All events must be pre-booked online via the Barn website. Until all covid precautions are lifted, ticket-holders will be contacted prior to each events with the latest information and advice about covid restrictions. Divorced, Beheaded, Died : An Audience with Henry VIII - Wednesday 30 June, 7pm Come back to 1544, when Winterbourne Barn was a mere 200 years old, and meet the Henry VIII as he halts his Royal Progress around the country to afford his subjects the opportunity of an audience with their sovereign Lord and King! A very entertaining evening for ages 12+. Tickets must be pre-booked online via the Barn website and will go on sale shortly. Medieval Scentscapes - Tuesday 6th July, 7pm Smelling the Divine and the Diabolical in the Middle Ages! In our modern deodorised age we may not realise that for medieval people the sense of smell was central to interpreting the world around them. Bad smells were associated with disease. Spices and scented goods spoke of new lands and cultures. Smells were important in negotiating good and evil, and in finding one’s place in the hierarchy of the spirit. This talk will be accompanied by scents for each ticket holder, and the audience is encouraged to smell along, if they wish. Tickets £7.50 must be pre-booked online. Tea and Tours The popular tea and tours will resume at 2pm on the first Thursday afternoon of each month from 3rd June. Tickets are £5. Enjoy a short talk about the history of the Medieval Barn, with a cup of tea, and then explore the recently renovated West Barn and the rest of the site. With all the difficulties the country has faced, WILLS and POWERS OF ATTORNEY may be something you have put off. But now is a good time to make sure you have up to date protection. Georgina Causon from Simpson Solicitors says “Wills and Powers of Attorney are the most important legal documents most people ever put in place: • A well written Will makes sure your wishes are followed if you died unexpectedly. It let’s you protect those you love, as it is the only way you get to decide how to provide for those you leave behind.

Georgina Causon

• A well prepared Power of Attorney makes sure your wishes are followed if you were seriously injured or ill and needed to have someone appointed that you trust to act on your behalf and speak up for you.” Local experts Simpson Solicitors offer our readers the opportunity to have professionally prepared documentation put in place. Drafted to meet your particular needs and family circumstances. Chipping Sodbury Festival 2021 The stage is set for the return of the Chipping Sodbury Festival this summer with many of the events and activities based on this year's theme of 'Heroes'. From Asterix to Zatara, window displays in the Town, and the floats at the Lion’s Carnival on Saturday 26 June, will all be challenged to celebrate their favourite Heroes. We challenge you to don your cape or crown and join in all the festivities. We all know that some super heroes don’t wear capes and during the last twelve months a different kind of hero has emerged, nationally and also from within our own communities. This could be an opportunity for you to highlight the contribution they have made to lives during the past year. However you choose to join in during June and July you’ll find some of your all-time favourites. 'Spot the Error’ trail, Quiz Night, Bike Rides and an evening of wine tasting will all run alongside free talks, taster sessionsfor Yoga and Bridge and new on-line events for 2021. Let’s make it one to remember! Full details of all the events and activities can be found at Spiderman’s home page on the World Wide Web(!) or – www.chippingsodburyfestival.com and on the Chipping Sodbury Festival Facebook page. “I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” –Superman See page 24 for more information

A 60 Year Celebration! Paul and Wendy Whittle married on the 3rd June 1961. This year they are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with their family and closest friends. In their 60 years of marriage they have accomplished a number of amazing things for themselves and their community. Paul and Wendy have two daughters, Louise and Jayne. They also have five grandchildren, all of whom they have proudly supported. For years Paul and Wendy have been integral parts within the Chipping Sodbury community, holding various roles on the council. Both Paul and Wendy were voted to be mayor of Chipping Sodbury for several years, along with holding the position of council chair for nearly 20 years. They have both been incredibly dedicated to their jobs, even ensuring to attend meetings in heavy December snow. Not only this, but they have taken massive strides to show their community how much they care. Paul and Wendy have protected the St John’s Way field from overdevelopment, helped ensure an increase in funding into local schools and supported local charities. In 2013 Paul and Wendy opened the Waitrose store on Barnhill Quarry and it is still flourishing to this day, sitting just a short walk from the High Street where visitors to the store will be able to support smaller local businesses. They also helped to push through funds to open the Chipping Sodbury Sports Hall in 2010, giving the secondary school new facilities and also creating a space for out of school hours clubs for the young and old alike. Wendy has dedicated a number of years to the Sodbury Players and is an honorary member. Paul has given an incredible amount of time and support to Chipping Sodbury Rugby and Football clubs. With the relaxing of COVID restrictions Paul and Wendy are glad to be able to celebrate 60 years of happiness with the people they love. They and their loved ones are both looking forward to the celebration of their Diamond Anniversary and the family their marriage has built around them. By Charlotte Whittle-Gray

www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lou-elliott1 Wendy and Paul’s family and friends are supporting one of the couple’s favourite charities, Great Western Air Ambulance in celebration of their long and happy marriage.

TONY HARCOURT 1949 – 2021 A POPULAR AND WELL KNOWN OSTEOPATH OF HORSE STREET, CHIPPING SODBURY by Andrew Webb Co Chair of the Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce. Tony lived and worked in the town and nearby areas for some 40 years. Residents and business folk were shocked to hear Tony died suddenly and unexpectedly in January (2021). Tony came to live and work in this area with his wife, Jean, in 1979. He worked with Clifford Davies in Wotton-under-Edge and also in Pierrepont Street, Bath. In 1994 he opened his practice in Horse Street, Chipping Sodbury. He was a man with many interests including Archery being also a skilled Fletcher. Tony had a great love of history and was a medieval re-enactor for many years. He also enjoyed carpentry and timber framing in particular. He had an allotment where he excelled in growing vegetables, parsnips being his speciality. Professionally he was a much respected man who had a real skill in dealing with the aches and pains of his many patients. Tony retired at the end of 2020 and spent the first and sadly the last year of retirement in lockdown. Jean has received many messages and letters of condolence which have been very much appreciated. Jean thinks there are many people who knew Tony but are still unaware of his death. Due to the current restrictions in terms of meeting with people the “Chipping Sodbury Grapevine” has been somewhat slowed down. Andrew

Make the most of your garden this summer with help from Tom at Ground Care & Fence Repair This month is always a busy one and a great time to enjoy the warmer weather and the benefits of being outside in the garden. Whether pressure washing paths, pruning hedges, fixing or renewing a fence or making the lawns and borders tidy, Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Is there a Photo :http://bengillett.co.uk/ neglected patch of garden that can be brought back into use and enjoyed this summer? I am always pleased to give a quote and am now taking bookings for July, August and September I was very pleased to receive two very positive testimonials recently which I have included here this month: TESTIMONIAL ONE: GROUND CARE ‘We required 7 large conifer trees to be taken out of the rear Garden. Tom was very responsive when I contacted him, turned up exactly when he said he’s would ti quite and start the job. He completed the Job the a very high standard within in two and a half days. He cleared all rubbish and left the garden clean and tidy. Tom is very knowledgeable and was happy to give advice and tips on the up keep of our Garden, and future projects. I would highly recommend him for any Garden work.’ TESTIMONIAL TWO: GARDEN FENCING ‘We can highly recommend Tom. He responds quickly to communications, gave useful advice and turned up when he said he would. He is thoroughly professional with an eye for detail and knows his trade. The work ( new fencing and gate) was completed to an excellent standard, using top quality materials and on budget.’ Thank you again Tom!’ Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using

social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom
