NEWS As many of you will have already heard, the Town Council has decided to secure ownership of the former Grammar School playing field from Leicestershire County Council. The Town Council will secure a loan from the Public Works Loan Board to purchase the field. Councillor John Coxon commented; “The field forms part of an important green wedge in the centre of the town and now future generations will be able to continue to enjoy the fantastic views of Ashby Castle from the Bath Grounds. Acquisition by the Town Council will protect this area from any future proposed development.” The planned regeneration of North Street and the development of what will become known as the ‘Cultural and Leisure Quarter’ of Ashby will start soon as part of the Ashby Project. This will begin with the demolition of the old Health Centre and the addition of 60 car short stay car parking spaces and will continue

with work to enhance the approach to Hood Park Leisure Centre and improved access. Improvements will not be restricted to North Street, however, with plans to look at opportunities for Market Street and our open areas as well. Shaping groups will be pulled together to define these in more detail. Support and input from local residents and businesses alike are welcomed. Work is also now under way on renovating St Helen’s church yard with landscaping of the garden, tree clearance, new lighting and a general revamp of the area which is a main thoroughfare for many local residents. Finally, the 17/18 council budget has now been set and a 6% increase in community tax agreed. This equates to 8p a week for a Band E property and is required for a number of reasons. This includes: The purchase of the playing field Operational efficiency costs which cover improvements to the Grange Road depot A pensions deficit The need to cover the reduction of the District Council Local Tax Support Fund which is being reduced. Details will be confirmed in your Community Tax letters. Dates for Town Council meetings are published on the Community Board pages of Ashby Life each month. The public are welcome to attend and there is always a slot for public questions. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SPOTLIGHT ON...

People Express

empowers people through the arts, creativity and fun!

Every month we turn the spotlight on a local charity and tell you more about the people behind the scenes, what they hope to achieve and who the charity can help. Then we let you know how you can become involved. In this month’s issue we introduce People Express; a little arts organisation with big ambitions, based in South Derbyshire. They aim to make the arts fun and encourage people of all ages and abilities to join in based on the understanding that actively taking part and creating art work that you are proud of, that others celebrate and that surpasses your own expectations can be a life changing experience. People Express was set up in the 1990’s and at first focused on providing the arts as a leisure activity. However, they soon became involved in ‘community arts’ which saw them pioneering projects that challenged people’s prejudices around the creative abilities of people with autism, celebrating the contribution older people can make to culture and making amazing films with young people who were described as having ‘challenging behaviour’. The group now work with professional artists who specialise in; creative writing, film-making, photography, digital arts, Indian dance, African drumming, willow-weaving, printing, pottery, street dance, drama, light graffiti, mosaics, textiles, sculpture, circus arts and DJing, to name but a few. Last year alone they provided 285 creative workshops, which were all free to attend and over 5,000 participants took part. Some of these attendances will be at one-off workshops at festivals or events, but many involve longer relationships being built with participants attending over weeks or even years. The programmes change and grow to respond to the needs of the people involved in the project. For example in some instances People Express will help to find the right professional artist to work with a group and offer support to enable them to lead their own project so that individuals can gain confidence, experience of decision making and practical skills that will enable them to sustain their projects themselves. This often leads to the groups setting up a new project on their own. One example of this is Graham Rodgers, who has

26

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

been diagnosed with Aspergers. Graham set up the Swadlincote Aspergers Society’s (SAS) with support from People Express. SAS successfully applied for funding for ‘The Big Welcome Cafe’ which offers weekly creative workshops for vulnerable adults. Visit swadaspies.wordpress.com for more details. He comments; “‘I never thought that I would be applying for grants and putting them to good use by running a group. I am better in my life and better in my confidence. Some people have real trouble expressing themselves, then you see their artwork and you see who they really are.” People Express believe that everyone has creative skills and the ability to design, make, create or perform their own work. Their workshops and classes mean that everyone has the chance to try their hand at something completely new or pick up a skill lost long ago. If you would like to join in with their activities, they will be offering free workshops at festivals throughout the year, please see their website for details: www.people-express.org.uk

BODY MATTERS

Adopt the correct PRICE Strategy

People are sustaining acute injuries everyday while participating in sports or carrying out regular activities in their lives. An acute injury is one when there is a specific cause of injury such as a twisted joint, a pulled muscle, a sprained ligament or a collision and is usually associated with swelling, pain and bleeding. Those more serious injuries require immediate first aid and expert medical attention. However, the less serious acute injuries can usually, in the early phase, be treated safely at home using the PRICE principle.

