Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Liver (Age) Spots Liver Spots or Solar Lentigo are generally associated with age and exposure to the sun and/or sunbed use. These areas of pigmentation range from pale to dark brown and are common on the face, arms, hands, neck, chest and shoulders. On those with thinning hair, they can also develop on the scalp. They normally increase in number and size after a person reaches the age of forty, hence the less flattering term, “Age Spots”. In spite of being benign and flat, many people consider them unsightly, especially as they are associated with aging. Dark ones can be very difficult to conceal with make-up and those on the hands can be distressing because they are easily seen.

Age Spot (on face)

Prior to any treatment, it is advisable to have age spots seen by a G.P. We are moving to Harby, near Melton Mowbray. I will be working in Loughborough until early August and hope to recommence in Harby in the late autumn. Please use my mobile number or email to contact me and check the website for updates. Many thanks. Apologies for any inconvenience.

WHY THE SELFEMPLOYED NEED A PENSION NUDGE Working for yourself has never been so popular. According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, there are around 4.8 million self-employed workers in the UK. Whilst many are young people seizing the opportunity to go it alone, some are in their 50s, 60s and even 70s. Being your own boss has many advantages, including the freedom to choose what type of work you do and when and where you do it. But it does mean that you need to make your own arrangements for your pension. Currently, four out of five self-employed people are approaching retirement with no pension provision in place. MAKING PENSIONS A PRIORITY - If you’re self-employed, day-to-day pressures of working for yourself can put saving for retirement at the bottom of your ‘to do’ list. However, it’s worth remembering that the new flat-rate state pension only adds up to around £8,000 a year, so if you want to enjoy a more financially-comfortable retirement, you will need to make your own pension arrangements too. The sooner you can start saving for a pension, the longer the money invested in your plan will have to grow. It’s worth considering the tax breaks currently available on pension savings. For example, you’ll get tax relief on

8

your contributions usually up to £40,000 a year. If you are a basic-rate taxpayer, when you pay £80 into your pension, £20 will be added by HMRC giving a total gross contribution of £100 into your pension. Higher-rate taxpayers can apply for relief at their highest marginal rate. Being self-employed can mean that your income is unpredictable, however the good news is that you can carry forward any unused tax allowance from the last three tax years. How much should you save to build up an adequate pension? The simple answer is probably as much as you can reasonably afford. If you were in an employer scheme, your employer might typically contribute 4% and you might be contributing a further 3% yourself. Under auto-enrolment the full rates (from April 2019) will be 3% minimum employer contribution and 5% employee, plus tax relief. Everyone’s circumstances differ, so it makes sense to get advice on the level of contributions you can make and the likely returns they would produce for you. Please contact Ian Staley Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Planners Limited on 01530 567020.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Ashby Round Table & Cardiac Risk in the Young Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group and tell you more about the work they do, upcoming fundraising events and how you can offer support. This month we take a closer look at a charity partnership between Ashby Round Table and Cardiac Risk in the Young….

a young girl (17) was screened and the doctors were able to identify an undiagnosed heart defect. The defect was so severe she was rushed to A&E in an ambulance and later treated (a pacemaker was fitted). The girl in question is now back leading a normal life but the consequences of her not undergoing screening are unthinkable. Nearer the time of the screening event the website address will be published both here in Ashby Life and through the Ashby Round Table Facebook page. When this link is available, the public will be able to log on, register their children or themselves and a timeslot will be allocated (free of charge).

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young (35 and under) people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Often there are no warning signs and no ill health. As these heart conditions are undetected they are rarely treated. CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) are a charity which raises funds nationally to hold screening events to detect such heart defects and treat them accordingly before the very worst happens. CRY also fund research into young sudden cardiac death and raise awareness of undetected cardiac conditions in the young. Ashby Round Table were made aware of a local case of such a tragic event and considered a donation to the CRY charity. It was then agreed a better course of action would be to raise the full £5,000 required to host a heart screening event here in Ashby.

So far Ashby Round Table are making good progress with both raising funds and also planning future fundraising events. However they do need your support. Please help them reach their total by donating whatever you can through the link below..

www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ ashbyroundtable Or pop along to their next fundraising event….a Bring and Buy Cake Sale/Coffee Morning/ Bake Off on Sunday 13th August from 10am to 12noon at The Lyric Rooms on Lower Church Street. For further details see www.facebook.com/ AshbyDeLaZouchRoundTable A further event (a world record attempt) is also planned for later in 2017. More details to follow on this.

