ASHBY ARTS FESTIVAL

Ashby Arts Festival

A Week of Art and Performance for All!

Ashby Arts Festival is a community run event which takes place each year in the May half term week. It has been around now for over 12 years and is most well known for its giant outdoor gallery with up to 40 huge 8×4 foot artworks displayed on buildings, businesses and schools around the town centre. This year the theme is “All the World’s a Stage” and includes a Children’s section with a series of 4 foot square boards on display in Huntingdon Court. Our ‘Art about Town’ map guides you around them all. We have an amazing 7 galleries open across the town over the Bank Holiday Weekend. These include painting, prints, sculpture, textiles, solo and club exhibitions as well as the main Festival Galleries at Ivanhoe College which host our annual Art and Photography Exhibitions and our “Art Cafe” where you can see artists at work and even create some art of your own. This year you will also have the opportunity to see our Interactive Heritage Rag Rug and add your own response to the work.

The full festival programme also includes a wide variety of theatre, film, music and workshops for all ages including, for the first time in Ashby, a concert by Gresley Male Voice Choir – don’t miss the chance to hear this local choir with an international reputation! With so much to choose from, you are sure to find plenty of interest over this lively week! See www.ashbyarts festival.co.uk or Ashby Tourist Information Office for full programme details and trail maps. You can follow us on Facebook or on Twitter @AshbyArtsFest

ASHBY PROJECT MANAGER

Ashby Project Manager Most of us have heard something about the Ashby neighbourhood plan and talk of development and regeneration in various areas of town but here at Ashby Life we were keen to find out more. This month we met up with the new Ashby Project Manager; Jo Holland who has bravely taken on the job of co-ordinating the various stakeholder groups and working to transform all of their ideas and plans into reality. Jo is far from daunted by the task ahead and is keen to engage with the local community and immerse herself in all things Ashby to ensure she does the plan justice. Joining the Town Council earlier this year Jo’s role as Ashby Project Manager covers a number of defined projects with the over-riding aim of tying them in to the Neighbourhood plan Ashby’s Cultural & Leisure Quarter This covers the area of North Street encompassing Hood Park leisure centre, the museum, library and of course, Venture Theatre. The first action to be taken in this area will be the demolition of the old Health Centre and the addition of a much needed new car park. Plans for this area are still under discussion but are focused on how to make the area not only look better but also how to produce a multi-purpose space the whole town can enjoy. Ashby’s Heritage Quarter With the first stakeholder meeting for this group taking place in April it’s early days yet but the main aims for this quarter involve a recognition of the many fantastic attractions we already have in Ashby such h as the Casttle and the Bath Grounds and how we can make the most of them for both residents

16

Jo Holland Ashby Project Manager and visitors as well as working alongside new developments such as the Heritage Centre under construction at St Helens. Ashby’s Business Quarter Represented by the many businesses based in and around Market Street this group has it’s eye on ways to boost the local economy, how to increase footfall to the town centre and attract local visitors. Our position at the heart of the National Forest will be integral to what makes Ashby unique. As you can see there’s lots going on. The overall project will be working to an 18month timescale but as each group develops their ideas and plans we will share progress with you at regular intervals and celebrate the achievements made along the way. Jo Holland can be contacted at Legion House, South Street, Ashby de la Zouch or via email: joholland@ ashb byttowncouncil.org.uk if you have any commentts or suggestions you’d like to discuss with her.

Tree work

The branch system of a tree is known as the crown. Knowing this little fact can help you accurately explain the work you want carried out to a tree. Tree thinning reduces the density of the branches. Thinning the crown of a tree reduces the amount of foliage and lets more light into the canopy of the tree. Often crossing or rubbing branches, which can cause weakness, are removed to ensure long term health. Crown lifting refers to removing the lower branches to increase the clearance from the crown and the ground. Lifting the crown can make it easier to maintain the ground around a tree, or cut the grass for example. A crown reduction generally means changes to the overall size and shape of the tree. Reductions are usually around the outer part to maintain a balanced shape, this rarely means cutting through the main stem. A partial crown reduction may be

