In this issue alone we have details of Timber Festival, Blackfordby Open Gardens, the National Forest Walking Festival and more. As this issue lands the Ashby Arts Festival will be under way with its wonderful outdoor gallery. Later this month we also see the return of the Ashby Food & Drink Festival courtesy of Food Gusto.

NATIONAL TRUST NEWS

WALK YOUR WAY THROUGH MAY AT CALKE ABBEY With warm weekends, drawn-out days and bank holidays around every corner, May is the perfect month to grab your walking boots and explore a little further afield. This year, Calke Abbey is taking part in the National Forest Walking Festival, and there are plenty of guided walks around the estate to get you started, from woodland and wildlife walks to minibeast safaris. If you prefer to lead your own walk, look out for seasonal highlights this spring, including a carpet of bluebells in Serpentine Wood. While a magical sight in spring, bluebells are a protected species – you can help Calke Abbey to protect these wild flowers by sticking to the paths and leaving them to grow in the woods. Follow the blue way-marked walk to see the bluebells or download the route from Calke’s website. As May comes to an end, half-term arrives! With over 600 acres of green space to explore, Calke’s back garden is full of endless adventures for families. Go wildlife spotting on a minibeast safari or look out for birds, bees and butterflies on your rambles around the park. On those wet-weather days, get hands-on

with nature-themed activities in Squirt’s Stable, our family activity area. While you’re out and about at Calke Abbey, you might notice some new additions to the parkland this year. Calke has launched a new project called HumanKind, marking 200 years since the death of the ‘Isolated Baronet’, and delving deeper into Calke’s history of isolation. TIMBER FESTIVAL RETURNS Voted Best New Festival at the UK Festival Awards 2018, Timber returns in style to the National Forest in July. With a packed weekend of music and breath-taking performances, national, international and local artists, it will give us a new take on the landscape of the National Forest and inspirational ways for us all to reconnect to nature and make the most of the forest on our doorstep. Musiciaans Gwenno, Jesca Hoop and You Telll Me head the line-up, and UK stand-u up comedian and actor, Phill Jupitus, will share his Wilderness Tracks BC Radio 4’s Geoff Bird. with BB Lost in Translation will present a th hrilling circus show devised just for Timber. Based on Italo Calvino’s novel, The Baron in the Trees, the show includes amazing acrobatics, slapstick, juggling and aerial stunts. Leicester Comedy Festival adds riotous humour to the outdoor vibe with appearances by Alex Hylton, Carly Smallman, and Chris Washington (nominated for lastminute.com Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2017, sell out show at Leicester Comedy Festival). Timber offers incredible immersive experiences throughout the weekend: stand under Dan Fox’s Shimmer, a freestanding installation providing 12 branches of sound and light; dance the evening away at the iconic Eyrie stage, with the best in live music and spoken word, including BBC Radio 6Music’s Elizabeth Alker and late night woodland DJs. Local singing group, The Coal Tits, fuse traditional ballads with their own interpretations of local characters, places, histories and traditions of the heart of the Forest.

Roots Community Choir present acapella renditions of English folk songs and vocal world music. At Timber they’ll create rich vocal arrangements inspired by the Noon Columns found close to the festival site. CircularityRise run an open mic showcase for young people in Burton upon Trent. At Timber they will acoustically ‘blow up the camp fire’, showcasing their performance skills hosted by Kirby, of The Voice fame. Seams, a new piece created for Timber 2019, will take the audience on a journey inspired by the evocative names and diagrams of the coal seams that surround Feanedock. Don your miner’s helmet and venture as if below ground, for a sound and light installation through dark stony bind, and nether coal, before emerging into a brave new world, viewing the festival site in a whole new light. Locally-sourced food and drink, inspiring health and well-being activities, engaging woodland crafts and games all feature in a packed programme that will help bring Timber festival-goers closer to trees and nature.

LOCAL EVENTS

NATIONAL FOREST WALKING FESTIVAL Now in its 12th year, the National Forest Walking Festival 2019 is an opportunity to lace up your boots and join the knowledgeable festival walk leaders as they help you to explore in and around 200 square miles of the National Forest. The festival runs from Saturday 18th through to Thursday 30th May with a programme of guided and themed walks and activities for all ages and abilities. Discover historic towns and villages, enjoy wonderful countryside and learn more about the area’s rich and varied history. This year they have nearly 100 walks for you to choose from, plus a whole range of walking-related activities to keep you striding out in the Forest all year round. The walks cover distances from one to fourteen miles and cater for wheelchairs, pushchairs, health walkers and ramblers. New for this year there are also specialist photography walks and activities such as orienteering, geocaching and map-reading. The creation of the National Forest has opened up more than three times the amount of land than was previously available for us all to explore and enjoy. It’s the boldest environmentally-led regeneration project in the country. With a variety of partners, there have been more than 8.7 million trees planted over the last 27 years, and the aim is to reach 10 million trees!

