The future of Jio’s domestic model is ‘a one-stop destination for all customer requirements’, according to Khushboo Yadav, CEO, Jio Entertainment Services. For a business that started a mere seven years ago doing just telecommunications, Jio has made giant leaps. It now offers Jio Platform Limited, an ecosystem that includes services for streaming shows and music, games, news, even an online retail service — the dream of Khushboo and the leaders of Jio. While the transition from telco to entertainment and retail might seem abrupt, Khushboo views it as perfectly complementary. Customers coming to Jio initially for internet connectivity alone build up a pool of bodies that Jio is able to tap into. By being able to offer a slew of services in affordable bundles, Jio is able to capture these customers in industries outside of telecommunications before they have a chance to leak out into the world — sparing the resources on re-capturing these customers means juicier profits margins.

Khushboo Yadav CEO Jio Entertainment Services

Just being able to offer many services isn’t enough though. Khushboo stressed that the quality of each service is crucial in keeping customers. A fast and reliable 5G network or a diverse variety of shows for streaming — the core principles for each service still apply.

The Way Forward for China — Investing in Quality Content Quality is king when it comes to content. For Wang Xiaohui, Chief Content Officer & President of PCG Group, iQIYI, this has informed their shift in strategy over the last few years. “We want to focus on quality content,” he said at a session on the future of China’s investment strategy, moderated by Orina Zhao, Senior Analyst, APAC Research Lead, Ampere Analysis.

Wang Xiaohui Chief Content Officer & President PCG Group, iQIYI

Investing in original content will mean that they have greater control of IP rights, shared Xiaohui. Owning more IP will contribute to iQIYI’s monetisation strategy moving forward, even as the streaming landscape grows more competitive and challenging. Indeed, the past five years have seen more original content coming from iQIYI, targeted at the streaming audience. Why the streaming audience? “The streaming audience has become the majority now, so we have to produce more diverse content to appeal to them,” explained Xiaohui. With the streaming audience now being made up of varied demographics, catering to them with a broad selection of genres is key — while ensuring the quality of the content remains high. For example, reality shows appeal to the youth demographic. As stewards of Chinese content, Xiaohui added that “Content creators have a responsibility to elevate audience’s tastes.”

TV — The Cash Cow of Thailand “Some might call us the new kid on the block,” said Patompong Sirachairat, CEO, Mono Next. But that hasn’t stopped Mono Next from finding its blue ocean in the competitive Thai market. Patompong shared his insights on Thailand’s media landscape, at a session moderated by Jeremiah McMillan, International Content Executive & Strategist.

On the other hand, SVOD is better enjoyed solo. This contrast in viewing patterns with TV means that storylines on SVOD shows must be as compelling as possible, on par with that of Hollywood and Chinese productions.

As for what lies ahead for Mono Next, Patompong announced a strategic collaboration with Studio Genie. “It’s about knowledge exchange,” said Patompong of “TV in Thailand is still a cash cow,” observed the partnership. Content is King, Partners are Kingmakers Many of the world’s greatest works were collaborative efforts and show business is no different. In a market saturated with good shows, how do you keep up? “Learn from your partners,” said Coco Yang, CoFounder & CEO, Huanyu Entertainment. The partners Coco referred to are producers of dramas in Japan, Korean, and Thailand that are dominating the show business. She believes that the biggest mistake would be snubbing the experience of these industry players on their own homeground, where they best understand the audience and could greatly aid localisation. But quality content is just base camp on the mountain of success. Coco emphasized the need to monetise hit content to fuel the war chest for future projects and keep stakeholders happy. Huanyu Entertainment’s hit series, Yanxi Palace spawned a lucrative line of lipstick that

served as concrete proof, in Coco’s eyes, of the viability of such commercial partnerships. Coco also believes that the talent behind each successful series are important partners. Talent — writers and actors, among many — must be identified and groomed wherever they can be found, said Coco, who stressed the long-term mutual benefits in the continued production of quality drama.

TV & Video Wars: Advertising Strikes Back in 2024 “The worst has come to pass with regards to cord cutting,” said Tony Gunnarsson, Senior Principal Analyst, OTT Video, Media & Entertainment, Omdia. But everything points to advertising will come to the fore, whether it be on linear TV or SVOD services. With pay TV revenue plateauing, future industry growth looks to be dependent on revenue from anticipated online video growth. But there is also another factor at play here — that all major SVOD services will have an ad-supported tier by the end of 2024.

