NEW PHOTOS OF ASHBY The New Photos of Ashby Facebook page is always busy with photos being uploaded and shared of all our local landmarks, town events and attractions from Jim’s Tractor Run to Ashby’s FABulous to the magnificent outdoor gallery put up each May for the Ashby Arts Festival. In the last month or so there have been numerous photos of the shop windows in town decked out in all their festive décor, the crowds at the Christmas Fair (despite the rain) and the sheer madness of the Bath grounds as 1,500 Santas kicked off the third Ashby Santa Fun Run.

Photo: Jill Chapman Photo: Brian Winfield

One thing guaranteed to generate a flurry of new images however is the weather. A rare sunny day can lead to idyllic images of the castle or even Hood Park lido. In early 2018 the lengthy period of frost and snow we faced was captured by a number of local photographers. Here are just a few examples; all showing Ashby covered in a blanket of snow. Maybe they will inspire you to view Ashby with a fresh pair of eyes this year or even to take up a new hobby and dig out your camera ready to snap and share your view of our town!

To join the group simply search for ‘New Photos of Ashby’ on Facebook. Photo: Lynne Cook

MONEY MATTERS

ust o t ose a uar

lues

Well here we are into a New Year and here at Bleathwood we are well aware some of you may be suffering those January blues. Many of you will be doing your best to keep them at bay by sitting with a lovely cuppa thumbing through holiday brochures or surfing on line. All with a view of searching for blue skies when summer finally arrives or going and finding it earlier. Consider this - you will probably end up spending quite a few hours searching for those best deals for your flight to the sun. Here at Bleathwood we are working hard with our clients helping them plan for more than an annual trip to the sun. When our clients finally start to work less or even enjoy 365 days off a year, with the opportunity to dust off those winter blues more than once a year. Why is that we spend so many hours on things like planning our holidays, but we fail to set aside 60 to 90 minutes a year to create our future plans? Then next important step - review them. So what is financial planning all about? Well it is more than just sitting down and talking about pensions or your ISA’s. Or asking questions like, should I be investing more in China or other Emerging Markets or taking less risk? Or even another conversation about Brexit. It is more about how your money is going to work for YOU. We help our client’s see how their finances map out their future, help them see what they can do, what they want to do and what they need to do to ensure it happens. We try to take away the guess work. Even try to answer lots of those “what if” questions. Like when can we, (or I), afford to retire, send my children to University, buy that holiday home, travel far and wide. How do we do this? Well we listen, gather the data and start to build a personal picture using Prophecy, our Cashflow Modelling tool. Financial advice should be personal, not products, they are sometimes the tools you will need to adopt to achieve the life you need. 18

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd So why should you do it? Well we are living in a time of low interest rates and potentially rising inflation, it is difficult to find ways of making money work smarter, whilst not knowing how long you need it to last? Add to that statistically we are living longer. They always say – “If you fail to plan then you plan to fail”. So whilst you are suffering your January Blues. Further frustrated because you have already broken 1 or 2 of your New Year resolutions. Change your thought process. Dig out your finances and give them an early spring clean by having a chat with your Independent Financial Advisors. You may never again suffer those January Blues – but we cannot promise that.

PARENTING

itc i

t e

le i le Wor i

Achieving a decent work-life balance can seem like the Holy Grail of parenting. But it doesn’t have to be… Decide what you want This may seem obvious (MORE TIME!), but it’s a good idea to set out exactly what it is you want to achieve, and what you’re prepared to do to get there. Do you want to pick the kids up from school more often, or have more time with your toddler during the day? Do you need more time off during the school holidays? Or do you just want to attend sports days, school plays and other activities without using your holiday allowance? How much of your salary can you afford to sacrifice? Making your current job work for you If you’re happy in your current job, could you reduce your hours? When you factor in childcare costs you might not be as out of pocket as you might expect. Or perhaps you could work at home more often (saving time on the dreaded commute) or change the hours you work? Starting work just 15 minutes earlier each day and cutting your lunch by 15 minutes might mean you could leave the office 2.5 hours earlier every Friday. If you want an extra day off, perhaps you could work longer hours but fewer days? Your rights Most employees have the statutory right to make an application for flexible working and employers need a good reason to turn down such a request. ‘Flexible working’ covers everything from changing your hours to sharing your job with a colleague. Parents are also entitled to take up to 18 weeks off work (up to four weeks a year) unpaid to look after their child, as long as they’ve been in the same job for at least one year. The Citizens Advice has a lot of information for people who want to change their working hours. See www.citizensadvice.org.uk. 22

