of mosquitoes that thrive in these conditions. However, heartworms have become increasingly common in regions such as the Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest and New England.

One factor supporting broader transmission is the practice of transporting homeless dogs for adoption from areas of the country where heartworms are extremely common to locales that formerly had few cases. Studies also suggest that mosquitoes prefer feeding on pets with heartworms over pets that don’t harbor them. Finally, mosquitoes are opportunistic pests

that require only small amounts of standing water— including puddles or half-full watering cans— to breed.

3. Heartworms aren’t just going to the dogs. While dogs are highly susceptible to heartworm infection, cats and ferrets get heartworms, too. One thing all three species have in common is that they can become very ill, and even die, if infected with heartworms. That’s why the American Heartworm Society recommends heartworm screening and year-round prevention for all pets.

4. There’s no “season” for heartworms. While the risk of heartworm spread is greatest for pets from spring through fall, experts advise that pets be maintained on heartworm prevention year-round. Estimating when the first and last mosquito of the so-called season will appear is a dangerous guess-

make friends with fellow military kids, or bond with their families, including arts and crafts, family game nights, cooking classes and scavenger hunts.

No matter what activity they are engaged with, USO programs are designed to give these children a little fun so that they can forget, even if for just a moment, the stress of life as a military child.

• USO’s Reading Program connects military children and their deployed family members. Through the program, service members can walk into a participating USO location where they are deployed, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and have that recording emailed to their child – and a copy of the book shipped home. Children can, in turn, record themselves reading a book on camera, add that book to their personal collection and send the recording to their deployed family member.

ing game, given the volatility of weather conditions in even the coldest parts of the country. Furthermore, buildings, parking lots and other structures in city and suburban communities can create sheltered “heat islands” with significantly warmer conditions than surrounding open areas. Mosquitoes also survive and thrive by relocating indoors or taking refuge in garages and crawl spaces when temperatures drop.

5. Prevention beats treatment every time. While heartworms in dogs can be treated, treatment can be expensive and requires multiple veterinary visits and months of activity restriction. Cats and ferrets, meanwhile, have no medications to cure their heartworms, because the treatment used in dogs is not safe for them. Fortunately, heartworms can be prevented with veterinaryprescribed medications that are safe, effective and affordable.

For more information on heartworm prevention and management, visit heartwormsociety.org. Heartworms pose huge health risks for pets. Fortunately, protecting them from infection is simple. (StatePoint)

• On Purple Up Day, celebrated April 15, the USO invites everyone to wear purple to show their support for military children, and to honor their strength, resilience and sacrifices.

The USO is hosting 100 Purple Up Day events on military bases around the world. Throughout the month of April and beyond, you can provide additional support to military kids by volunteering with your local USO or by supporting USO programming. Visit uso.org to learn more.

“Military kids are special—they did not sign up for the adventure they are on but are some of the most resilient people that I know,” said Christopher Plamp, USO chief operating officer and retired U.S. Air Force colonel.

“I watched firsthand as my daughters dealt with the constant change and struggled to keep friends as we moved time and again. The Month of the Military Child is our opportunity to recognize all of them and make them feel special.” (StatePoint)

Patients Share 5 Tips For Self-Empowerment After A Bladder Cancer Diagnosis

Bladder cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, yet many patients face delays in diagnosis or struggle to find the right care.

Are you navigating a bladder cancer diagnosis or unsure of what your symptoms could indicate? Patients are sharing what they wish they knew earlier—and five tips for taking control of your care, including seeking out the advanced diagnostics procedure called Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC).

1. Advocate for Yourself.

Early diagnosis saves lives, and routine check-ups and proactive testing can lead to earlier diagnoses and better outcomes. It’s important to stay organized by keeping track of medical records, test results and appointments. It’s also important to trust your gut. According to one patient, you may need to be persistent and proactive in order to get

the right diagnosis.

“I knew something wasn’t right, but it took multiple visits before I got a proper diagnosis,” says Karen S. “If there’s one thing I’d tell others, it’s to act early and push for answers.”

Like many patients, Karen first received White Light Cystoscopy, a simple procedure for diagnosing bladder cancer, and the traditional diagnostic approach in most urology offices. While WLC remains a valuable tool, incorporating BLC enhances the process and, as a result, can lead to improved detection of cancerous lesions that can drive improved outcomes for bladder cancer patients. This was the case for Karen, who gained greater peace of mind and more confidence in her diagnosis and care through this advanced procedure.

2. Educate Yourself and Others.

If you’re experiencing symptoms that could be bladder cancer, learn more about bladder cancer, treatment and diagnostic tools such as BLC.

“Bladder cancer wasn’t even on my radar until I was diagnosed. Now I talk about it to help others,” says Mary Beth M., who spent time researching her options as a patient. “I had no idea there were different types of cystoscopies—until I researched it myself.”

To learn more, you can lean on trusted resources, such as https:// rebrand.ly/Tips-BLCprocedurewebsite.

3. Build a Support System.

The cancer journey can be challenging and stressful. Surround yourself with family, friends and support groups who can help you advocate for the best care.

4. Communicate With Your Health Care Team.

When communicating with your health care team, patients say that being proactive is essential. “I learned to ask my doctors direct questions. It made all the difference,” says Mary Beth.

Some questions you can start with include:

• What technology do you use to diagnose and monitor bladder cancer?

• How often do you perform blue light cystoscopy?

• What are my options to ensure the most thorough diagnosis and treatment?

• Am I candidate for BLC?

5. Find a Urologist Who Offers BLC.

Don’t be shy about seeking out the best care possible. If you are interested in exploring BLC, speak with your urologist. If your current provider doesn’t offer BLC, consider exploring other options. For information about locations that offer BLC, visit https://rebrand.ly/TipsBLC-Locations.

When it comes to your health, be informed, be persistent, and never stop advocating for the care you deserve.

What Parents Need To Know About Protecting Their Children From Measles

Ongoing measles outbreaks across the country have many families, pediatricians and public health experts concerned. Most of the people who have gotten sick, including a child who died in Texas, were not vaccinated against measles.

The best way to protect your family is by choosing to have your child immunized against measles.

The MMR vaccine—which protects against measles, mumps and rubella—is the only way to prevent measles. Vitamin A, cod liver oil and other alternatives have been discussed as ways to lessen the severity of measles.

However, none of these alternatives will prevent measles. Too much vitamin A can also cause severe illness. Always talk with your pediatrician first.

“The reason many parents in the United States have not had to worry about measles in decades is because of widespread immunization with this safe and effective vaccine,” said AAP president and pediatrician, Susan Kressly.

“However, when immunization rates drop in a community, the disease can spread, putting everyone—especially young children—at risk.”

Before the measles vaccine was available in

the United States, an average of 450 people died from measles every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of them were previously healthy children. Children who contract measles are at higher risk for developing more serious conditions such as pneumonia or a brain infection called encephalitis.

