Een populaire private jet-bestemming voor wintersport is Courchevel in de Franse Alpen. “We landen vlak bij de skipiste. De reizigers zitten vaak al in hun ski-uitrusting in het vliegtuig zodat ze na het landen meteen de piste op kunnen. Zo kunnen ze langer skiën,” vertelt piloot Glenn Crab. Hij is één van de weinige piloten met een specifieke Courchevel-kwalificatie. Dit is een vereiste om te mogen landen in Courchevel, wat beschouwd wordt als één van de spectaculairste luchthavens ter wereld.

A popular private jet destination for winter sports is Courchevel in the French Alps. "We land close to the ski slope. The passengers are often already wearing their ski equipment on the plane so that they can hit the slopes right after landing. This allows them to ski for a longer time," says pilot Glenn Crab, who is one of the few pilots holding a specific Courchevel qualification. This is a requirement for being allowed to land at Courchevel, which is considered one of the most spectacular airports in the world.

Door de omringende bergen, kliffen en heuvels is het niet eenvoudig om er te landen. Er kan maar vanaf één kant gestart worden en vanaf de andere kant kan er enkel geland worden. Daarom staat Courchevel bekend als een van de uitdagendste luchthavens te wereld. Enkel piloten die een speciale opleiding hebben gevolgd en beschikken over een kwalificatie voor de Courchevel-site mogen hier landen en opstijgen.”

What makes Courchevel airport so extraordinary?

"The airport is located at an altitude of 2,000 metres. It has a remarkably short runway of only 525 metres. For comparison: an average runway is about 2 kilometres long, so that gives an idea of the level of difficulty... In addition, the runway has a slope of 18.5%, which means that no go-arounds are possible. Because of the surrounding mountains, cliffs and hills landing is not easy. You can only start from one side and land from the other side. That is why Courchevel is considered to be one of the most challenging airports in the world. Only pilots who have undergone special training and have a qualification for the Courchevel site are allowed to land and take off here."

Kan je iets meer vertellen over die speciale training?

“Tijdens deze training worden wij, piloten, opgeleid om de omliggende bergen en valleien goed te leren kennen in een bepaald skigebied. We leren ook omgaan met het weer in de bergen, dat zeer onvoorspelbaar kan zijn. De piste moet bijvoorbeeld volledig sneeuwvrij zijn om te kunnen landen. Als het ’s nachts zwaar gesneeuwd heeft en we willen ’s morgens vroeg landen, lukt dit helaas niet altijd. In dat geval kunnen we steeds landen op een luchthaven in de buurt zoals Chambéry, Annecy of Albertville. Dit gebeurt altijd in nauw overleg met de klant, want hierdoor verliezen ze reistijd. Onze voornaamste zorg is dat ze veilig en in alle comfort aankomen op hun bestemming en zo snel mogelijk van hun welverdiende vakantie kunnen genieten.”

Could you tell us a little more about this special training?

“During this training, we, the pilots, are trained to thoroughly familiarise ourselves with the surrounding mountains and valleys in a particular ski area. We also learn to deal with the weather in the mountains, which can be very unpredictable. For example, the slope must be completely free of snow in order to be able to land. If it has snowed heavily at night and we want to land early in the morning, this is unfortunately not always possible. In that case we can still land at a nearby airport such as Chambéry, Annecy or Albertville. This always happens in close consultation with the client, as they will lose travel time. Our main concern is that they arrive at their destination safe and sound and can enjoy their welldeserved holiday as quickly as possible."

The affirmed, persistent finish is redolent of peonies and white pepper.
