WHAT A

sUMMER...

THERE have been so many events in Ashby this summer and each and every one has had a great turnout and immense local support whatever the weather.

The Street Party celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations on sunday 12th June was a huge success despite the pouring rain. Crowds gathered beneath their umbrellas and marquis to enjoy their picnics, the children loved the rides and the sun even made a brief appearance later in the day.

On sunday 24th July the Italian Street Market took place on Brook street with a wide range of delicious fresh Italian produce and some very popular Italian leather handbags which proved to be a big hit with the ladies. It was so well received that they hope to return again next year so if you missed it look out for the 2017 date.

Now a firm fixture in the Ashby social calendar, Jim’s Tractor Run and Family Fun Day returned for a seventh year on sunday 31st July. It was bigger and better than ever with over 100 tractors and vintage vehicles taking part in the parade. As well as enjoying the ever popular children’s rides, food and drink stalls and the fun dog show, new additions such as the circus skills area and Mini Beasts roadshow went down extremely well.

The leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, Councillor John Coxon expressed his thoughts “I am delighted that the people of the town really got behind Jim’s Tractor Run and Family Fun Day and turned out in their thousands to enjoy the spectacle on the Bath Grounds and the fantastic weather. The parade of around 100 tractors and vintage vehicles … created quite a spectacle for young and old alike, especially as they drove down Market Street.” The event was free to get in but donations were welcome to Hospice Hope which was Councillor Jim Hoult’s chosen beneficiary for the day and an amazing £1,287.63 was raised. Finally, in commemoration of the Battle of the Somme, a brief ‘Service to the Fallen’, conducted by Canon Andy smith from st. Helen’s Church, and organised by the Royal British Legion, Ashby Branch in conjunction with the Town Council took place in the War Memorial garden on Brook street on saturday 2nd July. This was followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial by the Town Mayor, Councillor Mike Ball, and the Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen MP.

AND FOR THE REST OF 2016? There’s lots more coming up. To make sure you don’t miss any of them here’s a reminder of the dates to put in your diary:

16th to 20th September Ashby Statutes 11th November Armistice Day 13th November Remembrance Day 3rd December Christmas Fair and Market 4th December Santa’s Fun Run

More details of each of these events can be found on the Town Council website and will be shared via Ashby Life. AND IN OTHER NEWS…

• The Town Council have acquired two defibrillators in conjunction with the three Rotary Clubs and are currently in the process of getting them installed in the town centre. We will confirm their locations once in place. • New multi-play equipment is now in place at The Croft for local children to enjoy. • Work is under way to improve the general area surrounding Giliwiskaw Brook and make it into more of a feature for the town. More details to follow.

DATES FOR TOWN COuNCIL MEETINGS are published on the Community Board of Ashby Life each month. The public are welcome to attend and there is always a slot for public questions. Find out more about your Town Council by visiting the offices at Legion House, south street, Ashby de la Zouch, calling 01530 416961 or via the website at www.ashbydelazouch.info

ashby’s FABulous SATuRDAY 1st October sees the return of the Ashby’s FABulous event. Once again stores within the town centre will unite to show just how fabulous Ashby can be. The fun will include live models in the shop windows and movie themed fancy dress for businesses without store fronts such as banks and estate agents.

The event was created and brought to life in previous years by local resident Lorna Titley who is un-fortunately no longer with us. However this year’s event hopes to celebrate her memory with posters adopting the strapline… Ashby’s FABulous – this one’s for you Lorna.

Whether you are a local business owner or resident you can show your support. The team are looking for volunteers to pose as models, hair and makeup experts to help prep the models and of course local shops to offer up their windows. You can contact the Ashby’s FABulous team via Facebook.

Put 1st October in your diary now and head into town on the day to show your support and see the town really come to life!

and their Gardens

ON a short break to Devon I visited a National Trust property called Greenway which was the holiday home of the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. One stunning feature is the view down to the Dart Estuary from the garden and also its woodland pathways that leads down to a boathouse. It was this very home and garden which inspired the setting for her novel ‘Dead Man’s Folly’. The TV adaptation fittingly used the location of Greenway and its boathouse. All this got me thinking that instead of trying to inspire you to enjoy your gardens and potentially get gardening or make some alterations, I would just tell you it h have h d about a few other famous writers who used their gardens for inspiration and actually used their gardens as a place for their writing.