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk useful to prevent branches touching roofs or the guttering of buildings. The terms above are useful for describing the tree work you want to carry out when applying to the Local Authority for permission. If you have a tree which has a Tree Preservation Order on it, or you are in a Conservation area, you have to apply for permission to do any tree work or to remove a tree. Note that if your trees are in a Conservation Area, you have to give notice for tree works if the trunk of the tree is more than 75mm when measured 1.5meters from the ground. Terms such as ‘’lop’’, ‘’trim ‘’ or ‘’cut back’’ are not sufficiently descriptive. As well as using the correct terminology such as crown thinning, it is usually necessary to give an indication of how much thinning is required by specifying a percentage, such as ‘no more than 30%’. If you are planning tree work then you will have to download an application form from the Local Authority and they will have 6 weeks to object to your proposals. This means that trees with amenity value and the local environment can be protected. Local tree surgeons and some garden designers can deal with applications for such work if you daunted by the prospect. If you are not sure if there is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) then you can check with the Local Planning Department, as indeed you can also confirm whether the tree is in a Conservation Area. Happy gardening!

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

De-clutter

Don’t you feel so much better after having a good spring ‘clear out’! That feeling that comes with filling yet another charity bag or seeing the box of junk that once cluttered up the garage heading for the car boot, or tip. But along with that ‘lighter feeling’ comes the very practical benefits – it might be having a bit more space or perhaps finding something important that had become hidden below the layers of ‘stuff’ that life had somehow piled up. It always amazes me how much we hang on to with a peculiar notion of ‘we might just need that’! It has been said that we seem to spend the first half of our life filling it with things, and the second half trying to negotiate our way around it. Maybe you are one of those people who seem to be always in the ‘filling it phase’ and wonder if you will ever find the time to stop and sort things out?

26

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Well it can be a bit like that with our spiritual life. Taking time to appreciate what life is really all about might be buried under a thousand and one things that we have somehow managed to acquire and keep. Any time for a relationship with God squeezed out by a random mix of distractions collected along life’s journey. It’s easily done. Why not have a spiritual life de-clutter? Fill a box of the things that might be getting in the way of connecting with God. Give him a bit of space in your life and see what’s possible with Him involved. He could just be the most valuable thing that’s been lost under life’s clutter. HOUSING

Home Improvement Tips Whether you are selling now or maintaining your home to sell in the future, there are many small improvements you can address to keep your property in best shape for when the time comes to sell-up, without stretching your budget. Local estate agents; John German have used their years of expertise to provide us with some simple home improvement tips for under £500…. 1. Mirrors to create the illusion of natural light There’s no need to install skylights or build a conservatory to brighten up your home, be cost-effective by hanging mirrors opposite windows to trick the eye into thinking there is another window and giving the illusion of natural light. Another illusion when capturing light is to reflect it into any darker corners, to make your property look bigger and brighter. 2. A pristine and private garden will add appeal Sprucing up your garden can go a long way. There’s no need for a large budget to achieve this. Start by tidying away any litter, mowing your lawn, removing all perennial weeds and cutting back overgrown trees and shrubs. Once you have made the space look attractive, try and create a feeling of solitude. An open, clutter-free space is appealing but privacy is essential. Consider growing trees or assembling a structure in the space such as a pergola. As well as creating privacy, this is a great way to separate areas of your garden for socialising and to extend the use of your garden into the colder months. You could also consider putting up a fence or building a wall around the boundary, anything below 2metres will not require planning permission. 3. Get rid of busy wallpaper so your buyer won’t have to With each potential house buyer having 30

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

varied tastes in patterns and texture, certain wallpaper designs can be seen as overwhelming. Wallpaper can also be difficult to remove which could lead to people being put off by if they are looking for a home to move straight into. We recommend using paint and keeping colours neutral, making it a simpler job for the next homeowner and the property overall becomes more appealing. 4. Replace doors to make the right first impression First impressions count. The front door of your home can say a lot about the rest of the house to viewers seeing it for the first time. If you cannot afford to replace the door, make sure it looks attractive by giving it a power wash or a fresh lick of paint. 5. Make your home energy efficient Making your home more energy efficient will not only help to reduce your current household bills, but it can also help when marketing your property to potential buyers. If you do decide to sell, it is a legal requirement to have an Energy Performance Certificate, so buyers are aware of the running cost of the home. LEGAL TIPS

