Sunak government was an embarrassment and the people had enough. Labour came in with a landslide victory despite polling less votes than under Jeremy Corbyn.

I have not voted for some time such was my level of disgust at the Tory betrayal.

The incompetent believe in nothing Tories have been replaced by the children pretending to be adults Labour government. I despair!

Welcome to the first but highly significant Aspen Waite Magazine of 2024.

We recently celebrated our 31st Anniversary and what a journey it has been.

The pandemic hit us hard and it has been very challenging, initially to deal with lower sales due to our network being closed down over lockdown and then the need to significantly reduce costs. Despite all the pain and the stress, I kept investing in our future, which took a great deal of courage.

This year has seen a resurgence that is now gathering pace; lots more audits, personal tax cases and special work.

The R&D department is also

growing again despite HMRCs best effort to destroy innovation in this country. I see this as a big growth area now with the cowboys riding out of town and the opportunist but technically deficient accountants moving away from R&D cases.

I must acknowledge the passing in April of my friend and close colleague Gary White, founder of Aspen Waite White with myself (often known as Aspen Waite London). He was just a little older than me and losing him was a big shock. It has though made me have a real think about my own life.

It is so important to live life to the full and I have always vowed not to die with any regrets.

My confidence in our Legacy product and my dear brother Mark has been repaid and it stands on the edge of great success. It started out very much as an environmental service business, but Mark has expanded our product range to include rates reviews, utilities reviews and cyber security products.

We are grateful to our partners Confex for the tremendous support and exposure to their network.

14 years of Tory rule, or more appropriately the party of No Belief; there was nothing that they believed in. They were most certainly no friends of business. Read my article “The Betrayal of Business by the Tory Government”. The

The forthcoming budget or the Halloween budget is likely to be the worst in my lifetime. We already know that new employment legislation is being introduced; the most radical certainly in my lifetime. It’s all about the employee, who cares about the employer?

Well we do and we are here to help, there is no need to get lost in the minefield, Aspen Waite People offers a comprehensive and highly personal HR service.

I am expecting to see increases in employer payroll taxes, inheritance tax, capital gains tax and I am very nervous about the potential changes to the R&D legislation. It is quite likely that entrepreneur’s relief may be further reduced or even abolished. It is a highly valuable relief so please do talk to us to see how you might still be able to make use of this and indeed, whether it fits with your circumstances.

I am very focused on exit strategies and succession planning. Every business owner need to think about his/her future;

Every business owner needs to be able to make good decisions at the right time. You can only do this if you are well informed on a timely basis. Paying lip service to the finance function and reporting is a false economy.

Our media offering goes from strength to strength and I hugely enjoy my shows. We are able to offer our clients a bespoke jingle, hosted podcast and training. We can film videos including drone videos and help you with brand imagery, internal magazines etc. I am a great believer in brand differentiation, it really makes a difference.

Since starting this piece my long-standing client and latterly friend David Cox has died after a longstanding heart condition. He was quite a character but he loved his family and he was quite astute. Blessed be David.

I think I should end on a positive note. I wanted to record how very proud I am that the one and only George Farwell is not only my client of well over 20 years but also my very good friend. George Farwell Ltd is now in its 72nd year of trading, an amazing achievement. I am spending a lot of time trying to ensure

Cal has played a great part in reuniting the Waite family, especially my Uncle Bill’s children Terry, Carol and Michael. Bill was a really brave man, a Regimental Sergeant Major and a Korean War hero. My paternal family hail from Cumberland and the Isle of Man mainly. Maternal side Somerset and Scotland.

My DNA results were updated on Sunday after Ancestry UK had managed to improve their geographical range. So for the first time I am 8% Netherlands and 7% German/Belgian. My level of Scottishness has increased to 24% and to my surprise my dad is marginally more Scottish than my mother. I am related to kings of Isle Of Man, England, Wales and Scotland.

It is a crazy world out there at the moment and business leaders need the best advice. There are too many accountants out there who don’t care, can’t advise and are not committed.

We can!

On The Road to Net Zero

Aspen Waite Legacy have joined forces with Net Zero Now, and we’re thrilled to announce the appointment of two dedicated Sustainability Champions to lead our efforts in reducing our carbon footprint. These champions are at the forefront of our mission, driving change and inspiring eco-friendly practices within our organisation.

What is a Sustainability Champion?

A Sustainability Champion is someone who goes above and beyond to promote and implement eco-friendly strategies within their organisation. These leaders spearhead efforts to reduce carbon footprints, minimise waste, and cultivate a culture of sustainability, driving meaningful change towards a greener future.