Looking for a new job More and more employers are starting to wake up to the fact that happier employees usually leads to a better standard of work. You’ll find that a lot of job adverts now mention flexible working. According to the Office of National Statistics, more than 7 million people in the UK have some kind of flexible working arrangement with their employer. If you’re struggling to find a suitable job and know someone in a similar position, could you apply for a job share together? While it’s still not common place, job sharing is becoming more accepted by employers. The Civil Service, for example, states that it ‘positively promotes all forms of flexible working, including job sharing’ and offers guidance to managers on how to make it work. There are several job search agencies and websites specialising in roles that allow flexible working, including job shares. Try www.capabilityjane.com, www.workingmums.co.uk and www.flexibleworks.co.uk.

I have yo-yo dieted for years and even the thought of joining a gym made me feel anxious! On my first visit I was literally shaking but I too ok the plunge and committed to the 8 weekk ‘Find You’ programme. On my first day, I met thee most enthusiastic, passionate fitness coach, Liz, and an equally passionate, empathetic owner Sarah and it was easy to see that Fitness Republic was no ordinary gym! From week one I felt energised and motivated, by the team, and by others in the group. The early sessions ranged from circuits, HIIT and boxing but more importantly they were in a small group and away from the gym. Liz and Sarah continually supported us, especially around diet and were always there to answer any questions and advise us. I very quickly saw my body shape change and the amazing results I saw after just the first two weeks gave me the push I needed to continue. Evveryone at Fitness Republic, even other members, m made the time to get to know you and have a chat. Th he extended team are always around to encourage an nd support you and I have even benefited from th he in-house physio, Craig, who has resolved my hip problem! Within three weeks I felt comfortable en nough to go to a Pilates class on my own and ag gain, Sarah was there to introduce me to the class co oach and reassure my anxieties. Once the programme was at an end, I joined Fitness Reepublic. I have been converted by Sarah, Liz and th he whole team, and of course by my great results. W a total loss of just over 29” and over 1.5 stone With in weight, I couldn’t be happier. More importantly, I’m m on the road to a fitter and healthier me! I am a happy to go to the gym and classes alone an nd have made friends on the course who have en ncouraged and laughed with me, making th he ‘Find you’ journey a new way of life. Along with the other ladies, I am ready to o push forward knowing that Liz, Saarah and the whole team are there with me!

The New Year is here and Spring marathons are on the horizon! Many people start their marathon training from a standing start, some from 5km parkrun level and others after completing a half marathon. The perfect training would have each of us progressing our strength, fitness and endurance levels to Olympic levels and crossing the line just behind Mo Farah! However, for most runners, there’s the inevitable challenge of sprains, strains, spasms and injury which delay the training and can often prevent them taking part on the big day. At Physio Republic, we are offering a Run Screening service to start you off on your training program with an efficient and effective running technique and also a Marathon Package, which includes the Run Screening service, one sports

ac a e massage per month over a 3 month period and a Run Screening Review halfway through your training to make sure you’re on course for your [possible/probable/hopeful] podium finish! The Run Screening service is useful for any runner whether you’re new to running, you have a recurrent symptom whilst running or even if you want your running style assessed and refined, we can help you! We’ll analyse your individual biomechanics, your muscle lengths, strengths and weaknesses and see how you put it all together into a run. We’ll then put a plan together to help give you the best possible run technique for whatever your distance!

See our running reviews at www.physiorepublic.co.uk Book online or call in at Fitness Republic.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

ivil War model comes to s We were delighted to receive a model of the 17th century Civil War skirmish on Cotes Bridge, from the Friends of Loughborough Library. It will be going on display next to our model of Ashby Castle, as it is linked with Henry Hastings and the campaigns fought in this area. We have also received regular donations of good quality second-hand books, which means a small, but steady, income for us. Ashby and Coalville Lions have given us a small documentary archive. Our AV trustee has skilfully reproduced a large, colour copy of the Hastings’ Family Roll, which dates from Norman times through to the 19th century. Once framed, this will be on display in one of the galleries. Our first temporary exhibition of 2019 will feature Washington Shirley FRS,Fifth Earl Ferrers, a