18

You can support the project through a donation that will help create and look after the Forest and you can help plant more trees. Through the ‘Plant a Tree’ scheme, you’re invited to plant a tree to remember a loved one or celebrate a happy life event. You can also ‘Dedicate a Tree’ online, where the team plant the tree for you. In either case you receive a personalised certificate with your own message and choice of design. You can also volunteer your time to help at Timber festival, or help manage woodlands or maintain walking routes through the Forest. Walking in the National Forest is a year round pleasure so don’t feel the Festival is your only chance to enjoy the area. As well as all the guided walks during the Festival there are many regular organised local walks you can join throughout the year, or you can grab a map or pick up a leaflet, go outside and explore on your own. Each step in the National Forest can take you somewhere completely different. Follow gentle trails through vibrant young woodlands and nature-rich ancient forests. Discover more about the area’s heritage or let a canal towpath take you to the nearest pub lunch. For more information about the festival you can visit www.thenationalforestwalkingfestival.org.uk or call Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre on 01283 222848. ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Welcome to this month’s news from Ashby Museum. We are delighted to say that Ian Scruton, Leslie Smith, Janet Argyle and Robert Smith have joined us as a result of our request for volunteers in a recent Ashby Life issue. They are now helping with documentary research, multimedia, front-of-house and Modes data inputting respectively. We are still keen for more volunteers to join us so do get in touch if you can spare two hours a fortnight and would like to do something really worthwhile to help preserve the town’s rich history. We also welcome back Bill Devitt after a furlough due to a fractured patella. Great to see you back Bill. The butterfly exhibition is now displayed in the Loudoun Gallery and we congratulate Bali Love Jenkins on her excellent 3D metal wall sculpture, ‘The Butterfly Hive’. LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

ASHBY COMMUNITY ROADSHOW EVENT Thursday 6th June 3pm to 6pm Hood Park Leisure Centre To celebrate Volunteers Week 2019, several local organisations are working together to organise an Ashby Community Roadshow event at Hood Park Leisure Centre. Volunteers’Week takes place between the 1st and 7th of June every year and is a chance to thank volunteers for their valuable contributions. This event isn’t just about volunteering. It’s also a celebration of everything that goes on in the Ashby area. You might want to take up a new hobby or sport, get involved as a volunteer or show some support for the local community.

Ashby has a thriving community and lots to offer, but sometimes people just don’t know what is out there or how to get involved. Whatever your interests, there is something out there for you, so go along on the day and find out more! The session will be open to the public, local groups, businesses and organisations. The aim is to promote local services, to learn about what is on offer in and around Ashby, and to encourage more people to volunteer and get involved in their local community. There will be information stalls from a variety of different community groups and organisations and the opportunity to chat to people about how you could get involved in their activities. You can drop in at any time between 3pm and 6pm. For more information, please contact Dave Cliffe on dave.c@valonline.org.uk or telephone 0116 2575033

LOCAL AUTHOR COMPETITION

WIN A COPY OF PIPPA’S LATEST BOOK! Local author Philippa Seago is celebrating the publication of her second novel, The Happiness Project: An emotional, heartwarming pageturner, written under her pen name of Pippa James. It is a sequel to her first book, I Will Survive: A laugh out loud, feel good romantic comedy about surviving love, life and parenting one gin at a time, following the same three mums, outspoken Frankie, super organised Alison and painfully shy Kate, as the friendship that started at the school gate is tested by difficulties organising childcare, helping out on the PTA and coming up with World Book Day costumes. ‘But it’s not just about them being mums,’ Pippa says. ‘It’s about love, friendship and identity too.’ The idea of setting a book around a school in a small village came from Pippa’s own experiences when her two children now aged 7 and 9 started at Melbourne Infant School. ‘Through my kids’ friendships, I got to meet so many other parents and some of them are now my closest friends,’ she explains. And will the people of Melbourne recognise any of the characters in the books? ‘I’ve definitely not based them on anyone in particular!’ Pippa says. ‘The situations the women have to deal with should be familiar to all parents and readers from all over the country have said they know people p p just j like these women.’

