Yate-based business revolutionises how the world accesses British food and drink

It wasn’t long ago when British expats had to travel back to the UK to enjoy the food and drink that many of us take for granted (proper tea, biscuits and crumpets are hard to come by outside of Great Britain). Thanks to British Corner Shop, a Yate-based food and drink exporter, British expats no longer need to cram empty suitcases to enjoy their favourites in their home abroad. Since 1999, British Corner Shop has been exporting the Best of British to everyone from British expats to international supermarkets. Thanks to their booming bulk & wholesale business, they have been able to connect more British food lovers with their home comforts than ever before! From humble beginnings, British Corner Shop began in two entrepreneurs’ kitchen as they packaged groceries from their local supermarket to be shipped abroad. When current Managing Director, Mark Callaghan, took over in 2004, he worked to transform the business into the exporter it is today – an award-winning company (including Queen’s award and Sunday Times SME Export Track Top 100) which is on its way to being a £100 million export platform. Now with 100 staff from the surrounding area, this growing business continues to provide fantastic career opportunities in a wide range of roles - from warehouse operatives to developers. With an extensive range of products, including exclusive brands and Waitrose & Partners, British Corner Shop continues to see huge growth as they become the go-to for British Brands for businesses and individuals alike. As we enter the run-up to Christmas, demand skyrockets as customers look to source their British favourites at this nostalgic time of year – it just isn’t Christmas without mince pies! The front cover this month features our great team. If you would like to find out more, please visit www.britishcornershop.co.uk.

FREE REVIEW to fix any gaps in your legal protection The law often doesn‟t work in the way you‟d expect. Having NO Will or NO Powers of Attorney can cause huge problems for those you most care about. If you became seriously ill or suffered a serious injury or perhaps a routine operation went wrong, leaving you unable to make decisions on your own, then having Powers of Attorney in place can mean you:-

Give access to your savings – perhaps to pay for care or treatment or to pay to support your children or just to pay your bills. Otherwise they can be automatically frozen.

Can move home to more suitable accommodation. Otherwise you can be stuck, unable to sell, where you‟ve not already authorised anyone to sign for you on your property transfer documents.

Georgina Causon

Allow those you trust to speak up for you in relation to your medical treatment. This can be like a modern version of Living Wills covering your wishes for resuscitation if you have no quality of life. John Baden-Daintree of Simpson Solicitors says “Even if you are married or have a close family you need to appoint those you trust IN ADVANCE. Or they can face huge upset at feeling powerless to help you and often extra expense to try to sort everything out”. Depending on your situation, the law can also have very cruel consequences if you died with No Will. In the worst cases it can mean:-

   

No inheritance for your children. No inheritance for your partner if you are not married. Children under 18 in care until the court decides who should look after them.

The inheritance you wanted to leave being used to pay avoidable tax or care home fees Act now to make sure there is no gaps in your legal protection. Simpson Solicitors offer our readers a FREE, no obligation, review meeting with COVID – safe measures in place. If getting to their office is difficult they offer a FREE home meeting service too, where it is possible to keep 2m apart. If you decide to use their services mention this article as our readers will get 20% off their already competitive fixed prices for Wills and Powers of Attorney. So, pop in to their Chipping Sodbury office (opposite The Coventry) or call them today on 01454 322 722 to arrange your free meeting.