PROTECTION REST ICE COMPRESSION ELEVATION PRICE will help to control the amount of swelling, prevent further injury and reduce pain and, if used in the first 48-72 hours after the injury, can have a dramatic effect on reducing healing time and enabling a quicker recovery. Protection Stop immediately doing the activity that caused the injury in the first instance. Depending on the injured area, find something to support it - whether it be a sling for a shoulder, a brace for a knee or ankle or the use of crutches if weight bearing on a limb is too painful. Supportive bandaging can be useful also. Rest In order to start the process of healing, the injured area needs to be off loaded and rested to be given the chance to heal without further damage, as pain subsides and the gradual phased return of activity returns. Ice This can be effective in limiting the amount of

bleeding and inflammation and involves applying ice for 20 minutes at a time to the area. Soft ice packs, crushed ice in a bag, or a bag of frozen peas are ideal as they mould to the contours of the injured area. Apply a damp cloth around the ice pack to prevent an ice burn. Do not put ice directly over a cut or contusion that needs medical attention. Compression When the ice pack is removed a compression bandage or tubigrip can be used to support the damaged structure and form a mechanical barrier to minimise swelling. Cohesive wraps and elastic bandages are ideal for this but require some care with application. Elevation In the immediate post injury stage, elevation will reduce the amount of blood flow to the area. In the case of a lower limb injury, putting the feet up on pillows to elevate them can help. By adopting the PRICE principle you will give your body a much better chance for optimal healing. Should you require any further assistance, seek the advice of a physiotherapist who can advise you more specifically on your post injury management. MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day 26th March

You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering ‘or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion.

The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more. By Susan Brookes- Morris

AMTG NEWS

Emerald Anniversary 1962-2017 – the first 55 years! This year the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group celebrate 55 years of entertaining local audiences. This month they reminisce about their launch, their growth over the years and their upcoming production…. The group first formed in 1962 as ‘The Ashbeian Gilbert & Sullivan Society’ presenting “The Mikado” at Ashby Town Hall. By 1973, they had renamed as ‘The Ashbeian Operatic Society’ and in 1977 they moved to The Ivanhoe College for their production of “Orpheus in the Underworld”. In 2004 the group changed their name to ‘The Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group’ reflecting the change of productions over the years, moving from operetta to musical theatre.

For the Society’s Emerald Anniversary they are presenting the ever-popular Lionel Bart musical “Oliver!” and expect to repeat their 2009 success by performing to sell-out audiences.

In 2012 the Society presented their 50th Anniversary Concert “The Best of Times”, and this was to be their last production at The Ivanhoe College.

A talented cast of 36 juniors – as the workhouse children and Fagin’s Gang – have joined the adult members and the cast list is complete with local canine actor Koby playing Bill Sykes’ dog, Bullseye!

The search for a new theatre home began and AMTG were fortunate to obtain the use of The 400 Hall at Repton School, with the first production there being “Hello, Dolly!” in October 2012.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Beautiful Sweet Peas Sweet peas are so easy to grow and ideal for the impatient gardener or a good starter for children who want to see results quickly. Flowering profusely, just a few packets of seeds will give you fresh posies of flowers daily for weeks. Traditionally a cottage garden plant, they are frequently used in all types of garden. They are particularly lovely by a door or a window where the scent can be frequently admired. Sweet peas were discovered by a Franciscan monk in Sicily in 1697. The original blossoms were smaller than we know today and were purple. They were bred enthusiastically and the frilly variety became available and gained popularity in the mid 19th century. As the Victorian fashion for bold showy flowers took hold, the sweet peas were bred more for size and visual impact, but at the cost of the scent. Then fashion changed and the appeal of traditional cottage garden flowers with the lovely scents returned again and, like fashion, the little sweet pea came full circle. Romantics are drawn to the sweet heady smell of these exquisite flowers and the benefits of flower scents always include lifting the heart into a happy state. Sweet-smelling cottage garden plants were written about by Charles Dickens when, in ‘Oliver Twist’, the young boy recovered his health in a garden of flowers that ‘perfumed the air with delicious odours’.

