Welcome to our extra special 30th anniversary edition! 4
I’ve always been a winner and a fierce competitor. I have found that my sporting skills have undoubtedly helped me in my business career – plus the excellent training I had at Deloitte and Ernst & Young. Those early days were tough, but my people skills came to the fore and I successfully integrated into the Bridgwater business community. Expansion came mostly to the east, but also in the Bristol area given my friendship with Bristol MP and TV celebrity, Richard Cottrell.
My first year sales were over double my budget - and the net profit was 50% higher than anything I had enjoyed before. The journey has been a roller coaster, or as I often say like being on the wheel of fortune.
Being an entrepreneur is exciting but also scary, terrifying and lonely - it is not for the faint hearted.
I’ve travelled to the USA, the Bahamas, France, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Thailand and Singapore on business, and managed to enjoy parallel careers that a conventional accountant would not be able to do, notably:
• becoming managing consultant of First Group central Europe
• effective CEO of the Lovell Group
• CEO of Environmental Polymers, listed on OFFEX
I have been able to get involved in a wide range of activities including public speaking, writing and radio presenting. I love to help people and I’ve helped a great many.
Being married to an entrepreneur is not fun - and Lisa and the boys had to put up with me being away, usually two days a week - plus all the long hours and stress.
I’ve tried my best look after my extended family but this special occasion is dedicated to them. Several people have really helped me over the years:
• Linda Porter of Ford Civil Engineering, whose belief in me made Aspen way possible
• Terry Higgins, founder and CEO of the TJ group
• Mark Lovell - founder of the Lovell Group and World Rally champion.
I remember standing at a local petrol pump on a Sunday in June 2003 and receiving a message that Mark had broken his neck in his last rally. I was overcome with grief. Mark, your old pal Maximus has never forgotten you.
• Most recently, Nigel England, without whom our success in South Wales would not have been possible.
As I once said to Nigel, “... you and I have been to war, the shells have exploded all around us, but we survived and we are still together”.
I have worked with some great, and some not so great people and I have the best two assistants possible in Tina and Tim - thank you.
There have been a lot of downs too, and people letting me down - this is why I called my second book Winning 2-1. I’m a rejuvenated accountant and a better person. I’m going to enjoy my special occasion, and would like to thank all those people that have helped me.

TERRY HIGGINS - TJ GROUP
Very recently I was surprised to be informed that Aspen Waite is 30 years old this August.
The founder, CEO and trusted friend – Paul Waite – and I, first met in January 1995. So, some 18 months after started his company.
I had recently been informed by my then employer that our visions for the future were perhaps not in accord! And with no experience, or previous aspirations to run and own my own company, with a mortgage and two children very much still of school age, a mutual contact advised me to meet with Paul and discuss various options.
Armed with a basic business plan I arrived at a period house in Bridgwater, which I found out was doubling up as family home and office location. I was introduced to Paul, sitting behind what I initially thought was a haphazard pile of yet to be filed paperwork, and was immediately put at ease, totally reassured that not only was my business plan excellent, but that he had the energy, vision and ability to help me get started. Any trepidations I had felt regarding the thoughts of going alone were swiftly put to one side by the sheer enthusiasm and belief portrayed at that very first meeting.
Of course, my business plan was at best only ok! I suspect a rewriting of the document did indeed take place!
However – this man had an intuitive ability to reassure a new client, introduce him into the world of rules and regulations that need adhering to, whilst allowing
the principal to concentrate on doing what he knew best. In my case start a Transport business supporting the construction industry.
I was swiftly introduced to Barclays Bank, who following Paul’s revised business plan and his personal recommendation and support, adopted me as a client with what was then a Government Guaranteed loan for new business start -ups.
And this I think is the key to knowing Paul and Aspen Waite. The ability to understand what financial products are available, what regulations are needed, and to ally them to a clients’ need, whilst mentoring the recipient. Paul really does work hard to understand each and every client and their own unique needs…. both professional and personal.
I have nothing but fulsome praise for Aspen Waite. During my own journey with my company from a small start up to a company now employing over 230 people and covering an area from the South West through to Kent, Paul helped, questioned and became involved with every development that my business undertook.
I would venture to suggest that both of us have used each other on many occasions to grow and share our mutual experiences within business, and I hope Paul feels that working together –especially in those early turbulent years including the famous banking “meltdown” of 2008, and the difficulties all businesses felt following immense changes
in business life – benefited him as much as I truly believe that the support shown to my company helped me transition to the more mature business that it has become.
So that is why it came as such a surprise that Aspen Waite is to celebrate 30 years. During that time business has not had to be dreary, but something to be embraced. Obstacles have never been seen as anything other than a reason to re-evaluate. Running a company has never been a challenge – but an enjoyable way of life. The reason simply is the unswerving support given by Paul and his team.
Time really has flown!!
Congratulations to you all at Aspen Waite.

ALEC JONES-HALL - GREAT BRITISH EXPOS
Great British Expos and Cherishers
Great British Expos have been delighted to work with Aspen Waite for the past 10yrs.
As a sponsor they have been fundamental in our growth across the UK and enabled us to expand in new regions such as Cardiff and Twickenham.
When we decided to launch our regional business awards in 2018, Paul Waite a proud champion of SMEs committed to become the main sponsor of these awards. Since then, we have seen 18,200 SMEs enter the awards, 192 winners crowned and £150,000 raised for our Charity Cherishers. Due to the success of our regional awards, we launched our first Great British Business National Awards in 2022.
Through Paul’s sponsorship commitment Great British Expos and our awards have been able to launch our charity Cherishers. Cherishers offers meaningful employment to those in our community who have barriers to traditional employment. Cherishers also supports the most vulnerable in the community by providing befriending, home care and free lunch clubs. The charity has gone from strength to strength and now employs over 30 people and helps 700+ families a week.
The relationship between Great British Expos and Aspen Waite was strengthen during the COVID pandemic. Being in the events industry our income stream dried up overnight due to the governments lockdown measures. However being true friends of Business, Aspen Waite reached out to us and supported us through the pandemic by financially and emotionally.
Collectively we run a series of online sessions designed at helping business owners during those perilous times. Aspen Waite also supported us in hosting the UK’s first online virtual SME Exhibitions. During this period we both helped over 10,000 SMEs by them attending our online workshops and exhibitions.
However, our greatest achievement was working with Aspen Waite in hosting and delivering the first virtual award ceremonies at Lion’s house. A TV studio was created at Lion’s House and Paul Waite hosted the awards. The awards ceremony also some of their artists on Aspen Waite Radio performed, Dame Stephanie Shirley deliver a powerful keynote virtually and the amazing technical team at Aspen Waite made it all happen. Over 400 businesses attended the virtual awards, and it was a huge success that many people still talk about today.
Our account manager Tina Fincham has been an incredible support for The team at Great British Expos and has helped nurture our relationship over the years. Her constant support is invaluable to us and we are extremely grateful.
After working closely for some many years we genuinely consider Aspen Waite to be part of our family. We are so happy that you are celebrating your 30th year in Business and wish you every success for the future!
Your friends at Great British Expos!

