to the June issue. As the warmer weatther arriives the eveniings and d weekends seemed to be filled with the sound of people mowing their lawns and working in their gardens. The longer days also inspire me to tackle those jobs in the house I’ve been putting off for too long.

Some jobs are best carried out by a professional however and luckily here at Ashby Life we get to know all types of local experts whether we need a plumber, decorator, plasterer or handyman, oven or carpet cleaner. And of course if you prefer to spend your time in the garden relaxing then we have a wide selection of gardeners to mow your lawn, weed your borders or completely redesign your space. Now that sounds like a better idea to me!

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

We have lots of news and details of upcoming events to share with you this month… TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Congratulations to Chris Tandy who was awarded the Ashby de la Zouch Town Council Civic Award 2018 by the Town Mayor, Councillor Roger Bayliss, at the annual Civic Dinner on Friday 12th April. Chris has been a Chris Tandy, winner of the life-long resident 2018 Ashby Civic Award in Ashby, involving himself and his family in numerous groups and activities in the town organisations including the Rotary Club, Ashby History Society and the Civic Society. The award recognises his contribution to the town.

A programme of town centre improvements will be taking place over the remainder of the year led by Stuart Benson. The work was identified as part of the Ashby Project and will include the replacement of bins, benches, information and notice boards with a focus on improving Market Street.

Following on from the local elections on 2nd May a new town council is now in place and considering their programme for the next four years. There was a good turnout from voters in Ashby and we would like to thank all of you who took the time to come along and vote on the day.

UPCOMING EVENTS A number of events will take place over the summer - a brand new addition to the schedule will be the first ever Ashby Scooter & Music Festival ’Ride to the Castle’ which will take place on Saturday 6th July.

In May we also welcomed on board a new Mayor; Councillor Graham Allman. Graham has been an elected member of the Town Council for over twenty years and was previously appointed Mayor & Chairman of the Council 2009/10 and Chairman of NWLeics District Council 2014/15. He is also a family man, all 4 of his children went to school here in Ashby and together they have raised many

Scooters and their riders from across the UK will be gathering at Ivanhoe College. The awards show will begin from noon with awards ranging from best bike to furthest travelled being presented by the new Mayor and music courtesy of Radar Events.

thousands of pounds for local good causes. In other news, good progress is being made with securing ownership of Ashby Bath Grounds and we are hopeful to get to a position where they will finally be owned by the people of the town. Consultation on the draft Blackfordby Neighbourhood Plan ends on Monday 24th June. For more details on how to have your say on the future of Blackfordby see page 111.

Over on Market Street a selection of scooters and a winner’s enclosure will be positioned outside Boots for viewing. All licensed venues in the town will be joining in the event, from noon till late, with either live bands or a DJ set to celebrate the era of MOD, SKA and Northern Soul. For more details and a full programme of events for the day search for Ride to the Castle on Facebook. Ashby’s new Mayor; Councillor Graham Allman

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

OLD SCHOOL ROOM BLACKFORDBY Built in the year 1843 on land given by the Joyce family of Blackfordby Hall, the Elementary school served for forty six years as the place of education for Blackfordby children aged four to thirteen years. With a growing population the small one-room building was too small and in 1889 a new much larger school was completed. The young headmaster, Mr. Jenkins, walked his charges who carried their slates, from the Old School by the spring up the hill to the new purpose-built school situated on high ground which overlooks the village. For the last hundred and thirty years the Old School has been available for village folk to use and has been managed by a panel of trustees. In the early 1900’s Mr. Jenkins gave evening classes in the Old School and was aided in this by the use of a magic lantern. In the 1920’s and 1930’s the Old School was called The Institute and was the venue for a village club where billiards was a popular pastime. Anyone could hire the Old School for one-off events such as a wedding reception, a W.I. meeting, a dance or a party and every year the Garden Society held their garden produce show th here.

14

After the opening of Blackfordby Village Hall in 1974 the Old School was no longer needed as an events venue but it became the home for the Youth Club. When it ceased to function in 2018 the new panel of trustees decided that the venerable Old School would not fall into disrepair and with much energy they have made many improvements. The building has been re-named as The Blackfordby Old School Room and work to improve its facilities is an ongoing challenge. Already, new tables and chairs have been bought, it has been re-wired and re-decorated. Subject to planning, the next phase will see a new extension which will incorporate a new kitchen, a disabled persons’ toilet and a safe storage area. The Old School Room is ideal for small group activities and already it is the venue for the following… • Folk \ Blues musical evenings (monthly) • Art group (weekly) • Sewing classes (weekly) • Wildlife group (monthly) • Guitar classes (fortnightly) • Spring and Christmas fairs • Open Gardens Venue • Guest speakers, various topics • Book sales (twice per year) The cost to hire The Old School Room is £10 per hour. For further information on this, or to find out about any of the classes, contact Katherine Moore on 07878 771 419.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS with PC Clinic