Legendary children’s author Roald Dahl had a brick built shed in his Buckinghamshire garden where he wrote his stories. He had said the shed in his garden gave him space to think. Dahl’s shed was accessed by a pathway with a pergola over which grew climbing Roses and Clematis. He loved his garden, particularly the fruit trees which are said to have directly inspired his book ‘James and the Giant Peach’. Another famous person who was inspired by a fruit tree in his garden was of course Sir Isaac Newton who observed an apple falling from a tree and this no less than inspired his theory of gravity.

Another well-known children’s author, Beatrix Potter loved her Lake District garden at Hill Top Farm. The

perennial flowers of her country cottage style garden, along with the vegetables and winding paths, feature regularly in her books and inspired the beautiful illustrations too.

Present day writers embrace the solace and calm of a garden shed/office too. Philip Pullman, for example, wrote the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy in his garden shed which has been described as grubby and cobweb-filled. But that does not matter of course, it is the calming influences of a garden and a ritual journey to a private retreat which is so important for strict concentration and interruption free space. Indeed Roald Dahl used to tell his children and then grandchildren that there were wolves in the part of the garden near his writing shed to ensure his strict writing hours were not disturbed! Famous playwright George Bernard Shaw did his writing in a shed-like structure which he used as his office set up with his typewriter. His shed/office was cleverly placed on a large turntable so he could move it around in the day to capture the sun. But it is not just the eccentric English writers, but the Americans too who love their little garden hideaways: Arthur Miller wrote his famous play ‘Death of a Salesman’ in a shed.

It is not just writers who have been directly inspired by their gardens of course, the famous William Morris designs of the Arts and Crafts Movement drew inspiration from Medieval and Tudor style gardens, and the roses and honeysuckle he planted in his garden at ‘Red House’ were studied to influence his famous wallpapers and textile designs. songwriter Roger Walter of pop group 'Pink Floyd’ turned his garden shed into a recording studio to produce the album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’. Iconic British artist and sculptress Barbara Hepworth had a shed in her famous Cornish sculpture garden where she found it essential to have ‘power naps’.

Happy gardening.

Francesca

beauty tips Acne is by far the most common skin complaint amongst those in the 12 to 17 age bracket, ranked as a top personal concern. studies have even attempted to link teen acne to depression. With the new school term underway let’s try and banish the breakouts!

So what is a spot? Is it dirty skin? A reaction to cosmetics? A disease? Well in a way, it’s all of that and much more.

For teenagers, acne is caused primarily by hormones. At the onset of puberty an unfortunate side effect is the surge in sebum or oil production, this mixed with dead skin cells, make-up and other build ups lead to clogged pores, the perfect breeding ground for bacteria that cause acne. Whether it’s scrubbing away all oils with harsh products, using tanning in the sun to ‘clear’ acne, picking at their skin, and a host of other skin sins the world of teenage acne is a minefield of information and myth.

Top Tips for Teens with Acne...

Clean your mobile phone daily with an antibacterial wipe. Just think where your phone has been, chances are that will be on your face... gross!

Swap your pillow around so you aren’t sleeping in last nights grime! Pin long hair back to keep it off the face.

Avoid touching your skin, as hands that seem clean can still harbour dirt.

Avoid fragrances & colours in products. Key ingredients to avoid include lanolin, mineral oil and sd alcohols. These can be found in some makeup. so make sure it’s removed correctly! Don’t over scrub! They seem like they are working in the short term but often strip and irritate the skin

With children as young as 7 now talking about skin as a concern it’s imperative that young teens start proper daily skin care routines, introducing cleansing, hydrating and treating as part of their regimen.

in your home Eddie, the in-house interior designer from The Flooring and Bed Company has joined our editorial team to provide you lucky readers with some interior design tips. Below you’ll find his first article with words of wisdom on the key steps to designing your perfect room…

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

HAVE you ever wondered why a professionally designed room always look beautiful, cohesive and more spacious than it actually is? Here are some tips I would like to share with you on how these pros achieve the results by following some of the fundamental rules in interior design.

Have you ever tried to declutter a room and then realised how much nicer and bigger the room actually is? This is my first tip for creating a spacious room: Declutter is the key to discovering the actual space you have got to work with and it is like having a blank canvas for you to create a beautifully designed room. Once the room is clear, take dimensions of the room, starting with a floor plan, and wall measurements. This will help you in selecting the right size furniture to fit in the room. Spacial planning is crucial when selecting furniture pieces to ensure good ‘traffic flow’ and to create a sense of spaciousness in the room. For rooms with a low ceiling, try to keep the room low-slung and use tall mirrors to enhance the space.