We spoke with Nathaniel, one of our Sustainability Champions, to explore his role, motivations, and vision for creating a more sustainable workplace.

Q&A with Nathaniel

Q: What inspired you to become a Sustainability Champion?

Nathaniel: “Recently, I took over as co-host of the Eco Show with Mark Waite on AW Radio. This journey has significantly broadened my understanding of how we can protect our planet. As my intrigue grew, I knew I wanted to apply to be one of our Sustainability Champions as soon as the opportunity arose. To ensure our qualifications, we underwent training to achieve our Carbon Literacy certificate.”

Q: Could you share a project you’ve led or completed to promote sustainability within the company?

Nathaniel: “As my role as a Sustainability Champion is just beginning, the main project I’ve been involved with is the Eco Show on AW Radio, which airs fortnightly on Mondays. We’ve hosted various guests and engage in insightful conversations, mostly with Mark sharing his knowledge and findings with me and the listeners.”

Q: How does your work as a Sustainability Champion align with Aspen Waite Legacy’s ‘On the Road to Net Zero’ initiative, and what impact do you hope to achieve through this journey?

Nathaniel: “As the Sustainability Champion for Lions House, my role is to monitor and decrease our emissions and carbon footprint. This will be a gradual process, but it’s a crucial step towards achieving Net Zero.”

Q: In your opinion, why is it essential for businesses to prioritise sustainability efforts?

Nathaniel: “Sustainability is crucial in today’s world; we only have one planet, and preserving it is the ultimate challenge. Fortunately, it has become a united effort in recent years. With so much at stake and significant changes needed, it’s important to dive in and join the eco movement. As Caesar says in the Planet of the Apes movies, ‘apes together strong.’ This sentiment reflects the vital need for every business to prioritise sustainability efforts.”

Q: What advice would you give to other businesses looking to enhance their sustainability practices and cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility?

Nathaniel: “My advice is to dive in! It can be easy to look for massive changes in search of greatness, but even small actions can make a significant difference.”

Join the movement today and begin your journey to Net Zero! legacy@aspen-waite.co.uk www.aspenwaitelegacy.co.uk

Autumn Budget Predictions

Autumn Budget Predictions

As Britain gears up for its Autumn Budget on October 30th, the new Labour government faces a challenging economic reality. With stagnating growth, falling living standards, and above-target inflation, the government has warned that the upcoming budget will be painful. “There’s a budget coming in October and it’s going to be painful,” warned Sir Keir Starmer in August. “The road ahead is steeper and harder than we expected,” said Ms Reeves at the Labour Party’s conference in September.

Ms Reeves claimed to have discovered a £22bn fiscal “black hole” in this year’s accounts. As a result, it is anticipated that the budget will almost certainly include tax rises. However, Ms Reeves has self-constrained herself with her pre-election promises not to raise income tax, national insurance, VAT, or corporation tax. Together they account for about 70% of all government revenue.

Capital Gains Tax

An increase in capital gains tax (CGT) rates is widely anticipated, particularly for residential property. Currently, the residential rate stands at 24% and may rise to 30%. We might even see the introduction of a top rate for gains exceeding a certain threshold. However, care is needed when raising CGT rates. Capital can be flighty, and high rates risk deterring investment.

The government may also consider removing the CGT annual allowance and merging it with the personal allowance for income tax. This change would mean that higher earners receive neither an annual allowance for CGT nor a personal allowance due to tapering.

Another area of focus could be triggering CGT upon death. Currently, a deceased person’s unrealised assets are

reset to market value, removing any historical gains from the reach of the taxman. The removal of this uplift at death, especially for estates that do not incur inheritance tax, is possible. However, this approach could present significant practical challenges, complicating the process of determining historic acquisition costs and capital expenses after a taxpayer’s passing.

Inheritance Tax

Inheritance tax is often referred to as a “voluntary tax” with the numerous planning options available to mitigate it. Only 4% of estates pay it, but many more people resent the idea of it. Writing a cheque to the government shortly after losing a relative is no fun. We anticipate that changes in this area may be on the horizon, with the possibility of introducing progressive bands for inheritance tax.

Lifetime gifts play an important role in inheritance tax planning. Currently, the gifting provisions are very generous, particularly concerning the ‘Gifts out of income’ provisions and Potentially Exempt Transfers. We may see the introduction of a lifetime limit on gifting or even a removal of the ‘Gifts out of Income’ exemption. Such changes would restrict tax planning but would still leave some options, like the use of trusts. The trusts are capped at the value of the nil rate band every seven years, after which a lifetime inheritance tax charge is triggered.

