Build, purge or merge? A few options to combat falling revenue amid COVID-19
As the spread of COVID-19 gained momentum around the world, companies spent about US$15 billion extra per week on technology, including tech to make working from home safe and secure, finds the world’s largest technology leadership survey from Harvey Nash and KPMG. This marks one of the biggest surges in technology investment in history, with the world’s IT leaders spending more than their annual budget rise in just three months as the pandemic hit and lockdowns commenced.
adoption of emerging technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), blockchain and automation. Some of those technologies may have already come to a print plant near you. According to the survey, small-scale implementation of AI and ML have climbed from 21 per cent before the pandemic to 24 per cent during the pandemic, which is significant because this shift occurred over the period of just a few months.

40% of IT leaders reported their company had experienced more cyber-attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey, which is in its 22nd year, is the largest IT leadership survey in the world. The survey received responses from over 4,200 CIOs and technology leaders from 108 countries over two pulses – one prior to the pandemic, which took place in December 2019, and one during the pandemic, which spanned from June 5 to August 10, 2020.
Despite the large amount of spending on technology, especially security and privacy, four in 10 IT leaders reported their company had experienced more cyber-attacks, especially in the form of phishing (83 per cent) and malware (62 per cent).
Meanwhile, the survey found that organizations have struggled to find skilled cyber security professionals to support the movement towards working from home, as cyber security is now the most in-demand (35 per cent) technology skill in the world. This marks the first time a security related skill has topped the list of in-demand technology skills for over a decade.
While tech spending is up amid the pandemic, this level of spending is seen as unsustainable as tech budgets will be under more strain into the next year. Prior to COVID-19, 51 per cent of IT leaders expected a budget increase in the next year, but the pandemic saw that number drop to 43 per cent.
After investment in security and privacy, which accounted for 47 per cent of technology investments amid the COVID-19 pandemic, investment in infrastructure and the cloud was the third most important tech investment during the pandemic.
According to the survey, workforce enablement in the form of operational efficiency and customer engagement are among the top three priorities to board leaders amid COVID-19, driven by the mass move to remote working.
The survey found that for 47 per cent of IT leaders, the pandemic has permanently accelerated digital transformation and
Technology leaders are also expected to see their influence rising. According to the survey, almost two thirds (61 per cent) stated that the pandemic has permanently increased the influence of the technology leader. However, board membership is trending down, falling from 65 per cent in 2018 to 61 per cent of CIOs, IT directors and CDOs on the main board, suggesting tech leaders are finding ways to be relevant and influential without the need for permanent board membership.
Finding technological solutions to problems is no stranger to those of us in the print industry. That’s why PrintAction is launching the Champions of Print Awards, to recognize individuals or companies that have made a significant contribution to their community or used innovation to meet community or Canadian needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes anything from shifting over production to social distancing signage or critical PPE, to creating resources for other businesses to help them get through this difficult time. To nominate an individual or company as a Champion of Print, please visit printaction.com/championsof-print/.
Speaking of technology, this issue, we looked at Jones Soda’s labels that feature QR codes to help register new voters for the U.S. election – a pretty nifty way to use a label, in my opinion (p. 38). This issue also features an article from Scott Gray of Mitchell Press, providing guidance on how to take advantage of direct mail to guide your client’s message to market (p. 14), and an article from Ian Lifshitz on making the circular economy a reality through sustainable investment and partnerships (p. 8).
Until next time, stay well.

S.E.N.C. has been convicted and fined $65,000 in provincial offences court following a worker injury that occurred at a printing press/manufacturing facility located at 138 East Drive, in Brampton, Ont., on Aug. 28, 2018.
On this date, a worker suffered “critical injuries from being pulled into machinery that should have been locked out. The company
failed to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker in relation to safely locking out a drive shaft on a press machine.”
At the time, the Ministry of Labour investigated the incident and determined that the injured worker had not been trained on the hazards associated with not safely locking out the press machine. In addition, only maintenance personnel were provided with locks to ensure controls are locked out.
The investigation also found that press workers commonly troubleshooted problems with the printing presses without locking out the controls. It was left to the workers’ discretion as to whether to troubleshoot a problem or call maintenance. Had the drive shaft been locked out, with the power dispersed and the controls locked to prevent starting, the injured worker would not have been able to start the drive shaft.
The company was found to have violated section 25(2)(a) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act by failing to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker in relation to safely locking out a drive shaft on a press machine.