But streaming will not replace pay TV. In fact, SVOD will remain a companion service to pay TV. With SVOD services partnering with telcos to reach larger audiences, success will depend on bundling services — and whether industry players can find the magic mix of linear TV, SVOD, AVOD bundles.

In fact, online video advertising looks like it will be the main revenue driver for TV and video, with TikTok claiming the biggest share of the pie. In terms of revenue, it will be bigger than YouTube and Netflix combined, he said. “We’re going to see the range of perverse ways that advertising that creeps into TV and video,” Tony cautioned.

Webtoons: A New Frontier Webtoons have spurred the beginning of an unlikely new territory that brings great prospects for enterprise. Charlie Park, EVP & Head of Story Business Unit, Kakao Entertainment Corp, leads Kakao’s valiant charge into the unknown with their lightning acquisition of three major

webtoon platforms, Tapas, Radish, and Wuxiaworld. While acquiring platforms that do seemingly the same thing might seem redundant or suppressive, Charlie shared that the move was a big step forward in Kakao breaking into the Western market. The three platforms are not only English-based, they provide much needed diversity to Kakao’s offering of webtoon contents — Radish, especially, enjoys a niche in the romance genre. However, piracy can be an issue. Charlie shared that while they provide a wait-orpay model that lets readers legitimately enjoy content for free, piracy still exists. Kakao has been especially heavyhanded in dealing with piracy with a special anti-piracy department for good reason — a webtoon platform must protect its content, its creators, and the revenue they deserve. Doing so helps to retain fledgling creators, both on your platform and in the newly growing industry. This protected revenue also feeds into supporting more creators and expanding the market by increasing content and diversity.

CONFERENCE A truly insightful session that gave the audience a lot to take away— Live from Japan: Marco Nobili, Executive VP & Int’l GM, Paramount+; with Beverly McGarvey, EVP & Chief Content Officer, Paramount ANZ, and moderator, Cathy Yang, Host of Thought Leaders, One News (Cignal TV)

D E C hybrid 6edition

Together with Beverly McGarvey, EVP & Chief Content Officer, Paramount ANZ, he shared lessons learnt from the Asia Pacific market in a session moderated by Cathy Yang, Host of Thought Leaders, One News (Cignal TV).

“When it comes to Paramount+, not only can we tap into [our original content] that does good business in other markets,” shared Beverley, “it can also be used down the line on other platforms.” From an investment perspective, it provides great utility in terms of monetisation and serving audiences.

Good Storytelling Doesn’t Care Where You’re From Good storytelling is location-agnostic. No matter where it comes from, people will watch good stories — be they from Italy, Israel, or anywhere around the world.

Ganesh Rajaram CEO Fremantle, Asia & LATAM

“There was newfound appreciation for good content, good storytelling,” Ganesh Rajaram, CEO, Asia & LATAM, Fremantle, realised as the pandemic accelerated consumption of digital content from all over the world. “If you have a good story to tell, the barriers to telling it are getting less and less,” he revealed in a session moderated by Unmish Parthasarathi, Founder & Executive Director, Picture Board Partners.

“Partnerships are the keys to success,” said Marco. Their approach in Japan is one example of their global strategy, as they look at a multi-platform, multi-revenue stream strategy. This allows them to bring both a mix of content, both global and local, to customers.Marco spoke about the importance of co-productions. “We launched two originals globally, from Korea, that saw a lot of success — Yonder and Bargain.” Another five pieces of content are also in the pipeline.

When it comes to revenue and monetisation, “it always starts with the audience,” said Marco Nobili, Executive VP & Int’l GM, Paramount+. He spoke of a two-pronged approach — pairing global content offerings with local content created by regional partners.

Revealed: The Secrets of Revenue and Monetisation

ATF ATF 2023 2021

Other insights he shared were the rise of FAST (free ad-supported television) in India, where 80% of the population prefers to watch ad-supported free content, rather than paid subscription services. However, he acknowledged the difficulty in replicating that in this region, given the need to curate channels for each territory here.

“In the last 20 years, almost every country in Southeast Asia has got its own content that invariably draws more sponsors and advertisers than any foreign content.”

But perhaps the most heartening development has been the evolution of local content.

That is the undeniable power of good storytelling.