In 2001 I had a problem with my auditors which was quite a big company
They came and didn't know anything about my business and I spent a lot of time with them trying to sort things out. I was starting to get fed up with them .
Through an introduction I met up with Paul.
My first impressions of Paul were that he was a very assertive man, but after a while I found out that it was all to do with confidence , and his bark was not as bad as his bite
During the long association we have had we have had many disagreements, which is all perfectly healthy to our strong relationship
Paul has done a lot for my company, including introducing me to R and D
And by earning me money with R and D he has saved my company in taxes.
The huge plus in our relationship, is that he is always personally there if I need him.
He has always given me good advice to the best of his ability , which sometimes I have taken and sometimes I haven't!
I shall always be proud to introduce Paul and his company to anyone.
I feel quite honoured to write these few words of appreciation for Paul and his company.

An Amazing Milestone
Congratulations Aspen Waite, 30 years is an amazing milestone, the Wantage team are extremely proud to be a part of the adventure.
There is never a dull moment with Aspen Waite, always lots of exciting ideas, services and products on offer. Recently we have seen what a wonderful team of people there are at Aspen Waite. Everyone has pulled together and brought their A-game to the table.
In the last three months there has been many staffing changes at Aspen Waite South, and yet we have all been welcomed by such a friendly team, both in Wantage and by Bridgwater, and that is down to the spirit of the last 30 years that has been instilled in Aspen Waite as a group.
There has also been much discussion and plans for changes for the bright and exciting future and it’s a welcome insight into the next 30 years to know that we will be expanding and focussing on the day to day crossover between offices and a National dream team.
For all of us having the pleasure of meeting Paul, and enjoying a very illuminating meeting, it showed his passion for the last 30 years, and the ongoing care that is shown for the company and clients on a day to day basis.
Every day brings new challenges, yet we know that the core of the Aspen Waite is its people and its clients and how important it is that the focus remains there.
We look forward working towards the next 30 years on this successful journey.

During my 16+ years at Aspen Waite, there have been many changes.
When I joined, we had offices in Bridgwater, Wellington, Taunton and Fareham and life was ticking along.
I was having issues in my job role at the time, and after meeting with Paul, he gave me a new opportunity. As the saying goes the rest is history.
Life at Aspen Waite is so varied. I love my job and the variety I have. One day in the office, next day could be spending the day driving to see clients with Paul singing and dancing in the car, then maybe an exhibition to attend, Judging the Awards, supporting all the businesses we advise.
The really exciting new businesses Aspen Waite are involved with are the Radio station and recording studio. Who would have thought AW would have its own live streaming service - well done all.
To be honest , life could not be more interesting. Paul has supported me with every opportunity he has given to me and I feel blessed to have been given these unique opportunities and meeting Paul when I was going through a difficult time Congratulations Aspen Waite, Paul and all the teams upon reaching 30 years.
Let’s see what the next 30 years has in store. Looking forward to the next part of the journey.
Tina
Over the years I have seen Paul develop his love for cycling, pedalling along with him, testing (rider/velocipede) with cycle rides around the South West.
I have been at the beginning of a quite a few of Paul’s exerts, always the start, almost never the end, because with Paul when one goal is reached it’s the beginning for another adventure, (his whole ethos it seems), and it’s not the end until he says so!
During our early days Paul honed his cycling skills, often drumming up ideas for adventurous rides that would bring benefits to others while he rode. Which in 2010 lead me to one of my most challenging endeavours, supporting and cycling along with this combo of half man, half bike as he embarked on the St Margaret Charity challenge. Cycling, JOGLE, (John O’ Groats to Lands’ End), 940 miles in 8 days! Though when riding with him all I could see was his rear end as he determinedly powered on. I was very proud to finish this adventure with him.
Here’s to another 30 years dear friend and to the road ahead, when and wherever it may take you.

