One of the most successful artists of our time spoke about the mission of real art, about how to help people mission of real art, about how to help people with his work, how to change their lives, with his work, how to change their lives, and even the whole world for the better and even the whole world for the better
SIR DANIEL K. WINN
is an internationally recognized blue-chip artist, fine-art curator, awarded entrepreneur, and highly respected philanthropist. In recognition of his direct support to humanitarian causes, having directly assisted in raising millions of dollars for non-profit aid in the United States and Asia, Winn was honored the prestigious title of “Sir” when knighted in 2018 under the Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe-Nachod – one of only five recipients of the title in the history of the royal family
As a child refugee to the United States from Vietnam, Winn excelled in academics while at the same time supporting his younger sibling, allowing his parents to earn a living
He went on to study medicine; but during his study of reconstructive surgery at UCI undergraduate, he broke from family expectations and set out to pursue a life in the world of art He went on to work with a number of artists, elevating them to blue-chip museum caliber, in addition to developing his own artistic philosophy, "Existential Surrealism." Winn’s work has since been featured at esteemed exhibitions worldwide. Among many other distinctions, he is the Board Chairman of The Academy of Fine Art Foundation, CEO and curator of Masterpiece Publishing, Inc., and Founder of Winn Slavin Fine Art, one of the most prestigious art galleries in Beverly Hills. In 2019, the NEST Foundation in Hollywood also awarded Daniel Winn the “Philanthropic Artist of the Year”
Sir Daniel, it’s a great honour to meet you Thank you so much for accepting our offer to participate in this conversation and to tell our readers about your unique talent, which is very diverse. I know you as a brilliant entrepreneur, the owner of one of the most successful art galleries in the US, an art curator and art dealer. However, I would like to dedicate this interview to your creative career. You are one of the most prominent contemporary blue-chip artists of our time. What helped you reach such heights in the industry?
Well, it’s a question that a lot of people wonder about: How did you become successful as an artist?
I’ve been very fortunate to have a great manager, agent, and publicist Similar to Hollywood, if you have a good manager, publicist, and marketing team, they may be a catalyst to accelerate your success I’m an artist and also a businessman Having the right team is critical in my success since I cannot solely do everything I’m good at what I do as a creative artist, but I rely on others to get my works exhibited and shared with the world so viewers can see my works and understand my philosophy
Initially you planned to work in a completely different industry and wanted to become a surgeon What prompted you to radically change the direction of your activity and devote yourself to art?
I always had a desire to create art – whether in paintings or sculptures I wanted to make an impact in the world during my lifetime. But my parents always wanted me to become either a doctor or an engineer. I was not fan of being an engineer so to be a doctor was my only other option. After five years in college going to pre-med, I had an epiphany that I wanted to do something more. As an artist, I felt that my work could heal people emotionally and intellectually, rather than just physically. So, at this turning point, I thought that if I became a doctor, I could possibly help very limited people But as an artist, I could help much more I decided then to give up my medical profession and to start my career in the arts
That’s really impressive! I also think that our emotional health is very important, because it influences our physical condition…
My background has been very tumultuous I was put in an orphanage when my father went to war in 1971 and was assumed missing He was injured and in a coma for a year and eventually came back In 1975 we escaped from Vietnam to the US I’ve experienced extremes on both sides I understand the pain and the struggle of life as a child In my works I wanted to reveal a message that there is hope and to always think positively even when the pain is unbearable I am happy and physically well having embraced and come to terms with my past. In my artworks I wanted to relay the message that there is always an extreme opposite, and you should embrace both. There would be no life without death, no light without dark, and no happiness without sorrow.
Wow! That is a really strong message! How do you combine such a responsible mission of an artist with the work of a gallery owner? It’s not easy to be a creator and a manager at the same time
I believe most business people are likely left-brained, and most artistic people are right-brained And it is very rare that you could do both A lot of my artist colleagues don’t understand business and my business partners have no concept of how to create artistically
I am somehow blessed to be able to create and also to have a business mind However, it’s not easy to juggle between a fine artist and a businessman But I believe that I am able to do both and that has partly made a difference in my success
That’s really impressive! Talking about your creative side… Your work is often compared to the art of Salvador Dali. What other famous artists do you consider your inspirers and teachers?
Art is a very subjective and I feel all forms of art should be appreciated. For me, I appreciate the technical aspect works by DaVinci, Caravaggio, and Bernini. DaVinci can be a great mentor and Dali can be an inspiration as to how to view the world through surrealism.
