SPOTLIGHT ON...

The Marlene Reid Centre Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group. In this issue we turn our attention to The Marlene Reid Centre (MRC) in Coalville which offers an amazing amount of support to so many members of the community. Below we show just a sample of their many services – how could they help you? The MRC Food Bank is open to all local individuals. They give emergency food parcels to those in need based solely on the generosity and donations of local people and companies. If you can spare a few tins with your weekly shop please donate to the reception at The MRC to help someone in need. Community Transport Services include a volunteer driver social car scheme enabling local people over 60 to get to much needed health related appointments, mini bus hire to the public and regular bus trips to supermarkets and local landmarks running all year round with door to door pick up.

The Soft Play area and café servin ng food, drinkks and snackss is open three e days per weekk for ch hildren und der 5 years off age. It’s a great way for parents (and grandparents) to socialise with others in the community and a safe environment for your little ones. Open Mon, Thurs, Fri 10am – 3pm. The REACT Furniture Project sells low priced furniture to the public and is open 6 days a week. This scheme helps the unemployed gain vital development to get back into a working environment. The main entrance is from Coalville Precinct Car Park (bottom corner off Needhams Walk). Open Mon - Fri 9am - 3.30pm & Sat 9am – 1pm, excluding Thursdays. The Attic is the MRC charity shop situated on Belvoir Road in Coalville which sells good quality donated items of clothing, books, bric-a-brac and toys at low prices. All funds raised are used to continue the community projects at the centre. You can find out more about all of the above services and more by visiting www.mrc.uk.net or by calling into the centre at 85 Belvoir Road, Coalville. LE67 3PH (01530 510515). ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE Let’s imagine our newest bell-ringer. Let’s call him Bob. He’s happy to come along every Wednesday evening to practice - not only is campanology an enjoyable activity, but it is good physical exercise. Bob knows raising your arms above your head for an hour is particularly good for the upper body. He also knows it’s great stimulation for the brain. Unlike conventional music, written down with notes and chords, for bell peals a numerical ‘method’ is used. These methods are memorised by the bell ringers and rely on everyone recognising the position of all the bells around them, recalling the pattern from memory. Bob enjoys the skill of varying his own bell speed to fit in with the team. Bob particularly enjoys bell-ringing at St Helen’s. Most bell towers contain six or eight bells, but St Helen’s has 10. Once a month an enthusiastic band of campanologist come from far and wide for a ten-bell practice. Bob also loves to be part of the peel of bells which rings out on sunny summer Saturdays, letting everyone across the town know the joy of a church wedding. He even gets paid! You might think you’d like to see this quirky pastime for yourself. But no, I’m afraid not - at St Helen’s you

won’t even catch a glimpse of Bob and his mates and their hidden world, because each Sunday morning they’re ensconced behind a closed door in the bell-tower. But wait! One of the exciting ‘Vis-Box’ tours of St Helen’s Church, which are virtual guided tours via an app on your phone, includes some fantastic film footage of the bell-ringers, giving you a sneaky peak behind the belltower door. Not only that but also St Helen’s Heritage Project is hosting a bell-ringing event at 7pm on 15th August. Watch and listen to our ten bells being rung, view the stunning calligraphy of the peal book, see the magnificent handbells and even have a go at ringing a church bell yourself. So…be like Bob!

ASHBY INSIDE OUT

The team at Ashby Toolbox have been working hard for several months now to organise a brand new event called ‘Ashby Inside Out’. It all started with a simple discussion on how to bring Coxon Mews to life and let Ashby residents know all about the many great businesses located here, on Rushton’s Yard and across the lanes, courtyards and mews throughout the town centre. After much support from Ashby Town Council and many local businesses it has grown into what will, without doubt, be a fabulous day with something for all the family to enjoy. On Saturday 1st September, Coxon Mews will be transformed into a covered market with over 20 local businesses showcasing their products and services. Many of the businesses will be running special promotions and offers so don’t miss out. Just Gents will be running a pop-up barbers with cut price beard trims (no appointments necessary), Sweet Memory Lane will host a traditional pic’n’mix stall and Louby Lou’s will be offering boudoir photoshoots. As well as live music and entertainment from 10am to 4pm,