Mood boards are a useful tool for any interior project as it helps us in visualising how the end result of an interior makeover will look, and can be used as a ‘shopping list’ for all the materials and accessories. Once you have a shopping list, it is time to set a budget and use the shopping list to prioritise what are the key features or items that must not be compromised on.

Next, we can focus on choosing a colour scheme to inject life into the room. When choosing a colour palette, try and stick to 3 to 5 colours. You can start with some of your favourite colours as they reflect your personality. Once you have decided on the main hue, other complimentary colours can be added to create a colour scheme. If you struggle to pick them , you can always pick up some paint charts as there are normally some images which you can use for inspiration. Pinterest and home furnishing magazines will also give you great examples of some of the trending colour schemes.

ashby 20...

More than just a race

EVERY spring the streets of Ashby are ignited with an influx of up to 1,500 excited runners who line up to complete a two lap run course which circuits around the local villages of Packington, swepstone, Heather, Normington Le Heath finishing on Ashby bath grounds. The event which is ideally placed for pre-spring marathon distance runners and in 2014 was voted March’s best race, now attracts casual and competitive runners alike from all across the country. Ashby 20 was born in 1989 by Ivanhoe Runners club members Kevin sanders, Bob White, Paul Enion and Peter Brown who were confident Ivanhoe could bring a competitive run event to Ashby. The course used to go

48

up pistern hill but luckily for the runners a new route was devised in 2002. But what's so special about Ashby 20 and why is this much more than just a run race? Ashby 20 is very much a community event. Over the past 5 years approximately ÂŁ10,000 has been raised for local charities and organisations. The event has close links with Aldi who are the main sponsor. It also brings money to local business including shops, restaurants and hotels. However, it does rely greatly on the support of Ivanhoe Runners, Town Council, NWLDC leisure services, Rotary Club of Ashby Castle, Ashby Endurance Explorer Scouts, Leicestershire Search and Rescue, Conkers Park Run and many more. something the club is very grateful for.

Ivanhoe Runners are extremely proud of Ashby 20 but we are also extremely dedicated to improving the event year on year. We are working with the local community and villages to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. This year we are trying to organise a litter pick around the local villages prior to, in addition to, following the event. We are also exploring a children's run on the bath ground to encourage children to participate, have fun and get a sense of achievement.

If you would any further information about the event please go to the Ashby 20 website at www.ashby20.co.uk

INFLuENCES CHILDREN are really quick to pick up things. We’ve all heard children repeating what they’ve heard others say. Parents can spell out words like b-i-s-c-u-i-t but once your child can spell, no conversation goes unheard! They pick up things like sponges; learning an instrument, a second language, how to play a sport. sadly however, there are also many things that can influence them negatively.

When bringing up children who are learning so rapidly, you can sometimes think: Are they getting enough depth to their lives? Is a good education enough? What about a happy family environment? Perhaps a good circle of friends? But sometimes there needs to be more. some might call it a moral compass or an appreciation of religion and its role in society. There are times in your life when having a faith, or belief in a higher being, is all you have to get you through the tough times. It can be an incredible support when you believe that someone is watching over you.

60

Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby

www.ashbychurch.co.uk

For centuries, children have been taught the basics of a belief, be it Christianity or another religion, but as each generation comes along, the fundamentals of love, respect, morality, honesty, kindness and patience are being passed-on less and less. These are the roots that give us as people, and as a society, stability.

sunday school and Youth Club can be a really positive influence for children. It’s a safe place to make friends, have fun and learn about God and the morals for daily life. It may also help balance out some of the negative influences society unfortunately provides.

Why not come along to Youth Club on the first and third Friday of the month at 6.30pm or to our Sunday School each Sunday at 10am? Over thirty children of all ages already do and they simply wouldn’t change it for world. Useful passages to look up: Proverbs ch22 v6

IS YOuR WEIGHT

with Fitness Republic Trainer Simon Pellecchia

www.fitnessrepublic.co.uk

WEIGHING YOU DOWN? IS your weight getting you down? Are you sick and tired of feeling sluggish and tired? In desperate need to get fit but the thought of entering the gym would be the most daunting and scary thing you could ever possibly imagine doing? I speak to various people on a daily basis who believe that unless you are a size 8 or 10 then the gym isn't for you. You feel people will stare and judge you. This makes me extremely sad as it couldn't be further from the truth!

