COMMUNITY NEWS Information Boards in situ at Kingsgate Park Friends of Kingsgate Park and Yate Town Council are pleased to announce we now have information boards placed in the park. One depicts the wildfowl that use our lake and the other shows some of the many trees there, which can be identified by their bark and leaves. After talking to visitors at our last Yate Rocks Festival 2018 and users to our park we were asked to have information for users to recognise the wildfowl and trees. We set about raising money to provide these and received grants from Area Wide Grants of South Gloucestershire, profits from the sale of bird seed to feed the wildfowl on the lake. Many thanks to those who helped us to provide the information for these boards, the late Harry Lane who provided the history and map of the park, to Paul Hulbert, Tim Fairhead, Sue Bruten and David Hardill of Yate Heritage Centre. We have received feedback that this has been a good idea and have received further requests for other information boards!

Carers supporting carers

COMMUNITY NEWS

Do you look after someone? Or perhaps you know someone who does? Families often provide crucial care for someone who couldn’t manage without their help. If you look after someone, you might find yourself going round and round in circles fighting for services. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and confused, particularly if you are new to caring, or your caring situation has changed. Everyone’s caring situation is different, but sometimes it can help to talk to someone who has been in a similar situation. You may be new to caring and simply don’t know what support is available. Or perhaps something has changed and you are having to tackle a new set of challenges, from incontinence, dementia, or balancing caring with work. Local charity, Carers Support Centre, is offering a service to link carers up with a trained mentor who is also a carer (or former carer) in a similar caring situation. Your mentor will share their own experience and help you understand what support is available. You could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. To find out more or for an informal chat about mentoring, contact Judy Porter at Carers Support Centre: JudyP@carerssupportcentre.org.uk 07591 401 129 www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk

All About Mi Raise Money For Breast Cancer With restrictions still meaning that beauty salons are unable to open until mid April, MarieLouise Coster, owner of All About Mi in Chipping Sodbury, decided to put March to good use by running 100km for Breast Cancer Now to raise money for the charity. ‘I am by no means a natural runner’ said Marie-Louise, ‘and I am unlikely to ever run again! But this is a cause very close to me heart. I am not sure there is anyone in the country whose life has not been affected by cancer, either through their own experience or that of a loved one. I lost my Nan to breast cancer 21 years ago and have spent the last 21 years raising money and volunteering for various cancer charities. I had my own scare a couple of years after my daughter was born, which thankfully was just a scare. But I have had many clients who have battled breast cancer and are fighting it now and I wanted to do something positive as they have all inspired me so much with their courage and strength.’ If you would like to support Marie-Louise's fund raiser, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marie-louise-coster-100k

Trashman Clearance — Welcome to the Treasure Dome! Since returning from Australia and setting up Trashman Clearance the

world has been thrown into a global pandemic and as a new business we were faced with challenges that we certainly had not planned for when we set out. Our clearance, downsizing and decluttering work has gone from strength to strength but with all non essential retail closed for pretty much most of the year since March 2020 we had few outlets and needed to rethink how we were selling.

In late 2020 we lost our business storage and suddenly had to find alternative premises which certainly wasn't in the plan, however they say that when one door closes another one opens and after a few disappointments fate took us to Wickwar and the Old Brewery building on Station Road. We fell in love with the premises and its potential for us to open a direct to the customer retail outlet and so the idea for Trashman Treasures was born. We are now in the process of fitting out and in line with our goals to reduce waste and operate sustainably we are using reclaimed materials and discarded paint for all renovations to create what we believe will be a truly individual retail experience. We are planning to open to customers on Friday 16th April subject to lifting of restrictions and there will be an ever changing stock of pre-loved Vintage, mid century and modern treasures for sale. We think we are something different and hope our customers will too - come along and see for yourself - Welcome to the Treasure Dome! Opening times will be Friday - Monday 9am - 5pm (open other days by appointment). Please contact Ian (07432 568193) or Sue ( 07432 568216) or email ian@trashmanclearance.com. Coronation Street Actress’s Arrest for Kidnapping Gran from Care Home.

That is a shocking headline no one would have predicted a year ago. So much has changed. It is not just masks and Zoom. Many families have seen the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney (known as LPAs). The problem was that the actress’s 97 year old grandmother did not have a Health and Welfare LPA in place. So the family had not been able to see her for a year. Leaving her distressed. If she had an LPA when she had her mental capacity, she could have appointed her daughter to speak up for her and make key decisions that she would want; in this particular case they felt it was best for her to be cared for at home (as her daughter was a retired nurse). The news story highlighted that without LPAs in place families can feel shut out and powerless to help those they love. The Government is concerned that families do not have LPAs in place and has launched a campaign to raise awareness together with research showing:

