NAIL SURGERY OFFERED AT PERFECT FEET HOW IS AN INGROWN NAIL TREATED? If this is the ďŹ rst time this has happened and you are only experiencing minor discomfort at Perfect feet we will attempt to gently trim back the ingrown nail to where it is comfortable, clean the area with sterile saline, dry and then apply a anti-septic dressing. If there is infection we are able to sell and supply you a course of antibiotics if suitable. If this has been a reoccurring problem, bleeding daily, very swollen or you have had antibiotics in the past for it then nail surgery should be considered and assessed if right for you. THE PROCEDURE EXPLAINED In brief a local anesthetic injection is given to numb the toe. A rubber band called a tourniquet is put on your toe then it is cleaned with

anti-septic. The offending nail spike is removed all the way to the nail bed and then acid called Phenol is used to neutralize the portion of the nail bed that is responsible for producing the ingrown nail. Depending on your nail the podiatrist may also recommended removing another portion from the other corner of the nail or remove the nail completely to reduce the risk of a ingrown nail developing the other side. The Tourniquet is taken off and a large antiseptic dressing is applied. The podiatrist will change the dressing 2-3 days later for a smaller dressing that you look after and change until healed. It is important to note if successful the portion of nail treated will never grow back. For full details please contact us on the details below.

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

ASHBY’S NEW LANDMARK SCULPTURE Work on the Ashby Project continues throughout the town and progress can now be clearly seen in the Cultural and Leisure Quarter.

enjoyed the experience and their final drawings and models influenced the addition of the surface patterns on the final sculpture which add an extra layer of interest when seen close up. In fact one of the key elements of the new sculpture is the way it can be viewed from so many perspectives and with each view becomes something new. From one view point you may see a majestic tree, from another a row of silver columns, close up you can see the ‘heart’ of the forest through the leaves and texture.

Following the demolition of the old Health Centre and the completion of the new car park and surrounding area on North Street last year, March saw the installation of a new landmark sculpture. On Tuesday 19th March the sculpture fittingly called ‘The Heart of the Forest’ was officially opened and we took the opportunity to speak with Adrian Moakes, the artist commissioned to design the sculpture to find out more. Adrian explained that he attended a number of local events last year and spent a busy Saturday morning on Market Street engaging with residents to understand more about Ashby, what it means to locals and to gather ideas on what themes to integrate into the sculpture. Initial sketchings and maquettes (models) were shared and the feedback from residents was overwhelmingly positive.

One thing is clear and that is Adrian has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Ashby, meeting so many local Ashbeians and creating a remarkable sculpture he hopes will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. Adrian will be returning in the summer to install another piece of art; a metal ‘floorscape’ which will be installed in the ground in front of the Hood Park gates. ‘The Forest Floor’ will feature the artwork created by the children. This community artwork will complement the larger sculpture and incorporate an information plaque about the project as a whole.

The importance of our location here right at the very heart of the National Forest became clear. Indeed one of the key aims of the sculpture is to reinforce and reawaken people’s interest in the National Forest. Late last year Adrian spent time running art workshops with over 150 children from Ashby Willesley and Hill Top primary schools as well as Ivanhoe College. The children were given traditional drawing materials such as charcoal and pencil and encouraged to draw the leaves, shrubs and bugs they could see in the school grounds. Adrian then taught them to make small wire models of their drawings. Both Adrian and the children thoroughly

BODY MATTERS

TENNIS AND GOLFERS ELBOW Two ‘overuse’ in njuries we see regularly here at ProPhysio arre tennis & golfers elbow - also known as laterral and medial epicondylitis respectively. This refers to thee painful tendon irritation at the bony attachmen nt on the outside (tennis) or the inside of the elb bow (golfers) Tennis elbow is by far the most common and can be very deb bilitating and painful. The forearm mu uscles required for finger and wrist activitties anchor at the bony prominences on n either side of the elbow. With excessive loading small tears and tissue damage can develop at or near these attachment points. Overloading cau used by sports activities or heavy manual taasks as well as persistent low load movem ment patterns such as keyboarding or playing musical instruments can cause epicondylitis.

better itself but with treatment its recovery can be accelerated.