Latest News from Team Building with BITE

Keeping animals in zoos and sanctuaries happy and engaged has never been an easy job, it requires a lot of expert knowledge and commitment to long term care. Previously we covered how Mark and Chris came up with a concept to give Corporate groups and members of the public the chance to engage and help with this process through team building events, and since lockdown, a subscription service through Patreon. The Patreon platform has been a real release for creativity. Guided by the animals natural behaviour, in the last 3 months they‟ve renovated an enclosure for rescued ex-pet monkeys, developed a suspended feeder for the incredibly agile kinkajous, designed a timed feeding device triggered by melting ice cubes for nocturnal species like the rare and elusive Owston‟s civet, and just last month created a new feeder for wild equids like Zebra, as well as domestic horses. To help even more animals, they‟ve now added an option to gift an enrichment item to a specific animal, which they will build, deliver and, publicly thank you for, creating a unique sponsorship optionfor companies, or a truly memorable Birthday or Anniversary gift for a loved one! We are very excited to finally reveal that we are going to be doing a big build project at Jimmy's Farm and Wildlife Park, UK, at the end of September. This in itself it is exciting news for us, as it is a huge challenge we only have 5 days to complete, BUT it is also going to be filmed as part of the Channel 4's prime time show 'Autumn at Jimmy's Farm' hosted by Jimmy Doherty. Jimmy himself will be popping by to give us a hand at various points through the build, and we cannot reveal the species or any more details at this stage, but we are really looking forward to bringing you all some behind the scenes of how it all goes in October.

New Job Vacancy Platform helps local job seekers and businesses Local businessman and chairman of SYBA (Sodbury & Yate Business Association) James Rendell has undertaken a new project, and it‟s called Jobopoly! Jobopoly is a new job platform for the people and businesses of Bristol, Bath, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. It was born to simplify the recruitment process, allowing candidates to search for jobs and apply directly to the employer. James is also Club Captain and youth team coach at Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club and is passionate about the local community. “I wanted to create a platform that presented opportunities for local people to search and apply for jobs, direct.” “This job site is only suitable for employers who are recruiting themselves (not for recruitment agencies to advertis e oth er vacancies). I wanted to give candidates the ability to apply directly to the business they are applying to” James has spent many years in recruitment and runs a niche nationwide financial planning agency called Clever-HR, based in Chipping Sodbury. “This is an alternative for businesses who prefer not to use recruitment agencies. Jobopoly is a way they can save money and promote themselves at the same time with an „employer profile‟. I want it to act as an extension to a company‟s careers page to help them attract local talent” The platform is now live and James and his colleague Ben are offering local businesses the opportunity to post onto Jobopoly for free. This includes an employer profile which is a chance to really describe the business and entice the right applicants. Employers can add social media links, upload images and video as well as written content. If you are currently looking for a new opportunity, then Jobopoly have numerous positions listed.

Farm Tales

In this month’s farm tales, we wanted to introduce you to our two favourite furry friends…Dotty and Pingu! Our little terriers, who love spending their days on the farm. They can often be found scampering over the hay and straw bales or trying to steal any left-over milk from the calves! September has been a busy one for us as we have been bringing in the hay and straw to keep us going over the winter. After we finished cutting the grass for hay or silage, we spread muck onto the ground. Although this isn’t very glamorous it is essential to keep the nutrients in the soil so that it is ready for the cultivations in the autumn. When we haven’t been on the tractor, we have been spending time looking after our livestock. This month has seen several days of Tb testing for the cattle, which we carry out with the vet. We have also been busy taking some of the ram lambs from our Suffolk flock to the sale in order to make way for the new arrivals in the Spring. As we like to lamb early, we have put our trusty rams in with the ewes – you can find more about this in a video on our social media! The beef and lamb boxes have been flying from the kitchen and we are already taking orders for October! If you haven’t had one yet – don’t miss out. Please get in touch to reserve your box. You can buy beef boxes in the following sizes:4kg (£50), 7kg (£90) and 10kg (£130) more details can be found on our Facebook page Perrinpit Farm Meat Boxes or please do get in touch on: or Tel:or07919 891 770 Jacks and William perrinpitmeatboxes@outlook.com Tel 01454 774061 Email theboundaryonline@gmail.com 31

COMMUNITY NEWS Yate and District Rotary Club News There have been many difficulties/hardships endured by all of us during these last few months of lockdowns, quarantines and social distancing, but there have also been a few gains: Yate Rotary Club members have continued to meet every week via ‘Zoom’ and have been entertained and inspired by speakers from all over the UK - people whom we would never have been able to meet under normal circumstances. Recently for the first time we made a virtual contact with a Rotary Club in The Gambia. Yate President, Richard Gilpin (pictured below left), visited the Brusubi Club of Serrekunda in March, and then, immediately after that, everything was locked down in both countries, and any thoughts we had of collaborating to help provide a science lab in a secondary school, were forgotten, as our two countries struggled with the corona virus. We were honoured this week with a visit to our meeting, via Zoom, from Dr Martin Sati Rahmon, Charter President (pictured below right), and the current President of the Brusubi Club, President Cornelius Igwe (pictured centre) . Yate Rotary Club will be attending the Brusubi Club meeting in Serrekunda next week.