These complications can become deadly. Additionally, a rare but universally fatal form of brain swelling called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis can occur in healthy children years after they have recovered

from measles infection.

Measles is highly contagious. The virus can live for up to two hours in the air where infected people have coughed or sneezed. Nine out of 10 people exposed to the virus who don’t have immunity from the vaccine will also become infected, according to the CDC.

To prevent the virus from spreading and potentially causing an outbreak, creating community immunity by reaching a high level of vaccination rate is crucial to protect those who cannot be vaccinated.

The vast majority of parents get their children vaccinated. But because measles is so infectious, if a community’s rate of vaccination dips below 95% of the population, the disease can easily spread, impacting individuals and groups of people. Check with your pediatrician today if you’re unsure about your child’s protection. Learn more at HealthyChildren.org.

“No parent should have to experience the loss of a child to a preventable disease. Vaccines save lives,” said Dr. Kressly. “Pediatricians are here to talk with families about their children’s health, including how they can access vaccines.

We must support immunization programs so that children in every community get the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong.” (StatePoint)

Planning For A Positive Economic Future

Financial literacy is a critical skill that helps set the foundation for a stable and prosperous future.

By understanding the basics of money management, teens can make informed decisions and avoid common financial pitfalls.

According to the annual Teens and Personal Finance survey, a study of teens ages 13-18 conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement and MissionSquare Retirement’s Foundation, 45% of high schoolers took a personal finance or financial literacy class at school.

This is up from 31% in 2024, indicating the nation’s youth are interested in building a strong financial foundation.

What’s more, of the students who took their school’s curriculum, 64% found it extremely or very helpful, yet despite this increase,

data reveals knowledge gaps remain.

In fact, 42% of teens surveyed are terrified they won’t have enough money to cover their future needs and goals.

“There is so much for teens to absorb when learning about finances and planning for their future, they often struggle to envision what lies ahead,” said Andre Robinson, president and CEO of MissionSquare Retirement.

“Offering engaging programs that can boost financial knowledge and decision-making skills can only help to inspire young individuals to build a strong foundation of lifelong financial resilience.”

Consider discussing these economic topics with your teen to help make a positive impact on students’ financial readiness and get them ready for financial decisions they’ll face in adulthood. (Continued On Page 21)

The Campaign Finance System Americans Could Have Had

Next Monday, Canadians will vote to elect a federal government. No matter the result, we know one thing for sure: Campaign spending in the Canadian election has looked radically different from a general election in the United States.

Canadian campaigns do not feature multimillion-dollar contributions, barrages of unlimited expenditures, or anything like the intense pressure American candidates face to appeal to wealthy donors.

To observers of American politics, this may be hard to imagine. But in fact, Canada offers us a vision of what could have been.

1974 marked a banner year for reformers in both countries. American legislators, reacting to the Watergate scandal, strengthened the Federal Election and Campaign Act by creating stricter limits on campaign contributions and expenditures, and instituting a public

financing system for presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Canada’s parliament responded to rising campaign costs and the onset of television advertising by passing the Election Expenses Act, which contained similar reforms, including caps on campaign expenditures and public financing for campaigns.

In the following decades, Canada’s parliament and courts continued to fine-tune its campaign finance

laws. But the United States took a different path — not because Congress changed campaign finance regulations, but because the Supreme Court dismantled them.

In 1976, the Court ruled in Buckley v. Valeo that most campaign spending limits were unconstitutional. Since then, courts have chipped away at campaign finance regulations.

The most famous of these more recent decisions, Citizens United,

Indian Diamond Exports Plunge To 20 Year Low

India-West News Desk

NEW DELHI – India’s exports of cut and polished diamonds have plunged to their lowest level in nearly two decades in the 2024–25 fiscal year, dragged down by weak demand from key markets and the impact of fresh U.S. tariffs introduced under former President Donald Trump.

Exports of polished diamonds — which typically account for nearly half of India’s gem and jewelry shipments — fell 16.8% year-onyear to $13.3 billion, according to data from the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council.

The decline reflects ongoing economic uncertainty in the trade wars and tariffs initiated by the Trump administration. The U.S. is India’s largest diamond market.

As demand softened, Indian diamond processors also scaled back rough diamond imports, which

dropped 24.3% to $10.8 billion, the trade body said.

Though overall exports slumped for the year, March saw a brief rebound, with gem and jewelry exports rising 1% year-on-year to $2.56 billion.

This was largely driven by a surge in last-minute shipments to the U.S., as buyers and sellers raced to beat new tariffs.

“U.S. buyers were loading up in March before the tariffs kicked

reaffirmed and expanded on the same anti-regulatory principles in Buckley, kicking off our present era of unlimited spending by super PACs. Congress has mostly been a bystander to these developments, leaving our public financing system for presidential races to atrophy.

Today, political campaigns in the United States saturate the nation with ads, fueled by millions or — at the presidential level — billions of dollars.

Candidates can gain a big advantage by courting major donors, especially in the early stages of a campaign. Some can use another strategy: Be rich and willing to spend a lot of your own money.

In Canadian federal elections, strict contribution limits restrain the role of wealthy donors, and candidates can only spend up to $5,000 Canadian dollars (about $3,600 U.S. dollars) of their personal wealth on their campaigns.

tem where one of the defining features of U.S. politics — massive private spending — is absent. Reformers and policymakers there operate on almost unrecognizably different terrain: Some bemoan how rich donors can contribute up to a few thousand dollars to campaigns, while recent disagreements about campaign finance have centered not on whether to subsidize campaigns with public funds or cap independent spending, but rather how aggressively to do so.

Canadians appear to be happy with their system overall. As recently as 2023, a comfortable majority of Canadians were satisfied with the way democracy worked in their country.

That same year, just 28 percent of Americans said the same about the United States, and the role of large donors and other wealthy interests often ranks among Americans’ top complaints.

in,” GJEPC Vice Chairman Shaunak Parikh told Reuters. “Indian exporters were also rushing to ship out U.S. orders first, so they wouldn’t get hit with those extra costs.”

The Trump-era tariffs on luxury goods, including diamonds and jewellery, have added further strain to an already challenging global market.

A major Mumbai-based exporter told Reuters that a recovery is unlikely this year, with the new trade restrictions and market volatility continuing to shake buyer confidence. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Wealthy individuals and corporations do not have a legal way to funnel unlimited amounts of money to candidates and parties. Caps on spending also limit the volume of advertising.

With these limits on big private spending, public financing accounts for a substantial portion of money in Canadian elections.

The state subsidizes expenditures by parties and candidates while boosting the power of small donors via a tax credit that resembles the small-donor matching systems of jurisdictions like New York.

None of these policy differences follow directly from the texts of the U.S. or Canadian Constitutions. Nor can they easily be attributed to inherent political or cultural traits.