Pensions

Ms Reeves may be eyeing pensions. Changes like removing the inheritance tax exemption for residuary pension funds on death, preventing them from passing tax-free, could be introduced. We also anticipate the elimination of the current rule that allows pensions to be drawn down tax-free by beneficiaries if the holder dies before age 75, meaning all

drawdowns at death would become taxable.

There are rumours the Chancellor may introduce a flat rate of pension tax relief. This would change the current system, where basic-rate taxpayers receive 20% tax relief on pension contributions, higher-rate taxpayers get 40% and additional rate payers receive 45%. Instead, all workers would receive a uniform amount of tax relief regardless of income. Implementing such change would be politically difficult.

Other Potential Changes

The government has indicated plans to close the “carried interest” loophole. Under “carried interest” rules, private equity partners pay (relatively low) capital gains taxes on profits from buying and selling companies. Another possible reform is the tax regime for temporary “non-dom” residents, who enjoy special tax exemptions. Their main benefit is that they can limit the tax paid in Britain on income generated abroad.

Ms Reeves has a tough task ahead on October 30th. We hope any changes will have a transition period, giving taxpayers and clients time to adjust.

R&D Tax Credits Update 2024: Key Changes You Should Know

DREW ARMSTRONG - ASPEN WAITE MEDIA R&D TECHNICAL REPORTS

Drew here, you may know me for my role in the Aspen Waite Media team, but it has been enlightening taking a step into the world of R&D in recent months. I have picked up the mantle of report writer and have thus been introduced to the breadth of R&D projects our client base deliver –from Biomass-Based Mycelium Insulation to Glass Crushing, and even Horses on Treadmills!

A wild ride for sure, and great to see the diversity of businesses we work with in Aspen Waite. I have been tasked with providing you dear readers an update on recent R&D legislative changes, which HMRC claims will streamline the system, and better support

research-intensive companies. Let’s see how these developments may impact your business in 2024 and beyond.

Merging of SME and RDEC Schemes

One of the biggest changes is the merger of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and Research and Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC) schemes into a unified system. From April 2024, there will be a single 20% credit rate, simplifying claims and reducing administrative burdens.

Although this move creates consistency, it also affects the previously more generous SME scheme by reducing reliefs,

particularly for SMEs not classed as R&D-intensive.

This sounds simple enough, but for profit-making companies, the post-tax benefit is typically lower than 20% due to the corporation tax deduction, leading to effective rates like 16.2%. Lossmaking companies and R&Dintensive SMEs have slightly different effective rates due to enhanced reliefs and adjustments to surrenderable losses.

There are different calculation rates for claims covering the dates pre-April 2023, post-April 2023 and post-April 2024. Let’s take a deeper dive into company types, claim dates and percentage rates that apply:

Company categories are defined as follows:

Profit-Making SME: A small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) generating profits. SMEs are defined as having fewer than 500 employees, with an annual turnover of less than €100 million (approx. £86 million) or a balance sheet total of less than €86 million (approx. £74 million). These companies can reduce their corporation tax liability by claiming R&D tax credits.

Loss-Making SME: An SME that is currently unprofitable. These companies can receive a cash credit instead of a tax reduction through R&D tax relief.

R&D-Intensive SME: SMEs spending 30% or more of their overall costs on R&D (or 40% between 01 April 2023 and 31 March 2024), which qualifies them for enhanced relief. They must still meet the SME definition.

Large Company: A company that exceeds the SME thresholds (500+ employees, turnover above €100 million, or a balance sheet exceeding €86 million) and claims R&D credits through the RDEC scheme.

R&D-Intensive SMEs Get a Boost

Good news for loss-making, R&D-intensive SMEs. While general reliefs have reduced, R&D-intensive SMEs can claim an additional 86% on top of this standard deduction, effectively allowing them to deduct 186% of their qualifying R&D expenditures. This results in a larger deduction, reducing their tax liability or increasing the payable tax credit if loss-making. This is a clear effort by the government to ensure smaller firms, especially those making breakthroughs, still get significant financial support.

Stricter

Claiming Procedures

Recent reforms have also focused on ensuring compliance and tackling abuse of the system. HMRC now requires more detailed documentation, including the introduction of a mandatory Additional Information Form

from August 2023. Businesses must provide extensive proof of their R&D activities, increasing transparency and the likelihood of accurate claims. Furthermore, new claimants or those whose last claim was more than three years ago now need to pre-notify HMRC.