WIRELESS WOES For those of you who are avvid readers of Ashby Life, you may recall we did an article on wireless technology and im mproving signals around the house back in 2017. Whilst many of our previous tips relating to Wireless Extenders and Repeaaters are still perfectly valid, there’s also a new techn nology available. Mainstream internet providerrs are now offering a “complete wi-fi” solution, and some ISP’s are trialling th his new technology too. However, wh hat they’re offering is a little unusual in our opinion, and it costs you even more on n your monthly bill to have it. We are talking about Mesh Networks. This is the new standard in wireless technology and works by linking several “nodes” or Wi-Fi units together to create a mesh of wireless between them all. This improves coverage and allows you to roam around freely (with most devices) and it will jump onto the strongest node. If one drops or fails, the remaining ones take over. It gets interesting here because what some ISP’s are doing is offering this type of solution, but are only supplying a single unit. Therefore, you’re only creating a link with their router and the additional node – not a true mesh system. Yes, you can add more to it, but this comes at an even greater cost. You can get all these benefits with an “off the shelf” solution which would work with any router regardless of who your internet provider is. It’s

controlled by your smartphone, and is super easy to install – although we can do this for you, and would recommend it for bigger networks. Here at PC Clinic we’ve installed several of these to homes where traditional Wi-Fi doesn’t cut it, such as traditional stone built houses, cottages, large houses etc. Most recently we setup a mesh consisting of 5 nodes for a client in Worthington – the results have been wholly positive, and they’re now enjoying faster transfer speeds and the ability to roam their home with no dropouts in connection. To find out more about these wonderful new devices, come in and see us for a friendly chat and see our demonstration kit in action. We are sure to have a solution available for you at your local Which? Trusted Trader computer store in Huntingdon Court.

The venue is also home to Charnwood Forest Alpacas who will be offering taster experiences over the weekend to get up close to the resident alpacas and other animals.

Formerly the Ashby & Willesley Vintage Festival held at Moira Furnace, Ashby Steam moved to its new venue last year. Amazingly, this annual event is organised by a committee of just five volunteers and unsurprisingly, the team were delighted to be named finalists in not one but two categories for the Leicestershire Promotions 2018 Tourism and Hospitality Awards. This year’s Ashby Steam takes place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. Plus, shortly after 5pm on Saturday 22nd June the public can line the streets to

ASHBY LIBRARY NEWS

ASHBY LIBRARY IS SMART Ashby Library recently switched over to become a ‘smart library’ but what does this actually mean and how will it affect the way we use our local library? Nicola, Communications Officer at Leicestershire County Council explains; ‘Following a successful trial, 14 libraries across the county are now smart libraries, offering longer opening hours and providing a greater choice when planning a visit. Smart library arrangements allow members who have registered for self-access to scan their library card to access the building, while staff are not on site. Residents wishing to use this service will need to contact their nearest smart library or visit www.leicestershire.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/ libraries/smart-library-induction to arrange an induction and register for self-access. Services available include borrowing, returning and renewing books, using the public computers and wifi, and printing and copying facilities. Groups who

have signed up are also able to use the space during selfaccess hours.’ Richard Blunt, cabinet member for libraries at Leicestershire County Council, said: “Self-access technology means that our libraries will be open for longer, making them more accessible for even more residents, who may not have been able to visit during previous opening hours. “I would encourage people to register for a Smart Library induction and see how they can make the most of their local library and its services.” For details of changes to opening hours see www.leicestershire.gov.uk/find-a-library More information about smart libraries can be found on the Leicestershire Libraries website: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/smart-libraries

LOCAL AUTHOR COMPETITION

WIN A COPY OF KATE’S NEW BOOK! Local author Kate Mallinder is celebrating the publication of her debut book, Summer of No Regrets, a feel-good contemporary novel for teens. It follows four sixteen year old friends through the summer after their GCSEs. Inspired by Hetal’s Nani, they all set out to have a regret-free summer, which means different things for each of them. Sasha decides to stay with her father who she hasn’t seen for years, Hetal takes her place at science camp while Nell resolves not to be kept safe at home by her mother. And fostered Cam searches for her birth father. But as the summer goes on, their choices become more difficult, even dangerous, and the four friends find that they need each other more than ever before. The central idea in the book is one of no regrets – living life outside of your comfort zone and doing things that scare you. Kate says this inspiration came from her own attitude to writing. While her main writing love has always been for children, you may have seen one of her short films shot by Pudding Bag Productions, or one of her short plays put on at the Venture Theatre. These were all written, says Kate, with a ‘you don’t know until you try it’ view about life in general, and writing in particular. Summer of No Regrets has received some glittering

reviewss and has been recommended by The Reading Agency as a Top Ten Young Adult Summer Read. After a sold out launch event at Waterstones in Birmingham, Kate has been touring the country, appearing at various literary festivals, with more planned over the summer. This will include a visit to Ashby library on Saturday 22nd June at 10.30am where Kate will be talking about Summer of No Regrets and answering questions, with books for sale and a signing. (Please pre-book your space with the Library). Her book is available from Amazon, Waterstones, Hive, Foyles or any independent bookshop and is published by Firefly Press. Copies are also available in Ashby Library. Find out more about Kate on Twitter: @KateMallinder or check out her website: www.KateMallinder.co.uk

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

APRIL IN PARIS IN ASHBY!