AI is Black, White, and Fifty Shades of Grey The legalese for AI usage in film production can always be written in black and white but, thanks to its nascency, every novel implementation sits firmly in a grey area. AI is already here — David Webster, Co-Founder, AI CREATE & The Carrot Collective, has directed a movie written entirely by an AI script writer named Benjamin. David professed a balanced advocacy for AI in production, saying while it will generate a lot of low quality content, David believes that it will increase the overall quality of art more than not. However, he cautions that a conscious effort must be made by the industry to consult creatives when regulating AI, since they stand to lose the most — especially, David stressed, where they may be misused by bad actors. Ross Goodwin, Creative Technologist, shares David’s optimism in the elevation of art. “It could even break genres,” said Ross, expounding the possibilities that AI could open to the masses, where more creators could use AI to realise their pursuits despite financial or physical limitations. Unsurprisingly, on the topic of fair use, Ross stands on the side of AI because of the potential good. “We are all influenced by the sum total of human output,” Ross argued, noting that AI does the same thing by poring through human-created material to produce its own art. Sophia Yen, Partner, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, argues a crucial difference —

The only AI Panel focused on the M&E industry within the region—a discussion that touched on business, legal and existential issues of AI in entertainment: Oscar Sharp, Director, Therefore Films; David Webster, Co-Founder, AI CREATE & The Carrot Collective; Sophia Yen, Partner, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP; Ross Goodwin, Creative Technologist.

the human creation process, and any mimicry, is largely subconscious, while feeding an AI material is a conscious violation of others’ intellectual property rights. How such a process must be regulated is a deeper discussion, whereas a more immediate one is whether producers must inform consumers when they are consuming AI-produced media. Oscar Sharp, Director, Therefore Films, opines that some audiences may value cheaply made epics, while others value the process of human collaboration behind each film. Oscar joking dubbed them ‘free-range’ and ‘organic’ films, but the need for labels is a potentially sticky issue. Nader Sobhan, Founder & Executive Director, IKTOMI suggested that much of the debate hinges on establishing the threshold at which you can consider AI use organic or not — something the legal system has not caught up to yet.

Moderated by Nader Sobhan, Founder & Executive Director, IKTOMI, the much anticipated panel— The Age of AI—was a captivating one, sat by global pioneers, shaping the narrative of what’s to come, hoping for collaboration for mutual growth, rather than constant clashes of survival 20

Reality Check: Getting up to speed with FAST: Kaushal Modi, Sr Vice President, Content Licensing & Partnerships, Jio Entertainment Services; Ed Love, Head of Business Development & Content Acquisitions, Samsung TV Plus; Alex Lowes, Vice President, Client Growth—Media Solutions APAC, GroupM Nexus

The FAST model is picking up speed in APAC, according to Tom Gennari, CEO, BB Media. A recent survey by BB Media gleans a few insights with a sample of over 80 key opinion leaders. Firstly, companies in APAC are only moderately invested in FAST, whether as an advertising channel or other means, but intend to ramp investment up by almost 50% over the next two years — a targetable gap, perhaps. 76% of respondents are also using, or plan to use, FAST as a form of revenue generator. This corresponds with the optimistic outlook on FAST, with 70% believing in FAST’s mid to long-term popularity.

But how do other industry experts weigh in? Kaushal Modi, Senior Vice President, Content Licensing and Partnerships, Jio Entertainment Services, hails from India, one of the ripest markets for FAST implementation. “We have a huge underserved market of over 500 million subscribers who are watching or want to watch content without paying,” Kaushal said, pointing out the enormous domestic demand there. In fact, their transition program to a FAST-inclusive model was nothing short of textbook — Jio TV partnered with existing broadcasters to implement advertisement markers in their linear programmes, while curating existing content into rebranded FAST channels to add value for consumers. The issue now, however, is the glut of content choking up platforms. Consumers now spend more time choosing content than watching, according to Ed Love, Head of Business Development and Content Acquisitions, Samsung TV Plus. FAST can be an elegant solution, he added, especially if enhanced with sophisticated curation in future. But for all its wonders, providers should not oversell FAST. “It will never be a frontrunner. It will form a supportive role in the broader ecosystem,” said Alex Lowes, Vice President, Client Growth—Media Solutions APAC, GroupM Nexus. In fact, FAST may under deliver for advertisers before it hits peak maturity — Alex cautioned that the CPM for advertisements only hits peak efficiency when there is sufficient volume of content and thus traffic. Ed added that young FAST implementations need to invest in partnerships that bring new content.