The money raised will fund the equipment, medical staff and administration of the heartscreening event. The event will take place at the Castle Medical group on Burton Road on Saturday 27th January 2018 and will screen around 100 local residents between 14 and 35. At one of the past screening events held by CRY Ashby De La Zouch & District (507) Round Table are part of a national organisation for young men (aged 18-45) who meet regularly for events such as beer tasting, football golf, bike rides, climbing, curry nights etc, whilst giving back to the community through fundraising for charities such as BBC Children In Need, Rainbows, Air Ambulance and other local charities. If you are interested in knowing more about joining in call James on 07792 877 927.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS

Ashby estate agents Alexanders, sponsor NWLSSP Alexanders Estate Agents, who earlier this year opened their new office on The Green in Ashby, are excited to announce a new partnership with North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership (NWLSSP). The NWLSSP supports 43 schools across North West Leicestershire by providing pupils with high quality PE, sport and physical activity. Alexanders has made a commitment to the NWLSSP throughout 2017/18 with a donation for every property sold through its Ashby branch. Tom Smith, Senior Partner at Alexanders said: “The opportunity to support sport in local schools through the NWLSSP is superb. Growing up locally sport was a massive part of my school life. The work undertaken by the NWLSSP gives our local children the opportunity to participate and compete in a whole host of sports and activities.” Stuart Johnson, Director of Sport and Community Development at NWLSSP said: “We’re delighted to be working with Alexanders. There is clearly a commitment on their behalf to help us create and

sustain opportunities for local young people to take part in high quality PE, sport and physical activity. The additional support this agreement will bring will allow us to give more young people opportunities to gain sports leadership qualifications and increase the numbers in our Leadership Academy.” Tom added: “Since opening the doors to our new branch in Ashby-de-la-Zouch the response we have received from the town has been overwhelming. As an independent firm I feel strongly that we should support our local community and have made a commitment to give back through the NWLSSP.”

LEGAL TIPS

Myth Busting: Lasting Powers of Attorney Many people are unaware of how important Lasting Powers of Attorney are or have misconceptions about what they’re used for and how it relates to them. Lasting Powers of Attorney are arguably just as crucial as a will and with dementia becoming increasingly common, are becoming increasingly important. MYTH: Lasting Powers of Attorney are only for the elderly FALSE! They cover you for ‘loss of capacity’ which could be physical as well as mental. If you are unable to make decisions for yourself for any reason then they are applicable. MYTH: If I lost capacity my family would automatically take over FALSE! Unless you have already arranged Lasting Powers of Attorney then decisions will be made for you by the Court of Protection and fees are

chargeable for this. Your loved ones would have to apply for a Deputyship Order which is a costly and lengthy process. MYTH: If I complete it then my attorneys will take over even if I haven’t lost capacity yet! FALSE! You must be medically diagnosed as having lost capacity for them to take over or must have willingly decided you do not have capacity Sometimes making sure you have the right protection in place for your family is difficult and you’re unsure which way to turn. This is why we offer a free legacy planning review in order to give you an informed choice so you can make the right decision for you and your family. Fitness Republic

Get to know us–Part 2!

Last month we introduced you to some of the team waiting to welcome you here at Fitness Republic. This month we bring you the class teachers. They may not always be at the forefront but they are the unsung heroes who play a central role in what we do and what we can offer here. Samantha Pickering - Group Class instructor I recently started teaching spin while I am training to be a fitness instructor alongside my full-time job, I’m passionate about my fitness and helping others since my own weight loss journey, I like travelling and sightseeing while on holiday and have recently climbed Mount Toubkal for anaphylaxis campaign charity. My main drive is to help others, I hate to think anyone would feel the way I used to feel about myself. I want to give them that boost to make a change. Claire Stapley - Yoga Coach

Jacqui Massey - Group Class instructor

I have been practising yoga for over 20 years and I trained with the British Wheel of Yoga as a Hatha yoga teacher, however my experience is drawn from a variety of schools of yoga and different teachers I have met along the way. My classes focus on synchronising movement with breath, whilst developing strength, flexibility and balance and relaxation is woven into the class throughout. If you would like to start your day in a positive way and feel refreshed, restored and renewed, you will love the classes I teach.