Avoiding tennis/golfers elbow can be achieved by: • Playing the sport that aggravates the injury with correct techniques. In the case of tennis or golf, having training lessons can be helpful.

Firstly, it’s wise to change your movement patterns in your life that have provoked the condition and rest the injured arm. The use of ice for 10 minutes several times a day can be beneficial with pain relief.

• Ensure your keyboard is set up optimised with wrist support pads and an ergonomically shaped mouse.

The wearing of a support can also help and there are several on the market. They will compress the injured tissue and protect it to assist with healing.

• Use the correct tools at work such as a cordless screwdriver. It will take the strain off your forearm muscles.

Physiotherapy can be very beneficial and manual therapy such as massage and exercises to stretch/ strengthen the damaged tendons often helps. They can also help with advice tailored to your specific circumstances.

• Avoid lifting activities with the back of hand facing upwards. Try to have your wrist in a neutral position with thumb pointing upwards. • Take breaks during activity and listen to your body telling you that you are overloading your muscles. Tennis and golfers elbow with time usually gets 18

With chronic conditions Shock Wave Therapy is often effective. This stimulates the healing process and is available in ProPhysio in Ashby. Give us a call on 01530 588557 to find out more or see www.prophysiomidlands.co.uk

ASHBY FOOD BANK NEEDS VOLUNTEERS CAN YOU HELP? Ashby Food Bank is part of the Trussell Trust network of food banks and has been helping people throughout the local area for nearly six years. Working with people in crisis, the food bank provides emergency food parcels containing three days’ worth of non- perishable foods and toiletries. In addition we offer a cup of tea and a listening ear whilst advising on other services and agencies who can facilitate on-going support. We are generously supported by the people of Ashby and surrounding areas who have donated food and toiletries through collections in local schools, churches, community groups, businesses and supermarkets as well as many individual donors. We now need to recruit additional volunteers to continue this important work within our community. We are looking for people from all backgrounds and experiences for varied volunteering opportunities with us.

Specific opportunities exist for those interested in: • Helping with strategic planning, quality assurance and policy implementation. • Driving to collect food donations and deliver food to distribution sites. • Sorting and storage of food in our warehouse. • Making cups of tea for clients during sessions. • Listening and talking directly to clients in sessions. NEW PHOTOS OF ASHBY As this is our Easter issue and lots of you will be visiting local churches during this month it seemed like the perfect opportunity to share some more wonderful pictures from the members of the New Photos of Ashby Facebook group. NATIONAL TRUST NEWS

LEAP INTO SPRING AT CALKE ABBEY THIS EASTER It’s that glorious time of year again, when the sun begins to shine and the smell of fresh flowers fills the air. Whether you want to take the family for an outdoor adventure or escape the crowds this Easter, there are lots of ways to enjoy the best that spring has to offer at Calke Abbey. Get crafty this Easter in the Riding School, which is packed with nature-themed activities to get those creative cogs working (Monday 15th to Friday 26th April, 11am–4pm). Calke’s family activity area, Squirt’s Stable, is also open for the entire school holidays (Monday 8th to Friday 26th April, 10.30am–4pm) – it’s a great way to escape those Cadbury Egg Hunt crowds. If you’re ready to stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh air, Calke Abbey is nestled among 600 acres of historic parkland, just waiting to be explored. Pick up a park map when you arrive to discover a range of walking trails, or download a spring walk from the Calke Abbey website. For families, the Tramway Trail provides a fairly flat, circular route – perfect for exploring on two wheels.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK It’s never easy being a teen in an adult’s world – it’s no different in the world of fitness WHERE DO YOU START? Not the biggest. Not the broadest. Not the fittest. These 3 sentences describe 15 year old me. I’ve always been an avid football player and hence have always been athletically inclined, however resistance training proved to be a whole different ball park. I’ve been involved in resistance training since I was 15 years old and getting started was the best decision I ever made. Joining a gym and beginning the pursuit of bettering myself has allowed me to become a happier, more confident individual and I can’t imagine a life without it anymore. Once you become passionate about something it becomes a part of you, a part of your everyday life. You live it, you breathe it. Like most things, sometimes you

