LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to our latest edition of The Dumb Ox. We have been extremely busy since our last issue Throughout these pages you will have an opportunity to see some of the wonderful happenings that have been going on. As you read this we will be opening our newest buildings, The Janice Lemann Center for Visual Arts and The Steinmann Family Innovation Center. We look forward to highlighting these wonderful editions to the Aquinas campus in our next issue. As Aquinas continues to grow in our physical plant, our student body continues to increase as well. This fall we anticipate over 630 students roaming our beautifully landscaped grounds, which will be our largest enrollment in over 35 years!

As exciting as this time has been, it is always this time of year when we say goodbye to our Seniors, but say hello to our newest group of Alumni. Our recent graduates may be experiencing feelings of trepidation as they prepare to leave to study at some of the finest universities all of the world. However, it is important they all know that the entire Aquinas community is so proud of who they are and are confident in the fruitful individuals they will become.

As always, as Falcon Alumni and supporters of Aquinas we encourage you to stop by and pay us a visit This will give you an opportunity so see how we've changed, but to feel that same community support and love that makes Aquinas such a special place.

AQUINAS REUNIONS

The class of 1963 held its 60th reunion on April 21st and 22nd of this year in San Bernardino. Of the 63 graduates (all boys in those days), we have valid contact information for 28 guys, of which 17 attended (60%). Additionally, we had 5 wives, one daughter and 3 widows attend our events for a total of 26 attendees. All attendees received a name tag button to wear with an individual photo from the 1963 Summa yearbook Additionally, copies of 6 Falcon Newsletters from 1962 and 1963 were scanned and provided to all.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites of San Bernardino was our Headquarters hotel, and on Friday night many of us joined together to have dinner at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse for a convivial night of catching up and recalling war stories from 60 years ago.

On Saturday afternoon, Dr. Chris Barrows met all of us at the Performing Arts Center to give us a spirited update on the changes to the school over the past 60 years. Since our class had contributed $100K to the Performing Arts Center and had the Fr. J. Vincent Sullivan plaque installed in the lobby – we all felt a connection to the building. Dr. Barrows then led us on a lively tour of the campus facilities. We were all very impressed with the facilities and the learning technologies now in use; as well as the breadth of student activities and accomplishments. Dr. Barrows even made time to briefly attend our reception / buffet dinner held at the Arrowhead Country Club (ACC).

Our special thanks go to Christine D’Amico, wife of classmate Felix who died in 2015, who was most helpful in coordinating the food and meeting space for our events. The buffet dinner was prepared by Martina Macias of Martina Baja Catering, and all of us agreed it was the best food we’ve had in all of our previous reunions. Fariel and Michael Winn, owners of the ACC were very accommodating for our group and gave us a separate room for the reception and dinner. We are all looking forward to our 65th reunion in 2028.

For other classes that are interested in planning a reunion, contact the alumni relations office at Aquinas High School

NEW SPORT ON THE NEW SPORT ON THE NEW SPORT ON THE BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK

Introducing an exciting addition to the athletic landscape at Aquinas High School, the renowned educational institution has proudly unveiled its new sport - Girls Beach Volleyball. As the only high school in the surrounding area equipped with beach volleyball courts on their campus, the team had the unique advantage of playing all their games at home. This advantage proved to be a catalyst for their inaugural season success, as they finished an impressive 2nd in the league and secured a spot in the coveted CIF playoffs Guided by the expertise of Coach Mark Mina, the team exhibited exceptional talent and determination on the sandy courts. With the completion of a remarkable first season, Aquinas High School is now thrilled to witness the sport's growth and eagerly anticipates an even more triumphant season in the upcoming year. As the spirit of competition and teamwork continues to flourish, the school community is excited to witness the impact of Girls Beach Volleyball on the holistic development of its students.