Here at Fitness Republic, we not only specialise in body transformations but we also offer continuous support and advice to every single client regardless of their age, sex or weight. I can confidently say that 100% of Fitness Republic members see an overweight person join the gym and they are glad they are there, as that was probably them just 3, 6 or even 12 months ago, and they know that taking the

SAM PICKERING... Having never really enjoyed sports whilst growing up coupled with slowly gaining weight up to just over 20 stone by the time I was 21, the thought of entering a gym wasn't just daunting, it was completely out of question. It was totally out of the question. I'd been to one before and had an awful experience, the staff weren't very eager to help, I had no idea what I was doing and just felt self-conscious stood next to all the beautifully toned bodies. since joining Fitness Republic I've received constant support from all the team, I've felt surprisingly comfortable and happy in the gym from day one. I am now 2 years down the line and have developed a real passion for fitness along with building my self-confidence. It's a pleasure to train in a real gym with real people. We all work together and support each other in reaching our goals and setting new ones. My advice to anyone who wants to join the gym but has some worries is; just go for it, have a chat with the staff or even the people that train there and you will get a great insight into the amazing community Fitness Republic have built.

A client came to see me a few weeks ago, she is a size 16 to 18 and was desperate to speed up her weight loss by exercising but she just didn't have the confidence. We spent some time chatting, I told her to never avoid something just because it is out of her comfort zone, in a few months’ time she will look back and think about how glad she is that she now works out! As the famous saying goes ‘You are writing your own story so don't let anyone else hold the pen’. Never let the opinions of others affect you! I convinced her to come and try one of our free 7day passes and guess what... Yes, you guessed it, she has never looked back since. CLAIRE BEAuMONT... I have wanted to lose weight and improve my overall fitness for a couple of years. I tried various classes but have always felt very self-conscious the thought of going into a gym was very daunting, I had visions of mega toned women and big muscle men, and there's wobbly unfit me joining them. When I finally took the plunge and joined Fitness Republic I was so relieved that it was nothing like I had imagined. Everyone is so friendly, no one stared and nobody cares what you look like or what your fitness level is, everyone is on their own journey. It has been amazing; I've been so encouraged and haven't laughed so much in ages. I actually look forward it.

70

time to physically care for yourself is not easy.

However, don't just take my word for it, I have included the testimonials from just 3 of our amazing clients who after joining soon realised that it was totally different to what they imagined it would be like.

If can relate to any of this article, then please pop in for a chat or call 01530 413330 so we can help restore your confidence and build a stronger, happier, fitter you.

ZOE Z BEST... I have struggled with my weight and fitness levels l for over 15 years. I have been on multiple diets in the past, p and have tried the odd exercise classes but nothing has e ever worked long term. I struggle to stay motivated and tend tto eat convenience foods. Recently I decided I needed to c change and stick to a healthier lifestyle. I looked into joining tthe gym but was put off by the thought that it would be full of o super fit and beautiful people, I only needed one negative thought t to put me off, so again I decided against it. Recently I spoke to a friend I have known for many years who is now a Trainer at Fitness Republic and she reassured me that Fitness F Republic wasn't full of any size 0 gym bunnies, so I decided d to give it a try along with a friend. After the first time that t we went I knew this was something I could do. The staff and a people there were so friendly and nobody looked at me as a if I didn't belong. It has motivated me to get fit and start eating e healthier. I now hope to achieve a good weight loss by Christmas C so that I can attend the party happier and fitter.

ashby museum news

shby Museum is delighted to have won another Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage award, this time for ‘Behind the Scenes’- a project in Archives or Collections. Our recently established archives group of 23 volunteers have been improving the way we catalogue, conserve and store our documents and artefacts. We were complimented on the professionalism of our work by Jonathan Platt, the head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, East Midlands, who presented the award plaque to Michael Hardy and Ken Hillier at an evening ceremony in the Museum studies Department, University of Leicester. We were pleased to award certificates and prize money to children from local schools who deserved recognition in our annual Ian Clews Writing Competition.