After all, when given the chance, democratically accountable legislatures in both countries opted to set similar limits on the role of money in politics.

Canada’s campaign finance rules interlock to create a political sys-

Meanwhile, public polling consistently indicates that a majority of Americans support a vision of campaign finance regulation, including contribution and spending limits, that resembles Canada’s system more than our present reality.

In doing so, they acknowledge a principle that the Canadian Supreme Court stood by 21 years ago. Ruling to uphold limits on independent expenditures, the court’s majority opinion reads, “In the absence of spending limits, it is possible for the affluent or a number of persons pooling their resources and acting in concert to dominate the political discourse, depriving their opponents of a reasonable opportunity to speak and be heard, and undermining the voter’s ability to be adequately informed of all views.

“Equality in the political discourse is thus necessary for meaningful participation in the electoral process and ultimately enhances the right to vote.”

Summer Health And Safety Tips Doctors Want You To Know

School is out, the days are long and the temperature is rising. For a safer, healthier summer, follow these American Medical Association recommendations:

1.Wear sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Also, no sunscreen is waterproof. If you’re splashing in a pool or sweating in the summer sun, you’ll need to reapply every couple of hours or immediately after swimming.

2. Get up to date. With measles cases increasing, make sure your family members are up-to-date on their vaccines before travel and camp season. Double check everyone’s vaccine status. If you have questions, speak with your physician.

An Opportunity To Improve Health Nationwide

Walking into a grocery store can feel overwhelming – especially for those trying to buy healthier food.

There are so many choices, eyecatching marketing and health claims, and confusing ingredients, making it hard to know what’s healthy and what isn’t.

Grocery store aisles can actually be a place to fight preventable dietrelated disease and illness – as long as nutrition information is readily available and easy to understand.

Other countries successfully use simple and clear nutrition labels on the front of food packaging to draw attention to foods that are high in sugar, saturated fat or salt – three nutrients most people eat too much of. These labels are helping consumers make healthier choices.

After years of consumer engagement and research, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed easy-to-read labels on the front of most packaged foods here in the United States.

The proposed label would appear on foods intended for people aged 4 years and older and focus on three nutrients to limit: saturated fat, sodium (salt) and added sugars. Each would be rated as high, medium or

low, and include the percentage of the recommended daily amount.

The label would be placed on the front of the package in bold, easy-to-see text so shoppers could quickly understand what is in their food and compare products. Even though similar labels have worked well in other countries, some food companies oppose implementing them here in the United States.

While these labels certainly could impact the sales of less healthy foods, advocates say that these companies should recognize that their customers want to make healthier choices and purchase healthier products. Clearer labels will help them do just that.

“Eating healthy should be less complicated and consumers should be able to walk down grocery store aisles and be able to easily compare how nutritious different foods are,” says Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association. “This will give everyone more control over their food choices and health.”

Right now, the FDA is asking people to share their thoughts on this new proposed label. Between now and May 16, 2025, you can visit yourethecure.org/label for more information from the American Heart Association and to provide feedback to the FDA. (StatePoint)

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including cool, moist, pale skin, and heavy sweating, headache, nausea and dizziness.

Be advised that extreme heat can be especially dangerous for certain people, including those taking certain medications, those with chronic diseases, older adults and children.

Additional precautions may be necessary to keep these groups safe in hot weather. CDC’s Heat Risk Dashboard informs on how best to protect yourself when temperatures can impact your health.

3. Be water safe. Make sure everyone in your family achieves water competency skills. Teach children to ask permission before going near water, have inexperienced swimmers or boaters of all ages wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and always swim in lifeguarded areas at the beach.

4. Watch your diet. Reduce intake of processed foods, paying particular attention to added sodium and sugar. Add fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds to your diet. This doesn’t mean you have to give up summer barbecuing. Simply replace red meat and processed meats with lean meats, like poultry, and plant-based proteins. Also, reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and drink more water instead.

5. Be physically active. Take advantage of warmer weather to get outdoors and get active. For optimal physical and mental health, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. While exercise is important, avoid working out outside in the early afternoon (noon to 3 p.m.) when it’s hottest. Drink water before, during and after physical activity, and wear light-colored, lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing.

6. Use caution. If you’ll be consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans—up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

7. Know your blood pressure numbers. Extreme temperatures can impact blood pressure, so it’s especially important right now to visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

8. Check first. Before heading outdoors, check your community’s outdoor air quality using the Air Quality Index. Smoke from wildfires and degraded air quality that gets worse with warmer temperatures can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Children, pregnant people and those with certain chronic conditions must be especially careful.

“Behind every summertime joy— warmth, barbecues, watersports— is a not-so-secret health or safety hazard like sunburn, heat exhaustion, drowning, unhealthy foods and drinks” says Bruce A. Scott, M.D, president of the American Medical Association. “Simple steps can ensure your family safely enjoys the summer season.” (StatePoint)

Tips To Prevent Summer Slide

Students of all ages are at risk for “summer slide.” The good news is that this seasonal phenomenon, where academic skills are lost or forgotten during the long summer break, is not inevitable.

Here are a few strategies that parents can use to help their students confidently return to the classroom in fall:

Visit the library once a week: Regular library visits promote literacy and reading comprehension. They also demonstrate to students that reading can be enjoyable while giving them an opportunity to choose books that align with their interests. Investigate whether your local library is hosting a summer reading challenge or any other events that will encourage a reading habit.

Subscribe to a daily newspaper: Speaking of reading, you can help your student develop critical thinking skills while giving them a leg up in their history and social studies classes by subscribing to a daily newspaper or weekly news maga-

SIO Basic and MicroPython and approved for the SAT, PSAT, ACT and AP tests, the fx-9750GIII will be their go-to calculator for years to come, making this summer a great time to get acquainted with its interface.

Make conversation happen: Is your student taking a foreign language? Arrange for them to meet with a language partner so they can keep the conversation going throughout summer.

Also, check out the wide variety of foreign language movies, music and other media available through streaming platforms, so your student can stay immersed in their language of choice, even when class is out of session.

Upgrade their math tools: Why wait until back-to-school shopping season to upgrade your student’s math tools? Encourage them to test

prep, code and use their math skills throughout summer with a tool like the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator. With Natural Textbook Display and an intuitive icon menu, students will find its features — zine.

ing town. I stand with the people of India at this moment, and offer condolences and prayers to the families of the victims.”

Congress -

man Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) emphasized the need for global unity: “I am heartbroken by the horrific attack on innocent tourists in Kashmir.

HinduACTion, a U.S.-based Hindu policy advocacy group, described the massacre as “A targeted massacre by Pakistan-backed Islamist terrorists.

This attack is eerily reminiscent of previous massacres like Chattisinghpora. Some of our members had visited the exact site of the attack just days ago. This is a chilling reminder that Islamist extremism remains an existential global threat.”