As well as being a mum and a writer, Pippa is also a psychology teacher in Derby and has had to be very resourceful to create the time to write. She has found that a good place to write is local pubs, including the Chip and Pin and the Crewe and Harpur, where she can be found with a cup of tea and her laptop in the evenings or on her way home from work. ‘It’s important to get away from all the distractions at home,’ she says. ‘I’ve even sat and written in a café while the kids are at a party nearby.’ Her advice to other budding authors is to write in whatever time you can find: ‘You don’t need whole days to write, an hour here and there adds up in the end.’. Both books are available as ebooks and paperback from Amazon, published by Bookouture. If you would like to hear more from Pippa James, you can follow her on Twitter: @PippaJamesbooks or Facebook: @PippaJamesAuthor

ON THE BEAT After a number of recent incidents in the Ashby area where the victims have handed over large amounts of money, I would like to remind residents of some of the steps they can take if approached on the doorstep by traders offering home repairs, as well as being clear about their legal rights. • If in doubt, don’t open the door. Ask a family member or friend to make some enquiries about the business on your behalf. • Be wary of those who cold-call at your door – they could be a rogue trader. Never forget that you can close the door and end any conversation you are uncomfortable with. • Get as much information about the business as you can before you make a decision to have work carried out. Don’t be rushed into agreeing to any work. Obtain quotes from elsewhere if you think work is required on your home before making a decision. • Remember that consumers have a 14 days cooling off period to cancel contracts made in their homes.

38

If the business won’t give information about these rights, they may be a rogue trader. • If you decide to have work carried out, NEVER pay cash up front and NEVER let the trader take you to the bank to withdraw any money. • If you suspect a rogue trader calling at your door dial 101. In an emergency call 999. You can also report rogue doorstep callers please to Trading Standards on 03454 040506. ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Like me, you have probably never been faced with the situation of having to make a ‘Mayday’ call? For those who like boats it is part of the training to stay safe, in fact for over 80 years it has been recognised as the international distress signal to be used by people in ‘grave and imminent danger’. I did wonder if the May Day holiday was somehow related; and of course it isn’t! The ‘Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!’ phrase (yes, you are meant to repeat it three times) is apparently an anglicised version of the French ‘m’aidez’ that means ‘help me’. You just hope that if you ever made such a call that the best possible person would receive the message and respond with urgency, control and calm reassurance.

46

It can be a bit like that for all of us in the storms of life. In the Bible we get a great story of Peter having a ‘Mayday!’ moment when he tried to walk on the water just like Jesus. No sooner had he cried out ‘save me’, Jesus immediately put out his hand and caught him. The Bible clearly tells us that without Jesus we are all in ‘grave and imminent danger’ and he is the saviour to all those who call on his name. His calm and reassuring voice continues to be broadcast. Perhaps you need to tune in to his frequency and think about making that call? Useful passage to look up: Matthew ch 14 vs 22-33 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

BLACKFORDBY OPEN GARDENS Blackfordby celebrated the start of last summer’s amazing heatwave with its first Open Gardens event and hundreds of gardeners turned up to support it. Over 450 visitors in fact, resulting in £1,400 raised for local charities and projects. Due to this amazing success the Open Gardens will return, this time a month earlier on June 1st and 2nd, with gardens ‘old’ and new plus many special venues opening for the first time. In support of the 15 or so village gardens the following venues will be open; Blackfordby Primary School, St Margaret’s and Methodist Churches, the Old School Room and Blackfordby Village Hall. Refreshments and wristbands for the event are available in these venues for just £4 and offer entry

50

to all of the open gardens and venues on both days between 10am and 4pm. Blackfordby Open Gardens chairman Brian Hammond said: “Our first year was a great success by any standards and many local charities and projects have already benefited as a result. Also this year, look out for some flowerpot men and women which will be on display around the village for the first time.” Maps of the gardens and venues will be available in a programme on the day and car parking, subject to weather conditions, is also free on the green off Main Street. Children under 16 are free (accompanied by an adult) but please note that no dogs (other than guide dogs) are allowed. You can find out more via the Facebook page (blackfordbyopengardens) or www.blackfordbyopengardens.org.uk

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

ARE YOU BEACH READY? We think everybody is beach ready! Fingers crossed that this year we have a summer as great as last year! It’s a really amazing time, I love it! But, with the warm weather comes the dreaded feeling of body confidence. As it gets warmer, we tend to wear less clothes, and that means more of our bodies are exposed, not only to the sun, but to ourselves and others! Now, I’m here to tell you that body confidence has nothing to do with having the perfect body. Not at all, it’s about feeling comfortable in your own body, feeling happy and secure no matter how you look. However, I can honestly say, from my own experience, that I definitely feel more confident the better shape I’m in. I feel better in t-shirts, better in swimwear, better topless (oo err!)…you get the picture. Now, many of us tend to think that we have to look like all those Instagram pictures of super amazing bodies and if we don’t then we have failed and must cover up.