They wrote some exciting stories about the Edwardian lady parachutist, Dolly shepherd and were invited to the Museum to meet the Chairman of the Trustees and collect their winnings. The Museum has provided an Education Box for the Friends of the Bath Grounds project. The box includes folders on Dolly shepherd, events held on the Bath Grounds in the 19th century and today and also on the Ivanhoe spa Baths. Inside each folder are photographs, pictures, work sheets and information on each of the topics. The box is complemented by Edwardian costumes for a boy and a girl. It is available for hire from the Museum for £5 a week to schools and other educational establishments. Please call us if you would like to borrow the box on 01530 560 090. Due to ill health we have lost some of our volunteer custodians. If you have two hours once a fortnight to spare, please consider joining our friendly team. Do get in touch if you can offer some time.

storytime THE presence of a muddy bike abandoned on the grass verge made Marion suspect that the creature perched high in the branches of her damson tree was no bird. “You’d better not be scrumping,” Marion said, wrapping her pashmina tightly around her shoulders, “I’ll be having a word with your mother.” “You don’t know her.” A girl, no older than twelve, peered down through the foliage. she’d come prepared. A large bucket swung from her juice-stained hand. “You’re trespassing,” Marion said with annoyance. “That tree borders my property. All the fruit belongs to me.” “You can’t own a tree,” the girl said, “it’s a living thing.” “What utter nonsense,” Marion said crossly. “Of course you can.” The girl looked dubious. “Last year all the plums just fell into the lane and got ruined,” the girl said. “That’s a waste, and we’re taught not to waste food.” Marion felt a twinge of guilt. Last year she had intended to pick the damsons, but it meant getting the step ladder out of

There was a steely look in the girl’s eye. Then she smiled. “How about we play a game?” she said. “I tip this bucket and whatever you catch you keep, and whatever falls on the ground I keep.” “But I’ve got nothing to catch them in,” Marion said, annoyed. she didn’t much like games. “Then nip into your house for a bowl.” The girl smiled sweetly. “As big as you like.” “I don’t trust you,” Marion said, “the minute I’m gone you’ll be off with the lot.” The girl looked offended. “Brownie’s honour I would not,” she said. “Alright then, why not catch them in your scarf?” “It’s not a scarf, it’s a pashmina,” Marion said, then realised what a good idea that was. The girl clearly wasn’t aware just how big her pashmina was. If she held it taut she could catch every damson, and the annoying child would end up with none at all. “Alright then,” Marion agreed, “you’ve got yourself a deal.” she

the garage and she’d never got round to it. “They’re not plums,” she said firmly, “they’re damsons.” “They taste like plums,” the girl replied tartly. “So you’ve been eating them as well?” Marion asked. “Just the one,” the girl grinned. “It was juicy.” “Why don’t you climb down with your bucket?” Marion said cunningly, “And I will take my share from what you’ve picked. The rest you can keep as a picker’s fee.” The girl considered this for a moment. “How about,” she replied, “I take my share from the bucket and you get what’s left instead?” “Certainly not,” said Marion. This child really had some cheek. “Don’t forget those are my damsons and you are a thief.” “If you cared about them you’d have picked them already,” the girl said. “I’m the one who’s taken all the risks.” “But you didn’t ask permission,” Marion said, outraged.

unfolded the length of fabric. “Not fair!” the girl cried. “It’s massive.” “You can’t back out now,” Marion said, pleased that the balance of power had been redressed. “Alright,” the girl conceded reluctantly, “get ready then.” Marion squinted up into the branches of the tree with the pashmina outstretched like a fireman’s net. The girl wedged herself against a branch and held up the bucket. slowly it began to tip. Marion braced herself. Frist there was a strange rattling sound, then a slurry of wet damson stones rained down upon her. “You know how I said I’d only eaten one?” the girl laughed, swinging nimbly down with her empty bucket. “Well, I might have been lying.”

venture theatre news OuR new season at The Venture Theatre is getting off to a cracking start with ‘On Golden Pond’ by Ernest Thompson.

Many of you will remember the film that starred Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda. As is often the case, the filmmakers did deviate quite a lot from the original play, but you probably remember it as the touching story of an elderly couple coming to terms with their own mortality in their favourite summer

place, their lakeside house on Golden Pond. The play has all the poignancy of the film but if anything it is more moving and certainly – a lot more funny! This is one of those plays that will send you away with a lovely soft warm feeling inside. The cast includes some of your favourite Venture Theatre actors: Nigel Freer plays the curmudgeonly Norman and Fran Williams his long suffering wife, Ethel. Nicola stephens is the estranged daughter Chelsea and Tim Lumb her new boyfriend Bill. Dave steward plays mailman and Chelsea’s ex-boyfriend Charlie and newcomer to the Venture Theatre, Kit Lumb, plays Bill junior. The play is directed by Di Crane who told us: “When I read the play, I was struck by how beautifully crafted it is. The charac-

