LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS On Wednesday 1st November the brand new M&S Food store opened its doors to an eager crowd of Ashby residents. We were lucky enough to be invited along to meet Chris the new store manager and find out more about what the store has to offer. The store itself may not be as big as neighbouring stores such as Fosse Park in Leicester but it has close to the full food range and masses of warehouse storage to support their Click & Collect service. As well as stocking up on food and drink the store can be used to collect clothing and home orders and more importantly right now, Christmas food orders. 55 new local jobs have been created throughout the store, the warehouse, the in-house bakery and the 24-seat café. Chris the store manager explained to us that he is keen for the store to become an integral part of the Ashby community. We asked Chris how he felt about the new store “It’s an exciting time. We have some great products available, in particular the new Paddington Bear

range to tie in with the new film release and plenty of Christmas gifts.” And what makes it different to other food stores? In Chris’s opinion; “The quality of our products and our customer service which is second to none.” See what you think, if you haven’t already been in store head down to 1 Smithy Road, Ashby de la Zouch. Opening hours are 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Advanced Electrolysis

Advanced Cosmetic Procedures (ACP) uses shortwave diathermy to remove a large variety of skin blemishes such as skin tags, blood spots, thread veins, spider naevi, warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, milia, epidermoid cysts, age spots and other benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions.

Skin Tag Removal

Many people have skins tags which can be quickly and safely removed using ACP. These benign tumours typically grow to about the size of a grain of rice but can be as big as a raisin or even larger. They may be flesh coloured or pigmented and some are pedunculated (grow on a fleshy stalk). They can be successfully removed by ACP leaving Most ACP treatments give superb results with smooth skin once the area has completely healed. most blemishes being completely removed. Even quite large skin defects can be treated so as to leave little or no flaw, particularly when compared to the scarring that remains following traditional surgical removal.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

One Theatre, Two Upcoming Performances The Venture Theatre has two performances coming up in 2017 and 2018 which we can’t wait to perform to both our regular audience members and newcomers. There is something for everyone in Danny Champion of the World, a Roald Dahl book adapted for the stage by David Wood. Join Danny as he learns pheasant poaching is going on in the very woods behind his father’s petrol station. Danny The Champion of the World will be performed on 23rd to 25th November and 29th November to 2nd December. For the first time there will be matinee performances on both Saturdays. Casting has already taken place for our February production, One Man Two Guvnors by Richard Bean. This play is a modernised version of A Servant to Two Masters which avid members may remember the Venture Theatre performing back in December 2003. Described by the Guardian as “A triumph of visual and verbal comedy” we hope to have every member of the audience laughing along.

One Man Two Guvnors will run from 22nd to 24th of February and 28th February to 3rd March 2018. Tickets are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre and online at www.ticketsource. co.uk/ashbydramaticsociety. While you’re at the Tourist Information Centre you can also book tickets for our Jazz club, the next performance by The Ockbrook Big Band takes place on Saturday 9th December.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Let’s cut to the chase!

Ok, no more Mr. Nice Guy. Let’s bust these diet and exerccise myths that are keeping you from getting the results you are desperately looking for.

1. Eating after 6pm will store fat

Your body’s ability to gain weight and store fat is down to what you eat and in particular how much you eat, in comparison to the energy you expend and has nothing to do with when you eat.

2. Cardio is the best way to lose fat

While Cardio probably does burn calories quicker than weight training it’s not necessarily the be all and end all in terms of fat loss, the more muscle your body has the more calories you will burn at a rest state, therefore a good mix of weights and cardio is beneficial for fat loss.

3. Carbs make you fat

Carbohydrate’s themselves won’t make you fat, overeating carbs will make you fat as would overeating on anything. Carbs are a macronutrient meaning the body needs them in relatively large amounts in order to function correctly and they are a great source of energy.

4. Women will get bulky doing weights

This is just not true, women genetically don’t have high levels of testosterone required to build high amounts of muscle mass. Weight training will improve your strength, muscular endurance and lead to that toned shape you

strive for, most of the fitness cover models you see, will be hitting the weights hard and heavy, don’t be afraid of lifting heavy weights.