Lasting Powers of Attorney

The most important document you don’t know about This month we welcome back Felicity, Barrister Intermediary at The Profit Key here in Ashby. Felicity shares some invaluable legal advice on the importance of planning to protect your loved ones when they need it the most. When people think about ‘loss of capacity’ they think of dementia and ageing but loss of capacity simply means being unable to make decisions anymore, which can happen just as easily from an accident or serious illness. As a result, it’s something that should be taken seriously by people of all ages. Lasting Powers of Attorney come in two parts: health and financial. They are documents you register before anything happens so that people you trust can take over making decisions on your behalf immediately. Without this, your loved ones

38

would have to apply for a Deputyship Order which can take between 9-12 months and cost up to around £2,000. Until it was granted they wouldn’t be able to make any decisions, bank accounts are often frozen (even joint accounts) and a Court Deputy will be in charge. If you have a business it’s especially worth noting that your business account may be frozen and there could be major disruption caused by decisions being unable to be made on your behalf. Contact Felicity and the team at The Profit Key for a free review of your personal or business planning. Simply call 01530 416 555, visit www.theprofitkey.co.uk or see their full advert on pages 20 & 21.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Ashby Scouts 40th Birthday Reunion With over 150 members, and 50 youngsters on the waiting list, the 4th Ashby Scouts group is currently the biggest and most popular it’s ever been. This year they are celebrating their 40th birthday and we take a look at their many achievements.

In the last forty years they have camped out for well over 2,000 nights and welcomed more than 1,000 members. As well as travelling around all corners of the UK, members have represented the group across the world in countries such as Thailand, Sweden and Japan. 30 years since it was originally set up, the Ashby Scout Group Christmas Post is still running strong and each year local residents have their Christmas cards delivered across Ashby, Shellbrook, Smisby and Packington by Beaver, Cub and Scout elves. Following 40 years of fun and friendship, they are holding a 40th Birthday Dinner on Friday 19th May!

The celebration will include a three course meal, drink on arrival and entertainment at The Lyric Rooms in Ashby.

Adult members, leaders and supporters of the group past and present are invited along with guests travelling from as far away as Barbados. Tickets cost £25 per person.

If you would like to book a ticket or simply find out more then call Jon Bloor on 07588 869882 or Sharon Kaye on 07525 047725 or email info@4thashby.org.uk

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Bradgate Park

and Old John

Th he perfect spot for a day out - tthis walk takes around an ho our and a half but you could easily extend that to a whole day out. Bradgate Park has a pretty p stream, deer roaming frree, picniic spots and some g great landmaarks - perfect for a family outing and with the car parkk costing ti just j t £3 for the day it won n’t break the bank either. The park is a popular spot so expect it to be busy, especially at weekend ds. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the lower sections of the park and you may encounter deer at any po oint in the park. If you want refreshments there are e tea rooms by the car park, in the village and also close to the ruins.

1

Our walk starts from the e Newtown Linford entrance to Bradgate Park, which is about 20 minutes drive from Ashby in the Leicester direction. The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE6 0HB.

2

Don’t leave the car park by the maain gate, instead turn left and follow the fence around for about 100 yds to a smaller, wooden gate e (1). Pass through this gate and then another one e immediately after it. Take the stoney path, maarked as a horse track, and follow it through a gap fo in n the wall after wh hich it sp plits. Keep lefft and ontinue co e on the horse track as it goes around th he outer edge of the paark with the park wall vissible off to your left. Aftter a while you will see ag gate in the wall leading o out of the park off to your left and, at the same time, on your

right there is a hill with a coppice on top - continue on the horse track and soon you will be able to see the Yeomanry War Memorial (2) on the top of the next hill on your right. When you can see it bear right and walk steeply uphill to reach the memorial (take any track you like, there are a few). After viewing the memorial continue in the e same direction, going down the hill and through h h a smallll gap p in a stone wall (3). Follow w the short path through trees and d a stone archway and then climb the slope e to reach Old John (4)) where e you can enjoy some won nderful views.