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

M&S Ashby-de-la-Zouch

e ai

it t e commu it

With the New Year’s celebrations now over, I’ve been reflecting on the last twelve months which saw us open M&S Ashby-de-la-Zouch and begin our work with some fantastic community projects across the local area. As a store we supported numerous fundraising initiatives in 2018 and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues and our customers for all their continued support. Each year M&S store colleagues choose a charity to support and we partnered with ‘The Phoenix’, a local children’s foundation which enhances the lives of children who are living with an illness, disability or lack of opportunity. We worked closely with them throughout 2018, which included hosting a Halloween fancy-dress day, a cake bake sale and, more recently, providing raffle prizes for the charity’s annual Christmas raffle. In October, M&S celebrated its ninth year of partnership with Macmillan for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. As a new store, it was our first year fundraising for Macmillan, a charity close to many of my colleague’s hearts, so we made sure we went all out with a Disney-themed fancy dress day. We raised over £1,200 for Macmillan that day and I can’t thank our customers and the local community enough for their support. As well as country-wide initiatives, we strive to support local community activities and, earlier in 2018, a group of my team volunteered at Thorpe House Care home, based in Loughborough, to take part in a beach day for residents. It was a fantastic initiative which allowed residents who aren’t able to leave the care home to go back in time and re-live their cherished holiday memories. From fish and chips and ice-cream, to a classic sea-side favourite – a Punch and Judy show. It was really special to be able support such a good cause and we hope to be able to do something similar this year. We take great pride in our work with the community and look forward to continuing to support more local initiatives in 2019.

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

supporti

t e ommu it

Happy New Year to all our readers at Ashby Life – we hope you have had the most marvellous Christmas and wish you a peaceful, healthy and happy 2019. 2018 was a very successful year for AMTG, and we are very committed to supporting the community as well as enjoying ourselves putting on our wonderful shows. During 2018 we supported a number of charities, both local and national, and made donations to The Alzheimer’s Society, Rainbows Hospice, Burton Hospitals Prostrate Unit, Raising Health Coalville Stroke Unit as well as donations to the NSPCC, Marie Curie and the National Trust. We are proud to be able to commit to supporting these charities and will continue to do so. As Christmas 2018 approached, AMTG members visited Hood Court in Ashby and entertained the residents and staff. The programme for the first visit was songs from the shows, and it was lovely to have so many of our Juniors with us – there were very few dry eyes in the room when they sang their solos and group numbers. Our second visit was equally as successful, singing Christmas Carols. We were delighted to have so many

residents singing along with us, and again everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We would like to thank the residents and staff for their wonderful welcome – we had a lovely time with them all. We are very much looking forward to presenting Pirates of Penzance – Broadway version at the Ashby School Theatre from 9th to 13th April and our Box Office is now open. Please go to amtg.org.uk and follow the link to book online. Happy 2019!

POVERTY ACTION WEEK

overt

ctio Wee

Poverty Action Week takes place annually at the end of January, running from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th January this year. clothing, beds, cookers, mobility equipment, grants for utilities and, in emergencies, food, for those in need. This amazing charity supports people of all ages and all backgrounds who find themselves in financial hardship, including elderly and disabled people, those with a chronic illness, the victims of domestic violence, those affected by mental health problems and working families struggling to make ends meet.

It was launched in 2015 by Charity Link to highlight the fact that many local people don’t have the very basics in life. In fact, there are thousands of people living in need locally, including around 30,000 children in Leicestershire and 21,000 children in Northamptonshire. Charity Link supports over 5,000 vulnerable individuals and families each year across Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire. They find funding to provide essential items, including

Two key events are planned to help raise money in this year’s Poverty Action Week:

Wear a Funky Scarf Day – Friday 25th January The concept is simple; donate an amount of your choice or gain sponsorship for wearing your scarf for the day and by doing so help to support local people in hardship or crisis. You can choose a well-worn multicoloured scarf that your mum knit for you years ago, a feather boa, an animal hat & scarf combo, cravat, head-scarf, shawl or stole, just make sure you get involved! Why not get your school, club

or place of work involved? Wear a Funky Scarf Day is great for fundraising in school and for discussing the issues of local hardship. It’s also a fantastic way for local businesses and their teams to show support for the most vulnerable people in Leicestershire. Contact Rachel for a fundraising pack with all you need - leaflets, stickers, balloons etc. Email rachel. markham@charity-link.org or call 0116 222 2218.

