Happy fall equinox, my beautiful Attentionistas, and welcome to the Autumn edition of Attention SL Magazine! In this issue, we delve into the wonders of the season. It is the time of year when the air turns crisp, leaves transform into a spectacular array of colors, and eventually fall to the ground, creating a whimsical, crunchy carpet to play on. In Second Life™, regions are embracing the season with creative designs, vibrant fall colors, festivals, and fun activities.
We are thrilled to feature the lovely Salt Peppermint on the cover, along with an in-depth interview about her store, Salt & Pepper, and the innovative PBR lighting that is taking the grid by storm. Her insight and personality are truly inspiring, bringing a breath of fresh air to the fashion industry.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the incredible team that has made this magazine what it is. We could not have done it without you. And to our loyal readers, thank you for your continued support. We hope you find this issue both fun and informative, and that it adds a bit of seasonal magic to your day.

Kere writes about the world: Discoveries and mistakes
By: Kere Delcon
DEAR JOURNAL … When I first started exploring Second Life™, my friends and I would meet up and discuss the favourite freebie haunts we found. These were vast yards of boxes, rows upon rows of t-shirts, bling watches with particle effects, hairstyles, eyes, and sneakers – all BoM or prims. We were bargain shoppers by default – well, scavengers if I’m honest – because we didn’t know any better. We’d piece together ensembles like paintedon t-shirts, ripped jeans, sneakers and gold chains big enough to make Flavour Flav have crowdsize envy. Then… one of us discovered the malls.
Like the Plastics from Mean Girls, we’d strut into strip malls lined with palm trees, fountains and benches (that didn’t have pose-balls – whaaaat?) and peruse vendors offering shoes, wigs, face paint, and the brand-new SCULPTED accessories. Sculpties were taking over. They could make shapes the traditional prim could only dream of. Shirts now came with attachable collars and cuffs
to make them look more ‘believable’.
T he first item of clothing that I paid anything for was a shirt from Armidi. At the time it was like Armani but for virtual worlds – at least that’s what we thought. It was particularly topical because Armani had just crashed and burned – one of many ‘real-world’ fashion houses to think they could replicate their real-world sales formula in a digital economy.
T he digital economy 17 years ago was still very uncharted territory. Big brands were trying to make it big in our space. But a user-created world should be just that, and that’s what happened. Now, our big brands are made ‘locally’ by people who understand the platform that they’re for, because they use it too. For us, our favourite Second Life™ designers have become our household names.
Avatar customisation has become more complex since then. More options always come with more work, both for the

designers and those of us who buy it up to attach in the right spot and look good. Nowadays even having someone do the hard work for you, like a personal shopper and stylist, has itself become a business.
“How do I look? Does it fit right?”
“Ummm, your junk’s hanging out.”
Oh hell. My friend’s straight friend could have been forgiven for thinking I was coming on to him, but in those days, all of us being relatively new meant that we were all relatively forgiving as well. I had mastered the art of sticking my shirt pieces (yep, they came in pieces before the days of fitted mesh – or any mesh for that matter) but had to remember to detach other pieces that I was still learning how to use.
“How do I look?” takes on a new layer of meaning when we tend to see ourselves from behind more often than in front. Those friends who can discretely tell you there’s a piece you need to tuck back in are a Godsend. g

FASHION WITH A PINCH OF Salt
WRITER: NONGE KOOLHAAS
The one constant in Second Life™ is change. With the addition of new features, technology, and the ever-evolving landscape of fashion and innovation, many designers find it difficult to keep up and stay relevant on the grid. With each new addition, some of these designers are overwhelmed and simply drop out, while others are quick to embrace the changes and strive. Still, more enter the scene with a solid grasp of what is new and popular and capitalize on the “newness.” It’s the second category that is the most intriguing to me. These are the ones who can learn, adapt, and grow to solidify their brands as a part of the fabric of the virtual world. One such designer who is constantly leading the charge is Salt Peppermint, with her store Salt & Pepper. Her unique styles and ideas stand out as a beacon of light in a vast sea of “sameness.” From themed collections to full outfits with innovative features, she never disappoints. We were fortunate to get the chance to sit down with Salt Peppermint to discuss the fashion and innovation that is Salt & Pepper.