ters are complete, real people to whom, I think, most of us can relate. I remembered the film very well but the play has, for me, a more intimate feel. Norman reminds me of my Dad, oh so clever, but oh so crabby, with a dry wicked sense of humour. The soft centre is there … but just don't argue with him!” Our Christmas play will be “Comfort and Joy” an hilarious comedy by Mike Harding. Readings for the play will be held at the theatre on Monday evenings in September (5th 12th and 19th) at 8pm. If you fancy trying for a part do come down. Our wardrobe department is now open again for costume hire. If you would like to enquire about hiring a costume, please contact Karen Heath on 01283 222575.

MEN OF COAL

EDMuND Birchall, author of a new book entitled ‘Men of Coal’ has local ties with his daughter and her family living in Smisby. In fact, the coalmining industry played a large part in the development of our towns during the Industrial Revolution with collieries at swannington, snibston, Whitwick and more as well as the creation of the Leicester and swannington Railway. Even today, reminders of its presence can be seen in the disused colliery at snibston or the horse gin at Hough Mill and in the town names; Coalville and Coleorton. The last mine in the UK closed in 2015 but many local families will have relations who worked down the mines or have previous generations of coal miners in their family.

Edmund Birchall comes from a long line of coal miners, having traced his family tree back to 1786 to discover that he is a seventh generation miner. On leaving school at 15, Edmund (Eddy) Birchall, like many young lads in the 1950s, went straight down the mines. This semi-autobiographical novel is based upon Eddy’s experiences working in mines in the Lancashire coal area in the 1950s. This is the story of brave and courageous men who mined the coal in a workplace that was dark and dangerous. However, their sense of humour and strong camaraderie was always present. The novel is set when coal

92

was still being produced by hand filling but as mechanisation was slowly creeping in. The book describes Redman’s Colliery’s Management and its dedicated miners. The pit’s daily routine is soon turned upside down by a political visit from the leaders of the Tory Government.

The book is available now online at Amazon, priced £6.83 for a Kindle Edition, £9.00 in Paperback and £14.00 in Hardcover. £

money matters

What you need to know...

The impact of your credit score WHEN you apply for credit or other types of borrowing, the lender will check your credit score to see if you are a good or bad risk. Your credit rating also comes into play in other situations, and has the potential to affect every aspect of your life. A low score means that you may have to pay an increased rate of interest to counteract the risk to a lender. This has massive implications if you’re trying to obtain a mortgage, as a poor credit rating can mean less product choice and higher monthly repayments. HOW IS A CREDIT SCORE FORMuLATED?

A number between zero and 999 is used as a guide to lenders and other interested parties, such as landlords and utility companies, about your ability to repay. scores between 721 and 999 are generally considered a lower risk, but there are other factors that influence your overall rating: • • • •

Your previous history of repayment. How much credit is available to you. The level of debt. Whether any County Court Judgements have been made against you for non-payment, or if you have been made bankrupt in the past. • If you are on the electoral roll. • How many times you have applied for credit. SO HOW COuLD A LOW CREDIT SCORE IMPACT ON YOuR LIFE?

Difficulty in getting a mortgage Even if you find a lender willing to offer you a mortgage, the interest rate will probably be much higher, and you won’t have access to the better deals. Having a low credit score is often an indication that you can’t afford a mortgage, but unfortunately it can also affect your ability to rent. Problems renting A landlord will check your credit score - if they see that payments have been missed or that you are not on the electoral role, they could view you as untrustworthy and an unnecessary risk.

Personal loans and other finance Obtaining car finance will be difficult if your credit score is low, as this is the main factor on which a lender bases their decision. It’s not only the large purchases that can be stifled, however – you may also encounter problems when trying to increase your bank overdraft or when requesting a higher limit on your credit card.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOuR CREDIT SCORE OVER TIME If your credit rating is low, or you feel that it could be better, there are

94

specific actions you can take to improve it over the long-term:

• Make sure you’re on the electoral register, as a permanent address increases confidence that you’re trustworthy.

• Pay at least the monthly minimum on your credit cards.

• Cancel any unused credit cards appearing on your credit report - too much available credit adds to your risk from the lender’s viewpoint.

• Check for mistakes on your credit report, with all three agencies – you can request that they amend your report, and add a comment against the entry to explain that it is incorrect. • If a spouse or partner has a poor credit score, you can apply for a financial disassociation.