Think about the last item you purchased and threw away; did you consider where said product would end up once it went in the trash?
In our age of mass consumption, we are producing waste at alarming rates, but this trend is changing –consumer desire is radically shifting to more sustainable practices. Consumers more than ever are vocalizing how they expect the companies they engage with, including the brands they patronize, to collaborate and provide products and services that help promote an eco-friendly way of life and contribute to the circular

economy.
When considering a sustainable path forward, organizations and decision-makers would be remiss not to consider the role suppliers play driving sustainable production. Ultimately, the supply chain economy is part of one interconnected ecosystem, where end products have longer lifespans and the ability to re-enter the cycle for reuse. With this in mind, sustainable supply chain development requires a holistic strategy to achieve results.
Many companies are working to blend the circular economy with the bio economy to ensure that a sustainable closed system forms as the

cornerstone of their operations. The combined approach examines how a sustainable product process can leverage compostable and recycled materials, resulting in less waste production and smarter use of renewable materials. Alignment with the circular bio-economy encourages industrial symbiosis and a clear move away from the take-makewaste approach to manufacturing. It means finding opportunities to change how we do things while maintaining the benefits we derive from ecosystems.
Supporting a green supply chain from start to finish can make a big difference in developing sustainability initiatives. Green supply chains must support a global industry with responsible business practices by protecting forests, peatlands and biodiversity, and working in harmony with local communities.
Companies across the globe have undertaken this new consumer demand, radically transforming their business practices to become industry leaders in their respective fields.

From the implementation of satellite technology to track logging operations to the development of new packaging systems not reliant upon harmful plastics, companies are now more than ever heeding the call to action. Businesses are always looking into innovations that could play an integral role in the sustainability mandates.
For example, since 2016, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) has been in a strategic partnership with MDA, a Canadian company that forefronts such an innovation. MDA’s aim is to help businesses leverage technology to provide transparency and customer assurance that their products are produced sustainably right from the forest level, the first part of the circular economy.

servation areas through its Forest Alert Service (FAS), which could stem from planned jobs, natural loss stemming from disasters and illegal encroachment on conservation land.
Industries across the board are also looking for ways to directly reduce their carbon footprints. From reducing their water usage to cutting their actual greenhouse gas emissions, companies are moving in the right direction. The pulp and paper industry has seen such changes over the past 10 years. For example, from 2013 to 2018, APP reduced its water consumption rate by 24 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions by 18 per cent. Companies are also investing vast resources to ensure their power consumption comes from renewable energy sources, some even going as far as using their own by-products as fuel itself. APP uses by-products including palm shell, biogas and sludge waste, and through implementing such practices, has been able to shift 54 per cent of its energy consumption to renewable sources.
The takeout industry has been exponentially growing over the past 10 years and with it, has created a substantial issue of waste. With more food deliveries comes more packaging and the need to ensure that businesses and consumers are able to get serviced with sustainable options. As
consumer demand for sustainable products continues to rise, businesses are adapting their supply chains and processes to ensure that they provide sustainable, recyclable and fully compostable solutions. Responding to this increase in demand, APP developed the Bio Natura Foopak line of products, replacing plastic and foam packaging with a fully sustainable and compostable product made from light-weight virgin paper alternatives. Innovations like this allows the food industry to continue to meet demand while appeasing consumer demand for sustainability. In order for the circular economy to become the new business norm, both sustainable investment and partnerships are unilaterally needed.
Ian Lifshitz is Vice President of Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations at Asia Pulp & Paper Canada, which recently won the Sustainability Product of the Year award for its Foopak Bio Natura line of food packaging products. The primary goal with these products was to replace plastic foam and PE-coated food packaging with a fully compostable and sustainable paperboard alternative, specifically designed for converting both hot and cold beverage cups and other food packaging.

