The Memory Man

Could you remember all the cards in a deck of cards if they were in random order? Dave Farrow, a Guinness World Record holder for the greatest memory, remembers all 3068 cards from 59 decks of cards in random order. How does he do it?

This is what he says about his unique skill.

Reporter: When did you first discover that you have this gift of memorizing cards?

Dave: Well, I don’t have a gift. Memorization is a skill, and it can be taught. So we can all actually train our brains to memorize better.

Reporter: What kind of student were you in school?

Dave: At first I didn’t do very well in school. I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. But I wanted to do better, so I went on a two-year quest to discover everything I could about memory. I went from being a very poor student to being at the top of many of my classes. This happened so quickly that some of my teachers thought I was cheating and lowered my scores. But when I demonstrated my memory techniques, they believed me.

Reporter: Do you have any advice you would give a student who is struggling in school and with tests?

Dave: There are many tips, and here are a few: Break up large tasks into smaller parts. Take each part and do it fast, then take a break. And repeat. You can also visualize what you read. But the most important thing that I learnt is: Don’t believe what other people say about you. Don’t let people put you in a box because then you will be in that box for the rest of your life. You have to decide what you want to be and what will make you happy.

You will have noticed that Joe is on his own in that picture.

To tell the truth, speeding around a racetrack isn’t that much fun when you are on your own, even if you do have a squillion pounds. You really need someone to race against. The problem was Joe didn’t have any friends. Not one.

Mum stopped what she was doing and stared at me.

“A refugee kid?” she asked, with a frown on her face. “Where did you hear those words?”

“And Mrs Khan didn’t tell you anything about him?”

“I see ...” Mum fell silent. She poured milk into the milk pan, and waited for it to heat up. I knew she was thinking about something serious, because she was rubbing her chin a lot.

Mum gave me a look. She has at least twenty different looks that give me a secret message, and I know what all of them mean. This one meant, stop asking me. Then she said, “Do you remember those lifeboats on the telly, darling? The ones with lots of people squeezed in that you were asking about?”

I nodded. It had been in the middle of the summer holidays. Mum and I were in the sitting room. She was doing a crossword and I had been colouring in some drawings I had done, and the news was on in the background. The TV screen had suddenly changed from a woman reporter standing on a beach to a video of lots of people in boats in the middle of the ocean, all looking scared. I had felt sorry for them and asked Mum what was going on.

“Do you remember what I said?” asked Mum. “You said ... that they were trying to find somewhere new to live because their home wasn’t nice to live in any more.”

“Exactly, my love. They were what people call refugees. And children like the new boy in your class are called refugee kids, because they’ve had to leave their homes, and travel very far to try and find a new house to live in.” (...)

Mum got up and took her mug to the sink. “Now, I know you want to make friends with this new boy, but you mustn’t be too eager. He’ll need lots of time and space first. OK?” I nodded, even though I didn’t really understand what she meant. If I was the new boy, I would use up all my time to make as many friends as I could – especially if I had just run away from bullies that were bigger and more horrible than the bullies at school! I wondered if I should tell my mum about all the lemon sherbets and white mice and the orange with the smiley face I had given him, but then she said, “The world has never been kind to refugees,” in a sad way. She sounded just like she did whenever she talked about my dad. So even though I wanted to ask at least four more questions, I decided not to say anything else. (...)

As I lay waiting for Mum to come in, I thought about all the things she had said – about the bombs and the boats and the bad people who were so greedy that they made everyone want to run away from them. I had so much to tell Josie and Tom and Michael! Especially as I don’t think their mums and dads would have told them half as much as my mum had told me.

It’s one of the things I love most about Mum. She always tries to answer my questions no matter how tired she is or how hard my questions are. And she always tells me the absolute truth. Michael’s parents are always saying “Not now dear” or “We’ll tell you when you’re older”, and Josie’s mum keeps telling her that girls are meant to be quiet and not ask so many questions. But my mum never says anything like that to me. I think it’s because of all the books she reads. Mum says that the best books leave you with more questions than answers, and that that’s the fun part – you have to try and find the answers for yourself somewhere else. And Dad used to say that the more questions you ask, the more clever you’ll be. Because that’s the only way you’ll ever know more than you already do.

