COMMUNITY NEWS Tell your GP you look after someone A carer is someone who provides support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. All the care they give is unpaid. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, even more people are looking after someone at home, and many do not know that help is out there. Local charity, Carers Support Centre works with GP practices across Bristol and South Gloucestershire to make sure carers are recognised and supported at their GP practice. The charity urges anyone who looks after someone at home to register as a carer with their GP practice. Tim Poole, Chief Executive of Carers Support Centre says: “If you are helping to look after someone, it is vitally important to tell your GP. Register yourself as a carer at your GP practice or medical centre. As a carer you are entitled to a free flu vaccination. Your practice will also provide you with information about local help for carers, and they may be able to offer you more flexible appointments. Remember your GP practice is there for you and the person you care for. By letting them know what your needs are, you can help them to help you.” Carers Support Centre provides arrange of practical services including a confidential telephone helpline and online help, carers emergency card, one-to-one support, telephone counselling and befriending, training and employment support. The charity is releasing a new short film to reach out to carers at local GP practices. Look out for it on your GP practice website, and follow Carers Support Centre @carersbsg on Twitter to stay up-to-date. If you look after someone at home, call your GP practice to register as a carer. The practice will add you to their carers register and send you a carer’s information pack.

Jim Elsworth—A Tribute by David Hardill, Community Heritage Officer Jim Elsworth passed away on New Year‟s Eve. He was one of the most influential figures in local history in the last 50 years and a great servant to the Chipping Sodbury community during that time. Jim was involved in so many facets of Chipping Sodbury life it will be difficult to do him justice in a relatively short tribute. A Sodbury Man As I write in 2021 Jim Elsworth had been chair of the Sodbury and District Historical Society since 1979, chair of the Town Lands Charity since the 1980s and an integral part of the Sodbury Festival since the mid 1980s plus a string of other community roles. Yet, it was not obvious that Jim would be so involved in everything. Jim Elsworth came to Sodbury with his wife Mary in 1967. Like so many other newcomers, he came to work on the Concorde programme in the 1960s. The family settled in the Elms Estate in Sodbury, but Jim spent long hours working at BAC in Filton and it took a few years before he became more involved in local, community life. A Community Man Jim became a Sodbury man through and through. Although he was always aware of being a “newcomer” compared to the longstanding families around the town, he was at the heart of Sodbury life. Alongside his history work, he was Chairman of the ancient Town Lands Charity, which was responsible for much of the land and property around Sodbury and a source of grants and support for the local community. Jim was also on the committee of the renowned Sodbury Festival, which has run from the 1980s and for which Jim has delivered a talk every year during that time at the Town Hall. Indeed, if there was a history or community project or festival in the Town Jim would be there to offer practical support and advice and probably a talk and walk. Mr Sodbury Arguably more than anything else, Jim became the voice of Sodbury History and the “go to” historian for local enquiries. Jim‟s emergence on the Sodbury scene began with Sodbury Historical Society. Although other local historians, notably Percy Couzens were involved in setting up the society, it was Jim who stepped forward as Chairman of the organisation, blissfully unaware that he would occupy this post for over 40 years. History Society Although Jim had a full-time job at Filton, he was still able to devote so much time and energy to developing Sodbury Historical Society building it up from a core of enthusiasts, to being the largest history group in the area. Over the decades, the society has regularly attracted over 100 attendees to the Friday night lectures. Much of this success has been down to offering popular speakers and sustaining the base of followers through word of mouth. Lecturer Supreme As Chairman, Jim not only provided interesting speakers for society members, but also brought Sodbury History to life for scores of local groups and individuals. Initially inspired by a gift of a selection of historic slides by the family of the local GP, Dr Casson, Jim developed a prodigious collection of local images, taken as, or transferred to, slides which he took round to local parish halls, pubs and community halls for over 35 years. He subsequently transferred these slides to Powerpoint and, more recently, during the coronavirus restrictions, he gave his „‟Changing Sodbury‟‟ presentations as Zoom talks. He calculated that over 40 years, he was able to chalk up over 1000 talks in the area. Sodbury History was the passion; there were myriad permutations of „‟Changing Sodbury‟‟ as the collection grew (eventually reaching over 4,000 slides) often focusing on local shops, houses, or places while the US Army in Sodbury and Sodbury Charities were other popular themes. Every year since the mid-1980s, Jim has delighted audiences with his annual talk for the Chipping Sodbury Festival. As well as lectures, Jim was always ready and available to a history walks around Sodbury and elsewhere in the area. .....cont‟d