I teach spin, kettle bells, boot camp, LBT and soon PIYO. Fitness is my part time job around my full time job in an office and I absolutely love it. When I’m not teaching I’m training (leg day is my favourite!), climbing or cooking. I’m also doing my Personal Trainer qualification right now and finding it really interesting - the human body is amazing.

Rose Smith – Fitness Coach, Nutritionist, Group Class instructor I’m Rose and I teach classes and have several Personal Training clients at Fitness Republic. I am a qualified Nutritionist and have worked with many clients to help with weight loss, muscle gain and sporting performance. In my free time I am a keen runner and in April this year I took part in a 106km ultra-marathon race. I also ride and event horses and have my own (ginger) horse called Sky who I accidentally bought about 2 years ago from a friend. 42

Claire Mccann Yoga Coach Hi, I’m Claire and I teach Flow Yoga at Fitness Republic. In my spare time, I enjoy going to Yoga events, as well as walking my dog and spending time with my family. Namaste!

Lauren Watts – Group Class Instructor

Meghann – Group Class Instructor

HI I’m Lauren, a fitness instructor and a level 3 qualified personal trainer. I have worked within the fitness industry for over 5 years now. I teach a variety of classes but my favourites are Metafit and Spin. I currently work as an estate agent for Frank Innes, having been in the position for over a year and teach here at Fitness Republic every Tuesday. Outside of work I enjoy training in the gym 4-5 times a week and up until recently I played football for Hilton Ladies, having played for a number of clubs over the past 14 years.

I have just passed my level 2 fitness instructor qualification and really enjoy my training and am looking forward to helping others. I work part time at Fitness Republic, and 4 days a week on a dairy farm milking jersey cows and looking after the calves. In my spare time I train my working gun dog Hugo and I also really enjoy clay pigeon shooting. Jack Jacques - Fitness Coach I started doing work experience at Fitness Republic while doing my Fitness instructor course, having qualified I often work on a Saturday morning, I like helping other people and being around the gym environment, in my spare time I referee football matches having previously played at a Semi Professional level for Nuneaton FC.

AMTG NEWS

We need Men!

It is a perennial problem for amateur theatre groups to attract enough men to meet the demands of most musical theatre scripts.

In our next show, “My Fair Lady”, there is a wealth of parts for men, including principal and supporting roles, and we are hoping for a flurry of interest for our New Members’ Audition on Tuesday 5th September – please contact us at enquiries@amtg. org.uk and we will send full details. The following message from James Longland, one of the newest members of the Men’s Ensemble, might help you to make a decision. “They are looking for men to be part of the show Oliver!” my 12 year old son said “and they are auditioning on Thursday in the Church.” So I can sing a bit (karaoke), I can do Dad dancing, what have I got to lose I wondered? I went along to the audition, and spent the next six months rehearsing and discovered one of the most exhilarating

0800 0016 922

things I have ever done! I met a group of people who have become friends; challenged myself; and did six performances in front of a packed theatre at Repton. I had a fantastic time with my son, and wondered why I hadn’t done this when I was younger. So now I’m ready for the next show with my new extended family. No matter what your talents, there is something for everyone to be involved in from backstage, to performing on-stage, to helping front of house, and it’s an experience not to be missed. Come and join us, and see what I am talking about. “ Contact enquiries@amtg.org.uk and also visit our website amtg.org.uk to find out more!

MONEY MATTERS

Research & Development – A valuable tax relief

are you missing out?

Many companies are still unaware of the valuable benefits of the Research and Development (R&D) tax relief. It is surprising how many businesses who are eligible for this tax relief, still do not make a claim. Based on our experience, the main reasons for companies not making a claim are: 1 Lack of awareness Some companies are still are not aware of this valuable tax relief, even though this has been around since 2000. 2 They do not believe they qualify Typically, companies consider their development work to be “just part of their routine duties” which of course is an understandable misconception. Many companies do not realise that they are in fact performing R&D as they may be improving an existing product or carrying out an activity that they have not done previously; they do not appreciate that the work involved in making those improvements could be considered to be R&D for tax purposes. If you are not currently claiming R&D tax relief please do get in touch with Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk to help identify the qualifying projects and the associated costs, preparation of a detailed report and then onward submission of the claim to HMRC. Our experienced team ensure that the time commitment required by client teams is minimised. How the R&D tax relief can save you cash The relief works by enhancing the amount of qualifying costs that the company incurs on relevant projects. Effectively, the additional relief reduces the taxable profits of the company and in turn the amount of Corporation Tax the company pays. Loss making companies can surrender some of these losses and in return obtain a payable tax credit. Our approach We have an excellent track record in making successful R&D tax relief claims for companies and have generated significant tax savings for our clients. We aim to make the process as seamless as possible so that the key information can be collated in an efficient and timely manner.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