Moderated by Tom Gennari, CEO, BB Media, one of the most compelling panels on FAST within APAC brought together pillars that make up the FAST ecosystem. 22

STIRRING DRAMA ACROSS ASIA The name of the game for French distributor Mediawan Rights at ATF 2023 is all-out Drama, with a huge push that includes not one, but four new titles, namely The Count of Monte Cristo by Palomar and DEMD Productions, Machine and Drone Games by White Lion Films, and Zorro by Secuoya Studios. Notably, Zorro, a reboot of the original story of Zorro by Secuoya Studios, was produced for Amazon Spain and Latin America and debuted to a highly successful event screening at Mipcom. Fiona Railane, International Sales Manager at Mediawan, is back at ATF this year as part of the French distributor’s strategy for an ‘acrossthe-board presence on all markets’. This leg of the journey focuses on their presence in Asia, where a key part of Mediawan Rights’ arsenal is their varied scripted library line-up, including long-running light-crime procedurals, period dramas, thrillers and more. Another key consideration in Mediawan Rights’ push in Asia is ATF’s standing as the region’s biggest TV market, where Fiona hopes to reconnect with long-time clients and meet new clients for deeper and more numerable collaborations.

When asked about Mediawan Rights’ philosophy for success, Fiona shared that the crux is two-part — the expertise to have an able finger on the pulse of the market and the agility to adapt to that ever-changing pulse.

ON THIS NOTE, THE DISTRIBUTOR HAS RECOGNISED AN INCREASING INTEREST FOR FORMAT RIGHTS IN RECENT YEARS AND HAS STOKED THE BOILERS TO STRENGTHEN EXISTING SCRIPTED FORMAT COLLABORATIONS IN ASIA. A recent partnership with Entourage Ventures leans even further into this refocusing effort and has fueled heavy investments into powerful, high-end IPs and projects.

THE BEST GENRE IS NOT A GENRE

“Which genre is the best?” is a contentious question at best. At worst, it is a call to arms for zealots of a specific genre. Nolan Pielak, SVP of International Distribution at Electric Entertainment, has an answer that he believes in.

“IF YOU BECOME A STRONG PROVIDER OF A PARTICULAR GENRE THAT BUYERS CAN CONSISTENTLY RELY ON, YOUR SALES WILL CONSISTENTLY SUCCEED,” SAYS NOLAN. Ergo, the best genre is not a specific genre, but the genre that you can consistently provide at a high quality. And yet, that doesn’t mean a production company should focus on a single genre to the exclusion of others. Electric Entertainment has not one, but three top dogs. Nolan admits the company’s bias towards the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure, noting that sci-fi fans possess an especially fervent loyalty of all fan-bases — a fact that Nolan deeply appreciates. True to their philosophy of being strong, reliable providers, Electric Entertainment is giving the crowd what it wants with a spinoff of their hit fantasy and adventure series The Librarians, cleverly titled The Librarians: The Next Chapter, an offering we can look forward to at ATF 2023. On the heels of that, we’ve news that season two of the company’s sci-fi series, The Ark, is in the midst of production, but how much of it will be presented this year remains to be seen. Asked about what else Electric Entertainment brings to the table, Nolan offers their full-service mini studio helmed by veteran producer Dean Devlin, where they create hit content for audiences of every age and demographic, with a focus on their three main genres. Nolan also teases a “big announcement coming in early 2024”, something you may hear more of if you can get a hold of him at ATF 2023.

FEATURE AMBASSADORS OF THAI CULTURE

Katana Motion Pictures will be showcasing the rich tapestry of Thai culture with curated content from their library at ATF. Their content of over 200 IPs reflects the diversity, authenticity and uniqueness of Thai experiences, with universal themes that transcend cultural boundaries and resonate with audiences worldwide. Titles buyers can look forward to include Reverse 4 U, a story about a young woman who has the ability to turn back time for only 10 minutes, but must choose between saving her sister’s life or her romantic future. For docudrama buffs, there is Extraordinary Siamese Story: Eng and Chang, a historical series that traces the trials and tribulations of the eponymous Siamese twins who became a global phenomenon in the field of medical science in the 1800s. This title won Best Director in Fiction, Best Cinematography and Best Promo/ Trailer at the Asian Academy Creative Awards, and Best Scriptwriting at the Asian Television Awards. And then there is The Up Rank, an action thriller drama about a group of highly-skilled gamers who find a way to make a quick buck by offering ‘boosting services’, only to find out that there is a price to be paid. In terms of production,