5. Missing breakfast will help you lose weight

Much the same as eating after 6pm doesn’t cause you to gain weight, eating breakfast in itself won’t make you lose weight. Many “fitness guru’s” advocate that breakfast is the most important meal of the day if you want to lose fat, however, it’s the total number of calories consumed in a day that will determine whether you gain or lose weight. Eating breakfast is a good way to regulate your hunger so you don’t over eat at lunch or dinner.

6. The more equipment a gym has the better it must be

The amount of equipment a gym has bears no relation to how good it is, as it is what you do with it that counts! Great equipment with a bad training program equals no results. The quality of your training plan is paramount to helping you get results. You can have a great training programme using no equipment at all!

7. Killing myself in the gym is the best way forward Consistency over a period of time is the best way to get the results you crave, killing yourself so you’re too exhausted to function may seem like a great training approach, but if this stops you being able to train consistently it isn’t going to help you. BODY MATTERS

Move More... As an Osteopath my mission is to provide the best possible health care for my patients by providing health advice and education. This month I am going to talk about the importance of moving more and how this can be beneficial not only for your muscles and joints, but also in reducing your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. How Movement Helps Your Muscles and Joints 1. Your joints are bathed in a membrane which produces synovial fluid. Its job is to lubricate your joints. Movement encourages this fluid to circulate around your joint and keep it ‘oiled’ and healthy. This slows down the wear and tear process. 2. When we are moving our heart pumps faster. This increases the blood flow throughout your body, increasing the amount of oxygen and other nutrients which are brought to your muscles and joints. Just as important is that this increase in blood supply will also help clear any waste products away. 3. Movement also strengthens the muscles, ligaments and tendons which support the joints. Therefore they stabilise the joints more efficiently, dampening down shock and reducing wear and tear changes.

50

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

How can I move more? As a rule we all know we should be ‘exercising’ more. The recommendation is that we should be doing 30 minutes of activity a day. But what does this really mean, and how can we realistically schedule it into our busy lives. The good news is that just 10 continuous minutes of brisk walking counts as physical activity. Brisk walking is simply walking faster than you would do normally, which gets the heart pumping, makes you feel more energetic and helps to improve your mood. Setting realistic goals starting with just 10 minute bursts of brisk walking could over time improve your joint health and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Public Health England has set up a campaign called active 10. Their website www.nhs.uk/oneyou/ active10 includes tips and encouragement to help you fit ten-minute brisk walking sessions into your daily routine.

As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition. For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book and appointment please call Sarah Kavanagh or Tristan Hill on 01530 440 442 e mail contact@ashbyosteopath.com. contact@ashbyosteopath com Please feel or e-mail free to visit www.ashbyosteopath.com

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

FINANCIAL ADVICE LEAVES PEOPLE £40K BETTER OFF New research by the International Longevity Centre1 and Royal London has produced some interesting findings that highlight the benefit of advice when taking major financial decisions. The report demonstrated that those who receive financial advice are on average £40,000 better off than those who don’t. The report, entitled The Value of Financial Advice, looked at the impact taking advice had on the finances of various defined groups of people. The first group was made up of the affluent who have more wealth, are likely to be homeowners, and be educated to degree level. The second group was made up of those who are just about managing, single, renting and less well educated. These groups were each subdivided into those who received advice and those who didn’t. AFFLUENT BUT ADVISED This group accumulated on average £12,363 (or 17%) more in liquid financial assets, and £30,882 (or 16%) more in pension wealth than those who were affluent but hadn’t received advice. JUST GETTING BY BUT ADVISED Here a similar picture emerged. This group accumulated on average £14,036 (or 39%) more in liquid financial assets, and