The Charity Link Sleepover – Saturday 26th January

Following the success of the first ever Charity Link Sleepover last January which raised over £2,500 this event returns again bigger and better than ever! Join members of the Charity Link team as they

experience a little hardship for a night to help raise funds. Can you brave the cold from 8pm to 8am? No heating, no bed – could you do it? By taking part you will be helping to ensure that local people have the basic essentials that everyone deserves. Registration is £15 to cover administration (£10 for those aged 14 -16 years) with a fundraising target of £60+. Due to Charity Link’s unique way of working (for every £10 donated they can untap £50 from charitable trusts) that would help to provide a bed and bedding for two local people in need – pretty amazing! Contact Rachel to register at rachel.markham@charitylink.org or call 0116 222 2218.

YOUR WELLBEING

ivi

it a autism dia osis

Autism can be a challenge both for children and adults who are identified as being (or suspected as being) on the autism spectrum and for those who love and support them. Autistic brains are shown to work differently under stress and in fear, they operate differently around language, sensory information and around special interests. Autistic brains hit ‘overwhelm’ fast and sometimes they just never get the sensory messages offered by the environment. Being in loud and busy places, in an artificially lit room or being with people wearing patterned clothes or perfumed hygiene products can cause sensory overload. Many of us ‘pepper’ our communication with metaphors which is confusing and often hilarious to autistic people; imagine having a very literal grasp of language and being told it’s ‘raining cats and dogs’ or that there is ‘an elephant in the room’!! Consequently, autistic people can find non-autistic people to be very ‘tricky’ to understand and get along

with (and vice versa of course) and this can lead to strain on relationships, family life, school and work. It could be compared to running different operating system, think Apple and Windows rather than we’re ok and they’re not! At Futureminds, we offer counselling, psychotherapy, coaching and organisational consultancy with both schools, secure units and adult services for people identifying or identified as on the spectrum and to loved ones who need support. Futureminds are delighted to welcome Lucy Power who specializes in working with autism and sees clients in Ashby (see advert below).

• Individual, couple and family psychological therapies • Direct work with children and adolescents • Adoption issues (referred through local authority) • EMDR - accredited practitioner adult and child • CBT • Short term solution focussed therapy • Hypnotherapy • Life Coaching • Autism support • Therapy rooms available to rent for counselling or related activities

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

ariet is t e Spice o i e Ashby Dramatic Society are presenting a variety of different plays this year and we start 2019 with London Assurance, a comedy set in the 17th century written by Dion Boucicault. The play is a six act comedy that can be best described as a merry parade of wittily constructed skirmishes between love and money, town and country and nature and artifice. There are a plethora of characters who use false names and disguises to advance their affairs and courtships. If you like a costume drama with lots of laughs then this is the play for you. The play opens on 21st February and runs until Saturday 2nd March. Don’t delay ordering your tickets – it may be a sell out! Beatles and Jazz! What else is happening at our local theatre? We have regular jazz nights with top flight jazz bands and virtuoso musicians. On 5th January we have a special guest coming - Spats Langham and his Jazz Friends, but he is so popular that tickets were all sold in October!

2018 was another busy year for us at CMG; we lost and gained a new Practice Manager and want to thank the other managers for working hard to fill in the gaps whilst we were without a PM; three of our apprentices have become permanent members of staff and we have taken on a new apprentice. We have some new faces in Reception and we are delighted to welcome Anne back into the fold. We also welcomed Dr Liz, Sonia Grainger and Sue Clough to our Clinical Team. Finally, we have some exciting plans for 2019 and will publish details in the coming months. Once again we want to thank our PPG for their continued support throughout last year. They are working on a Patient Questionnaire for next month. Members of the PPG will be in Reception asking patients to complete the questionnaire and we would be grateful if as many patients as possible could complete it as we take the feedback very seriously. You will also be able to find the questionnaire on our website should you wish to complete and hand into Reception.

