Editor’s Letter

Why the heck is Tory King writing this Editor’s Letter? And what happened to Athena? And where has Attention

SL been all these months?

For those who’ve been out of the loop, I’m here to give you some context and history.

With barely a dime and a prayer, Athena Mariposa published her first issue of Attention (as it was called then – the “SL” came later) in May of 2016. The magazine’s chief focus in its scrappy beginnings was – wait for it – sex. Yes, like most of us in SL, Ms. Mariposa possessed a healthy, happy libido (don’t even ask about my early SL daysyikes).

As Athena’s knowledge deepened, through her drive and experience, the magazine began its slow, steady growth, a blossoming flower.

By the time I came on board as guest photographer (April 2019), Attention was an SL institution with a loyal readership; a lifestyle staple covering fashion (women’s and men’s), décor, art, travel, and more.

But, “RL comes first”

No one, not even Athena, is immune to that fact. She didn’t realize it at the time, but the November 2022

issue was her swan song as publisher of Attention SL Her RL obligations would no longer allow her to give the magazine the focus and love it required.

So, she faced a quandary. Should she “throw out the baby with the bathwater”, or – crazy idea – search for an “adoptive parent” to nurture and care for her treasured creation?

I’d been Attention SL’s Lead Photographer in recent years and, as such, had worked very closely with

“The Boss”, brainstorming story ideas, vetting potential contributors, and so on. Still, when she offered the magazine to me several months ago, I was stunned, flattered, terrified, excited –you name it.

Ultimately, the loyalty I felt for both Athena and the magazine won out.

So, here we are.

My hope is to carry on with Athena’s vision albeit filtered through the lens of my own individual tastes and obsessions, all with the goal

Attention SL covers through the years, 2016 (first issue!), 2018, 2020, and 2022 - Athena’s final issue.

of establishing Attention SL as Second Life’s foremost lifestyle publication – the go-to, indepth source for everyone wishing to lead their best lives here.

While slowly navigating the steep learning curve required for this mission, I’ve felt immense gratitude for the advice and support of many generous souls.

In this relaunch issue, you’ll find work from most of them, including some of Attention SL’s long-time, loyal staff members – Aria Christen, Boudicca Amat, Brunella Voelisa, Dirk Vanlager, Elaine Lectar, Lori Bailey, and Mya Audebarn.

We’re also welcoming back some all-stars from the past – Jason Canucci, Morgaine Warblood, Mrs. Sassypants, and P e d r o.

New contributors include Bellisima Benelli (marketing manager), Charlyrayne, Divos Titanium, Eli Hunter (social media director), Kere Delcon (assistant editor), and Verandi Diavolo.

Special thanks to our guest contributors Lika Cameo, Luke Niklas Pierce, Matty King, and Sparklebottom Lasertits (cover girl from Athena’s final issue!).

And yes, Athena remains as curator of her personal passion, Attention SL’s “World Famous Flickr Section”.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge a Second Life dynamo who, though not a staff member, has shared her insights and wisdom, lovingly and magnanimously - Ms. Kess Crystal (Seraphim and Glamour Sauce). She’s buoyed my spirits more than words can say. Happy Summer, everyone! g

THE CO-OWNERS OF FÊTE: THE RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE, - A SERIES OF BRANDED RESTAURANTS IN SECOND LIFESHARE HOW THEY CREATE AN AUTHENTIC DINING RESTAURANT INWORLD AND SERVE THEIR GUESTS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE WITH EVERY DISH INTERVIEW BY BRUNELLA VOELISA

SECOND LIFE BEGINNINGS

Exeter Nova-Parnes: I was playing The Sims online, and an ad for SL sparked my interest. In those early days, I was shopping, clubbing, and roleplaying in Gor.

JeVon Nova-Parnes: After I relocated from New York City to Florida, and my friends relocated to other states as well, we were looking for ways to keep in touch. We discovered SL and all of us joined. It was our way of meeting up and clubbing from wherever our adult lives took us.

Attentionistas / Experiences

SECOND LIFE LOVES

EN-P: JeVon and our children!

JN-P: My Second Life is pretty good. I have Exeter, our amazing children and our entire family and friends. We’re surrounded by some amazing people.

FÊTE EVOLUTION

JN-P: fête is pronounced ‘fate’, like ‘date’, and that’s really the start of the story. Fête was born when Exeter and I were dating and looking for places to go. Many of the restaurants were selfservice or abandoned. Those that were worth visiting were located exclusively on resort sims.

Overall, there was an absence of locations that were suitable or available to anyone that honestly and seriously wanted to take someone on a date. We figured this was a dilemma other couples were facing, and since we loved roleplay, we conceptualized our own restaurant.

My summers in the Hamptons (particularly South Hampton where you could sail your boat to a beach club restaurant) inspired the first, and currently main, location - fête: The Restaurant Experience. Fête opened its doors privately in July 2021 and went through several tests and

adjustments before it opened to the public in September.

We partnered with pose and backdrop store, Synnergy, and operated the Switzerland Ski resort in winter of 2021.

Then, a year later, fête branched out on its own and opened fête: Venice, Italy. Each resort opened in the fall and usually stayed open for about four months.

We’ve also collaborated with other resort owners, to operate restaurants within their privately owned properties, such as the Ishatar resort, which had a Moroccan theme, and Izakaya, which was a Japanese restaurant at the Koyo Resort.

In May, we opened a new location - fête: NYC - which is in Wandering NY. Next, in June, we opened Hitchcock’s in the popular lobby of The Ritz Hotel. Exeter and I already have started the creative process for a further resort destination scheduled to open in the fall.

OWNER ROLES

As owners, we do everything necessary to ensure a great guest experience, including waiting on tables along with our staff members.

THE GUEST EXPERIENCE

From the fête experience, we want them to get the romance and the feeling that they’ve stepped away from their normal day-to-day, and focused on the people with whom they are dining.

UNEXPECTED PLEASURES

JN-P&EN-P: We love roleplay. We love that we can bring our years of roleplay experience to the restaurant in a different and unique way. We enjoy meeting people from across the grid. Designers that we love and admire eat at our tables.

We enjoy being part of people’s milestone moments in their lives. We coordinate everything from proposals to weddings, baby announcements and gender reveals. We host countless birthday parties and anniversary dinners. We have groups of girls for bachelorette parties or bridal showers.