there will be a varie ety of food and drink sstalls serving refreshmen nts. This will include a B BBQ Taster by W Taylor Butchers, a range of street food from m Kerb Bears, sweet and savoury crepess from I Love Crepes and many more. m There will be tons o of family fun with kid’s competittions running throughout the day and a sandpit to enjoy outside Su uzy Q’s café (who will also be selling dairy free ice-cream). Mutleys of Ashby will be running a fantastic dog show in Rushton’s Yard which all the family is bound to enjoy. Events will take place throughout town and a map of all venues taking part can be collected from an information point outside Boots on Market Street on the day. The aim of the day is to remind everybody just how many fabulous retailers and businesses we have here in Ashby and maybe introduce you to a few you never knew were here! To find out more and keep p up p to date with all that will happen on n the day look for ‘Ashby Inside Out’ on Facebook. To enter your pooch in the dog show, test your cupcakes in th he baking competition or enter your best dressed vegetables (wh hy not?) then simply pop intto Ashby Toolbox or Ash hby Tourist Info for an entry form. With over £50 in prize money you could be a winner on the day.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Watering in the summer

What a fabulous summer it’s been, totally wonderful! Immediately though gardeners will say, that the grass is like straw and hours are wasted just watering. Personally my pet hate for this time of year is that the hose isn’t quite long enough and why does it get so terribly tangled? Of course the solutions a flexible expandable hose, available in most garden centres. It might not rain for ages but if you have in place water butts to catch surface rain water from roofs, you are recycling watering and doing your bit for the environment. I believe water butts are essential in even a small garden and all new houses should have them as standard. These days water butts can be quite decorative and many are designed as attractive planters. Styles range from old fashioned milk churns or wooden barrels to bright modern cubes with impressive trendy detailing. The colour range is more diverse than it used to be too and the material that

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 the butts are made from isn’t just limited to plastic. The ceramic versions can look fabulous, although the price reflects that of course! There are a variety of sizes available to suit your requirements. Narrow designs are ideal for narrow passageways or where you are tight on space. Another efficient method of watering which is low on physical effort is to have an irrigation system. This is essentially a leaky pipe, sometimes called a porous pipe, often set on a timer. The porous pipe attaches to a standard hose. When it is turned on the water drips out of the pipe around the plants. The leaky hose is positioned around the plants to drip water just where it is needed. This system is particularly good if you are regularly away or just don’t have time for watering. The pipe doesn’t look very attractive so I try and hide it under foliage of plants or mulch over the top of it. A big advantage to the leaky pipe system is that it is not covered by a hosepipe ban. If there is not a hosepipe ban then sprinklers are effective. It is best to do this in the early morning so that as little water as possible is lost through evaporation. If you have plants that are susceptible to rotting, such as silver leaf plants, like Lavender, water in the morning so that the sun dries off excess moisture. A trough of water, or water bath where potted plants are put into water so it goes half way up the pot for a few minutes and then the plants are removed is an effective way of ensuring that the roots get water and this method is especially good for young plants where watering with a hose just wash the small plants from their pots. Lastly, simply mulching around plants will help the soil retain moisture.

Happy gardening!

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS The greatly anticipated ‘Skylight’ comes to the Ashby Venture Theatre this August! On a bitterly cold London evening, school teacher Kyra Hollis receives an unexpected visit from her former lover Tom Sergeant, a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires.

“A magnificent chamber play by one of the major playwrights... “ - New York Post

David Hare is the author of 29 plays for stage, including Plenty, Racing Demon, Amy’s View and Stuff Happens. His many screenplays include The Hours and The Reader.

“Gripping... the skill with which Hare knits together passionate arguments about love, guilt and responsibility is enormously impressive” - The Independent

Skylight was originally produced at the National Theatre in 1995, before transferring to the West End and Broadway, and won an Olivier Award for Best Play.