4

Still continuing in roughly the same direction, take the wide grassyy path down the far side of the hilll after Old John n then, as you come to the rocks on your right near the bottom, bear right onto a tracck which will quickly join a hard path. Almost as soo on as you join this path you need to bear right off it onto a sm maller grass track which clearly leads around the left of a large coppice in the distance. In th he bottom of the dip you will pass a National Fo orest Way marker post - follow the arrow and paass the coppice with the stone wall on your right. Yo ou should now be able to see the ruins of Bradgate House (5) ahead of you. Pass by a wide gap in a stone wall and then, on reaching the ruins, turn right along the main tarmac drive that runs through the park. As you follow the drive backk to the car park (about ¾ mile) the pretty River Lin runs off to your left and you may well see deer grazing either on the banks. All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BOOK REVIEWS

Relationships This month’s books are all about relationships, from first loves and families, to fleeting friendships.

Lucky Boy Shanthi Sekaran Mexican Solimar risks everything to start a new life in America. But as an illegal immigrant she has few rights. When she’s thrown into a detention centre, her son is placed in foster care. Kavya is an American-Indian chef desperate for a child. When she’s given Solimar’s toddler to care for it seems like a dream come true. One boy – two mothers, both of whom will do everything in their power in order to keep him. An emotional rollercoaster of a read, this looks set to become one of this year’s bestsellers. The Lonely Hearts Hotel Heather O’Neill Pierrot and Rose grow up together in a Montreal orphanage. They bond over a shared love of entertaining people, but go their separate ways as teenagers. Years later they’re reunited, and set out to realise their childhood dream of running their own stage show. Their path isn’t an easy one, however. They both have demons to face, and Rose’s wants her dead. A highly entertaining read, with beautiful, lyrical prose and characters you’ll be rooting for from the beginning. My Sweet Revenge Jane Fallon When Paula finds out her husband is having an affair, she decides to win him back – so that she can be the one who breaks the marriage up. She befriends his mistress, Saskia, and sets out on a mission to lose weight, get fit and become the woman he wants. Paula recruits Saskia’s husband, Josh, to help her endeavour and together they set out to make the cheaters’ lives a misery. An easy read that’s perfect for lazy sunny afternoons.

52

A Big Dose of Lucky (Secrets) Marthe Jocelyn When the Canadian orphanage they live in burns down in 1964, seven teenage girls set out into the world to discover the secrets of their past. Seven authors have each chosen one girl’s story to write. The result is the Secrets series. In A Big Dose of Lucky, Malou heads to a small town in Ontario, hoping to find her birth parents. Malou is mixed race, shy and desperate to fit in. The truth of her birth may give her the family she craves, even if it’s not the one she imagined. An enjoyable read that will leave you eager to read the rest of the series. A Gentleman in Moscow Amor Towles The gentleman of the title is Count Alexander Rostov. Following the Russian Revolution, the Count is sentenced to house (or in this case, hotel) arrest, indefinitely. He’s given work as a waiter in the hotel restaurant, and forges close friendships with some of the other inhabitants. While his view is mainly confined to what he can see out of his tiny window, Rostov is able to observe and ruminate on a tumultuous Russia over the course of four decades. You’ll savour every word. See You in the Cosmos Jack Cheng 11 year old Alex loves everything to do with space. So he builds a rocket and sets off for a rocket festival in Mexico. His plan is to launch his rocket into space, attached to an iPod on which Alex is recording his thoughts and feelings about his family and the people he meets on his journey. While it’s been catalogued as a children’s book, See You in the Cosmos definitely has crossover appeal. Fresh, imaginative and full of energy, this is perfect for fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

BEAUTY TIPS with our resident beauty expert, Emma from Rose Beauty! Eyes are said to be the window to the soul but what do your eyes say about you? Eye products are the third most important skincare purchase when it comes to beauty regime. So why do we need to look after them differently?