even hate it, but you always come back to it. For me, that was the gym. So, you’re young and enthusiastic. You’re excited to begin your fitness journey but a little embarrassed and maybe even a little scared that you’re not going to know what you’re doing. You go on YouTube and spend hours watching workout videos, giving yourself a variety of exercises to attack the gym with. It’s your first day. You pull on your new gym-wear and enter the gym. Ready to start your workout and then... blank. This is exactly what happened to me. It turns out each gym is different to the last and equipment doesn’t look the same as in the videos. All of a sudden, my artillery of exercises had become a clluster off word ds wiith h littlle meaniing attach hed. Principles I’d researched such as pyramid sets, dropsets and supersets went out the windo ow and I was flummoxed. So, I did what anyone in th he gym, newcomer or veteran, should do; I asked for help. The rest, as they say, is history. I’ve gonee from knowing nothing about fitness to purssuing a career in it over the short space of 3 yeears. That is why I’d like to share my top tips for anyone new into the fitness world. ASK FOR HELP I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am now without the help and guidance I receeived from everyone at Fitness Republic. No question is regardeed as a silly question, so assk as many as you need to. Pick the brains of peoplee such as myself who’ve been in yo our position and understand how you’re feeling because everyone had to start somewhere. The more you ask, th he more you’ll learn and the more effectivee you’ll be able to make your time in the gym.

BE CONSISTENT As a gym goer, consistency is key. Consistency gets results. The best way to become consistent in the gym is to make a schedule that fits you. Everyone is different and has different commitments. For some it will be fitting in the gym around studies and school. For others around work and home life. Results do not come from one big gym session. Results come from consistently smashing your gym and diet plans week in week out. Results come with time.

STICK TO THE PLAN All gym goers should have a programme. Whether this is one you write yourself or one you ask a coach to write for you. Plan what body parts you are going to work out on what days, plan when you’re going to have your days off, plan what exercises you’re going to do. Structure is the key to seeing the changes you want to see in your body. NOTE TO PARENTS Letting your child go to the gym can be daunting. You may worry that theey might do the wrong things or without proper technique. Here at Fitness Republic, we understand that. So, if there are an ny parents worried about their childrren starting the gym, come and see us for a free consultation and we’ll find a way to help put your mind at easse. We can help with induction ns, programmes, personall training and ongoing g support and advice. Alex Ford, Coach – Fitness Republic

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

HOW TO SIDESTEP RETIREMENT REMORSE The good news is that most pensioners thoroughly enjoy the freedom that retirement brings. They can pursue their hobbies, take more holidays and spend more time with their family and friends. When people have regrets, it’s often to do with the way they planned for their retirement and the decisions they did or didn’t take about their finances whilst there was still time. PLAN EARLY Many people reach retirement and wish they’d put more into their pension plan in their peak earning years. Keeping a regular eye on how much you’re saving towards your pension will ensure that you know how much you’re likely to have when you retire and give you the chance to increase your contributions if you can afford to. Getting a state pension forecast is important too; many people overestimate how much their state pension will be worth and aren’t sure at what age they will receive it. A recent report from Avivai warns that millions of workers risk sleepwalking their way to a pension that will, in effect, be less than the minimum wage at retirement. Don’t let this happen to you.

36

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

TAKE ADVICE Not getting appropriate advice is often highlighted as a regret by those people who feel they made poor financial choices when they retired. People retiring today can expect to have several decades of active life ahead of them. Making sure that their funds don’t run out too soon can often be a major concern. Getting good financial advice can help ensure that you have a plan in place that meets your likely pattern of expenditure and keep funds in reserve in case you need to pay for nursing or residential care.

The sooner you start your pension, the longer your money will have to grow. If you’re self-employed, an employee, work part-time, run your own business or have accumulated pension pots with past employers, we can offer you the advice you need. If you haven’t looked at your pension plan recently, then please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020 to arrange a review. i Aviva, Sept 2018