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), one of the oldest Indian diaspora umbrella groups, issued a strong statement through its president, “GOPIO unequivocally condemns the terrorist action in Pahalgam area in India where many innocent civilians and tourists were wantonly murdered by well-armed terrorists,” said Prakash Shah, President of GOPIO International.

Angry India Suspends Indus Water Treaty, Closes Border With Pak

will be held in abeyance with immediate effect.

NEW DELHI — In a decisive move following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, the Government of India has announced a series of stringent measures aimed at conveying a strong message to Pakistan for its continued support of cross-border terrorism.

These decisions were taken during a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a special press conference following the CCS meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri outlined five key decisions taken in response to the attack:

Indus Waters Treaty Suspended

The Government has resolved to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice and to hold their sponsors accountable.

Security operations have been launched in the region to track down those responsible for the Pahalgam attack, which stands as one of the deadliest incidents since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

Top 10 Reasons To Attend Or Volunteer At Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt 2025

Warning Bells Ring As India Drowns In Chinese Imports

(Continued From Page 01)Many of these industries still depend heavily on Chinese components to power their growth, pulling in more imports even as India pushes to boost exports.

But while the imports are climbing, exports to China are doing the opposite. India’s shipments dropped by 14.5% in March, with total annual exports falling to just $14.3 billion — even lower than what India exported to China over a decade ago in 2013–14.

Trade experts say with the U.S. recently slapping higher tariffs on a range of Chinese goods, there’s growing concern that Chinese manufacturers may be looking to offload excess products in other markets — including India.

There’s a real risk that India could become a dumping ground.

5 Things Funeral Directors Wish Everyone

Most people don’t want to think about death – let alone talk about it. When the time comes, families often find themselves overwhelmed, not only by grief but by the many decisions that need to be made quickly.

Funeral directors witness this every day. They see the stress and confusion that can come when there is no plan in place and the peace of mind that comes with thoughtful preparation.

After consulting funeral directors nationwide, the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) uncovered five things they wish families knew before a death occurs.

1. It’s Never Too Early to Start Planning

While everyone knows death and taxes are inevitable, conversations about death are often avoided.

Simply documenting your wishes and discussing your preferences with your family can alleviate the difficult decisions your loved ones will have to make in the future. Speak with a funeral director to explore the many options for planning a meaningful funeral.

2. Legal and Financial Details Can Cause Unexpected Issues

Families often don’t realize power of attorney ends at death, meaning a designated person can no longer make decisions or access bank accounts once an individual dies.

To avoid complications, consider adding a trusted loved one to your bank account and ensure life insurance beneficiaries are up to date. Too often, deceased individuals leave minor children, deceased spouses or former partners as beneficiaries, leading to legal and financial challenges.

3. Final Wishes Shouldn’t Be In Your Will

Many people believe the best place to document their final wishes is in their will. However, wills are often not read until after funeral services take place, making them an unreliable way to communicate last requests. Instead, discuss and document your wishes with fam-

ily members or a trusted funeral professional who can keep your wishes on file until there is a need.

4. There Are a Variety of Memorialization Options

End-of-life planning offers more choices than many realize. While burial remains a common prefer-

ence, cremation is an increasingly popular choice and can even include a viewing and funeral service. Additionally, eco-friendly options, such as alkaline hydrolysis, natural burial and natural organic reduction are becoming more widely available for those seeking green memorialization. In fact, according

to NFDA’s 2024 Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study, 68% of respondents expressed interest in green funeral options.

Exploring these possibilities with a funeral professional can help ensure your final arrangements reflect your values, traditions and personal wishes.

5. Funeral Directors Don’t Just Manage Funerals – They’re Trusted Guides In Honoring Life

Funeral directors play a vital role in helping families create meaningful services that reflect their loved one’s life, values and traditions. Whether planning ahead or facing a recent loss, funeral professionals provide expertise, compassionate care and personalized guidance during one of life’s most difficult moments.

3 Essential Tips For Your Spring Vehicle Purchase

Tax refunds have started rolling in, which means many people are looking to use this influx of cash to make purchases they’ve been putting off.

According to an Oxford Economics report, the amount of money received from income tax refunds this year could be among the highest in recent years, so many people may have more money in their pockets to spend this spring.

One purchase typically rises to the top this time of year: used vehicles. The Oxford report shows used vehicles are one of the most popular purchases for Americans during tax refund time as this coincides with higher resale values of used vehicles. When making this purchase, it’s important to consider several factors to make a smart financial decision.

Make Sure the Purchase Fits Within Your Budget

Data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive suggests average used car prices are around 50% less than new vehicle prices. Trusted used car companies and dealerships often feature a wide selection

of inventory, including different makes and models, so customers can select a vehicle that excites them and fits within their budget.

“While there are several considerations to keep in mind when shopping for a vehicle, consumers should never exceed their budget,” said Laura D. Adams, personal finance expert, host of the “Money Girl” podcast and a paid Enterprise Car Sales spokesperson.

“A vehicle that is near new is often an excellent sweet spot for consumers looking for quality without wanting to make the leap to purchase an expensive, new vehicle.”

Searching for a vehicle with a retailer you trust can help make it easy to stay within

your budget. For example, with Enterprise Car Sales, the price listed is the price you’ll pay.

Keep the Monthly Payment Low

The more you can invest in the down payment on a vehicle, the lower your monthly cost will typically be and the less interest you will typically pay over the length of the loan. This can lead to lower, more manageable monthly payments.

“In setting a budget for a quality used vehicle, it’s important to consider the initial down payment, the monthly payments, and the interest,” Adams said. “When consumers can put a little more toward the initial down payment, while staying within budget, they often thank themselves later when they have lower monthly payments and less interest accrued.”

There are many online resources that can help consumers make this calculation. For example, an auto loan calculator can show you how a down payment can affect interest charges.

Purchase a Reliable Vehicle

No matter who you buy from, ensuring you

are purchasing a high-quality, reliable vehicle is of the utmost importance. Do your research before signing on the dotted line and conduct a test drive if you can.

“When conducting your search, it’s important to put companies and dealerships you trust at the top of your list,” Adams said. “Maintenance costs can sometimes creep up down the road, so it’s important to make this significant purchase from a company or dealership you trust.”

Some dealers also provide additional benefits to help protect a purchase. For example, all vehicles purchased through Enterprise Car Sales are “Enterprise Certified,” pass a rigorous inspection by ASE-certified technicians and come with a 12-month or 12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty (whichever occurs first), 12 months of roadside assistance and a 7-day or 1,000-mile (whichever occurs first) buyback policy.

With a little research and careful planning, you can find a reliable used vehicle that excites you. Visit enterprisecarsales.com for more information. (Family Features)

US Pressures India To Grant Amazon, Walmart Same E-Commerce Privileges As

India-West News Desk

NEW DELHI – President Donald Trump is pushing India to open its $125 billion e-commerce market to American giants like Amazon and Walmart, according to a report by the Financial Times on April 22, citing industry executives, lobbyists, and U.S. government officials.