58

Let me tell you, improving your body just a very small bit will increase your body confidence enormously. Forget trying to match those perfect bodies, just try to improve and work on your own. We are all different and even a small step forward is definitely a step in the right direction. I speak to a lot of people, and sometimes they say that they can’t get to the gym 3 times a week so it’s not going to benefit them. Well, that’s wrong! Twice per week is progress, even once is progress. I’ve seen it all too many times before - doing too much then leads to negative progress and eventually those people end up not coming at all. It’s a bit like the tortoise and the hare, slow, steady and consistent always wins in the end. HOW CAN WE HELP? Well, as exercise professionals, it’s our job to tailor your training plan around your time and attendance. We offer so many different workouts, plans, help and support, that you’ll never feel alone and always feel comfortable in the gym I personally guarantee it!

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

I won’t lie to you, getting in better shape is going to take a little bit of commitment and hard work, but it will definitely be worth it! If you’re looking for a specific training plan, we offer our superb 8-week summer ready plan and our amazing ‘Find You plan’ designed to get you in shape fast! We can do this with one to one sessions (this includes gym membership), or depending on your budget, we can do this via our brandnew training app that has workouts and weekly challenges. This plan can be done here at the gym or in any other gym too! I’m really passionate about helping you, as are the rest of the Fitness Republic family. Whatever your circumstances, we can help for sure. Don’t hesitate to get in touch via info@fitnessrepublic.co.uk for more information on any of our plans, or just for a chat or general information. MONEY MATTERS

WHAT IS A P11D FORM? The P11D is a statutory form required by HMRC from UK based employers detailing the cash equivalents of benefits and expenses that they have provided during the tax year to their employees. If you reimburse any of your employees with any expenses that are not covered by an exemption or you make any benefits available to any of your employees you will need to complete a P11D for each of them.

Any benefits that attract Class 1A National Insurance contributions are reportable in brown coloured boxes on the form. • Employers are required to provide all of their employees (and former employees if requested) with a completed form P11D which shows the cash equivalent of all benefits in kind and expense payments made to each employee who earns £8,500 or more a year including benefits.

The deadline to complete these forms is July 6th 2019

• A P11D will be required for any director unless they meet certain qualifying conditions.

P11Ds can be submitted to HMRC in either hard copy or an electronic submission format.

• The P11D and P11D(b) forms can be completed and submitted together by post or online.

There are currently 14 sections on the P11D: • Section A - Assets Transferred • Section B - Payments made on behalf of the employee • Section C - Credit Cards and vouchers • Section D - Living Accommodation • Section E - Mileage Allowances • Section F - Cars and car fuel • Section G - Company Vans • Section H - Beneficial Loans • Section I - Medical Health • Section J - Qualifying Relocation Payments • Section K - Services Supplied • Section L - Assets placed at employee’s disposal • Section M - Other Items • Section N - Expenses Payments

• When the employer is not required to complete any P11Ds it ticks a box on form P35 to confirm this.

66

• A penalty may lead to increased ‘risk profile’; late payment or late submission may contribute to the loss of gross payment status for CIS. NON SUBMISSION • Failure to submit form P11D(b) by the 6 July deadline will produce a penalty of £100 per every 50 employees (or part of 50) per month, or part month until payment.

If you have received a P11D benefits statement form and are unsure as to what procedure to undertake, please contact Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk

BODY MATTERS with Vitalize Physiotherapy

MUSCLE CRAMP OR STRAIN? It seems a lot of people aren’t aware of the difference between muscle cramping and a muscle strain. It’s really important to know the difference....

which will result in a bigger injury with more pain and a longer recovery time. Once more, if you’ve strained a muscle and ‘stretch it out’ like you might with cramp you’re likely to separate the muscle fibres even further.

A cramp is an involuntary forceful muscle contraction that takes a while to relax. Although it will be uncomfortable (sometimes very uncomfortable) at the time, once it eases there should not be much pain accept for a dull ache. You might have to cease activity if the muscle keeps cramping and you may wake up the next day with the muscle feeling tender but you should be able to function well. Muscles that have cramped respond well to standard recovery strategies such as gentle stretching, massage and foam rolling.

This is why it’s so important to know the difference in sensation between your muscles cramping and a strain. If you cramp a little and are able ‘push through it’, chances are you’ll be a little sore but okay. This is common in football and other sports.

A muscle strain is where the actual muscle fibres are separated/pulled apart. There are different levels of separation, normally the more separation there is the more painful. This results in inflammation and pain on muscle contraction. The brain will then not contract the muscle to prevent this pain, causing it to feel weak. A muscle strain normally presents as an acute pain, some describe it as a stabbing like. If you run or ‘push through’ through this pain you’ll potentially pull more muscle fibres apart,

70

However, if you actually strain a muscle and ‘push through it’ you’ll likely make the injury worse and worse. A small muscle strain (grade 1) normally keeps people out of action for 10-14 days. A significant strain (grade 2) normally takes between 6-8 weeks to recover! In my experience, the number of people who ‘push through’ a muscle strain, turning a 2 week recovery into a 6-8 week recovery, because they thought they had cramp is actually quite high. Please don’t let this happen to you!