The show will run from 30th August to 8th September at 7.30pm each evening. Tickets cost £9.00 - Book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

“There is a bruising emotional truth in the writing and a zinging, stinging mixture of wit and anger... “- Daily Telegraph

Foot Files: CORNS A Corn is a very dense area of skin that has a centre to it. People describe having a corn is like having a pebble in their shoe or even a splinter of glass. WHY DO THEY DEVELOP? Corns form due to abnormal pressures, stresses or friction upon the skin that cause it to thicken and form a centre. • Bunions and claw toes causing friction between joints. • Flat or high arched feet causing abnormal pressures on the joints. • Tight or loose fitted footwear. • Sweaty feet causing soft corns.

HOW WILL MY PODIATRIST HELP? • Podiatrists use sterile surgical blades to safely remove the corn. This normally causes no bleeding or discomfort. • We may use padding or strapping to deflect pressure or stresses. • We may use products to keep feet dry. • We may advise on certain orthotics or insoles to help with arches and gait (after appropriate assessment). • We will provide self-care tips.

FURNACE

Moira Furnace Folk Festival From Friday 17th to Sunday 19th August Moira Furnace Folk Festival returns to Moira Furnace for its tenth event!!

The festival features some well-known and talented main acts, plus local and national, up and coming artists. Most events take place on the green site of Moira Furnace, with a ceilidh on Saturday night at the Miners Welfare, just a few hundred metres from the main site. Sing-arounds and sessions also take place at local pubs, some 10 minutes’ walk from the festival main site. There are concerts all weekend in two marquees, each with a raised stage and PA system, plus singarounds in the Loft of the Furnace building. A wide variety of dancing including Morris, Appalachian Step and Rapper dancing can be seen, as well as civil war re-enactments with the Society of the Open Rope. Saturday night’s Ceilidh will be in the form of a dance along with Alterego, the talented family band specialising in foot tapping ceilidh dance music and playing lively original and traditional tunes. No experience is required, as knowledgeable caller, Bob McLean, will lead everyone through the dances. You’ll be guaranteed a fun filled evening of lively dancing, good music and great company!. There’s plenty of fun entertainment and activities for the children as well as a choice of trade and food stalls, plus a real ale bar. On Sunday 19th August a Peace Concert will

be held from 12.30pm to 3pm. As part of the centenary commemorations of the Great War there will be a variety of performances including songs, poems, spoken word and tunes. Weekend tickets are available as well as tickets for Friday evening, all day Saturday and all day Sunday or just the Saturday night ceilidh. You can even choose to stay and camp to enjoy the weekend to the max! ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS The museum continues to be very grateful to donors of artefacts and documents. We have just had a ‘wardrobe’of ladies’replica costumes for the English Civil War period - from someone who took part in the Sealed Knot Re-enactment shows. We have also been given a late 18th or early 19th century sword from the estate of a Coleorton resident. We will be contacting ‘professional’ militaria experts to learn more about its likely provenance. Another interesting donation consists of several small pieces of shrapnel which landed on Overseal in 1916 - i.e. the First World War. We are asking our friends at the Magic Attic in Swadlincote to see if the local press made mention of any such incident. The latest annual publication of the museum journal ‘Ashby de la Zouch, Past and Present’ is now available. This is the 20th such edition, each

A full list of the contents of every journal can be found on our website: www.ashbymuseum.org.uk A very successful ‘Spa Town’ walk, led by Ken Hillier, took place on a beautiful sunny evening last month. A group of 20 people learned about the emergence of Ashby as a spa town in the mid 1800s. Our last walk in August is now fully booked. We hope to organise further walks next year.

ON THE BEAT The summer Drink Drive Drug Campaign started on 1st June this year and Leicestershire Police made 66 arrests nine more than on the same day in June 2017. These current arrests also include sixteen for drug

driving, which is five more than last year.

The arrests are almost evenly divided between the city and county with 30 being detained in Leicester, along with 15 arrests in Charnwood and 6 in North West Leicestershire. A third of the arrests have been between 6am and 6pm. Younger drivers are still getting caught out with 19 of those arrested aged 24 or under. Fourteen of the arrests have been following a road traffic collision. The highest breath test reading has been 142, which is over four times the drink drive limit. COOKERY TIPS

with Olivia & Hannah Rackham-Sayer – local residents and keen cooks!