NONGE KOOLHAAS:
Thank you for joining us Salt. We at Attention SL are honored to speak with you about Salt & Pepper. Fashion is such an important part of Second Life™ as a whole, and you have been constantly at the forefront of it.
SALT PEPPERMINT:
Thank you for thinking of me!
NK: You’ve been in Second Life for a while with an avatar that has received a lot of recognition, how has your look evolved? What’s the most important aspect for you?
SP: That’s not so easy to answer. I am not even sure how much my avatar evolved, I am still wearing the same head since ...uhm... 4 or 5 years? However, I change looks daily for ad shoots, clothes testing, etc., so it’s nice to come back to a “base look” that I feel comfortable in, which usually involves some freckles and red hair.
NK: Your website states that your store started as a concept brand, can you explain what that means? What was the original concept, and how closely did you stick to it as your brand evolved?
SP: Salt & Pepper started as a little fetish store, originally focusing on collars, and then I added a few more playable accessories matching the theme. Soon I started to add clothes, but I always loved to have complete outfits which means I would often make matching accessories or shoes or both. And so, the store kind of developed into a concept store, offering themed and cohesive collections to give an immersive experience which is the definition of a concept store.
T he fetish part still plays
a huge role in my store but other themes developed that became strong sellers and are very close to my heart like the whole “dance department” and all the interactive Aqua-sense items for example.
NK: From its meager beginnings, you have transformed the store into a household name. Some would say it has become an institution in Second Life. For those who may not know, how did you come up with the name “Salt & Pepper”?
SP: I feel very honored and flattered hearing that and
I can’t thank my loyal customers enough for being so supportive and inspirational over such a long time.
As for the brand name - I should have slept a few more days over that but in hindsight, we all know better, don’t we? lol.
I was going through various names in my head, something that would sound good to me and felt like something that could work for a fetish brand but also could be used if I should branch out. Later I often thought about re-
branding, but I feel once a brand is established, the risk, not to mention the insane amount of work and additional marketing it takes to rebrand held me back.
anything specific you can point to as an inspiration? If so, what would it be?
SP: I am trying to “go with the flow”. My inspiration mostly comes from my own real life, starting from hobbies, vacations, places I visit, art or architecture, or just browsing magazines as well as of course the internet. It is usually a specific theme that catches my eye that I want to translate to the virtual world. It can be a little piece of embroidery that will spark an idea, turning it into a whole collection.
NK: With the everchanging landscape, new technology, and exciting features being released, how do you keep up with it all?
My INSPIRATION
mostly comes from my own
REAL LIFE ...
NK: With so many unique styles and ideas in the store, is there
SP: It’s impossible and so the simple answer is, I don’t. I pick the things that are important to me and to my brand and focus on those. This includes changes like switching to the new PBR (well new to Second Life™), updating software, and always working to improve my own skills. I decided not to cater to all the various bodies offered in Second
Life™, it’s simply impossible to rig to all the sizes when you do all the mesh, rigging, and texturing work by yourself. So, I pick those that work best for me and make sure to keep a healthy worklife balance which is crucial imho.
PBR, PBR, PBR!
– did I mention PBR? –
NK: That being said, what is your favorite feature update that’s been added, and why?
SP: PBR, PBR, PBR! - did I mention PBR? Lol.
Seriously, it was about time. It opens doors to so much better quality items and better visuals, and all of that for less render cost.
It will take a little time until people adjust of course, and many creators will need more time to learn and understand but there are already so many nice things happening, and I am here for it.
NK: LOL, so on the subject of PBR, you have been at the forefront of this new feature, with new designs and quick tutorials I’ve seen you put out on Facebook, can you give us a brief explanation of what it is?
SP: PBR stands for physical-based rendering. It basically mimics real-life light behavior in our virtual world. Everything in real life reflects light, no matter if it’s shiny or matt and dull. A
white cotton shirt reflects light, just like a rough rock, or shiny metal. They all reflect light uniquely. If something did not reflect light, we would quite literally see a black hole.