RACHAEL WOOD - BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Weathering the Storm: Celebrating 6 years with Aspen Waite
On one hand, it seems only yesterday I was sitting in a meeting room of the grand Macdonald Hotel in the shadow of Windsor Castle for afternoon tea, listening to Aspen Waite CEO, Paul Waite’s keynote speech.
This was a networking event for all exhibitors ahead of the Great British Expo’s Thames Valley Event held at Windsor racecourse later that month; May 2017. On the flip side, this seems a short lifetime away. So much has happened in these last 6 years.
Paul was the keynote speaker, making his inaugural ‘free-reins’ speech where he was sharing insights into both his varied business and personal life. I was intrigued to hear more from this wise & interesting man who clearly was not scared to divulge some of his innermost business & life secrets.
I was sharing a table for tea (think afternoon tea at the Ritz) with several Aspen Waiteys; little did I know they would go on to become colleagues & friends. I was later approached by another one of the senior Aspen Waiteys who suggested we meet for a coffee & catch up to see how we might be able to support one another in business. We met for coffee and an initial chat.
When I learnt that the Head Office was in Bridgwater, Somerset and very close to where I grew up, I took the initiative to
contact Paul directly to arrange an introductory meeting when I was home visiting family during July 2017.
We met in Paul’s office in Rubis House – a room full of an eclectic mix of sporting memorabilia, art, artefacts, bookshelves packed with interesting reads; all which gave an insight into Paul’s incredibly varied interests, hobbies & life experiences. We seemed to share a similar outlook & philosophy to life, chatted for a couple of hours and before the meeting was out, I was honoured to be asked to join the team on a consultancy basis.
Initially I was involved in project work regarding defining processes, though this soon developed into becoming an Introducing Partner for Aspen Waite and consequently Business Development Manager, with a particular focus on the Research & Development Tax Credit side of the business, which is something I enjoy & find rewarding to this day. What’s not to love about helping businesses reduce their tax liability?
I have worked for the company on a part-time basis for 6 years now. Whilst for the most part I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Aspen Waite, it has not all been plain sailing (though an absolute highlight was a sailing away-day on the Solent)! In fact, these last 6 years could be likened to the sea and changing
of the tides as it ebbs & flows. Firstly there was the tsunami of rapid and skyrocketing growth (2015-2020) to the ebbing tide aftermath of the pandemic in the years to follow. Of course, Aspen Waite are not alone in this sometimes queasy trend and safe to say every business has had to dig deep to get through the challenges of the last couple of years’ Covid & beyond.
However, sadly not all businesses have been as resilient as Aspen Waite, and its longevity –celebrating 30 years in business - is testament to Paul’s sheer determination, grit and resolve to succeed and be the best CEO he possibly can.
Without a doubt he is an extremely hard-working man, with a seemingly endless energy & propensity to generate business and indeed foster businesses. Not only is he a great accountant to his clients, though also a great mentor & friend. I have witnessed him selflessly take floundering businesses under his broad wings and help them weather the storm.
Aspen Waite could be likened to a sea-faring vessel. As is the reality of life at sea, there are times when the Captain of the ship is not happy, and he doesn’t hold back from letting his crew know. However, as with every storm, these times pass, and the calmer waters return.
18
Paul has a big heart, and he is not afraid to wear it on his sleeve.
During the height of the pandemic & the heyday of the dreaded furlough scheme, I recall Paul saying he would rather work night & day than make a member of staff redundant.
He stood by that, and to my knowledge has barely had much more than a handful of days holiday since the pandemic. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Paul on his 30-year business anniversary. What an incredible achievement that is.
I am truly sorry to be missing the birthday party celebrations as Paul also knows how to throw a GREAT party! I will be there in spirit, as I take part in the Thames (Open Water Swimming) Marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support (had to get a swim plug in somewhere!).
Here’s to the next 30 years of Aspen Waite, her Captain and all those who set sail with her.

A Leap of Faith: Almost a Decade at Aspen Waite
I joined Aspen Waite in November 2014 after meeting Paul for the very first time a few weeks prior. My old boss, Darren Horne, had suggested we had breakfast together to see if there was an opportunity for me.
Armed with my portfolio and cursing the fact I’d forgotten to wear a belt, I met Paul at the Tudor. Before we’d finished the tea and toast, I’d been offered a job - and to live in the company flat in Bridgwater. Considering I was in the process of ending another tenancy, this could not have come at a better time.
I have never met anyone in my life who would have offered this level of generosity - certainly not to someone they’d just met. Not one for contracts or unnecessary paperwork; we had no formal agreement on the accommodation; so I figured if I didn’t pass my probation, I’d just move in with Darren.
As mutual fans of horse racing; to use a metaphor - I was moving up in class; and Paul was backing an unexposed horse. Something Paul is known for saying is “The answer is yes; what’s the question?” and this was a prime example of that mantra.
I never did have that probation review; but here I am 9 years later; and I like to think the gamble has paid off for both of us.
Paul often attributes the strapline “the Aspen Waite Way” to myself; but the values the phrase embodies are those that Paul has always tried to instil in clients and colleagues alike.
There have been some ups and downs along the way; but Paul has always backed me even when I’ve fallen at the final hurdle; and for that I am very grateful.
I have learned a huge amount about business in my time with Aspen Waite. My role; while lacking structure and organisation; does mean I have had the opportunity to get involved with most aspects of the company at one stage or the other and that is an invaluable experience from a learning and “real world” view.
Certainly eye opening at times – and I have no doubt there is much burden to be carried. I’m pleased to have helped lighten the load along the way.
Wishing Paul, family, friends and colleagues a very happy 30th anniversary. Ross

The Top 5 MilestonesCareer
Every career journey is defined by significant moments that not only validate the path taken but also contribute to personal growth. Let’s delve deeper into Paul’s top five career milestones that have defined his journey with Aspen Waite:
2.
Riding 1,036 miles in just eight days, from John O’Groats to Land’s End, was more than just a physical endeavour for Paul. It was a journey of self-discovery and resilience that transcended the physical plane. Each pedal stroke symbolised a step forward in overcoming challenges, each mile marker passed, a testament to unyielding determination. As he crossed the finish line, he wasn’t just a more physically robust person but also carried with him newfound self-respect and a deep understanding of his own capabilities and raising £20,000 for charity!
Representing the TJ Group at the National Haulage Awards was not only an honour but also an affirmation of Paul’s rightful place in the industry. Sharing the stage with leading figures, laughing at the humorous anecdotes of the host Jeremy Clarkson, and basking in the recognition of the industry’s finest, Paul felt a deep sense of belonging. That night, under the glimmering chandeliers of the Royal Albert Hall, he realised he wasn’t just a part of the industry; he was shaping its future.
3. Being recognised for our Outstanding Achievement in the Somerset Business Awards, and shortlisted multiple times as Best Firm in Accountancy Awards.
Recognition can be the most rewarding form of validation, especially when it comes from those who understand your work’s intricacies. For Paul, being nominated not once but twice (in 2015 and 2017) for the Best Firm of Accountants in the National

Accountancy Awards, was the crowning glory of years of hard work, innovation, and dedication. Each nomination was a testament to the high standards Aspen Waite had upheld and the value it had consistently delivered to its clients. The biggest win came during the pandemic when Aspen Waite and Paul won Outstanding Achievement to Business, thanks to the commitment to business and the community during a time of great uncertainty.
4. Winning the First Group contract
Winning a contract is a significant achievement for any business, but for Paul, winning the First Group contract was a landmark event. This accomplishment, coming at the end of his second year, reflected his dedication, expertise, and the trust his clients placed in him. The consequent promotion to European Managing Consultant wasn’t just a new title; it was a reflection of his capacity to lead, innovate, and drive success - qualities that would continue to define his journey with Aspen Waite.
Looking at the numbers on the first year’s accounts was not just a financial assessment for Paul; it was a deeply satisfying reflection of his efforts. Seeing the tangible success of his personal drive and dedication filled him with a sense of accomplishment. But more importantly, it marked a crucial turning point in his journey - a point where he found peace within himself, understanding that his journey was not defined by external metrics alone but by his inner resilience and passion.
Each of these moments, these milestones, weren’t just points in time. They were experiences that shaped Paul, moulding him into the leader he is today. They were moments of realization, validation, and triumph that continue to inspire his journey with Aspen Waite.