TECHNOLOGY

ec or t e e If human beings were any good at keeping New Year’s resolutions, the gyms would be full to bursting and the streets full of joggers all year round, not just for the first few weeks. Tech can’t transform you from couch potato to body beautiful, but it can keep you focused on the goal. The good news is that you might already have most of what you need in your smartphone. Many modern smartphones contain the sensors to track all kinds of exercise apart from (obviously) swimming. If your device has GPS it can track your running or cycling, butt even if it doesn’t it can usuaally track your steps and d distance. In some cases they can also track you ur elevation and tell you how many flights of stairs you’ve climbed. Both Apple and Google havve their own fitness trackking apps in the form of Activity and Google Fit respeectively, but some of the best fitness tracking apps are by third parties. Nike Training Club is a great workout app, while Runkeeper and Strava are brilliant. It’s not just about exercising, of course. Healthy eating can make a big difference to your energy levels and your body shape. MyFitnessPal enables you to track what your food intake to get an insight into your personal nutrition. The app is

66

ou free, although some of its more advanced features require a month hly subscription. That’s someething to check with health and d fitness apps generally: apps that appear to be free are often very limited in what they can do, and some subscription plans are frighteningly expensive. If you do decide to get some hardware, even that needn’t cost a fortune. Yes, the latest Apple Watch is pretty expensive at £399-plus, but you can get a perfectly good runner’s watch like the TomTom Runner 3 or Garmin Forerunner 35 for about £99; if all you want to track is your heart rate, you can get a heart rate monitoring watch from Decathlon for £15.99. Even GPS watches are much more affordable: the Kalenji Onmove 220 GPS Watch is currently £69.99. Don’t forget the second-hand market, either. At the time of writing you could get an Apple Watch Series 3 GPS Nike+ watch, a great smartwatch, for £229.99 on eBay. That’s a pretty good discount on the usual RRP of £359. If you do have a smartwatch, there are some excellent fitness apps for those too. The Apple Watch is paarticularly blessed with endless activity trackers. We like Carrot Fit, which is available for iPhone as well as Apple Watch. Unusually where other apps offeer positive reinforcement, Carrot is badtem mpered, judgmental and d deliberately offeensive. If you havve a dark sense of humour though it’s a lot of fun.

ON THE BEAT

i

e ore ou dial

Leicestershire Police has launched a new campaign asking people to think before dialling 999 in a bid to reduce improper use of the emergency number. Superintendent Richard Ward who leads the contact management centre at force headquarters, said: “…999 is for emergencies only and should never be dialled for anything other than this. An emergency is when a serious crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened. Every moment that is spent dealing with an inappropriate emergency call, means those with real emergencies may experience a delay in getting through, which could put lives at risk. So our message is ‘Think before you dial 999’.” Issues which should be reported to partner agencies include anti-social behaviour such as fly tipping, on-going noise nuisance, dog fouling, all of which should be reported to your local authority. Similarly, abandoned vehicles, should be reported to the council, unless they are causing an obstruction or danger, or they are believed stolen. Untaxed vehicles should be reported to the DVLA.

Lord Willy Bach, Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, added: “Using 999 inappropriately can cost lives. It’s as simple as that. “We have gone to some lengths to offer a variety of different ways to contact the police when it’s not an emergency and I urge people to use the most convenient method for them. But most importantly, I ask that they only use the 999 number in real emergencies.” Non-emergency crime can be reported via 101 or online at www.leics.police.uk PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

Foot Files: CHILBLAINS Brrrr with the possibility of colder temperatures on the way chilblains are a real risk this time of year! WHAT ARE CHILBLAINS? Chilblains are small, itchy and red swellings that can blister and cause the skin to break. Chilblains occur as a reaction to cold temperatures, normally upon the ends of the toes. People with poor circulation or conditions such as Raynaud’s syndrome are at greater risk of developing a chilblain. PERFECT FEET TIPS TO AVOID CHILBLAINS • Keep feet as warm and dry as possible, wear thick socks and well-fitted shoes. • Avoid heating feet next to radiators or fires, as this will make the condition worse.

• Use your own body heat or if your feeling naughty somebody else’s! This will gradually warm your feet up. • Moisturise skin daily. • Keep active to improve circulation. • Reduce or stop Nicotine consumption as Nicotine can reduce circulation to toes. • Heat retaining insoles made from Plastazote can be helpful keeping feet warm. • Contact your local Chiropodist for further help or advice.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

