Dancing with Sonia

Our Culture, Our Own Dancing with Sonia

Dancing for as long as she can remember, is Sonia Hercules, a senior logistics clerk here at AMDI for over three years. Sonia has been actively involved in Mashraman annually as a back-up dancer. She has supported artistes such as Jumo Primo, Lil Red, Vintage, Akeem Alexander, and OKC. This year, she was able to grace the stage with OKC in both chutney and soca monarch competitions. According performing for him (OKC) hing but incredible.”

“I will continue to support him and any other artist that would require me to be a part of their performance,” says the talented dancer.

Our Culture, Our Own Dancing with Sonia

How long have you been a dancer?

It all began in nursery school, where I first discovered my passion for dancing while participating in the Mashramani competitions. And guess what? I've carried this love for dancing with me throughout my entire school life. From nursery all the way to high school and even now, as I'm now a part of the world of work. It's been such an incredible journey, filled with countless amazing experiences and unforgettable moments.

Why do you like dancing?

I absolutely love dancing! It brings me so much joy and happiness. But you know what? It's not just about having a good time on the dance floor. Dancing has actually taught me some really important life lessons. It's all about discipline, perseverance, and working together as a team. It's amazing how much you can learn from something you're passionate about.

CPL 2019 Mashramani 2022

Our Culture, Our Own Dancing with Sonia

Describe how you felt performing for the first time at a national event

The first national event I had the opportunity to experience was Carifesta, when it was last held in Guyana. I believe that was in 2008 and I was 12 years old at that time. This experience was truly unforgettable and holds a special place in my heart. It gave me the chance to do what I am passionate about and also connect with other amazing individuals. Also, between 2017 and 2019, I was given the chance to be involved in CPLT20 Cricket, as a cheerleader. This was a remarkable experience that will forever hold significance in my life, as I had the privilege of not only observing the games but also dancing and providing encouragement to my team

Do you think dancing helps with stress/anxiety?

Absolutely. By dancing, I can focus on the present moment and let go of any worries or stress. It provides me an escape and allows me to experience the moment where it's only me against the entire world. In those moments, I feel completely in tune with my body and the music. The rhythm takes over and all my worries fade away. It's like stepping into a different dimension, where everything else becomes irrelevant. When I dance, nothing else I have ever experienced compares to the energy and passion that courses through me.

This intricately crafted hat, is our version of the embodiment of a "Bright Sunny Easter". The vibrant colours deliberately and precisely placed throughout the hat, depicts the unity, oneness and cohesion of each unique colour, much like our dear beautiful land.

The bunnies, eggs and roses all work together to give the feeling of warmth, freshness and new life. But, we must not forget the reason for this season. The death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. The one who gives real, life, warmth and newness.