Best Single: ‘Hate To Say I Told You’ by Hives, Public Image and Just Because by Janes Addiction
‘Hate To Say I Told You So’ by the Hives is more than just a favourite tune for Paul. Its pulsating beats and dynamic vocals resonate with Paul’s lively spirit and zest for life. This high-energy track has often served as an auditory fuel, driving him through long work hours and helping him celebrate professional milestones.
Best Films: ‘Forrest Gump’, ‘Gladiator’, ‘Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Field of Dreams’
‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Gladiator’ represent two cinematic experiences that left a profound impression on Paul. The beautiful storytelling and profound life lessons in ‘Forrest Gump’, coupled with the resilience, honour, and strength showcased in ‘Gladiator’, have deeply influenced Paul’s perspective towards life and work. These movies continue to inspire him, reminding him of the power of determination and integrity.
Paul hates injustice. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were superb in the Shawshank Redemption. The way Tim gets his revenge over the Governor is legendary. I love Kevin Costner, and the Field of Dreams inspires me. ‘Build it and they will come’and it’s true.
Best TV Series: ‘Foyles War’
‘Foyles War’ stands out as Paul’s favourite TV series, largely owing to the stellar performance of
Michael Kitchen. The rich narratives, set against the backdrop of historical events, resonate with Paul’s love for deeply woven stories and his admiration for well-executed performances.
Greatest Moment: England winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup
As a sports enthusiast, the victory of England in the 2003 World Cup holds a special place in Paul’s memories. Not only was it a moment of national pride, but it was also a testament to teamwork, dedication, and the spirit of sportsmanship - values that Paul carries into his professional life.
Best Horse: Frankel (Flat) and Denman (Jumps)
In the world of equestrian sports, Frankel and Denman stand as symbols of excellence for Paul. Watching these equine athletes in their element, be it on the flat or over jumps, has been a source of thrill and excitement. Their speed, agility, and strength mirror the qualities Paul values and cultivates within his team.
Best Comedy Series: ‘Father Ted’ and ‘The Fast Show’
Laughter, they say, is the best stress-buster, and Paul finds his dose of humour in ‘Father Ted’ and ‘The Fast Show’. These comedy series, with their wit, satire, and relatable humour, have often provided him with much-needed comic relief amidst the daily rigors of work.
Happiest Moment: Sitting in his seat at The Rec
For Paul, happiness is found in simple pleasures, like sitting in his seat at The Rec, soaking in the atmosphere, enjoying the camaraderie of fellow fans, and watching his favourite team play. These moments serve as a reminder of the joy found in community, shared passions, and the simple act of being present.

The Story Behind Evolution Music
Evolution or Revolution – The story behind Evolution Music
In a world where the global climate crisis demands urgent action, innovative initiatives are emerging across industries to minimise their environmental footprints. The music industry, with its history of producing physical records and contributing to waste generation, is no exception. Amid this challenge, the origins of a groundbreaking environmental venture lie with Roulette Media, a small record label and media company driven by the principles of permaculture ethics: Earth care, People care, and Fair share. Roulette is part of the Aspen Waite broader media world and sits proudly alongside its sister companies at Aspen Waite Music.
The inception of a Roulette ‘Earth Care Project’ can be traced back to co-founders Marc Carey, Steve Charter and Adrian Clarke. Inspired by the idea of harmonious coexistence with nature and society, Marc and Adrian brought permaculture ethics into the business utilising skills and expertise developed from earlier work with Steve.
While the label had been successful in adhering to the principles of ‘people care’ and ‘fair share’, the team realised they had yet to address the crucial aspect of ‘earth care’.
The pivotal moment arose when one of the artists under the Roulette roster began achieving breakthroughs, prompting the team to plan for an album release.
Adrian posed a crucial question that would change the trajectory of their business: “What about the ‘earth care’ element?” It was this inquiry that sparked the birth of the ‘Roulette Earth Care
Project,’ and led to the formation of a brand new entity – ‘Evolution Music’ - an ambitious endeavour to introduce sustainability into the heart of the music industry.
Recognising the urgency of environmental issues and driven by a desire to reduce their ecological impact, the team embarked on a journey to find solutions. The initial focus was on exploring alternatives to conventional plastic used in record production. After considering recycled plastics and bioplastics, they decided to place their bets on bioplastics due to their potential to address multiple environmental concerns and open up exciting possibilities for the industry.
With no other entities found to be exclusively dedicated to environmental solutions in the music industry, the Evolution Music (EM) team realised that a new company would be needed to single-mindedly pursue this noble cause. Thus, a new path was forged, and an arduous Research and Development (R&D) journey commenced. This involved finding the right partners and collaborators who shared their vision and objectives, as well as securing early-stage investments to propel their mission forward. The road to success was anything but smooth. The additional challenges posed by Brexit and the disruptive COVID-19 pandemic tested their resilience. This was exemplified when an incident with a courier company (during the pandemic era), where multiple packages were sent to different (incorrect) places simultaneously, symbolised the hurdles they had to overcome. However, with determination and the support of pressing plant partners, and industry changing organisations such as Music Declares
Emergency, and Brian Eno’s Earth Percent team, they persisted in their mission.
Bootstrapping their progress, the business relied on initial finances from supportive friends and ethical business contacts, coupled with grants and collaboration with like-minded partners. Sweat equity from the founders played a pivotal role in propelling the project forward, reflecting their unwavering commitment to this urgent project.
Throughout their journey, the EM Team have collaborated with numerous prominent entities in the music industry, including GZ Media, Vinyl Factory, Deepgrooves, Vinyl Presents, Press on Vinyl, Viryl Tech, Abbey Road studio engineers, Beggars Group, Ninja Tune, BMG/Bertelsmann/ Sonopress, HMV, AIM Climate Action Group, Music Declares Emergency, Earth Percent, BPI. They have also worked with some of the world’s greatest artists including Michael Stipe, Coldplay, Nile Rogers, Hot Chip, Robert Smith, Jacob Collier, Beatie Wolfe and many more
As the project continues to evolve, the music industry is taking a vital step towards a more sustainable future. EM’s dedication to earth care, people care, and fair share not only sets an example for others in the industry but also demonstrates how creativity and innovation can drive meaningful change in the face of environmental challenges. With their harmonious blend of art, ethics, and enterprise, they are amplifying the music industry’s role in caring for our planet, one bioplastic LP at a time.
28
So what is this ‘Bioplastic LP’?
Evolution Music has now emerged as a trailblazer, spearheading a groundbreaking initiative with their Evovinyl™ bioplastic LPs. Through meticulous research and strategic supply chain relationships, the company has unlocked the potential for a more eco-friendly future without compromising on quality or production efficiency.
The Evolution Music team recognised that traditional PVC LPs had a significant impact on the environment due to their non-renewable raw materials and lack of biodegradability. To address this, they focused on evolving the production process, making a pivotal shift by adopting bioplastics as a replacement for PVC. Unlike PVC LPs, the manufacturing process for Evovinyl™ bioplastic LPs remains fundamentally the same, with only the raw materials undergoing a sustainable transformation. With their commitment to sustainability, Evolution Music embraced complementary people and planet-friendly packaging for the Evovinyl™ LPs. This further reinforced their dedication to minimising the ecological footprint of their products from inception to delivery.
The Evolution team worked diligently with various pressing plants to ensure that the switch to Evovinyl™ was seamless
and efficient. Extensive trials were conducted using different types of pressing machines to validate the viability of Evovinyl™ for commercialscale production runs. These efforts ensured that the transition to bioplastic LPs did not compromise the quality or productivity of the pressing process.
One of the remarkable features of Evovinyl™ is its ability to reduce energy consumption during production. Through lower production temperatures required for processing the Evovinyl™ material, the initial projects have demonstrated approximately 15% energy savings. In some cases, this energy-efficient advantage has translated to a substantial increase in output per hour during commercial-scale production runs, reaching up to an impressive 50% higher output.
Beyond the environmental benefits, Evovinyl™ sets a new standard for sustainability by creating virtually zero waste. Any leftover materials or trimmings from the manufacturing process are repurposed to create ‘Evovinyl regrind’ LPs. These regrind LPs maintain the same level of quality as their virgin Evovinyl™ counterparts, eliminating waste and contributing to a circular and sustainable production model. The product’s nontoxic nature, coupled with its industrially compostable
attributes, further solidify Evovinyl™ as a true champion of eco-friendliness.
With the Evovinyl™ bioplastic LPs, Evolution Music Ltd has succeeded in delivering an all-encompassing solution to multiple environmental challenges. By addressing the issues of non-renewable raw materials, high energy consumption, and waste generation, Evolution Music is reshaping the music industry’s ecological impact for the better.
Their commitment to providing people and planet-friendly products and manufacturing options showcases a forward-thinking approach to sustainability. Through Evovinyl™, they have demonstrated that it is possible to strike a harmonious balance between artistic expression and environmental responsibility.
As Evolution Music Ltd continues to lead the way, it sends a powerful message to the music industry and beyond: the path to a more sustainable future lies in the hands of those willing to innovate, evolve, and take action for the wellbeing of our planet and its inhabitants.