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

TICKNALL’S FIRST MAY DAY FETE PROMISES A DAY OF FAMILY FUN FOR ALL! Head down to Ticknall to celebrate springtime with an array of activities and a May Day Fete on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May. This will be the first year that Ticknall has held a fete and event organisers are going to bring you a day of fun and entertainment. A small group of parents and staff from Dame Catherine Harpur’s school decided that the village needed an event that was going to celebrate Ticknall and wanted to do something that would be about getting together as a community and a fete seemed like it would be perfect. So with lots of planning and talking to different parts of the community and parish council the Ticknall May Day Fete has been created. There are going to be lots of activities and events including crafts, children’s activities, games, old style fair games, live music, competitions, bouncy castles, character appearances, stalls, raffles, homemade refreshments and lots more, including a dog show. The aim of the fete is to bring together the whole local community (which of course includes Ticknall and all surrounding villages and towns) to celebrate with a traditional springtime festival. In typical May Day tradition the fete will include the crowning of Ticknall’s own May Queens and Kings and

the children from the local school will be May Pole dancing. There will also be a touch of the nostalgic country fair with ‘welly wanging’ competitions for a variety of age groups. It really will be a fun day for all. Everyone from the village is getting involved including the WI, church, chapel, Army Cadets, Dame Catherine Harpur’s School, St George’s bell ringers, all the different clubs and societies as well as support from the Harpur Crewe Estate and the National Trust. There will also be a variety of different stalls offering a multitude of goods for sale, including, crafts, plants, cakes, books, toiletries, preserves, dog treats & toys, tombola’s, raffles, games etc. The dog show will be a fitting end to the day and there will be lots of great categories that hopefully will suit everyone no matter how big or small your pooch is. Dog show registration commences at 12noon, with the show starting at 2pm. Bring your canine friend along for the chance to be a winner! Entry forms can be filled out on the day and submitted. The Fete will take place around Ticknall Village Hall, DE73 7JX on Monday May 6th from 11am to 3pm For further information please go to the Dame Catherine Harpur Primary and Nursery facebook page.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

IT’S ALL ABOUT HATS … This month we will be busy at St Helen’s preparing for and celebrating the most important Christian festival of the year – Easter. Our volunteers will be wearing their welcome hats as both church and heritage centre are visited by several school, nursery and community groups. If you’d like to join us as a volunteer, there are lots of different hats on offer! For instance, you could join our research team, become a tour guide or welcomer, help out at craft workshops, bake cakes or help with school visits. On Wednesday April 10th, between 10am and 2pm, primary age children and their carers are invited to come along to our warm and friendly Community Heritage Centre to make Easter Bonnets and Crowns. (A small charge applies). On Good Friday, 19th April, St Helen’s will be joining the Ashby Walk of Witness, remembering Jesus’ walk to his crucifixion, wearing a most unwelcome hat, a crown of thorns. We’re also beginning to cast our Heritage Community Play, based around the history of St Helen’s Church.

Which metaphorical ‘hat’ would you like to wear in this? Are you an actor, a stage hand or a seamstress? There’s a ‘hat’ for everyone in this production, which will be performed in St Helen’s Church on July 12th and 13th. We are looking for members of the parish and town to join in to really make this a proper community event. If you are interested in being involved in any way, please email Sharn Stinson at the Heritage Centre on sthelensheritage@gmail.com.

DO MORE. LEARN MORE. BE MORE. Did you know there are five beaver scout colonies, three cub scout packs and two scout troops here in Ashby? Do you have children between 6-14? Would they like to try kayaking, camping, abseiling, whilst gaining confidence and developing skills for life? Adults are also welcome to volunteer, use your skills and gain new ones. For more information call Jon Bloor on 07588 869 9882 or email scouting@ashbyscouts.org.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN