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk Of course sweet peas are a member of the Pea family – but they are definitely not edible and are poisonous. In spring you can grow annual sweet peas in pots or straight into the ground. The sweet pea seed is a dark brown round seed which looks like a peppercorn. The most common seed mix is a for flower colours of pink, red, purples and white, although single colour seed packs of these are available. Growing sweet peas is very easy and inexpensive. Choose your variety and plant in spring into pots or straight into the ground. Soaking the seeds first in tepid water or overnight to help rehydrate them encourages faster germination. I suggest planting 3-4 seeds per pot to make a bushier and more robust plant. Transport your little pots of plants into the garden when the risk of frost has gone. Cover the seeds with 1cm of compost and put them in a bright sunny spot. Sweet peas like moisture, so water regularly. Young seedlings become leggy, so encourage side shoots by pinching out the tops above a pair of leaves. The more shoots there are, the more flowers you will get. Sweet peas climb so they need plant supports. These can simply be canes tied together in a wigwam shape or a garden trellis. Once the plant is in flower, dead head it regularly to encourage more flowers. There is also a perennial sweet pea which produces a bright pink flower which weaves happily through plant supports or hedgerows, and although not scented, it is a feast for the eyes. Happy gardening!

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Hunting for treasure Towards the end of this month many of us will be pausing a little bit longer to check our change as we examine a new, twelve-sided, £1 coin. After more than 30 years the round £1 coin will start to be phased out of circulation from 28th March and by 16th October it will no longer be legal tender.

Daily life can be a bit like those worthless coins – we work hard and strive to progress yet discover some of the things we hanker after have no lasting value, in fact can often be counterproductive to our happiness. In the Bible Jesus says that the Kingdom of God is like someone who searched for beautiful pearls and found one of great price, or a man who searched and found treasure hidden in a field. Both eventually found something priceless.

According to The Royal Mint, the round £1 coin is too easy to copy and at least one in thirty in circulation is counterfeit. That’s a lot of coins which look and feel genuine but are actually worthless! The new coin has a number of features which should make it much more difficult to copy.

As we start our hunt to unearth the old £1 coins in our lives, perhaps we should also think about our search for eternal happiness of infinite value that God offers us. It’s a reward he wants us to find, so why not start the search now?

Now’s the time to begin your very own ‘treasure’ hunt! Start searching for all those round £1 coins so that you can be ready to exchange them for the new coins.

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Forest Rock and

Holly Heyes Wood This interesting walk takes you on a circuit from just outside Whitwick towards Mount St Bernard Abbey and around Whitwick Quarry before returning via a section of the Ivanhoe Way. There are some steep bits as you climb up through Forest Rock Wood and then down and around the side of the same hill and you’ll pass by two stone circles though they certainly aren’t Stone Henge! There are spots where you could enjoy a picnic in the later section of the walk, especially if you have lovely weather as I did. The walk takes around an hour and enjoys views of Whitwick Quarry and Mount St Bernard Abbey, plus a pretty stretch through Holly Heyes Wood.

chain fence surrounding Whitwick quarry on your right (this fence will feature later in the walk too). Keep straight along this path until you reach a T junction at the end of it where you can just see the top of Mount St Bernard Abbey in the distance. Turn right at this junction, following the yellow arrow along the next path. Ignore the public footpath that goes off to your left across the field, keeping straight on instead. You will have a wall on your left for a little way and then go steeply uphill. The quarry is now on your right and as you continue on this stretch you enjoy some fine views across it (5). Stay on this path as it curves right and is joined by another path coming in from the direction of Mount St Bernard Abbey which is off to your left.

5

1

The walk starts on Leicester Road in Whitwick. As the road goes up the hill out of Whitwick there is a grey dry stone wall on your left, look for a wooden kissing gate leading to Forest Rock Wood with a space where a couple of cars can pull in beside it. For Sat Nav users, the postcode LE67 5GJ should bring you to the start.