“A PERFECT EMPLOYEE IS THE ONE WHO INSPIRES HIS BOSS AS MUCH AS HIS BOSS INSPIRES HIM… THANKS FOR BEING MY INSPIRATION PAUL”.
RHONA HOPE • HEAD OF PEOPLE
HR AT ASPEN WAITE
OK let’s admit it, Human Resources (HR) has developed a bit of a negative image! It’s often seen as a hindrance rather than a help, at odds with the commercial needs of the business. “Red tape, compliance, ticking boxes, timeconsuming...I can hear you all say.
HR is all about people but it is NOT pink and fluffy! HR management must add value and needs to be totally in tune with the commercial needs of our business.
Aspen Waite people are often referred to as the Aspen Waite family – we are Aspen Waite and we all succeed or fail together.
HR is a means to equip our business with the people we need to achieve our aims and ensuring we manage and develop our people with a longterm approach to achieving our business goals. We strive to make the running of our business easier by giving it a more competitive edge, by saving time and money and helping Paul to sleep at night!
Ultimately, Aspen Waite is only as good as its people – hence we rebranded ourselves internally as the People Department, to reflect that we understand that all employees are human and not machines!
The better our people perform, the better Aspen Waite performs. Our ideal is to have the right people in the right places working and performing to the standard Paul wants them to. (Paul’s “sausage making” and “ant” analogies come to mind at this point).
Paul puts his heart and soul into our business and he expects us to do the same, (but doesn’t always see that happening). At times we can all be infuriating!
We are all different, with our own agendas, our own priorities, all with different skills, strengths and weaknesses. We are all at different stages in our lives and we all have different likes and dislikes. So, actively managing people is an essential part of running the business. All of our HR systems and processes involved in employing people from recruitment to contracts of employment, performance management to disciplinary procedures, must take into account ever-increasing and ever-changing employment
regulation. And the only certainty is that employment law is always changing.
Aspen Waite is an SME, so our HR management must be appropriate for the size of our organisation. It cannot be the same as large, corporate HR, it must be practical and have a commercial focus that is in tune with our “vision, values and behaviours” and absolutely in tune with the needs of the business.
I strongly believe that we all come to work to do a good job. We want to feel that we belong, to get a sense of satisfaction, to feel appreciated and valued, as well as receiving some recognition for the contribution we make.
Unfortunately, there will always be individuals who do not want to do a good job: the minority whose agendas are around being disruptive, negative and complaining. We do not want these people in our business. There are also the people who want to do a good job, but are either out of their depth, have not had the right training or support, or are just not capable of doing the job that we need them to do.
It is our job to protect the business from the minority, to train those who want to perform and to support, encourage and develop everyone we work with.
The key to doing this is by putting the HR foundations in place. This means having practical HR policies, processes and systems in place, which will help us to test, measure and realise whether our people are doing what they need to be doing or not.
As Paul knows, running a business and employing people is not easy and there are and have been many challenges along the way.
The HR role is to get the right foundations in place to allow the business to continue to flourish for another thirty years!