A good credit score can make your life more straightforward, so it’s worthwhile reviewing your credit report every so often to make sure that all the details are correct, and also to check for any suspicious activity. It’s possible to obtain a copy from any of the credit reference agencies for a few pounds. http://uk.businessinsider.com/how-your-creditscore-can-impact-your-life-2016-5?r=US&IR=T https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/moneymatters/guide-to-credit-scores.shtml

on the beat Hello everyone...

THE Purple Flag Accreditation Scheme was launched in October 2009 by the Association of Town Centre Management in association with partners in central and local government, the professions, police, business and industry.

Just as the Blue Flag is an indicator of a good beach, Purple Flag is the indicator of where to go for a good night out.

Purple Flag is positive, forwardlooking and practical. At it’s heart is a partnership nationholder ally and locally with stakeholder groups. It seeks to engage them in a joint endeavour to: • raise aspirations • increase standards • broaden the appeal

100

Ashby de la Zouch has a variety of restaurants, bars, traditional pubs, a theatre, nightclubs, and churches which host a variety of entertainment events. We feel that this should be celebrated and a way of doing this is to apply for Purple Flag Accreditation for the town.

As part of the process, we are required to undertake a perception survey and therefore we would like to gather as many responses as possible. I would appreciate it if you could take a few moments to complete the survey which can be found at https://www.atcm.org/ programmes/purple_flag/ WelcometoPurpleF lag

If you have questions regarding the scheme or to find out how you become a part of the accreditation process, please contact catherine.ridgway@ nwleicestershire.gov.uk or telephone 01530 454740.

ashby concert band ASHBY Concert Band is very excited to be celebrating its 20th birthday this year; the band has grown substantially since it started and now has over 50 members who are performing at a wide range of celebratory concerts in 2016.

20 years of live music in the community

They started the year with 'Music from the Movies' at Ibstock Palace in May then at the beginning of June set off on tour to the beautiful North Yorkshire coast. The band has undertaken several overseas tours in the

104

past but for this special birthday year they decided to stay in the UK so that as many of the band members and their families as possible could join the tour and 90 of them descended on the small fishing port of Whitby where they performed a special evening concert in the sp spectacular st Hilda’s church and raised £579 for the R RNLI. Af After a day exploring Whitby they headed back home via scarborough where they were lucky to have a sunny s afternoon for their afternoon band stand concert in af P Peasholme Park. Back home, the summer season fi finished with a concert in their usual base in Ashby to he fundraise for Ashby Rotary's charity of the year, the help A Ambulance. Air Following a short summer break rehearsals are now under way for the official anniversary concert which will take place on Saturday 8th October in Holy Trinity church in Ashby. The music for the concerts this year has been chosen by the band members, with a vote to find their favourite pieces and there is such a wide variety of pieces in their repertoire that they have been able to fill an entire year of concerts with all of the choices agreed so that audiences could join them for every concert and hear something different at each one. Tickets for the anniversary concert will soon be available at Ashby TIC, early booking is advised.

it’s local NORTH West Leicestershire has a history of being a culturally vibrant area. Matthew Pegg of Mantle Arts, Coalville has written an audio drama to bring local history to life. Teaming up with Ashby Museum director Julian Hanby, producer Martin Berry and a cast of local actors the group have created an exciting and informative dramatisation of real events, diary entries and letters from the 1800’s.

THE WINTER GARDEN...

Wordsworth and Coleridge in Coleorton

In 1806 the romantic poet William Wordsworth who penned the famous lines, ‘When all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils’, moved to Hall Farm, Coleorton. The move came soon after the tragic death of his younger brother John in a shipwreck, an event that shook William and his sister Dorothy. Wordsworth’s family was growing and they had been increasingly cramped in the tiny Dove Cottage in Grasmere. Their friends Lord and Lady Beaumont invited them to stay at Hall Farm to give them space for their family and for Wordsworth to create more poetry. Wordsworth agreed to design a ‘Winter Garden’ for Lady Beaumont which still exists in the grounds of Coleorton Hall in North West Leicestershire. samuel Taylor Coleridge came to stay with the

112

Wordsworth family over Christmas that year but while the family tried to help him, he slid further into opium addiction and alcoholism. The audio drama is based on these events. Over a period of seven weeks the cast rehearsed and refined the play culminating in a live reading to a full audience at the Venture Theatre in Ashby on Friday 8th July. This reading allowed the director to refine the drama using the audience reactions as a guide. The play was professionally recorded at Aspect Studio in Loughborough over two weekends and is currently in production. The complete play will be available from Ashby Museum as an audio CD or available for download from the internet in late October.

all about you

NATIONAL FRIENDSHIP MONTH WHERE would we be without friends? It’s said that friends make the good times better, and the bad times bearable. This month, it’s time to celebrate our friendships, as September is National Friendship Month.

