Ook het beeld van de kunstenaar zelf duikt op in de tentoonstelling: het zelfportret ‘Ubuntu’, tentoongesteld in de zelfportrettenkamer. In de gedaante van een sjamaan observeert hij de bezoeker door een glazen masker. Het transparante van het masker symboliseert hoe Vanmechelen zijn ziel blootlegt. Vanmechelen legt uit: "Ubuntu betekent in het Zuid-Afrikaanse Bantoe ‘Ik ben, omdat wij zijn.’ Het is een uitnodiging om het principe van deze Zuid-Afrikaanse filosofie te omarmen en een herinnering aan het feit dat wij allemaal deel uitmaken van een gemeenschap van mens, dier en natuur. Zowel op biologisch als op sociaal vlak, kunnen wij niet bestaan zonder de anderen." Na de tentoonstelling kreeg het werk een permanente plaats in de Uffizi-collectie.

Een realistatie op wereldniveau

Een spraakmakende tentoonstelling als deze realiseer je niet alleen. Steun is nodig, als je weet dat elk van de 30 tentoongestelde werken voor een aanzienlijk bedrag moest verzekerd worden. Partners van over de hele wereld werkten mee om dit te ondersteunen; afkomstig uit het buitenland, maar ook uit het Belgische Limburg, de streek waar Vanmechelen woont, en door velen wordt

In the guise of a shaman, he observes the visitor through a glass mask. The transparency of the mask symbolises how Vanmechelen exposes his soul. Vanmechelen explains: 'Ubuntu means in South African Bantu 'I am, because we are. It is an invitation to embrace the principle of this South African philosophy and a reminder that we are all part of a community of humans, animals and nature. Both biologically and socially, we cannot exist without the others. After the exhibition, the work got a permanent place in the Uffizi collection.

A realisation at world level

A sensational exhibition like this is not something you achieve on your own. Support is needed, when you realise that each of the 30 exhibited works had to be insured for a considerable sum. Partners from all over the world collaborated to support this; from abroad, but also from Belgian Limburg, the region where Vanmechelen lives and is appreciated by many. I think it is important to feel connected to the people locally and to be appreciated. The museum welcomes more than five million visitors geapprecieerd. "Ik vind het belangrijk om lokaal voeling te hebben met de mensen en geapprecieerd te worden. Het museum krijgt elk jaar meer dan 5 miljoen bezoekers over de vloer, maar het doet me vooral veel deugd om te weten hoeveel Belgen naar Firenze zijn gekomen voor de expositie."

Ook de komende maanden staat de agenda volgeboekt met tentoonstellingen over heel de wereld. Koen Vanmechelen en zijn team zijn net terug van Venetië, ter voorbereiding van de Kunstbiënnale. Volgende halte? Dat is Havana in Cuba, waar zijn werk in december te zien zal zijn in het Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba. We wensen hem alvast een fijne reis!

De tentoonstelling van Koen Vanmechelen liep van 18 januari tot 20 maart 2022 in de Galleria delle Statue e delle Pitture. Heb je de tentoonstelling gemist? In the coming months, too, the agenda will be filled with exhibitions all over the world. Koen Vanmechelen and his team have just returned from Venice, to prepare for the Art Biennale. Next stop? Havana in Cuba, where his work will be exhibited in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba in December. We wish him a happy journey!