Ashby Dramatic Society have put on plays by John Godber several times in the past but April in Paris is an interesting choice. The play concerns the marriage of a couple who bicker about almost everything. Al and Bet live a dull, predictable life until Bet wins a competition which allows them to go off to Paris for a complete change.

Will there be romance? Will the change of routine save their marriage? Can either of them become different people and bring some fulfillment to a moribund life? Like most plays by John Godber the script is peppered with humour and witty observations. John Godber has written many well known plays including Bouncers, Happy Families, Teechers, Perfect Pitch and Up and Under. He started life as a drama teacher and became so successful that he even raised the money for a new theatre in Hull. A John Godber play is guaranteed to make you laugh and look at life in a different way. This play replaces Shirley Valentine, which was withdrawn due to licensing difficulties. Jim Joyce will be directing April in Paris - an ideal summer production for those going to Europe for their holidays! The play takes place at the Venture Theatre from Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29nd June. Tickets cost £9 and are available from Ashby Tourist Information (01530 411 767) or can be booked online at ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk.

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

OUTSTANDING REVIEWS FOR PIRATES OF PENZANCE! They say you are only as good as your last show, and we think the huge number of rave reviews say it all! Audiences were treated to great performances each night. With a much smaller group than usual, we brought our audiences the most polished production, everybody shone, and of course with the smaller cast there were absolutely no hiding places. Apart from behind the gravestones and rocks of course! While it is great to hear tributes from our friends and family, it is also lovely to read reviews from people who contacted us through our website or on social media. We don’t have enough room to publish them all, and so offer a small selection of the praise we received.

“Great entertainment and fun …. What fantastic value too and with such outstanding performances – why go to the West End?” “What a wonderful evening ..... such a high quality performance …. good to see the younger generation are getting involved and enjoying it too…”

“massive congratulations to all performers, orchestra, backstage and tech crews for an incredible show last night ….very professional! “The whole performance was so magnificently professional ….” “…. would not have imagined that an amateur production could be so good!” We are very pleased to have entertained our lovely audiences so well and look forward to seeing them at The King and I in April 2020.

Don’t forget we are always looking to welcome new members – send an email to enquiries@ amtg.org.uk and come and join the fun!

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

PLANNING YOUR PENSION IN THE NEW WORLD OF WORK Not long ago, work meant a 9-to-5 role, probably spent with the same employer and ending abruptly when you reached retirement age. Things are very different today. People tend to move jobs more frequently and many more of us are selfemployed, thanks to the rise of the gig economy. Those past State Pension age are much more likely to still be in employment, perhaps choosing to work less hours or even embark on a new career. Equally, the change in pension rules that came into effect in 2015 means that if you want to retire at 55, you can do so. Thanks also to strides in modern medicine, many can look forward to a retirement that could last a good few decades. TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR FUTURE Whatever your stage of working life, we believe it’s never been as important as it is now, to take professional advice about your pension. To enjoy a comfortable retirement, especially if you plan to retire early, you need to have saved enough to make this a reality. The tax breaks available on pension contributions (subject to the Annual and Lifetime Allowances) act as

a clear incentive to save as much as you can comfortably afford. KNOW YOUR NUMBERS Reviewing your pension arrangements with us will help keep your plans on track, as will drawing up a budget of your likely income needs in retirement. Getting a State Pension forecast makes sense too. PLANS TO MATCH YOUR NEEDS Pension plans come in various forms to suit the needs of different types of worker, from the basic State Pension to Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs), personal or private pensions, and workplace pensions schemes, to name but a few.

The sooner you start your pension, the longer your money will have to grow. If you’re selfemployed, an employee, work part-time, run your own business or have accumulated pension pots with past employers, we can offer you the advice you need. If you haven’t looked at your pension plan recently, then please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020, to arrange a review.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

CHOOSING TO CARE FOR OUR PLANET There’s been a lot of public attention on the issues of pollution and climate change recently. Ever since David Attenborough and the BBC Blue Planet II programme highlighted the enormous global problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, many people have tried to change their lifestyle and use less plastic. Public opinion appears to be coming around to the idea that we do face a climate crisis caused by human activity. The Bible establishes from the very first verse that the Earth is God’s creation. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth” declares Genesis Ch 1vs1. We’re not told how or when God created the universe. We are told however that

62

he filled it with water and land, plants and trees, birds, fish and animals and ultimately, people. The prophet Isaiah tells us that God made the Earth to be inhabited by His creation; “…the Lord, who created the heavens… who formed the Earth and made it… He established it; He did not create it empty, He formed it to be inhabited.” God won’t allow mankind to utterly destroy the Earth, but it is our responsibility to care for it. We can all make positive choices about our impact on the environment to help maintain the planet that God has given us to live on, alongside the rest of His creation. ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

FLAGSTAFF PILGRIMAGE Who doesn’t love The Proclaimers Song, ‘I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more’ – but have you ever wondered what kind of a commitment you’d be entering into if someone took you up on your offer of walking a thousand miles to fall down at their door?