BEYOND THE FIELD

Eric Bitonti, a senior at Aquinas High School, made history this year when he was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 3rd round of the MLB draft with the 87th overall pick. This marks the highest draft pick in Aquinas High School's history. The talented left-handed hitter drew attention from scouts with his impressive raw tools and power potential. Bitonti showed tremendous upside at just 17 years old He has a physical 6-foot-4 frame that should add more strength as he develops Scouts praise his plate discipline, ability to pick up spin, and untapped power potential that could make him an impact bat in the future While Bitonti played shortstop in high school, most project him moving to third base where his plus arm and athleticism could make him an above-average defender. His considerable offensive ceiling ultimately secured his place as an early round selection for the Brewers, who believe refined instruction will help Bitonti maximize his abilities. Bitonti's selection demonstrates the excellence of the Aquinas High School baseball program, which has now produced multiple draft picks This outstanding achievement caps off Bitonti's accomplished high school career on a high note as he now embarks on his professional baseball journey with Milwaukee

Congratulations to the 15 outstanding Aquinas athletes who have earned athletic scholarships to continue playing in college! Their hard work, dedication, and exceptional talent have paid off, and this incredible achievement is a testament to their commitment to excellence on and off the field Their skills and passion for sports have set them apart, and we have no doubt that they will continue to shine brightly at the collegiate level. The Aquinas community is incredibly proud of each and every one of them As they embark on this exciting new chapter, may they continue to inspire and make their mark in the world of collegiate athletics. Best of luck in their future endeavors! Go Aquinas!

Aquinas has been the beginning of several love stories over the years. This past Valentines Day a few these couples shared their Aquinas

Love Story

John and Kim Hunsaker '89

Johnny and I met at Aquinas and have been together since 1988 - our junior Prom! Before the Prom, we were study partners on opposing sides of a class debate topic as well. I used to leave my English book at home on purpose so we would have to share books in class. We were also on the Track team together. We said, "I Do" in 1997 and have two amazing sons: Ethan, age 21, and Riley, age 18. Truly Blessed!!

George '03 and Janae '04 Anagnostopoulos

George and I met through our friends when I was in 8th grade and he was a freshman at Aquinas. We dated all through high school and college. We got married in 2010 after dating for 10 years!! We have been married for 12 years and together for 22 years! We have two amazing twin boys who are 9, a beautiful daughter who is 5 and another daughter due in June! Aquinas has always been a huge part of our love story. We are still very much apart of Aquinas with George coaching football.

Kevin and Stephanie Wenclewicz '10

Stephanie and I met our freshmen year at Aquinas; we had five classes together. The short version of our story is that she asked me to the Sadie Hawkins dance our freshmen year and I said yes. A couple weeks later there was a group of our friends who went to the movies (and of course rigged it so that we sat next to each other). At the end of the movie I asked her to be my girlfriend, she said yes, and we've been dating ever since! It's been a little over 16 years now, and we have been married since June 2018. We live in San Diego where I work as a high school math teacher and Stephanie works as an occupational therapist. Thank you, and go Falcons!

Eliseo and Diana Ruiz '72

Eliseo and I met in third grade at St. Anne’s, which is now Our Lady of Hope. I guess we connected then because Elly says he had a crush on me all through grade school... even when I had buck teeth. Elly is a nickname that was given to him by another elementary school friend. Elly started working during summers when he was 14 to help fund his tuition at Aquinas so that he could stay with his friends from St. Anne’s, many of whom he had played city league sports with as well. Back then, Aquinas was an all-boys school, and being smaller, it provided more opportunities to play sports. He played basketball and football. I attended St. Bernardine’s, the girls’ high school, so we rarely saw the boys that we had grown up with at St. Anne’s. Elly and I attended the football homecoming dance together during ninth grade, but it was a disaster. 1971-1972 brought the guys and gals together when the two schools combined at the Aquinas site. Elly and I spent most of our senior year doing fun things together. We discovered that we shared many of the same values, experiences, and interests, including foreign countr and languages. By then, Elly was the quarterback, and I w a cheerleader. We fell crazy in love. However, the following year would take me away to college and Elly away to Switzerland as an exchange student, so the relationship pre much came to a halt. In those days, it was difficult to communicate; there were no personal computers or the internet. Phone calls to Europe were very expensive, so we could only write letters. Miraculously we eventually reunit married at 22, finished college, and went on to raise two amazing sons. Many years after we were married, it occurr to us that we had walked down the aisle together for first communion, confirmation, and high school graduation. We wondered if the Immaculate Heart nuns and Father O’Tool had been trying to match us up from the start. The Class of ’72, the first co-ed graduating class continued to hold reunions about every five years. We celebrated our 50th H School reunion last fall and were able to reconnect with the majority of our classmates. It was a heartwarming experience, and many commented about how fortunate we all were to attend Aquinas High School.