• The skin is so delicate around the eyes; it is only

0.5mm thin! This makes it incredibly fragile, easily sensitised and damaged. So be careful with your eyes gently pat around the area with the ring finger.

• There are 22 muscles around the eye. • Eyes are the first place you see signs of stress and •

geing g even as earlyy as your 20’s. ag

Eyes experience constant daylight exposure to UV so are prone to sun damage. Choose an eye cream with an SPF and don’t forget those sunglasses!

• We blink an incredible 28,000 times a day. WOW! • The skin around the eyes doesn’t have as many

sebaceous glands so skin is more prone to dehydration which causes age concerns to show more. Be careful not to use more eye product than recommended as overloading the skin in this area can lead to puffiness.

• Our eyyes are busyy, as we experience reppetitive

mechanical stressors when smiling, frowning, during make up application and removal and also during sleep!

MONEY MATTERS

New Flat Rate Scheme

does this affect YOU?

In last year’s Autumn Statement, HM Revenue and Customs (‘HMRC’) announced it would be making changes to the Flat Rate Scheme (‘FRS’), which came into effect from 1 April 2017. The FRS was introduced as a ‘simplification measure for small businesses’, calling it the ‘limited cost trader’. This simplification measure however is far from being simple to understand for small businesses. So – are you classed as a ‘limited cost trader’? A ‘limited cost’ business is one which spends the following on relevant goods (those goods used exclusively for business purposes, subject to a number of specific exemptions): • less than 2% of its VAT flat rate turnover; or • greater than 2% of its VAT flat rate turnover, but less than £1,000 per year.

If you fall into the definition of ‘limited cost’ business irrespective of your business type, your FRS percentage will be fixed at 16.5%. Depending on your current FRS percentage this may mean you will shortly incur additional VAT costs If, your business is ‘caught’ by these new provisions you should consider whether the FRS remains appropriate and where turnover is below the VAT registration threshold it may also be appropriate to consider VAT de-registration. We can assist you in determining whether your business falls into the new limited cost trader category, and whether it is the correct scheme for your business to be using. If you are confused by whether you are likely to be classed as a ‘limited cost trader’ contact Baldwins to see how we can help you through this uncertainty. Please call Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or via email at Lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk

NOT JUST GOOD WITH NUMBERS

NEW FLAT RATE SCHEME - DOES THIS AFFECT YOU? In the Autumn Statement, The Chancellor announced that a new Flat Rate Scheme category would become effective from April 2017, called the ‘limited cost trader’. A business is a ‘limited cost trader’ if its VAT inclusive expenditure on goods is: • Less than 2% of their VAT inclusive turnover in a prescribed accounting period; or • Greater than 2% of their VAT inclusive turnover but less than £1000 per annum if the prescribed accounting period is one year (if it is not one year, the figure is the relevant proportion of £1000).

This change will affect many businesses. Should you wish to discuss how this VAT change will affect your business, please contact Lisa Emery on 01530 416688

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

10 things to do today

for more fat loss!

Hello, and welcome to this month’s blog, written by Fitness Republic’s Ben, we start to explore some golden rules on how to kick start your fat loss journey. If you implement some of the principles in this article, I am certain you will start achieving more progress quicker than you ever thought possible!

2. Start training each body part twice per week

Now, let’s get to the list:

3. Start measuring your progress weekly

1. Start tracking your food intake

This is the first step you should take, whether you want to lose weight or increase your muscle mass. Everybody has a baseline amount of calories they need to consume in order to maintain the weight they are, this is called your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). If you want to lose weight you need to eat a little less calories than your TDEE and if you want to increase muscle mass you need to eat a little more than your TDEE. If you don’t track your intake you will not know whether you’re in a calorie deficit or calorie surplus. This practice simp plyy forces you to re-evaluate your eating g habits and dietary choices, and perhaps be aware of the circumstances and mood that surround your eating behaviour.