Shortly after the end of the quarry the path forks - take the unmarked right hand fork, turning so that the Abbey which was visible to your left is now behind you. Follow this along onto a wide track and keep bearing around to the right (away from the marked path). As you walk along this track (6) the green quarry fencing is on your right again and you will pass a permissive way arrow shortly before emerging in the car park of Midland Quarry Products.

2

6

Go through the kissing gate to Forest Rock Wood (1) and follow the path straight up the hill, it’s steep and there are a couple of tracks off to either side on the way up but keep to the main path all the way, passing by a large rock on your way up (2), until you emerge at a circle of small stones right on top of the hill. Walk into the centre of the circle - there are two paths leading off, take the smaller one that goes back down the side of the hill to your left. This path will curve around to the left and drop down through another rather overgrown, circle of stones before arriving at a T junction with a yellow footpath post with 2 arrows on (3). Curiously both of the arrows point the same way (to your left) - I wonder if someone put one on the wrong way? You actually want to turn the other way (to your right) so that the dry stone wall is on your left. Soon you will start to pass attractive rocky outcrops to the left (4) and you will see the green

Cross straight over the main road from the car park and then turn left for just a few yards – look for a narrow path on your right that leads through the trees and out into the corner of the field behind them. Go down this path and then up the field edge (narrow in places) to join a track at the end of the field beside three large stones.

3

50

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Turn right onto this track (you are now on the Ivanhoe Way) and following it you will pass by the entrance to Coalville Meadow, a site of special scientific interest (7), and then come to green metal barriers marking the entrance to Holly Hayes Wood. Keep straight ahead on the main path through the wood to emerge between houses on to St Bernards Road. Turn left, then first right and first right again to return to Leicester Road with the start of the walk just a short distance along to your right on the opposite side of the road.

7

4

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

BEAUTY TIPS with our resident beauty expert, Emma from Rose Beauty! Exercise is great for our minds and bodies but it’s also great for our skin too. Ammonia, urea, sugar and salts are all flushed out from the body via sweat. Here are some easy but extremely effective steps you can take to care for your skin pre, during and post exercise. Pre workout • Start with clean skin to avoid breakouts and congestion. • Keep skin clear of heavy make-up. If you want some coverage wear an oil free, light-weight, tinted moisturizer. And opt for waterproof mascara, it’s better than panda eyes! • Before (and after) you work out, spritz your skin with a hydrating toner or an anti- inflammatory, calming mist. During a workout • Keep long hair tied back and off the face and keep your fringe off your face. • Keep styling products away from hair line, they can cause breakouts. • Exercising outdoors is great but remember to apply sunscreen with a minimum of SPF20 at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure, then again every two hours.

Post workout It is best to wait a few minutes until the skin has cooled down before applying post workout products so they can absorb effectively. Take a cool shower and drink cool water to help reduce the skin temperature and stop it from purging waste via sweat. • Remove the sweat, dirt, pollutants, bacteria and dead skin. • Apply a hydrating booster or serum under moisturizer to replenish lost moisture and combat dryness. • If the skin is prone to redness after a workout, apply a calming serum. • Exfoliate and follow with a clearing or hydrating masque a couple of times per week to keep the skin clear of congestion and super smooth.

PET’S CORNER

Should your rabbit live

indoors or outside?

When deciding where to house your rabbit, it’s important to balance their sociable nature and preference for company with the need for space to exercise. Wherever you place them, one of the main aspects to consider is their safety.

Rabbits kept in a confined space sometimes develop skeletal problems, so it’s crucial to attach a good-sized exercise area to the hutch. This also allows you to see more of your pet, and makes cleaning easier.

Living inside With so many potentially dangerous objects in your home, including cables that can be nibbled through and houseplants that are poisonous, you’ll need to give careful thought to where your rabbit will live indoors.

Their outdoor home should be sheltered from direct sunlight and strong winds, and offer protection from other pets or animals that roam around at night.

They’re very sensitive creatures, but also naturally inquisitive, which can lead them into danger if left unsupervised for too long. A rabbit can live for up to 10 years, so it’s a long-term commitment and not the easy option.

Regardless of whether they live indoors or outside, your rabbit will need plenty of space to hop around and play with toys that stimulate their naturally curious and intelligent nature.