Adrian Gonzalez and Traci Brody '82

LOVE from class of 1982 This is a true story of two alumni Falcons. My name is Adrian Gonzales. I graduated class of 1982. I have been happily married to Traci ( Dittenhaver) Brody , a fellow class mate of 1982 . Although we did graduate the same year from Aquinas , we never really knew each other . When we were in high school, we had several common friends . In 2002 , Traci was involved in reaching out to the class mates of ‘82, for a twenty year reunion. Traci’s mother Pat was a good friend of my mother at the time prior to this 20 year reunion event . I was told by my mom that her friend had a daughter that was planning this high school reunion for our class. It was at that event , in Indian Wells in June of 2002 that fate would take over both our lives. I immediately fell in love with Traci. She was, and still is very compassionate and genuinely caring. We met on that Saturday night of that weekend, and we are still together today . Our love and command faith in God has kept us strong, together to greet life’s tough challenges. We’ve experienced change of careers, growth of children into adults , death of parents , and becoming grandparents. I never would have thought my beautiful and loving spouse was at the same high school, in the same graduating class, but I do thank God that He was brought us together. We are blessed

Cesar and Anika Navarro '13

We started dating the summer going into senior year and have been together almost 11 years and married almost 4 years. It’s fun to remember and think about how we met and the fun memories we have made together beginning at Aquinas. We have two beautiful baby girls our oldest is 18 months and our second is 3 months.

Jim and I met the summer before I went into high school at Aquinas! Since my sister was dating his cousin, our paths were bound to cross. He was the captain of the football team and I was the captain of the cheer squad. We started dating my sophomore year and his junior year, and we instantly fell in love! Jim got a Division 1 football scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso and I went on to college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where we had a long distance relationship for about 5years. Once we both graduated we moved back to our hometowns and it was so amazing to be in the same place again. Jim is now a San Bernardino County Sheriff and I am a Speech Language Pathologist. Jim also used to coach for the football team and we love to go and support the amazing program! We also have our little boy, Cooper, who we love more than anything. We can’t wait for him to be a future falcon and to add more little falcons to our family. Oh and of course have to mention our two miniature schnauzers, Blue and Pooka, who make our family complete! Thank you Aquinas for helping me meet the love of my life! We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next!

John '00 and Lauron '03 Steinmann

I was a freshman and John was a senior. John was always my senior crush. His argyle socks, bike chain wallet, pumas...I loved it all! His mom was my cheer coach and I remember our first date...at cheer practice I was so excited to tell her we were going on a date. Before we even dated I wrote in his sisters yearbook that I would marry her brother. Well that first date lead to 5.5 years of dating and now almost 21 years later we are married with two beautiful boys and coming on our 15 year wedding anniversary! Aquinas holds so many memories in our hearts. I’m most grateful for meeting my husband there, having Aquinas as such a memorable and positive experience, and leaving there with the faith that brought us together.