MAZES A garden maze is a web of lines leading to a centre usually with walls made from hedges. Traditionally there would be a reward at the heart of a maze, such as a seat or water fountain, sun-dial or statue. Mazes first became popular in Italy in the 16th century, and generally were for entertainment and the ability to encourage walking within a confined space. Usually maze paths are made from wood-chip, sand, gravel or stone and the walls from yew, juniper, lime, box, privet or laurel. Maze characteristics include multiple paths creating a puzzle with various choices of direction and several dead ends. It also has several ways in and out. This contrasts with a labyrinth which has only a single route, one entrance and one exit with a non branching path. In Greek mythology the Labyrinth was a structure to hold a Minotaur (monster). In Northumberland there is a ‘minotaur maze’ made up of high walls of gabions filled with rocks. This sits in the grounds of Kielder Castle. England’s oldest hedge maze is at Hampton Court.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 This was planted in the 17th century. Since then the hornbeam trees have been replaced with holly and yew. Another old maze is at Longleat House in Wiltshire, and the hedge maze there is the longest in the world. It has 1.7 miles of pathways and six bridges from which you can survey the maze at various points and figure the way out! At Longleat hedges are built from yew, meticulously clipped, and are an exquisite piece of living art, made up of over 16,000 trees. It is said to take 20 to 90 minutes to navigate depending on how lost you might get. The National Trust has a number of properties with mazes you may wish to visit too. These include Belton House in Lincolnshire which was originally planted in 1890 but was actually remade in 2000. Cliveden in Buckinghamshire is a good one, but beware it is quite disorientating as the yew hedges are 2 meters high. Less daunting in the National Trust collection is the pavement maze in Greys Court in Oxfordshire. Hever Castle in Kent is interesting as it has a water maze as well as an Edwardian yew maze. The water maze includes stepping stones in water and areas where you’ll be splashed as you head towards the centre. In recent years temporary mazes have popped up, made from the crop maize. Locally, Wistow Maze at Kibworth Road Leicestershire near Market Harborough has had such an event, which this year reopens again in July. It looks to be good fun for children with quiz trails and 3 miles of paths. There is an official Maize Association which you can look at to find out more www.maize-maze.com.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

NEW VOLUNTEERS, NEW DISPLAYS AND NEW SUMMER WALKS! We are delighted that our plea for volunteers in last month’s Ashby Life has resulted in two people offering their help. Hopefully, that is just the start. Please come along for a chat if you are interested in joining us. Julie Summerton from the NWLDC came in to the Museum to present us with a plaque, in recognition of their grant towards our new wall-mounted display case. It is thanks to support from the three tiers of councils that your Museum is able to survive. We are grateful to them as well as to our volunteers. We are improving our displays when we can recently a photographic wall display on Ashby Station was mounted; this is to be followed by one on the old horse-drawn tramway from Ashby to Ticknall and Cloud Hill. We also hope to mount a wall poster on the Hastings Family Tree from the Conquest onwards. These are all thanks to John Pearson, our A/V and Marketing Manager. Our programme of summer walks is now complete. In addition to walks for three outside groups we can

offer four to the general public. Do come along and find out more about Ashby’s fascinating history. Walks start at the Museum at 7pm, cost £4 per person and involve roughly an hour and a half of easy walking. Dates are as follows:- Wednesday May 22nd (part of the National Forest programme), Wednesday June 26th, Wednesday July 24th and Wednesday August 7th (Scandal and Murder). These walks are popular (the last one is already half full) so please book a place at the Museum on 01530 560 090, or call at reception in person.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

WORLD HEALTH Every year, the World Health Organisation has a special campaign day: World Health Day. This year, on April 7th they will draw attention to the millions of people worldwide who have limited access (or even no access at all) to life saving health care. Caring for the sick and injured is a noble calling and we particularly admire the doctors and nurses who ease suffering, under adverse conditions, in poor or war-torn countries. There’s no denying that they make the world a better place than it would otherwise be. Yet even in rich countries, health is an elusive goal. The World Health Organisation’s definition of health is: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

78

April is also when Christians all over the world celebrate Easter. It marks what you might call “God’s World Health Day” when his son Jesus died and was raised to life again as the most important milestone in his plan to restore perfect health to the world. Not only will people have complete physical, mental and social well-being but disease, infirmity and even death will be a thing of the past. If you would like to know more about God’s “health plan”, why not come along to Bible Hour any Sunday morning. It’s genuinely the only solution to world health. MONEY MATTERS