By Nick Howard
As a kid, I found attending church dull, other than one particular Thanksgiving Sunday service observing a mouse ravaging a display of gourds, corn and pumpkins while our Pastor bellowed away. Besides sheer boredom, I often recall a great deal of clergy finger-pointing with dire warnings of eternal damnation. Hey! I was just a kid, innocent to the world’s darker side; let me grow up first. I never grasped why preachers often showed antipathy towards the congregation. Still, there were two principles I credit to church-going: don’t lie and don’t steal. Perhaps I was not alone, as decades later, I learned of another kid with a similar experience over a century earlier.
Fresh off the boat, a young Scottish lad named John Thomson soon found himself nailed to a pew at the Marion Presbyterian Church just east of Rochester, New York. The Thomson family, newly emigrated from Foonabers, Scotland, sought a new life and more significant opportunities. From 1866 to 1869, the teenaged Thomson, eyes glazed over, developed two vexations. First, the pastor harangued loudly. Second, he spoke with a strange (Yankee) accent. The Scotchman’s burr clashed with a Western New York twang. The Reverend was a fiery western New Yorker by the name of Merritt Gally. Young Thomson immediately disliked Gally, and this hatred would survive both men for the rest of their days.
Gally had been an apprentice printer before he altered course to enter the clergy instead. At a young age, he learned engraving and design and worked for his stepfather, a master mechanic. The knowledge of mechanical engineering would come in handy. After a year, Gally designed and constructed his printing press while opening a print shop with his brother. But the pulpit beckoned, and Gally gave up his life of print in exchange for the Bible.
A short three years later, Gally was forced to retire from the ministry due to severe bronchial health problems and threw himself back into the printing

world. This time Gally used his obvious high intellect to invent a radically new printing press. What transpired was a platen superior to anything on the market, utilizing a never-before-seen mechanical movement. The Universal, as the press would be named, was born in 1869 in New York City.
Before Gally’s press, there were three major types of construction: the Gordon, Boston and Clamshell (often referred to as Liberty). Gordon took its name after the American inventor George Gordon and appeared in the 1860s. Eventually manufactured in the hundreds of thousands by many builders, the Gordon Principle held the upper hand and the lion’s share of the exploding print industry. Gordons were produced not only in the United States and Canada, but also in Britain and Europe; if you have ever seen a Chandler & Price, you’ve seen a Gordon.
The Boston principle would also receive wide recognition, mainly after Heidelberg chose it as the famous T Platen press’s foundation in 1914. Boston is a simple design of the platen pivoting on a spindle and “swinging” up to meet the bed.
Finally, the Clamshell (or Liberty) worked just as the name implies, similar to a clam hinging open and closed, and as a result, proved to be the least expensive to manufacture, but the one with the weakest design. Often these types of machines were endowed with the most outlandish names, such as Dauntless, Lightning or Merveilleuse (marvelous in

French). Marketing was important in attempting to attract buyers for these inferior imitations.
The Gally “Universal” is now referred to as the PARALLEL IMPRESSION due to the platen’s unique action that, instead of swinging into the bed, was directed by a massive “S” shaped cam to become perfectly parallel just before making contact with the type matter. In a short period of time, the Gally would become the talk of the Northeast. In later years, the Gally would also be nicknamed the ART PLATEN for its superior impressional strength.
With no way of affording to manufacture his now patented “Universal”, Gally sought out the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, based in Hartford, Conn. Between 1877 and 1886, over 2,000 Gally Universal presses left the Colt factory. Unfortunately, 1886 was also the year Gally’s patents expired, and Colt seized the opportunity to manufacture the Universal on its own, with only the gunmaker’s name on the press. As an odd coincidence, John Thomson happened to be the Universal press division manager at Colt. Of all the people Thomson wanted to meet again, Merritt Gally wasn’t one of them.
As a young man, John Thomson continued his education and was now an engineer of considerable talent. Over Thomson’s life, he would work in various fields other than printing. Thomson de-