The one that I admire most is DaVinci His work has a lot of symbolism and hidden messages that are fascinating In those times people were not able to voice their opinions about the government, religion, and society But DaVinci communicated his thoughts through his artworks in hidden messages I find this extraordinary and try to use this idea in my own works
As for Salvador Dali, I had a mutual exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum in 2019
Do your artworks help people to achieve any goals with its positive energy, or to find a spiritual way in their existence?
My artworks are inspired by spirituality. Some viewers see my works as very religious while others see them as scientific and controversial. The message of my works is to convey my philosophy and my emotion. When I have an epiphany or feel a certain way, I create an art series that communicates how I felt at that moment, sharing a part of my experience and existence My work is about positivity Even if you view my paintings or sculptures as profound and dark, it is done purposely to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts In my works I create dichotomies to show that without darkness there is no light, without femininity there is no masculinity, and without chaos there is no order I want to convey that, when you experience something bad, you should accept it, embrace it, and learn from it
I appreciate the concept of the subconscious in Dali’s works and the complexity of his surrealism Dali was very effected by Sigmund Freud, and of dreams and nightmares It is really fascinating how these works can help people understand themselves and their subconsciousness.
How would you describe your artistic style?
My style is very unique, which I coined “Existential Surrealism.” Existentialism is a philosophy about existence while Surrealism is concept about dreams and the subconscious.
Existential Surrealism gives another understanding about Universal Truth We are humans who desire to know the meaning of life: Why we are here? What is a purpose of our existence? And what is the key to understanding the Universe? I don’t have all the answers and no answers will be completely sufficient; however, I do try to communicate my understanding of Universal Truth through my artworks to give people a better understanding of their existence
Do you apply the Power of Mind and the Law of Attraction in your work?
I firmly believe in the power of mind and the law of attraction. Your thoughts can manifest your reality the way you want. It’s something that I truly have experienced. Even in physics and math, everything is about the order and law of attraction. If you exude positive energy, you will attract positivity.
Because then when something better comes along, it will be more valuable to you Because of death, we appreciate life so much more, and this is part of my philosophy in Existential Surrealism.
Have you had an experience in creating a land art, or to install a sculpture in a public place to make a more positive influence on people?
Most of my works are done for a public viewing, and some of my works are in permanent museum collections worldwide I am also very blessed that some of my collectors have donated my artworks to universities and public installations Currently, my art agent is working on installing one of my monumental sculptures in the City of Beverly Hills When I see my works displayed for the public to view, I feel honored that people can see the beauty in my works and appreciate the philosophy of how I perceive the world
In which museum of the world would you like to see your work? Do you have a museum of your dream?
I would be honored to have my works exhibited in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Vatican They are each very different with lots of exposure for many to see my artworks I have been to these spectacular locations and to this day dream that one day my manifestations will come to fruition
I noticed that the gas masks often show up in your artworks. What is the message there?
The mask is a symbol of a façade that who we are is not what we see. Our physical body is just an organic shell used as a temporary vessel, and in a few hundred years will turn to dust. The mask represents a masquerade, a borrowed shell of organic flesh. But it’s not who we really are. We are more than just a facade. When the masks come off, the true inner self is our eternal soul, spirit, and energy.
Your concept is very deep
Yes, I believe my work is very complex and profound I create my art as a visual language to be very in-depth so that viewers can interpret it as deeply as they want Viewers can appreciate the peripheral beauty of the artworks or they can analyze it more carefully in order to understand my principles of Universal Truth
If you were approached by an aspiring artist who was just starting out in art but waned to become as successful as you, what advice would you give him?
If you want to become an artist, expect that it’s not going to be easy. Focus on what is it that you want to create and how you feel as an artist and how that will make you feel. Success is not just about money but also about how you can make a positive impact on this world
Be prepared for a profession of loneliness since most of the time you are isolated in your studio creating your masterpieces If art is really what you want to do, then go for it And don’t expect financial gain and notability to be expedient Hopefully those will happen organically And even if that does not materialize the way you envision it, your impact in this world through creation of art will be remembered
That is the point! Sir Daniel, if you were going to make a collaboration with any fashion designer, who would it be?