KATANA IS LAUNCHING A NEW VIRTUAL PRODUCTION STUDIO TO THEIR SUITE OF SERVICE OFFERINGS BY THE END OF THIS YEAR TO ENSURE THEY STAY AT THE FOREFRONT OF INDUSTRY TRENDS and continue to offer cuttingedge solutions to clients. Going forward, Katana plans to release more feature films and premium series in the coming year, and is looking forward to forging co-production partnerships at ATF to enhance the creative and commercial success of these projects.

THE WIDE & CONTENT-NUOUS FLOW

No IFs, no BUTs, no coconuts —

WHETHER NEW OR trusty river, a distributor should provide continuous flow of a wide variety of EXISTING, THE ONLY THING acontent to better cater to the changing THAT SHOULD MATTER needs of their clients. ZDF Studios is certainly no slouch in this department — TO A DISTRIBUTOR IS the studio offers an internationally eclectic THE MARK OF GREATNESS selection of programs from countries like Germany, South Africa, and the UK. THAT AN IP HAS. That is the yardstick by which ZDF Studios chooses their projects, according to Yuliya Fischer, Director of Drama of the German distributor. More specifically, ZDF Studios has a strong focus on genres like crime, thriller, and investigation, with a proven track record in Bron (Swedish) or Broen (Danish), a Nordic crime thriller series that ran for almost 40 episodes and sold to over 180 countries across the globe. In parallel with such discerning selection, Yuliya further espouses the importance of being a reliable partner. Much like a broad and

Joyce Dröese Sales Manager Red Arrow Studios

Not resting on their laurels, the studio has two big-name series in their 2023 line-up. One of the two is Boundless, a Spanish historical drama series directed by Simon West, director of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and producer of Oscar-nominated Black Hawk Down. Boundless stars big names Rodrigo Santoro of 300 and Love Actually fame, as well as Álvaro Morte from Netflix’s hit series, Money Heist. Legacy, the second title, is a South African drama series that may not have Boundless’ big-name cast, but has seen great success in its run of over 400 episodes and two seasons.

CUPID’S RED ARROW OR RED ARROW’S CUPID? A man and a woman, matched by experts, are joined in an intimate ceremony — a promising start to a great romance, surely? “No,” says Red Arrow Studios, as it dumps the newlyjoined couple on a deserted island to fend for themselves for our collective entertainment. Such is the premise of Stranded on Honeymoon Island, Red Arrow Studio’s flagship offering at ATF 2023, an adventure reality format created by the same people behind the world’s number one relationship format, Married at First Sight. Joyce Dröese, Sales Manager at the German studio, has confidence in the success of the offering, noting that it was chosen to resonate with an Asian base. However, Red Arrow Studios doesn’t just pander to mainstream, light-hearted content. Joyce shares, with a fair amount of pride, that the studio is bringing Those Who Stayed, a drama anthology series that covers the first brutal weeks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She emphasizes the need to make space for such important and inspiring projects that will strike a chord with people everywhere.

26

Yuliya Fischer Director of Drama ZDF Studios

On the scripted front, Joyce shares that the distributor has high expectations of two of their scripted format offerings this year, namely, The Gone, a mystery drama starring Richard Flood from Grey’s Anatomy and Michelle Fairley from Game of Thrones, and Plan B, a high-concept psychological drama starring Patrick J. Adams from Suits. Asked about the market changes and challenges amid the Covid-19 pandemic,

JOYCE ESPOUSES THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD PARTNERS WHO CONTINUE TO BUY CONTENT IN DIFFICULT TIMES and still offer a diversified catalogue, as well as a platform like ATF, where recovery can be sped up with the aggregation of industry partners and enhanced cross-regional interaction.

A DARING DEBUT AND HIGH ASPIRATIONS Andreas Rothbauer, Founder and Co-Managing Director of Picture Tree International, is taking one big step for his company as they make their ATF debut, armed with an impressive toolbox of offerings.