70

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Resistance training should be the foundation of any fitness program. If your goal is to lose fat then training with weights will help you maintain muscle and burn calories, if you want to build size weight training will increase your lean muscle mass. You can easily hit all the muscle groups twice a week with a compound weight training program.

Regular monitoring keeps you focused on your goal. The only way to know if you’re making progress is to monitor the changes in your body. So you could take photos, body measurements and body fat percentage.

4. Start using a note pad in the gym to record your weights, sets, reps etc

By tracking your exercise sessions, you will have evidence of your progress, helping to keep you motivated. You can also clearly see which areas you are struggling with, and those you need to focus on.

5. Now you are tracking your progress. If your progress stalls, make a change

It’s inevitable that your progress will stall from time to time, and a change will need to be made. Having a record of your training sessions and food intake will make it easy to see where those changes need to be made.

6. If your goals are fat loss and progress stalls

Decrease calories and or increase expenditure. You could add 10 minutes HIIT training to the end of your session to help you past the plateau.

7. If your goals are muscle growth and your progress stalls Simply increase calories, and or your training volume.

8. Consume sufficient protein

Increasing protein intake will increase your metabolism and help to maintain your muscle

mass, all of which helps with fat-burning. In fact, your body burns more calories when you eat protein than when you digest either fats or carbohydrates!

9. Consume a wide variety of foods to meet your calorie and macro nutrient targets

We need a variety of food to maintain a healthy body and give us the energy we need to exercise. Don’t be afraid to eat fats and carbs they are an essential part of a healthy diet and without consuming all 3 macronutrients (Protein, Fats, and carbohydrates) you will struggle to hit your goals.

10. Take ACTION NOW! The most important thing you can do is take action now, make a commitment to yourself and make a start, once you get going you will gain momentum!

AMTG NEWS

Time for rest and recuperation! After the triumphant week with Oliver!, AMTG are in full rest mode – and already planning events for our next season! We will be bringing the wonderful “My Fair Lady” back to the local stage for the first time in years, from 10-14th April 2018 and, as always, will be looking for new members to join us. AMTG is unusual for an amateur group in more ways than one. First of all we are proud of our determination to bring young talent to the stage – we had an enormous influx of children for Oliver! and are hoping a good number will stay with us. We often hear the comment; “there are no parts for children in that show”. Our response is that musical theatre depicts real life and where in real life would you have a story with no young people? There is always a need for young people in our productions and we love having them with us. Secondly we are very grateful to our musicians – most societies meet their orchestra a day before the dress rehearsal. At AMTG we have a number

Saturday 20th May 9am til 1.30pm 74

of “resident” musicians who come to most rehearsals during our production period, and they are very much part of our team. Our musicians dedicate so much time to our productions and concert performances. We are very lucky and privileged to have them. Get in touch at enquiries@amtg.org.uk if you want to see what we do and how we do it! It doesn’t have to be as an actor, there are many roles offstage, and you won’t find a better way of spending your free time than with us!

ON THE BEAT

a message to the local community This month, is a message to the local community of Ashby, from Inspector Helena Bhakta, Commander for North West Leicestershire Neighbourhood Policing Area. “The tragic events that took place in on Thursday 9th March on Holland Crescent, Ashby, understandably caused a real sense of shock, disbelief and anxiety in the town. Ashby is a quiet, peaceful market town. The news that a man had died and a woman had been seriously injured in a bungalow in the street shook that sense of peacefulness to the core. Extensive enquiries continue to be made into these events, but it may be some time yet before we can be certain of precisely what happened in that house. Whatever did happen, it is a tragedy for all those immediately involved, not least for the little girl who was in the house at the time. She, and the relatives of the couple involved, continue to receive all the support we can possibly give them at this awful time.

Inspector Helena Bhakta Commander for North West Leicestershire Neighbourhood Policing Area

The whole town – and especially those living in the street, have been left shocked by this incident. I’ve spoken to many people in Ashby over the last few days, and their sense of disbelief has been plain to see. But whilst we support one another, and particularly those involved and their families, we must not lose confidence in our community, our town. Ashby has not lost its identity. It has not suddenly become a more dangerous place to live, to visit, to work in.