This comes as part of a broader push for a more favorable trade agreement between the U.S. and India, which will cover a wide range of sectors, from food to automobiles.

The Trump administration is pressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to provide a “level playing field” for e-commerce in ongoing negotiations for a U.S.India trade deal, according to the Financial Times.

The report did not specify the exact demands but the pressure for greater market access remains clear.

Reliance

Amazon and Walmart currently operate in India through local subsidiaries but are restricted from holding inventory and directly selling to consumers.

This contrasts with domestic competitor Reliance, Reuters pointed out, which enjoys the ability to open physical stores and leverage its extensive retail network across the country.

The restrictions are seen as a significant barrier to the two U.S. giants’ potential for growth in the Indian market.

New Delhi officials are hopeful of reaching a deal within the 90-day window following Trump’s announcement of a tariff pause for major trading partners on April 9.

Discipline Your Child The Right Way

Children need to learn discipline early in life to build a strong foundation for future success. However, many parents end up being overly strict in the name of discipline, which can lead to fear, resentment, and emotional distress in children. The key lies in setting boundaries with empathy and consistency—teaching responsibility without instilling fear. Here are some effective ways to discipline your child without being too strict:

Encourage Positive Behaviour

Discipline isn’t about harsh rules; it’s about nurturing respect and maturity. Approach your child as a guide and supporter, not as an authoritarian figure. This encourages open communication and builds trust.

Use Praises and Rewards

Appreciate your child when they follow rules or make good choices. Positive reinforcement, like simple praise or small rewards, can motivate them to stay on the right path and feel valued for their efforts.

Set Clear Rules

Children need structure. Establish a clear set of rules and explain their importance. Consistency is key—ensure your child understands the “why” behind each boundary so they learn accountability.

Choose Logical Consequences

Instead of harsh punishments, opt for logical consequences. For example, if your child delays homework, limit playtime until it’s done. This helps them connect actions with outcomes in a healthy, constructive way.

Lead by Example

Children mirror their parents. If you want them to follow rules and respect boundaries, model that behavior in your daily life. Your example will speak louder than any lecture or punishment.

A loving, consistent approach can shape a child into a confident and responsible individual. (ANI) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

A Step-By-Step Guide To Changing Your Own Oil

Changing your vehicle’s oil is a crucial maintenance task that can extend its life and improve performance. It’s also a task many DIYers can handle on their own with just a few tools.

This step-by-step guide can help walk you through the process.

1.Gather Essential Tools and Materials

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and materials, including:

• oil filter wrench

• drain pan

• funnel

• oil (refer to your vehicle’s manual for the recommended type and amount)

• oil filter

• wrench to remove the drain plug

• rags and gloves

• jack or jack stands

2. Prep Your Vehicle

Park your vehicle on a flat, stable surface and engage the parking brake. For better access, use a jack and secure it with jack stands.

Ensure the engine is cool to avoid burns from hot oil. Open the hood and locate the oil cap to help the oil drain more smoothly. Place a drain pan under the oil drain plug to catch the old oil.

3. Drain the Old Oil

Using a wrench, carefully loosen and remove the oil drain plug. Allow the old oil to drain completely.

Once the oil has stopped flowing, clean the plug and the area around it. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it securely but avoid overtightening.

4. Replace the Oil Filter

Locate the oil filter underneath your vehicle and use an oil filter wrench to remove it. Be prepared for some oil to spill out. Place the filter in the drain pan for disposal.

ing sure it’s snug but not overly tight.

5. Add New Oil

Place a funnel into the oil hole and pour the recommended amount of oil into the engine. After adding the oil, replace the cap and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes then turn it off and wait a couple of minutes.

6. Final Checks

Check the oil level using the dipstick and add more oil if necessary. Also inspect the area under the vehicle for any leaks. Dispose of the old oil and filter properly.

Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of new oil to the gasket to create a better seal and make it easier to remove during the next oil change. Screw the new filter into place by hand, mak-

How To Use Flower Energy For Meditation

All life on this planet has its own unique energy. We tend to view tree’s, plants and flowers like objects, not any different than our furniture indoors. But they are constantly vibrating with energy.

I find that when I’m in my ‘busy’ mind rushing to and from work, appointments and the million other things on my to-do list, that I get stuck in my head and stop ‘feeling’ the energy that surrounds me. And I work in a garden centre!

Think about it though; if you own more than one pet, you might be able to sense that each one has a different ‘vibe’ and I’m not just talking personality. Our furry babies only know how to live in the moment.

They do not live in the yesterday or plan for the tomorrow. Connecting with them always has a way of making us aware of the present.

Flower energy is powerful. They can literally lift your vibration. I used to work for a wholesale nursery that grew thousands and thousands of annual plants.

The small retail store I managed on the property advertised greenhouse tours on Saturdays throughout spring. If only a handful of people showed up for the tour, I’d run around and recruit customers to join us so that I could at least get a bit of a crowd.

Often the wife of a couple was all in while her husband would be completely reluctant. I’m not one to take no for an answer, ‘I promise you won’t believe your eyes!’.

Within minutes of entering the greenhouses, approximately 9 acres under glass, those that had unwillingly drudged along were now brimming from ear to ear. As far as the eye could see, we were surrounded in gorgeous blooms.

After giving my usual spiel and taking them through greenhouse after greenhouse, I watch for the body signals that they are ready to

receive the last part of my walking presentation.

The clenched jaws are softened. The crossed arms are now thumbs in pockets.

The shoulders have dropped and the walking pace goes from ‘let’s just get this over with’ to ‘not in no big hurry to get anywhere’.

I’ll stop the group and say ‘Do you feel that?’ Instantly, they all begin to look around themselves, using their eyes to find the feeling that they are experiencing.

‘What you are feeling right now, folks, is green energy. You simply cannot be surrounded by all of these amazing blooms and not experience joy’.

This always invokes smiles and whether they are realize it or not, they just received the gift of awareness. They are in the is-ness of the moment.

My work is done here.

Flowers are the plants expression of joy. They are vibrating at a high frequency when they are in bloom. It’s why we use them to elevate celebrations of joy and why we use them during times of sorrow to relieve the suffering.

When it comes time for us to quiet our busy minds and connect with our true selves, flowers are there to assist us in this shift to awareness. Like our furry friends, their energy is always in the now.

Throughout all human history, we’ve used flowers in sacred ceremonies, thought of them as powerful omens and have used them to represent gods and goddesses.

There isn’t a single culture on earth that doesn’t use flowers to express love, joy, sorrow or worship. Our relationship to these beautiful living entities has and will always be intertwined with our existence here on the planet.

It’s a blessing to share our lives with such exquisite gifts from our Earth Mother.