Mickey '74 and Julie '75 Donlon

This is Julie Fitzgerald Donlon. My husband and I went to Aquinas in the 1970's. Here's our love story: Back in 1972, 2 days before school started for my sophomore year at Aquinas, my BFF, Patti McCready, and I went shopping at the auction in Colton. With our new school clothes in our shopping bags, we headed across the 4 lane street to where Patti's mom was waiting to pick us up. We only got to the middle of the street when a car struck us. The ambulance took us to St. Bernardine's Hospital. Unbeknownst to me, while this was happening, Mickey Donlon was planning to ask me out on what would have been our first date that day. He tried calling my house several times, but no one was there to answer. He called Patti's house until he finally got in touch with Patti's dad who told him we were in the hospital. He came to visit me that first night, and kept coming day after day for the whole month I was there. Needless to say, he had a captive audience. I couldn't go anywhere. So our love affair started then and is still going strong all these years later. We've grown up together. We dated all through high school and got married about a year after I graduated. We have 4 amazing children who all have incredible spouses. We have 4 grandchildren (so far) who are the most adorable and precious people on earth. And they love their Amma and Papa. We are blessed with so much love in our family. In a few days, we will be celebrating our 46th anniversary (WHAT?!!!) When people ask us how we met, we just tell them, "by accident."

Paul and Suzanne Dainko ''87

During our four years at Aquinas we were falcons passing in the quad, sharing classes on occasion, the BMOC and the wall flower. Fast forward 16 years later, the Holy Spirit used a diocesan ministry formation day at St. George, Ontario to bring us back together. Eighteen months later, we were married and now have three secondgeneration falcons in the family, Classes of 2025, 2027, & 2029.

Michael and Lisa Beckley '91

Mike and I met when we were Freshmen at Aquinas. We were both 14. We hung around different friend groups the first 2 years but started becoming close friends Junior year. Mike was (and still is) a friend to everyone. He’s kind and thoughtful but most importantly has a great sense of humor. He can make me laugh and that’s what I love about him the most. He asked me to the Prom our Junior year. We went as friends and had a blast! We had a few classes together and would talk a lot. Our senior year we talked quite a bit more and would joke in the hallways between classes and attend each other’s games when we could. He played soccer and I played basketball. We were still only just friends. When it came time for Senior Prom, we ended up going together again. This time however, it was a little different. Our friendship started growing and after graduation we started dating. We dated 8 years before we got married. We went to different colleges and even lived in different countries. He studied glassblowing in England and I was in Dental School in San Francisco. We never broke up and told ourselves if it was meant to be, it was meant to be. We have been married for 24 years. We have 3 daughters, our oldest daughter Lauren is a Junior in College at Missouri State University and graduated from Aquinas in 2020. Our middle daughter Claire is a Senior at Aquinas and our youngest daughter Audrey is a Junior. Mike has returned to Aquinas to teach Ceramics and has been teaching there for 4 years. Our lives have completely come full circle at Aquinas High School and we are blessed to be a part of the Falcon famil

David '98 and Sarah '00

Our story starts with a simple smile! He was walking up to the locker room after football practice and I was on my way to visit my father (Mark Robert)...who was part of the football coaching staff at Aquinas. It would be several months before he actually worked up the nerve to ask me on a date, but I knew from that first smile this was going to be something amazing! We started dating in December 1996 and we married in August 2006. In between we both graduated from college (Sonoma State University & University of San Diego), Dave graduated from University California Hastings School of Law and passed the Bar Exam! We had our son, future falcon Jackson Colella, in April 2009! We both believe that Catholic school education has contributed to the success we have experienced in both our personal and professional lives. We will forever be thankful for our time at Aquinas! GO FALCONS!!

Celebrating 5 Years of Artistic

Brilliance: The San Manuel Performing Arts Center at Aquinas High School

The San Manuel Performing Arts Center at Aquinas High School is all set to commemorate its 5th-year anniversary, marking half a decade of nurturing creativity, talent, and passion for the performing arts among the students and the community. Since its inception in 2018, this 17,000square-foot, 336-seat center has been a beacon of artistic brilliance, providing an invaluable platform for aspiring performers to shine and for the community to revel in the magic of the arts.

The journey of the San Manuel Performing Arts Center started with a transformative gift of $3 million from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the J.F. Shea Company, Shea Family Charities, and 200 individual donors, including enthusiastic alumni of Aquinas High School. This generous donation made the dream of a state-of-the-art performing arts center a reality.