Emphasis on Domestic R&D

As the government pushes to encourage homegrown innovation, rules around overseas expenditure are tightening. From April 2024, businesses can only claim R&D costs related to UK subcontractors or those that meet strict overseas expenditure criteria. This move aims to refocus the tax credit scheme on domestic growth and innovation, which aligns with the broader “Science Superpower” vision.

New Costs That Qualify

Recognising the changing nature of technology, the government has expanded the types of costs eligible for R&D relief. Notably, data and cloud computing costs, which are crucial to many modern research projects, are now included. This update modernises the scheme and helps businesses leverage cutting-edge digital tools in their R&D work. IT claims can still pose of a challenge and come under wider scrutiny, but in general this is a welcome change.

Enhanced Compliance Efforts

Due to widespread error and fraud in previous years, HMRC has ramped up its compliance efforts. Businesses can expect more scrutiny and a greater number of enquiries into their claims, so it’s more important than ever to ensure claims are accurate and well-documented.

We have changed the way we write reports, reflecting these stringent changes, and now have a client feedback process that helps us strengthen your claims even further. I feel this is a chance to build even stronger relationships with our clients and allows us to deliver a more robust product overall.

A Final Word

The 2024 updates to the R&D tax credit scheme represent both challenges and opportunities. While the merging of the schemes and stricter compliance requirements may seem daunting, enhanced support for R&D-intensive companies and modernised eligible costs show the Government’s commitment to fostering innovation in the UK. For businesses that invest in R&D, staying informed and consulting with experts will be key to maximising the available benefits.

That’s why Aspen Waite will always be here to give you the best advice, and help you achieve the highest claim value.

If you are an existing client and want to know how the changes outlined in this article could affect your business, we are here to help. Likewise, if you haven’t claimed R&D before and think your business may be investing in Research and Development, reach out for a free consultation with one of our experts.

Global Sounds, Local Heart: AW Radio‘s 2024 Journey

General Overview

This year AW Radio has built upon everything that took place in 2023. We’ve got a wide variety of shows covering everything from business to topical matters, to up and coming music, classic music, fitness, horoscopes, comedy, history, science and more. More specifically on the music front we’ve got specialist shows covering a plethora of musical genres from rock and metal to pop, rap, folk, alternative and so on, ensuring that you’re always up to date on your favourite genres while also enjoying the classics. The chances are whatever your taste in music AWR has a show for you. We’ve also had a real mix of amazing, inspiring and legendary guests on the radio this year with interviews from Olympic athletes, world class musicians, special forces legends, doctors, award winning film directors, business owners, actors, social media stars and even Druids!

On top of this we’ve worked to support our local community by helping a charity called The Light of Leighton via promotion, supporting live events and helping take care of paperwork behind the scenes. The Light of Leighton supports families suffering bereavement because of child loss, a cause I’m sure we can all get behind. The charity was founded several years ago by Bridgwater local Amber Roberts after the unexpected loss of her son. After Ambers tragic turn of events, she realised that the aftercare for such things in this country is severely lacking and now works to fill that void, taking what was an awful time in her life and turning it into vehicle to do good for others.

Presenters/Shows

Below I’ll give you a run down of all of AW’s current homegrown presenters and/or shows with the most up to date information, in large part from the presenters themselves.

How could we not start with the big man himself? Paul is of course not just the founder of AW Radio but the founder of Aspen Waite itself. This year on his premier show Albion’s Keeper Paul has greeted the world every week with his musings on a wide variety of topics and events whether it be of sporting nature, breaking news, historical or comedic, either by himself or with his guests which have included talented musicians like Glo Macari, Eleni Skarpari (stage name Echo Wants Her Voice Back), The Violet Mine and Annie Minogue. Perhaps most notably he’s formed a lifelong friendship with his guest of multiple shows, Emmy award winning director, producer, writer and musician Mr John Rokosny.

You can listen in to Albion’s Keeper every Friday evening at 6pm.

Paul also has his experimental show Down The Rabbit Hole which airs every Sunday night from 9pm. DTRH transports listeners to the boundless realm of Wonderland. Each week, Paul and his team delve into the whimsical tales of either Alice and her gang of misfits or the Red Queen and her royal entourage as they navigate their ongoing power struggle. With engaging music and lively banter, Paul brings this imaginative world to life in a way only Down the Rabbit Hole can —expect the unexpected!