News from Old Sodbury School: Children attending Old Sodbury School have been enjoying their refurbished school after returning from the summer break. The small village school now has a wonderful refurbished classroom for their Reception class with fabulous outdoor area and the Year 1/2 children have a brand new classroom with a state of the art interactive smart board. The school is known for its nurturing environment and has a Thrive Practitioner who has a new room as part of the refurbishment where children can go if they need support for their social and emotional wellbeing. The school also specialises in the Performing Arts and Forest School activities in the woodland. The Ofsted Outstanding School has been welcoming children from Old Sodbury, Chipping Sodbury and Yate since 1840 and is located on the beautiful Cotswold Way. Applications are now open for Reception class 2021 and more information can be found on the school website. Mrs Webber-Brown (Headteacher) said “The refurbishments have brought great excitement and many a smile to the children’s faces which has been wonderful to see. We are so grateful to South Gloucestershire Council for all their hard work.”’

Enjoying your garden safely this autumn with help from Tom at Ground Care & Fence Repair Autumn is one of those months for making everything ship shape and tidy before the Winter. October lends itself beautifully to this. Whether pressure washing paths, pruning hedges, fixing a fence or making the lawns and borders tidy before the night's draw in Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Many of my clients book me in for a Seasonal tidy up and October is no exception.

Photo :http://bengillett.co.uk/

Ground Care & Fence Repair evolved after I realised that with every fence built comes an understanding of the ground you work with and thus the grounds you work within. For many years as well as learning the art of fencing I was also privy to many beautiful estates and local gardens whereby I would be asked to build a raised bed, strim a hedge or mow a lawn. One skill very much compliments the other. This led me to my dream of going it alone and providing a service whereby I could do both grounds maintenance as well as fencing. With a young family on the way I realised that now was the time to take that leap and start my own business! Since starting my business three years ago I now have a regular client base and a wealth of brilliant suppliers. When I finish a day’s work I always feel proud of how far the business has come in a short period of time. One of the elements to the success of the business is making sure that each client from their initial enquiry to the invoicing stage feels 110% looked after. I may work in an ‘outdoor’ trade but that does not mean one should offer any less customer service. In fact if anything I think this and my passion for doing the best possible job for my clients is what has led us to this point. I can now also offer pressure washing and paddock/ large garden mowing as additional services. Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom

Yacht Club auditions for it’s “Strictly Tap Dancing” competition 2021 With the new series of Strictly Come Dancing now back on BBC television, the Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club are gearing up for their own version, “Strictly Tap Dancing”, when selected Yachties will perform their tap dancing routines in front of a live audience in town in 2021. Auditions for members who feel they have the talent, fitness, and dancing ability will shortly begin and it is expected that a competitive line up will be announced soon. Strictly the judges

The Club has secured, once again, the regular judges of Len Goodman, Darcey Bussell, Craig Revel Horwood, and Bruno Tonioni, who came to Chipping Sodbury (pictured above) on the last occasion the contest was held 4 years ago. On that occasion, the winner was Bruce Hosie, who danced as Ginger Rogers (pictured left in the centre of the photo).

The line up then was (left to right) Stuart Gregory, Dave Pearce, Bruce Hosie, Nick Cragg, and Charles Campbell, with Darcey Bussell far right. Dark horses for the tap dancing crown this time are expected to be David Bussell, Director of Wakes at the club, (pictured) who is believed to be a distant cousin to Darcey, and local character Paddy Smith (pictured) who has been observed in training around Chipping Sodbury on numerous occasions.