One of the primary objectives behind the establishment of the center was to provide students with a passion for the arts an opportunity to grow, develop, and gain confidence It aimed to break the stereotype that only athletes or scholars could flourish and prove that the performing arts are equally essential for self-development and community vitality. The center aimed to bring together like-minded students, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among aspiring performers

Over the past five years, the San Manuel Performing Arts Center has witnessed remarkable growth and achieved numerous milestones Packed house productions of timeless classics such as "The Little Mermaid," "A Christmas Carol," "Little Women," "The Wizard of Oz," "Seussical," and many others have left audiences captivated and spellbound. Students have demonstrated their exceptional talents in various performing arts showcases, showcasing their skills in drama, painting, saxophone, and even break dancing just to name a few.

Notable among the center's accomplishments is the Performing Arts Scholarship, made possible by an endowment from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Since it's establishment, this scholarship has paved the way for eight deserving students to attend Aquinas High School and become part of the esteemed Performing Arts Academy. These talented scholars have brought diverse talents to the fore, illustrating the power of the arts in transforming lives.

The San Manuel Performing Arts Center has not only enriched the local community but has also opened doors to the world stage This past Winter, The Performing Arts Academy and the choir had the incredible opportunity to travel to Rome and perform during Mass at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. This once-in-a-lifetime experience left an indelible mark on the students, and their voices resonated through the hallowed halls of one of the world's most iconic religious sites.

Additionally, the performing arts students were able to travel to New York City in 2020 on a "Spotlight on the Arts" educational tour. This enriching trip exposed the students to the vibrant arts scene of the city, immersing them in Broadway shows, museums, and workshops, further igniting their passion for the performing arts

The impact of the San Manuel Performing Arts Center extends beyond its walls Since its establishment, the center has witnessed an exponential rise in student interest in the arts. Participation in drama productions, backstage crew, choir, and band has soared, proving that the center has inspired a newfound passion for the performing arts among the student body.

The spirit of collaboration is one of the cornerstones of the San Manuel Performing Arts Center's success Aquinas High School joined forces with Junior University Musical Theater, a group that has been entertaining the Inland Empire with family productions for over five decades. Together, they brought spectacular productions like "A Christmas Carol" and the recent "Cinderella" to life at the San Manuel Performing Arts Center.

As the San Manuel Performing Arts Center marks its 5th-year anniversary, it stands as a testament to the power of the arts in transforming lives and fostering creativity. With unwavering support from the community, donors, and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the center continues to nurture artistic brilliance and empower students to chase their dreams fearlessly.

Here's to the past five years of exceptional performances and unforgettable moments at the San Manuel Performing Arts Center, and to a future filled with even more artistic magic and triumphs!

A AFAMILY AFAMILY FAMILY

AFFAIR AFFAIR AFFAIR

Throughout history, there have been many famous musical families like the Von Trapp family singers and television's Partridge Family. Now Aquinas High School has its own talented musical clan with the Estrella siblings - Chris, Khiarra, Khaeryst, and Xander. Nurtured musically and spiritually by their parents,Deacon Edwin and Kathleen, the Estrellas have cultivated their musical gifts from a young age This year, for the first time, these passionate musicians will bring their talents together at Aquinas But the Estrellas hope to contribute more than just music to the Aquinas community. With their dedication to faith and family, they aim to positively impact students spiritually and build community on campus. Just like other legendary musical families, the Estrella siblings exemplify how a love of music and shared values can connect and inspire.

The Estrella Family Brings Faith, Music, and Family Ties to Aquinas

This year is shaping up to be an Estrella family affair at Aquinas High School Siblings Chris, Khiarra, Khaeryst, and Xander Estrella will all be on campus together, bringing their close family bonds, musical talents, and dedication to faith to the Aquinas community.