Our guests trust us with those events. It’s an honor and we take it seriously when constructing an event, because we know it will be a memory for them. We value our guests, and

they feel valued when they visit, and many come back. We become part of their story.

For example, one couple booked a table at fête for their first date. A few months later they came back, and he proposed at the same table. That table was special to them because it was “where it all began” and, hey, we’ll be there for the next stage of their story.

JN-P: One of my favourite stories is about a couple whose experience made me lean over and say to Exeter, “See this is why we do this!”. Outside of SL, they lived in different countries. When they reserved a table for a date night, they asked to see our menu beforehand, which we found puzzling.

When they arrived that night for dinner, they explained that in RL, they had each “ordered in” the same items that they would have ordered on our menu. During their date at fête, they were eating in RL!

For us it’s the romance, but food is universal. So, it’s heart-warming when you see two people sitting here, bonding and chatting. It’s about spending time with someone you care about it, whatever the relationship is between you.

Exeter and JeVon Nova-Parnes (with son, Ethyn), hold court in the entrance bar of their recently opened project, fête: NYC.

INSPIRATION SOURCES

JN-P&EN-P: We love restaurants. We are foodies. The restaurants we’ve been to and enjoyed in RL influence what we do.

JN-P: This is a hard question. A lot of the things we do, weren’t really planned to be what they ended up being.

For example, when we got married, we wanted a destination wedding in Venice, Italy. So, we created a “Venice, Italy” region. Our wedding guests loved the region and started requesting to stay there after the ceremony. Our friends told their friends who wanted to visit too. Before we knew it, fête: Venice, Italy was born, and we were running a full resort.

EN-P: For me, fête is an amalgamation of experiences and restaurants that I have been to over the years. The various menus are more personal, I think, as we spend hours and hours poring over recipes and restaurant menus to create the menu in SL. Then we hunt through and find food around the grid to match what we are trying to represent.

JN-P: Exactly. We will rename something to reflect a dish we have had in RL. Like, in NYC the menu has items our real moms make - our favorites of their dishes.

CHEF’S KISS

EN-P: The fête Tomahawk is our real signature dish. It’s a bone-in ribeye that has the Fête logo seared into it with a hot branding iron. It’s become really the one item that is universal at all our restaurants. It’s our ‘theme’ plate.

JN-P: My mom’s dish, and of course my favorite, is the Mofongo. Monfongo is a Puerto Rican dish that I love but, also, I love my mom’s version of it.

We brought the concept to Lucas LaMeth, who is known for making food inworld. He created it perfectly. So, when we opened fête: NYC, how could I not have it on the menu?

EN-P: In fête: NYC, the Fried Chicken is how my mother cooks it - fried then coated with a honey pecan glaze. It’s the perfect mix of salty and sweet.

JN-P: Exeter and I have met in RL, in New York. To illustrate how much we are foodies, we went into Chinatown one afternoon and visited three different restaurants that were listed as having the best dumplings in NYC.

We did our own dumpling tour! We went in, ordered dumplings, ate them, and went to the next stop and so on! The soup dumplings were so good!

COURTESY

HIGHS AND LOWS.

JN-P&EN-P: The high point is the recognition and the referrals we get from our customers. Opening new projects and challenging ourselves with the next project. being able to collaborate with other people on the grid.

The only lows are the occasional challenges that arise from server lag and user errors.

SECOND LIFE BUSINESS

EN-P: Well, fête does a few different things. We have the dining rooms, catering, private events, concerts, and special resort destinations that we do every fall that stay open for a few months, and we are the creators of the Viva Las Divas drag review.

As for what makes a business successful, you must treat it like a business and not a hobby. You must put in the work. If you don’t treat it like a real job and put in the effort to make it succeed, then it won’t.

JN-P: To echo what Exeter just said, you must be dedicated and realize that you have to start small and then build.

At first, you’re going to have to do everything

yourself, because only you know the goal and how you want to establish your business. Hiring people immediately and trying to manage a team while building a brand is very difficult and it doesn’t allow you to focus.

SPIRIT SOURCES

JN-P: Our source is each other, really. We inspire each other to be better and do better. We’re both driven and dedicated to what we do.

RL IMPACT

JN-P&EN-P: We’re just very observant about the places we go to eat.

We often take pictures of restaurant light fixtures and send them to each other if we aren’t together at the location.

EN-P: Well, it can literally be anything. Maybe we like how the mirror is hung in the bathroom, or the style of fork etc. We take a pic of it and text it to each other.

We have our own little mood boards in our minds lol. These pics get added to our collective consciousness and we incorporate the things we like into what we are building.

JN-P: Going back to when we were dating, we visited some amazing restaurants here in SL. But many of them were almost fanciful and fantasy. They were beautiful, but we knew RL restaurants didn’t look like that.

So, we wanted to mimic the RL experience. Exeter and I love decor and interior design. When we open a location, we want to have fresh design ideas and showcase the current design trends that we see and love in RL.

We hope that when we bring it into SL, others love it too.

EN-P: That is true. We want authenticity. We want you to feel like you are really there, that its immersive and real.

JN-P: We do go out to eat a lot and we both travel for work a lot, and we know what we don’t like. When we planned out the format of fête, we took the things we did like and combined them.

INSPIRING STAFF LOYALTY

Being transparent and making sure they are paid fairly, so that working for us is worth it to them. They are our team, and their role is just as important as ours to running the business. We support them in their own endeavours and their projects outside of the restaurant. Our team has slowly become our friends and we treat them how we want to be treated.

ROLEPLAY JOYS AND LIMITS

JN-P&EN-P: Our team loves to roleplay and takes its cues from our guests’ interactions. None of our servers’ responses are scripted.

EN-P: It’s always a challenge, right? Some guests want us to be very present and into the RP. Others want us to leave them alone.

JN-P: Yes, I think the challenge is reading the table and reading the guest. We have guests that arrive and greet us with paragraphs of RP, and so we follow suit.

In turn, there are guests that want to focus more on their conversation and the ambiance and would rather not RP at all. Not everyone is comfortable RPing.

EN-P: Every table is different. More positives than not. The worst example of a challenging

table was a couple that literally broke up over dinner! That was a difficult situation to RP.

JN-P: It was a rough night. We won’t mention names, of course. but they arrived and sat down. Midway through the second course they began arguing in Local, and this wasn’t cute bickering! The woman stood up and left.