signed water meters and was a consulting engineer to the NewYork Electric Subway Commission. The Thomson Water Meter Company (1890) was housed in a wonderfully Beaux-Arts designed building in Brooklyn that remains fully restored. After Thomson’s death, the building was sold to the New York Eskimo Pie Corporation, where Eskimo Pies were produced as late as 1966. Over 200 patents were granted to Thomson during his lifetime (deceased in 1926). During his tenure as Colt’s manager, he also made substantial patented improvements to Gally’s original press, which he retained personally. Of
all the wide-spread inventions, Thomson is best remembered for his involvement in the printing industry.
Gally was outraged. This former preacher breathed fire as he aggressively litigated against Colt over the theft of his design. But Colt and Thomson would win the case as the patent laws were clear, and Colt owned all the tooling, patterns and machinery to make the press. Gally attempted to continue, but his days of press building were winding down. The National Machine Company of Hartford would take over the original Gally design but would eventually be purchased by Thomson to form the firm that still exists today: The Thomson National Press Company (1923). However, there were other opportunities for Gally outside print. One of these was Gally’s improvement of automatic musical instruments and construction of the Orchestrone and Gally automatic piano. It was claimed that nearly all modern pneumatic church organs were equipped with his `back vent’ pneumatics.
Thomson was most likely delighted to see his nemesis go down in flames in a New York courtroom. And between 1886 and 1902, John Thomson would remain employed at Colt. By May 1, 1902, Thomson succeeded in purchasing the complete press-manufacturing division from Colt
and relocated the business to Long Island City, N.Y., where a new factory was completed in 1906. Several models were supplied, generally for printing. The Universal design’s robustness also established an unexpected opportunity in the rapidly-growing paper-box industry where the platen proved superior to all others. Universal’s superiority brought about rapid changes, now relegating the printing version to obsolescence. Larger, even more robust platens were designed, and Thomson quickly caught the attention of the Germans. Dozens of European (primarily German) firms started to copy the Universal, and most included inkers for printing. One of the most famous machine builders was the “Victoria,” manufactured in Leipzig. The Italians’ Nebiolo and Saroglia, even the famous German Planeta, offered a version.
As time went on, the original Colt’s Armory presses faced stronger competition from German imports entering Britain and the U.S. Victoria offered multiple options and many enhancements not available on Thomson’s presses. By the end of World War I, Thomson had been building machines exclusively for cutting, creasing and embossing. Thomson even designed the first heated bed for heavy embossing and foil stamping.

After the Second World War, the desire for larger cutting platens increased tremendously and attracted further newcomers. As always seemed the case, these new builders also hailed from Europe. The results were a much wider availability of super-large sizes explicitly built for cutting and creasing. Three iconic manufacturers, Rabolini (Imperia) from Italy, Crosland from the U.K., and Kerma from Germany, held top positions, especially for die-cutters larger than 40 inches (102cm). During the early 1970s, Eberhard Sutter (Spain) quickly picked up market share as the hand-fed business and high manufacturing cost placed the German and British at a significant disadvantage. Sutter (now owned by Spanish firm Cauhé) rapidly expanded their production, even offering a massive 71” x 126” (180 x 320cm) version.
As the 1980s wound down, the Chinese had awoken from a deep Mao-induced hibernation and had no trouble dealing with environmental issues that so plagued American and European foundry operations. Add in cheap labor, and virtually overnight, hundreds of versions of the Universal were being manufac -
tured in the thousands. The competition was so intense that often the Chinese would produce copies of copies of copies. Quality control was especially problematic during the 1990s, but the selling prices were incredibly low, and sales to Europe and America did nothing but increase over time.
During Thomson’s lifetime, there were no safety devices on these rather dangerous presses. The only protection was whatever was between the operator’s ears. Mechanical clutches soon eclipsed the old fast-and-loose pulley and was superseded by pneumatic and electro-magnetic clutch/brake combinations. It was a relatively normal instance to see men walking around a shop missing digits or complete arms: everyone knew the cause.
Today these types of Universal platens are still counted in the thousands and in operation worldwide. They are used in the gasket and veneer industry and print’s own point-of-sale signage and display sector. Due to fast make-ready, the Universal platen today remains an ideal tool for very-large-format work. Only recently has new technology made inroads in displacing the Universal. The Swiss firm Zund and the Belgian Esko-Kongsberg are two of the most popular CAD cutting table manufacturers. While being slower,