We’re down from 500 miles to 10 … but if even that seems a little more than you might like, the day is designed for you to dip in and out as you wish. The Proclaimers’ song’s proper title is ‘I’m Gonna Be’, and here are the places we’re gonna be that day:

Google has been no help answering this important question - estimates for walking 500 miles varied from 6 days to 34 days! It appears that struggling with the maths could be enough to make you weary let alone doing the walking. Suffice to say it will take a big chunk of your annual leave, so you would have to hope to be travelling through scenic countryside en route.

• Gather at St Matthew’s, Worthington, ready to set off at 9am

In fact you might wish to be walking through the wonderful countryside betw ween here and Breedon on the Hill, perhap ps via Coleorton, and possibly including a me eander to Staunton Harold, Worthington and lovvely little Isley Walton.

• Arrive at St Mary’s & St Hardulph’s, Breedon on the Hill for coffee, 10ish to 11ish. • Enjoy a picnic lunch at Staunton Harold from approximately 12.15pm • Arrive back in Ashby at 3pm So why not put your best foot forward and join in!

And the good news is, such a walk is a mere 10 miles and can be fitted in between 9am and 3pm on the same day. We know because we’ve done it before, and we enjoyed it so much we thought we’d do it again - on Saturdaay June 8th to be precise. We’ll visit five of the seven churches within the Flagstaff Family of Churches to which St Helen’s and Holy Trinity belong.

IN YOUR GARDEN

SHELTER - A WALLED GARDEN On Holy Island in Northumberland reached by a tidal causeway I was enjoying walking and taking in the wonders of the coastline and breathtaking scenery. I was however drawn like a magnet to the sight of a garden. It was a walled garden and an absolute treasure in so many ways. It seemed to be randomly placed in a windswept field, uninhabited by trees and only hardy breeds of sheep were visible residents. The little garden I had discovered was also just below Lindisfarne Castle. To my joy the garden layout of the garden was designed by architect Edwin Lutyens in 1906 and later Gertrude Jekyll made a planting plan for it. The garden was commissioned at this time by the then new owners who had Lindisfarne Castle converted for their holiday home. The brief for the garden was to ‘delight the summer visitors’. The plants featured flowers of bright colours and scents. Many of the plants specified in Jekyll’s design are still used in the garden today because The National Trust restored the garden to the original planting plan in 2003. The garden is so very windswept that if it wasn’t for the shelter that the walls provide the garden would not survive. By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 readily available in garden centres. The Jekyll garden also has espalier fruit trees taking advantage of the sunny facing walls, and annuals such as sweet peas that give vibrant colours contrasts and sweet summer scents. Additionally raised vegetable and salad beds make for a working garden that produces seasonal food. Prior to the commissioning of the garden for the purpose of ‘delighting visitors’ the site had the more serious use of growing food. This was particularly so for the many years when there were soldiers occupying Lindisfarne Castle and their appetites needed satisfying. A walled garden of course gives a sense of retreat and privacy, but also for the growing of the plants it’s not just shelter from the wind that the walls provide. Inside a walled garden the temperatures are usually a few degrees warmer than outside, thus allowing more tender plants to survive and flourish. Traditionally kitchen gardens are enclosed by walls for this very reason. Locally Calke Abbey is an excellent example of a walled kitchen garden. Calke kitchen garden is restored now to its formal glory, it is producing a heart warming display of fruit salad and vegetables to inspire you - take a look, no need to go all the way to Lindisfarne.

June is a peaceful time of year to wander into the wider estate and discover something you’ve never seen before on a free guided walk. Calke’s knowledgeable park guides set off every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am and 2pm from outside the Ticket Office – they’ll take you to areas that aren’t normally open to the public and share some great stories about the estate. If you prefer to wander at your own pace, look out for seasonal highlights such as orchids in the Limeyards, a fragrant sweet pea tunnel in the gardens and wildflowers in the meadows. Check out the website to find downloadable trails and summer highlights. If you’re looking further ahead to the height of summer, keep an eye out for Calke Explore, a new ‘outdoor hub’ at Calke Abbey opening in July 2019. FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH! Fitness Republic’s Founder, Simon Pellecchia, faces some tough questions…

We thought we’d have a bit of fun in this month’s blog so we’ve let Marcus, one of our resident fitness team members, interview owner Simon on all aspects of health and fitness. Ok Simon…let’s go! What inspired you to establish Fitness Republic? I wanted to create a place that would make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Also, a place that I would like to train at! I started the gym 9 years ago, and since then, I’m proud to say, it has grown into my vision. Fitness Republic is friendly, accessible and supportive. We help everyone reach their fitness goals. What is your favourite thing about Fitness Republic? The people. Our team and the members too! It’s like one big family here and I’ve made so many friends. It’s more than just a gym! How old is the oldest person at Fitness Republic? I think at the last check it was 75. This goes to prove that with the right advice and support, you