52

£25,859 (21%) in pension wealth than those who were just getting by but not advised. These findings make a clear case for taking financial advice, and quantify what this could mean in monetary terms. Sadly, many people who buy complex investment, insurance and pension products don’t take the hugely important step of asking a financial adviser for help before making their decision. Throughout our lives, we are all likely to face the need to take financial decisions that can have a major impact on our wealth. Getting a good mortgage deal, taking out the right pension plan, or investing wisely for the future are all cases in point. Comparing products that you know little about can be confusing, stressful and time-consuming. Working with us means that you’ll be benefitting from informed advice, backed up by upto-date market intelligence and years of practical experience. So, if you’d like help with life’s important financial milestones, or feel that you could benefit from an assessment of your current circumstances and would like help devising a road map for your financial future, then please contact Ian Staley Financial Adviser at DGS Independent Financial Planners Limited on 01530 567020.

NEW Local Walks Book

Walks for all in the Heart of the Forest By Liz Roberts

What better way is there to relax than getting outside and enjoying a stroll in the fresh air? Here in the National Forest we are in a unique position - over the last 20 years this area has been totally transformed. Woodlands have been planted and permissive paths created, tracks have been built and nature reserves opened. All of this amazing work now gives residents and visitors access to a wide variety of walks. We always feature a walk within the magazine and know that many readers enjoy following them. Now Liz Roberts, who writes our walks, has produced a full colour book featuring 12 local walks as well as a whole host of ideas for family outings or day trips. The book is aimed at anyone who lives in, or is visiting, the National Forest. The walks are centred around five popular tourist attractions in the heart of the forest and vary from a short 45 minute stroll through to a couple of hours of exploring. As well as routes suitable for all ages and abilities you’ll find information about parking, refreshments and other nearby attractions.

ON THE BEAT

Street Smart Now that the clocks have gone back and the walk to and from school has become darker it’s more important than ever to stress the importance of safety to your children. Please discuss these important points with your children to help them stay safe when out in the community.

Safer strangers

A safer stranger is a person who is working at their job that helps people. They are likely to be in uniform which is identifiable. Some examples of this are supermarket staff, police, paramedics, and staff in a bank.

Trusted adults

Trusted adults are people your child can turn to when they have a problem. A trusted adult could be parents, family, teachers or someone you and your child knows well such as their dance teacher or sports coach.

Run and tell a trusted adult

Tell your child to run to the closest safe place they know if they are in a situation where they feel unsafe. This could be home, a family member’s address or a safer building, and encourage them to tell someone what has happened.

Avoid areas you don’t know

Explain to your child they should always play in areas they know and they should always tell an adult where they are going and who with.

Never take things from a

stranger or get in the vehicle with a stranger Tell your child to never accept anything from a stranger, because you never know where a stranger could take them or what their intentions are.

Go home or to a safer building

Make sure your child knows what a safer building is. A safe building is a place that is well known and

identifiable, including; banks, libraries, police stations, doctor’s surgeries.

Encourage children to play with

others Explain to your child that there is safety in numbers. It is always advised when children are playing out they should play with friends and in groups.

HEALTH TIPS

Fighting Colds and Flu:

Myths and Magic Cures

Colds can make our life a misery and flu can make us quite ill, particularly if we’re vulnerable due to our age or an existing condition. So it’s no surprise that a host of myths and supposed cures have sprung up around these ailments. Colds can make life miserable and flu can make us quite ill. But which cold and flu facts are true, and are there really any cures? If you have a high temperature, it’s the flu MYTH: Colds can sometimes cause a high temperature, although it’s usually short-lived and not above 38oC. However, sweats and chills normally indicate flu. It’s pointless to avoid someone with a cold or flu. You’ll get it anyway MYTH: Flu and colds are highly contagious, spread by air and direct contact, but you can stay germ-free by avoiding sufferers or by both practising good hygiene. • Clean hands and high-contact surfaces regularly (e.g. door handles, touchscreens), especially after touching the nose or mouth. • Don’t share cutlery, cups or towels. • Ensure the contagious person has tissues nearby to catch coughs and sneezes, and bin them immediately. They should use the ’vampire’ cough (into the inside of their elbow) if they’re caught tissue-less. Getting very wet and/or cold can give you a cold or the flu. MYTH (obviously): However, cold and wet conditions can put your body under stress, making it more vulnerable to germs. The flu vaccine gives you flu MYTH: The vaccine contains inactive viruses, but it may cause a temperature and aching for a while. If you’ve had a cold or flu for a while, you need antibiotics MYTH: Antibiotics don’t kill viruses. When a patient is ‘cured’ after a week’s antibiotics, in truth that extra week just allowed them to finally fight off their virus. Antibiotics are only useful if you get a secondary bacterial infection.