Preparing for Flower Meditation

1.Have an area in the garden or outdoors where you won’t be disturbed during your practice. Creating this sacred spot need not be complicated.

Check out the post on How To Create A Meditation Garden to learn how to design a garden area that is right for you.

2.For a balancing meditation, a white flower would be a good choice for centering and refocusing your energy. If you desire to work on a particular Chakra, choose one of the many flowers associated with it. You can find suggestions in the posts written on Chakra flowers in the Chakra Gardening Category.

3.If you can do this without cutting the flower from the plant, then you may be able to return to meditate with the same flower for as long as it holds it’s petals.

However, if you need to cut the flower so that you can raise it to your eye level, place it in a vase where it can be enjoyed for the rest of the day. Use it to remind you of repeating your mantra or intention every time you look at it.

4.Once you are seated in a comfortable position, preferably on a cushion or in direct contact with the

ground; relax your shoulders, take a few cleansing breaths and begin to focus on the flower.

5.Feel yourself connecting with its energy, its life force. Mentally ask for the flowers permission to work with it and set your intention.

Let yourself be open to any messages that may come up. If it doesn’t feel like it’s an energetic match, thank the spirit of the flower and choose another one.

6.Focus a soft gaze on the flower and examine it. Really look at all of it’s features like its the first time you have ever seen it. Allow yourself to let everything around you move to the background.

7.Close your eyes and see the image of the flower in your minds eye.

Mindfully tune into the Chakra you are working on.

If a thought comes up, simply open your eyes and return your gaze to the flower. Let the thought move on, don’t give it any energy and don’t try to force it away, just bring your focus back to the flower.

8.Gently close your eyes again holding the image of the flower in your mind. Repeat this as many times as necessary until you have reached a relaxed state and your mind is quiet and calm. Commit to doing this for at least 10 minutes.

9.When you feel you are ready to end your practice, thank the spirit of the flower and send it your love.

Other ways you can increase the frequency is to include crystals associated with the Chakra you are working on. Simply holding them while you connect with the flower energy is enough.

Incense or essential oils can be used but be mindful if you are working with flowers that have their own perfume. Taking in the scent of the flower is part of experiencing its essence and true connection with its vibrational output.

What 100% Grass-Fed Organic Dairy Brings To Your Table

It’s no secret that many grocery store dairy sections are filled with more options today.

One choice continuing to gain favor with consumers is 100% grassfed organic dairy. Nutrition, environmental awareness and animal care are some of the leading reasons consumers choose grass-fed dairy products.

Globally, the 100% grass-fed dairy market is projected to continue growing and some market experts predict annual growth rates as high as 22%.

If you’re curious about 100% grass-fed organic dairy, consider these benefits from Maple Hill, America’s original 100% grass-fed organic dairy producer.

The pioneer of 100% grass-fed organic dairy took its commitment a step further by celebrating and declaring

National 100% Grass-Fed Organic Dairy Day on April 15, which recognizes the positive impact it has on consumers, cows, farmers and the environment.

1. Honoring the Farmers

Unlike large-scale corporate dairy farms, most organic farms are small, family-owned operations dedicated to traditional, sustainable farming.

Small dairy farms have been disappearing, but 100% grass-fed organic dairy creates a sustainable, viable path forward for farmers who work in harmony with nature.

This more natural approach to dairy is a “craft” process favoring small family farmers who are willing to dedicate the extra focus and patience to a better product and process.

These family farms are passed on to future generations to grow the “better for you, better for the planet” approach.

2. Commitment to Good Health

Most consumers don’t know the difference between traditional organic and 100% grass-fed organic dairy.

One key distinction is the products’

nutritional composition; 100% grass-fed organic dairy provides a 50% healthier ratio of omega 3:6 and 40% higher levels of CLA fatty acids, which may support heart health and provide other health benefits.

What’s more, Maple Hill’s products made with 100% grass-fed organic dairy are GMO free, hormone free and antibiotic free with no additives or fillers.

The line of high-quality, rich-flavored products let you experience the organic difference from traditional dairy for a nutrient-dense

Trump Tariffs Could Sink The $7 Billion Indian Shrimp Industry

NEW DELHI — The journey of India’s shrimp begins in the brackish ponds of Andhra Pradesh and ends in freezer aisles of American supermarkets like Walmart, Safeway, and Costco.

From rural hatcheries to the seafood counters of New York, Houston, and Miami, it’s a complex 40day supply chain that fuels one of the United States’ most consistent sources of affordable seafood.

India exported a record $7.3 billion worth of seafood last year, shipping 1.8 million metric tons globally. Shrimp made up the bulk of those exports, with the U.S. as its single largest market.

for 92% of India’s $2.5 billion in shrimp exports to the United States, powered by nearly 300,000 small and mid-sized farmers.

But that dominance is now at risk. With high feed costs, land rental fees, and shipping expenses already squeezing profits, the tariff is proving to be the last straw for many.

The new tariff policy under President Donald Trump’s administration is threatening to upend India’s $7-billion seafood export sector.

According to Reuters, Indian exporters are staring down a looming 26% tariff on shrimp imports to the U.S., expected to go into effect in July.

Even the interim 10% tariff cur-

rently in place has already created panic in the industry.

“Thousands of containers packed with frozen shrimp are in limbo,” said one exporter, to Reuters due to the sensitivity of ongoing trade negotiations.

“Buyers are backing out or trying to renegotiate contracts, and we’re seeing offer prices drop by up to 10%.”

“We can’t sustain these losses for long,” said another farmer in Ganapavaram, a shrimp-farming hub. “Some of us may have to shut down if this continues.”

solution that tastes as nature intended.

3. Happy, Healthy Cows

Cows on a 100% grass-fed diet can live up to three times as long as grain-fed cows and are never subjected to unnatural diets, hormones or antibiotics.

More time in pastures filled with lush grass means cows have the freedom to roam, ruminate and graze on diverse, nutrient-rich grasses.

The result is happier, healthier cows, which in turn results in a richer, better-tasting and more nutrient-dense milk.

4. Sustainability and the Environment

Producing milk without grain or corn requires farmers to focus on regenerating soil and the soil life that supports everything else on

AS LONG AS I AM THINE

Waving water in oceans vast, But not a drop to quench my thirst. Roses bloom with their beauty rare, Yet poking thorns are all I share.

People dwell, in every place, No kin or kindred fill my space. Huge mansions rise, with grandeur high,

the farm.

In fact, the healthier the soil, the healthier the feed, so farmers have a natural incentive to be as regenerative as possible.

Regenerative grazing practices are a powerful and positive tool to improve land and the web of life on farms by actively restoring soil health, promoting biodiversity and reducing the environmental impact compared to conventional dairy.

Well-managed grazing helps pull carbon from the atmosphere into the soil, fighting climate change in the process.

In addition, healthier soil retains more water, reducing runoff and protecting water sources from agricultural pollution.