LOCAL EVENTS

THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME The National Garden Scheme Leicestershire Gardens opens in May. The National Garden Scheme is a charity and in 2018 we donated £3.1 million to various charities including £500,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK. Donations were also made to Horatio’s Garden, Mind and many other charities. This money is raised by volunteers who open their gardens for a small admission fee and from the sale of tea and homemade cake. In May, there are 42 gardens open in Leicestershire and Derbyshire, full details including opening times, directions and post codes can be found at www. ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/ Many gardens are dog friendly, there are no admission charges for children, some gardens have wheelchair access and plant sales on site. In the areas surrounding Ashby de la Zouch, Ibstock and Melbourne there are many gardens to enjoy. In Ashby de la Zouch the Bluebell Arboretum and Nursery opens which has 9 acres of beautiful woodland. In May the trees will be filled with fresh green foliage, blossom and much birdsong to enjoy.

There are British native tre ees and many rare and unusu ual non-native species. In Loughborough Whatto on Gardens opens its 15 acre garden an ideall gard den for a day out with space for all the family to enjoy. There are lawned areas, mature trees and shrubs, large herbaceous borders in bloom and an ornamental pond. Also in Loughborough 10 Brook Road opens which has a 1 acre mature garden with an abundance of rhododendrons, azaleas and Japanese maples promising plenty of colour for their May opening. There are also colourful borders, a stream and clay lined pond, with seating areas dotted around the garden. One of the larger gardens, Melbourne Hall has 17 acres for visitors to enjoy, including woodlands, waterside planting and attractive herbaceous borders. It also features some 300 year old trees and 18th century statuary. Repton village has an open day with 6 different gardens to view. 16 Askew Road has been inspired by a Persian influence with terraces and a central fountain. A restricted palate of green and white planting creates a peaceful garden. Askew Cottage has many connected areas, including a box-edged perennial garden, a cloud hedge and wildlife pond. 10 Chestnut way is a plant paradise, with overflowing flower borders full of colour and butterfly friendly plants. There is also a large organic fruit and vegetable garden. 22 Pinfold cottage has unusual tropical plants such as ginger and cannas, and there are also 20 allotments on view, together with a Community Garden open on the edge of Repton village. The final garden in the group, Woodend cottage, has herbaceous borders, a pond, grassed labyrinth, a mixed woodland area and a Potager. These are just a few of the many gardens opening in the area in May to raise funds for nursing and cancer charities. All gardens have modest entrance fees, excellent homemade cake plus a warm and friendly welcome. Make sure to visit a garden local to you. See www.ngs.org.uk for more information.

YOUR WELLBEING “The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered ‘Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money in order to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then he dies having never really lived.” I read this and thought how much it connects with our lives today. From school children we are focused on exams to take us to the next step, careers carefully planned out, working for a better life, working for retirement and all the time life is marching on. Many people have to change direction due to ill health, redundancy or relationship breakdown and their focus is usually on what they have lost, fear of the unknown and loss of status. Inevitably, this can result in anxiety and depression. Humans are programmed to find solutions and adapt to change but we can only do this once the mind is calm. It can help to offload concerns and fears in order to change focus on to what we

have got and what we can do to regain a sense of autonomy. At futureminds we have counsellors who can offer a variety of options to help clients enjoy their lives for today. Please call us on 01530 414144 to make an appointment or see www.futureminds.co.uk

Century Theatre drama, music, comedy and more Wednesday 8th May 7.30pm TEAM VIKING – £10

Five years ago, James’s best friend Tom was diagnosed with heart cancer and given three months to live. His last wish was to be given a full Viking burial. This is the remarkable, hilarious, heart-lifting and outlandish story of how James actually gave his best mate the send-off he wanted. Featuring live music, side-splitting anecdotes and even an actual Viking helmet, James Rowland’s Team Viking – a comic ode to death and friendship – now embarks on a UK tour with Tangram Theatre.

Saturday 11th May 7.30pm COAL AND CANALS – £10

A superb multimedia show performed by the five piece Zouch Band including original film, narration and song documenting the intertwined history and heritage of the coal and canals industries, the joint bedrocks of The Industrial Revolution. Brian Langtry, well-known local playwright and producer, brings another historically important piece of theatre to local audiences.