irst ooti I wonder how many of you have been ‘firstfooting’ since 2019 began? First-footing, of course, is an old Scottish tradition, and means being the first person to cross the threshold of the house in the New Year. One of our delights in 2018 was watching the effect our new Community Heritage building had on anyone crossing its threshold for the first time. If you haven’t already been, do come and take a ‘firstfoot’ with us on Saturday and Wednesday mornings – if you need further enticement, we have good coffee and yummy cake! Those who have already crossed our threshold tend to come back, inviting old friends, making new friends, enjoying our variety of activities, such as playing chess or scrabble, adding a few pieces to our jigsaw puzzle, bringing along their own knitting, crochet or craft project to work on, or simply enjoying the chance to chat in lovely surroundings. We start back on 9th January, 10.30am to 12.30pm. We had lots of first-footers at our December Heritage Talk, as well as many who have been before, and January’s talk looks like being an excellent evening

too, when popular speaker Peter Liddle returns to talk about the archaeology of the Civil War in Leicestershire and Ashby de la Zouch. It will even include the Civil War finds discovered under your feet in what is now our main hall. Make sure you step out in good time on Monday 7th January to get a seat before the 7.30 pm start! Happy New Year from everyone at St Helen’s Church and Community Heritage Centre.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

et i t e li t January can be a tricky month in terms of mental health. The sparkle and magic of Christmas is over and lots of people find themselves suffering from SAD (seasonal affective disorder). This is thought to be caused in part by a lack of sunlight and causes symptoms similar to depression. It’s not any wonder really, as when the sun shines life feels better, problems smaller and it’s easier to see the upside. One way to try and improve your mood is to get more sunshine in your life. Open your curtains and blinds, cut back overhanging trees or hedges, if the sun is shining go outside – have a walk, take your cup of tea outside and drink it in the garden, if you can’t get outside, move your chair so you sit near a

window. Basically channel your inner sunflower and lift your face to the sun! Sunlight is literally a light-giver; it’s what makes the plants grow and from that all life on earth is sustained. It’s no surprise then that God describes his son as the ‘light of the world’ as he too brings life to the whole world. Jesus too can make life feel better, put our problems in context and help us see the hope that he brings. So perhaps this January, while we’re soaking up the weak winter rays, we could explore the more consistent light source of Jesus who has promised to bring light into our dark world, both for us on a personal level but also for our world as a whole. THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Now Christmas is over, The Conservation Volunteers will be starting a season of hedge laying in The National Forest. This ancient skill involves cutting hedge plants halfway through and bending them over to form a barrier impenetrable to stock. Stakes, traditionally of hazel, support the plants to give strength, and a woven hazel top ties the whole thing together. A well laid hedge looks very smart, as you can see by the pictures. Traditionally hedges were laid to ensure the hedge stayed thick, to keep your cattle out of the neighbour’s field. Laying encourages plants to shoot from the base, which prolongs the life of the hedge. It was also a useful sustainable source of smaller firewood. Today hedges are laid for all these reasons, but for conservation too. A hedge which is trimmed every year with a tractor and flail will never produce much cover or food for wildlife. A hedge which is left to grow up for a time, and laid every, let us say, 15 years, will have periods where the hedge is tall and bushy,

full of berries and birds’ nests. Every 15 years the cycle will start again, preventing the hedge growing past this stage into old age and decay. The ideal situation is, of course, to lay hedges on a farm in sequence so wildlife cover is always there. If you would like to join us and try something new for free, contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

The Bleeding Heart is a plant which has outstanding heart shaped flowers that appear to be bleeding. It originates from China and plant collectors introduced it to the west from 1842 following a Treaty. Many plants were in fact smuggled out from China by plant collectors and most notably at this time one Robert Fortune would disguise himself as Chinese with a false black pigtail no less! China was at this point in time known then as the ‘central flowery land’. Dicentra is hardy, it grows in partial shade and sun, so despite its delicate and extraordinary flowers it is quite a common site in gardens. Flowering time is late spring and early summer. The flowers hang from graceful arching stems. These plants have brittle roots and do not like being disturbed so be sure to place these plants carefully initally so you don’t have to move them. Dicentra is a perennial, which means the flowers and leaves will come back each year. As you might imagine with such unusual and exquisitely shaped flowers there are various meanings associated with love and emotion. Most blooms are magenta pink or bright red and these flowers are said to represent a deep and passionate love. In china where the plant originates from it is said to represent spurned or rejected love. The white bleeding heart is also widely available and is said to be a symbol of purity and innocence. Another secret about this flower is that if you turn the flower upside down, the narrow petals take the form of a locket which is the source of other romantic names for this plant such as ‘lady –in –thebath’ and ‘lady locket’.