5. Strengthening the 100% GrassFed Organic Market

Consumers are increasingly aware of the choices they have in dairy products and how 100% grass-fed organic supports their health, farmers, animals and the planet.

Some ways to support this category’s continued growth include choosing certified 100% grass-fed organic dairy, advocating for regenerative farming and helping shape a more sustainable food system.

Planning For A Positive Economic Future

(Continued From Page 08)

Mastering Saving and Budgeting

A good starting point for teens is to create a simple budget that tracks income and expenses.

Because only 36% of teens surveyed save a part for their futures when they receive money, this can help them understand where money is going and identify areas they may be able to save for the future.

This is particularly important considering 68% of teens agree that saving for retirement is something they can think about later in life.

Understanding Credit

Credit is a powerful tool but can also be a source of financial trouble if not managed properly.

It’s essential to understand how financial behaviors, like paying bills on time and keeping credit card

balances low, impact their credit scores.

A higher FICO score, which 80% of teens surveyed had never heard of or did not fully understand, can lead to better interest rates and more favorable loan terms.

Managing Common Debt Pitfalls

According to the survey, 43% of teens believe an interest rate of 18% on debt is manageable and can be paid off over time.

However, it’s important to understand the true cost of debt and how interest rates can accumulate over time and lead to significant financial strain.

Establishing good debt management habits early, such as avoiding high-interest debt and paying off balances quickly, can lead to a healthier financial future.

Investing and Planning Ahead

According to the survey, teenagers’ most appealing investing strategies are savings accounts, side hustles and keeping cash at home, and only 13% invest a portion of their money.

Encouraging teens to learn about different types of investments, such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds, can help them make informed decisions and begin to build long-term wealth.

Renovate Your Bathroom For Style And Function

Home renovations happen for a variety of reasons – whether to reflect personal style preferences, replace worn out materials or adapt to a family’s evolving functional needs. Among the most popular upgrades homeowners tackle, bathroom renovations can be a smart and worthwhile investment.

Updating a bathroom, even a small one, requires careful planning to ensure both aesthetic appeal and long-term functionality. To maximize the value of your investment, focus on a design that is timeless and products that offer a blend of beauty, comfort and performance.

“As a designer and renovator, I know firsthand the impact fixtures can have on a home,” said Keith Bynum, home renovation expert, designer and HGTV star. “American Standard has been my go-to for renovation projects because their products are built to last, beautiful and timeless. The brand’s approach aligns with my own – creating stylish, convenient spaces with high-quality products that cater to real-life needs and improve the way we live.”

Discover these expert tips for selecting the perfect products for your bathroom upgrade from American Standard, a trusted leader in bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures that is celebrating 150 years of designing innovative products that are truly “built for life.”

Sinks

Your sink should not only enhance the visual appeal of your bathroom but also meet your practical, everyday needs. Striking the right balance between aesthetics and practicality is essential when choosing the perfect sink for your space. If you’ve never shopped for a sink before, you may not realize how many styles there are to choose from.

An undermount sink sits with its edge below the level of the countertop, creating a seamless surface that makes it easier to clean while hiding from view. A drop-in sink is placed into an opening with the rim creating a lip that forms a barrier between your sink and counter.

A vessel sink resembles a standalone basin, often used as a decorative and contemporary alternative to traditional sinks in powder rooms. The sleek and clean design of a pedestal sink makes it a perfect solution for smaller spaces, although additional storage may be needed.

Once you decide on the sink, you’ll also need to determine what furniture to pair with it. Some popular options to complete the look

and enhance usability include a console, vanity top, floating vanity or washstand.

Toilets

When considering a toilet, performance is essential. It should meet your everyday needs, operate efficiently and provide additional features that make daily maintenance easier.

You’ll find most toilets on the market fall into one of three categories: one-piece, two-piece or smart. One-piece toilets have a seamless design, with the tank and bowl fused together for a look that is sleek and easier to clean.

Two-piece toilets consist of a separate tank and bowl, making them a popular choice for easy installation and maintenance. Smart toilets offer advanced features like bidet functions, automatic flushing, self-cleaning capabilities and customizable settings designed to enhance user comfort, hygiene and convenience.

Another important consideration is your toilet’s shape and height. Elongated bowls provide added comfort while round bowls are a space-saving solution for smaller bathrooms. When it comes to height, standard toilets are suitable for most people, but higher toilets allow for easier standing and sitting accessibility.

An option like American Standard’s line of Champion toilets, engineered to never clog and powerful enough to flush a bucket of golf balls in a single flush, provide cleaner, more efficient flushes so nothing disrupts your

ture. Sinks with three faucet holes spaced four inches apart pair well with a centerset design, providing a compact and space-efficient solution ideal for undermount bathroom sink installations.

If your sink holes are spaced 8-16 inches apart, a widespread design will coordinate well with undermount and vessel style sinks that feature a deck, offering both style and practicality. The vessel faucet is designed for above-counter or vessel sinks, delivering a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that enhances modern bathrooms.

Bathtubs

Whether used for daily hygiene or as a relaxing retreat, the bathtub is a focal point of bathroom design. From classic alcove and elegant freestanding tubs to convenient walk-in options, each type caters to different needs and aesthetics. The secret is determining how you’ll use the tub so you can maximize the features and functionality while complementing your overall design.

daily routine. These DIY-friendly, low-flow toilets use just 1.28 gallons per flush to conserve water. They also feature PowerWash rim technology, which scrubs the bowl with every flush, and unique EverClean Antimicrobial Surface protection to guard against mold, mildew and odor- and stain-causing bacteria.

Faucets

Bathroom faucets come in a variety of styles and configurations to suit any design preference. Durable finishes resist tarnishing and scratches, keeping your faucet looking new for years to come. Many models also feature ceramic disc valves for silky-smooth handle operation and water-saving technology to help conserve resources and lower water bills.

A variety of bathroom faucet configurations can meet your bathroom design needs. Designed for sinks with a single-hole or fourinch escutcheon, the monoblock faucet provides easy use with a single-handle design for controlling water volume and tempera-

You can expect to find a range of features, including ADA compliance for enhanced accessibility, deep soak capabilities for a luxurious bathing experience and slip-resistant surfaces for added safety.

The trim and faucets also play a crucial role in your tub’s overall look and performance. For families, one practical choice is the Aspirations Waterfall Tub Spout from American Standard, which is designed with rounded edges for kid-friendly safety while creating a soothing, spa-like cascade. It also conveniently doubles as a storage shelf or leg rest for shaving.

Student Visas Restored After Court Order; Indians Were Half Of Affected Cases

ATLANTA, GA – Student visas have been reinstated following an April 18 court order temporarily halting the Trump administration’s move to strip legal status from 133 international students, many of whom were Indian nationals.

The ruling by Judge Victoria M. Calvert of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from continuing deportation proceedings against these students.