The pivotal month in the British calendar August is a month where the normal rhythm of life is disturbed in a pretty big way; what’s more it’s always been the case. The reason is ultimately to do with food. August historically saw the ripening of grains making it a very intense period of manual labour to bring in the harvest. This would have involved a large proportion of the rural community, young and old. Schooling therefore was impractical during this period, making August the core month of a longer summer break from lessons. The closest most of us get to the harvest now is when we’re stuck behind slow farm traffic as we travel the countryside during our summer break. While the harvest still needs to be gathered, today it’s achieved with a fraction of the original workforce. Instead of August being synonymous with ‘labour’, for most of us it now represents ‘leisure’.

80

In spite of our modern disconnection from the harvest, let’s be mindful that our creator continues to keep the promise he made to Noah in Genesis that ‘Seed time and Harvest will not fail as long as the world endures’. It’s amazing how blessed we are with food and a great reason to be thankful to God. Why not join us for our Harvest Thanksgiving Service on 1st October at 10am? It’s a chance for us to be thankful to God but also give a little back through collecting food for the great work of the Ashby Food Bank. Put it in your diary!

IN YOUR GARDEN

Sleepy gardens Some plants have properties which have been associated with assisting sleep for centuries. If the hot nights are disturbing you then a little plant planning could be the answer. In Tudor times sleep potions became fashionable, rather like the herbal teas and scented candles of today. The beautiful Tudor property, Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, owned by the National Trust has this summer been featuring a part of the garden they call the ‘sleep bed’. In July and August this area of soporific plants have been flowering and looking very pretty, but it was set out for the purpose of showing the type of plants used for aiding sleep. Plants we know today such as Fennel, Camomile and Rose would be used in various infusions before bed time. Poppies and violets were grown not only for the flowers to look pretty but for the petals and seeds to be used in sleep remedies. In Tudor times a bed sprinkled with dry rose petles (an early form of potpourri) would be a welcome scent to mask unwashed bodies. Herbs such as Rosemary, Marjoram and Lavender would be burned to fumigate the room and ward off evil spirits. Lavender scent is well known for relaxation and has been proven to lower stress levels, heart rate

and blood pressure. Lavender is an outdoor plant but sprigs of Lavender brought into a room or a cushion of dried lavender in the bedroom is a useful way of using spent flowers. A young lavender plant could be placed in a window box for the first flowering season before moving it into the garden border. Another houseplant for bedrooms is Jasmine, which exudes a sweet scent from the pretty white flowers and it is a well known pant for essential oils in relaxation. The scent is said to reduce anxiety. The plant can be placed on a window sill and will do quite well if it is watered frequently in the flowering period but then topsoil should be allowed to dry out slightly when it is not in flower. Another plant for indoors is the Snake plant, also known as ‘Mother-in-Laws-Tongue’. It is said to remove harmful chemicals from the air which can come from products such as hairsprays. The Peace Lily is an indoor plant which is a good air cleaner too. It is also said to increase the humidity of a room and can aid breathing and help to combat dry skin and hair. The white flowers of this plant are beautiful and unique and it just needs watering once a week, so ideal if you are not that green fingered. Finally, Aloe Vera is a succulent plant and can look quite modern and contemporary in the home. The plant requires very little water and is extremely easy to look after. It produces oxygen at night and will improve the air quality in a room. For information about the sleep bed see www.nationaltrust.org.uk/little-moreton-hall Happy gardening!

BOOK REVIEWS

Lazy Days

Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion. Standard Deviation Katherine Heiny Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm, sociable and always ready to throw herself headlong into any situation. The total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth, in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly comes back into Graham’s life, he finds himself wondering how on earth he could have fallen in love with two such different women, and whether he’s ended up with the right one. If you like quirky characters, wry humour and reflections on the absurdities of everyday life, this book is for you. Palace of Curiosities Rosie Garland Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention. Reservoir 13 Jon McGregor A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village. Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in.