We were all here and a little stunned because we weren’t sure if this was part of their roleplay or if it was really happening.

The server asked us, “What do I do now”? We said, “Well, we handle it like a real restaurant would. Go over and ask if everything is all right.”

They did go over to ask him if everything was OK and, surprisingly, the gentleman stayed and finished the rest of his meal courses. He tipped very handsomely and when he did meet someone else, fête is where they came. The two of them

have been back a few times. So, he is just fine with his new love.

Overall, having been open for two years, we’ve seen it all at this point! Wait, I take that back. We haven’t had anyone say “no” to a proposal, which always makes me nervous when someone plans a proposal here. I know one day it’s going to happen, but I’m hoping it never does happen!

WHAT COMES NEXT?

EN-P: We’re going to Disney World!! Kidding. We just opened a third location at The Ritz Hotel, which has a 1920’s theme. All locations are being MyStory enabled (MyStory is an attachable HUD that gauges your avatar’s health, happiness, and hunger amongst other physical needs). g

Experiences II

A DATE WITH FÊTE

gal reporters get into their groove

HOW IT STARTED

Brunella Voelisa: On a beautiful summer evening in late May, Sparklebottom Lasertits and I were both looking forward to our special date at fête: The Restaurant Experience at the invitation of Attention SL’s Tory King. He suggested I invite Sparkle, and having previously interviewed her (the cover star of the November 2022 edition of Attention SL), I was incredibly happy with that – she’s hot, witty and

great company! The owners told us we would be dining at the recently opened fête: NYC locale in Wandering NY.

That seemed to call for a sleek metropolitan outfit, given its urban chic vibe. But this is exactly what my extensive collection of LBDs (Little Black Dresses) is for.

I rummaged through my inventory and chose a hot black cocktail dress from Binna accompanied by diamonds from Empire and a chain link clutch bag from Arnoud.

TABLE FOR TWO

Sparklebottom Lasertits: I arrived on a busy street corner in Wandering New York via the landmark Brunella had shared.

People packed the place. I looked around and didn’t spot her until I saw someone in the crowd

frantically waving at me. As I approached, her leggy dress instantly struck me as Bru bounced in excitement. She greeted me with her eyes and at once took my hand. “Come on, they’re waiting for us!”, she chirped.

She quickly led us to fête, where the owners and staff were already standing at attention.

Bru: It was 9pm when I met Sparkle near the restaurant. She looked great in a stunning ivory dress, her short pink hair glinting in the evening sun. We walked to the restaurant together, chatting expectantly about the evening ahead.

JeVon Nova-Parnes, one of fête’s co-owners, greeted us at the door and took us to our table. The smart urban feel, business-like, yet intimate, struck me right away. It was obvious that JeVon and his partner Exeter had spent hours getting every detail right, from the chefs scurrying

busily behind us in the kitchen to the images of New York city life on the walls.

After we adjusted our lighting and music streams, our server for the evening, Mae (Grace Callen), joined us and handed us the menu. OMG! the food looked fabulous, eclectic with a Caribbean-American twist, just the kind of thing I would enjoy in RL. I was beginning to salivate over the thought of Mami Nova’s Monfongo (a Puerto Rican dish of fried green plantain mashed with crispy pork skin and garlic), when I realized I’d better order a drink.

Sparkle was already ahead of me, having ordered a Jet Setter cocktail. As I sipped my virtual Fashionista (vodka, triple sec, honey, blueberry, pomegranate, and lime juice) I bit the bullet and ordered the Monfongo, preceded by a

City Island Grilled Shrimp Cocktail, something I’ve loved since I was a child. Of course, Sparkle had ordered already (Kips Bay Crab Cakes followed by a 5 Boroughs Tomahawk Steak, rare) and called for more drinks!

This may be the moment to explain that although the dining experience is virtual or roleplay, the owners have lovingly recreated the items you order inworld to look exactly like the real thing. So, although you must imagine eating, your avi is sampling authentic looking food onscreen.

This is the real magic of fête: the sight of your avi, dressed in her hottest outfit, in a gorgeous setting, in great company, eating spectacular food, waited on by staff who want to ensure you enjoy every moment. It all adds up to such a happy, enjoyable, and relaxed experience and I’d have to say that’s what SL for me is all about!

It’s also fun, and I realised that a full explosion of endorphins was hitting me as Sparkle and I chatted. I found myself looking into her eyes and thinking how fab she looked and how much I was enjoying the company of an incredibly special person in a special place.

The dishes arrived one by one, and as we tucked into them, we undoubtedly paid less heed than we should have to Jevon and Exeter’s incredible attention to detail. But then that’s the point – our conversation engrossed us, and isn’t that what you want from a restaurant? OK, great food too!

More drinks arrived, courtesy of Sparkle (peach cocktails) and, growing a little tipsy, I needed a little extra something. What selfrespecting-wannabe IT girl does not? Call it YOLO, call it what you want, and no doubt Sparkle will have more to say, but tottering slightly, and trying not to overbalance in front of the server, I headed to the powder room.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S RP

Sparkle: Bru pointed to her nose and mentioned something about powder before heading off to the ladies’ room.

A minute later I got a text from her about how incredible the marblework was and that I must check it out. I headed back, swung open the door and at once saw what Brunella meant; the

“...a full explosion of endorphins

marblework was stunning! The tiling had a laserperfect cut, and its polish was so immaculate I could see my reflection on every surface.

It took me a moment to catch Bru leaning against the sink, heavily rolling her eyes at me as her intentions whooshed over my head. She sniffed and tugged down the top of her dress just enough to reveal a white powered line disappearing into her cleavage. “Ready to party?”, she asked, winking.

I slid toward her, trapping her as I placed my hands on the sink on either side of her. I dipped my nose into her cleavage and dragged it up as she cupped her breasts, squeezing them against my cheeks. She smelled of strawberries and vanilla and sweet chemical candy.

My eyes rolled back as I sniffed and so did hers. I noticed I’d missed a spot and gave her a bonus lick as she bit her lip. She grabbed me and spun me around, pinning me against the sink aggressively. “My turn!”, she said with a smirk as she flicked my straps off and tugged the top of my dress down, completely exposing my breasts.