In the UK, the month is attributed to The Oddfellows, one of the largest and oldest friendly societies. For them, it’s ‘an annual campaign to bring communities together and highlight the importance of friendships.’

Research from the University of North Carolina shows that spending time with friends can make us happier and healthier.

Whilst many feel it’s preferable to be with those who are positive, supportive and share good news, some believe that having close friends who they can have a good moan to and get things off their chest with is also beneficial. Groups tend to find their own norms over time in terms of what they talk about, what activities they do and how they behave. You may have heard the expressions ‘Friends are the family you choose’, or ‘You can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends’ and it’s true that some have tighter bonds with friends than family members.

Many say that there is something particularly special about a woman’s friendship with other women and in 2009 the Kappa Delta Sorority decided to make september International Women’s Friendship month, so

114

perhaps for females there are two reasons to celebrate.

But, with sociologist Gerald Mollenhorst reporting in 2012 that most of us replace half of our friends every seven years, it’s good to keep an eye out for new friends as well as celebrate long standing relationships. For some, connections will last decades but others will be for just a certain stage of a person’s life. some talk about outgrowing their friends or moving away from damaging peer groups for example and couples divorcing can often cause a split in friendship groups.

Oddfellows are helping people to build new friendships during september, by organising a range of special activities to complement their annual programme. These include walks, tea dances and craft workshops with the theme of bringing people of all ages together over a simple cuppa. You can find details at: https:// www.oddfellows.co.uk/Events/FriendshipMonth.

Or you could mark the month in your own special way. Plan a coffee morning, buy your friends a gift or just take time to tell them how much they mean to you. You could also reconnect with long lost pals. social media has enabled a whole new way of keeping in touch with those who are remote and you could also try having face to face style conversations with free calling services such as Skype or Apple’s FaceTime.

book reviews

Historical Fiction

Whether you’re tim time traveling back to the middle ages, or just sixties, historical revisiting the sixtie way to escape fiction is a great wa the present for a few hours.

The T Th he Muse he Mus u e Jessie Burton us Bururuto tn Burton’s The Miniaturist was one of 2014’s bestsellers, and personally I think her latest novel is even better. West Indian-born Odelle lands a job at a London art institute in 1967. Her friend, Lawrie, has a painting he thinks the institute might be interested in, but Odelle’s boss seems to know more about the picture than she’s willing to admit. Back in 1936, Olive is attempting to hide her artistic talents from her father, while building a life for herself in Spain. A brilliant portrayal of forging o one’s identity in a foreign country.

The Harrowing James Aitcheson T Th It’s 1066 and a Norman army is marching through England, destroying anyone and anything in their path. Five travellers are fleeing to the last Saxon stronghold, but will they reach it in time, and is it just the Normans they’re running from? There’s action scenes aplenty, interspersed with the individual stories of the five travellers – a servant, a lady, a priest, a warrior and a minstrel. Aitcheson has clearly done his homework on this era, and also manages to create characters that are every bit as human and flawed as their modern-day counterparts.

Let Me Tell You About A Man I Knew Susan Fletcher Fl Jeanne Trabuc is a dutiful wife and mother, but her sons have left home and the boredom and loneliness of life in rural Provence in the 1880s are settling over her in a quiet depression. So when a new patient arrives at the asylum that her husband runs, Jeanne can’t resist reaching out to him. An artist, with wild red hair, self-mutilated ear and attitude so different to anyone she knows, he has the power to reawaken the spark within Jeanne that she’s subdued for so long. A beautiful, fictional reimagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole institution.

The Plague Charmer Karen Maitland It’s 1361 and plague is once more stealing through England. In its wake is an even d deadlier curse – fear. As neighbours turn against each other and hysteria sweeps the nation, can Sara protect her family? Up in the manor house, 16 year old d Ch Christina i and her secret baby are hiding from the world, waiting to see whether her abusive husband will come home from France and claim the child. With a long cast of characters, and plenty of plot twists and turns, The Plague Charmer could well stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Stolen Years Kazia Myers No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection. tio