The baby-faced assassin! Nathaniel is a diligent and reliable member of staff, always on hand to help everyone not just in the radio/media department but in the company as a whole. “At 21, I’ve been with Aspen Waite for four years, building my experience across a range of shows. From my early days on the breakfast show to the programs I’m proud to still host today, presenting has become a passion. I’ve refined my

style, exploring unique themes and pushing creative boundaries with each show”. Here’s a look at where you can find Nathaniel on the airwaves and what to expect from each show:

Rap Radar

“Catch us every Sunday from 6-8 pm for the best in hip hop and rap. Currently, we’re diving deep into full albums, playing two tracks each week from selected rap albums until we cover the entire work. Alongside this, you’ll still find our signature segments like beat battles, the wildcard, and creatively themed shows, keeping the vibe fresh and engaging for hip hop lovers”.

Scenarios

“Thursday nights, 8-9 pm, is where you’ll find Detective Stephen Smith from the 63rd dimension curating tunes that fit unique scenarios. Whether it’s a zombie apocalypse, a pirate adventure, or a hot summer’s day, Scenarios brings you a playlist as unpredictable as the scenarios themselves”.

With every spin of the wheel and roll of the dice, Russian Roulette delivers a selection of tunes from any genre and era, creating a surprise mix that keeps listeners guessing”.

On my Saturday morning 9-11am show called On The Horizon I play a worldwide selection of new, emerging exciting and unsigned bands and artists that are mostly sent to me directly from the acts themselves or via the many music management companies I seem to be on the mailing list of. I play around 30 brand new releases on every show and currently have around 200 songs sent to me every week requesting airplay.

Craig

Arthur

Our head techie and master of all things radio, Craig is the backbone of AWR as well as Head of IT in Aspen Waite as a whole, his invaluable experience of almost 30 years in radio and technical/procedural knowledge guides everything we do. “Every weekday morning from 10 until 1 I bring you a mixture of great music while keeping you up to date with what’s happening in the world of business. Everything from the latest sets of company results to

economic and consumer news as it happens, all alongside the best playlist of hits you’ll find on air.”

The Director of AW Radio, Calum works to ensure that the radio runs in Aspen Waite’s best interests, maximising creative potential while minimising costs.

“I’ve been working in AW Radio for four years now, in that time I’ve slashed costs within the department, overhauled the non-stop hits playlist to make it more in line with Pauls taste and vision and had several noteworthy moments, whether that be interviewing Olympic athletes, amazing musicians, special forces legends, Druids, doctors and so on for my topical show Pandora’s Box, delving deep into the archives of folk music with my old show The Forest of Gleeb, presenting a variety of genres and new music on Russian Roulette or bringing you the most complete and varied rock/metal program with my longest running show The Dark Dell. I try and keep things fun on my shows, but also informative in whatever manner I can, on Pandora’s Box that might take the form of experiences or knowledge from an interesting guest, on the music based shows its by researching and sharing a mix of the best up and coming music alongside old hits and the deeps cuts of the music world so you don’t have to”.

You can listen to Pandora’s Box every Monday night at 9pm, Russian Roulette every Wednesday Morning at 8am and The Dark Dell every Friday night at 9pm.

On the AW Media side of things Calum bagged a drone video job from Team GB Olympian Micheala Breeze Several months ago and is currently overseeing a massive project, a potential television show called The Rock’n’Roll Rowdies.

Sam knows more about cheesy 80’s and 90’s pop than anyone else on the planet, his enthusiasm for the genre is never-ending and this is reflected in his poptastic shows You Ok Hun show and Coffee Hour which always deliver that nostalgic disco vibe.

“What record did Sam Israel choose to spend his first pocket money on when his dad took him along to a second-hand record shop when he was five years old?

Abba’s 1975 eponymous album of course!

It was 1992 and Abba were big again thanks to the likes of Abba Gold released that year as well as Australian movies Muriel’s Wedding and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Featuring classic songs such as Mamma Mia, SOS and I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, this album ignited something in Sam that’s burned inside him to this day – a love of pop music.

Raiding his parents forgotten LP collection his childhood years were spent playing Blondie, Kate Bush, The Mamas and The Papas and other classic bands.

Then came The Spice Girls followed by Britney, then Christina Aguilera, then Girls Aloud – you get the picture!

As well as pop music, Sam has always had a passion for radio and the behind-the-scenes aspect of music. At 16 he did work experience at a radio station and went on to study Music Technology at college.”