I love fashion design because fashion is art. To me, fashion is wearable art It’s something that captures your personality, and it’s an artform of its own Some people gravitate to figurative art, landscape, or abstract art, and they incorporate these inspirations in what they wear I find fashion designers fascinating I would love to collaborate with these designers and create a fusion of art through haute couture Designers are creating their fashion to communicate their message about culture and society I appreciate Alexander McQueen, D&G, and Guo Pei I would love to collaborate with these designers, to do a collaboration of two artists fusing two ideas: visual and wearable art.
Would it be a famous fashion designer or an emerging one who is very talented?
I believe all fashion designers are very creative. It would be an honour to collaborate with a famous designer as well as an emerging one

Charity is very important to me, particularly the orphanages. I was an orphan and homeless as a child. I struggled and understand what it is to be alone, to be neglected and abandoned I want to make a difference with these children so that their suffering may be lessened
That’s fantastic! You have a very beautiful personality. I know that you are successful in different aspects of your life, but everybody has a dream What is your biggest dream?
And to not be judgmental but to embrace us all as human beings and respect one another My dream is to have humanity genuinely come together as one Sounds great! Thank you so much for this conversation. It really had a great impact on me, and hopefully it will help others and even change the lives of our readers.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my innermost thoughts and visions.

FABIAN LOPEZ: HOW TO SELL ART FOR MILLIONS
The hero of my interview is a strong player in the American art market, an art dealer who lives in Beverly Hills, works at Winn Slavin Fine Art, the top contemporary art gallery located on Rodeo Drive, and is also an art collector and photographer
Last year, Fabian and I worked together at several fairs in Florida - Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary and Context Art Miami 2022 I was fascinated by his professionalism and impeccable work with collectors, deep knowledge of art, and his ability to sell the pieces for very big checks .
I really wanted to learn from Fabian the secrets of art sales and communication with clients, and this opportunity presented itself.
I think this interview will be interesting not only to our colleagues - art dealers and gallery owners, but also to artists and even art collectors.
By Daria RTell us how it happened that you ended up in the art industry? Why did you choose this path in life?
I believe in destiny I believe that we attract a certain trajectory into our lives, or rather, the destiny itself finds us, and then we follow it with all our energy, using all opportunities, with the desire to succeed in what we follow. In my case, chance also played a huge role in choosing a profession It wasn't what I was specifically looking for At that time I was working in a different industry. I lived in Los Angeles, acting and modelling, but also working for some companies in the field of international marketing, travelling a lot When I finally settled in California, I met Sir Daniel Winn and Randall Slavin through my artistic friends just as they were opening their first Winn Slavin Fine Art galleries on Santa Monica Boulevard and Rodeo Drive They started inviting me to their events and art exhibitions I didn't know anything about art
But it attracted you, and you decided to immerse yourself completely in this industry?
Yes, art was attracting me a lot. At high school I enjoyed attending classes in fine arts, especially portraiting I was not very good at drawing, technically it was not so easy for me, and I decided to leave it for that moment But when I met Daniel and Randy, I felt this attraction to art again Looking at the work of other artists, I felt incredible inspiration I started to get interested in the art market: why does this work cost more and that one less, if the first work is much larger than the second one? What determines the value of the works of art? I couldn't figure out where pricing comes from in the art world, and that intrigued me insanely By visiting local art fairs and exhibitions, I started to «romantisize» art Then I realized that art is really what I want to do, and I did my best to enter this environmentlearning, gaining experience and connections I am very fortunate to have been mentored by Sir Daniel Winn, who has been a successful artist and art dealer for over 30 years Getting this invaluable information directly from him, I got an exclusive experience Actually he helped me to become what I am now in my profession.
Believe it or not, something similar happened to me I was also in modelling and film industry. One of the projects was finished, and I did not know what to do next, as if I was at a crossroads. And suddenly, in one movie I saw how paintings were being sold at an art auction, and it dawned on me - this was what I really wanted to do! I was so intrigued by the world of art and wanted to get there so much that I started studying like crazy, attending all the exhibitions and auctions, and the doors themselves began to open - even where it seemed impossible after six months I opened my first gallery
That's lovely! It happened so fast for me too In the first year with Winn Slavin Fine Art, I visited my first international art fair. It was Shanghai. And it seemed incredible!
And now you live in Beverly Hills, work in one of the most luxurious galleries on Rodeo Drive, go to international fairs, attend star events You are literally living the life of your dreams! However, I know that our profession is not only a beautiful facade. In reality, an art dealer or a gallery owner combines many different careers, and should have different skills and multitask
Tell me, what is your work week usually like?