64

Magic Cures Prevention – Good hygiene works. Boost your immune system to help you resist viruses or fight them off by reducing stress and getting adequate sleep. Regular zinc reduces the number of colds children get and should work for adults too. Regular probiotics and garlic may have some preventative effect, but research is sketchy. Vitamin C and echinacea really don’t prevent colds and any symptom reduction is negligible to non-existent. However, Vitamin C may be of limited benefit to people already under physical stress (e.g. marathon runners). Decongestants and antihistamines: when used separately, they have very little or no effect. However, when used together, particularly with painkillers, they may cause a slight improvement in symptoms. Ipratropium bromide (Rinatec) nasal spray does seem to alleviate symptoms, particularly a runny nose. If you have a cold or flu, stay hydrated, alleviate the symptoms and take heart - researchers are working to modify peptides that can combat cold viruses.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

The History of Christmas Traditions Every year, some people mourn the loss of traditional, more faith-based Christmas celebrations. Yet most December 25th traditions are far less Christian and much more recently adopted in the UK than they may think. Celebrating on December 25th Jesus’ birth date isn’t documented and the gospels of Matthew and Luke, written long after his death, give contradictory clues. Some scholars say the sheep on the hillside and the census suggest good weather, indicating spring to early autumn. So why is Christmas celebrated on the 25th of December? Midwinter festivals abounded by the time Christianity took hold. There were winter solstice celebrations such as Yule and Koleda, and the Roman festivals of Saturnalia (which included decorating your home with evergreens – sound familiar?) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, ‘birthday of the unconquered sun’, on December 25th. It was easier for early proponents of Christianity to introduce it into these longstanding festivals than to persuade people to give them up. The first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine, began celebrating Christmas on December 25th in 336. A few years later, Pope Julius I declared it the official date to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Some scholars believe he also chose this date to honour Hanukkah and Jesus’ own religion, Judaism. Orthodox and Coptic Christians celebrate Jesus’s birth on January the 7th - the ‘original’ December 25th. Our December 25th moved when we adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Yule Logs Today, Yule logs have been mainly superseded by log-shaped chocolate cakes here, but neither are connected to Jesus’ birth. Yule logs were part of the Scandinavian Yule celebration, beginning at the winter solstice and running into January. Yule logs were burned to mark the return of the sun and festivities continued until they burned out. Celts also burned a Yule log, believing it persuaded the sun to return and bestowed good luck on those who dragged it from the forest. Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe Evergreens were used in winter solstice festivals to bring good luck and signify the coming spring. The tradition of hanging mistletoe in the house is an

70

ancient Druid custom to ward off evil spirits, but in Norse mythology it’s also a symbol of love (hence kissing under the mistletoe). Christmas Pudding The original ‘Christmas pudding’ was frumenty, a thin 14th century porridge containing raisins, currants, prunes, wine, spices, beef and mutton. However, by around 1650, people ate plum pudding, and by Victorian times, it was similar to the modern-day Christmas pud. The Christmas Tree Evergreen fir trees have been used in winter festivals for thousands of years to symbolise the coming spring and everlasting life, although they were often hung upside down from the ceiling rather than stood upright. ‘Christmas trees’ emerged in the 1500s in town squares but took time to come into people’s houses. The Royal Family had one from Georgian times, but an 1848 photo of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family gathered around theirs popularised the idea. A Merry Christmas Christmas wasn’t celebrated widely in the UK until the Middle Ages, when it was predominantly a time for merrymaking and feasting on animals too expensive to feed through winter. It was later banned for many years by the Puritans for its Pagan origins. It began to recover in Georgian times with a focus on charity and gift-giving, paving the way for the idealised Victorian Christmas described by Charles Dickens.