When this issue reaches you, we will be several weeks into the school summer holidays and hopefully still enjoying some glorious summer weather. With this in mind my thoughts turned to a fabulous festival in the United States (and one I really think we should adopt.) On the third Sunday in July, every year, they celebrate National Ice Cream Day. (Amazingly, this was officially decreed in July 1984 by President Ronald Reagan when he declared this time to be national ice cream month.) People are often scared to make ice cream, as many recipes involve lengthy beating, then freezing, then beating again. The solution is our recipe for no churn ice cream. No ice cream maker required! My children and I first made it when we were on holiday in Devon, it has only 3 ingredients, is quick and easy and tastes divine! It’s so easy the children can probably do it themselves!

Easy Vanilla ice cream YOU WILL NEED • ½ a 397g can sweetened condensed milk • 600 ml double cream • 1 tsp vanilla extract 1. Simply put the condensed milk, cream and vanilla into a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thick and quite stiff ( a bit like clotted cream). 2. Scrape into a plastic container, cover with cling film or a lid and freeze until solid.

Really nice with fresh fruit and/ or crumbled up crunchie bars/ flakes or smarties!

Enjoy!

We love pizza in our house, we cheat a little and use a bread mix for the base quite often, but I was looking for an even quicker way to make it! We’ve tried this with pitta breads and it works well with these too, but the naans were better. This is another school holiday friendly dish as it can be on the table in twenty minutes and children can probably make their own.

Speedy Naan-bread pizza YOU WILL NEED • Pack of Plain Naan breads • 2 tbsp tomato puree (or you can use a jar of pizza topper, don’t feel guilty!) • 1 tsp mixed herbs • Onion • Peppers • Sweetcorn • Cheese 1. Mix the tomato puree with 2 tablespoons water and the herbs (or use your pizza topping!) 2. Chop up your toppings. 3. Place naans on a tray and spread with sauce, sprinkle over the toppings and cheese. 4. Bake 8- 12 mins until the cheese is melted. Nice with a salad.

FITNESS TIPS

It’s a

family affair!

Fitness Republic really is a family affair, and this month’s article is a quick Q&A with Simon’s brother Ben. Ben is an amazing coach that has been helping our clients achieve fantastic results here at Fitness Republic! How old are you?

I’m 38, but I feel like I’m still in my 20s!

How many years have you been training?

I’ve been training on and off since I was 16, but it’s only been the last 10 years that I’ve been consistent and been able to get real results.

How many times a week do you train?

I train on average 4 to 5 times a week depending on my goal at the time. When I need to get a little leaner I up my training to 6 days a week.

Why do you refer to yourselves as coaches and not a personal trainer? We are of course all qualified personal trainers and we adhere to the same principles as personal trainers, however we believe

68

that a coach provides more. We aim to give 360 degree support because we know it takes more than just putting someone through a workout programme to get results. We want you to hit all your goals, and together we can achieve some amazing results. As coaches we listen better, relate when appropriate, and show empathy instead of sympathy.

What is the simplest piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to pursue a healthier lifestyle?

Focus and consistency, just like one bad meal won’t make you fat, one week of exercise won’t make you thin. You’ve got to focus on the outcome you want and consistently work towards it. If you slip up on one day, just press the reset button and get back on track the next day!

Can people really lose weight and get toned without having to give up their favourite foods?

Absolutely, it’s more to do with the amount we eat that makes us put on weight, more than what we eat. As long as you are in an energy deficit and you are consuming the right amounts of macronutrients (protein, carbs and fats) then you will lose weight. You can have your cake and eat it… just not all of it!

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

What’s your secret for keeping motivated? Having a big enough reason why...this is individual to everyone. You may want a toned, lean sexy body, but if you don’t know why you want it, you’re probably going to fail. Focus on a target and work slowly towards it.

What’s the most common exercise myth you hear from clients in the gym?