I think this is the first time in my life that I’ve ever wanted to be extra, extra clever about anything, because by the time Mum had come to tuck me in for the night, I had a long list of questions in my head that I wanted to ask the new boy. Eleven exactly. This is what they looked like:

One of the most popular books that come out every year is the Guinness World Records. Here you can read about many records throughout the world. Who is the tallest man in the world? How old is the oldest woman in the world? What is the highest mountain? How many hot dogs can you eat in three minutes? Actually, the Guinness World Records holds a record itself: it is the most popular and best-selling book of all the serial books in the world.

The first Guinness World Records was published in Britain in 1955. The book is sponsored by a famous brewery in Ireland, the Guinness Brewery.

It is said that the original idea for the book came in 1951 when Sir Hugh Beaver, who was the managing director of the Guinness Brewery, started arguing with another person about Europe’s fastest bird. Sir Hugh could not find the answer in his books. He then got the brilliant idea of making the Guinness World Records. It was a hit!

Can you imagine living in a full-size LEGO house? In 2009, Top Gear presenter James May and 1000 helpers made a two-storey house entirely out of LEGO. They used 3.3 million differently coloured LEGO bricks and every little detail was made out of LEGO! To get into the house you needed a LEGO key that fitted the LEGO door.

In the kitchen, there were shelves, a sink and kitchen utensils such as a toaster, a bread bin and an iron.

In the bathroom, there was a toilet, a basin with taps and a shower. They all worked, so you could actually use the toilet and wash your hands in the bathroom! Or perhaps take a hot shower?

In the bedroom you could sleep in a very uncomfortable bed.

The Memory Man Could you remember all the cards in a deck of cards if they were in random order? Dave Farrow, a Guinness World Record holder for the greatest memory, remembers all 3068 cards from 59 decks of cards in random order. How does he do it?

This is what he says about his unique skill.

Reporter: When did you first discover that you have this gift of memorizing cards?

Dave: Well, I don’t have a gift. Memorization is a skill, and it can be taught. So we can all actually train our brains to memorize better.

Reporter: What kind of student were you in school?

Dave: At first I didn’t do very well in school. I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. But I wanted to do better, so I went on a two-year quest to discover everything I could about memory. I went from being a very poor student to being at the top of many of my classes. This happened so quickly that some of my teachers thought I was cheating and lowered my scores. But when I demonstrated my memory techniques, they believed me.

Reporter: Do you have any advice you would give a student who is struggling in school and with tests?

Dave: There are many tips, and here are a few: Break up large tasks into smaller parts. Take each part and do it fast, then take a break. And repeat. You can also visualize what you read. But the most important thing that I learnt is: Don’t believe what other people say about you. Don’t let people put you in a box because then you will be in that box for the rest of your life. You have to decide what you want to be and what will make you happy.

Felix Baumgartner became world famous when he jumped from a helium balloon in the stratosphere. What makes a person do something like that?

Ever since he was a boy Felix was a daredevil. He climbed trees because he loved the bird’s-eye view. His biggest dream was to fly in the sky.

As soon as he turned sixteen, Felix went to the local skydiving club and learned to skydive. From that moment, he was addicted.

Felix likes all kinds of risky sport, and his hobbies are climbing, boxing, motocross, helicopters and rally driving. He is a helicopter pilot, a skydiver and a base jumper. His nicknames are “B.A.S.E. 502” and “Fearless Felix”.

Felix spent five years training before he jumped from the stratosphere on 14 October 2012. He skydived about 39 000 metres at a speed of 1342 kilometres per hour. His family and the whole world were watching as he was pulled up to the stratosphere in a small space capsule. He landed safely on the ground nine minutes later.

Alan Eustace broke Felix’s record for highest free-fall parachute jump in 2014, but still Felix’s famous jump from the stratosphere has a lot of records. Maybe you can find out what they are?

On 14 June 1777, the American colonists chose a new flag. It had 13 stripes and 13 stars to stand for the first 13 colonies. The stripes were red and white and the white stars were on a blue square. Each time a new state became part of the country, a new star was added. Now the flag has 50 stars: one for each state. American schoolchildren all over the country pledge allegiance to the flag. Location California is a state in the southwest of the USA. It has the largest state population in the USA. It is the third largest state in size and borders the Pacific Ocean. The state has different landscapes with deserts, mountains, beaches and farmland. In the past, the state was a part of Mexico and today Spanish is the second most spoken language after English.