Andreas also notes that due to ATF’s focus as a TV-oriented market, they would expect better performance out of their TV series and movies with platforms and TV acquisitions than their theatrical feature film line-up.

Andreas shares that in collaboration with Bavaria Media, another German industry player, Picture Tree International would be bringing over 20,000 hours of European programming to the shores of Asia.

AMONG THE OFFERINGS IN THE CONSIDERABLE LIBRARY, ANDREAS BELIEVES THAT THE GENRES OF CRIME, COMEDY, ACTION, AND THRILLER WILL RESONATE PARTICULARLY WELL IN ASIA.

Qi Wang International Sales Manager Beta Film

Andreas Rothbauer Founder and Co-Managing Director Picture Tree International

CURRENT CULTURE AND RIVETING RELEVANCE Only the most reclusive hermit could deny that the world right now is in a rather turbulent state. From war being fought a continent away to surveillance technology overreach right on our doorstep, these are but a few of the many issues at the forefront of our minds — issues that yearn for resolution in storytelling. Qi Wang, International Sales Manager at Beta Film, identifies this dynamic, sharing that they “prioritise content that reflects cultural nuances and addresses current trends”. Indeed, this is evident in their selection of content at ATF 2023, with three key titles. Elsa Morante’s La Storia, an eight-episode period drama, paints a tragic picture of the human side of war through the eyes of civilians caught in the crossfire in World War II Italy. On the other end of the timeline, Concordia, a socialtechnological thriller, depicts a utopian society that plays out the all-too-familiar struggle of personal privacy against public security and order. The last offering may be a more diversionary one, but still arguably important in an era of turmoil. The Couple Next Door, an eight-hour series, is a dark psychological drama about the claustrophobia of suburbia and the pursuit of human desire that promises to take your mind off reality, even if for just the brief period of an episode.

28

Differing expectations notwithstanding, Andreas sees ATF 2023 as a promising beginning for Picture Tree International in expanding into more TV-oriented content — without neglecting their profile as a feature film provider — and growing their Asian buyer network with a well-balanced profile.

Qi Wang hopes that this set of offerings, among others, provides fresh and compelling narratives that resonate even with an Asian audience.

WHILE BETA FILM HAS SEEN POSITIVE GROWTH IN ASIA THIS YEAR, QI WANG NOTES THAT HIS TEAM IS STILL KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON PERFORMANCE METRICS LIKE VIEWERSHIP RATINGS AND CRITICAL RECEPTION, AS WELL AS BROADER INDICATORS LIKE PARTNERSHIPS ESTABLISHED IN THIS MARKET. Qi Wang also shares that ATF 2023 is a unique opportunity to engage players in Asia, as well as exchange ideas and connect with other industry leaders in the region.

BIG NAMES MATTER

One of the hallmarks of a successful series is the production of sequel seasons. Harry Wild and Creepshow, currently in their 2nd and 4th seasons respectively, are testimony to Dynamic Television’s ability to create successful productions that have long shelf life. Harry Wild is a murder mystery series starring acclaimed actress Jane Seymour. The show’s success lies in its high quality, feel-good element and broad audience appeal. Creepshow is a horror anthology series based on the beloved 80s horror IP. The established IP, horror genre, and stellar talent–Greg Nicotero, Stephen King, Giancarlo Esposito– has made this title a runaway hit. A newer IP is the suspenseful crime thriller Savage River. Starring Katherine Langford and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, this series is built on character-driven storylines and top-tier production quality. Gilda Dermirtas SVP International Sales Dynamic Television

Gilda Dermirtas, SVP International Sales, explains, “Our expertise is developing stories with talented creators and producers that are unique and organic to a local market, yet relatable to global audiences.” This year at ATF, Dynamic Television aims to connect with linear and VOD buyers seeking premium content. They will showcase new series currently in post-production and market their completed premium series and movies. Additionally, they will be keeping an eye out for international collaborations opportunities for new projects. On the company’s strategy, Gilda notes, “In recent years, we’ve strategically included internally renowned cast members in our series to augment their global appeal.

WE’VE ALSO EXPANDED OUR INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTION TO ASIA. Notably, our Japanese-French-US coproduction, Drops of God, has been a great success on AppleTV+ and Hulu Japan.”