these machines don’t require a steel rule die and take advantage of software that allows the operator to do very little work. As run lengths decrease, these platforms have a negative impact on the Universal platen press. Just as the offset press’s twilight is close at hand, with digital presses making substantial progress, the programmable cutting table is knocking off a 151-year-old technology that is easily the printing industry’s longest and most successful production tool.
After all these years (1869 to 2020), the Gally-Universal press continues to be called something that it isn’t; a Clamshell platen. The correct designation is a Parallel Impression platen. Merritt Gally’s brilliant invention and John Thomson’s improvements have stood the test of time.
Just think, it all started in 1866 in Marion, New York, when a Scottish boy met a Yankee Pastor and they somehow developed a lifelong dislike of each other.

Most people, even many printers, think of ‘direct mail’ as the realtor’s postcard, pizza flyers, restaurant menus or the latest internet service offer to come through the mail slot.

By Scott Gray
The pandemic has impacted our print and communication industry unlike anything we have experienced before. Are you acting like the expert your clients need? Let’s face facts: it is crazy to sit back and hope your clients are going to continue doing work with you. Unfortunately, a lot of companies are doing just that.
Many clients are still very cautious about spending marketing dollars when they know that without a doubt, they must. They are looking for creative communication leadership and advice from their best partners, you. We are at least six months into this current crisis and must continue to adapt our business strategies and tactics to suit our clients’ changing needs. Printers need to move beyond social distancing
stickers; we need to solve our client’s biggest question: “How do I stay front of mind for my best clients?”
Your response should be an emphatic, “I’m the one who can help you keep your momentum going, adjust your marketing tactics, get personal, and not disappear from your client’s minds!”
We have all adapted to a world of digital first communication remarkably well in a short period of time. We’re all attending meetings and conferences by Zoom, our electronic outbound marketing (a whole separate conversation) and social media presence has grown exponentially, websites are more important, we are cooking more, drinking more, writing more. So why aren’t we printing more?
Before you help your clients, let’s make sure your own house is in order:

Explore it with Heidelberg and MK Masterwork. As the world’s largest supplier of machines for packaging printing, our portfolio is the most comprehensive in the industry. And one that offers complete confidence: MK Masterwork is the only supplier whose machines are all GS certified. Learn more at http://bit.ly/WorldofPackaging