Sometimes my weeks are very busy. And there are spontaneous days when it is difficult to predict how it will go, even if I have planned my day in advance For example, I know that I will be working in the gallery, that new pieces will be delivered, and I will study them. But suddenly my clients from other states or other countries call, and I need to help with the delivery of the purchased art, organize its transportation Or bring the pieces personally, help to hang them, look at the client's space, advise on the best way to place the works of art
Or help to select art in the interior. But this is exactly what I like most about our work! Spontaneity, adventure… For example, today, before our conversation, one of our artists and his team suddenly arrived to the gallery He started filming the content, sharing his plans, talking about new works. I love that there is always something new going on!
Yeah, our profession is not only talking about art with a glass of wine. You need to have knowledge in different areas, and combine different types of activities, switching in the moment
Exactly It is also important to keep in touch with art collectors We are constantly on the line with them - for example, we can go for coffee and talk about new works of one of the artists. Or attend an event together. I treat my clients
not as my customers, but, above all, as my friends and likeminded people
"I TREAT MY CLIENTS NOT AS MY CUSTOMERS, BUT, ABOVE ALL, AS MY FRIENDS AND LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE"
This is the right approach! What do you value most in your work?
You know, despite the stress that it entails sometimes, we are still doing something very beautiful and exciting. There is always much fun and joy in our work
That's for sure! Let's talk a little about the state of the art market today, and its tendencies What trends do you think are currently prevailing in the US art market?
I think pop art is dominating the market right now And this trend applies not only to the United States, but to the whole world. All international galleries showcase pop art to some degree Also, street art is rapidly gaining momentum I would even say that the most fashionable trend right now is a combination of pop art and street art. And, of course, abstraction is also in the top.
Artists who are engaged in both street art and gallery format are very popular I mean, those who transfer street art to the canvas For example, CANTSTOPGOODBOY from Malibu, or Australian artist James Peter Henry. This style is very trendy right now He uses mixed media, including graffiti spray, and combines different trends in his work - cubism, abstraction, pop art…
Imagine that you were approached by a novice art collector He wants to invest in contemporary art but doesn't know where to start He does not understand what will grow in price, and what has no prospects. Your recommendations?
First of all, I will ask what style or direction he likes the most What attracts him to art We know that there are investmentgrade artists, and there are emerging artists whose names are not so well known yet. If the client does not want to buy the piece of a famous master, I will not insist
After all, the most important thing is that the work of art pleases its owner. You have to live with it, and see it every day in your space Of course, it is important to advise the collector in terms of the art market For example, we have works by Picasso, and even Dali, whose provenance comes directly from the Argillet family. I would recommend Dali, first of all, because there are different styles in his work, and there is plenty to choose from There are also very worthy and promising contemporary artists It all depends on the relationship with the client, on his personality. It's very individual
As a rule, the collector reveals his true preferences only in a personal conversation.
Do you collect art yourself? Please tell me about your private collection. What are your favourite items, and what do they mean for you?
Yes, I also collect. For example, I have a work by Salvador Dali done in sepia. This is my favourite one. I also really enjoy supporting local emerging artists and buying their work By the way, I just love sketches I have several by Sir Daniel Winn in my collection.
I love pencil drawings Black and white You know, in general, I collect things that have some meaning for me, that are somehow connected with me, with a certain period of my life. There are a lot of collectors who see art as an investment, and buy something that is sure to increase in value, then to resell, or leave in the assets of their families, as a legacy to their descendants. I collect art on a different principle - emotional. I buy what excites me, and causes strong feelings
It is so unusual! You don't see that very often in our industry these days. According to your preferences, I realised that you like graphics more than painting
"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THE WORK OF ART PLEASES ITS OWNER"
I like sketches There is something sacred in the sketch, it captures the magic of the process It is much more attractive to me than the finished work. When it comes to painting, I prefer abstraction to figurative art Abstraction gives more emotion
Do
you paint yourself?
I prefer Visual Art I am a photo artist Now I feel a new surge of inspiration, and I am ready to study and master new techniques
Great! You are very versatile, and cover several areas in the industry at once - art sales, art collecting, and the creation of works Talking about the connection of eras - the past with the present. What would you prefer - the work of an old master, or of a modern one? For example, I started with antiques works, and my base is totally classics I will always prefer an old master.
