CONFERENCE & EXHIBITS 2016

APRIL 20 · THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE

GLASS CANADA

Bursting at the seams

The growth of the 2016 show exceeded all expectations

Welcome to our digital wrap-up report on Top Glass 2016. Top Glass is Canada’s conference and trade event for the commercial glazing industry. It took place April 20 at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont., and returns April 12, 2017, to the same location. Inside, you’ll find complete reports on what went on at the show including information on the products exhibited, the exclusive education sessions, the OGMA Awards of Excellence presentation and more. I hope you will find it useful in case you missed the show, or are trying to remember some of the things you saw and heard.

There’s no question we were victims of our own success this year. Attendance spiked up by more than half compared to the year before, even though the pre-registration numbers were about the same. The crowd overwhelmed our lecture theatre, which was about the same size as the year before. We were forced to open one side of the room in order to provide more seating, with the drawback of letting more ambient noise from the show floor into the area. The speakers were still audible, but you did need to concentrate past the buzz from the booths. We apologize to anyone who had trouble hearing, or who had to stand for the sessions. Plans are in place to at least double the amount of available seating for next year’s event, which will allow us to keep the lecture hall enclosed and quieter.

I want to personally thank the sponsors, exhibitors, association partners and presenters who make it possible for us to offer this excellent educational program and networking opportunity for free. You can find more information about them on page X. It always seems to be the same companies that are stepping up to offer their support for industry events like this. I think their willingness to invest in the success of everyone in this industry says something about them that goes beyond any marketing motive. I commend them to your attention next time you are looking for a trustworthy supplier. We’re already looking ahead to 2017. If you have suggestions for seminar topics, or feel you have valuable technical information to share with the industry yourself, please email me at pflannery@annexweb.com. If you’d like to exhibit or sponsor next year’s Top Glass, please contact Danielle Labrie at dlabrie@annexweb.com. With your help, maybe we can blow the doors off this thing again next year!com). Online attendee registration will open this fall.

Top Glass broke records on April 20 with 383 attendees, including a strong turnout of 150 architects, specifiers and building engineers. The four one-hour education sessions were standing-room only as attendees flooded in to appreciate the presentations, which were eligible for continuing education credits. Top Glass was supported by generous sponsorships from Gold Sponsors Alumicor and Tremco; Silver Sponsors Commdoor Aluminum and RPM Rollformed Metal Products; and livestream sponsor Sika Canada.

The huge increase in attendance created some challenges for show organizers. Plans are in place to significantly increase the size of the lecture hall for 2017 and to streamline the process for collecting information for issuing attendance certificates.

Many attendees approached show organizers to express their appreciation for the event. They pointed to the high quality of the educational content, the convenient, oneday format and the chance to speak to so many professionals from the glass industry in one place as major benefits. “Thank you for hosting this day,” said Magid Youssef of 4 Architecture. “The topics were really interesting and well presented. I wish there were more events like this.”

For the first time, Top Glass education seminars were livestreamed to an online audience across the country. Excerpts from the livestream broadcast will be made available for general viewing in the coming weeks.

Exhibitors were delighted with the turnout and the quality of the attendees. “Excellent show, very well promoted and organized and the attendance speaks for itself,” said Yousif Abachi, vice-president of operations for RPM Rollformed Metal Products. “We are very confident that we will see results and orders.”

The education sessions included seminars on vacuum insulating glass, IG unit failures, window wall challenges and laminar bonding of large format glass panels. Attendees also took in the Ontario Glass and Metal Association’s presentation of Awards of Excellence to TAGG Industries and Perkins and Will for outstanding projects they completed in 2015.

Top Glass 2017 will take place April 12, 2017, at the International Centre. Organizers are accepting booth reservations (contact Danielle Labrie at dlabrie@annexweb.com) and proposals for education sessions (contact Patrick Flannery at pflannery@annexweb. com). Online attendee registration will open this fall.