• Are your services as relevant today as they were six months ago?
• Do you provide transactional print, or do you solve your client’s communication problems?
• How easily can new prospects find your website in today’s SEO-optimized world?
• What non-traditional communication services have you added to your core competencies: design, websites, storefronts, fulfillment, packaging, promotional items?
• How do you change your traditional print service model into print communication services that align with a digital first communication strategy?
Digital first communication strategies have exploded and are exceptionally powerful, however, have you noticed the signs of digital fatigue settling in? Print can play an incredibly powerful supporting role to strengthen any digital campaign. Now is the time to have conversations about (re)introducing direct mail into your client’s digital strategy. It’s been proven time and again; the more senses you touch, users experience increased emotional engagement and stronger brand recall. When digital strategies overlap with intelligently planned, well-designed print, impressions stick.
Few people have paid attention to the fact that this recent sharp increase in online advertising is creating huge competition for paid ad word campaigns, causing many common cost-per-click search terms to increase dramatically, which really only benefits Google. All of a sudden, a $2 targeted direct mail unit cost is looking a lot sexier than a $5-per-click digital ad spend. With this in mind, I’m shocked at how few direct mail pieces have come through my mail slot these past few months, as we now have an audience looking for thoughtful, well designed, tactile stimulation to cut through the digital noise.
Let’s make sure we understand what direct mail is, and better yet, what its potential is.
Most people, even many printers, think of ‘direct mail’ as the realtor’s postcard, pizza flyers, restaurant menus or the latest internet service offer that flops through the mail slot. The belief is that ultimately, direct mail is encouraging the reader to visit a website or store, but direct mail is so much more than that.
Work with your client to define who you are targeting:
• Target Geography – cover specific geographic areas using specified postal walks, typically created with Canada Post’s Precision targeting tools drawing a defined radius around a business to create broad reach B-C campaigns. Otherwise known as ‘spray and pray’. This works effectively for your local pizza joint, new local businesses in the area, or the latest internet service provider offer.
• Target Demographics – we can refine our market audience using 14 demographic categories based on driving distance from your business, household age and income, as well as the type of residence by house, apartment or business. This is great for real estate, senior living services, and home maintenance services.
• Target your clients’ Contact Relationship Management (CRM) data – this is free and readily available information to leverage. In a digital first strategy, it’s likely your client has their list finely tuned and can provide it to you. CRMs contain past, current and prospective clients. This can narrow down the search for Business to Business communication. The challenge is ensuring the information is up to date. This can require a little work on your client’s part but honestly, this is their lifeblood and should be well maintained (so should yours!).
• Target purchased lists – partner with your local mail shop or list broker to access refined demographic lists targeting your specific prospects. Be sure that you have an appropriate budget and the lists are valid and up to date; you’ll still need to scrub for accuracy. In today’s pandemic environment, even list brokers are scrambling to ensure their information is accurate with so many jobs paused, moved or lost.
• Target influencers – Influencer kits are your laser targeted sales tool. These must be designed to appeal to a small audience that holds great social power within a very specific market segment.Who are influencers in your business? They are thought leaders who act as megaphones, spreading brand messages to potential customers. An influencer endorsement means that prospective buyers are more likely to be receptive to your brand message. This is where you show true power in print customization. Playful, exciting and Instagram-worthy, influencer kits present a product like a gift, rather than an envelope.
Here are a few statistics we know about direct mail (according to Canada Post):
• 74 per cent of Canadian consumers always or sometimes notice advertising in direct mail.
• 86 per cent of Canadian consumers open mail that’s personally addressed to them.
• Integrated direct mail and digital campaigns elicit 39 per cent more attention (time spent) than digital campaigns alone.
No doubt, these are difficult times to navigate a business. It is our job as professional communicators to guide our client’s message to market. Do not be excluded from a digital first conversation. Do not let your clients go quiet and disappear. Use your knowledge and knowhow to help your clients keep their momentum going, get personal, shift tactics and get noisy.

How
By Kavita Sabharwal-Chomiuk
Jones Soda Co. is a long-standing craft soda brand known for its unique flavours and quality ingredients. Perhaps more so, Jones Soda is distinguished by its regularly-changing labels that feature photos sent in from its customers, helping create a strong brand identity. Now, Jones Soda has teamed up with the non-profit and non-partisan Voter Participation Center (VPC) to put voter registration directly into customers’ hands.
The two companies have partnered on voting-themed labels featuring QR codes that will take customers directly to a voting registration site. Powered by the VPC, the bottles allow eligible United States citizens to register to vote, check their current registration status, and find information on voting guidelines and state registration deadlines from their smartphones. The bottles featuring the limited-edition Vote 2020 labels reached store shelves at the beginning of September.
The soda labels feature six different designs created by artists and consumers in

a total print run of 500,000. The graphics include a “Voting Beats Not Voting” message to a label emblazoned with the word “Vote” several times, superimposed over an image of the Statue of Liberty. The label is embedded with a QR code that enables online voter registration in about two minutes with a driver’s license or a state identification card.
“The right to vote is a cornerstone of American democracy but millions of eligible voters aren’t registered even in a normal year, and this year is obviously not normal,” said Jones Soda interim CEO Jamie Colbourne. “Registration numbers are at historic lows because the pandemic has shut down many voter registration sites and live events. We created our Vote 2020 bottles to both inspire people to register and give them a way to do it without even putting down their drink. We hope to reach our core consumer set, GenZers, who make up 10 per cent of the eligible voting pool, and make a real impact on the voices that get heard on Election Day and beyond.”
The initiative is the latest in Jones Soda’s history of printing special edition labels, as they did during the presidential election of