82

are always the right age to start improving your fitness, strength and confidence. We welcome all ages and all abilities. We know that your family play a big part in the gym, but what advice would you give to the parents out there who want to get their children more active? Children can exercise from as young as 5 years old. Obviously, what you do depends on your age, so at 5 years it’s mainly fun things and lot’s of running around. Older children around 9-13 years can start a little formal exercise like cardio and light bodyweight. Our Junior spin classes are great for them. From 14 years onwards and you can join Fitness Republic as a full member! Walking through the gym door for the first time is always the hardest bit. What’s your advice for the novice gym goer? If you are new to exercise then I would really recommend a personal trainer. Learning how to train properly from the outset will save you time and increase the effectiveness of your sessions. A

bit like learning to drive, get a good teacher and your chances of passing are greatly increased! How often should people change their workout? How can they stay interested? This depends on your interest threshold. If you’re like me, then I get bored very easily, so I kind of change my workout every week! Realistically, as long as you’re progressing and challenging your muscles consistently, the same program will work very well. Change is great though and keeps you motivated. What’s your advice to those stuck in a fitness rut? Reassess your plan, your exercise selection and techniques. Then look seriously at your diet. It’s a major player in changing your body. Oh, and come and see us here at FR for personalised advice and fitness plans. We can help you get out your comfort zone and get results! QUICK FIRE ROUND: Key to success in changing shape? The right diet and exercise plan, then just be consistent. Best fat burning method? Progressive weight training, it has a longer lasting effect on your body composition.

Best rep range to get stronger? 6 reps. Top 4 calorie burning exercises? Thrusters, Burpees, Sled push and Push ups. Should I train my abs? Absolutely, leave no muscle untrained. Make sure you incorporate core training too, including lower back. Train early or late? Early, it gets you started for the day and I seem to be more productive after I’ve worked out. How many times do you train a week? 4 times per week How long have you been consistently training? 34 years!! Do you enjoy working with your wife? Yes, definitely! Occasionally it can be hard but Sarah adds so much to Fitness Republic that I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Need help with your fitness journey? Give us a call or drop us an email at info@fitnessrepublic.co.uk

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS We experienced a different kind of visitor on Thursday May 2nd, when we acted as one of the polling stations for the town. We hope this is not the last time. The Museum has been a hive of activity over the last few weeks. Leslie Smith, one of our in-house photographers, has been steadily photographing, for our records, all the framed pictures, old posters etc. which hang on the various walls. John Pearson has had the Hastings Family Roll reproduced and has also been working with Chris Bingley on the introduction of a touch-screen, to enable easy access to all our photographs and artefacts. Thanks to Richard Stevenson we have now encased our models of the Cotes Bridge in the Civil War and the maquette of the Grace Dieu Mother Superior (nicknamed ‘Rusty Mary’). There is still time to sign up on one of our town history walks in the summer. Ashby has a fascinating history within a relatively compact area so do come along and find out more about our town. All walks start at the Museum at 7pm and the three remaining this year will take place on June 26th, July 24th and August 7th, though there are just three places left on the August 7th ‘Scandal and Murder’ walk. To book a place, please call the Museum on 01530 560 090 during opening hours or call in personally.

ON THE BEAT Operation Lionheart aims to crackdown on County Lines activity which involves drugs being moved in and out of Leicestershire. Since the operation commenced, a total of 135 warrants have been carried out, leading to 95 people being arrested, and 83 people being charged. Their arrests come after officers have spent significant time gathering information and evidence on people suspected of being involved. Gangs and organised crime groups involved in County Lines activity use either dedicated mobile phone lines or a person as a ‘deal line’ to supply drugs to other areas of the county, often small towns. They usually exploit children or vulnerable adults to move and store drugs and money and will use coercion, intimidation, violence (including sexual violence) and weapons. As part of Operation Lionheart officers are appealing for communities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to report any County Lines activity they suspect is happening in their area. Chief Superintendent Adam Streets, head of Local Policing, said: “Communities can help us in

our efforts by reporting any concerns about the suspected sale and distribution of drugs in their area, no matter how small it may seem. Any details you have could be the missing piece of information we need to take action against people suspected of being involved in County Lines criminality.” Anyone with information is asked to call 101. For more information on County Lines, and how to spot the signs of it happening in your area, visit www.leics.police.uk/countylines

BEAUTY TIPS PS

HOW CAN YOU STOP SKIN FROM AGEING? Most people would love to discover a miraculous and non-invasive solutio on that stops skin from ageing, but the reality is that ageing is a natural process that we all face and it cannot be avoided. That said, there are many preventative meassures that you can put in place that slow the e ageing process.