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU ARE PLANNING TO FAIL “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”, brilliant quote by Benjamin Franklin. It is a phrase at the back of my mind used nearly every day, not just within my business. For example going away on holiday, we all write list of things to take, check list of things we need to do and then plan things we will be doing whilst away. But what I find is so many people I meet fail to plan their financial future. They seem to leave it to chance. WHY? I have yet to hear a logical response. The main ones are – “well I am not sure how things will pan out” – “I don’t have a crystal ball”. What shocks me is many of the people I meet are very successful in business or have successful careers, but for some reason they seem to leave their financial future security to chance. Why do they want to FAIL? Then I come across others who have a go at planning. They have a collection of spreadsheets, which they freely admit are hard to keep up to date. Fantastic they have made a start. The common issue I hear is – “but they are just numbers on a sheet – we really struggle to see what it looks like”. My clients are fortunate – they have access to some brilliant software which helps me help them plan. Then visually they can see how things look. This software helps me answer the THREE CORE QUESTIONS my clients regularly have in their minds 1. Will we be alright? 2. Have we enough money ? (can we afford to do ….. ?) 3. What happens if? Question 2 comes in a variety of forms. For example, can we afford to retire? Will we have enough money in the future? Can we afford to do the things we want to do? With question 3 it is all about those what happens if? What happens if we have a serious health problem? What happens if we sell up and downsize? What happens if our money does not grow or we suffer a stock market disruption like in 2008? 82

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd This sort of software helps people have a clearer picture of what their financial future could look like by putting into place some sort of strategy. Seeing how what they have already accumulated will work for them and how best they could improve things. It helps them visually see the plan, rather than a bunch of numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s a start which can then be regularly reviewed. Financial Planning for your future should not be about trying to work out which is the best pension or investment plan to buy. It should first of all be about understanding what you want for your future, then planning how best you can achieve the things you want, having contingencies just in case the “what if” happens, but ensuring you can afford to do the things you want to do. We suggest you ensure you use an adviser who adopts this approach, because if you do not plan, then you are planning to fail.

ON THE BEAT We are aware that vehicles such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes and other high powered motor vehicles are currently being targeted by thieves across the midlands. Because modern cars are so secure, thieves have to have the keys to steal them and to help sell the vehicle on. As a result, some thieves are breaking into houses to get the keys. The most common method is to open an insecure front door and simply take the keys which are often found close to the front door, or search the house for them. This can take just a few seconds. Please follow this advice to prevent becoming a victim of car key burglary: - Lock your house when you are in, or at least do not leave the keys in the lock with the door unlocked. - Do not leave keys in the lock of a door that has a cat flap, as thieves can use a “fishing” technique to obtain them. - Move the key rack out of sight - Do not leave keys in the sight of windows or obvious places.

We reach across our Facebook witter pages. & Tw

- Invest in a 3 star ‘diamond approved’ lock barrel. Details of which is the best lock for you can be found at: www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/locksnapping-most-secure-lock-cylinder - Invest in a Clutch Claw. This device connects to both the clutch and break, so neither can move or both are pressed simultaneously, resulting in the vehicle being unable to move. Finally, be vigilant. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, and report anything unusual to the police when you see it happening at the time. Green Thumb’s Top Tips for The

e et

n

n

Spring: the season of awakening and new life, the blooming of fresh buds and re-emerging beautiful colour. It can be a truly inspiring time that is invigorating to the senses. Preparing your garden to spend more time in it with family and friends requires a little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service share their expert advice to help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months and prepare it for the transition into summer.

The amount of lawnmowing required now winter is over will naturally increase; GreenThumb recommends implementing a good, regular mowing programme. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for lawnmowing. It’s important that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed, to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. Also, cutting the grass too short, too soon will weaken the grass which will attract unwanted weeds and moss. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to a height of about 50mm (2”). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time. Another way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs from the lawn and cut back overhanging shrubs and plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it’s a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out; they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). GreenThumb can assist in this regard, as they have the best seed and an excellent 100% organic top-dressing. GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for the UK’s lawns: they have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition - into a healthy, fresh and beautiful lawn. Call 01530 244552 or email ashby@greenthumb. co.uk for more expert help and advice on maintaining your lawns.