SPARKING CONVERSATIONS AND LEADING CHANGE “We don’t just create content; we create conversations,” says Sheetal Mehra, Senior Vice-President, IB, Syndication and FAST TV at Indiacast Media. What does that mean in the television and media industry? To Sheetal, the answer comes in two parts — understanding what conversations the audience demands and the best way to bring that conversation to them. She shares to make this simple goal a reality, a lot more happens behind the scenes than most expect. Indiacast Media has teams with cumulative experience of decades in the global content industry and a robust and responsive feedback loop with the target audience that allows them to hone their understanding of what conversations to have. The result is inspiring — Doree is the story of an Indian girl, abandoned at birth solely by virtue of her gender and adopted by a handicapped man who weaves sarees. The story progresses as the titular protagonist challenges the privileged, patriarchal establishment — strongly mirroring the reality in present-day India — ironically led by a subconsciously self-loathing fellow female, and questions India’s societal norms through the brutally frank eyes of a naive child. Sheetal emphasized that shows like Doree are not just about entertainment, but about leaving a lasting impact on viewers as well.

Yet, such inspiring content would avail nothing if it reached no one.

SHEETAL SHARES THAT EVOLVING MARKET DYNAMICS AND AUDIENCE PREFERENCES ARE A LARGE PART OF THE CHALLENGE IN ESTABLISHING REACH. Noting an increasing demand for fantasy, fiction, and animation shows has spurred Indiacast Media to focus more resources on the following genres, as well as secondary modes of delivery like FAST channels and digital content distribution platforms. According to Sheetal, one of Indiacast Media’s parent companies, Viacom18, has shown great commitment to this route by investing heavily in distribution through JioCinema and Desi Play TV. As part of furthering Indiacast Media’s reach, Sheetal shares that she looks forward to showcasing their offerings and building partnerships at ATF 2023. Personally, she hopes to learn more about recent industry trends and glean valuable insights from panel discussions to enhance their content strategy and business decisions.

OPENED BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN ASIA BOTH WITH LOCAL PLAYERS, AS WELL AS VIA FRESH AGREEMENTS WITH OPERATORS IN COUNTRIES SUCH AS JAPAN AND CHINA, among others. Hollywood (Thailand), helmed by CEO Watson Homsangpradit, is bringing an entire toolbox of offerings to ATF 2023.

WHETHER SUPERNATURAL HORROR, RIVETING DOCUMENTARY, EXPLOSIVE ACTION, OR SILLY YOUNG ROMANCE, THE ASIAN ENTERTAINMENT AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANY IS BOUND TO HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. However, the biggest and baddest wrench in Watson’s toolbox is most definitely their horror lineup. Their offering includes not one, but four horror movies. First but not foremost, The Elite of Devils spins an entangling weave of a loss of faith in divinity and ensnarement by evil. Next, we are faced with the classic case of a haunted house in Home Sweet Hell, just in the setting of traditional Thai architecture. The third film, The Snake Queen, is a creaturefeature of sorts, where a woman, plagued by a Medusa-esque curse that can turn people to stone, falls in love with a lonely man and endures a series of hardships from her interactions with humanity. Last but not least, Nednaree tells the tale of seven teenage boy scouts lost in a forest. Their predicament is made horrifically worse when karma for a past, grievous misdeed comes seeking payment with deadly consequences for the boys. If horror turns your stomach, you’d be glad to move on to Hollywood (Thailand)’s documentary offering, 5th Round. In this feature-length film, we follow four generations of boxers who quite literally fight their way out of poverty in their journey as professional Muay Thai fighters. Along the same vein of action, Pattaya Heat is a high-budget, star-studded film that shut down part of Pattaya City for filming — a sure sign of the dedication to production here. To end off with something sweet, Hollywood (Thailand) also offers a Boy-Love romance series called Heroin the Series, a Thai adaptation of the highly successful Chinese Boy-Love series, Addicted. With this arsenal, Watson looks to draw new partnerships at ATF 2023 and spread Thai content to the rest of the world.