The Flag The flag is called The Bear Flag. It shows a brown grizzly bear walking on grass towards a red five-pointed star. The bear stands for strength, and the star represents power and independence.

In October 1621, the English settlers had their first Thanksgiving feast. Today Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the USA. It is a time for sharing good food with family and friends.

Thanksgiving is the most important holiday for Americans. It is a holiday that unites people of all regions and beliefs.

What do people eat at a traditional Thanksgiving dinner? The roasted turkey is the most important dish on the table. Thanksgiving stuffing (also called dressing) is the food that goes inside the turkey. However, it has also become a side dish served with the main course. Thanksgiving stuffing is often made of bread and herbs, and sometimes sausage or other ingredients. Mashed potatoes and gravy are also a must. So is the cranberry sauce, which is often homemade.

Cornbread and corn on the cob are two ways to serve corn at Thanksgiving. Can you think of why corn is a must for this meal? Green bean casserole is also a common dish on the table. Many people serve candied yams, also known as sweet potatoes. Pumpkin pie and pecan pie are two favourite desserts with many families.

This meal is so huge that it is no wonder many families have leftovers for dinner for days!

Ajay took one sip of coffee and spat it out everywhere.

“What’s this?” he said looking horrified.

“It’s coffee.”

“Wait, is this what coffee really tastes like?” Ajay asked, flabbergasted.

After slavery was over in 1865, white people still discriminated against African American people. White people and black people went to different schools, different churches and different stores.

Here are three African American people who had a dream that life could be better for people of all colours in the USA.

Rosa Parks fought for her rights in the African American Civil Rights Movement. One day, in 1955, she was on her way home from work in Montgomery, Alabama. She found a seat at the front of the bus. When a white man got on the full bus, the bus driver told her to give him her seat. Rosa refused. The bus driver called the police and Rosa was arrested. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other African Americans thought this was unfair.

They decided to start a boycott. Black people didn’t take the buses for over a year. They also took Rosa’s case to court.

The African Americans won the court case. The Supreme Court, the highest court in the country, said everyone was free to sit wherever they liked on buses.

Rosa Parks became famous for her fight for equal rights. President Clinton gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996. There are many streets, schools, libraries and parks named after Rosa Parks in the USA.

When he was a small boy, he liked reading books, singing, riding a bicycle and playing American football and baseball.

He became a minister and later moved to Alabama.

King wanted to make America a better place for both black and white people. He helped Rosa Parks with her case against the Alabama bus company. He also went on peaceful protest marches to show that he wanted equal rights for African Americans. He gave a famous speech called “I have a Dream” in 1963. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1964. Sadly, he was killed in Tennessee in 1968.

Every day after lunch Mrs Jewls reads a story to the class.

Dana hated stories.

The last book Mrs Jewls had read was a story about a pig and a spider. The pig was real cute and the spider was very wise.

Dana thought it was a horrible book. It made her laugh too much. Everyone else laughed too, but the problem was that Dana always kept laughing long after everyone else in the class had stopped. It was very embarrassing. And sometimes she broke out laughing at a part that wasn’t even funny because she remembered something funny that had happened earlier.

That only made her laugh harder.

Once she broke out laughing in the middle of the arithmetic test because she remembered something funny the pig had said.

“There goes the giggle box,” said John.

She hated John.

But that wasn’t the worst part of the book. In the end the spider died.

Dana couldn’t stop crying. And she thought it was so silly, too, because in real life she didn’t even like spiders! She squashed them all the time.

John called her a leaky faucet. “Somebody better call a plumber to fix the leaky faucet,” he said.

She laughed through her tears. She hated John.

Once in music, they had learned a song about a dragon. When the song begins, the dragon is very brave, but then he loses his only friend, so he isn’t brave anymore. He just goes back to his cave, where he is sad and lonely for the rest of his life.

The song always made Dana cry. Every recess John and Joe would chase after her, singing it. She’d run across the playground with her hands over her ears and tears streaming down her face.

The bell rang. Lunch was over. Dana nervously walked up the stairs to Mrs Jewls’s room. Mrs Jewls would start a new book today. She hoped it wouldn’t be funny or sad. She hoped Mrs Jewls would read a boring story with no jokes.

When she got to class, John and Joe were standing by her desk waiting for her.

“Happy birthday, Dana,” said John. He was holding a present. It was wrapped in green paper and had a pink bow.