WHAT CAN SLOW THE AGEING PROCESS? You can slow the intrinsic ageing process to some extent by using products containing ingredients that replace some of the diminished proteins found naturally in the skin. You can protect your skin from pollution by using a decent moisturiser. Nasties hidden within smog, dirt and dust attack cells and strip the skin of moisture, and this can lead to fine lines and wrinkles as the skin ages. A high-quality cleanser will soon remove any unwanted debris and moisturiser will add a protective barrier to your skin to stop pollution penetrating the dermis below. The sun has a lot to answer for when it comes to ageing skin, and ultraviolet rays can even cause damage through windscreens. You can easily protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen, covering up with loose clothing, wearing a hat and seeking shade. Unfortunately, the correlation between diet and skin health is not a myth. Sugary snacks, greasy meals, processed meat, alcohol, salty and spicy foods, caffeine and trans fats can – if consumed consistently – introduce antioxidants, impact collagen cells and affect moisture retention in the skin. The occasional indulgence is fine but really you want to be choosing foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, including fresh fruit and veg, fatty fish, nuts and seeds. HOW DO ANTIAGEING PRODUCTS WORK? Anti-ageing products basically work by combining specific ingredients that can be absorbed by the epidermis to minimise the signs of ageing. These might be naturally occurring proteins that the skin loses with age, formulas that work as a protective barrier against extrinsic factors, natural botanicals that contain skin-loving ingredients or scientifically enhanced peptides.

98

According to a study funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, sunscreen is one of the most effective anti-ageing ingredients available. If you feel regular sunscreen is too heavy, choose skincare products that contain broad spectrum sunscreen as an added ingredient and wear them daily underneath your makeup (not as sunscreen on the beach). Broad spectrum sunscreen will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays and these harmful rays can penetrate your skin even on cloudy days. When considering anti-ageing products, you want to choose something that combines active ingredients with a rich moisturiser. Moisturisers add water into the skin, sealing it in with creams and oils. This protective barrier prevents water from evaporating; water retention plumps skin which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen supplements and creams containing collagen can help top up what’s been lost, and some anti-ageing products also contain ingredients that support collagen formation such as vitamin C and yeast extract. These products will help to firm skin so that it appears visibly younger. Courtesy of Forever Living Products (UK) Ltd To find out more about Forever Living products including their anti-ageing skincare and sunscreen ranges contact your local representative: Bernadette Dooley (Bus ID Number: 440500094756) at bernadette_foreverliving@ yahoo.co.uk or call 07786 360 873.

CASTLE MEDICAL GROUP & THE SURGERY In this month’s update Sarah Humphreys shares with us the details of her role as the Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Castle Medical Group. “I have worked within General Practice for the last twenty-two years, initially starting as a practice nurse, then with training and development my role changed and adapted. I have been an Advanced Nurse Practitioner for the last fifteen years and working within Castle Medical Group for the last two and a half years. I trained at Masters Level to be an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and have continued to study and develop my role. I am able to assess, investigate, diagnose, treat, prescribe and refer patients I see within both the sit and wait (on the day emergency) and pre-booked appointments. I also continue to use the skills I gained as a practice nurse to treat patients with chronic diseases. I have throughout my time within various General Practices been interested in women’s health and

102

contraception. I assess, advice and fit contraceptive intrauterine devices (coils) as well as the contraceptive implants. I discuss and prescribe all contraceptives and HRT, as well as treating ladies of all ages with any women’s health issues. I find the role of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner to be varied and interesting. I feel the role complements and assists the GPs. The Surgery has three Advanced Nurse Practitioners with a fourth, Emma Williams starting with us later this month.”

BODY MATTERS

OPTIMIZE YOUR WORK SPACE AT HOME In recent years long commutes, juggling childcare and shrinking oďŹƒce spaces have all contributed to an increasing trend to work from home. There are lots of beneďŹ ts to this but it can be easy to fall into bad-habits. Many of us spend at least part of our time at a desk. When in a work office, usually this set up is managed for us. At home a poor set up can lead to slack posture, which inevitably will lead to strain in the back, neck and shoulders. Here are a few key points to encourage a better home working environment: APPOINT A SEPARATE WORK SPACE It may be very tempting to work from the comfort of your sofa, but this encourages a slouched posture, which can lead to neck and back problems. You do not need to have a large space, just a small corner of the home. SITTING CORRECTLY If you have the available funds and space buy an ergonomic chair that can be adjusted: Seat height adjustment Adjust the chair height so that your hips are higher than your knees and your feet are firmly on the floor. Try not to lower your chair to suit your desk height. If possible adjust your desk height. Height adjustable arm rests Height adjustable armrests provide additional support for the upper body when not using the keyboard. They should be adjusted so that elbows are supported but with your shoulders relaxed. The armrests should not prevent you from sitting close to your desk. If they restrict desk access consider removing them completely. SETTING UP YOUR DESKTOP Monitor Set the monitor screen at arms length and at the height where the top of the screen is eye level. Have the monitor in a central position on the desk so that you are not twisted to one side or another.