Now it’s up to the creator to finetune the different qualities of the materials they want to use in Second Life™. Also, a proper inworld setup is required, starting with using proper PBR sky settings, as ALL the earlier wind lights are not suitable for PBR at all. I wish Linden Labs™ would have removed them before releasing the first PBR viewer, but that’s a different story.
T he default midday of the new PBR viewer is a good starting point, or the 3 neutral ones, I put up on MP for free.
For indoors, we need to set up reflection probes and light inner rooms as we would in real life. If you walk into a room with no windows in real life, it’s dark. So, you need some kind of light source to see anything. It’s the same now in Second Life™ too. Put up lamps, projectors, candles, etc., whatever you see fit.
NK: How much does it affect the quality of the items being created?
SP: It has a huge effect without a doubt, both In good and bad ways. PBR needs a different workflow than what was needed previously to make items look good in Second Life™, and that is a learning curve for most of us. Naturally, some may feel uncomfortable with a substantial change like that, both residents and creators. Those who dive into it and are willing to learn have been given a whole new world of possibilities. Because we do not have to bake in any
lights or shadows, we can often use tiled textures, allowing for much more crisp looks. With the possibility of using higher quality 2048 maps, we can put much more info into one map without having to split up meshes, etc.
NK: From a creator’s standpoint, what are the biggest challenges of working with PBR?
SP: The biggest challenge we as creators face is that we are missing proper documentation from Linden Labs™ side. There are bits of info here and there, but you must dig deep to find what you are looking for. At the same time, so much misinformation is being spread on social media, in-world, and everywhere that it becomes a challenge for many creators to distinguish between correct or false information. This often ends up in frustration of all kinds.
NK: You mentioned there are also negatives. What are the downsides?
SP: People with super old computers will struggle. Software moves on and eventually, there is no way around it, you will have to update your hardware. Unfortunately, some people simply do not have the funds to do so. However, you do not need a high-end PC to run PBR. The first Firestorm PBR viewer was very heavy, but as of yesterday we already have an updated version that is SO much better and easier on the PC. There is also the Alchemy viewer which works nicely even on older computers.
T here are still bugs that Linden Labs™ will need to sort out, but it will take a little time.
NK: For shoppers, what is the biggest
change they will notice in your creations using PBR?
SP: First, because I changed to only PBR, if they do not have a PBRcompatible viewer they will only see a white texture with the words: “Please update your viewer to see this item correctly.” Because of this, they will see none of the textures that I have made. A PBR viewer is mandatory for all new S&P releases.
On top of that, I hope that people will get an even more realistic and immersive feeling while wearing S&P items.
NK: Aside from BPR, are there any other features you would like to see added to Second Life™? Is there anything you feel would make the experience better from a user standpoint, or a creative one?
SP: I would love to be able to remove sent group notices. The number of times I sent wrong links or wrong info due to typos, not to mention attached items that don’t belong there is way too high lol.
I also would love to have a bigger character limit within group notices.
T hese are “little” things, but those would make my life easier lol.
T his is not so much of a feature, but proper documentation and education about PBR from Linden Labs™ side is absolutely necessary.
MORE
OF EVERYTHING. More IMMERSIVE,
better TEXTURES, better VISUALS, more INTERACTIVE THINGS.
NK: You always release such amazing and creative designs, what can customers expect from Salt & Pepper going forward?
SP: More of everything. More immersive, better textures, better visuals, more interactive things. So many ideas and so little time lol
NK: How has being a designer in Second Life™ changed your life?
SP: It gave me freedom.
I have been a fashion designer in RL, but I never had a brand of my own. Second Life™ gave me the ability to express my personal creativity without any boundaries. That has truly made me feel free. I would not change this luxury for anything else.
I’m also more flexible with my working hours (which are not less than before), but it allows me to balance my life.
NK: As a creator, I know you probably don’t have a lot of time to shop for yourself, but when you do, what are some of your favorite places?
SP: I think the things I shop for most are hair and backdrops simply because I keep using assorted styles for my ads.
PHOTOGRAPHER: SALT PEPPERMINT
My absolute favorite backdrop creators are Foxcity and Minimal. For hair, I love Mina, Truth, Doux, Wings, Dura, and Stealthic.
NK: Is there anything else you would like people to know about you or Salt & Pepper that we may have yet to cover?