Crescent, show that Ashby is becoming a more dangerous place. It is their very rarity that makes us feel that way, because such events are not common in our town. Ashby was, and remains, one of the safest places in the whole of Leicestershire. Our crime rate, particularly crimes involving violence, is very low compared to other towns in the region, and we must not lose sight of that.

Since Christmas there have been some very troubling and sad incidents. There was a particularly nasty assault on a man in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Derby Road and a fight in the early hours one Sunday February morning in Market Street which left one man with very serious head injuries. Arrests have been made in both of these incidents, and one person has been charged with the Derby Road incident.

As your local Police Inspector, I have a big part to play in reassuring you and to keep you safe. One way I can help to do that is by getting as many officers and PCSO’s as possible to spend as much time as possible on foot patrol, and that is something I will be trying to do in the coming days and weeks. And in speaking to the local council and with other partners, we will look to see what more we can do in partnership to reassure you.

We were also shocked by an incident on 1st March in Market Street when a man suffered fatal burns in a fire in a business premises. A full file is being prepared for the Coroner but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with his tragic death.

But shocking though the tragic events of 9th March are, coming so soon after some other nasty and troubling incidents, we should remember that Ashby as a whole is a safe and peaceful town, and one we, the Police, feel very much part of, and proud of.”

I understand why some people may feel that these three, separate and unrelated events, taken in conjunction with the terrible events in Holland

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

Solutions to all puzzles can be found on page 124.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

Reminiscence Boxes We are delighted to be welcoming back Lesley Hextall for another photographic exhibition – her very first exhibition was staged at the Museum. This time she has entitled her work ‘A Mix of my Favourites: Photographs of Landscape and Nature’.

For the third year running we are playing host, over three days in early May, to 300 pupils from Littleover School, Derby. The days are shared between the Museum, where they will be given a talk on the Civil War and 17th century Ashby as part of the course they are studying, and Ashby Castle. The Museum has a collection of eight Reminiscence Boxes, full of real objects to handle, photographs and pictures, for loan. Each box is themed and, from feedback we have received, they have proved to be very helpful

in care homes, where the contents have provoked remembrances and encouraged conversation. Other organisations, such as clubs and Church groups, have borrowed boxes too.

On Thursday May 11th we are hosting a coffee morning for every volunteer who gives their time, in whatever capacity, to making the Museum such a vibrant asset to the town. The last one, held in November 2016, was very successful with over 40 in attendance. Friends of Ashby Museum On Wednesday May 17th at 2p.m. Martin Vaughan will present an illustrated talk on local wildlife photography. The cost is £3 a head, to include light refreshments. Our talks are always popular so please call the Museum, on 01530 560090, to reserve a place.

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option? Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.

I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension? It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.

You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice as any decisions involving a transfer once made are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. This could prove very costly if the wrong decision has been made. Please contact Ian Staley, Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Advisers Limited on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation.

Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Advanced Electrolysis

Advanced Cosmetic Procedures (ACP) uses shortwave diathermy to remove a large variety of skin blemishes such as skin tags, blood spots, thread veins, spider naevi, warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, milia, epidermoid cysts, age spots and other benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions.

Skin Tag Removal

Many people have skins tags which can be quickly and safely removed using ACP. These benign tumours typically grow to about the size of a grain of rice but can be as big as a raisin or even larger. They may be flesh coloured or pigmented and some are pedunculated (grow on a fleshy stalk). They can be successfully removed by ACP leaving Most ACP treatments give superb results with smooth skin once the area has completely healed. most blemishes being completely removed. Even quite large skin defects can be treated so as to leave little or no flaw, particularly when compared to the scarring that remains following traditional surgical removal.