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

Let there be light… With the cold winter months fast approaching, now’s the time to get the house warm and cosy. In this issue, we will talk about lighting and how that can transform your living space. Lighting is considered one of the most important elements of a successful interior project. Well-designed lighting will not only enhance the decor but help to create a functional interior space. There are many forms of interior lighting, they can include wall, ceiling, and cabinet mounted fixtures, as well as table and floor lamps. Interior lighting is often described as layers, with each of them performing a specific function. It is vital to combine ambient lighting, task lighting and decorative lighting to create a room in which you can relax or entertain your guests with ease. In this photo the lighting design focuses more on creating a relaxing and sophisticated ambience. The combination of down-lights and ceiling pendant lights have been used carefully to enhance textures for the walls, furniture, flooring and book display.

Interior tips with FABCO in-store designer Eddie Ong Down-lights over the fireplace help in providing ambience as well as creating a focal point. The down lights over the built-in bookcases act as task lighting for selecting a book as well as further enhancing the ambience. The warm glow from both the ceiling pendant light and down lights truly transform this otherwise dark and dingy room into a classy and sophisticated living area. Finally, why not add a few candles to create a romantic feel and spend some quality evenings with your loved ones?

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

Solutions to all puzzles can be found on page 132.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE Christmas is a time of much activity here at St Helen’s, with Christingle and carol services for children, the beautiful musical delights of the St Helen’s choir at Advent and Christmas carol services, the moving tradition of midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and a compline for New Year’s Eve. In addition to all of these regular and much-loved church activities, this Christmas we have our Heritage Project and our wonderful new Heritage Centre to enjoy. Because of this we will be having a special event to invite everyone to, joining in with Lottery funded projects all over the country. They will be allowing free access to museums and heritage sites, but as we don’t make a charge for entry, we thought it would be nice to invite you and one of your lottery tickets to share a mince pie and glass of mulled wine around our Christmas tree in the church on Wednesday, 13th December between 11am and 3.30pm. As we look back at a year well spent, with 17 days of public Heritage events, and our current series of evening talks which are proving very popular, we are also looking ahead to next year, busily

IN YOUR GARDEN

All Wrapped Up A ground frost is when the temperature of the ground falls below 0 degrees – below freezing point. An air frost is when the temperature of the air is below 0 degrees. Generally frost and persistent cold periods can damage or kill plants, however damaged plants can often come back well if the frosted wounds are cut back to new healthy growth in spring. A damaged plant will often pick up after an application fertiliser with Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Even if a plant is looking poor after a bad frost it is worth leaving it until early summer, as it could revive. Nature can sometimes be a battle and some frost damage in very cold years is inevitable. Snow is not necessarily a gardener’s enemy, as not only does it look pretty, but it does help to insulate plants from frosts. However very heavy snow left on a plant is damaging, so it is important to shake off excess snow. This will prevent the plant from becoming limp, misshapen and blackened. For winter, preventative measures in the garden to protect against the worst of weather do usually pay off. Choosing a plant which is hardy in the first

place saves lots of work and expense in years to come. Leave last year’s top growth on perennials (if it does not look too messy) as that old growth insulates and helps to protect the crown of the plant. Any small plants that you know are tender should be dug up and potted on to live in a greenhouse over winter As always, good mulching of organic matter works wonders around most plants. Evergreen plants in particular benefit from a layer of mulch to keep the soil around them frost free. This helps them to take moisture from their roots and prevent drying out and scorching of the leaves. Bay and Pittisporum are particularly vulnerable An East facing border with early morning sun can cause the frost to melt quickly and this can cause damage to plants with tender flower buds. Camellia and Magnolia in particular can suffer in this way. It may be unsightly but covering such a plant with black plastic will protect it from the bright sunlight, but remove the cover by mid morning. Outdoor containers really need to be frost proof so they don’t crack and break in cold weather. Hessian or bubble wrap will help insulate the base of the plant from freezing in prolonged cold spells. When the root ball is frozen the plant can’t take in any moisture. Bubble wrap is rather unsightly but hessian tied up neatly like a thick wrapping paper tied with a ribbon can look acceptable. Happy Christmas and New Year!