I’m a girl so I don’t want to do weights because I don’t want to get big and muscly… you won’t get big from lifting weights alone, you will get lean and strong. It’s very hard to put on muscle size for anyone, especially for females. You would seriously have to bulk up your calorie intake to put on muscle mass.

Girls are always seeking the ‘perfect butt’… What exercises would you recommend for developing the perfect gluteus maximus?

Squats, lunges, more squats and every variation of squats! Don’t forget to progressively increase the weight as and when you can.

I have no time to exercise, what can I do?

Simple answer is anything, you don’t have to spend hours in the gym, the important thing is to keep moving even if all you can do is get out for a walk or a swim with the kids. You could wake up 10 minutes earlier and do a few bodyweight exercises in your bedroom. You will make better progress in the gym, but anything is better than nothing. Everyone can find ten minutes to exercise a day, just don’t get overwhelmed thinking that you have to spend a certain amount of time exercising to make it beneficial.

Can you tell me something about yourself most people probably don’t know?

There are many things I could tell you that I probably shouldn’t (haha). I have a love for the guitar and have been playing since I was 13, I used to play in a band a few years ago and would love to do another. Aside from playing I was a sound engineer for U2UK and I’m also a website designer and have just redesigned the Fitness Republic website, check it out at www.fitnessrepublic.co.uk for our latest blogs and more. MONEY MATTERS

10 Essential Tips for

Business Start-Ups

Starting a new business can be a scary and daunting experience when there are so many financial things to consider which is why we have put together this short guide. 1. Your Business Plan A well-drawn up business plan not only crystallises in your own mind the nature of the project and the timing of any required funding, but is vital to any lending institution. We can provide objective assistance with writing your business plan, based on our experience in helping start-ups across the country. 2: Business Structure Having made the decision to be your own boss, it is important to decide the best legal and taxation structure for your enterprise. The structure for you will depend on your personal situation and your future plans. We are often asked, ‘Should I form a Limited Company?’The reality is that there is no easy answer. Each situation has to be judged individually. 3: Finance & Funding Every business needs finance and starting up is often expensive. Baldwins are able to provide guidance on the types of finance available, outline the planning required before approaching any lenders and help determine the type of finance best suited to your business and who to approach. Crowdfunding is becoming a reality for many start-ups across the UK now, which involves raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. 4: People Without good people your business cannot succeed, and for a new or growing business, making the right recruitment decisions can be the difference between long-term success or failure. Consequently, you need a structured process for recruitment. 5: Financial Records and Systems We advise self-employed people across the country on all aspects of managing financial records and systems. Our experts advise on financial accounting systems and train you in how to use the right packages like Sage and Xero. We can chat to you about what best suits your needs as well as advise and train you on how to use the software. 6: Marketing & Growth Most aspects of your business depend on successful marketing. The overall marketing umbrella covers

76

advertising, public relations, promotions and sales. Without planning your marketing, your business may offer the best products or services in your industry, but none of your potential customers would know about it. Without marketing, sales can crash and companies can close. 7: Franchising Franchising is becoming increasingly popular. There are advantages and disadvantages to franchising and points to consider when considering operating as a franchise which we can discuss with you. 8: Insurance Insuring your business is just one of the many key considerations when starting up. Although most business people understand the need for insurance, a surprising number of businesses are uninsured, under– insured, or insured with out–of date–policies. 9: Taxation Running a business involves lots of taxation issues and we advise you seek financial advice for this to ensure you maximise on your profits and don’t pay too much tax or fail to pay the right tax. 10: Credit control If you fail to check that the customer can support the amount of credit you are granting, your business will not survive for very long. Talk to us about things to consider.

Get in touch with our team of experts today who are expert business advisers and financial advisers who work with start-ups and can help on all of the above, please contact Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

One month to our new season!

AMTG will soon be welcoming our members, new and old, back to rehearsals for our new season.

We have just had our AGM, and a newly-elected committee is in place, with a new chairman, Carl Benfield leading the group. The outgoing chair, Karen Walker, remains on the committee and we also welcome new committee member Debra Freeman. There’s a lot to do and we are raring to go! Uppermost in our mind is our production for April 2019, The Pirates of Penzance – the Broadway version. We look forward to hearing from anyone who just can’t wait to be a pirate, a policeman, or a major-general’s daughter! We will be holding new members’ auditions at the beginning of September. If you would like to join us please send a message to enquiries@amtg.org.uk For this show our president and musical director, Alan Hutchinson, and resident accompanist Siân Turner, will be putting us through our musical paces.