She sprinkled a vial messily all over them, then dove in. She licked as much as she sniffed, her lust clearly driven by more than just the cocaine. She looked up at me with a silly, intense smile, half of her face dusty with white powder. She pressed her body very firmly to mine by this point. She licked her lips and tugged the top of

endorphins was hitting me...”

her dress down further to match mine, her skin pressed to mine. She sprinkled a dab on each nipple, whispering “Your turn again.”

Suddenly, after we’d explored a few more creative ways of snorting cocaine from each other, Bru’s purse fell over and its contents spilled out, revealing, amongst all the interesting things she keeps in there, a few baggies of brightly coloured pills. Brunella giggled and... well, she’s a pro and remembers the rest of the night a little better than me...

Bru: We reappeared holding hands and giggling giddily minutes later, to the bemusement (or amusement) of our server. I forgot to ask her later if she noticed. I did tip her though!

From then on, the evening sped by – I have no idea what we talked about. It just felt magical and timeless, which it kinda was, because before long the staff encouraged us head to the rooftop for desserts and coffee. These were self-service and as much as you wanted to eat. As JeVon put it: “Please stay if you like. Drink, desserts, sample it all. Coffee... ice cream... cakes...dig in!” So, we did!

Who knows how long we stayed - I think around three hours. The staff at fête do know when the time is right to leave their guests alone, but finally and regrettably, it was time to leave. This magical evening was over.

As it turned out, it was not – we hit a club and, as usual, the following morning I was

walking home, barefoot and sore, avoiding the stares of commuters and ready to get my long overdue beauty sleep!

HOW IT ENDED

Sparkle: The owners told us that we were so polite, friendly, and fun and that we ordered countless cocktails, had fantastic meals, and sampled many desserts up on the rooftop.

However, my memory ended in the ladies’ room. I really couldn’t remember anything to give a proper account of the rest of the night. But Bru is a professional, certified (no, really, she showed me the certificate she keeps in her purse!) party girl, so I am grateful for her... professionalism. Despite my lack of coherence, I very very much know I had an absolutely amazing time!

Bru: So, that’s it – the Date with Fête. One of my happiest days in SL! Did I enjoy it? OMG yes. Would I go on another one? ‘Course I would. Would it be at fête? Yes. I’d be insisting. Does virtual dining work? Definitely!

Even if it initially sounds counter-intuitive, I would recommend readers visit fête and try it. It’s ideal for a date, business lunch or an occasion when you want to chat, look, and feel great.

But next time when I visit, I might have to have something delish on hand to eat in RL to avoid the hunger pangs! g

You might think of Seraphim (founded in 2011) as simply a useful service, albeit one that is indisputably indispensable to masses of SL shoppers. It takes extraordinarily little sleuthing, however, to uncover the beautiful, empathetic heart beating within this business.

When I discovered that Seraphim had produced SeraPRIDE for years now, as a fundraiser for Rainbow Railroad, my cynical, wornout soul kinda melted. Goodness and humanity still thrive in this bruised, battered world.

Intrigued, I swung by the mid-June event for a visit. Every imaginable type of avatar, each in its own version of festive gear, packed the outdoor venue. The music was celebratory; a nonstop dance-a-thon. The colors, the lights, the sheer joy of it all –blissfully overwhelming.

Thank you, Seraphim, for reminding us of faith, hope, and love. g

One creator, bold and curious, among the countless who crowd the scene, is challenging old boundaries. How large – how inspiring – is his vision?

TTHERE IS ONE universal goal for most of us who live, work, and play in Second Life: we want our avatars to look good. Having been on Second Life for almost 15 years, I cannot even imagine the countless hours I have spent creating shapes and making looks to build - at least what I consider to be - a great-looking avatar. Even when I am done, I am never done; just one more small tweak or slider change will finally get me closer to avatar perfection. Beyond simply the time investment, I do not even want to think about the Lindens I have spent in pursuit of this ongoing obsession. However, I am not unique, and most of us want to make the perfect avatar that reflects our personal likes, tastes, and goals.

One key aspect of building the “perfect” avatar is skin. The journey and evolution of avatar skins in Second Life has been astounding, especially for males. Gone are the days where men had three or four options to consider. Having been a redhead in Second Life since almost the beginning, I remember the days of frustration trying to find a skin that would work for anything other than black hair. Now there seem to be almost limitless options, and one choice that has become a staple in the Second Life skin game for men is Stray Dog.

Stray Dog entered the scene in 2016, which means this iconic brand has been making men look better for almost seven years.

Gac Akina, Stray Dog sole owner/creator, is a long-time resident of Second Life. His artistry was changing our virtual world years before he created his impressive brand. Gac used to give photography lessons via portraits with his Artaze Photography Studio and Gallery.

He even dabbled in creating personalized mesh heads for those seeking an individualized appearance. Those efforts paved the way for Gac’s decision to create male skins, and he first debuted Stray Dog at the Signature Event in December of 2016.

Over the years, Gac has continued to perfect his craft, making Stray Dog one of the top brands when it comes to male skins. His store offers a multitude of diverse options, allowing residents to create avatars that are reflective of different ethnicities across the world. His inclusivity does not just stop at body and head skins, but also includes extra options, such as hair-bases,

freckles, eyebrows, blushed cheeks, skin cuts, and more. The variety Gac has offered over the years has set the bar for other skin creators across the grid. He has released hundreds of skins and taken part in countless events. Stray Dog has become a virtual household name due its quality, attention-to-detail, and variety of options.

While I could wax on about Stray Dog and how great it is, I know Attention SL readers want to hear directly from the creator. That said, Gac has graciously agreed to answer our questions so we can learn more about him and his fabulous brand.

“No more seeing your AVATAR’S TWIN at EVERY CORNER.”
“I’ve always found it A TAD FRUSTRATING to see the same patterns in skins OVER AND OVER the GLOBAL SPECTRUM OF BEAUTY.”

HOMEM PARA HOMEM

DIVOS: Gac, Attention SL is excited and grateful to have the opportunity to speak with you about Stray Dog. Men in Second Life seem to have so many more options for creating amazing appearances for their avatars, and Stray Dog can play a huge part in achieving these elevated looks. Why do you think there has been more of a focus on men’s options in recent years?