Eldest brother Chris Estrella, class of 2006, first stepped foot on the Aquinas campus over 15 years ago He has fond memories of Aquinas traditions like the lively Holy War pep rally against Notre Dame where his principal furiously ripped up an opposing team jacket. Chris returned to Aquinas as an adult to take on the facilities manager role at the Rezek Center. He is currently working on his Master’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Santa Clara University, With two decades of musical experience under his belt as a conductor, composer and multi-instrumentalist, he hopes to see his compositions published in national hymnals in the coming years. Chris has served as a faith speaker and worship leader for Oregon Catholic Press, taking him to events like World Youth Day His proudest accomplishment is being signed as an OCP artist.

Sister Khiarra Estrella, class of 2011, walked the same halls as her big brother a few years later For Khiarra, the Kairos retreat was a highlight of her high school experience. She went on to earn dual Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Biochemistry from CSUSB in 2016, followed by a Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2020 She returned to Aquinas in 2020 as a teacher in the science department and member of the campus ministry team. This year she will be teaching physics and AP physics. She is ready to inspire students in the classroom just as she was inspired. Outside the classroom, she looks forward to spending time with her new baby joining the family this October

Now in 2023 youngest brother Xander Estrella arrives at Aquinas as a freshman ready to make his own memories. As a hopeful football player and musical theater performer, Xander plans to get the most out of high school He looks forward to meeting new people and learning from his siblings around campus. He will also be in the engineering academy and wants to have a positive impact on as many people as possible Xander is both excited and nervous to start this new chapter He knows he will have to balance academics, sports, theater, and a social life. Some days will be more challenging than others. But he is ready to work hard and make the most of all the opportunities Aquinas has to offer Xander hopes to follow in his siblings' footsteps and leave his own positive mark on the school. With his natural charisma and talent, he is sure to thrive during his time as a Falcon.

The next Estrella sibling, Khaeryst, graduated Aquinas in 2018 as the valedictorian of her class She fondly remembers highlights like Homecoming week festivities and starring as Belle in the school musical Beauty and the Beast. Khaeryst earned a B.A. in English from UCLA in just 3 years. She then completed a Master's degree in Urban Education from Loyola Marymount University. As an English and ethics teacher this year, Khaeryst aims to share the beauty of faith and guide students on their spiritual journeys She would tell students to get involved in school activities and always think for themselves.

Though busy with work and school, the Estrellas still make time for family fun like backyard barbecues, birthdays, and singing karaoke together. Even with their age gaps, their passion for music has always brought them together. Nurtured by their musical mother Kathleen, each child developed their talents singing, playing instruments, and serving at church They hope to share this love of music and faith with the Aquinas community. The Estrella siblings credit their mother Kathleen, a professional liturgical musician, for instilling in them a deep love and appreciation for music from a very young age. Kathleen serves as the Director of Music at their home parish and has worked as a music director for diocesan liturgies for over 20 years Through her guidance, the Estrella children learned to sing and play instruments, developing their musical gifts in service of the church. Each sibling has unique talentsKhaeryst enjoys singing and playing percussion like the djembe and congas. Chris is a skilled singer, speaker, conductor, composer and multi-instrumentalist Khiarra sings beautifully and plays the flute. Xander, the youngest, sings and plays guitar, percussion, bass guitar, ukulele, piano, steel drum and more. During quarantine, his passion for music really took off as he taught himself several instruments. With such devoted mentoring from their mother, it's no wonder music flows through the Estrellas' veins, binding them together as a family.

Having all four Estrella siblings on the Aquinas campus at the same time will be a unique and special experience for the tight-knit family. Due to their wide age gaps, they have never all attended school together before.

Khaeryst feels it will be surreal but exciting to have all her siblings in one place, since she only briefly overlapped with Khiarra in grade school. While the Estrellas spend much time together outside school, being on campus will allow them to connect in new ways, while still maintaining professionalism Chris hopes Xander can fully enjoy high school, even with his older siblings around Khiarra is thrilled to finally share a school with her siblings after years apart. As the youngest, Xander never imagined all four would be on campus simultaneously. But he looks forward to growing even closer to his brothers and sisters through this shared daily experience. Though their age differences are great, their bond is strong. Sharing the campus will allow the Estrellas to make new memories while deepening their lifelong sibling bond.