An outdoor home An outdoor hutch should allow enough space for them to stand on their hind legs, stretch out whilst lying down, and have a substantial run attached. They will also need a quiet area to rest and sleep, away from view.

HOME SWEET HOME If you are retired or planning for your retirement, don’t ignore your biggest asset! If you are a home owner, aged 55 or over and a UK resident, then you could release a lump sum from your property through Equity Release. What is Equity Release? Put simply, Equity Release allows you to release some of your home’s value as a tax free lump sum without having to sell the property. How much equity you can release is dependent on factors such as your age, the value of your home, and of course, how much money you require. The money you release is tax free and can be spent on almost anything you choose; for example, home improvements, to cover daily living expenses, the holiday of a lifetime, or even an early inheritance for your children. Most Equity Release schemes have no element of monthly repayment whatsoever for the borrower, and the outstanding loan plus interest accrued is

usually repaid from the sale value of your home on death, or if you move into long term care. However, if you prefer to repay the loan, there are various options available, and your Financial Adviser will be able to help you choose the most suitable option based on your current and future needs. Providers who are registered with the Equity Release Council offer a ‘no negative equity guarantee’, which means that the outstanding amount owed can never exceed the value of your home, thereby offering you further peace of mind. Releasing equity from your home is a big decision and there are many things to consider before deciding if Equity Release is right for you. If you would like to find out more, please contact Tim Whelan on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation Equity released from your home will be secured against it.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Let’s get

Real!

As we strive for a healthy and fit body and mind, we are naturally drawn to the toned and lean bodies we see in the media as something that we should aspire to. These magazine pictures, the images on Facebook and Instagram, can either make us more determined, or more unhappy about ourselves. Well, let me shed some light. Firstly, the clear majority of these images are created and crafted by art directors and magazine editors. By this I mean most of the pictures are staged shots of athletes, with great lighting, tanned bodies and plenty of make-up. If you were to see the model in real life, its likely you wouldn’t even recognize them as the same person in the photo! Now I’m not trying to tell you that these guys and girls aren’t in great shape because they most certainly are, and even I look at some of them and feel inspired, but let’s get real. Most of these models have been training for

10 years plus and have a wealth of experience. Their diet is incredibly strict and most of all, it’s their job to look as they do. In the real world, we can’t live in the gym 7 days a week, we also have to be realistic about our diets – juggling it with family needs - and have lots of other commitments that may have to take priority, such as children, work and care-giving. So, what does it take to get a cover model body?

Number one comes diet

There is absolutely no way you can get the body of your dreams without paying some serious attention to what you eat. Depending on the result that you want, will determine how strict you need to be. For example, if you want to get extremely lean with a 10% bodyfat then you can’t afford any slip ups at all. On the other hand, if you want to get fairly lean and have a little shape and definition of your muscles then a consistent 80/20 rule diet will work. 80% good 20% not so good. Still this will require a lot of consistency for many months and/or years. You just can’t eat bad foods regularly and get a great body, sorry!

84

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

Secondly comes the training plan

If you want a great body, training once per week will improve your fitness and health a little but to achieve that killer body, you need to invest in longterm, consistent training. . You need to be hitting the gym 3-5 times a week and train with intensity and a determination to succeed. Again, training once to twice per week is extremely beneficial and will change your body considerably, but it may not be enough to get you that magazine cover model body you may be after.

So, now here’s my advice?

First, ask yourself what you want to look like, what is your goal. Is it just to tone and improve your general fitness or do you dream of an amazing beach body. Once you determine your realistic aim, you then need to look at how much time can you devote to your diet and training. After this, seek advice and help from the professionals. By this I mean that when I started training I had no idea what I was

doing. I knew what I wanted to look like but had no idea on how to achieve the result. But I studied intensely, trained religiously, experimented, made mistakes and now have a wealth of experience that myself - and my team - want to pass on to you. A good professional can help you bypass the mistakes and get straight into the right training and nutritional habits that will save you a lot of time and effort. We’ve done the background work, so now you can benefit from our extensive knowledge. I love what I do. I have exercised since I was 13 years old and it has enriched my life immensely. I would love for you to experience the positive energy that I feel. Why not pop down to see me and my team at Fitness Republic and see what wefitness can tips do for you.