You can listen in to Coffee Break every Thursday at 1pm and You Ok Hun every Saturday night at 10pm.

Geoff Rogers

Geoff Rogers has been working in radio for over 40 years! A real legend of the radio circuit, AWR is proud to broadcast Geoff’s rock show every Saturday night.

“The Saturday night classic rock show on Aspen Waite

Radio encapsulates just that, 5 decades of classic rock, heavy and on occasions very light and influenced by my work in radio during that period.

You’ll get classics like Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones as well as more modern stuff like Muse and some surprisingly light stuff such as Duran Duran and Johnny Cash.

I often go through some birthdays on the show and listeners are welcome to get in touch with me through our app or at geoff@ aspenwaiteradio.com to suggest tracks!

Join me every week from 6-8pm on Saturdays on Aspen Waite Radio for just the best classic rock - and an occasional twist!”

Other Shows

AW Radio also has several great shows/presenters that syndicate to our station, notably Neil Vessey’s “The Folk Hour”, Mark Stafford’s “Stafford’s World” and Marc Carey’s “UYC”, but in the interests of this article I only included show’s that were either home grown or exclusive to the station.

In closing AW Radio is a great station and truly is the sum of its parts, we have radio veterans of many many decades, world class techies, business experts, world class sports champions, professional mystics, music experts, outside the box thinkers, musicians and more as our team. All of these unique ingredients add up to make AW Radio a unique and worth listening to station and this is reflected by our fairly modest but loyal and outspoken core listener base who openly declare us the best radio station around.

Labours Plan to ‘Make Work Pay’

When I received a request to write for the latest Aspen Waite magazine, there was only one subject that crossed my mind as the most important to write about to all our readers. As workplaces keep evolving, we’re here to ensure that you are kept informed on the latest changes in Employment Law.

With employees now entitled to as many as 88 employment rights, it’s crucial to be fully aware of your legal responsibilities. And with no specific laws protecting employers, are you confident that you’re taking all the necessary steps to safeguard your business from potential risks?

In this article, I delve into the Employment Rights Bill introduced by the Labour Party, following their first 100 days in office. I have examined the key changes proposed within it and discuss how these could affect you and your organisation

The UK Government intends to bring in significant changes to employment law through its plan to ‘Make Work Pay’. The centrepiece of this will be their Employment Rights Bill, which is set to be introduced into parliament in early October.

The government’s plan includes a right to claim unfair dismissal from day one of employment, earlier access to certain parental rights, the removal of the waiting period for statutory sick pay and what’s being termed ‘the right to disconnect’ among a range of other measures.

As further detail and draft legislation emerges, Aspen Waite People will keep you informed and up to speed with the latest government announcements on its Make Work Pay plan.

The Labour Government’s plans to Make Work Pay are likely to change multiple aspects of employment law. The right to claim unfair dismissal from day one of employment, earlier access to certain parental rights, the removal of qualification periods for statutory sick pay and the right to disconnect are a few examples.

A commitment to deliver many of these proposals is expected to be laid out in a draft Employment Rights Bill during October 2024.

Use the tracker table below to keep track of the progress of relevant and notable pledges as they are revealed.

We will update the table as plans progress. The CIPD also provides news updates of our work alongside UK Government in this area, and all employment law changes are shared in the employment law timetable and, once confirmed, in the relevant employment law pages.

Read our analysis article from Ben Willmott, Head of Public Policy, on how proposed changes to unfair dismissal rules risk more insecure work.

Research by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) shows that stricter employment regulation is generally associated with a higher level of temporary employment and a higher proportion of people in temporary work who want permanent jobs.

If one of the UK Government’s objectives is to prevent the creation of more insecure work, policymakers need to understand if there are proposed changes to strengthen employment rights which could undermine this ambition.

RHONA HOPE - HEAD OF PEOPLE

Avoiding unintended consequences

A good example of where caution and potentially compromise revealed in the CIPD’s research is the proposal to remove the two-year unfair dismissal qualifying period as part of the plan to create dayone employment rights.

The government has suggested that probationary periods will still be enabled, but there is currently no detail on how this would work in practice and whether there would need to be new statutory rules around their use.

Discussions with CIPD members suggest that if there is more risk or complexity around hiring new staff and the use of probationary periods, employers will be more likely to prioritise hiring ‘oven-ready’ staff with proven experience. This could disadvantage young workers and other groups such as ex-offenders and the long-term unemployed with few qualifications. Employers may also increase reliance on temporary workers and the ‘temp to perm’ route into employment. This could worsen the UK’s relatively good performance on this indicator.