PET’S CORNER

Foods that are

poisonous to your dog

If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devastating effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, often requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, irregular heart rhythm, and fitting. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary intervention even when a small amount has been consumed. Onions, leeks, chives, garlic and shallots All members of the allium family, these foods can cause anaemia in dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form - even

something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reaction in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which attack the red blood cells over a period of time. After a few days you might notice your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly. Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no ill-effects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days after ingestion.

STORYTIME

Lost and Found

By Jackie Brewster

“A gentleman’s come in with a lost and found card for the window.” Carly was new to the job at the village newsagent, and felt as though she was constantly interrupting poor Frances with questions. “What should I say to him?” “Is he wearing a flat cap covered in badges?” Frances looked up from a pile of invoices. “Yes,” Carly said. “It keeps slipping over his eyes.” “That’s Mr Pemrose.” Frances took off her glasses and pushed back her chair. “I’ll be right there.” The gentleman in question was stood at the counter holding a crisp white postcard. He smiled at the sight of Frances.

“I’m intrigued to hear what you’ve found this week, Mr Pemrose,” she said warmly. “I’m glad you asked,” he winked. “I found a cloud of starlings over Kirk’s Farm that looked, for a moment, like the ribbon on a birthday present.” “How wonderful,” Frances said taking the card from him. “Carly would you mind putting this in the window so that passers-by can see it?” Greatly puzzled, Carly took the neatly written card, and squeezed herself between the crisp boxes and the window to reach the lost and found display. “I’m afraid there are no spaces left. Are there any old cards that could be taken down?” “I’m sure there’s a few,” Frances said. “What do you think Mr Pemrose, shall we make some space?” “Oh yes.” The man chuckled as the hat again slipped over his eyes. “Maybe the one about the full moon that rolled up Copper Hill can go?” “Perhaps,” Frances said, “but has that snowy field you found that looked like candyfloss now been returned to its rightful owner?” “I’m sure someone must have claimed it by now,” Mr Pemrose said, turning cheerfully to Carly. “Can you find it, dear?” Carly pulled each card out of its slot and read the descriptions. There were lost cats and bus passes, found cats and bus passes, and every now and then she recognised Mr Pemrose’s neat handwriting. These found things were strange. He’d found a cherry tree in full bloom in February, a double rainbow over the moor and the song of a thrush at midnight. Who could possibly have lost these things she wondered.

Finally, she found a fading card about a field of candyfloss. “Would you like the old card back?” she asked, slipping the new card into the vacant slot. “You keep it,” he said, adjusting his hat while opening the door. With a ring of its bell he left. Carly dusted down her jeans. “Well I don’t know what he’s found,” she said, “but I strongly suspect he’s lost his marbles.” “Mr Pemrose is perfectly sane,” Frances laughed. “But why does he do it?” Carly asked. “No one has lost a flock of starlings, because they don’t belong to anyone, so how can he say that he’s found one?” “Because a year ago Mr Pemrose saw a card posted in our window which said ‘LOST – MY SENSE OF WONDER’,” Frances said. “Ever since then he’s been trying to reunite them with it.” “Weren’t you concerned for the person who posted it?” Carly worried. “Oh, no,” Frances laughed, “the card didn’t originally say that; condensation had made the ink run.” “So what did it really say?” Carly asked. “I can’t remember,” Frances frowned. “A lost umbrella maybe; nothing to lose any sleep over.” “Does Mr Pemrose know?” Carly asked. “If he does it hasn’t stopped him,” Frances smiled. “Besides, everyone likes to read his cards. We all mislay our sense of wonder occasionally.”

CHESS PUZZLE

White to play and annd

win inn inn five fivv mov mooves vess

Is it just old men who play chess? This is the question that must have been bothering you for some time.

8

Be assured, there are many young players under 16 years of age. Some attend junior coaching in Leicester on Saturday afternoons and show dramatic improvement. There are also many chess web sites that teach chess. For example www.chesskid.com is dedicated to juniors. This puzzle was found on the chesskid web site and it’s difficult to solve. It has a killer finish that’s hard to see.

We have a junior chess section associated with the Ashby Ivanhoe Chess Club, and we are looking for new recruits. For more details, please phone Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details.

Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