GAC: Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to meet with you, Divos, and be a part of Attention SL Magazine. Isn’t it fantastic how varied the options have become? No more seeing your avatar’s twin at every corner. It’s been a long time coming, but guys in Second Life are finally getting the spotlight. Remember back in 2016? Choices were limited, causing a cycle where men spent less, and designers hesitated to jump in. But bit by bit, a few brave brands started to cater more to men. This opened the market, and now we see an impressive surge of new designs. Stray Dog is thrilled to be part of this revolution, making Second Life even more exciting for the gents.

DIVOS: As a creator that focuses on men’s appearance, how do you go about creating a look for Gac? Where do you start and what do you consider most important?

GAC: Oh, Gac! He’s donned so many faces and embraced various ethnicities over the years. Whenever I start crafting a new look for Gac, I have a vision in mind, an idea of the character I want him to portray. And, you know, your avatar’s look is a form of self-expression. It’s impactful. It’s like asking yourself, “What story do I want to tell today?” So, I’d say the most important thing when designing Gac’s appearance is staying true to that narrative I want to express in Second Life.

DIVOS: Diversity is clearly an important part of Stray Dog. You have an almost endless array of international male options. How do you decide what type of skin or avatar options you are going to create next with so many looks out there? Do they come from photos, celebrities, or do you look for certain features?

GAC: Absolutely! Diversity is at the heart of Stray

Dog. Hailing from Brazil, a country known for its rich cultural mix, I’ve always found it a tad frustrating to see the same patterns in skins over and over. I really wanted to tap into the global spectrum of beauty and develop unique looks.

So, when it comes to deciding on the next

skin or avatar options, it’s about embracing and showcasing the wonderful array of international male aesthetics that exist in our world. It’s like a journey around the globe, right from your Second Life screen.

DIVOS: Stray Dog is 6 years old and shows no signs

of stopping. After years of doing photography and graphic design in Second Life, what made you interested in starting a store?

GAC: You’re right! Stray Dog has come a long way, and we’ve got even more ground to cover. The brand started as my blog back in 2015. Like any blogger at the time, I had a hankering for a custom mesh head. So, I started designing my own skins to suit my style. And well, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, my passion for creating unique looks turned into something bigger - a store!

STYLE CREDITS

DIVOS: Stray Dog is not your everyday store name, which makes it unique and interesting. What made you decide on that store brand name?

GAC: Ah, the name! Well, there’s a band named Stray Dogg whose songs I’m quite fond of. Their music has this relaxing and inspiring quality that I often enjoy while working. The name ‘Stray Dog’ felt right — it’s unique, a bit offbeat and it really captured the spirit I wanted to bring to my store.

DIVOS: What is the most challenging part about being a store owner in Second Life?

GAC: Being a store owner in Second Life means you’ve got a whole lot of different tasks to manage. From designing to marketing, customer service, and more, there’s a lot to juggle. Funny enough, crafting the skins, which might seem like the heftiest task, often turns out to be the most straightforward part of the journey.

DIVOS: What keeps you excited and motivated to continue working on Stay Dog and making new releases?

GAC: Passion really is the driving force behind Stray Dog. The process of creating new faces, envisioning who might wear them, and then actually seeing avatars wearing my skins around Second Life — it’s an experience that fills me with joy. It’s the love for what I do and the happiness I derive from seeing my work come alive that motivates me to continuously innovate for Stray Dog.

DIVOS: You have created so many countless, beautiful looks for men in Second Life. Is there anything new that Stray Dog customers can expect from you soon? Are there any future collaborations in the works?

GAC: Absolutely! There’s an exciting collaboration on the horizon. While I can’t spill too many details just yet, what I can share is that this project has already captivated my heart. So, Stray Dog customers, stay tuned! We’re always working behind the scenes to bring you something new and exciting.

DIVOS: As a long-time resident of this virtual world, you have had an opportunity to explore and see many other creative people at work. What stores and creators do you find inspiring?

GAC: Wow, Second Life is a treasure trove of remarkable artists — it’s a humbling experience

“MY PASSION lies in continually PUSHING THE representation...all TYPES OF

THE ENVELOPE of quality and BEAUTY that exist.”

being a part of such a vibrant creative community. There are innumerable names that spring to mind, and it would take at least a good five pages to list them all out! But suffice to say, I’m deeply inspired by and grateful for the rich tapestry of artistic talent that makes Second Life the captivating virtual world it is today.

DIVOS: As a renowned store owner, what advice would you give someone looking to start their own store in Second Life?

GAC: Believe in your unique vision. Avoid falling into the trap of comparison — it can only distract you. Concentrate instead on your own journey, celebrate every success, no matter how small it may seem. Remember, every step forward is progress. It’s your unique touch and dedication that will shape your brand into something truly special.

DIVOS: You are 15 years old in Second Life, and while many people have gotten to know the Stray Dog brand, what’s one thing you can share about yourself that people do not know?

Any reason you chose the name Gac Akina?

GAC: Ah, a little peek behind the scenes, I like that! As for the name Gac Akina, it’s a fun word jumble based on my real-life initials. It didn’t quite resonate with me at the start, but now, it’s grown on me, and I quite adore it. As for a personal tidbit... well, I have an identical twin in real life, and he’s not just a sibling but also one of my greatest friends.

DIVOS: While there have been many advances in options for male avatars in Second Life, is there anything that you feel is still missing as far as available items for men?

GAC: I’d love to see a new UV map released for a mesh body, like what LeLUTKA did with their EVO X line. It would open a world of possibilities for customization and further enhance the individuality of avatars. I can only hope that this evolution is just around the corner in our Second Life journey.

DIVOS: How has opening a virtual store affected your real life? Has anything changed for you because of Stray Dog?

GAC: In short, Stray Dog has been a life-altering journey for me. It’s reshaped my world in ways I couldn’t have imagined, influencing my creativity, and bringing an entirely new dimension to my life. For that transformation, and for the opportunities and experiences, I’m endlessly grateful.

DIVOS: With warm weather always being in season in Second Life, there is never a time that showing off Stray Dog skin is not an option. What would you say is your favorite accessory to go with your Stray Dog skin?

GAC: If I had to pick favorites, I’d say a face add-on from Addon+ and eyes from Avi-Glam stand out. It’s like they add that extra dash of ‘oomph’ to the overall look.

DIVOS: Is there anything you want people to know about Stray Dog that we have not had a chance to cover yet?