Moreover, it is not just the hiring process that day-one rights may affect. Some employers may tighten up the assessment conditions in probationary periods, reducing the slack for marginal performers who might otherwise be given the time and space to demonstrate they

can do the job.

Consequently, there is a strong case for the government to consider reducing the unfair dismissal qualifying period to 12 or 6 months, for example, rather than completely removing it.

Positively, the government has pledged to work in partnership with employers and consult on its legislative proposals which suggests there is real appetite to listen and where necessary, refine proposals to ensure positive outcomes for both workers and business.

The government has set itself an ambitious agenda to improve labour market performance, work quality outcomes and productivity. The devil is in the detail...

Wellbeing Corner

Embracing the Quiet: Mindful

Living During the Colder Months

As autumn leaves begin to fall and winter’s chill sets in, nature invites us to slow down and embrace the quiet beauty of these colder, darker months. Living mindfully during autumn and winter offers a unique opportunity to enhance our wellbeing by aligning with the natural rhythms of the season.

By recognising the individual qualities of these quieter times, we can cultivate a sense of peace and gratitude in our lives.

Autumn: A Season of Reflection and Gratitude

Autumn is the perfect time for reflection and the gentle release of what no longer serves us. The vibrant display of leaves changing colours is a reminder of the beauty in letting go.

Here are some ideas of how you could engage with the colder months:

Savoring Autumn’s Harvest

Nourish your body with the flavours of the season. Incorporate warming foods like squash and root vegetables into your meals to celebrate the earth’s bounty.

See John Porteous’s wonderful recipes for some great inspiration! Personally I think anything with cinnamon in is a must this time of year!

Making a Nature Table

Bring the beauty of the season indoors by creating a nature table. Display leaves, acorns, and other treasures from nature to foster a deeper connection with the outdoors. I sometimes like to take it one step further and sketch the little nature trinkets I have found.

Journalling

Noting the things you are grateful for and the lessons learned throughout the year is a great way to pause and reflect. Another thing I like to do is to note the physical changes I am experiencing around me - the colours of leaves, smell of bonfires and birds or animals that seem to make more of an appearance this time of year!

Let the Light In

When you find yourself dreading the loss of those daylight hours why not create more light and ambience in your home by using candles, putting up some battery powered fairy lights or investing in a Light Box (these are great if you suffer with SAD). There are some nice, affordable options online.

Winter: A Time for Stillness and Introspection

Winter is a time for introspection and rest. I’ve learnt through the years that fighting the darkness of winter and yearning for Summer is not the way to go, instead try these tips to embrace and even look forward to the quiet of Winter!

Get Cosy Indoors

Embrace the stillness with cosy indoor activities like reading, puzzles or knitting, creating moments of solitude and creativity.

Warming Up with Hearty Comfort Foods

Warm your soul with winter stews and soups. These comforting meals not only nourish the body but also bring a sense of solace during the colder months. Gingerbread or mince pie baking should absolutely feature somewhere in your Winter to-do list!

Connecting Through Winter Traditions

Nature Walks

Nothing quite beats wrapping up in your woolies, getting out into the cold, fresh air and taking a stomp in your local park, forest or even the beach. Particularly if you bring a flask of hot tea or hot chocolate along! Extra points if there’s a hot meal or pub lunch waiting for you at the end! Take note of the beauty around you, from the glittering frost to the vibrancy of a winter sunset. There is beauty in every season.

Gather with loved ones to find warmth and joy. Whether through holiday celebrations or simple gatherings, these connections offer comfort and belonging. One thing we really look forward to in our family is the annual Ghost Story Night, where we each pick a spooky tale and read them aloud to the group by candlelight. There’s always nice things to eat and drink. It’s one of my favourite nights of the year!

Spicy Pumpkin Soup

John Porteous John.Porteous@aspen-waite.

This is another recipe I pinched from a set of Caribbean Sailing Directions that I used to use when I was a Cartographer for the Hydrographic Office. It’s a very tasty way to use up the pumpkin flesh after carving your Halloween lantern. This recipe makes 2 pints (1.2 litres) of soup

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 2 celery stalks, diced

• 1 onion, chopped

• 1 tablespoon plain flour

• ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

• ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg

• A pinch of paprika

Method

1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat.