Guide and Help From my own personal view, Jim was both a great source of local knowledge and stories and could always be relied upon for good common sense. Throughout 20 years of Yate Heritage Centre, Jim sat on the management committee from 2000 to 2011 and answered scores of my history enquiries I passed onto him. He was also generous in loaning parts of the Sodbury history collection for our exhibitions and collaborating in numerous history projects the last of which was the „‟Sodbury 800‟‟ exhibition project and event in 2018. It is difficult to quantify how much someone like Jim Elsworth will be missed. He remained a popular local man to the end always ready to have a chat in the High Street and whenever possible, always prepared to offer a history talk or walk for any local group approaching him. From my own experience, having Jim do a talk always added extra “bums on seats”. His easy charm, great knowledge and humour will be remembered for years to come.

Jim’s family, Mary, Jo and Sue, write … Jim took great pleasure in researching and writing the articles for The Boundary magazine. He loved the fact that they were enjoyed by so many people as, for him, history was not just for the historians - it was for everybody. He was devoted to Sodbury in so many ways; through his work with the Town Lands Charity, the Sodbury Festival, the Historical Society and, of course, his popular walks and talks. He cared deeply about the town, and its history, and was always very pleased when others were interested too. We are absolutely delighted to hear that the second volume of Sodbury Tales, drawn from his Boundary articles, will be published later in the year. It will be a very fitting tribute to a very special man, and much loved husband, father and grandfather.