As for me, I will not answer so unambiguously Rather, I like to watch the evolution - from the old to the modern Now I lean more towards contemporary art, because it includes new techniques and means of expression that traditional artists did not use And one more thing: from the old masters we got only the result, the finished work And I like to observe the process This is available to us only with contemporary art.
Talking about art-dealing What was the most expensive artwork that you had ever sold?
If you mean the separate piece, most expensive were the sculptures, at $700,000 each But the most expensive invoice for one client was for $1 600 000
That’s really impressive! I think that 90% of successful sales depends on art dealer. What does exactly help to to sell the art?
I think that my strength lies in the fact that I can always correctly describe any piece of art I know how to connect an artwork with a collector because I take the time to communicate with artists, study their method of creating a piece, and the idea that they wanted to transmit Then I present it as if I were the artist myself, and lived through the entire process of creation
Of course! The story sells
Besides, the client always wants to be guided, to be explained in a professional language not so much about the artist, but mostly about his work I can anticipate any collector's question and answer it competently. For people who manage such capitals, it is very important to be advised by a professional If I had just shrugged my shoulders in response, I would hardly have been able to sell anything I know the story behind every piece I sell so well, that I can spend hours talking about it to a client And then he is happy to buy, because if this work aroused such passion and emotions, then it deserves to be in his collection.
In addition, the collectors must feel that they are in good hands throughout the process This is what keeps them coming back and buying again
Good. I want to ask you something unusual. If you could be any piece of art, what would you be and why?
Good question! Wow I don’t even know what to say You know, my consciousness is always present in several places at one moment, I do a lot of things at the same time, I am constantly in the creative process I think I would be an abstraction
Abstraction can be different We can say that Malevich's "Black Square" is also an abstraction. But it seems to me that you are a painting with a lot of different bright colours.
(Laughs) I can definitely say that I am an unusual piece: something strange, but modern If you had asked me a few years ago, I would have answered without hesitation that I am an etching by Dali «Pieta» (1960), that I really like But that is already in the past I think that throughout your life, in different situations, you can feel like different works of art In general, art is more than a subject.
Totally agree I like this conversation, because you talk so exciting about your profession! But let's recap. What advice would you offer someone considering the career of an art acquisition specialist?
First of all, I would advise going into this profession without calculation Some people become an art dealer or gallery owner because they think it will make them a lot of money That is definitely true, but first of all, you need to feel passion and interest for what you are doing Especially in our field. You need to find some direction in art that will inspire you, and start studying it, understanding the industry, meeting people and, of course, trying to find a good mentor, as it happened in my case. It is very important to love what you do, to live it
I am also convinced that our industry cannot do without passion and love for art Let's light it all around!
QUANTUM ART
BY ANASTASIA OVSYANNIKOVAWhat is the art of the new generation? How can the Law of Attraction be applied through painting? How may contemporary art help in achieving goals, and in activating the energy of love and success?
I learned about this in an exclusive conversation with an artist from Eastern Europe, Anastasia Ovsyannikova, the founder of a new creative direction - Art with Intention. by Daria R.
Photocredit to Alexander Volk23 LAW OF ATTRACTION IN ART
I have been practicing the power of mind and the goals’ achieving through work with the subconscious for a long time As a rule, the result depends on regular practice and systematic implementation of certain exercises - meditations, positive affirmations, manifestations However, I never imagined that a work of art could also change the direction of life for the better, until I tried it myself Anastasia's paintings, in addition to being highquality works of contemporary art, have a special mission: to help people around the world achieve their positive goals, gain love, wealth and success What is the special gift of this artist?
By Daria RAnastasia, you are the founder of new art directionArt With Intention Could you explain, what is the meaning of your work?
Let's start with what Quantum Art is In short, it is a synthesis of art and science at the global level This is the vision of an innovative world by artists in full accordance with the latest discoveries in quantum physics and mechanics However, no one has ever mentioned that if you combine creative process and knowledge of how consciousness and subconsciousness work at the quantum level,
you can get a brand new kind of art that can not only decorate the interiors or walls of museums and galleries, but also change people's lives in the way that they "order" it themselves, to achieve their goals, to make them happy. That’s how appeared the idea of my new direction "Art With Intention" and a new style in contemporary art "Missionary Symbolic Graphics".
All this was described twice by the Academician, Honorary Art Worker of Europe, Professor Ginzburg G.N. And I own the copyright for all of this.