106

Keyboard and mouse Ensure that your upper arm and elbow are as close to the body and as relaxed as possible for mouse use to avoid over-reaching. Telephone/Mobile phone use Cradling the phone between your neck and shoulder causes severe muscle tension. If you regularly use a phone consider a headset. Laptops Laptops are very convenient but you cannot achieve the correct keyboard and screen height when working from them. My advice, if working from a laptop for any period of time then invest in a wireless keyboard and mouse. You can then raise your laptop (using a stand) to the correct eye level and place the keyboard/mouse in the optimum position. Take Breaks This is very important. The thing that keeps our spines healthy is movements. During your breaks make sure you leave the desk! Go for a short walk, do a few gentle exercises or stretches.

As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition. For more information please call Sarah Kavanagh or Tristan Hill on 01530 440 442, email contact@ashbyosteopath.com or visit www.ashbyosteopath.com

CELEBRATING LOCAL AUTHORS Two local poets have kindly shared their poems for your enjoyment this month‌

Memories Many people have written about their memories, In diaries, biographies and books. Some will say things were better in the old days, And some will tell us how bleak the future looks. There are those who write about their worldly travels, Of places and people they have seen and met. And some may write about their wild romances, Of lovers they prefer to long forget. Some pages may show images of happiness, Whilst some may tell of sadness, tears and woe. All of our lives are littered with a mixture, Of good and bad things many years ago. How nice to think that we can all age gracefully, With all of our worries buried and put to rest. Sadly, some may never achieve this status, And fall way short of being at their very best.

108

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

And some may write about their constant battles, With illnesses that they must overcome. Whilst others may feel sorry for their misfortunes, A miracle cure means new life has begun. Our minds can be just like a book of pictures, With millions of memories there in store. Each of us can tell our special stories, To all who enter though our golden doors. Brian Wood

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING CHARITY This month the team has been offered three days’ dry stone walling near Copt Oak, a site we have worked on before. It’s a National Forest woodland, with a stone wall dividing two fields. Stone walls have many different characters, because they are so intimately connected to the local geology. Typically, a dry stone wall is constructed of stone scavenged from the very field it is built in, combining the benefits of removing unwanted stone, and making use of this as a resource. “Upcycling”, they would call it, if we first thought of it nowadays! Hence a stone wall may be very different from one only a mile away, as the changing geology gives differences in how crumbly, hard or brittle the stone is, and the size and shape that particular mineral combination breaks into. This wall is full of weird random stones which are hard to stack, and was obviously built long ago by people who were being paid by the length, not by the hour! They made a shocking job of it, and we are basically having to take the wall down piece by piece and rebuild it better. And with our volunteers’ pride in

110

doing a good job, the wall will be many times better by the time we are through. If you would like to join us and learn how (it is suitable for most healthy people – many of the team are pensioners, and the best natural waller I ever taught was aged nine) contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

RECIPE

STRAWBERRY AND CREAM ECLAIRS

Filled with sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these dainty pastries make a great treat for afternoon tea or can be served as a delicious summer dessert. Swap the strawberries for fresh raspberries or blueberries, if liked. YOU WILL NEED: l

l l

l l

l

50g butter, chilled and diced 65g plain flour, sifted 2 medium eggs, lightly beaten 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 150g small strawberries TOP TIP You can make and bake the choux pastry eclairs a day in advance. If the pastry goes a little soft simply reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes until crisp.

112

METHOD: 1. Place the butter and 150ml cold

water in a small pan and heat gently until the butter melts. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil then quickly remove from the heat and add all the flour. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the mixture comes away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Leave to cool for 3-4 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 220C, fan 200C,

gas mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth and glossy. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Pipe 8 x 10cm lengths, spaced well apart, onto the baking sheet.

3. Bake for 12-15 mins until the eclairs are well risen and golden. Remove

ASHBY LIFE – Delivered direct to your doorstep since 2005

from the oven, pierce each eclair with the tip of a small knife and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes. This allows the steam to escape and dries out the centres of each eclair. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. Whip the cream and icing sugar in

a bowl until softly peaking. Spoon into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Hull and slice most of the strawberries (reserving four for decoration).

5. Halve each eclair and fill with

the cream then top with sliced strawberries. Sandwich back together and dust with icing sugar. Decorate each one with a swirl of piped cream and a reserved strawberry.

PETS’ CORNER

FOUR SUMMER PET HEALTH HAZARDS SLUG BAIT

You’re probably aware of many of the dangers your pet faces during the summer months, but here are four unusual health hazards you may not have thought about.

Some slug pellets contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, which can quickly cause serious health problems for pets if ingested. Signs of poisoning include vomiting, seizures, tremors, and fits, and it’s crucial to seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency.

BEE STINGS

Not all bee stings cause anaphylactic shock, but some animals can be affected in the same way as humans. It’s a potentially serious health issue, and you should look out for vomiting and diarrhoea, breathing difficulties, and general unsteadiness.

POISONOUS PLANTS AND FLOWERS

There are many plants and flowers that present a serious summer health hazard for your pet. Lilies are particularly poisonous to cats, and even the pollen can cause kidney failure. Other poisonous flowers and plants include foxgloves and lily of the valley, which can both cause heart arrhythmias in animals.