My own tribute, Angie I didn‟t know Jim before I started the magazine in 2008 and even so, Jim very generously said he would write „a few articles‟. 12 years later and I know from readers that his regular page became a must-read every month. So knowledgeable, with a wry sense of humour and the ability to convey the fascinating and long history of this area. The first book of Jim‟s articles, called „Sodbury Tales‟ (pictured on the front cover) was published in 2013 and was a sell-out. I look forward to compiling more of Jim‟s writing this year into book number 2, which, in a gesture of Jim‟s thoughtfulness, will be raising funds for his favourite Charity, Guide Dogs For The Blind. David has highlighted above the many groups that Jim helped over the years, I would like to add the Chamber of Commerce to that long list. I am sure readers will wish to join me in sending Jim‟s family our heartfelt condolences. Jim was a true gentleman and a valued friend who will always be remembered with the greatest affection. “One day I will be like her”... and now I am me! Throughout my life friends and family would always say “you look great, you don‟t need to lose weight, you are worrying about nothing” . But I always knew I was the “larger” friend, the one who didn‟t dress up for big events, the one who didn‟t want to have photo‟s taken but would happily take the photo‟s for people. I was shy, with drawn, insecure and uncomfortable in my own skin even though I didn‟t come across that way to others. The ultimate turning point for me was going on holiday to Turkey and friends showing me the pictures they had taken on an exciting day trip. I was horrified and heartbroken, I just wanted to crawl away back to my hotel room and hide. Was that really me in the photo? It certainly wasn‟t the me I wanted to be. The whole holiday I saw ladies on the beach and in restaurants beaming with confidence and wearing clothes I loved but would never dream of wearing. Thinking that It wasn‟t fair I indulged deeper into food for comfort, more than I had ever really realised. Why could they do it but I couldn‟t? I felt like I was trapped in a body I was stuck with - until I found slimming world in 2019. After a quick search online for weight loss groups near me, slimming world popped up. I spontaneously grabbed my bag and headed on down as quickly as I could. Even though I knew it was what I wanted, walking through the doors of group was the hardest thing to do. To admit to myself I needed help to lose weight took everything I had within myself and I was embarrassed. I took a deep breath, and opened the doors, not knowing what to expect. The immediate atmosphere was so warming, like a safety net that just scoops you up as soon as you step in. Everyone was smiling and talking with each other while in the queue to weigh. The consultant came up to me with the biggest smile on her face and welcomed me. Going through the plan with my consultant and I quickly realised nothing was off limits! Amazed by the things you could eat and that I had the freedom to choose filled me with relief. I am not a fan of fish and knowing they were not going to make me eat it made me feel so much more relaxed! I swiftly went on to read through recipes books on the tablet, the app and website for idea‟s and I found myself excited to lose weight! I left feeling refreshed with a tight grip of my member pack to my chest and a list as long as my arm for new recieps to try for the week thanks to the other members in the group and for the first time in a long time I felt relief. I had been handed my life jacket from the sea of upset, comfort eating and self doubt. I lost 5lb in my first week! The feeling of achievement was amazing. I sat down to group, cup of tea in hand, everyone was so supportive and celebrated with me. It gave me a sense of belonging and the determination to carry on and the rest is history and I have never looked back. What I love is all the meals always look so colourful. I still enjoy a chocolate biscuit from time to time but what amazed me was the fact I could still eat pasta!. I have a BIG love of pasta dishes that include butternut squash mac „n‟ cheese, pizza pasta bake and carbonara . I also enjoy chilli con carne with rice, lasagne with chips (yes chips!)and garlic bread and honestly the list could go on! Simple changes make a huge difference to not only your health but also the way you feel and I am proof. Everyone at Slimming World wants to see you succeed and to have that support is just what my insecure self needed. My consultant wouldn‟t just support you on weigh day though, she would sometimes text mid week to check how I was and lift my spirits. On more than one occasion my consultant Bonny would text me just as I was about to put a chocolate biscuit in my mouth, I swear she had a sixth sense or something?!. It‟s that kind of support that got me to where I am today and I am so very grateful. Since joining Slimming world I have achieved more than I ever thought possible. I have never been big into exercise, in school or in my adult life, but I found myself wanting to do something - so I started small, walking round the block to get fresh air, cycling to the shop instead of driving and hikes in the woods at my own pace with family and friends. Then I did the unthinkable. I walked 10 miles with my best friend for St Peters Hospice. The biggest smile hit my face at the 10 mile sign and it was all thanks to slimming world giving me the confidence to do it that I achieved it. I found myself not being able to contain my excitement at group. When I told them they were amazed, mainly because they knew I hated exercise but also because I enjoyed my sleep but were so proud of me, and I for the first time in a long time I felt proud of myself. To this day I still attend my group, I still hike in the woods and I still treat myself to a choccy biscuit because I can! Slimming world gives you the reason and opportunity to choose! No more breathlessness running up the stair, reduced pain in my knee‟s, not so tired all the time but 10X more confidence and energised. I no longer look at ladies in the street wishing to be” her” because I finally am me! Trust me when I say weight loss doesn‟t need to be strict, boring and impersonal, not with Slimming World. I‟ve enjoyed my journey so much that I want to share and inspire others to feel the same so am becoming a Slimming World Consultant myself and will be looking after members on a Tuesday evening at Yate Academy from 26th January 2021. Why not come along or get in touch if you‟d like to know more.