Sounds amazing! As I know, you were going to be a doctor. Why did you switched to art?
I have two degrees in Traditional and Ayurvedic Medicine, and several specialisations in this industry. Almost all of my life I have been studying how the human body functions, how our mind, psyche and spirit work. In addition to medicine and psychology, I studied various esoteric teachings. Two years ago, after a course of Erickson hypnosis, I suddenly started painting. Since then, it has become the main and favourite occupation of my life.
NEW ART DIRECTION: MISSIONARY SYMBOLIC GRAPHIC
For how long have you been practising with the Power of Mind? Tell us about your most interesting experience.
For the last fifteen years I have been studying the Power of the Mind and applying it in my life. I studied it from all angles - Medicine, Psychology, Esotericism, Physics, Mechanics. I have been learning a lot from the works by E P Blavatsky, John Kehoe and Dr Joe Dispenza
As a result, I combined all these knowledges, and now I can easily manage the events of my life. Sometimes I can reach my goal instantly, sometimes it can take days. It depends The fulfilment of bigger desires, of course, takes more time I want to say right away that only the true intentions of a person can be fulfilled And sometimes it takes time to understand what kind of intention is a true one.
How do your paintings help people in achieving their goals?
First principle: work with the deep levels of the subconscious through symbols and signs of different times and peoples
The second principle is based on the Taoist practice of the symbolic development of Feng Shui It says that the definition of a direction of the world is responsible for a certain energy and has its main elements and colours So in my work, I use the color principles of this teaching, to make my paintings work not only with the subconscious, but also with space, activating the necessary energy in it
And here we come to the third principle - the lines of energy For our consciousness all information is easier to assimilate and perceive linearly We've put everything on the line Time, distance, graphs, even electricity Keeping that in mind, I transmitted the energy into the lines drawn on the canvas
And, finally, the forth principlequantum interaction First of all, I mean the phenomenon of Quantum Entanglement, which states that two particles are connected and affect one another even if those particles are lightyears apart
In this case, the particles are me and my painting
The intention that I put into it. That is why I urge the art collectors to carefully choose the subjects of the work they buy, and the artist that created it. And that is why I paint only in a hyper positive state of my mind, with a very positive energy.
What is the message of your work, that you would like to convey?
I divided the message of my works into six categories, given that 6 is a sacred number that has the most powerful energy This is Love, Abundance, the Help of the Universe, Success, Harmony and Glory Everyone can choose what is currently in priority or work with several areas at once
Sounds amazing! Please, share some positive experience of your collectors who have bought your art Did it help them to reach their intentions and to improve the certain spheres of their lives?
My paintings with the Love Intention help to reach a new level in feelings, relationships, emotions Whether it's a new feelings or long- term relationships. And my paintings with the energy of success will help you succeed in your career. For example, I started my “Victory” series in 2020. The first work was purchased by one business lady. A few months later, she called me and said that she became very famous in her industry. Her income grew four times, and her career went uphill powerfully.
That’s impressive! I think, everyone who really loves art and wants to improve their life, should start collecting your paintings. By the way, what is your mission as an artist?
I have a global mission to make people on our planet happy, to help them achieve their goals, fulfil their dreams. After all, if I could do that, everyone can!

STREET ART
FROM THE STREETS TO THE ART
A new name in Miami Street Art, young and promising muralist Marthi, has almost 15 years of experience in graffiti Unlike many artists of this genre, his works do not express protest, but rather convey a life- affirming message of Love, Gratitude and Freedom
For sure, you have already met his funny and kind character on the streets of Miami, and now you can see it in the art galleries. About how to reach the hearts of millions, how to follow your dreams, and how street art can get into the gallery format, Marthi spoke in this interview
MY WORK CONVEYS A CLEAR MESSAGE OF LOVE, GRATITUDE AND FREEDOM
How did you start in street art? Tell us a little bit about your background
Despite the fact that I have been obsessed with drawing for as long as I can remember, I started in street art at the age of approximately 14. An art school never caught my attention but rather the graffiti that I saw in Caracas, and especially in Montalban, the area where I grew up. That’s why one day I decided to save some money and buy some sprays That’s where this passion began!
And where can we see your murals now?
Well, some of them must remain in Caracas, Venezuela, others in Nueva Esparta, the Island of Margarita, some in Mexico City, and now, of course, on the walls of Wynwood, Miami, which I’m especially proud of.