GAC: I would love for everyone to know that with Stray Dog, my passion lies in continually pushing

the envelope of quality and representation. I will persistently strive to create high quality skins that continue to embody all types of beauty that exist in our world. I want Stray Dog to be a place where every avatar can find a skin that resonates with them, that feels like a true reflection of themselves. It’s a never-ending journey of exploration and creation, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.

DIVOS: Gac, I speak on behalf of so many men on Second Life when I say thank you for the amazing beauty and wonderful creations you bring to us in this virtual world. And thank you for your time today and for allowing us to feature your brand in Attention SL Magazine!

GAC: Thanks, Divos! It was a pleasure. I wish you and Attention SL all the best!

WILDERNESS

Three years ago, a worldwide pandemic changed all of our lives, even in Second Life. As we floundered about, trying to make sense of it all, one photographer discovered his new passion.

WWHEN 2020 CAME the world seemed to stop for a moment. We each dealt with the pandemic in our own little idiosyncratic ways. For me, it was my photography. I’ve been a photographer in Second Life since 2017. Every one of those years, from then until now, has been fantastic in terms of personal growth and artistic expression. During lockdown, it was an outlet to put all my fears and anxiety into.

And then I met my wife, Maria. I could go on and on about her, but I won’t bore you with my doe-eyed expressions of love. Three years on, we’re still together, living what she and I euphemistically call “The Blake Sea Life”.

If you think “The Blake Sea Life” sounds a little contrived, you’re not alone. I certainly did up until three years ago when I became not only an addict, but a fullyfledged, signed-up-and-paid member of the lifestyle.

You sea (pun absolutely intended - I’m renowned for my dad jokes), my only interaction with the Blake Sea till that point had been rezzing my boat and sailing around the waters for an hour or so. When I met Maria, however, and learned that she too was an avid sailor, everything fell into place. My adventures upon the Blake Seas took an amazing turn.

It’s common knowledge that residential areas within the Blake Sea – Second Norway, Sailors Cove, Hollywood and so on - are coveted and deemed to be rather exclusive

because of their Land Impact to Linden Dollar ratio, where the norm is around 1:2. While that seemed pricey by comparison to other Estates on the grid, Maria and I agreed that the value we’d get for our money would far outweigh the cost. Imagine living within more than a hundred regions that are all sailable by Blake Sea residents and nonresidents alike.

So, we stopped being visitors and became residents. For our new home, we chose Sailors Cove, which is a collection of regions in the Blake Sea area. It’s really a remarkable neighborhood, and I do say ‘neighborhood’ because our friends are within a short boat ride away.

Think about how you navigate Second Life. Most of us just teleport from place to place. But you don’t have to live in the sky, or on an isolated standalone region or homestead. There are many reasons for

such arrangements of course, and I’m not discounting them. But the sense of community you get from living in a region like Blake Sea is so much more profound.

What if you could hop in your boat and sail or cruise to your friend’s house to have a chat, or drop by a coffee shop? In Blake Sea, it’s possible. Here, you can easily buy seafaring vessels - sailboats, speedboats, or yachts. Most boat creators have harbours (their stores) dotted around the regions where you can go and demo one of their many boats before buying.

Exploring the Blake Sea by water is an adventure in itself, but being able to live in an area where you can choose among multiple modes of transport is a real privilege.

Indeed, Blake Sea is more than just a place to sail your boats. I know of at least six airports within the Sea’s residential areas. Some are full blown ‘International

Airports’, like the one in Second Norway, set within FOURTEEN - yes, I said that rightFOURTEEN regions, which cater to a fully immersive international travel experience. There’s a check-in desk where you grab your boarding passes There’s even a rail system that not only runs underneath the airport but also around the whole of Second Norway – to smaller, bijou airstrips like the ones in Sailors Cove and the Rainforest regions.

Each airline has its own terminal and lounge. While the smaller ones are usually unsuitable for Boeing 737-sized planes, they normally have smaller hangars where you can easily lease and fly your smaller jets and seaplanes.

If sea legs and wings are not your thing, there are roadways for vehicular travel. You can also go by horseback up ‘Cooper Mountain’, set within the truly picturesque Rain Forest region, rich in vegetation and

waterfalls. There, you can relax and marvel at lots of stunning focal points.

Or grab your skis and snowboards and plan for a vacation to Aspen, a standalone vacation spot that spans four regions dedicated all-year-round to winter. Here, you can rent one of the beautifully decorated Lodges or Chalets and enjoy the coziness that Aspen offers. You can partake in any

of the free activities there, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and more. Then, top that off by taking the lift to the café that sits atop the mountain and enjoying some après ski refreshment before retiring to your vacation abode.

So, why do we call it “The Blake Sea Life”? Well, it really is a lifestyle and an umbrella community, encompassing many

smaller communities. For starters, there is a sailboat racing community, a motor yacht community, and an aviation community. We have regattas that come down the channel in front of our house. On occasion, there’ll be a flotilla of Second Life Coastguards in perfectly aligned formation coming out of their station in Second Norway.

The Blake Sea has its own Mer Community,

set within two gorgeously decorated sims. You wouldn’t even know they were there if you weren’t looking for them. It’s not unusual, however, while sailing around, to find one of the Merfolk playfully swimming alongside your boat, greeting you while trying their absolute best not to get caught in the tangles of the copious amounts of Anglers that converge upon the Seas of the

“Once you have lived it, you’ll never want to live anywhere

Blake.

The widespread Angling Community is in every corner of the Blake, be it someone fishing from their residential dock, or one of the many who come together at Siren’s Isle.

Siren’s Isle is the social gathering place for everyone on the Blake Sea, whether they are visitors or residents. There, you’ll find boats, yachts, jet skis - in fact, any

seafaring vessel you can imagine. Their passengers often choose to disembark and enjoy the land and its surroundings while angling for that all-important ‘whopper.’

For people who might not necessarily want to partake in the nautical side of the Blake, there are at least two other meeting places to enjoy.

Salt & Siren is an extremely charming

hangout that sits out of the way of the Blake’s main traffic. It hosts DJs and live performers alike. Even when there is no event happening, they always welcome sailors and aviators to hang out and have coffee while watching the world sail past.

Schooner’s Pub is a livelier venue that hosts DJs around the clock. It’s set upon a large Schooner-style ship in Snug Harbour,

just off the main Blake Sea Channel.