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

What’s at the heart of your Christmas? Christmas is often painted as a time of pure happiness and contentment – it can be a truly magical time. However, Christmas isn’t always everything we hope it to be, for some the reality is... squabbling over TV channels, indigestion, overspending on credit cards, friction in relationships, perhaps even loneliness from having no-one to spend Christmas with. For some, Christmas sadly doesn’t live up to expectations. If asked what makes us happy, we’d probably come up with a list of things like winning the lottery, achieving a promotion at work, finding an amazing bargain in the January sales, or enjoying an exotic holiday. Christmas, along with many of these things is very short lived and, just like that dream holiday, it’s over so very quickly. So is it really “Happy Christmas”? Does it really make us happy long term? God wants us to experience true happiness, but funnily enough in a way we’d least expect.

Jesus tells us that happiness comes from giving to others, putting other’s needs before our own and not being self obsessed. We have probably all experienced that great feeling when we’ve gone out of our way to help somebody else? This is just what Jesus was talking about. Why not see if it works? It doesn’t have to cost money. Perhaps invite that lonely neighbour to share your Christmas dinner, visit somebody in hospital, drop off a few festive groceries at the foodbank, or simply be a listening ear to someone with problems? Identify what’s at the heart of your Christmas this year and spread some genuine happiness by doing something that will really make a difference. BOOK REVIEWS

Indulgent Escapes Looking to escape the in-laws for a couple of hours? We may have found you the perfect book to indulge in.

Dark Matter Blake Crouch Jason Dessen hasn’t achieved all he planned to with his life, but on the whole he’s content. So when he’s kidnapped and escapes to find his home has changed, his wife isn’t his wife and his son doesn’t exist, he’ll stop at nothing to put things right. But is he the college professor he believes himself to be, or the genius scientist others seem to think he is? A really intriguing book, with a fast-paced storyline, lots of twists and turns and a very clever narrative. You won’t want to put this one down. How Hard Can It Be? Allison Pearson Teenage kids, ageing parents, a next-to-useless husband, menopausal woes – Kate Reddy has them all. And now she needs to get back into working life – a decade after leaving her stressful job as the manager of a hedge fund. No easy feat when you’re approaching 50. This is the sequel to the bestselling I Don’t Know How She Does It, but works just as well as a stand-alone novel. A brilliant read, it’s laugh-outloud-funny in its depiction of the trials and tribulations of the sandwich generation. The One John Marrs Imagine a world where a simple DNA test can help you to find your one true soulmate. Would you take it, even if you think you’ve already found love? The One follows five people in their search for their DNA match. One is desperate to start a family. One is head of a global company. One is already engaged. One is prepared to travel to the other side of the world to meet her match. And one is a killer. A real page-turner that will keep you reading until late into the night.

The Prime of Ms Dolly Greene E. V. Harte Dolly lives in a tiny house in London, with her 21 year old daughter. So far, so ordinary. But the way Dolly makes ends meet is anything but ordinary. Dolly is a tarot reader and when she hears about the discovery of a dead body, she can’t help but remember a recent client she had a very bad feeling about. But will the police listen to her suspicions? A light-hearted read that combines crime, humour, fantasy and romance in one engaging tale. All the Little Children Jo Furniss A family wild-camping trip turns into a fight to survive in this gripping debut novel. Marlene and her sister-in-law have taken their children to a forest for a short holiday before the start of term. When they spot columns of smoke in the distance, and not an electric light in sight, they start to suspect something has gone badly wrong. As the enormity of the situation unfolds, and Marlene finds more children in need of protection, she needs to decide how far she’ll go to protect her family. Gripping. The Betrayals Fiona Neill Sometimes there are four sides to a story. Daisy has just got her life back together after battling through years of OCD. But then a letter arrives addressed to her mother, which threatens to open old wounds and reveal the secrets Daisy has tried so hard to keep hidden. The Betrayals was awarded the Richard & Judy Book Club 2017 Thriller award, and it’s easy to see why. An emotive novel about the complexities of family life, mental illness, betrayals and the fallibility of memories.