What is the message of your work?
My work conveys a clear message of Love, Gratitude and Freedom. These are the words that identify myself, and at the same time push me to create my art In other words, these are the words that I like to tag in my creation
Tell us a little bit about the character, that always shows up on your murals.
Marthi is the name of this character, who has the personality of a guardian angel, a spiritual guide, a cupid, a protector, a funny little angel that I like to represent in different situations of everyday life
Without a doubt, this character is highlighting my artistic side. But above all, he also saved my life.
I feel that I am totally prepared both artistically and spiritually to take my street art to the galleries. By the way, this year for the first time I’m participating in the art fairArt Wynwood 2023, with the Colour Senses Project, the gallery that I recently started working with From my early childhood I have had a life full of emotions, and today I feel that I have finally found my eternal peace
I would like that not only the people who pass by my murals can enjoy my art, but also to reach the eyes of the whole world through my sculptures, paintings and designs
Why did you decide to put your street art in the galleries?
What do you want to show people through your art?
II would like to show that the guardian angel who takes care of us and protect us will always be there accompanying us through our lives. People don’t see him in their lifetime, but at least they can feel him through my work.
That’s amazing! That is why your works have such a good energy What does inspire you to create them?
My inspiration is the story of my own life itself, and my art is the result of many mistakes that I have made, but, at the same time, of many lessons that I have learnt

ART & DESIGN SHAKHNABAT ALIMAGOMEDOVA
PAINTING THAT WAS BORN FROM ANCIENT CARPETS
The artistic way of this honoured international artist, distinguished representative of Dagestan culture, art curator, started when she was 3. At this age Shakhnabat adopted the hereditary family tradition of carpet weaving, and devoted her whole life to this painstaking occupation. How did that help make her artistic style so unique and authentic?
by Daria R.You are an internationally recognized artist. Has this always been your guideline?
In order to reach the international level and be recognized at international art venues, there are always certain prerequisites I felt more confident when my artistic style became more recognizable. And this happened when I introduced into my painting what I know best - the carpets
This is an ancient form of art filled with symbolism and color harmony All my knowledge about ancient symbols and color composition, which I gathered during the time of carpet weaving, I conveyed through my painting. When my work first came to a serious collector, and he appreciated it, I thought that my art should be recognized at the international level.
You have been painting for seven years. What prompted you to switch from the mastery of carpet art, to which you dedicated your life, to the canvas?
Painting has been my old dream, but there were always some obstacles When I gained more time and financial freedom, I just started creating what I wanted, without looking at anyone I never focused on the commercial part, did not create my work on order, did not think if it would be sold or not. Ironically, this approach has been the catalyst for my commercial success.
How do you manage to be a commercially successful artist?
Artist - Shakhnabad Alimagomedova.I am not trying to imitate anyone, but simply apply my skill and transfer its quality to painting Also I always enjoy the process and the result. As for the prices of my works, they were determined by art collectors
How did hereditary knowledge of the art of carpet weaving help you find your creative path?
This knowledge has always helped me in painting, because I focus primarily on my ethnicity, my people, my values.
Ancient
Carpet weaving is a highly skilled work that has many attendant moments - creating a yarn, dyeing with natural pigments, creating and scaling a pattern, matching the colours The machines on which carpets are woven are thousands of years old, and today the technologies of the carpet mastery have not changed.
All this knowledge helped make my painting more unique
What symbolism is contained in your works?
In my paintings I use the symbolism of the carpet art. Each carpet is a wish of happiness and prosperity to every home
Those symbols that are collected in the composition are arranged in a way to carry a positive message for the house All the symbols that I use have been carefully kept for thousands of years, and survived to these days
What did inspire you to be an artist?
My mom is an artist, and I had no other way in my life. This is what I have always dreamed of, and what I have absorbed since my childhood.
Unfortunately, my mom did not take place as an artist, but she did as a mother of ten children. When I moved from carpet weaving to painting, I saw so much joy in her face! She said that I am her continuation, and I will realize what she could not My mother still supports and inspires me in my creative career.
What advice would you give to emerging artists who want to be commercially successful?