SPECIAL SOAKING UP THE ESSENTIALS OF ALL THINGS JAPANESE At the Market

This year, the JAPAN PAVILION stands poised once more at ATF, bringing together 23 content holders, including broadcasters from all over Japan. The beautifully designed marquee is operated by the International Drama Festival in Tokyo (IDFT), who joined forces with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, to support the promotion of Japanese content in this charming “all-Japan” structure. Toru Ota—the Executive Vice President of Fuji Television Network, Inc—who vice-chairs the Overseas Content Development Committee of the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA), which plays a leading role in the IDFT, expressed his enthusiasm in being a significant part of ATF again. “We are delighted to have the Japan Pavilion in Singapore again this year,” enthused Toru. “ATF 2023 will experience the latest Japanese dramas (complete packages and remakes), variety formats, animation, documentaries, and a wide variety of content. As well, with the number of tourists visiting Japan rapidly on the rise, it is apt that we also offer programmes that introduces the attractions and culture of local areas in Japan. We look forward to welcoming you all.”

At the Conference

As the Chair of the Operation Committee of the Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ), Toru is passionate about implementing various measures to actively advocate the overseas expansion of Japanese broadcasters.

“As part of these measures, a promotional event called, ‘DRAMA GEMS FROM JAPAN’ will be held on the first day of ATF, on December 6 @ 4pm on the Main Stage (Level 4). The session will introduce the latest Japanese drama productions, with the BEAJ’s senior advisor, Mathieu Bejot, sitting to moderate. Mathieu will introduce 10 enchanting productions across various themes, and we do look forward to seeing you there,” Toru vaunted.

At Lunch

The NETWORKING LUNCH, which connects overseas buyers with exhibitors from Japan, will also see a return, magnifying opportunities and deepening exchanges. This by-invitation-only event will see BEAJ’s Mathieu Bejot introduce various genres of Japanese works.

@ Online

The Japan Program Catalog (JPC), an online programme catalogue operated by BEAJ, brings together broadcast programmes across various genres, and presented by more than 60 licensors from all over Japan. The platform enables direct contact with licensors. For those interested in Japanese productions, the site can be a strategic tool. JPC will have a booth (B23) at the Market to introduce the JPC website and help you register as a user. Registering on the spot will also get you a gift! “Last year, we exhibited at ATF for the first time in three years, once again communicating directly with everyone. During the show days, the Japan Pavilion was inundated with visitors, and we were able to convey our passion and enthusiasm for content, while experiencing first-hand the strong interest in Japanese content. This really drove home the appreciation of communication in person,” observed Toru. “Asia remains a familiar and highly interesting area for Japanese content holders. At this year’s ATF, we will continue to meet with business partners from all over the world, particularly in Asia, and to introduce you to the diverse range of Japanese content,” Toru concluded with much anticipation.”

Toru Ota Executive Vice President, Fuji Television Network, Inc. THE SECRET SAUCE TO GLOBAL SUCCESS— STAYING TRADITIONAL What’s the secret to success in an industry as transient as the media? Staying traditional – but thinking global. “The most important thing is to actually take a local project from anywhere in the world and make it global,” explained Izzet Pinto, Founder & CEO of Global Agency. “Even if you don’t own the project, but you make it a global success, that’s a global business as well,” he said of their secret sauce. The Istanbul-based TV content distribution company’s biggest title to date has been Magnificent Century, a period drama set during the Ottoman Empire, which helped the agency to grow. But it’s their second biggest title, Turkish soap opera 1001 Nights, “which made us the pioneer in selling Turkish dramas abroad”, revealed Izzet. “1001 Nights opened the gateway to Turkish dramas.” In fact, although the series is 15 years old, it’s still selling well. The biggest buyers for Turkish drama have been Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Izzet Pinto Founder & CEO Global Agency

When it comes to formats, one of their top hits has been Keep Your Light Shining, an original singing competition developed by Izzet. The format has been produced in 10 territories, including China and Thailand. And creating formats is what Global Agency will be expanding on in the future. “Formats have always been the priority for Global Agency,” said Izzet, as he recounted that the company started with formats since its inception 17 years ago, before moving on to dramas. “My dream is to have a format which will be produced in 30 plus countries,” shared Izzet on his ambition of creating a worldwide hit. “Personally, I have created 12 formats and 8 of them have been on air.” Developing a format requires at least 8 to 10 months. And even after that, once a show has been taken to market, it usually takes 1 to 2 years to be on air. “It’s a big investment, but I think if you really want to sell, you have to invest in it,” shared Izzet. Global Agency has been mostly focused on Turkish and European projects in the past few years, but they will now be focusing on Asia as well. “We want a bigger range for our portfolio,” Izzet explained.