BOOK REVIEWS

Gifts for

mum

Looking for the perfect present for Mother’s Day? Maybe we can help… Paris for One and Other Stories

From the Heart

Jojo Moyes

A poignant coming of age novel, From the Heart is set at a time when many of the freedoms we now take for granted could cost you dearly. Olive wants to be free to follow her heart. But an unplanned pregnancy gives her an almost impossible choice – marry a man she doesn’t love, or give up her baby. Beautifully written, and painfully emotive, this is a book to devour in one evening.

These 11 short stories are filled with romance, humour and charm. As we’ve come to expect from Moyes, great plots and believable characters make this a really enjoyable read. The title story follows Nell as she finds herself alone in Paris and has to break out of her comfort zone. Perfect for mums who sometimes only have 10 minutes to relax with a book and a cuppa.

Planet Earth II Stephen Moss Millions tuned in to watch David Attenborough reveal some of the most spectacular natural wonders the Earth has to offer. VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

Choosing our

next play

Have you ever wondered how we decide what plays to put on each year? What is taken into consideration and where do suggestions comes from? A play can be suggested by any member of Ashby Dramatic Society and, in theory, by a non-member such as a member of the audience, but this does not usually happen. A copy of the script must be submitted to our Play Reading Committee which consists of 7 people. There must also be a director who is keen and willing to direct the play. The play will then be read by at least five members of the Committee who then give it a score out of 10 under five different headings. If the average score is high enough it will be passed to the Management Committee for consideration. On average, Play Reading Committee members read one play a month and will usually be expected to read it within a week.

One member of the current Committee is Paul Smith who is well known to our audiences as an actor and director. He told us that he enjoys reading the plays and finds it interesting to hear other people’s opinions on them. He particularly enjoys seeing a play progress from the printed page to the moment when it comes to life on the stage. Our next production is Be My Baby by Amanda Whittington which opens on 20th April. We’ll tell you more about that in next months’ issue of Ashby Life. Ashby Dramatic Society welcomes potential new members. Join them at Club Night on any Monday evening from 8pm and perhaps help them achieve another 300 successful and sparkling productions.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS

How to make jam – easily! For many people, jam making is as much a passion as it is a hobby. It is a wonderful way of preserving seasonal fruit to be enjoyed the whole year, while some jam-makers simply enjoy giving their decorated jars as thoughtful gifts. For a first attempt at jam-making, I have created an easy recipe using a few plums which should yield a 1lb (454g) jar of jam. You will need: 12oz (340g) of plums (stones removed) 12oz (340g) of granulated white sugar 1 tablespoon of water Before preparing the fruit, place a small plate in the fridge. This will be used to check the setting point later.

100

1. Wash plums and cut into quarters. 2. Place fruit together with the water in a heavy based pot. Add the lid and bring to the boil. 3. Simmer on a very low heat until the plums have softened (approx. 20mins) stir every now and then to prevent fruit sticking and burning. 4. Now remove the saucepan lid, keep on a low heat and add the sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar has dissolved. 5. Turn up the heat until the mixture comes to a rapid boil. 6. Boil for around 6 minutes until setting point is reached. To test, take the pan off the heat and place a teaspoon of jam on the chilled plate. Allow to cool and push your finger through the jam. It should wrinkle up as it starts to congeal. 7. Ladle the hot jam into a sterilised jar. Et Voila! A delightful jar of homemade plum jam. Enjoy! Thanks to Tina from the Toolbox for sharing her recipe and jam-making expertise!

RECIPE

CARAMELISED ONION AND GOATS’ CHEESE

pizza

S E RV E S Ready 4 in 1 hour

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. YOU WILL NEED: 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle

l

2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced

l

2 tsp brown sugar

l

2 x 145g packets pizza base mix

l

2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs

l

2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced

l

5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TOP TIP Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

l

GET STARTED

1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and

add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. 3. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn 112

up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes.

4. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

NOT JUST GOOD WITH NUMBERS

NEW FLAT RATE SCHEME - DOES THIS AFFECT YOU? In the Autumn Statement, The Chancellor announced that a new Flat Rate Scheme category would become effective from April 2017, called the ‘limited cost trader’. A business is a ‘limited cost trader’ if its VAT inclusive expenditure on goods is: • Less than 2% of their VAT inclusive turnover in a prescribed accounting period; or • Greater than 2% of their VAT inclusive turnover but less than £1000 per annum if the prescribed accounting period is one year (if it is not one year, the figure is the relevant proportion of £1000).

This change will affect many businesses. Should you wish to discuss how this VAT change will affect your business, please contact Lisa Emery on 01530 416688

STORYTIME

The Friends of

Yarrow Avenue

“What time do you call this?” Gladys was straightening papers at her mahogany desk when Jean came shuffling into the study. “We can’t have dawdling - the Press are coming.” “Sorry,” said Jean, “I just bumped into Mr Pike at number three.” “How’s he?” Gladys asked. “He’s got these temporary dentures,” Jean said. “They’re absolutely huge. He reminds me of that old cartoon dog, what’s his name?” “False teeth, whatever the size, are hardly an excuse for leaving his bin out,” Gladys muttered tartly. “Did he have anything to say for himself?” “Nothing much.” Jean began unwinding her scarf. “Just some remarks about the tulips.” “Remarks?” Gladys sat upright. “What sort of remarks?” One thing she’d discovered since appointing herself Chair of the Friends of Yarrow Avenue was that there were always remarks. She’d thought her neighbours would be glad of a cheerful reminder that it was time to take down their outdoor Christmas lights, or attend to the guttering. Who wouldn’t be glad of a note suggesting that they tackle their privet? All she got was remarks. Things would change after today. A man from the Gazette was coming to photograph the tulips they’d planted on the avenue’s grass verge. She’d had her hair done specially. With the right publicity, Gladys imagined, she’d finally get the recognition she deserved. “He said that given where they’d been planted,” Jean settled herself at the card table which doubled as her desk, “he thought they were offensive.” “Offensive!” Gladys scoffed. “Who could possibly be offended by tulips?” “I know!” Jean picked up her stapler as though she’d never seen one before. “Have you walked down to admire them yet?” Gladys had not; she preferred to drive along the avenue. Her role was purely organisational. It was Jean, as secretary, who’d gone out in the freezing fog with a dibber to plant them last Autumn. “What’s wrong with them?” Gladys asked. “I imagine he’s got a wonderful view from his bay window.” “He has,” Jean said. “They look ever so colourful.” “So why are they offensive?” Gladys asked. “They’re not. At least, I don’t think they are.”

“What aren’t you telling me?” Gladys narrowed her eyes. “Don’t bother taking your coat off, we’re going to have a look.” Gladys strode through the hall with Jean hurrying behind her. “At first, I decided to plant them so they spelled GOOD DAY!” Jean said. Gladys froze. “Please tell me you didn’t?” She imagined some dreadful municipal park planting scheme. “I didn’t,” Jean said. Gladys breathed a sigh of relief, and set off down the garden path. “I just planted GOO.” Jean stammered. “I see.” Gladys marched purposefully towards the corner of the avenue. “So the tulips just say GOO?” “Well no,” Jean continued. “I remembered you’d said we should promote our residents’ association. So after GOO, I began to spell out FY – you know for the…” “Friends of Yarrow Avenue,” Gladys interrupted. A little tacky, she thought, but at least people would know who was responsible for the tulips. “Yes,” Jean said, catching her breath. “Only I ran out of bulbs before I could do the A.” “Please tell me my flowers don’t spell the word GOOFY?” Gladys cried. They turned the corner to see poor Mr Pike and his temporary false teeth with the photographer from the Gazette. “Goofy!” Jean laughed cheerfully, “Yes, that was the cartoon dog’s name.” The front page of the Gazette the next day was indeed all about the Friends of Yarrow Avenue and their tulips, finally giving Gladys exactly the type of recognition she deserved.

CHESS PUZZLE

White to play and “Sorry, I missed that!” is often what you say when a person is speaking in a strong regional accent, like the Glasgow twang. The vowels are different and it’s difficult to understand. Or you might miss seeing something obvious. In this position Magnus Carlsen, the world chess champion, missed an easy win. Instead he played 1.Bf7+ and it ended in a draw.

What should he have played against Anish Giri in the 2017 Tata tournament?