AMTG are known for our very professional attention to detail, and this show is full of ensemble numbers that will keep all the members involved throughout. Our producer/director David McKnight is currently working his way through the rehearsal book – as usual David will add his own inimitable touches to produce a high quality production that our audiences are used to enjoying. You’ll have to come and see it at our lovely theatre home, the 400 Hall at Repton School. Tickets will be £16, with some reduced price seats at £13. For more information please visit amtg.org.uk

PET’S CORNER

What your rabbit needs to be happy and healthy Rabbits have specific needs if they’re to live happy and healthy lives. From clean living conditions to a nutritional diet, here are some of their basic, nonnegotiable requirements for health and happiness. Living quarters A spacious, safe and secure hutch with an attached and enclosed outdoor run allows your rabbit to get the exercise they need, as they love to run around and chew or play with toys. They require a safe, quiet and enclosed place to rest – this could be a separate ‘room’ within the hutch, or an area away from the main living quarters divided by hay or straw. Protection from extreme weather, and predators such as foxes or other pets in the area, is also important. Nutrition Rabbits need lots of fresh vegetables, particularly leafy greens, rabbit pellets, a little fruit, and plenty of hay to grind down their teeth. They also like to

eat grass, but not the clippings frrom your lawnmower – grass should be growing within theirr reach, or fre eshly picked in clu umps from the garden. A fresh supply of clean drinking water is essential, and in summer you’ll need to change it regularly so they don’t pick up any bacteria. Health checks Their nails and teeth need to be checked regularly to make sure they’re not too long, and also their tails and bottom area, particularly in the summer when fly strike is a huge danger. Having a vet check them at least annually is also essential for long-term health.

BEAUTY TIPS

Staying safe in the sun Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you… First up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 orr over. However, the SPF only re elates to UVB rays, not UVA rayys. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then n need to apply it at least 15 minu utes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hourrs. Wele eda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. 100

Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland & Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter: most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert: if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Gazing skyward As I write this, we’re enjoying a long spell of blue skies and hot sunshine - hopefully it will last! Each evening, nature has treated us to spectacular displays of colour as the sky has gradually turned various shades of orange, red, pink and purple until the sun finally disappears. Not content with just being the canvas for a beautiful sunset, the sky has also become the backdrop for hundreds and thousands of tiny pinpricks of light as darkness gradually falls and the stars become visible. The more you look, the more you see! You may even catch a glimpse of a ‘shooting star’, as the annual Perseid meteor shower takes place (between 17th July and 24th August). Apparently, the Perseids are caused by Earth

104

passing through the debris left behind Comet Swift-Tuttle. At its peak (12th August) there could be up to 60-70 meteors visible per hour so even the least patient of us should see at least one! If you find time to gaze into the night sky for a glimpse of the Perseids, stop for a moment to get a sense of how vast it is. How tiny we are in comparison with the universe, and how big God must be! As the psalmist wrote: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?” (Psalm 8:3-4) But the Bible tells us that God does care for us. How amazing is that?! Useful passage to look up: Psalm 8 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020 ONE IN TEN BRITONS ADMIT THEY ARE BAD WITH MONEY  HOW TO BUCK THE TREND A recent surveyi has shown that for many, building up their savings is not top of their agenda. Everyone should think about putting some money aside for emergencies, and for the bigger things in life like the deposit on a home, a child’s education or a wedding. So, for most of us having some cash that we can access quickly to pay for unexpected things like an unforeseen bill, and some that steadily builds up over the years, makes good financial sense. An ISA is a simple, tax-free way to save or invest for the future. The advantage of these types of account is that you don’t pay tax on the interest or dividends you earn, or the increase in the value of your investments. There are now several different types of ISA available, designed by the government to encourage everyone to save or invest for their future. The basic types are: • Cash ISAs and stocks and shares ISAs for savers and investors • Junior ISAs for children • Help to Buy ISAs for those saving for their first home • Lifetime ISAs for those saving to buy their first home or who wish to save until age 60. WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PENSION SCHEMES Investment means introducing your money to risk, but also offers the prospect of getting better returns than are available