According to data from the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Indian students were the one mostly affected. Of 327 visa revocation cases reviewed by AILA, nearly 50% involved Indian nationals.

Most of these students were on F-1 visas, with many participating in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program—a temporary employment authorization pathway often used by graduates in STEM fields as a stepping stone to H-1B work visas. Loss of OPT status would mean they can’t pursue

employment in the US.

In total, ICE has terminated 4,736 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System records since January 20, according to AILA. While the majority of revocations were attributed to minor legal infractions—such as traffic citations, university policy violations, or even being listed as victims in domestic violence cases—only two of the 327 reviewed cases were explicitly tied to political activism.

The lawsuit, filed by the ACLU of Georgia described the revocations as an attempt to “coerce students, including each Plaintiff, into abandoning their studies and ‘self-deporting’,” despite having committed no visa violations. Among the plaintiffs are students

on the verge of graduation or participating in legal, authorized employment. In some cases, such as one involving “Jane Doe #12,” students had no criminal or disciplinary records whatsoever.

The lawsuit challenged what it called a politically motivated crackdown on international students. “The Constitution protects everyone on American soil,” said Akiva Freidlin, senior staff attorney at the ACLU of Georgia. “The Trump administration cannot ignore due process to unjustifiably threaten students with the loss of immigration status, and arrest and deportation.”

Some students reportedly had their SEVIS records terminated without any warning, bypassing the traditional protocol where schools handle such updates. (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Pope Francis, Beloved Globally, Dies At 88; 4 Indian Cardinals Among Electors For Successor

(Continued From Page 01)

from the popemobile in St. Peter’s Square, waiving to crowds. As the Church prepares for a conclave to elect his successor—expected between May 6 and May 11—attention has turned to the 135 cardinals eligible to vote. Among them are four Indian cardinals:

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão (72): Archbishop of Goa and Daman, and President of both the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis (64): Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, based in Trivandrum. Cardinal Anthony Poola (63): Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad and India’s first Dalit cardinal, noted for his service to marginalized communities.

Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad (51): A Kerala-born Vatican diplomat and Archbishop in the Syro-Malabar Church, he organized many of Pope Francis’s foreign visits and heads the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed heartfelt condolences, calling Pope Francis “a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage.”

“His affection for the people of India will always be cherished,” Modi said in a statement, recalling his meeting with the Pope during the G7 summit in Apulia, Italy.

Modi’s sentiments were echoed by other Indian leaders, including Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian, who had visited the Vatican last December for the elevation of Cardinal Koovakad. Kurian had also revealed that Pope Francis was likely to visit India after 2025, during the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year celebrations.

A Papacy of Compassion and Change

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013, becoming the first Jesuit pope and the first non-European pope in over a millennium. He famously chose to live outside the traditional papal apartments,

citing the need for “psychological health,” and stayed in a modest Vatican guesthouse instead.

Francis’s papacy was marked by a consistent push for transparency, financial reform, and inclusion.

He elevated women to senior Church roles, advocated for interfaith dialogue, and became a global symbol of empathy—particularly for the poor, migrants, and the marginalized.

Yet, his tenure was not without controversy. He faced internal dissent and struggled with the Catholic Church’s long-running sexual abuse scandals. Critics from both ends of the ideological spectrum often challenged his leadership.

Still, his global popularity endured. During international visits, he drew millions, often walking among crowds and championing peace.

In his final Easter message, read aloud by an aide, he called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, reflecting his lifelong commitment to peace and justice.

In the end, Francis appointed nearly 80% of the cardinals who will elect his successor, ensuring his progressive vision may continue to shape the future of the Church.

As the bells toll across Vatican City and faithful around the world pray in remembrance, the Church begins its sacred process of transition—guided, no doubt, by the legacy of a pope who changed the face of Catholicism for generations to come. Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam Reunion Signals Return To Storytelling

CHENNAI (ANI)– Cinema legend

Kamal Haasan and acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam have reunited after nearly four decades for their upcoming film Thug Life.

At a press meet on April 18, Haasan shared his excitement about working with Ratnam again after their iconic 1987 film Nayakan.

“Nothing has changed between Mani sir and me,” Haasan said. “Back then, we’d sit on parked motorcycles on Eldams Road and talk about cinema.

We’ve always been in search of the right script—it just took this long to find it. We should have collaborated earlier. I’m sorry.”

Haasan also acknowledged the role of the audience in bringing them back together. “The mistake of not

The film explores the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and has resonated with audiences, performing well at the box office.

Tyagi shared his journey from Meerut to Mumbai and how his father’s love for cinema—particularly films like Damini by Rajkumar Santoshi—inspired his storytelling approach.

The idea for Kesari Chapter 2 came from the book Case That Shook the Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat, descendants of C. Sankaran

Nair, the central figure in the film.

“The book revealed rarely discussed layers of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy—it wasn’t just a massacre, but a planned political act,” said Tyagi.

He collaborated with co-writer Amrit of Leo Media Collective, and their screenplay caught the attention of producer Karan Johar.

Filming required meticulous research and historical accuracy, especially in recreating British-era courtrooms.

“We started writing in 2020 and began filming in 2022. It took nearly three years of deep research,” Tyagi said.

He also praised Akshay Kumar’s dedication to the role.

“He gave countless hours to script readings and studied Gandhi and Anarchy to understand Sankaran Nair’s ideology,” Tyagi added.

working together all these years is ours.

But we’re back because of you— the audience who wanted this to happen. In the film business, profit is often the only focus. But the real verdict lies with the viewers.”

Thug Life, co-written by Haasan and Ratnam, features Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan TR (STR), and Sanya Malhotra in key roles.

(Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

MUMBAI (ANI)- The beginning of 2025 has been challenging for Bollywood, with big-budget films underperforming at the box office.

Even superstar Salman Khan’s Eid release Sikandar failed to meet expectations.

Amid growing concerns, filmmaker Vipul Shah has weighed in on the industry’s ongoing struggles, attributing the downturn to a disconnect between filmmakers and

the broader Indian audience.

“I feel there are many reasons for this, and we are going through a phase which has lasted for quite some time,” Shah said.

He emphasized that one of the core issues is the industry’s focus on catering to a narrow segment of viewers in urban multiplexes.

“We’ve stopped making movies for ‘Bharat.’

Today, films are made for a small group of people watching in 25, 50, or 100 multiplexes.

The expectation is that only those audiences need to like them,” he explained.

Using the example of a film like Jaat, Shah highlighted how stories that resonate with smaller towns are often dismissed as “uncool,” leading to a shrinking reach.

“This obsession with making socalled ‘cool’ films has left much of our audience disappointed,” he added.

However, amid the gloom, Akshay Kumar’s Kesari 2 has emerged as a rare success.

The courtroom historical drama has opened to strong reviews and earned ₹7.84 crore net on its first day, according to the makers.