The flower actually consists of a flattish pair of pink outerr petals, each with a spur at its base (the two petals are the two o halves of the heart), with narrow inner petals projecting from between the halves. The botanic name, from the Greek, describes the flower as di (meaning ‘two’) and kendron (‘spur’). In Latin ‘spectablis’ means ‘remarkable’, which is what it is. The correct Latin name is Lamprocapnos spectablis but it is still widely known under its old name of Dicentra spectablis. Dicentra will grow in clay and heavy soil as well as well drained and light soil. The height is usually 60cm and the spread about 45cm. If you don’t have much room in your borders or you only have a courtyard or balcony then you can grow Dicentra perfectly well in a nice pot. Perhaps this plant would be a thought for Valentine’s Day.

ASHBY WRITERS CLUB

ac t e oad

by Monica Wakefield

It was always this time of year when he appeared. Released maybe, like cattle from their winter keep but there was little ‘spring’ in his old legs. White hair and grey stubble still showed some signs of a grudging festive trim and his buckled trilby faced ‘the road’ with a jauntiness that left his weary boots to think life had been a little unfair. His deep bull roar was indecipherable but instantly recognisable causing doors and kitchen curtains up and down the street to silently close on him. This was a nice street with well kept gardens and fathers who worked hard to put food on their tables. No! He was an idle good for nothing with a sack on his back big enough to take a small child. He continued undeterred, calling in that low practiced voice, never lifting his eyes to the hostile blankness of the manicured privet hedges or the functional, post war properties that stood shoulder to shoulder blocking his way. The steepness slowed his pace further, his efforts futile. In the turning bay at the top he leant on the white stucco wall under the lamppost where youths gathered, planning adventures, on dark winter nights. Chances are

he’d done the same as a lad. Full of ideas and assumptions in those days before whatever it was happened that set him on this endless road. Did he envy them their neat homes and coldness of spirit, I think not and just maybe the tone of his call hardened a little. The effort was less going back down the street towards the open fields. The houses stood back a step and let the sky brighten to warm his back through the heavy greatcoat. The first friendly gesture of the day. Then, as he knew she would, the lady from No 12 was placing a steaming hot mug on her gate post, its contents would have been simmering on the kitchen range for just such an emergency. She was reliable. Warmed by the sun and the hospitality old Jack was soon off into the wide blue yonder. No harm to anyone. The Ashby Writers’ Club meet at 7.30pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Congregational Church Hall, Kilwardby Street. Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

MORE TAKING OUT PROTECTION POLICIES AS HEALTH CONSCIOUSNESS RISES Life is full of twists and turns, some of them good, others not so good.

in new business, up 35.1% in the first half of 2018 compared with the first half of 2017i.

Protection policies are one of the best ways of ensuring your family is provided for financially, if unexpected and unwelcome events should happen. Policies can pay out lump-sums or provide an income to ease the financial burden at a difficult time.

Insurers believe that this rise is due, in part, to greater health consciousness and a better understanding of the part that protection policies can play in keeping a roof over a family’s head and ensuring that household bills can still be paid if death or illness were to strike.

It seems that the message that it’s important to have the right type of protection policy in place is being listened to. Recent data from financial software company IRESS, shows a positive trend in the sale of protection products in the first six months of 2018. Life term insurance and Income Protection saw the largest year on year increase

With so many different types of policy available it can be hard to know which one is right for your circumstances and offers the best value for money, so it makes sense to get advice that will help you make the right choice for your family circumstances. Please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020. i) Iress, 2018

PET’S CORNER

o to eep our pets arm t is i ter As winter deepens and the weather starts to bite, it’s important to make sure our pets are warm and comfortable to avoid illness and distress. Even those animals with thick, furry coats are susceptible to the cold, so what can we do to help our dogs, cats, and rabbits stay warm this winter? Keeping your dog warm and cosy A warm dog coat offers protection from the winter cold, and as temperatures drop, even dogs with the thickest fur will benefit from the extra insulation when exercising or playing outside. A fleece-lined inner layer with a waterproof outer is a good choice, particularly if the two layers can be detached and used individually as the weather dictates. Making sure your cat is warm this winter It’s more difficult to ensure your cat is warm in the winter given their independent nature, but they have a natural inclination to find warm places. That’s why it’s advisable to provide a cosy shelter in your garden, to reduce the likelihood of them sitting underneath cars or in other warm but dangerous places.