Bucking the trend in the High Street, two new shops to open soon in Wotton

This last year has presented its challenges to their businesses in the same way that the Coronavirus has impacted most of us. However, Kate and Paul from Wotton Farm Shop have not wasted this quieter time. Instead, they have been busy - renovating the old Tenovus shop on Wotton High Street, sourcing products and developing plans. Their gift shop, Clarences, is relocating to this larger premises. Taking a positive step that looks forward to brighter days and a return to normality, they are launching a new venture for Wotton High Street, Feast from the Farm. Feast from the Farm will offer customers shopping opportunities unique for the area.  An eco-friendly refill station, offering a wide range of produce, eliminating packaging and waste.  Support boxes – delicious, healthy meals, cooked in the Farm Shops kitchen, approved by nutritionists, delivered weekly to homes and care homes in Wotton and the surrounding villages. What an amazing help for families who can not look after older relatives in these difficult times, or for people who are currently unable to easily access shops or would simply like to eat something different.  In the shop itself, delicious food, cooked in the Farm Shop kitchen, for those days when time has slipped away and the convenience of a healthy ready-made meal is a perfect solution for busy lives. Feast from the Farm will be opening in mid-March in the original Clarences shop. Follow progress on facebook @feastfromthefarm and on Instagram @Clarenceandthefarm

Make the most of your garden with help from

Tom at Ground Care & Fence Repair

The start of the year is a great time to take a fresh look at your garden and make plans to maximise your use and enjoyment.. Whether pressure washing paths, pruning hedges, fixing a fence or making the lawns and borders tidy before the nights draw in Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Many of my clients book me in for a Seasonal tidy up and we are also having many more requests to replace fencing damaged by the wild winter weather.

Photo :http://bengillett.co.uk/

Ground Care & Fence Repair evolved after I realised that with every fence built comes an understanding of the ground you work with and thus the grounds you work within. For many years as well as learning the art of fencing I was also privy to many beautiful estates and local gardens whereby I would be asked to build a raised bed, strim a hedge or mow a lawn. One skill very much compliments the other. This led me to my dream of going it alone and providing a service whereby I could do both grounds maintenance as well as fencing. With a young family on the way I realised that now was the time to take that leap and start my own business! Since starting my business four years ago I now have a regular client base and a wealth of brilliant suppliers. When I finish a day’s work I always feel proud of how far the business has come in a short period of time. One of the elements to the success of the business is making sure that each client from their initial enquiry to the invoicing stage feels 110% looked after. I may work in an ‘outdoor’ trade but that does not mean one should offer any less customer service. In fact if anything I think this and my passion for doing the best possible job for my clients is what has led us to this point. I can now also offer pressure washing as an additional service. Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom

YACHT CLUB MOURNS LOSS OF PAST COMMODORE BARRY ANSELL The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club has lost one of its most stalwart of Yachties, Barry Ansell, who recently passed to the great yacht club above, having succumbed to the dreadful Covid19 virus. Barry (pictured) served the CSYC over many years, making his way through the ranks to become Commodore in 2013-4. Barry‟s year as Commodore coincided with the 30th anniversary of the founding of the CSYC, and Barry presided over a packed black-tie anniversary ball at The Town Hall complete with a 25-piece swing band! Another highlight was the weekend away in Portsmouth, during which we toured Portsmouth Dockyard, the Marie Rose, and HMS Victory, and during the weekend, were entertained to lunch at The Royal Albert Yacht Club. On completing his year in office, Barry was elevated to The Chipping Sodbury House of Lords, where he took the title of Lord Bournemouth, acknowledging the south coast town where he was born and spent his younger years, and played football for Bournemouth AFC youth team level. Away from the CSYC, Barry took a full part in life in Chipping Sodbury, where he served the local Conservatives for many years, becoming a Vice President, and was also a Past Master of Sodbury Vale Lodge. A larger than life figure, Barry was known in the CSYC as “Big Barry” for obvious physical reasons. His character was no doubt formed by many years of service in the RAF, and in particular, the Falklands war, where he served in combat for his country. Barry loved the CSYC, and was never as proud as when he was Commodore, and he is pictured with the Yachties on his appointment in April 2013, leading from the front as ever! The CSYC mourns the loss of such an irreplaceable, big figure. Happy sailing Bazzer! Bunny