What really sells “The Blake Sea Life” for us, though, is that sense of community. That feeling of while being alone, you’re never lonely, as you watch sailors and aviators go about their business, having fun. Here, we have neighbors all around us, a good deal of which are our nearest and dearest friends. We’re all placed within a few SIMs of one

another, which gives us all our privacy but still allows us the sense of neighborhood that we love. I think it’s that passive interaction of people coming and going that makes the experience of community.

“The Blake Sea Life” really is one to behold and, as many of its residents will tell you, once you have lived it, you’ll never want to live anywhere else. g

LIMO TO BLAKE SEA

AS HOME DÉCOR AND LANDSCAPE MAVEN MRS. SASSYPANTS CREATED A SECOND LIFE DREAM HOME, SHE FINESSED HER SHORT LIST OF KEY STRATEGIES

“If I had a Linden Dollar for every time I heard someone say ‘I wish I could decorate/landscape’, then I would be a Lindennaire, I swear! ”

-MRS. SASSYPANTS

Isn’t it funny how something that is seemingly a natural expression of art has people so wound up?

Individuals who are more than capable of putting together truly amazing, beautiful, and creative avatars often struggle with basic decor and landscape design.

Well, this is where a few tips and tricks might hopefully set them on the right path to “making their house their home” within Second Life.

Whether their Land Impact allowance is 300 or 3000, they can use it wisely, effectively, and have an amazing-looking living space.

So, lets start off with the one thing you will need to begin your adventures into successful

landscaping and home decor - land.

Whether it’s a rented 512 square-meter plot or a full SIM, you should always plan for its size and land impact capacity.

If you are a Premium or Premium Plus Second Life account holder, you have a designated land allowance included in the price of your subscription. You can either use this against tier on a piece of mainland, or you can choose to use one of the many available, beautiful Linden Homes.

I’ll touch more upon those options in coming articles.

For now, back to the task in hand!

“GO SMALLER TO LOOK BIGGER”

PLAN YOUR LANDSCAPING and decor in line with your land impact (LI) allowance. Often, I’ll come across a plot that looks ‘empty’. By this, I mean that there is a house placed on a plot and not much else. This is most likely because the owner of the plot has made a landscaping error. They have chosen a house that is either too large in land impact or is too big to be able to furnish and decorate adequately using their allotted

LI allowance.

My personal rule of thumb is ‘go smaller to look bigger’. Let me explain that a bit better. Jason and I live on a 12,000 square-meter plot which allows us a 2134 LI capacity for decorating and landscaping. If I were to keep the land mass as-is (the full size of the plot) that would be a heck of a lot of ground to cover and ‘scape. Trying to make that plot not look ‘empty’ would take up a huge

chunk of my LI allowance. Further, it would likely leave me with hardly any LI to rez and adequately decorate a decent-sized home.

Now don’t get me wrong, ok? If you prefer a detailed landscape over a detailed home, then that’s a perfect situation for you. But, what if you could have both?

Well, you can!

The trick is to reduce the amount of land mass in your plot, like I did with ours. Our

parcel looks more like a 4098 square-meter plot, but it’s a highly detailed ‘smaller’ land mass.

Terraforming the plot so that you increase its water area and decrease its land area means that you have less land to fill. But you still have the same allotted LI capacity, which then affords you the luxury of the illusion of having more LI allowance to play with.

CHOOSE A BUILD that fits your needs, land mass and impact allowance. These days, most creators manage to make truly gorgeous houses and buildings for us to call “home”. One of the tricks of creating a beautifully detailed decorated home is to ensure that you choose the structure itself wisely.

“A 250 LI HOUSE WITH EIGHT ROOMS FOR JUST TWO PEOPLE?”

Taking my own plot as an example again, with its 2134 LI capacity, one could think that it’d be ideal for rezzing an 8-room, 250 prim house because, hey, you still have 1900 LI to play with, right? WRONG.

This is one of the biggest and most common mistakes that people make when landscaping and decorating. Out of that 1900 remaining LI, you still must landscape the property and decorate 8 rooms. To do this effectively and in a detailed fashion, you would most definitely need more than the remaining LI allowance. How does one go about this, then?

Well, think practically and logically for the first instance. Do you need a big house that is 250 LI with eight rooms for just two people? Probably not. In fact, our current home only has four rooms (Lounge/Dining, Breakfast Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom). So then, ask yourself - why purchase a bigger build with more rooms than you need? It makes zero sense to do so.

Look at smaller houses to fit the size of

the land mass (not plot) that you have. Also, ensure that it only has the rooms that you need, so that you’re able to decorate with a high level of detail and quality.

“ONCE YOU HAVE DECIDED UPON YOUR CHOSEN THEME, STICK TO IT.”

PICK A DESIGN theme.

In my humble opinion, this is one of the most important points that I will touch upon.

A theme is basically the glue that holds your whole look together. It should be the most important thing, after acquiring your land, that you decide upon.

Depending on where you choose to reside in Second Life, your theme will often be determined by the land that you purchase. Most estates that rent out designated plots on a region already have a set theme - be it tropical/beach/sand, temperate/green or glacial, to name but a few. Bearing all of this in mind, it’s sensible to choose your living theme accordingly. For example - you would not choose to rent on a glacial style/snowy

sim and then place a tropical/tiki style build down, would you?

Once you have decided upon your chosen theme, stick to it. This is where a lot of people ‘go wrong’.

For example, lets look at how I decorated the home featured in this article.

It’s a contemporary-style build which lends itself well to two different types of decor - contemporary and classic. The house itself sits within a temperate landscape that is decorated with pines, bushes, and rocks. But this build could look good at the beach too, or even your own tropical island with palms, rocks, and grasses. It all depends on the style of landscaping you choose to fit with the theme of the region.

Don’t, however, make the mistake of

putting down a Tiki-style hut and decorating it with shabby chic or chintz, because that really isn’t going to work together at all.

Once you have chosen your design theme, pick a colour theme and try and carry it through the house to create ‘flow’.

In the pictures shown, you’ll see I chose rather dark, jewel-coloured walls downstairs with lighter coloured soft furnishings and the metal ‘gold’. I added accents of pink to

the kitchen and dining area and picked the colour up in the lounge through wall art as well.

The theme was created throughout the build, furnished in the modern classic and contemporary style, taking inspiration from the house itself, by using light and glass to show off and highlight certain areas. I carried the ‘gold’ theme from downstairs to upstairs, where I used it to contrast neutral

tones in the bedroom, as opposed to jewelled ones.