SP: Izzabella Mercury is my backbone. Without her, I would be lost. We met way before S&P was founded and have been close friends ever since. She became my store manager, and no one knows the store (and me) as well as she does. Also, Cayenne Republic has been in our little team for years, helping to mod the chat and customers whenever help is needed. Both of them are rare gems.
T he S&P VIP group has the most helpful, nicest, most inspirational, and funniest people in it. I absolutely love and adore them.
I am also honored to have the coolest and best bloggers on the grid on my team!
NK: On behalf of Attention SL, and Second Life™ as a whole, thank you so much for your amazing contribution to the fashion industry and also for taking time out of your busy schedule to share your passion with us. We are truly honored to be able to feature Salt & Pepper in Attention SL Magazine.
SP: Thank you for reaching out to me!

Second Life™ 2024

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, fashion enthusiasts in Second Life™ are gearing up for a season of style and innovation. Fall 2024 brings a plethora of exciting trends that blend comfort, creativity, and self-expression.
In the ever-evolving world of Second Life™, staying on top of fashion trends can be a thrilling yet daunting task. With countless designers and creators constantly pushing the boundaries of virtual fashion, the options are endless. This abundance of choices can make it challenging to find high-quality, trendy items that truly stand out. However, the reward is a unique and personalized style that reflects your individuality.
This fall, comfort and self-expression take center stage. Oversized coats and chunky boots are huge, offering both warmth and style. These pieces are perfect for layering, allowing you to create cozy yet fashionable outfits. Whether you’re exploring a virtual city or attending a virtual event, these trends ensure you stay comfortable and chic.
Rich natural tones like fern green, winter sky blue, and scarlet red are making a splash this season. These warm colors add a touch of luxury and sophistication to any outfit. Incorporate these tones into your wardrobe through statement pieces like dresses, blazers, and accessories. These colors not only stand out but also complement the autumnal landscape of Second Life™.
What is just as important as the colors is the fabrics. Soft leather and suede are dominating the fashion runways in the form of dresses, skirts, and long coats. Denim is also trending for more than just jeans. This classic comfortable look is getting a modern update with current styles of skirts, shirts, and jackets.
Accessories are essential for completing any fall look. This season, hats and bags are the must-have items. Fedoras, beanies, and berets add a stylish touch to your ensemble, while chunky totes and sleek backpacks provide both functionality and flair. Feel free to mix and match different accessories to create a look that’s uniquely yours.
One of the most exciting trends this fall is the resurgence of corsets. Once considered a relic of the past, corsets are now making a bold comeback in virtual fashion. Designers are reimagining this classic piece with modern twists, incorporating intricate details and provocative designs.
Corsets are no longer just for historical reenactments or costume parties. In Second Life, they have become a symbol of empowerment and self-expression. Whether worn over a blouse or as a
standalone piece, corsets add a touch of drama and elegance to any outfit. They can be styled in various ways, from gothic and steampunk to romantic and avant-garde.
Fall 2024 in Second Life™ is about embracing comfort, self-expression, and bold fashion choices. There are plenty of trends to explore and incorporate into your virtual wardrobe. As you navigate the virtual fashion landscape, remember that the most important trend is to stay true to yourself. Use these trends as inspiration to create looks that reflect your personality and style. Whether you’re attending a virtual event, exploring new virtual worlds, or simply enjoying the beauty of autumn in Second Life, these fashion trends will ensure you do so in style.

art also imitates life, where real and amazing places take shape within Second Life through its inspiration.
T his year I had the pleasure of visiting two regions created by Jade Koltai: Hotel del Salto and Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake.
Each experience is unique and inspires us to discover more of her projects.
We understand that
T hanks to Jade Koltai, an expert in this art, we have access to cultural and geographical elements of places that we might otherwise never be able to visit no matter how much we have wanted to. We finally can get a sense of what it is like to be immersed in such spaces. These places, full of life, nature, and history are perfectly created by Jade and
keep us captivated and fascinated as we explore them.
Her latest project, “Loch Derry an Clair,” was inspired by Derryclare Lough, Ireland, and has been open for visits since September 3, 2024.