RECIPE

SALMON AND MONKFISH

Filo Wreath

S E RV

ES 6 Read y 30 m in 1 hour inut chillin es, plus g tim e

This festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before. YOU WILL NEED l

Sunflower oil, for greasing

l

100g butter, melted

l

270g pack filo pastry, thawed if frozen 450g salmon fillet, skinned and diced

l l

450g monkfish fillet, skinned and diced

l

225g cooked peeled tiger prawns

l

2 tbsp lemon juice 3 tbsp chopped fresh dill

l l

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

l

Lemon wedges and dill sprigs, to garnish

Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so simply cut to fit. Don’t worry if they tear, just place another piece of buttered pastry on top to cover the tear.

GET STARTED

1.

Use the sunflower oil to grease a 1.2 litre capacity ring mould, then line the mould with cling film.

2.

Brush the sheets of pastry one by one with melted butter and use nearly all of them to line the ring mould. Overlap the pastry sheets slightly as you go and repeat the layers 3-4 times. Leave the excess pastry to drape over the side of the mould.

3.

Mix the salmon, monkfish and prawns in a large bowl and stir in the lemon juice and chopped dill. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4.

Spoon the fish mixture into the pastry-lined mould, pressing down gently. Fold the excess pastry in over the filling and top with more buttered sheets of pastry, cutting them to fit and completely cover the filling. Stamp small star shapes out of any remaining sheets of buttered pastry and place on a plate.

122

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

5.

Cover the ring mould and the plate with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour (or overnight). Carefully invert the ring mould onto a large baking sheet and then remove the mould and the cling film. Re-melt any remaining butter and brush all over the pastry.

6.

Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/fan 170C/Gas Mark 5 for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Bake the pastry stars on a separate baking sheet for 5 minutes until golden.

7.

Allow the wreath to stand for 5 minutes then transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the pastry d stars. Garnish with lemon wedges and dill sprigs.

PET’S CORNER

Take Extra Care of Your

Pets this Christmas

All the trimmings and paraphernalia of Christmas are wonderful for us, but they can represent a danger to your pet. So with this in mind, what in particular do you need to watch out for at this time of year?

Christmas decorations If your pet has a tendency to chew, be wary of your Christmas tree lights as they may cause electrocution. Glass baubles also break very easily and it’s difficult to spot the smaller shards of glass, which can easily lodge in a pet’s paws or mouth – a particular problem if your cat is prone to climbing the tree. Chocolate Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate has the highest amount, although milk chocolate also causes potentially lifethreatening symptoms if consumed. It’s a serious issue at any time of the year, but at Christmas the fact that you’re likely to have more chocolate in the house increases the risk.

Rich foods Turkey meat is too rich for many dogs – they struggle to digest this fatty food which can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. High fat foods in general tend to irritate your pet’s stomach and intestines, so it’s a good idea to stick to their usual diet as much as possible during the festive season. Whether your pet is timid or bold, providing a safe place where they can retreat from the noise and chaos of Christmas helps them to cope until their normal routine resumes.

CHESS PUZZLE

Thhe Ever The Evvergree r een en Gam ame me Karl Ernst Adolf Anderssen (1818 – 1879) was born in Wroclaw, Poland, and lived most of his life there. He’s famous for playing chess with a dramatic attacking style, and he won many top-class tournaments. In what’s now known as the Evergreen Game, he beat Jean Dufresne of Germany in 24 moves. This position is from the game. It looks bad for White because of the checkmate threat on g2. But it’s White to move, and Black is checkmated in four moves. How? For a fiesty game of chess and a festive drink at the bar, visit your local club. It meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 132 should you need it!