Hello everyone, for those of you who do not know me I am Morag and I have worked at Head Office in Bridgwater as an Administrator for 5 years now. I am lucky enough to have some involvement with various parts of the business including payroll, accounts and R&D, making it a varied and busy role.
Running is not something I had ever really considered as a form of exercise that could be enjoyed. It was more something you did if you had to if your life was in danger or you needed to catch the bus that was about to leave without you.
It was something I had done under duress at school, but not since, so it came as a shock to me as well as everyone else when after a chance encounter with a group of runners on my way home one evening that I signed up to a running group.
I should explain that I was walking home from a swim session at the leisure centre when I saw this large group of people running towards me laughing, talking and enjoying themselves.
I was intrigued and when one of the ladies stopped to catch her breath and exclaimed ‘seemed like a good idea at the start!’ I could see the logo on her top. I was straight on the internet when I got home before I forgot what the logo had said and found the group on Facebook.
As luck would have it there was a beginners group starting in just a few weeks and so I signed up. The beginners group aimed to do the couch to 5k training in a 6 week period with a Parkrun at the end as a sort of graduation. After the first session I could barely walk up the stairs to my flat and wondered what on earth had possessed me to do such a thing. After a couple more sessions my goal was to be able to run and talk at the same time. To cut a long story short.
I can now run and talk without too much difficulty, except up steep hills and run 5k on a regular basis for fun!
Race for Life is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, so it seems quite fitting to have a little bit about this wonderful charity in this edition of the magazine.
Race for Life has held a special significance for me since cancer took my mum long before we were ready to say goodbye (if you ever are?) and also my eldest sibling suffered with mouth cancer.
I’m sure many of you have also had to deal with the effects of this horrible disease. The charity raises money for cancer research in such a fun and inclusive way, that it seems like a good day out rather than raising some serious money for a very serious cause.
Three of us from the club decided to run the Race for Life in Taunton this year on Sunday 9th July. We all put on our pink tops (pink is the favoured colour), pinned our numbers on and our messages on our backs. Everyone who signs up for one of the events is given not only their number but a lovely sign to put on your back where you can write the reason you are running.
The atmosphere is always amazing at these events, everyone is there for the same reasons, to remember loved ones, raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.
There is always a fun warm up led by the organisers with some energising music. It a great way to have a laugh before the run, jog or walk.
The weather was a bit unpredictable on the day with occasional showers but very warm and muggy. The course went through fields over gravel paths and on tarmac, so you had to watch your feet in places.

MORAG ANDERSON • ADMINISTRATOR
After a couple of kilometres the sun came out in earnest making it even warmer for running, I think we were all wishing for a shower at that point to cool down.
After what seemed like a very long time, which of course it wasn’t, the finish line could be seen and we could hear the cheers as those in front of us finished and rang the bell.
It gave us that boost we needed to power on to the finish line and ring the bell ourselves and of course the longing for a cold drink and an ice cream also spurred us on.
We gratefully received our medals and watched as the constant stream of people came over the finish line. It honestly seemed as though twice as many people were coming back as went out!
All in all a good day was had by all and a lot of money was raised!

1036 MILES - 8 DAYS
CYCLING JOHN O'GROATS TO LAND'S END
Twelve years ago, I cycled 1036 miles in 8 days at just under 17 miles an hour. I cycled up every hill with comparative ease because I trained and I trained. Fifteen months of preparation.
I cycled 17 mile circuits which included two hills and I never took more than one hour per circuit. Gym work was a part of my training and during this, I set my all-time best (at the age of 50) 4413 calories in one train. You try doing that. I am in Gym 1610 which is good for competitive people like me because there is usually a gym challenge once a year, usually for a charity.
My all-time high achievement was coming 2nd out of over 1000 people worldwide. This is based on the number of moves. Challenges are up to 4 weeks. Many of you will know that I nearly died because of my overly large heart, basically. I was scared of going to the gym for quite some time. The last challenge I entered, given my medical condition, I was nearer last than first.
Over the last year in particular, I have started to work again. Not the man I was, but better than most men. I was asked to join the challenge which started last Monday because the instructors know I always give 100%. I had no expectation, I was pleased to enter to help my gym and I always train that little bit harder. To my amazement, I ended week one in 6th place, averaging nearly 1200 moves a train.
I am proud of myself and it just shows what can be done. I am not much good for anything after but even at 63, nobody trains harder than me.
I'm old and I get a lot of stick, so I'm pleased to send out a very positive report. I'm sorry if any of the below sounds conceited. I don’t believe it is because it is all true.

Navigating the Entrepreneurial Journey:
A Fireside Chat with Paul Waite and Alec Jones-Hall
Paul, thank you for joining us today. Can you start by introducing yourself to our audience?
Certainly. I’ve always been a curious individual, ever since I can remember. As a child, I was quite precocious and had a high IQ from a young age. This curiosity and drive followed me into adulthood.
Can you briefly describe your role as the CEO of Aspen Waite?
I founded Aspen Waite in 1993 and have been running it since then. It started as a one-person venture and has grown significantly since.
During the COVID pandemic, you’ve shown a lot of passion for supporting SMEs and business. Can you tell us more about your motivation behind this?
My motivation for supporting SMEs stems from my own experience as a business owner. I can relate to every single issue a business owner has, regardless of the stage they’re at.
Why, in your opinion, should you be talking about the life of an entrepreneur today? What unique perspectives do you bring to the table?
My unique perspective comes from my vast experience. I’ve worked in various capacities, starting as a young boy helping the financial director of a large company, to my role as a senior manager for a top 10 firm, and then transitioning to a corporate specialist. I’ve also worked overseas, particularly in California.
How do you see the future of SMEs and entrepreneurship in the wake of the pandemic?
What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs today?
I believe that understanding the
complexity and challenges of running a business comes with time and experience. My advice to budding entrepreneurs would be to embrace the journey. I believe it’s taken me 29 years to get close to being very good at what I do. So, patience and perseverance are key. You’ve often taken on diverse roles in your entrepreneurial journey, from running a large food company to working in a charity. What drives you to embrace such a wide array of challenges?
I think it boils down to my innate entrepreneurial spirit. I don’t fear the idea of jumping into different sectors or roles, whether it’s a large food company, a charity, or something entirely different. However, it’s important to note that there’s more to being an entrepreneur than simply jumping from business to business. It requires courage, the right attitude, and a certain state of mind.
You’ve mentioned that courage is an essential trait for an entrepreneur. Can you elaborate more on this?
Absolutely. As an entrepreneur, you are often stepping into the unknown, taking on projects or challenges that others may shy away from. This requires a degree of courage. Courage to take risks, to face potential failure, and to keep going regardless of the obstacles in your path.
Attitude and state of mind also play a significant role in your entrepreneurial journey. How do you maintain a positive and productive state of mind, especially when facing challenges?
In order to explain this, I’d like to share a story. When I decided to cycle 1,036 miles
from John O’Groats to Land’s End via Portsmouth, I saw that around 10,000 people had completed this route the year before. So, my thought process was, if 10,000 people can do it, so can I. This is the attitude I carry in all my ventures. I don’t let fear of learning a new skill or understanding a new industry hold me back.
You’ve often exceeded the expectations set by others, like your journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End in less time than the average person. How does this mindset impact your work as an entrepreneur?
I believe in not being average. When the hotel owner told me that people usually take 13 days to complete that cycling journey, I decided to do it in eight. This mindset translates into my work as an entrepreneur - I continuously strive to exceed expectations and not settle for average results.
Over the years, you’ve also developed a strong sense of philanthropy. How has this impacted your work and your approach to entrepreneurship?
In recent years, I’ve become increasingly philanthropic. This has significantly shaped my approach to entrepreneurship. I believe in being egalitarian, aspirational, and even have socialist leanings, though not in the traditional business sense. I think it’s crucial to contribute positively to society as an entrepreneur, and this has been a driving force in my work.
Was it difficult to manage a growing business?
No, the hardest bit was getting through the first year after start up. As i came from a large corporate background I have felt more comfortable as we got bigger.