2008, when their labels featured each of that year’s candidates. This year, the company also featured labels with “Messages of Hope,” sharing images of positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Every voice counts
Leading up to the election in November, the Voter Participation Center is increasing its mail, digital and text outreach efforts to encourage members of the Rising American Electorate, including unmarried women, people of colour and young people, to register to vote. Since its founding in 2003, the VPC has worked with its partner, the Center for Voter Information, to help over five million people register to vote. During this election cycle alone, the organizations have together helped over one million people register to vote and have helped another 2.5 million people send Vote-by-Mail applications to local election officials to be applicable to vote from home.
“With COVID-19 putting traditional in-person voter-engagement efforts on hold, partnering with Jones Soda is among the most creative new approaches we are using to empower historically under-represented voters to participate in democracy,” said Tom Lopach, president and CEO of the Voter Participation Center. “Everyone who buys a Jones Soda looks closely at the labels because they’re fun and constantly changing, so it’s a great opportunity for us to both call attention to the importance of voting and enable people to register on the spot simply by using their smartphones.”
By Bob Dale and Gord Griffiths
Arecent PIA study from this summer indicated that 50 to 65 per cent of commercial and signage printers had a decrease in revenue in the past 30 days, and some knowledgeable sources estimate that 30 to 40 per cent of commercial printers may close or merge in the next 12 months.
The challenge of building sales is the number one issue reported by most printers. While some segments have fared better than others, most commercial printers have experienced a serious decline in sales. One method to grow sales includes acquisition, but challenges increase with reduced access to capital and higher risks of retaining the sales from the acquired company, and the fact that many owners are at a stage of life where they do not want to risk hard earned capital with retirement on the horizon.
There have been many articles and blogs written on how to build sales organically with many common messages – communicate, differentiate, prospect, diversify and avoid discounting!
The reality is much more complex and difficult. Pre-COVID-19, many companies needed to secure 10 to 20 per cent new sales every year just to remain even, due to issues like not repeating some print projects annually, decreasing quantities and customer churn in today’s market.
Compound this with a recent study by Gartner Inc. of marketing budgets and spending in North America and Europe that indicated that 44 per cent of chief marketing officers will cut budgets in 2020. The transition to ecommerce has accelerated to the extent that McKinsey recently reported that the transition to online channels has experienced 10 years of growth in three months! Remaining marketing spend will continue to shift to digital and shorter runs, especially with the quickly changing messaging due to current uncertainties.
With the onset of COVID-19, many companies were able to quickly adjust their variable costs (labour, consumables, etc.), delay investments and access

government support. However, the new reality is that there are fewer print opportunities available, and often the work that replaces work lost is at a lower margin. Printers will need to take decisive action. Here are a few options that you can consider.
If you have already cut variable costs, now may be the time to reduce fixed costs, which may be far more difficult. Some full-time staff positions can be replaced with part time or contractors. Extra space can be sublet or disposed of, like warehousing or that space you had available for the new press that was put on hold. Sell underutilized equipment and outsource to a trade service when the need arises.
It is better to sell an operating business than deal with forced closure. A business is like the stock market; is the value going up or down? Can you improve the shortterm financial picture with minimal investment? Engaging a third party that sees your business from a different perspective would give an unbiased review of your present value.
If you own the building, the decision may be easier, as you will likely have access to the funds necessary to avoid personal liability. Few owners who can afford to pay off suppliers and employee severance will choose this option. They would want to capitalize on their investment, which may include unrealized value with their customer base.
The old expression “two heads may be better than one” can also apply to mergers. A company with $10 million in sales may have similar overheads as a company with $20 million! Mergers can spread the fixed costs over greater sales, however the integration will be the key challenge. Many mergers do not achieve the planned benefits because the process is complex and may not be managed well.
Competitors may not be the enemy and consideration of going to market together could be advantageous if there is an increased product offering to a larger prospect or customer base. Is there a successful print broker or customer who may want to invest in your business in exchange for some equity? Consider increasing some of your product offering with a strategic partner who has a non-competitive product offering. A commercial or digital printer can offer labels from a specialist, especially with digital storefront channels.
In the past, some printers may have increased success by consolidating business offerings under one roof. With current market conditions, expansion may be too risky, so it may be more appropriate to outsource production aspects instead of investing in new equipment.
There are fewer print opportunities available, and often the work that replaces work lost is at a lower margin.
Many printers believe the fastest way to grow is through acquisition, however another approach is to capitalize and improve your sales effectiveness through education, technology and management support.
Reflect on your current situation and consider these suggestions. The key message is to focus on work that has a sustainable margin.

