WELCOME TO THE BOUNDARY! Dear Reader, For anyone who missed the very sad news that Jim Elsworth passed away on New Year’s Eve, you will not have seen the double page of tributes in the February magazine. I would be pleased to email a copy of the pages to you if you contact me. Later this year I will start compiling a second book of Jim’s lovely articles and it will be raising funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Jim’s favourite charity. I wish everyone a safe month. All the best,

Angie

COMMUNITY NEWS Young Carers Action Day: Protect young carers’ futures Did you know that many local children and young people are caring for someone at home? Young carers are just kids, yet they care for someone at home who could not do without their help. The average age of a young carer is just 13 years old, and some are as young as 8. Local charity, Carers Support Centre, is raising awareness for Young Carers Action Day, which is on 16 March. The charity supports young carers with assessments, one-to-one and family support, groups and activities. Young carers carry a heavy responsibility, caring for sick and disabled family members. They are often anxi ous, isolated and lonely; fall behind with school work and are bullied. Carer Tasha was supported by Carers Support Centre’s young carers service when she was a young carer. She said: “The support and respite were incredible, and everyone was so encouraging. Without Carers Support Centre, my life would have taken a completely different path. They gave me a voice and made me feel listened to. The charity gave a lot to me and I wanted to give back, so I now volunteer for the young carers service.” This year, young carers want the day to be about their futures. They aim to highlight the incredible skills they have developed through being a carer – like resilience, time-management, organisational skills and empathy. These are all important skills, not just for young people moving into higher education – but also for those looking to enter the workplace. What’s more, they are skills highly sought after by employers. Carers Support Centre asked some of their young carers what they thought about the theme: “People don’t really think there’s anything positive about being a young carer, but there is.” “You do learn a lot from caring, it’s the responsibility you get from it mainly. And you learn to do things yourself without needing another person to help you out with it.” To mark Young Carers Action Day, Carers Support Centre is making a short film for local schools. In the film, those who were once young carers will share their experiences of caring and how they have achieved their goals. The films will highlight the skills of young carers, and inspire them to follow their aspirations. If you know a young person who looks after someone at home, please visit the Carers Support Centre website to learn more about their services and how to make a young carer referral: www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk

COMMUNITY NEWS

South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival 25th Anniversary celebration postponed. It is with much regret that Yate Rotary Club has reached the decision that the famous and much -loved Beer and Music Festival cannot run this year. We cannot be sure of how relaxed the restrictions on public gatherings will be by the time we get to July, and even then, we would be unsure of how many of our friends and acquaintances would want to risk coming to a big event so soon after lockdown. The 25th Anniversary of the South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival will be held at the Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club in July 2022 – all being well!

Hedgehogs in March by Kay Bullen Trustee, British Hedgehog Preservation Society. In some parts of the country the early spring alarm calls will be ringing. It is time to wake up from hibernation. It is thought that the males come out a little earlier than the females. But don’t worry if ‘yours’ is not about yet, some have been known to stay in hibernation up until May! As well as food they will be in need of water. They will not have had a drink during their hibernation so can be dehydrated, but also a little dozy so make sure they cannot fall into ponds or other water features. To check if the occupant of your nest box is up and about put a small piece of screwed up paper just inside the entrance, this will be pushed out by the occupant as it leaves the nest box. You might want to start leaving some meaty cat biscuits out in any feeding stations you have. If you put a saucer over the dish the hedgehog should be able to push this off and you will know a hedgehog is visiting. This also stops, slugs, mice etc from tainting or eating the food at least until after the hedgehog has visited. Once visiting has resumed you can continue to feed with your chosen brand of wet or dry food. Also check any hedgehog highways you may have in your boundary fences and walls. Make sure they have not become blocked over winter, so your prickly visitors can come and go as they please. Any nest boxes that are empty could be cleaned out. Remove any bedding, pour boiling water over the inside, especially around joins where parasites and their eggs may be concealed, then wash with soapy water and rinse. It’s very important to not clean out boxes that are in use, so be sure it’s vacant before proceeding with spring clean. If you need further advice about any hedgehogs that you think are in need of help contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. They can give general advice and perhaps details of a local hedgehog rehabilitator who you can contact for more advice and help. Contact them on 01584 890801 or for general advice visit their website www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Yvonne of Hedgehog Rescue Yate asks: ‘Can you support our petition asking for greater legal protection for the hedgehog, we need to reach 100,000 signatures by the 1st April, currently at just over 77,000? COMMUNITY NEWS COVID won’t wilt Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal as charity urges supporters to spring into action End of life charity Marie Curie is calling on residents of Bristol to support its flagship fundraising campaign, the Great Daffodil Appeal – which is reaching its 35th anniversary next month – and has, for the first time, had to cancel all of their iconic public collections for the campaign. After an extremely difficult 12 months, the charity is facing a potential loss of over £3 million due to the cancelled public collections but has a variety of creative ways that people in Bristol can support the campaign this year including donning their trainers and „stepping up for Marie Curie‟ by walking 10,000 steps every day throughout March. All donations from the Great Daffodil Appeal will ensure that Marie Curie Nurses can continue working on the frontline, providing end of life care in people‟s homes throughout Bristol and the South West. Riona Houghton, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser, said: “The Great Daffodil Appeal is vitally important to us. Having been held every March for over three decades, this is the first time we‟ve had to cancel all of our public collections. This is a huge blow as each volunteer would usually raise an average £80 from a collection shift: enough to pay for the equivalent of four hours of nursing care. “In these unprecedented times we need peoples‟ support now more than ever. From simply making a donation and wearing a daffodil pin to hosting a virtual „Wear Yellow Day‟ - we‟ve created a wide range of fundraising ideas in the hope that we have something to suit everyone.”During the Great Daffodil Appeal the first annual National Day of Reflection will take place. Since the first lockdown began in 2020, millions of people have been bereaved. Join Marie Curie on 23 March, the first anniversary of the first UK lockdown, for a day to reflect and commemorate this tragic loss of life. For more information please contact Riona on 0117 9420 429 or Riona.Houghton@mariecurie.org.uk or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil

Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club announces Officers for 2021-22

The CSYC has been in suspension since 1st April 2020, when the first lockdown came into effect and has been therefore unable to hold any of its usual activities. It is at the Annual General Meeting on April 1st that new appointments are made, and unfortunately, the 2020 AGM had to be cancelled. However, it was agreed that all new appointments would still take effect, so Dave Pearce became Commodore, Paul Clark Vice Commodore, and Gary King Rear Commodore, and that all officers should stay in post for a second year, a wise decision as this year’s AGM is also cancelled. Commodore Dave Pearce (pictured left) hails from Frampton Cotterell, where the River Frome flows past the church, under the bridge to the hilly fields before wending its way to Bristol. Fortunately, the handover of the Commodores Cap to Commodore Pearce had taken place in March 2020 before the virus had tightened its grip. It is hoped that normality will return at some point during Commodore Pearce’s second year so some events can take place! Vice Commodore Paul Clark (pictured centre) is from Old Sodbury, and lives close to the source of the River Frome a matter of yards from his house! Paul is a “cork head”, meaning he is from the Isle of Wight, where he honed his sailing skills as a youngster. Rear Commodore Gary King (pictured right) is from Portsmouth, from where he learned his sailing skills, which have come in useful since he moved to Chipping Sodbury as he lives very close to the River Frome as it flows fiercely through Brook Street. The Club is fortunate to have such a strong succession of experienced yachtsmen, to look forward to. Each of the senior Officers featured have served in all positions, and their promotions are well deserved!