Toward a Greener Future: Harnessing Voluntary Carbon Credits
Today, the growing problem of greenhouse gas emissions is causing serious environmental issues. As businesses, one critical method we can use to curb this crisis is the purchase of voluntary carbon credits, an effective solution that enables us to offset our carbon emissions and contribute to global sustainability efforts.
Demystifying Voluntary Carbon Credits
Voluntary carbon credits, also known as carbon offsets, are essentially tradeable certificates. Each represents the reduction, avoidance, or sequestration of one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases (GHGs). These credits originate from a variety of projects, including forest conservation initiatives, renewable energy projects, and methane capture endeavours. When we purchase these credits, we are effectively funding the valuable projects that lower carbon emissions worldwide.
These credits bear the title “voluntary” because, unlike in compliance or mandatory markets (such as those governed by the Kyoto Protocol or the Paris Agreement), their purchase is not a legal requirement. Businesses choose to invest in these credits as a proactive part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies or to meet internal goals for reducing emissions.
Navigating the Purchase of Voluntary Carbon Credits
The journey to purchasing voluntary carbon credits is relatively straightforward and can be summed up in the following stages:
1. Carbon Footprint Assessment: We begin by understanding the company’s carbon footprint. This is achieved by conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory to quantify the emissions stemming from the company’s operations. This covers both direct emissions from owned or controlled sources and
indirect emissions associated with the company’s activities.
2. Setting Emission Reduction Goals: After pinpointing their carbon footprint, businesses should set realistic yet ambitious goals to reduce their emissions. These reductions should stem from internal changes such as improving energy efficiency or transitioning to renewable sources, supplemented by purchasing voluntary carbon credits.
3. Finding a Reliable Credit Provider: The market hosts numerous carbon credit providers, each offering a diverse range of projects from various regions. It is crucial to opt for a reliable provider whose projects have undergone validation by an independent third party, using standards such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) or the Gold Standard.
4. Purchasing and Retiring Credits: After selecting a provider, the company can proceed to purchase the required number of credits. These credits are then “retired” post-purchase to ensure they cannot be resold, thus maintaining the integrity of the credit system.
5. Reporting and Verification: Upon retirement of the credits, the company can claim the corresponding emissions reductions. These reductions should be reported in the company’s annual CSR report or equivalent and should be independently verified by an auditor to ensure transparency and credibility.
40
Striding Toward a Sustainable Future
Voluntary carbon credits offer a powerful tool for businesses aiming to offset their emissions and play their part in the global fight against climate change. By investing in these credits, businesses lend their support to projects that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also deliver vital co-benefits to communities and ecosystems around the world. However, we must remember that offsetting is only a single piece of the larger sustainability puzzle, and businesses must also diligently work to reduce their emissions directly. Together, we can march toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Partnering with Aspen Waite Legacy for a Sustainable Future
At Aspen Waite Legacy, we’re committed to providing our clients with comprehensive solutions to their sustainability challenges. We’re here to assist you with emissions offset modelling to accurately measure and plan your carbon offsetting strategy. Moreover, we also help you source Gold Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (GS VERs) which offer the assurance of a rigorous and comprehensive approach to offsetting. These credits not only represent a tangible reduction in carbon emissions but also contribute to the sustainable development of communities and ecosystems across the globe.

Literally fearless, a force of nature...
"You need to meet this accountant, Gary..."
“...he’s a bit different from other accountants, a bit like you really” These were the words uttered by a mutual friend and business contact Gill Tiney, back in the spring of 2016 at one of her group’s collaboration meetings. She said that she was itching for me to meet this guy in the west country who had a fastexpanding firm, and one that was different from so many other firms out there. I was planning to get in touch when up popped a message from the mystery man, Paul Waite on LinkedIn, saying “I hear you are a bit strange Gary, perhaps you may like to get in touch”. Certainly, an unusual message to receive from a stranger but I was quite flattered so got in touch and we were soon meeting up, at a hotel next to Reading station. I really liked what I heard and saw, and Paul seemed to have this “can do” attitude I really liked and hadn’t seen from an accountancy practice partner before - an entrepreneur!
I was a partner at CBHC Chartered accountants at the time in Chelmsford, who I had been with 16 years, rising ultimately to chairman, but feeling that perhaps I was a little too radical for some of my partners there and in need of a change of direction after that time. Ian Harris and I were the majority shareholders and had taken the firm through a period of consolidation, growth, merger, de-merger, rebranding. All the things you would expect I guess in practice where there is never a dull moment. I felt there was huge potential for R&D claims within the CBHC client base, given the innovative nature of many of the companies in our portfolio, many of whom I had brought into the practice and who had built successfully over the years. We had some great clients there and I always felt we could be
doing a lot more for our existing clients, with R&D tax being one of them. Ian didn’t really share my enthusiasm and felt that the turnover potential was only 10% approx. of what I was estimating so we clearly had strategic differences.
Paul came to visit us in Chelmsford and didn’t really hit it off with Ian when I was delayed with a client for the meeting. Paul was kept waiting in reception for 20 minutes by Ian, despite having travelled all the way in from Bridgwater that morning. Paul made his feelings known about this apparent rudeness and when I walked into the meeting, I could sense that they were not going to be “bosom buddies”.
The plan was that we would outsource our clients for R&D to Aspen Waite, but when I started analysing the data, as all decisions should be based on in my opinion, I began to realise the real potential for setting up a joint venture company, but with me and Paul and not CBHC and Paul.
I had been thinking about moving on as I did not feel that the pace of change was being embraced well enough by Ian and the team and that we should move more to a proactive FD type of service with our clients.
Having qualified myself in industry and commerce, rather than an audit background, my thought processes and instincts were different to Ian’s and although this sometimes-caused conflicts, we had worked well together, and 16 years is a long time for any partnership.
I therefore worked over the weekend on some numbers and presented them to Paul, which he emailed me back on in his usual decisive way, saying “let’s do it then Sir Garfield”.
Whilst I love data-based decisions, this also just felt right and gave me a successful exit route and good revenue for both parties from day one.
Paul’s entrepreneurial skills are legendary, and I have never come across any accountant at any firm or company quite like him. He has a huge intellect, makes big decisions daily and is literally fearless, also with a massive work ethic too.
He is an absolute force of nature, and you cannot help being influenced positively by his contagious energy. He has his difficulties, like all of us, but is also incredibly supportive and a man you need at your side in times of need. In Aspen Waite he has created profits and prosperity for many people over the years, amazingly 30 in all so far, with many more to come, I am sure. I am very proud to be part of t he Aspen Waite brand and can see us developing into a strong corporate finance and finance directors’ business now that our focus here on R&D has reduced. Being part of a bigger operation gives us the scope, size and credibility to provide these services and Paul has created a powerful ecosystem of advisors and cohorts across the Aspen Waite brand.
Here’s to the next 30 years Sir Paul!