16th, 17th & 18th May 7.30pm (18th May 2pm)

BEDROOM FARCE – £12

The play, set in the 1970s, sees 4 couples during the evening of Kate and Malcolm’s house warming party. All of the couples have their own issues, but none more than Trevor and Susannah who spend the evening drawing everyone else into their hilariously dysfunctional relationship. Kate loses her clothes, Jan gets stuck under Nick, Delia does her best to get two words out of her husband Earnest and poor Malcolm still isn’t any good at DIY. A real look at 70s British values through the eyes of today.

BEAUTY TIPS

GEL-BASED SKINCARE WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GELBASED SKINCARE?

The world of skincare is constantly evolving. Sometimes it feels like every week we are offered some new miracle product, a new saviour of the skin. However, everybody’s skin is different and what works for others, may not always work for you. So, it can be hard to tell whether these new miracle products will truly help with your skin woes. Well, we are here to tell you, that if you have combination or oily skin, gel-based skincare is one trend that you can really get behind. WHAT IS GELBASED SKINCARE? Gels are not exactly a new invention in skincare; they’ve been around for at least the last few years. One of the main elements that differentiates gels from other skincare products is that they are usually oil-free. Gel moisturisers are often water-based, and this helps them to absorb into the skin much quicker. Other gel skincare products can have similar results, leaving the skin feeling refreshed, rather than weighed down. THREE TYPES OF SKIN You may be surprised to learn that there are only three skin types: oily, dry and combination.

Combination skin can be oily, dry, both or neither, and as such, often it can be hard to find skincare products to suit all the different areas of the skin. This is where gel skincare comes in. For oily or combination skin especially, gel-based skincare is great as the absence of oil in the formulas means no excess oil is being added to the skin. GEL MOISTURISERS  LIGHTWEIGHT AND EASILY ABSORBED How many times have you put on moisturiser and then had to wait ages for it to dry before you can finish the rest of your morning routine? And, if you apply makeup afterwards, have you ever found that although your skin feels hydrated, your makeup starts to slip part way through the day? Most likely those experiences took place while you were using a cream-based moisturiser, so perhaps it’s time to give gel a go. Gel moisturisers are easily absorbed by the skin, making them a great base for your makeup. REVOLUTIONARY GELBASED FORMULAS The benefits of gel-based skincare can stretch further than just lightweight and oil-free formulas. Our Sonya Illuminating Gel contains a range of carefully selected Asian botanicals which help to brighten the skin. In addition, the gel in our Sonya Refreshing Gel Cleanser helps to cleanse the face without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This means that when you wash with the cleanser, your face is left feeling refreshed and clean, rather than dry and tight. For those with combination or oily skin, the benefits of gel skincare are plentiful. THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS April showers bring May flowers –what nicer time of year could there be for being out in the nature reserves and open spaces of the National Forest?

If this young bramble is not removed, in a couple of years the wild flowers will be swamped!

TCV will be round and about this month helping at sites across the Forest. Among other things we will be returning to wildflower meadows we have planted to make sure that the target wildlife-friendly plants are growing, and not just nettles and brambles. NETTLES AND BRAMBLES – FRIENDS OR FOES? We humans have a love-hate relationship with nettles and brambles. Blackberry picking, and the resulting blackberry and apple crumbles, form happy childhood memories for many, but who has not been badly scratched? You may struggle to be positive about stinging nettles, but did you know they were deliberately imported in Roman times as a fibre producing plant for clothing and ropes, or that they taste wonderful as a Spring tonic in soups? The wildlife value of both plants cannot be ignored. Nettles are caterpillar food for some of our best loved butterfly species, which might become extinct without them. Brambles form an important safe nesting site for birds, and feed a multitude of species from voles to moths with their flowers and berries.

SOUK de la Zouch

Although brambles and nettles are wonderful for wildlife, they can be very invasive and take over an area, leading to loss of biodiversity. We therefore try to keep them in check at the sites we work on, carefully checking for any nesting birds before cutting back and leaving well alone if nesting sites are spotted. IN YOUR GARDEN

HANGING BASKETS

Gardens are blooming and you are no doubt bursting to be creative in the garden, so here’s the plan - plant up a hanging basket or two. It’s easy, doesn’t take very long and yo ou will be rewarded for weeks after with cheery plants. First of all choose your basket. Even an old bassket will probably do as the basket itself can be hidden n with trailing plants. I actually like the wire baskets which start at about £5. You can buy a readymade lin ner but I have found that lining it with moss from the laawn (or even grass cuttings) gives a more natural effecct. Pack this so that your lining is 1.5 to 2cm thickk. The moss or grass cuttings will then require an inn ner liner of plastic, perforated with small holes for drain nage. One of the most important things is to have a basket that will retain some water. The best way to do o this is to put an old saucer or plant pot tray in the bo ottom before you put the soil in. This will stop all the water flooding out as soon as you water it and keep the soil moist. Similarly it is worth mixing water retaining granules or gel into the compost. The granules will absorb water and allow the water to be slowly released. Fill the basket about half full with compost. I suggest