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

COLEORTON AND NEW LOUNT VOLUNTEER GROUP The Coleorton and New Lount Volunteer Group was formed back in October 2010 to assist with the management of two local nature reserves; Coleorton Wood and New Lount Nature Reserve. Since their formation the group has been extremely successful in helping to manage the range of habitats that exist across the two sites. As a result of all the work put in by the volunteers over the last eight years the two sites have seen positive improvements to both the natural history and the recreational facilities.

hedge laying, access improvement and wildflower meadow management. So whatever your skills, it iss likelyy that the group can make good use of them. If you have an interest in conserving your local environment please contact them at coleorton11@gmail.com or call 01530 223 456. The Coleorton & New Lount Volunteer Group are also holding two fundraising plant sales in May. The plant sales are an important part of the group’s fundraising events each year. They also help the group to achieve one of their key objectives of working with local communities. The group would love to see as many local people attending these two events and would very much appreciate any donations of plants, etc. which they may be able to sell. The plant sales will take place on Saturday 4th May at Coleorton Wood, Pitt Lane (off the Moor), LE67 8FS, and on Saturday 18th May at New Lount Nature Reserve, Newbold Coleorton LE67 8JH from 10am to 1pm.

The group is supported by Leicestershire County Council Parks Department and Coleorton Parish Council (who own Coleorton Wood). As you may have seen on our Community Board recently, the group meet on a regular basis; four times a month. This consists of two work sessions at each site; two of which are on Tuesdays and two on Saturdays. The work sessions are from 10.00am to 2pm with a refreshment break around 12.30pm. Full details can be found on their website cnlvg.weebly.com/

It’s the perfect opportunity to stock up on plants, garden ornaments and more, all at reasonable prices. Tea and coffee will also be available.

They are always looking to welcome on board additional members and it’s a fantastic way to learn new skills, make new friends, burn off some calories and enjoy the great outdoors. The work is mainly manual outdoor work predominantly using hand tools, although they do have powered tools and a number of volunteers trained to use them. Volunteers can become involved in a range of practical tasks, such as pond clearing, tree planting, woodland management, ecological surveying, 98

The dog had to be walked. That wasn’t up for discussion, it was a given. Sandy shot him a gu uilty glance; sure enough, Buddy was staring at him m, waiting for the sign for action. “I can’t … I can’t … there’s nothing left. I’m running on empty”, he murmured. A warm tear trickled down his cheek. Lacking the impetus to lift his hand, Sandy felt the tear drip off his jaw and come to rest on his shirt - yeah, might as well wear it like a badge that reads: bye world, I’m done. Buddy cocked his head to one side and widened his labrador eyes imploringly. Sandy sighed, and soon found himself placing one foot in front of the other, heading for the dirt track by his house. The bitter Winter was the longest he could remember, a perpetual mirror to the climate of his soul: dark, joyless and endlessly barren. February rain had now replaced snow, and the temperature teased him with the promise of better times. Sandy was having none of it. Approaching the gnarled oak tree at the top of the

track, Buddy stopped; this was his favourite spot to pee, and today would be no exception. “As predictable as my mood”, thought Sandy. As he raised his eyes to curse the sodden sky, a glint of green pierced the grey. The bud was small and ordinary, yet gutsy. Sandy observed its intricate folds, wondering how it might evolve into the characteristic oak leaf. He was unsure how long he stood there but was startled by a movement: in the breeze-free air, the bud opened minutely to reveal the beginnings of a leaf, offering itself to Sandy’s consciousness. He quickly drew breath in surprise. Life. Life! “Thank you”, he nodded to the cunning oak, “I’ll keep an eye out for more tomorrow”. Sandy walked home with a little more zest. PETS’ CORNER

BUYING A HAMSTER Although a relatively ‘low-profile’ pet compared with cats and dogs, hamsters need lots of loving care and attention. They typically live for two or three years so are a long-term responsibility, but they bring lots of fun into your home and can make great first pets. If you’re thinking of buying a hamster, here’s a little information that might help them settle in. Characteristics With 24 different types of hamster you won’t be short of choice, but Syrian (or golden) and dwarf hamsters are among the most popular. Adults of the golden variety need to be kept alone as they’re inclined to fight, as are males of the dwarf hamster variety, so all-female groups are best. Diet Pre-prepared hamster mix is a good choice of staple diet and should be supplemented with small amounts of fruit and vegetables. Hamsters need to grind down their teeth regularly as they grow

110

continually, so providing them with crunchy snacks or small chew toys can help to keep their teeth short. Play Hamsters love to play and can be quite adventurous, so a cage with different levels is ideal. You can add plastic toys for entertainment, and tunnels for them to run through. A hamster’s needs are quite complex, but by being aware of their behaviour and characteristics as well as eating and playing habits, you’ll be able to meet their requirements with confidence and enjoy their company as part of the family.