The Estrellas agree that the supportive Aquinas environment feels like family. Khaeryst believes "once you're a Falcon, always a Falcon." As the new school year starts, this faith-filled musical family will continue their Aquinas legacy - together.

: How BTS Helped an Alum Embrace Her Changemaking Calling

When Rina Dakanay '02 arrived at Aquinas High School as a freshman, she was driven to succeed As the eldest daughter of Filipino immigrants, Rina felt pressure to excel academically and pave the way for her younger brothers. She served as valedictorian, student body president and earned accolades in academics and basketball.

Rina continued her high-achieving path at UC Irvine, graduating in 2006 with a degree in Biological Sciences. She planned to attend medical school, but a friend invited her to help with social media for a marketing campaign in 2008. Rina realized her passion for digital storytelling and pivoted her career plans. She landed marketing roles at biotech and tech companies just as social media was emerging. "It was the early days of platforms like Facebook and YouTube. I saw so much potential to shape narratives and connect with people," Rina explains.

In 2016, Rina completed her MBA at the University of Redlands By then, she had become fascinated by K-pop group BTS and their savvy social media presence. "I was drawn in by their music and messages about self-love. But as a digital marketer, I was amazed by how they mobilized their global fanbase."

Rina brought these digital media skills to become an instructor at the San Bernardino Art Institute She also leads marketing at Claremont Lincoln University, increasing enrollment 250% in one year. Her team won the American Marketing Association's national higher ed award.

Rina is currently pursuing her doctorate at American College of Education, researching instructors' use of social media and fandoms for teaching. She presented her work at a BTS conference in Seoul, where she met a South African non-profit empowering young women.

At the 3rd Interdisciplinary BTS Conference in Seoul, Rina presented her doctoral research on instructors' use of social media and fandoms in higher education. This conference brought together scholars and fans studying the global impact of the K-pop group.

It was here that Rina met Jessica Duherst, CEO of the Justice Desk nonprofit in South Africa They quickly bonded over their shared passion for both BTS and empowering women and girls.

Jessica founded the Justice Desk's Mbokodo Project, which supports young female survivors of gender-based violence in South Africa with workshops, counseling and self-defense training.

As Rina learned more about the Mbokodo Project, she saw an opportunity to connect it with the powerful BTS fandom. She proposed developing a Big Sister Project to pair Army members with Mbokodo girls in a sponsorship program.

Jessica loved the idea, and together they launched the Big Sister Project on social media. Within months, ARMY members sponsored over 10 Mbokodo girls. This sponsorship funded travel for the girls to attend the 18th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in South Korea as the first African delegation.

At the Summit, the Mbokodo girls presented to world leaders about their work teaching human rights and empowering young activists Their presentation was widely shared across BTS fandom networks, amplifying the Mbokodo Project's impact.

The Big Sister Project demonstrated how Rina leveraged her understanding of social media and fandoms to drive realworld change. By bringing together the BTS ARMY and the Justice Desk, she created an innovative collaboration that uplifted young women activists globally.

Rina continues to grow in her marketing career, while working toward completing her Ed D this fall In her spare time, Rina remains dedicated to the Big Sister Project, which continues to sponsor the Mbokodo girls.

Outside of her career, Rina is dedicated to community service. She serves on the board of the Youth Action Project, empowering youth in San Bernardino

Rina was also a 6-year board member for the San Bernardino Library Foundation, supporting public libraries.

Most recently, she joined the advisory council for the Center Against Racism and Trauma. She assists their work in training youth in anti-racism strategies.

Through these volunteer roles, Rina is giving back to the community that raised her. She's especially passionate about supporting youth of color and promoting anti-racism

Rina's purpose-driven ethos shines through both her career achievements and community leadership. She is committed to lifting up young people most in need - from San Bernardino to South Africa.

Rina's journey shows how an immigrant daughter's perseverance and an unexpected boy band created ripples of change across continents. She's a testament to following one's purpose - wherever it may lead.