92

100% Real Sam Talbot If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge Lorna Landvik A warm, comfortable kind of story with great characters, first loves, old flames and family dynamics. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge follows a family over two decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a stand-alone novel. There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read. The Trouble with Goats and Sheep Joanna Cannon It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

August Museum News The feedback regarding the recently published Past and Present has been marvellously positive. Articles include John Louch’s reminiscences about his father’s and grandfather’s Commercial School for Ashby young ladies. Two articles – on Rev. Coleman and Rev. Bate, respectively schoolmaster and vicar at Ashby, give details of their careers in the town. John MacDonald’s article on the Briggs brothers of Coleorton and Australia, deals with yet another family tragedy of the Great War. Finally, an article from Christina Backman on two of her fascinating ancestors, John and Henry Smith. The next exhibition in the Loudoun Gallery, from August 2nd to September 22nd, will be Ashby Childhoods: some memories of growing up in Ashby and its surrounding villages, from the 1890s to the 1990s. This will be illustrated with material from our archives. Ashby Museum will also once again be participating at Tractor Jim’s excellent event on the Bath Grounds on Sunday 30th July. We hope to see you there. We would be so pleased to have new volunteers to

help on the front desk for two hours once a fortnight. If you think you can spare the time then do get in touch with us on 01530 560090 and you will be helping to keep this award-winning Museum in the forefront of town life. Friends of Ashby Museum On Wednesday 20th September at 2pm there will be a talk on the history of the Tollgate Microbrewery, with reference to the work relating to café Number 76 in Market Street. More details in the next issue.

BEAUTY TIPS

Summer Lovin’

Have you packed for your summer holiday yet? You might want to find room in your case for one of these beauty treats…

I have a confession. I am just a little bit addicted to travel sets. I love trying new products, and the miniature sizes make me feel like Alice in Wonderland. So it’s fair to say that when the Neal’s Yard Remedies new skincare sets arrived at my door I got rather excited. And I wasn’t disappointed when I tried them out. There are five sets available, including the Award Winning set, which includes Wild Rose Beauty Balm, White Tea Facial Mist, Beauty Sleep Concentrate and White Tea Facial Mask. Each treat is the perfect size for a few days away, and they all smell amazing. The facial mist is lovely and refreshing, and the balm is perfect for soothing chapped lips, travel weary feet and dry skin. Sets cost from £20, www.nealsyardremedies.com If you’re not lucky enough to be jetting off to the Caribbean for a two week spa break, you can at least treat yourself to an at-home spa experience. Janjira’s latest Therapy Massage Grapefruit and Tangerine candle smells amazing – think cocktails on a balmy summer’s evening in the tropics. It’s made with natural ingredients, such as coconut oil. As it melts you can use it as a massage oil, or just a body oil if you don’t have a willing masseuse to hand. Divine. £32, from www. janjira.co.uk When you’re used to an electric toothbrush, a manual one just doesn’t cut it for holidays. Enter

104

the Sonic Chic Urban Portable Toothbrush. It comes with its own cap to keep the brush clean, and is battery powered so there’s no need to pack a charger. There are several designs to choose between, from vintage kitsch to tribal patterns. The Sonic Chic Urban Portable Toothbrush is available from Boots for £19.99, which includes two heads and a battery. If you’re looking for a styling product to give your wavy hair a lift, try Philip Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray. Spray a light mist over damp hair, scrunch your hair slightly with a towel or curl up into a bun, and dry off with a hairdryer or leave to air dry. Easy. It gives curls and waves a bit more oomph and adds volume and bounce to fine, lifeless locks. Unlike others on the market, it doesn’t leave hair feeling ‘crunchy’, stiff or sticky. From £7.25, www.paulmitchell.co.uk I’m sure you’re well aware of the importance of wearing sun tan lotion. Unfortunately for us sensitive types, protecting against skin cancer can mean putting up with extra irritation. Odylique’s Natural Sun Screen SPF30 doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives, colours, fragrances or sun filters, so it’s less likely to irritate skin. At £25 for a full size tube it’s not cheap, but it’s got to be one of the best natural sunscreens available. It’s easy to massage in, doesn’t leave a white residue, and is packed with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and chamomile to leave skin feeling pampered.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PARENTING