Young artists are often in a hurry to sell their work as soon as possible, and miss the most important thingprofessional development, honing the skills, the formation of a unique concept and recognition of their work. Given all these components, the work in any case will be a commercial success And the laws of painting in any of its directions are always the same
Thank you for sharing your beautiful and unusual story!
by Daria R.OSCAR ESTEBAN MARTINEZ IS A COLOMBIAN ARTIST, A MASTER OF A PUBLIC SCULPTURE. HIS COMPLEX AND DEEP ART IS INSPIRED BY A HUMAN BEING AND ITS EXISTENCE.
BORN IN PASTO, COLOMBIA, OSCAR ESTEBAN STUDIED FINE ARTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF NARAÑO BEFORE SETTLING IN THE CITY OF CALI WHERE HE DEVELOPED HIS ARTISTIC CAREER, BEGINNING WITH SCULPTURE AND LATER WITH DRAWING AND PAINTING IN THIS INTERVIEW THE ARTIST SPOKE ABOUT THE MESSAGE OF HIS WORK AND ABOUT EMOTIONS AND THOUGHTS THAT IT IS CREATED TO PROVOKE
I know that you are a professional artist, real master, and dedicated all your life to this occupation. Why did you choose this industry?
Well, I was born in the South of Colombia, in the city of Pasto, and it is internationally known as a cradle of applied arts and crafts. Besides, my city is famous for its Blacks & Whites Carnival, which traditionally unites different nations and cultures From my early childhood, I was inspired by the images of Carnaval, its bright and impressive paper figures, and also by the sculptures that I have been always seeing in the church I was attracted by the volume, and three-dimensional forms.
When I grew up, I decided to study Arts, and entered the University I have graduated as a Master in Fine Arts with the specialisation in Sculpture. That’s how my art career started.
"MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION IS A HUMAN BEING"
What was your intention when you decided to be an artist? Was it prestigious profession in Colombia? Maybe you wanted to be famous internationally?
I chose a sculpture as my specialisation, because it can be public. You can put the sculpture in a public place, and a lot of people will see it I was always thinking that the volume, three-dimensional piece has much more influence than, for example, a painting. Public art and sculpture is more accessible than a painting exposed in the gallery, and it can be seen by a lot of people. And the message of this kind of art can reach masses I saw behind that a big power in communicating with people, and a possibility to make the society a little bit better.
What is your biggest inspiration in your work?
My biggest inspiration is a human being It is the most intelligent and perfect creature in our Universe We have reached a lot of good things, but we are also guilty for certain things My mission has always been to show people their important role in this world, and their responsibility.
In addition to being a sculptor, you are also a brilliant painter. I noticed that your painting also highlights a human being, a personality That’s why, I suppose, your favourite genre is a portrait. But it seems that both sculpture and painting transmit the same message What is it about?
That is true. My favourite subject is «Beliefs» This concept was inspired by one of my friends, who is a philosopher One day he mentioned that we have certain beliefs, and they can influence our destiny Unfortunately, in most cases, these are limiting beliefs, not those that inspire us, and give us a motivation When we are kids, we still can't filter the information, and we absorb everything that the society, school, parents or religious leaders teach us These beliefs limit our mind, and don’t let us progress Sometimes in my sculpture I use the image of the human being with the head of a lamb or a sheep. For me, it means, that when we blindly follow something, without analyzing or listening to our intuition, we become totally led, and similar to these characters.
That is really amazing concept! What message would you like to convey through your art?
I would like to invite the viewer to think and to question himself My work is very complicated, but interesting to analyse. It contains a lot of symbols, mythology and hidden meanings
What difficulties did you face during your path in art?
There are a lot of difficulties in the artistic career
For me, the most difficult were the limits that I faced in my country, because the art there is very traditional, and if you have a different vision or concept, it is not easy to be recognised That’s why I always wanted to show my art in others countries However, it was very difficult to travel with the big sculptures, and I started to paint, because this format is much more comfortable for transportation With my paintings I visited a lot of countries, and exposed them abroad I brought them to the United States, and started to collaborate with the galleries.
What advice would you give to yourself when you just started your artistic career?
I would advise to be passionate about what you are doing and to know exactly what you want. Each step will approach you to your intention, because even difficulties are the part of your path, if you know exactly where you are going
Your painting is really impressive. Do you still prefer a sculpture?
I was always inspired by volume and threedimensional art Concerning my painting, it is influenced by my sculpture. I love to convey texture, shape and volume in every detail That’s why it is so different and unique.
What is your biggest dream as an artist?
I would like to create a public sculpture and install it in a big city, as New York Also my dream is to be exposed in any important museum.