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 a multi-purpose or John Innes No 2. If you have a wire basket I recommend carefully making small holes in the lining for the heads of training plants to be gently pushed through. Do this just above half the depth of the basket. In the centre of the basket I usually put an upright plant for structure such as a zonal geranium. The plants around that central plant can be of a trailing variety. Pack in as many as you can and then carefully firm in and fill with compost to about 1 cm below the rim of the basket. Some slow release fertiliser plugs are good to push in at this stage. The most important thing is to water your basket at least once a day. In exposed windy or sunny positions water twice a day. The garden centres are full of plants for baskets so the choice is yours. Consider the different colours and how well they go – you may want vibrant reds, purples, yellows and oranges together or a more subtle combination of light pinks blues and whites may be more your style. I always use geraniums in baskets as they flower so profusely and they are very forgiving if you go away for a few days and don’t have anyone to water for you. Other plants that flower generously are pansies and lobelias.

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

WHAT A WEEK WITH THE PIRATES! Ahoy there! The wonderful Pirates’ ship set sail from Ashby School on 13th April after a hilarious and successful run. Audiences were treated to great performances each night from MD Catherine Matthews and her orchestra; the soft-hearted Pirate King and his Crew; beautiful soprano Mabel and her sisters; the “orphaned” Major-General; the cowardly police force whose numbers were increased by the supportive Stage Crew; spurned would-be Pirate Ruth; and Frederic – whose “Elvis”-inspired moves had the theatre in stitches – everyone had a fantastic time with the Broadway version of Pirates of Penzance. Even Queen Victoria put in an appearance! There is nothing quite like show week for a theatre company and AMTG is no different. The camaraderie amongst the whole team, on and off stage, is one of the great strengths of AMTG, and this team spirit really showed, throughout rehearsals, and during the run. As a much smaller company this year, everyone, from the youngest to the oldest Member, proved what a committed, talented and loyal group we are. With a few issues along the way, everyone pulled together and were brilliantly lead by Alan Hutchinson as Director. The Stage Crew, who built the set and props with just eight weeks’ notice, also

agreed to be part of the Cast! Thank you to them all, and thank you to our audiences – we’re sure they had a great time with us as usual. We’re absolutely certain that Gilbert and Sullivan would have approved of our treatment of their wonderful comic operetta – we think they would also have approved of the costumes, the production and the performances, especially from our Patter Song-singing Major General, Pirate King, Frederic and Ruth. They all spent many weeks getting their tongues around those numbers, and despite initial fears, didn’t require oxygen after delivering them! On to 2020 now, when our show is the glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I. If you would like to join us please email enquiries@amtg.co.uk, and come and be a part of this truly amazing group.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

PAINTING BY NUMBERS WITH ST HELENS What do you think of obituaries? Lots of people admit that death notices are the first thing they’ll turn to in the newspaper. It seems like that’s one of the few times when the subject of death isn’t a taboo.

At St Helen’s, we have three Wednesday evenings coming up where we will we be talking about death, acknowledging how much it hurts, and discovering how to have open conversations about it. Gravetalk is at 7pm on 7th May in the Heritage Centre, and is an informal café space with delicious refreshments to accompany our discussions. We also have Plan Your Own Funeral on 15th and Leaving a Legacy on 22nd. A particularly notable obituary appeared in national newspapers recently - Dan Robbins was the man who invented painting-by-numbers. He painted the first 35 subjects himself, starting with landscapes before branching out to horses, puppies and kittens. Robbins once said his inspiration was Leonardo da Vinci - “I remembered hearing that Leonardo used numbered background patterns for his apprentices, and I decided to try something like that.”

PROVIDING A SAFE AND RELAXING EXPERIENCE FOR YOUR CAT

The first May bank holiday sees us following in Leonardo and Dan’s illustrious footsteps as part of the Arts Festival. At the same time as the town proudly presents it ‘outdoor gallery’ of paintings, we will be having an ‘All Things Bright & Beautiful’ communal, outdoor, painting-by-numbers board. The question on everyone’s lips – Will it include horses, puppies and kittens? The town’s children are invited to celebrate more things bright and beautiful with us on our Children’s Nature Day! Do join us from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 29th May.

We reach over 9,000 people each week across our Facebook witter pages. & Tw

BOOK REVIEWS

A LIFE LIKE NO OTHER

Take a trip into another time and another life. Or stay in your own life and be inspired by ideas of self-improvement. This month’s reads will certainly make you pause to reflect. The Familiars Stacey Halls 1612 is a dangerous time to be a woman in Northern England, as King James has declared war on witches. Fleetwood is 17 and pregnant for the fourth time. Her other pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Desperate not to miscarry this child or lose her own life in childbirth, she turns to a local midwife, Alice Grey. When Alice gets accused of witchcraft, Fleetwood has to decide how far she’ll go to save her friend. Loosely based on the Pendle witch trials, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner.