Georgina Causon

72% of people were wrong. They thought their husband or wife or next of kin would have final say on medical treatment decisions if they lost mental capacity. Instead they need to be appointed in a Health & Welfare LPA. Lockdowns and Shielding have also highlighted the problem that people who cannot get out should put a Property & Finance LPA in place to formally authorise those they trust to manage a bank account, collect a pension or pay bills. 73% of people were wrong. They thought if they had a joint bank account and one of them could not make their own decisions, the other could legally make decisions for them both. Instead it takes a Property and Finance LPA to give the legal authority needed. Legal Advisor Georgina Causon says “The advisors at Simpson Solicitors in Chipping Sodbury have been designated as key workers, and so we remain open to help put these essential documents in place. We offer Telephone Meetings, Zoom, Office Meeting or Home Visits – whatever suits you best. Just call 01454 322 722 to book a FREE review meeting. Don’t leave it too late! Animal Rescue with Jutta Shelter in Crete In February and March magazines we featured Jutta Shelter, which rescues and takes care of around 100 abused, abandoned stray dogs and cats on the Island of Crete.. The Shelter also feeds and provides medical care to stray animals in Lerapetra. It is run by its founder, Ioannis, pictured left, who has been involved in animal welfare for over 20 years. Shelter volunteer Valentina, pictured, also helps feed and look after local strays. Some have already been safely rehomed in the newly constructed cat enclosure. If you use Youtube, the Shelter has their own channel featuring rescue videos and also videos of the day to day care of the animals. www.youtube.com/c/JuttaShelter

For an animal lover it is hard to see abandoned and injured animals but once they are in the care of Ioannis and Valentina and the local vet they are given the best chance of recovery and a safe and happy life. The pandemic has restricted the opportunity for volunteers and potential adopters to visit so the Shelter’s supporters have been offering to sponsor a dog or a cat to help with the huge running costs, as the Shelter relies solely on donations. I am very pleased to sponsor Rosa (top) and Rena, Rosa’s mother, Tika was already pregnant when rescued from an illegal puppy breeder. She gave birth to this very cute girl, and they live together by the house amongst other small doggy friends. (The breeder was later fined and faced court proceedings).

ROSA

Rena was named by one of the Shelter followers, after the famous Greek movie star Rena Vlachopoulou. She and her puppies lived in squalid conditions in a derelict house with an elderly hunter that was taken to hospital. By the time Ioannis was RENA called to save them, she had been with no food for a week and nursing. She was skin and bones and very scared. She is a very good mother, her puppies are growing up and she is more confident and friendly now. There are videos of Rena’s rescue on the Shelter channel which Ioannis and Valentina carried out under very difficult conditions. Over the next few weeks I am compiling a digital cookbook with recipes from Shelter supporters around the world, which we will be sending out online as a free download to publicise the Shelter. Do you have a favourite easy bake recipe you would like to share? Please email theboundaryonline@gmail.com All contributions very welcome. COMMUNITY NEWS Purple for Polio Some wonderful displays of purple crocuses have sprung up in both Yate and Chipping Sodbury. These have been planted by Rotary Clubs not only here, but all over the country, to remind us that the vicious disease of polio is still endemic in two countries of the world, and while it still exists, the danger of a resurgence is ever present. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system. Our children are vaccinated against polio as a matter of course, and now very few people in UK know anything about the disease. Rotary International is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and in 35 years we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Now we fight to make sure that vaccinations worldwide continue……

The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club and the Yellow Submarine One of our members recently came across a photo of two captured German U boats, moored outside of the Bristol Hippodrome, dating from 1918. It’s true, the camera doesn’t lie (see photo). This goes back to the time when that part of the River Frome in Bristol was still open. Any photo of the mighty River Frome still open is enough to make any Yachtie quite emotional, as it remains our aim to see the River Frome opened up through to Bristol Docks, enabling us to sail from Chipping Sodbury directly to the Bristol Channel. It reminded me of the time that the Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club built a Yellow Submarine, which was first unveiled in the annual parade during carnival week. On this occasion, the Yellow Submarine was joined on the float by the Yate Rocks Lighthouse (pictured), which the club had built the year before. The appearance of the Yellow Submarine in the carnival parade was very successful, and the watching crowds loved it. After the carnival, the Yachties returned the Yellow Submarine to its dry dock. Then something amazing happened, as, seemingly under its own steam, the Yellow Submarine surfaced at Tanhouse Lake, Yate Rocks, the Yachties receiving a call alerting them to the sudden appearance of it at Tanhouse! Some Yachties are pictured with the submarine, all amazed at how the submarine made it from Chipping Sodbury to Tanhouse Lake without being seen. The explanation expressed was that it had travelled through some little known culverts, seeking out the deep waters of Tanhouse. The legend of the Yellow Submarine lives on, for having returned it to its dry dock in Chipping Sodbury, the next day, Chief Marine Engineer Bruce Hosie and some Yachties were about to carry out some maintenance, when, to their shock, they found that the Yellow Submarine had disappeared, and despite a search of the culverts and underground springs, it has never been seen since. It is suspected that the Yellow Submarine made its way from Chipping Sodbury, down the River Frome, through Frampton Cotterell, going underground at Cabot Circus, resurfacing at Quay Steps at The Centre. It then headed down the River Avon, into the Bristol Channel from where it made its way to its spiritual home of Liverpool, where it probably remains, today! Bunny Groves, Secretary General.