“But it’s not my birthday,” said Dana.

“Well, that’s okay,” said John. “You can have it anyway. Since I’m always teasing you.” He and Joe snickered.

Dana eagerly tore off the wrapping paper. Maybe John wasn’t so bad after all, she thought.

It was a box of tissues.

John and Joe laughed hysterically.

“That’s not funny!” said Dana. She raised her fist and started to chase after them.

Mrs Jewls rang her cowbell, and all the children settled quietly in their seats.

“We are ready to begin a new story,” said Mrs Jewls. She held up the book. “It’s called ’Stinky’.”

Dana laughed at the title, then quickly covered her mouth.

“It’s about a cute and playful skunk,” said Mrs Jewls.

“Oh, no!” gasped Dana. She knew animal stories always made her cry. The animal’s mother would get shot by human hunters. Or else humans would build a shopping center and destroy the animal’s home.

She hated humans. But she knew that was silly, because she was a human, and so were all of her friends. The only human she really hated was John, and she didn’t even think he was human!

Mrs Jewls read: “It was such a beautiful day, Stinky and his mother went for a walk across the forest. ’Hi, Stinky,’ said Charlie the chipmunk. ’Hi, Charlie,’ said Stinky. ’Come along, Stinky,’ called his mother.

The Vikings worshipped many gods, but Thor was their favourite because he was the biggest, strongest and bravest. He kept everyone safe from the evil giants. From the beginning of time, the gods and the giants disliked each other. The giants, who were huge and ugly, were jealous of the gods’ beauty. They also hated the gods for being cleverer than they were.

But more than anything, the giants wanted to destroy the earth, or Midgard as the Vikings called it. They wanted to destroy the gods’ favourite creation, human beings. But as long as Thor protected them, this could not be. No wonder the Vikings loved him best.

Because Thor was so important to them, many Vikings carved his likeness into the central pillars of their homes and even gave his name to one of the days of the week: Thursday, which means Thor’s Day.

Their stories told how Thor loved to fight giants. He had a special belt that doubled his strength! The best weapon in fighting giants, however, was Thor’s hammer. It was named Mjolnir the Thunderbolt and the giants feared it above all else, for it had crushed many of their skulls. The Vikings had so much confidence in Thor’s hammer that they often carried a small model of it for good luck and protection.

Thor usually travelled about in his carriage, which was pulled by Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, two goats that ground their teeth so hard that sparks flew. When they raced across the sky with Thor, their hooves kicked up huge thunderclouds down in Midgard, where humans lived, and Thor’s hammer made lightning flash. When they heard the big boom of thunder, people in Midgard rejoiced because this meant the hammer had hit its target and Thor had protected them. That’s why they called him “Thor, the Thunder God”.

A Highway for Bees If you stand on top of a tall building in Oslo, Norway, you may hear buzzing. Not from the traffic below, but from bees – buzzing their way from one side of town to the other.

A team of beekeepers, businesses and green organisations have made hotels, beehives and flowerbeds on rooftops to help the bees.

As the bees fly across town, they can find places to rest and eat. Along the way, they also collect pollen which they use to make honey. This route has become a kind of highway for bees, called the Pollinator Passage.

The beekeepers tend to the beehives and collect honey twice a year, in July and September. The taste and consistency of the honey depends on which plants the bees have been visiting. Some types of honey are clear and liquid, other types are creamy and soft. Some types have a light, fruity taste, while others taste bitter and sharp.

A bee makes just one spoon of honey in its lifetime. Imagine all the hard work that goes into a jar!

Ali won different competitions. He won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship three times and an Olympic gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Ali also had 37 knockouts in his career. He called himself “The Greatest”.

Ali would not fight in the Vietnam War because his religion did not believe in violence outside of the boxing ring. This made him famous around the world.

Ali gave up boxing in 1981. In the early 1980s, doctors found out that Ali had Parkinson’s disease. After that, he became well known for his social work and charity. He got the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 and was called “a man of peace”. He was a boxing legend, but also a fighter for religious and civil rights.

Muhammad Ali died on 3 June 2016, aged 74.

How We Got the Stars In the beginning, before people, when only animals were on Earth, all the animals worked, except for Coyote. He was lazy.

He merely watched while the other animals put the rivers where they are now, so that there would be water to drink.