2. Add the celery and onion, and sauté until the onion is golden (about 10 minutes).

3. Blend in the flour, ginger, nutmeg, paprika and salt, and cook for 3 minutes.

4. Stir in the chicken stock and pumpkin, and simmer for 30 minutes.

• Salt (to taste)

• 3 cups chicken stock

• 1½lbs (680g) pumpkin, peeled and diced

• 1 cup milk

• 1 spring onion, chopped, to garnish

5. Mash until smooth (or use a blender).

6. Pour into a large bowl and then stir in the milk, blending well.

7. Garnish with the chopped spring onion and serve. This soup can be served hot or cold.

Squash, Chicken & Couscous one pot

A nice, simple hearty meal.

Pinched from BBC Good Food, but it is really tasty. Serves 4

• 2 red onions, halved and cut into thin wedges

• 2 skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized chunks

Method

1. Heat a large non-stick casserole dish on the hob. Add the harissa, spices and onions, stir and cook gently for 10 minutes until the onions are soft.

2. Add the chicken and brown for 5-10 minutes.

3. Add the squash and stir to combine. Add a splash of water if it starts to stick. Cook for 5 minutes more.

4. Tip in the canned tomatoes with ½ can of water. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes

• 2 x 400g cans tomatoes

• Zest and juice of 2 lemons

• 200g (8oz) cherry tomatoes, halved

• 140g (5oz) couscous

• Small bunch coriander, chopped roughly

5. Add the lemon zest and juice, cherry tomatoes, couscous and seasoning (salt & pepper to your taste).

6. Cover and turn off the heat. Leave on the hob for 10 minutes, then stir through the coriander and serve.

Greek Pumpkin Pie

This is a recipe I found in my Great Aunt’s cookbook. It is very yummy!

Ingredients

• 2lb (910g) pumpkin

• 2oz (60g) semolina

• 2-3oz (60-85g) sugar (depending on sweetness of pumpkin)

• 2oz (60g) butter

1. Preheat the oven to 230OC / 450OF / Gas mark 8.

2. Mix the pumpkin, semolina, sugar and butter in a blender.

3. Stir in the currants.

4. Line a flat-based dish with the puff pastry and spoon the mixture in.

5. Sprinkle the cinnamon, allspice and almonds over the top and bake for 30 minutes in the oven.

Mulled Cider

A lovely warming beverage at this time of year. You can have fun with this by experimenting with other spices. Why not try cardamom, or star anise, or a bit of nutmeg?!

Ingredients

• 1 litre (1¾ pint) dry farmhouse cider

• 12 cloves

• 12 whole allspice berries

Method

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 110g (4oz) sugar

Warm the cider in a large pan, add the spices, stir in the sugar until dissolved, then simmer gently for 20 minutes. Serve warm.

Garnish with a slice of orange, lemon or apple.

Preparing Your Business for Financial Success

A Guide to Finance Applications

Securing finance for your business can be a pivotal step in driving growth and innovation. However, to ensure a successful application, it’s crucial to present your business in the best possible light for underwriters. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you prepare effectively.

Director and Shareholder Preparations

Before applying for finance, it’s essential that both directors and significant shareholders are financially robust, as lenders will assess their financial conduct:

· Credit Reports: Obtain and review credit reports for all directors and any shareholders with over 25% ownership. Resolve any discrepancies in advance.

· Identification: Ensure all directors have valid photo identification.

· Company History: Avoid any association with liquidated companies, as this can lead to immediate rejection.

Business Financial Health

A clear picture of your business’s financial position is vital:

· Financial Statements: Prepare full, up-to-date accounts, including Profit & Loss statements and balance sheets. Also, consider creating a cash flow forecast to demonstrate your ability to repay the loan.

Evaluate the Return on Investment

Ultimately, consider the broader financial impact:

· ROI Consideration: Ask yourself, “Will this investment yield a return greater than the cost of the loan?” This reflection is crucial for making informed financial decisions.

By following this guide, you can enhance your business’s readiness for applying for finance, increasing the likelihood of a favourable outcome. With careful preparation and strategic thinking, you can secure the funds needed to propel your business forward.

If you are thinking about taking business finance and would like to discuss your options, please do get in touch with me at:

· Bank Records: Maintain orderly bank accounts. Avoid bounced payments and excessive overdraft usage. You’ll need at least three months of clean bank statements.

· Credit File: Regularly check your business credit file for accuracy and rectify any incorrect information promptly. Watch out for issues such as CCJs or any adverse data.

· Tax Compliance: Ensure your business is current with HMRC obligations, as this reassures lenders of your reliability.