Have Kids, Will Travel Travelling with children can be a stressful experience. It’s less about browsing duty free, and more about staying one step ahead of a possible meltdown. We can’t promise you there won’t be any tears (yours or theirs), but our travel tips will at least give you a better chance of avoiding a full-on screaming fit. Keeping them entertained Smart phones, travel DVD players, tablets… Digital technology can be great for keeping kids occupied while you’re travelling. They can also make children a bit ‘wired’ and cranky though, so you might want to consider limiting screen time and making sure your kids take regular breaks. Pack a small bag with age-appropriate activities. Younger children usually love sticker books. Older kids might enjoy puzzle books or card games. Most ages will join in with games of I Spy, though you may struggle to guess your toddler’s ‘green elephant in my head’ or ‘biscuit in my tummy’. Do feed the animals There is an unwritten rule of childhood – a child must declare themselves to be ‘reeeally hungry’ within half an hour of embarking on a long journey. Bonus points are awarded for announcing this after being ‘too full’ to finish breakfast. So, be prepared. Pack plenty of travel friendly snacks, such as fruit, oat bars and mini sandwiches, and keep them somewhere easy to access. A lunchbox is ideal. Keep a plastic bag handy for rubbish. When it comes to drinks, stick to water, or they’ll need the loo even more frequently. All about the comfort If something is bothering a child, they find it harder to block it out than an adult. So an itch, ache or cold feet can easily end up ruining a journey. Layers are key. Think hoodies with zips, slipper socks that can be pulled on easily, and a snuggly blanket. Go for cotton clothing, as it’s less likely to cause irritation. Fleecy onesies might be comfy, but they can make children overheat, so are best kept for

114

home. If you’re flying, try breast or bottle feeding your baby on take-off and landing to stop them getting earache. Older children can avoid ear pain by sucking a sweet. Stay one step ahead Spilled ketchup? No problem, you have a wet wipe. Too cold? Lucky you packed a jumper. Headache? Bring out the magical pink Calpol. Try to imagine everything that could go wrong, and work out how you can prepare for it. Because, in all likelihood, it will. Children have a habit of wandering off, so Which advise attaching a luggage tag to their clothing with your mobile phone number on it. You can also buy wrist tags that serve the same purpose. If you don’t have space for a pushchair, consider packing a sling. As well as stopping a toddler from running off, it gives them somewhere to sleep or rest while keeping your hands free. Allow extra time Everything seems to take longer when there are kids in tow. Teddies get lost, drinks get spilled and bladders get filled. Waiting around for a plane or train is never fun, but it beats running full pelt across an airport dragging a screaming child behind you. So it’s a good idea to allow plenty of extra time to get where you’re going. And relax…

PET’S CORNER

Food, health and hygiene for your Hamsters are very sensitive creatures, so when you bring home your new pet, it’s a good idea to leave them to settle in for a few days. They need to feel safe and secure, and not disturbing them too much will also help them become familiar with their new surroundings. Along with maintaining hygienic living conditions, diet plays an important part in your hamster’s dayto-day health, so what should you feed them? Best foods for your hamster Quality ready-mixed hamster food or pellets are available in good pet stores and supermarkets, and are a simple way to ensure your hamster receives the nutrients it needs. If you know the type of food they were given previously, it’s a good idea to carry on with the same regime to prevent upsetting their digestive system. Hamsters also enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables, but fruit should be given in tiny quantities as too much sugar can cause diabetes. A small piece of

carrot, apple, or cucumber once or twice a week will suffice. Health and hygiene Your hamster’s cage should be cleaned thoroughly once a week with a safe disinfectant - more often in the area used as a toilet if they don’t have a litter tray. Hamster litter trays are very useful, particularly for smaller cages, and help your pet to stay clean. If you put a little of the old, dry bedding back in the cage, they’ll also be surrounded by their own scent, feeling safer as a result. By Ann Haldon

CHESS PUZZLE

White to play and annd

maattee inn two mat tw w

How old is chess? That is a frequent question. It goes back at least 1400 years and is thought to have started in India or China.

8

From there it spread to Persia, and was then taken up by the Muslim world. Then it spread to Southern Europe. The fascination of chess is illustrated by this problem. It seems that Black has sufficient pieces to defend his king. However White keeps looking until the quick win pops up. That requires some determination by White. You can become a skilful player by joining our chess club. Meets Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ivanhoe Social Club Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