According to Sami legend, Fávdná is one of the hunters who hunt for Sarvvis, a reindeer ox. Fávdná uses a bow and an arrow and the bow is called Fávdnadávi. It forms the handle in the Big Dipper and is always pointed towards Sarvvis.

Other hunters are the three Gállábártnit brothers. You find them in the belt of Orion. Their father is Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Do you know which star that might be?

The hunting scene starts early in the evening when the hunters appear in the sky one by one. Fávdná is ready with his bow and arrow and aims towards Sarvvis. The other hunters try to help.

Fávdná doesn’t dare to shoot because between him and Sarvvis stands Boahji, the nail of the sky. If someone hits it, the sky will fall down and all life on Earth will come to an end.

After a night of intense hunting, the hunters have to realise that Sarvvis is a difficult prey. One by one, the hunters have to give up, Sirius first and Fávdná last. Sarvvis can continue its grazing till the next night when the hunt starts over again.

The first rover, Sojourner, landed on Mars in 1997. Two more rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, landed on different parts of Mars in 2004. They have moved from place to place to explore and to take pictures and send information back to Earth. They study the rocks on Mars too, by digging into the rocks. Scientists on Earth use cameras to look at the dirt and rocks there.

In 2014, NASA landed a new rover on Mars, called Curiosity.

Curiosity has tools that help the scientists to study rocks, soil and air. It also looks for proof of life on Mars.

Sometimes it is challenging to be a rover on Mars. The air can be colder than the North Pole and there are dust storms.

Once Spirit slipped down a hill and Opportunity was trapped in a crater. These challenges give the scientists even more to study. They continually get more knowledge that may be important in our future.

I lied about my age.

I sort of gave the impression I was about thirty. Obviously I’m more sort of thirteen-ish. On my next birthday.

To be fair, everyone lies about their age. Adults pretend to be younger. Teenagers pretend to be older. Children wish they were grownups. Grownups wish they were children.

It’s not like I had to try very hard, is it? Everyone always thinks I’m older than I really am, just because I’m tall. In St Joan of Arc Primary the teachers seemed to think that height and age were the same thing. If you were taller than someone, you must be older than them. If you were tall and you made a mistake – even if it was only your first day – you got, “You should know better, big lad like you.”

Why, by the way? Why should a big lad know better just because he’s big? King Kong’s a big lad. Would he know the way to the toilet block on his first day at school? When no one had told him? No, I don’t think he would.

Anyway, a few hours back, the Infinite Possibility was supposed to complete a routine manoeuvre and basically it didn’t. It rolled out of orbit, wrecking all the communication equipment, and now I’m very lost in space.

I’ve brought this mobile phone with me – because it’s got It’ss also got an audio audio-diary pictures of home on it. It diary function.

That’s what I’m talking into now. Talking makes me feel less lonely. Unless you get this message you won’t know about any of this because this is a secret mission. They said that if it goes wrong they’re going to deny all knowledge of it. And us.

There’s five of us on board. The others are all asleep.

Can you believe that, by the way? We’re in a rocket, spinning hopelessly out of control and into Forever, and what is their chosen course of action?

When we got the manoeuvre just slightly wrong – just slightly enough to make us completely doomed – they all screamed for about an hour and then they dozed off.

I can’t sleep. I can’t get comfortable in sleeping bags because they’re always too small for me.

Plus I think if I stay awake I might have an idea. And save us all. That’s why I’m recording this on my Draxphone. If I do get home, I’m going to give it to you and then you’ll understand how I ended up in deep space when I said I was going pond dipping in the Lake District.

The slightly worrying thing is that I am sort of enjoying this.

Being doomed is Not Good. But being weightless is Outstanding. Every time I lean forward I do a perfect somersault. When I stretch my arms in the air I levitate. Back on Earth my only special skills are being above average in maths and height. Up here I’ve got so many skills I’m practically a Power Ranger.

Then there’s the stars (...).

The stars look different from here. There’s a lot more of them, for one thing. Big swirls and knots and clouds of them, so bright they hurt to look at. When you’re in it, space looks like the biggest firework display ever – except it’s on pause. It looks like freeze-frame fireworks. Even if you’re Completely Doomed, you’ve got to be impressed.

The only bad thing about the view is that it doesn’t include Earth. We haven’t seen it since we rolled out of orbit. I said to the others, “Well, it must be somewhere.