A snowy CSYC Boat

28

The CSYC boat was launched in 2014 on a lovely summers day, as part of Chipping Sodbury in Bloom, and resides adjacent to Wickwar Road,on the beach near the pathway to Waitrose, (see photo). Thanks to Yachtie Mark Woodward for the photo, a very snowy boat is pictured during the recent cold weather. We look forward to Spring, when the flowers on the boat will come into bloom, and begin to cheer us up! Bunny Groves Secretary General.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Laptops and Tablets Needed! Yate Rotary Club steps up the appeal! It has been much publicised in the media in the last few weeks, that many of our school children are unable to access their online lessons, either to learn or to submit their work, or to conduct research on the internet, because they have no computer at home. Our schools are doing a fantastic job, somehow managing to teach the children of key workers who have to be in school, and at the same time, providing a curriculum online for the children who are home-schooling. There must be many people in our community who have recently upgraded their home computers, or indeed their office computers, and now have unused laptops or tablets. If you have an unused laptop which you would like to donate to a school for use by a child without access to the internet, please get in touch with Yate Rotary Club. We are working with the BBC Computers for Schools campaign, and with Business2Schools, a national charity enabling and promoting a network of donors and schools. We can collect your device from you, and have the expertise within our Rotary Club to be able to wipe it clean. Then we can pass it to a local school to have the correct programs loaded, and the school will identify a child or older student who needs it. If you can offer a laptop or tablet, please get in touch via the website: www.yaterotaryclub.co.uk or telephone Marian Gilpin on 01454 321323. Sodbury Town Council initiates Climate Group. Sodbury Town Council has formed a Climate Group with a view to finding ways to meet the challenges faced by our communities as a result of global warming. The earth’s temperature has increased by 3% in the last 50 years, and it has been largely caused by the release of too much carbon dioxide and methane into the air, creating a sort of blanket over the atmosphere, and starting a whole chain of events which break down our ecosystems, change our weather patterns and threaten the existence of many living creatures. The Climate Group is setting out to identify things which all of us can do to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and to promote energy-saving ideas. Initial plans include the promotion of renewable energy installations (solar panels. Air source heat pumps, windmills) reduction of waste, planting of many more trees, reducing our reliance on cars and avoiding plastic packaging. If anyone in the Sodbury area is interested in joining this Climate Group, please contact Sodbury Town Council. Email: enquiries@sodburytowncouncil.gov.uk

Make the most of your garden with help from

Tom at Ground Care & Fence Repair

The month of March is a great time to take a fresh look at your garden and make plans to maximise your use and enjoyment.. Whether pressure washing paths, pruning hedges, fixing a fence or making the lawns and borders tidy before the nights draw in Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Many of my clients book me in for a Seasonal tidy up and we are also having many more requests to replace fencing damaged by the wild winter weather.

Photo :http://bengillett.co.uk/

I was very pleased to receive two very positive testimonials recently which I have included here this month: TESTIMONIAL ONE: GROUND CARE ‘We required 7 large conifer trees to be taken out of the rear Garden. Tom was very responsive when I contacted him, turned up exactly when he said he’s would ti quite and start the job. He completed the Job the a very high standard within in two and a half days. He cleared all rubbish and left the garden clean and tidy. Tom is very knowledgeable and was happy to give advice and tips on the up keep of our Garden, and future projects. I would highly recommend him for any Garden work.’ TESTIMONIAL TWO: GARDEN FENCING ‘We can highly recommend Tom. He responds quickly to communications, gave useful advice and turned up when he said he would. He is thoroughly professional with an eye for detail and knows his trade. The work ( new fencing and gate) was completed to an excellent standard, using top quality materials and on budget.’ Thank you again Tom!’ Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom

Animal Rescue with Jutta Shelter in Crete

Jutta shelter rescues and takes care of around 100 abused, abandoned stray dogs and cats. It also feeds and provides medical care to stray animals in Ierapetra. It is run by its founder, Ioannis, pictured left, who has been involved in animal welfare for over 20 years. The shelter was originally in 2 sites, but it had to be downsized to the current site as it could not afford to run two shelters and provide care to an ever increasing number of animals in need. It receives no financial help from the state and it relies solely on donations. The shelter’s dream is to refurbish the derelict house, creating rooms for elderly, special needs animals, an area for new arrivals and a room for volunteers. Some of the animals, like Aftakias pictured right, , have been here for years. He was a hunter’s dog, abandoned in the mountains to die. Close to death from starvation when rescued, he was brought to the shelter and nursed back to health with special food. The dogs are grouped in small numbers and live in large outdoor enclosures, where they can run and play; safe and well fed. If they are not adopted, we are committed to keeping them safe and happy for life. A lot of them arrive ill, starved, abused, neglected and scared of humans. They all have a sad past. With a lot of love and patience, they are slowly healed and given the chance of living a beautiful life! https://www.youtube.com/c/JuttaShelter https://www.facebook.com/Jutta.Shelter.non.profit

Pictured above left is Valentina who is a volunteer at the shelter and every day she looks after many stray cats in her town. I’ve been following the shelter for a little while and they are doing great works, including the building of a large cat shelter so that the strays can be rehomed away from the busy streets. Some of the animals that need help are in a very bad way but it is great to see the care and love that Ioannis and Valentina provide to turn their lives around This article also appeared in the February magazine but I wanted to reach everyone and also introduce two new members of the Boundary family - we are sponsoring Rena (left) and Rosa at the shelter! I will bring Puzzlemore page 39 news next month about these two lovely dogs and how the cat enclosure is now filling up too! Angie