Whilst you pick a theme and stick to it,

“FIND YOUR OWN FAVOURITE DESIGN FAMILIES”

don’t think you can’t venture into different colour themes within that, because you can. Try and match the tones with the theme and keep the different colour to that one specific room.

For example, as you see in the photos, we had dark green and black downstairs. To bring the brown/earthy tones of the bedroom down to the lounge would have totally disturbed the flow.

“HOWEVER YOU CHOOSE TO DO IT, HAVE FUN WITH IT!”

You should use the same work process to choose the style in which you decorate your home.

While I used the modern classic/

contemporary style throughout our home, this didn’t mean that I needed to stick with just one creator when choosing my furnishings. You will find, as you begin to shop around different stores, that certain designers tend to ‘marry’ themselves with others in their style.

In fact, several brands have proven this point by collaborating to produce items that work well with one another’s stores or independently with others. The more you look around, the more you will see this played out amongst creators.

I have my own favourite ‘groups’ of certain styles that work well together when I’m choosing a theme for decor.

The style that I created in these photos was, again, modern classic/contemporary. Most of those furnishings would not work so well for the rustic farmhouse, countryliving charm setting in which we currently live, which I furnished with a completely different ‘family’ of creators.

In time and with practice - perhaps using this article as a guide - you too can and will find your own favourite design ‘families’ -

and your own personal style preferences. So, there you have it – basic, key strategies to help you achieve successful landscaping and home decoration with relative ease. Using this information, anyone who is looking to take a step into creating a beautiful and detailed living space can now do so - or begin to practice how to do so.

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing in all of this, though, is to ensure that whatever you choose to do, however you choose to do it, that you have fun with it! g

THE ART

of Lika Cameo

GALLERY

LLIKA CAMEO doesn’t call herself an artist, despite the acclaim her work inspires from others. Until recent years, even while her obsession with drawing led to a brief period of studying art, she considered her passion a hobby.

Yet, happily for us, her instinct to express herself and her emotions through visual art was undeniable. In the past two years, she has had numerous exhibits in Second Life, each one a story, an opportunity to grow.

Lika’s work doesn’t intend to make things change, solve problems or answer questions. Her focus is on conveying feelings, depicting human emotions, making us see them through her eyes. She centers her work in body motion shots and portraits, using her signature lights, shadows, and monochrome tones. She constantly experiments and challenges herself with different techniques, transforming mixed media, sketches, or inworld images into edited digital paintings.

Her workpieces are part of her story. She revisits them to play, lose track of time; immerses herself completely, until it’s time to share them with us.

Lika generously created three of these pieces, Confined, Breathless, and Possessive, especially for Attention SL. Silence, The Shape of Water, and By My Side are from her existing collection.

The Kershire Suite contains a bar with a (bot) piano player and bartender, a giant dining room with room for eight, a living

room/study, a bedroom and bathroom.

The suite includes an incredible number of details - antique furniture, unusual pieces (like a stuffed polar bear), fine art on the walls, and a roaring fireplace.

From the dining room to the bedroom, the Kershire offers adult furniture, often with a D/s (Dominance and submission) theme (optional). The bed has a Cumming Soon engine, which we highly recommend.

VITALIS RESTAURANT

Our dinner for two at Vitalis Restaurant was one of the best RP dining experiences we’ve ever had Owner Lux Voxel, who often serves guests personally, clearly knows how restaurants work, from orders to the way he brought the drinks and constantly offered refills.

Vitalis also has a bar area, where you can sit and hang out with the bartender, Frederick. Usually, canned responses, but sometimes he comes to life and engages with guests.

OTHER AREAS OF THE HOTEL

There is a very ornate Spa, which management restricts to group members and Hotel guests.

Sun loungers and hot tubs surround the main pool.

“Visiting is a joy”

“Visiting here joy”

There’s even a lion glancing in through the window from outside!

Beyond the Spa is a private RP area, where we had a Couples Massage given by two members of Voxel’s growing Empire Hotel team.

We rated the experience highly.

and live performances”

You can access the Tower of Records club via an elevator. Next to the club, you’ll find ‘Freaks Games Room’, with actual games you can play.

WooWoo’s ice cream shop is at the side of the hotel. As the name suggests, you can get ice cream and cake there.

There’s also a photo studio, where you can arrange for professional portraits.

OMERTA CITY

Omerta is a town facing a river, which includes a Mississippi-style steamboat, or “gambling ferry.”

If you are a group member you can also take one of the boats on the pier out on the river.

“Perfect for a special

In addition to owning Omerta City, Lux has a custom tattoo shop called Mesh Mafia. You’ll find the store in the region.

FIVE REASONS TO VISIT THE EMPIRE HOTEL

1 – With a unique and different vibe to anywhere else in SL, the Empire Hotel is

highly immersive. Visiting here is a joy.

2 - The friendly owner and staff offer top-quality RP.

3 - Vitalis is one of SL’s best restaurant experiences.

4 - Omerta City evolves constantly. Voxel is always adding something new.

5 – The amazing suites are super luxurious. Perfect for a special occasion. g

Borkum

feel like your perfect getaway. This photogenic island is a wonderful hangout, with numerous hideaways.

Yoyo Collas, owner/creator of the region (moderate rating), named it after RL

Borkum, an island and municipality in the Leer District in Lower Saxony, NorthWestern Germany.

Its available activities include rental bike rides, kite surfing, volleyball, a playground, and amenities like the lighthouse, sun loungers, umbrellas, a beach café, ranger tower and several beautifully decorated cottages, both at the seaside and at the top of the island overlooking the ocean.

Or you can simply relax in the white sand, listening to music, the sounds of the sea, the waves and the seagulls while

enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, the view, and... the beautiful people.

Gifted photographer Effy Nova is the owner/creator of Moksha (moderate rating), a simple, lovely Indian atoll with an atmosphere conducive to relaxing, chilling, and hanging out with friends.

The beach offers various sitting areas, and there are cozy, secluded, nicely decorated beach huts along both sides of the pier as well as numerous little boats to enjoy.

If you’re in a more social mood, be sure

to check out the beach bar at the end of the pier. It has both sitting and dining sections. Several exotic bird species live here, as well as some playful little elephants.