Whether you are a rain lover like me, or just enjoy visiting unique and beautiful places, I invite you to grab your umbrella and take a trip to “Loch Derry an Clair,” You will not regret it.

–Real Recipes from a Real Chef–

With this being the official start of autumn it only seems appropriate to celebrate the season with a couple of dishes to make your mouth water. Let’s start with a nice salad made with Honeycrisp Apples, a staple of the United States, then follow it up with a Minestrone Soup from Italy and finish off with an Invisible Apple Cake from France. Enjoy cooking these dishes with, and more importantly, enjoy savoring the amazing flavor pallet.
Autumn Harvest Honeycrisp Apple and Feta Salad
This colorful Autumn Harvest Honeycrisp Apple and Feta Salad combines all the best produce that fall has to offer into the season’s best salad. Spicy baby arugula, Honeycrisp apples, juicy pomegranate seeds, candied nuts, and crispy prosciutto. All tossed with an apple cider vinaigrette. It’s a fall staple around here… healthy, simple, and so delicious.
SERVE it and ENJOY!
Hearty Fall Minestrone Soup with Italian Sausage and Butternut Squash
This hearty Fall Minestrone Soup takes inspiration from seasonal, fresh autumn produce. It’s loaded with fiber, protein, and nutrients and makes the perfect cozy fall comfort food.
INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 pound ground mild Italian sausage
1 yellow onion, diced
2 celery ribs, diced
2 carrots, peeled and diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 2-pound butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2” cubes
1 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon tomato paste
6 cups of chicken broth
1 1/4 cups of dry Ditalini pasta
2 cans of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
3 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves finely chopped
1 bunch Swiss chard, thinly sliced into ribbons
Sea salt and pepper
Parmesan cheese, for serving
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a deep soup pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. In another pot, boil the ditalini pasta in salted water until just below al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
2. To the Dutch oven, add the ground sausage, crumble, and season with sea salt and pepper. Cook until browned and using a slotted spoon, transfer the sausage to a bowl and set aside.
3. Add an additional tablespoon of olive oil to the pot and cook the onion, celery, and carrots until softened, but not browned. Stir in the garlic and tomato paste and season with sea salt, pepper, thyme, oregano, and fresh rosemary.
4. Stir in the chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, bay leaves, beans, and butternut squash. Return the sausage to the pot and bring the soup to a simmer.
5. Cover the soup and simmer until the butternut squash is fully cooked about 15-20 minutes.
6. Uncover and stir in the Swiss chard, cooking until wilted and tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the pasta. Taste and adjust for additional seasoning.
7. Serve the soup topped with shaved Parmesan cheese and additional fresh rosemary. Enjoy!
Invisible Apple Cake (Gâteau Invisible)
The Invisible Apple Cake originates from France with a high popularity in Japan! The Japanese also incorporate miso paste into the batter for the extra flavor profile – sounds delicious to me.
INVISIBLE APPLE CAKE
Servings: 8
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 55 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
EQUIPMENT AND INGREDIENTS
Handheld mandoline or knife
Loaf pan
INGREDIENTS
3 eggs, lightly beaten
2/3 cup milk, slightly warmed
3 tbsp butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup of flour
INSTRUCTIONS
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
4 apples, (about 2 lbs.)
1. Preheat your oven to 350. Line a 9×5” loaf pan with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, quickly whisk together the eggs, milk, butter + vanilla. Then also quickly add in the flour, powdered sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt and mix until smooth. The batter is supposed to be on the thin side.
3. Peel, core and slice your apples REALLY THIN with a mandoline (I used Fuji apples, but Honeycrisp or Pink Lady are great here too). Add them into the bowl and mix to coat them all in the batter. Transfer the apples only to the pan, a little at a time, gently flattening out any pieces that are sticking up. Pour the remaining batter onto the top of the loaf pan evenly. Transfer to the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes. Or until the top is golden brown.
4. Allow to set in pan for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool for another 15 minutes. Optional: sprinkle with a little powdered sugar and slice to enjoy.
NOTES
• The batter is supposed to be more on the watery thin side.
• You can use pears as long as they’re thin sliced and sweet.
• Gluten-free flour can be used instead of all-purpose flour.