116

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

SNAKE BITES

Although adders are the only venomous snake in the UK, their presence can be a problem for dogs in the summer. Snake bites may cause swelling of the airways, organ failure and shock, as well as considerable inflammation at the injury site. It’s vital to seek emergency help from your vet if your pet has been exposed to any of these hazards – speed is of the essence, and could ultimately save their lives.

THE NATIONAL OPEN GARDEN SCHEME

OPEN GARDENS IN JUNE Last month we introduced The National Garden Scheme. By opening gardens, this charity raises much needed funds for Cancer and Nursing charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, and Hospice UK donating over £3million last year.

So why not pop along for a chat? In addition it is a beautiful garden n combining both cottage style, modern sculptures, herbaceous planting and romantic arches of roses and clematis. Late June is a perfect time to see this

There are 49 gardens open in our local area in June for visitors to enjoy. Opening on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd are two gardens in Loughborough, at 134 and 94 Herrick Road. Both are gardens attached to Victorian Terrace houses. 134 is a small garden brimming with plants, shrubs and climbers including herbs, and alpine bed, and a veg plot. The owner designs and makes her own willow plant supports which are on show around the garden and available to order. 94 Herrick Road is a traditional garden with a collection of Geraniums and Heucheras, a small pond, and three active beehives. If you are thinking of opening your garden under the scheme, Oak Tree House at South Kilworth (LE17 6DU) opens on Saturday 22nd June and the owner is the NGS Leicestershire County Organiser. garden, one of our special “Roses and Lavender” gardens, the beautiful rose arbour will be in flower, plus clematis and summer perennials. These are just a few of the gardens opening in June. In all gardens there are plenty of places to sit and relax, enjoy tea, homemade cake and the garden views. You can easily search for an open garden near you on the website, www.ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/

BOOK REVIEWS

SUMMER READS

Want to create show-stopping meals on your BBQ? Fancy growing your own vegetables this summer? Maybe you’re just in need of a new novel for your holiday? We’ve got you covered… The Wych Elm Tana French One horrific night changes Toby’s life for ever. He retreats to the place he feels safest – Ivy House, to look after his terminally ill uncle. But then a skull is discovered in the garden and Toby has to question everything he believes to be true. Are his cousins hiding something from him? Is his uncle a killer? And, with his own memory damaged, how can Toby be sure he’s not the murderer? While The Wych Elm is a slow-burner, it’s well worth sticking with.

Stepsister Jennifer Donnelly Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but who stops to consider her stepsisters? Isabelle is neither pretty nor demure. But if she’s brave enough to cut off her own toe to fit her foot in a glass slipper, what else is she capable of? While Stepsister is aimed at young adults, this imaginative story is also likely to appeal to older readers who fancy losing themselves in a twisted fairy tale for a few hours.

Grow All You Can Eat in 3 Square Feet Chauney Dunford When it comes to food, few things beat picking your own vegetables straight from the garden. And you don’t need a large plot to do it. Whether you have a balcony, a courtyard or just a windowsill, you can grow your own vegetables, fruit and herbs. This book offers plenty of advice for would-be growers, from which plants thrive in shady gardens to which flowers can help to protect your crops. You’ll soon be creating your own bicycle wheel trellis, balcony saddlebag or strawberry colander.

Property Lionel Shriver Looking for a book to dip in and out of, rather than devote whole sunny afternoons to? This collection of short stories and novellas might be the answer. If you want fastpaced action and loathe long passages of description, it’s probably not for you. If you enjoy wry humour, detailed characterisation and stories that you’re still pondering about hours later, it’s well worth a look.

Weber’s Greatest Hits Jamie Purviance Over the years, Weber has released a series of books to accompany its bestselling barbeques. The latest, Weber’s Greatest Hits, has more than 100 recipes for starters, mains (beef, lamb, pork, poultry, fish and shellfish), sides and desserts. Dishes include Chicken Tacos, Salmon Skewers, Zesty Garlic Prawns, Chilli-Rubbed Chicken and, for the traditionalist, Texas Burgers. 120

The Rosie Result Graeme Simsion Professor Don Tillman is back, more than a decade after we first met him in The Rosie Project. This time, he has a new project – helping his son Hudson to settle into school (and neurotypical society). Hudson’s teacher thinks Hudson may be autistic. Don and Rosie need to decide whether to seek a formal diagnosis. And, while they’re at it, whether Don should be classed as autistic himself. While The Rosie Result is the third in the trilogy, it can be read as a standalone novel. A warm, humorous, thought-provoking read.

CHESS PUZZLE

WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN TWO Is it possible to go back in time? Normally, no. But in chess we can go back to our last game to see if we could have done better. For at the critical moment we chose Plan A, which lost. Very sad. We dismissed Plan B, but on reflection it was a good idea. Then we check the position on a chess engine. It says play move C, which wins a piece. But it’s complicated, and that’s why we missed it altogether. Rats. That’s life. Look at this puzzle, It’s White to play and mate in two. The correct move is the last move you would think of. Have a go. Join us at the Ivanhoe Social Club, every Thursday at 7.30pm for a real game and a chat. Look us up at www.ashbychess.com for more details and team news. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