Protecting your rabbit from the worst of the winter weather If your rabbit is spending the winter in an outdoor hutch, you’ll need to provide additional protection from the elements. Siting their hutch away from the cold winds and driving rain, providing extra bedding, covering the hutch with a blanket and their run/outdoor area with tarpaulin, will all help to keep them healthy and safe.

BOOK REVIEWS

eat t e i ter lues

This month, we’re focusing on books to make you laugh, cry, write and reflect your way out of the winter blues. How to be Famous Caitlin Moran Snort-your-tea-out-ofyour-nose-funny, How to be Famous centres around 19-year-old Johanna Morrigan aka the writer Dolly Wilde. It’s 1995, Britpop has taken over the music scene and there’s no better place to be than London. Until, that is, Johanna finds herself the subject of malicious gossip and has to decide whether to flee or fight back.

Why Mummy Drinks: The Journal Gill Sims Frazzled parents everywhere will find something to relate to in Why Mummy Drinks. Humorous reflections on parenting in the modern world precede spaces to jot down your own thoughts each day. If you like journals (and laughing), and have ever wondered whether you should just record yourself shouting ‘Teeth! Hair! Shoes! Hurry up!’ to save having to speak in the morning, this book is for you.

The Accidental Memoir Eve Makis and Anthony Chopper If you’ve ever thought about capturing moments of your life using the written word but have no idea where to start, you need this book. Prompts range from ‘Is there a mystery in your family? A story rarely spoken about?’ to ‘What posters did you have on your bedroom wall?’ and ‘Write a letter to your younger self.’ There are also extracts from other memoirs, writing tips and more.

Down to Earth Monty Don One of the easiest ways to lift your spirits is to get out into nature. There are few things more satisfying than growing something yourself and spring is just around the corner. Down to Earth is a useful book for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. It doesn’t matter whether you have acres of land or a tiny courtyard, you’ll find advice, tips and inspiration on everything from garden design and plant choice to pest control.

Slow Gizzi Erskine Comfort eating doesn’t have to mean chocolate, shop-bought pies and a vat of ice cream. It can mean taking the time to show yourself some self-care by preparing delicious, wholesome, hearty dishes. Slow has plenty of recipes to help you do just that, from warming winter stews to slow-roasted meats and decadent desserts. They’re all written in Gizzi’s usual easy, unaffected style. Salt Beef Brisket anyone? Or Lemon Sherbet Meringue Pie? Yum.

RECIPE

a WITH doori lam NAAN A pot of yogurt and a few spices can transform lamb steaks into a delicious spicy supper. If you prefer, serve with pilau rice or on a bed of spiced couscous. YOU WILL NEED 4 large lamb steaks 6 tbsp natural yoghurt 2cm piece root ginger 2 garlic cloves 2 tsp each garam masala and ground cumin 1 tsp each ground coriander and chilli powder 1 tbsp lemon juice 4 naan breads Rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber

METHOD 1. Place the lamb steaks in a shallow dish. Mix together the yoghurt, ginger, garlic, spices and lemon juice and add 1/2 tsp salt and some freshly ground black pepper. Spread over the steaks. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 2-3 hours (or overnight). 2. Grill the marinated steaks under a preheated medium grill for 6-8 minutes on each side until just cooked and lightly charred in places. Cover the cooked steaks and leave to rest for 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, sprinkle the naan breads lightly with water and heat under the grill for 2-3 minutes. Top with rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber. Slice the steaks and pile on top of the salad. Serve with the extra yogurt on the side and mango chutney, if liked.

TOP TIP To make tandoori fish, replace the lamb steaks with 4 salmon fillets. Spread the marinade over the fillets and leave for 1-2 hours. Bake the fish at 200C/fan 180C/ gas mark 6 for 20-25 minutes until just cooked. 120

CHESS PUZZLE

laac too pla lac laa a d i The hardest thing in any sport is to win a won game, and chess is no different. An illustration comes from the first game of the recent world chess championship between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. It is Carlsen, who has the black pieces, to play. There is a winning move. Can you find it, and explain why it is winning for black? In the game Carlsen did not play the best move here, and the game was drawn. If your New Year’s resolution is to play more chess, why not join us at the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby, every Thursday at 7.30pm. Juniors, beginners, and experts are all welcome. Look us up at www.ashbychess.com for more details and team news. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