The Decisions that Shaped the Journey
The trajectory of a business is carved by the decisions made along the journey. These choices can have far-reaching impacts, setting the tone, driving the strategy, and shaping the company’s identity. Let’s dive into the top five decisions that Paul made, which have been instrumental in shaping the destiny of Aspen Waite.
1. The iconic naming of the company, Aspen Waite
The decision to name the company Aspen Waite was not merely a branding exercise. This choice represented a defining moment in the company’s identity formation. In selecting a name that was both unique and memorable, Paul was laying the groundwork for a brand that would come to be recognised for its distinctiveness and stand out in the industry.
2. The transformative move of rebranding as a Professional Services Company
The decision to rebrand as a Professional Services Company represented a bold and strategic move in Aspen Waite’s evolution. Recognising the need to adapt to changing market dynamics, Paul led the company’s transition, marking a pivotal moment that allowed the company to broaden its service offerings, reach a wider audience, and reaffirm its commitment to providing comprehensive, professional solutions.
3. The strategic decision to establish our own Marketing Department
Recognising the importance of effective communication and branding in the modern business landscape, Paul took the crucial decision to form Aspen Waite’s own Marketing Department. This move was a testament to Paul’s forward-thinking approach and his understanding of the pivotal role that marketing plays in a company’s success. It empowered Aspen Waite to take control of its narrative, engage better with its clients, and drive business growth.
Innovation is at the heart of any successful business strategy, and Paul’s decision to implement the Introducers Model is a testament to that. This unique approach to business represented a significant departure from traditional models. It created new avenues for growth, allowed for the forging of strategic partnerships, and reaffirmed Aspen Waite’s commitment to innovative, client-centric solutions.
The decision to focus on R&D tax credits proved to be a game-changer for Aspen Waite. Recognising the potential that lay in this often-underutilised area, Paul led the company’s efforts in specialising in R&D tax credits.
This strategy not only set Aspen Waite apart in the industry but also provided immense value to clients, bolstering the company’s reputation as a dynamic and innovative firm.
Each of these decisions was a significant stepping stone in Aspen Waite’s journey, underscoring Paul’s visionary leadership. They have been instrumental in shaping the company’s trajectory, building its identity, and laying a solid foundation for future growth.

Pepperoni Pizza Sliders
A really quick and easy thing to make, and they taste delicious! You can of course substitute other ingredients to make whatever type of pizza you like. Maybe swap the pepperoni for ham, ground beef or sausage; or go for a veggie option. You can also add other toppings such as olives, peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms –whatever gets your taste-buds tingling.
Makes 24 sliders, but you’ll definitely want to eat more than 1.
Ingredients
• 24 Hawaiian dinner rolls or mini brioche buns (halved)
• 400g / 14oz pizza sauce
• 250g / 9oz mozzarella cheese (shredded)
• 170g / 6oz pepperoni slices
• 4 tbsp butter (melted)
• 2 tsp Italian herb blend seasoning
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180C / 450F / gas
2. Coat a 9”x13” baking dish with a little olive oil and place the bottom halves of the rolls into the dish.
3. Top with an even layer of pizza sauce, followed by the cheese, pepperoni and tops of the rolls.
4. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, Italian seasoning, Parmesan, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix well and brush over the tops of the rolls.
• 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese (grated)
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• ½ tsp salt
• ½ tsp pepper
• 3 tbsp flat-leaf parsley (finely chopped)
5. Sprinkle the chopped parsley over the top and bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until the cheese has completely melted.
6. Use a sharp knife to cut down the seams of the rolls and serve immediately to fully appreciate the cheesy goodness!
Note: If the tops of the buns start to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminium foil while baking.

Cocktail Corner
To celebrate 30 years of Aspen Waite, there’s no better way to get the party started than with some colourful cocktails. So how about having a go at designing your own special Aspen Waite Purple Creation?
You will need something blue and something red to make your purple and then mix and match other ingredients to your taste. Here are some pointers (all measurements are for a single cocktail)… Start with a tall glass and half fill with ice. Then pour in:
Ingredients
• ½ tbsp. blue curacao (or maybe a blueberry liqueur or gin – as long as it’s blue in colour)
• ½ tbsp. grenadine (or you could try crème de cassis, sloe gin, or cherry brandy – anything red)
• 2 measures (50ml) vodka (or gin, white rum, even tequila!
Method
You could also experiment with flavoured spirits, just make sure they are clear and not coloured. I have tried it with rhubarb gin and that was very nice.
• Top up to taste (and/or to get the shade of purple you want) with lemonade, soda or tonic. [Remember, lemonade = sweet, soda = neutral, tonic = slightly bitter.]
• You can also squeeze in some lime or lemon juice – whatever – be creative!
• Stir well, top up with more ice and enjoy. Oh and don’t forget, if you make something that hasn’t been made before, you get to name it!