The Honey Bus Meredith May With a depressed single mother who could barely get out of bed, Meredith relied on her grandfather for love and solace. She also found another avenue for learning life’s lessons – her grandfather’s bees. Through the hive, Meredith learned about family, loyalty, self-sacrifice and resilience. A thought-provoking memoir.

Louis & Louise Julie Cohen A baby is born in 1970s Maine, USA. In one reality she’s a girl – Louise; in the other, a boy – Louis. Both have the same friends, the same interests and the same ambitions. Both flee from their hometown after one fateful night that changes everything. Original, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable, Louis & Louise is perfect for book clubs.

Voices of Powerful Women Zoe Sallis When Maya Angelou calls something a ‘fascinating collection’, you know you’re in for a treat and Voices of Powerful Women certainly doesn’t disappoint. Zoe Sallis interviewed 40 women for her book, including Judi Dench, Tracey Emin, Benazir Bhutto and Mariane Pearl. Each one gives us a glimpse into what made her who she is today. You’ll learn what inspires these women, what angers them, who they admire and what advice they want to pass on to the next generation.

The Energy Plan James Collins Nutritionist James Collins is a world leader in the field of performance nutrition. He’s guided the eating habits of Olympic athletes and sports stars. His first book, The Energy Plan, is not about cutting out food groups, quick fix diets or denial. Instead, it’s about fuelling your body so it performs better and you feel fitter, have more energy and can fight off illnesses. The Energy Plan is well worth a read, whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to avoid the 3pm energy slump.

Micro Living Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen This book takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme. Many of the 40 homes featured are smaller than 150 square feet. From a refurbished Airstream to a treehouse, what these homes lack in space, they more than make up for in character. The book includes floorplans, advice and lots of lust-worthy photographs. Whether you’re thinking of building your own tiny home, want some tips to make the most of smaller rooms or just fancy taking a peek into how other people live, Micro Living is for you.

PETS’ CORNER

THE DANGERS OF HEATSTROKE Summer can be a great time to help your dog become fit and healthy, particularly if they’ve become a little sluggish over the winter months. Warm weather and long days are made for dog walking, but is it too hot for your dog to exercise? HELPING YOUR DOG AVOID HEATSTROKE Heatstroke is a serious health issue for dogs that can affect their internal organs and cause catastrophic damage very quickly. It’s a condition you need to watch out for in summer, particularly when exercising your dog. Controlling their environment when exercising is crucial during the summer – only walking them in the early morning or late evening is a good way to reduce the chances of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HEATSTROKE? • Breathing rapidly or panting heavily • Red gums • Disorientation • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Drooling • Lethargy • Seizures

118

EXERCISING YOUR DOG IN THE SUMMER It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise when it’s hot outside, and to be vigilant for respiratory distress or any other indications that your dog is struggling to deal with the heat. Take plenty of water with you as dogs can become dehydrated very quickly in the heat and try to walk or exercise in shaded areas so they have a chance to cool down. Summer requires additional vigilance when exercising your dog, but you can keep them safe and healthy with a little extra care.

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

FINANCIAL ADVICE FOR NEW PARENTS Parents can often find their time entirely taken up with looking after the newest member of their family. It’s a life changing experience that will have an impact on their finances too. PLANNING PAYS For any couple, one of the biggest adjustments is managing on one salary, so working out a budget together will ensure that they have taken care of the monthly overheads. As well as statutory maternity pay or maternity allowance, you may be entitled to other things like tax credits or child benefits, free NHS prescriptions and dental care. PROTECTING WHAT’S IMPORTANT Parents want to do what’s best for their children, but many overlook putting insurance plans in place in case anything should happen to either of them. It may be an uncomfortable topic to discuss, but nobody would want to leave their family struggling financially. The monthly cost of a protection plan is a lot less than many people imagine, often no more than a family might spend on a round of coffee and cake on the high street.

SAVING FOR THEIR FUTURE A Junior ISA is a tax-free savings scheme that enables parents to put money aside either into a cash or a stocks and shares account for their child’s future. The allowance for the 2019-20 tax year has been increased to £4,368. On their 18th birthday, the child can access their savings. Those who want to plan even further ahead can open a pension for their child, saving up to £2,880 per year tax-free. Tax relief on pension contributions at 25% means that the amount actually invested becomes £3,600. When the child reaches 18, they can continue to invest in it and access their pension at age 55.

As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most costeffective way. For a free review of your current financial situation, please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020.