OGMA Awards for Excellence

The OGMA presents awards for outstanding glazing

Steve Dulong of TAGG Industries accepts the award for Excellence in Architectural Glass Execution for their work on Google’s Canadian headquarters in Kitchener, Ont.

The Ontario Glass and Metal Association presented its Awards of Excellence to two Ontario companies at the Top Glass trade conference on April 20. TAGG Industries won the award for Excellence in Architectural Glass Execution, and Perkins Plus Will won Excellence in Architectural Glass Design. TAGG won for its work on Google’s Canadian headquarters in Kitchener, Ont., and Perry Plus Will won for Mohawk College’s David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The award was judged by Adrian Phillips and Paul Marcoccia of CS&P Architects. Only OGMA members could nominate winners, but any Ontario architectural glass provider was eligible to win the awards.

About the Google headquarters, the judges said, “This project is a wonderful example of how curtainwall can be manipulated to create complex geometric forms which exude a high level of elegance – this can only be carried off successfully if the execution is of the highest level.”

Regarding the David Braley Centre, they noted, “The curtainwall in this project transcends merely being sculptural by having form effectively follow function and vice versa.”

On hand to accept their awards were Phil Fenech, a principal at Perkins Plus Will, and Steve Dulong, CEO of TAGG Industries.

The OGMA is accepting nominations for its 2017 Awards of Excellence, which will be presented at Top Glass on April 12, 2017. Members wishing to nominate an outstanding project should contact Lee Baker at lbaker@tremco.ca

Sessions overflow with interest

Next time, we’re going to need a bigger boat

The centrepiece of Top Glass was four exclusive education sessions presented by noted experts in the fields of architectural glass and building science. The sessions were eligible for structured learning credits at the Ontario Association of Architects, an each attendee received a Letter of Attendance confirming their participation. The education seminars were broadcast via online livestream to subscribers across the country, and attendees can receive a link to access the livestream recording. Access to individual session recordings is available for purchase for non-attendees at glasscanadamag.com.

“The show has really been incredible. The industry needs something like this.”
- STEVE GUSTERSON, ALUMICOR

enjoyed being there and had some good traffic. We already had one firm contact us the day after the show to add our new window to their specs.”

With 130 more attendees than the 2015 edition, Top Glass was challenged to get everyone in to the lecture hall.

Energy efficient spandrel design

Forty-eight-year veteran of the glass industry, Bill Lingnell, introduced attendees to the technology behind vacuum insulating glass and updated them on the industry’s efforts to establish codes and standards for use of this emerging product. While not a new idea (Lingnell explained that the theory behind VIG has been around since the 19th century), advances in manufacturing automation and materials are now promising to make VIG a viable product in more applications. Lingnell explained the science behind the extreme insulating properties of VIG and outlined the fabrication process. He noted that IGMA has released guidelines for fabricators, but that no standard exists presently to guide building code officials.

Window wall:

Fundamental

flaws and smart solutions

Presenter: George Torok, building science specialist, Morrison Hershfield

George Torok has seen it all in 28 years of investigating building envelope failures and consulting on repairs, renovations and new construction. He brought concrete examples (with photos!) to the session, showing attendees how window wall needs to be designed and installed for maximum success, and illustrating the pitfalls of incorrect approaches.

The longevity equation: Common modes of failure in insulating glass units and what to do about them

Presenter: Brian Hubbs, managing principal and senior building science specialist, RDH Building Science

Brian Hubbs presented an extensive gallery of case studies examining insulating glass failures in building envelopes across the country and detailing lessons learned from their remediation. Attendees were impressed by Hubbs’ valuable insight into the sources and solutions for insulating glass failures that can cost building owners millions.

Laminar glass bonding: Advances in non-mechanical glass fixation

Pressed into service at the last minute, Collins and Eshesimua did yeoman’s work standing in for the originally scheduled presenter, Dr. Werner Wagner. They described Sika’s work in assisting fabricators to create very large monolithic glass panels for some of the highest profile projects on the continent. Key to their success has been new bonding and laminating technology that allows huge sheets of glass weighing tons to be fixed in place without profiles or point-supported hardware.