on savings accounts. Fledgling investors often begin by drip-feeding smaller amounts of money into ISAs, collective investments such as unit trusts, managed funds or bonds, rather than risking a lump sum at what could turn out to be a bad time. If you put your money into stock market investments you should be prepared to do so for at least five years and preferably longer. You’ll also need to think about your attitude to risk, as this will have a bearing on the type of investments that will be right for you. If you invest in the stock market, your capital will rise and fall according to how the economy and markets here and globally are performing, meaning that you need to be able to cope with peaks and troughs. Whether you’re saving or investing to help your children, want to retire early, or simply build your lifetime wealth, good advice can ensure that you make the most of your money and avoid the pitfalls. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020 i PiggyBank, 2018

BOOK REVIEWS

Inspire your wanderlust

Thinking about booking a last-minute holiday? These books should help to inspire your wanderlust. (Or just transport you to distant climes while you’re lounging in your garden.) The Earth From The Air Yann Arthus-Bertrand It’s been almost 20 years since Yann Arthus-Bertrand first set out to capture aerial photography of some of the most remote places on Earth. The result – The Earth From the Air – went on to sell more than 3 million copies. A new edition was released last year, which includes 100 stunning new photographs and commentary from the likes of Jane Goodall and Matthieu Ricard. Breathtaking. Wanderlust: A Book Club Sampler from Simon & Schuster This travel-inspired sampler is only available as a free Kindle ebook. It includes excerpts from several novels, including An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais. Also included are the authors’ favourite travel-related memories and notes and tips for book clubs. Perfect for dipping into on a summer’s evening, Wanderlust may help you to find your next book and your next holiday destination. The Bean Trees Barbara Kingsolver Determined to avoid ending up like her Kentucky classmates – pregnant and married before she’s 18, Taylor buys a beaten up old car and a tank of petrol, and heads west. By the time her car breaks down in Arizona, she has a three-year-old Cherokee girl in tow. First published 30 years ago, The Bean Trees beautifully evokes the landscape and spirit of 1980s Southwestern America.

Adventures of a Young Naturalist Sir David Attenborough In 1954, David Attenborough began his exploration of the world, seeking out rare animals for London Zoo and sharing his experiences with a captive TV audience back at home. Adventures of a Young Naturalist charts his adventures across Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay, from coming face-to-face with Komodo dragons and giant armadillos to befriending a young male orangutan. Numerous photographs help to bring the tales to life. The Road to Little Dribbling Bill Bryson In The Road to Little Dribbling, Bill Bryson sets out to explore Britain once again – 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island. Not only is it highly entertaining, but The Road to Little Dribbling is packed full of facts and wry observations. You’ll veer from rolling your eyes at Bryson’s ‘grumpy-old-manishness’ to vigorously nodding your head, to snorting with laughter, to booking a train ticket to explore a corner of this island you haven’t yet stumbled upon. The Art of Travel Alain de Botton Alain de Botton explores the reasons why we travel and discusses how we can make the most of our experiences. He covers everything from holiday romances to hotel mini-bars. It’s a book about taking pleasure in our surroundings (however mundane) and taking the time to look, really look, at the world around us.

CHESS PUZZLE

Whi hitittee too pla lay ay and annd win inn FAST CHESS Chess can be slow with up to 7 hours for a game. But it can also be fast, as at the Paris GCT Tournament in June 2018. Here the slower games were 25 minutes each and the fast games only 5 minutes for all the moves, with a 3 second increment per move. This is a position from the tournament, Wesley So v Fabiano Caruana. The endgame has already been going on for 33 moves, but here white has a quick win. Can you see the move? At our club, the friendly games are without a clock, so it’s quite relaxed. Visit the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby. The chess club meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm. Beginners are welcome. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details or just turn up. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