Eric Balshin is the chief executive officer of Yesterday Wellness, a Canadian company that manufactures CBD products to promote calm and relaxation to customers in the United States. We spoke with Eric about Yesterday Wellness’ product packaging, and how the packaging was designed to reflect the product within.
How did you come up with the design concept for the packaging and labels?
EB: It all started with the name. We went out and did a big study with a number of different packaging designs along with the name to figure out how it resonated with our core demographic, women aged 30 to 60 years old, give or take. Generally speaking, the feedback we got, not only on the name, but on the beach motif and the packaging, was extremely positive. With the inspiration behind it, we really wanted the packaging to feel as natural as possible. Everything from the paper stock to the colours we used, the typography, the photography, we really just wanted it to feel and reflect that the product is all-natural.
The beach and that kind of imagery is all meant to evoke the opposite of stress – that feeling that everything is well and you can relax and sit back and enjoy your life. It brings you back to a point where things are a little bit easier, things are a little more relaxed. Maybe you’re on a beach at some point and enjoying your vacation; that’s kind of the inspiration behind it.
Can you describe the paper stock and the typography used?
EB: The paper is not coated at all, it’s purely natural. We wanted something a little bit thicker that would get across that premium nature of the packaging, but we also didn’t want it to feel wasteful at all. We really tried to find a paper stock that hit all that criteria where it held the ink really well and printed really nicely and beautifully, and that it didn’t have any added kind of chemicals so that it was highly sustainable and natural. On the typography, we’re using Neuton Bold for most of the major headlines, and Montserrat Regular for the sub-headings.
Why did you decide on black-and-white packaging?
EB: I think it’s more the name itself and the nostalgia feeling of thinking about better times, older times or simpler times. And so that was kind of the idea there, that the black and white photography and the background itself, bringing some of those colours through the photography kind of made it look and feel in that relaxing, nostalgic mindset.
Can you discuss the creative process behind creating the packaging and design?
EB: I was part of it, but the packaging was

It brings you back to a point where things are a little bit easier, things are a little more relaxed.
designed by Toronto-based creative agency Open. We started with a list of different types of names, whether it was functionality or nostalgic or stuff along those lines. We whittled it down, we had our internal votes, brought it down to a smaller group. From there, we took the names and we tried to mock up packaging to get a feeling for what they could look like, once we brought them to life. And then from there, we made some revisions, then did the grand study. We went to a group of about 1,000 people across the U.S. in our target demographic. We accumulated the results, we looked at the data, and we chose the one that really resonated with us. From there, we had a lot of revisionary work. And then, just in terms of the readability of the packaging itself and making sure there’s lots of negative whitespace, it’s really all just about that simple feeling, that really natural look, and keeping it looking very premium.
What did you learn about packaging during the process?
EB: I did learn a lot about packaging along the way. Everything from Pantone to CMYK for using two, four or six colours. We put a double hit of black on the logo. We had embossing on the logo, we tried to keep the
imagery as high quality as possible. That led to a little bit of a difficult process in terms of having all the print itself be very clear and legible while also having the image come through the way we wanted it to. It was definitely a process for me to get to that point, because I’ve never done anything like this before.
How do you think the packaging represents the products?
EB: It all comes back to the same way of thinking about the products. We really wanted to go after the customers’ emotional side, specifically stress and anxiety. I think, based on everything we’ve been reading and all the application studies and all the work we’ve done ourselves, that seems to be the one that holds true the most across everybody. When we were thinking about the name and how it relates to the product and what we’re trying to do there, it’s really about hitting on that emotional side of the equation, the stress and anxiety. Leave the stresses of today in the past.