Animal Rescue with Jutta Shelter in Crete

Jutta shelter rescues and takes care of around 100 abused, abandoned stray dogs and cats. It also feeds and provides medical care to stray animals in Ierapetra. It is run by its founder, Ioannis, pictured left, who has been involved in animal welfare for over 20 years. The shelter was originally in 2 sites, but it had to be downsized to the current site as it could not afford to run two shelters and provide care to an ever increasing number of animals in need. It receives no financial help from the state and it relies solely on donations. The shelter’s dream is to refurbish the derelict house, creating rooms for elderly, special needs animals, an area for new arrivals and a room for volunteers. Some of the animals, like Aftakias pictured right, , have been here for years. He was a hunter’s dog, abandoned in the mountains to die. Close to death from starvation when rescued. He was brought to the shelter and nursed back to health with special food. The dogs are grouped in small numbers and live in large outdoor enclosures, where they can run and play; safe and well fed. If they are not adopted, we are committed to keeping them safe and happy for life. A lot of them arrive ill, starved, abused, neglected and scared of humans. They all have a sad past. With a lot of love and patience, they are slowly healed and given the chance of living a beautiful life! https://www.gofundme.com/f/jutta-shelter-animal-hostel? fbclid=IwAR2Lu51m6dc0ThGQ4vC5P695CucKsDCeS8ix5KfkrPwOqhCptB9QGVKG_k https://www.youtube.com/c/JuttaShelter https://www.facebook.com/Jutta.Shelter.non.profit

Pictured above left is Valentina who is a volunteer at the shelter and every day she looks after many stray cats in her town. I’ve been following the shelter for a little while and they are doing great works, including the building of a large cat shelter so that the strays can be rehomed away from the busy streets. Some of the animals that need help are in a very bad way but it is great to see the care and love that Ioannis and Valentina provide to turn their lives around. Angie

COMMUNITY NEWS

Laptops and Tablets Needed! Yate Rotary Club steps up the appeal! It has been much publicised in the media in the last few weeks, that many of our school children are unable to access their online lessons, either to learn or to submit their work, or to conduct research on the internet, because they have no computer at home. Our schools are doing a fantastic job, somehow managing to teach the children of key workers who have to be in school, and at the same time, providing a curriculum online for the children who are home-schooling. There must be many people in our community who have recently upgraded their home computers, or indeed their office computers, and now have unused laptops or tablets. If you have an unused laptop which you would like to donate to a school for use by a child without access to the internet, please get in touch with Yate Rotary Club. We are working with the BBC Computers for Schools campaign, and with Business2Schools, a national charity enabling and promoting a network of donors and schools. We can collect your device from you, and have the expertise within our Rotary Club to be able to wipe it clean. Then we can pass it to a local school to have the correct programs loaded, and the school will identify a child or older student who needs it. If you can offer a laptop or tablet, please get in touch via the website: www.yaterotaryclub.co.uk or telephone Marian Gilpin on 01454 321323. Sodbury Town Council initiates Climate Group. Sodbury Town Council has formed a Climate Group with a view to finding ways to meet the challenges faced by our communities as a result of global warming. The earthâ€&#x;s temperature has increased by 3% in the last 50 years, and it has been largely caused by the release of too much carbon dioxide and methane into the air, creating a sort of blanket over the atmosphere, and starting a whole chain of events which break down our ecosystems, change our weather patterns and threaten the existence of many living creatures. The Climate Group is setting out to identify things which all of us can do to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and to promote energy-saving ideas. Initial plans include the promotion of renewable energy installations (solar panels. Air source heat pumps, windmills) reduction of waste, planting of many more trees, reducing our reliance on cars and avoiding plastic packaging. If anyone in the Sodbury area is interested in joining this Climate Group, please contact Sodbury Town Council. Email: enquiries@sodburytowncouncil.gov.uk