BOOK REVIEWS

e to

een

Don’t miss out on reading the novel of these TV and film adaptions. Big Little Lies Liane Moriarty Series two of Big Little Lies is due this June. If you haven’t yet read the book that the first series was based on, now’s the time. It follows three mothers in the run up to a murder investigation. Madeline is fiercely loyal, impetuous and prone to holding a grudge. Celeste is stunningly beautiful but her perfect home life isn’t all it seems. The youngest of the three, Jane, is struggling with a secret from her past. As the three women become closer, a rift grows between the trio and the rest of the kindergarten parents. But is it really big enough to lead to murder? A wry, witty portrayal of modern life. Bird Box Josh Malerman Malorie is taking the children on a journey down the river. They will all need blindfolds, because even a glimpse at what waits outside could kill them. ‘Boy’ and ‘girl’ have never seen a tree or the sky, but at four years old they’re trained to listen very, very carefully, because it’s not just monsters that can kill you. This atmospheric thriller was a hit on Netflix and the book is even better. Expect a tense, rollercoaster of a ride. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Gail Honeyman Eleanor has an ordinary job, in an ordinary town. But to her colleagues, Eleanor herself is decidedly odd. When she inadvertently helps an acquaintance to rescue an elderly man, Eleanor discovers there may be more to life than just existing. A beautiful book about the importance of human connections. The film is currently in development, starring Reese Witherspoon as Eleanor.

114

The Knife of Never Letting Go Patrick Ness In Prentisstown it’s never quiet. The thoughts of men and animals crowd you wherever you walk. But then Todd finds a patch of silence, where the thoughts of others can’t penetrate, and discovers that everything he believes to be true may be a lie. The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a series. The film adaptation, Chaos Walking, hit cinemas last month. The Woman in the Window A. J. Finn Dr Anna Fox is agoraphobic and lives alone. She spends her days watching films, talking to people online and spying on the neighbours. She also drinks a lot of wine and is rather slapdash with her medications. So when she thinks she’s witnessed a serious crime, how can she make people believe her? And can she really trust her own judgement? A slowburning thriller. Read it before the film comes out this autumn. Where’d You Go, Bernadette Maria Semple Renowned architect and eccentric Bernadette has disappeared and it seems it’s up to her 14 year old daughter, Bee, to figure out what happened. Bee’s journey will take her all the way to Antarctica. An amusing read told through emails, letters, phone transcriptions and official reports. The film stars Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

SPRING IS SPRUNG, THE GRASS IS RIZ….. … and since we do actually know where the birdies is, The Conservation Volunteers are not to be found hedgelaying or thinning the new woodlands of the National Forest any longer! At this time of year, we leave the hedges and woodlands for the happy bird couples to build their nests in. This is both wildlife friendly and a legal requirement – did you know it is against the law to disturb nesting birds? Be they sparrows, magpies or golden eagles, people may not interfere with their nesting sites. While we are carrying out our conservation work, there is often potential for us to disturb or annoy wildlife. When you are working towards the bigger picture, it is easy to momentarily forget the individual – which is why our group has a voluntary Wildlife Officer. Phil, a long-term volunteer, is tasked with keeping an eye on the interests of wild creatures as we are working, and making sure that (for instance) long grass is checked for snoozing hedgehogs before we cut it down.

118

Working by hand helps, too. For example, at Thornton church a couple of years ago, we took a tumbledown dry stone wall down by hand, prior to building it again. Had the dismantling been done by a digger, a great many frogs and toads would have been crushed. As it was, they were brought to safety in the careful hands of our volunteer team! If you would like to join us and try something new, contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

CHESS PUZZLE

WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN THREE Some games of chess seem to go on and on. Although this is an endgame position that’s been made up, White still has the challenge to finish it off as quickly as possible. Otherwise Black may queen a pawn and get a draw. As in life, it’s often worthwhile taking some care when a difficult situation has arisen. If that’s taxed your brain, why not have some fun? Join us at the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby, every Thursday at 7.30pm. Whether you’re a junior, a beginner, or an expert, you are most welcome. Look us up at www.ashbychess.com for more details and team news. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
