Easter Bonnet COMMUNITY Competition Winners NEWS 2021 For the second year running the Friends of Kingsgate Park and Yate Town Council held a virtual Easter Bonnet Competition on social media. The Friends of Kingsgate advised this year, 62 entries were received, which is almost double last year’s entries. How wonderful is that!’ The Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Bonnet competition normally held in Kingsgate Park on Easter Monday was sadly cancelled once again this year due to Covid 19. The Mayor of Yate, Councillor Karl Tomasin and representatives of the Friends of Kingsgate Park had a really hard job deciding who should receive 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, however, after much thought and many cups of tea this is their decision:

COMMUNITY NEWS Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury—End Plastic Soup Plastic soup is all the plastic waste that is ending up in the oceans of the world. It comes from the plastic we throw away on the street, in rivers, parks, fishing nets that are discarded, from washing synthetic clothing, brushing our teeth etc. All these different types of plastic combine to form the plastic soup in the seas. Weathering, sunlight and wave action break down large pieces into small bits. This causes serious pollution and because plastic is non-biodegradable, the plastic soup kills many marine animals. The plastic is degenerating into ever smaller pieces to the point that we can't see it anymore. Microplastics are entering our food chain, the fish we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe. EndPlasticSoup is a global initiative which started in Amsterdam in 2018 fishing for plastic in the canals. Rotary is seeking to make a difference internationally by creating awareness, promoting alternatives and influencing decision makers. We have set a goal of trying to End Plastic Soup by 2050 (as described in the article here https://www.rotarygbi.org/magazine/february-march-2021/ living-in-the-plastic-age) Bristol Budgerigar Society hold meetings at Little Stoke Community Hall, Little Stoke Lane, Little Stoke, Dodington Allotment Bristol BS34 6HR. Trashman Clearance — Welcome to the Treasure Dome! Since returning from Australia and setting up Trashman Clearance the

world has been thrown into a global pandemic and as a new business we were faced with challenges that we certainly had not planned for when we set out. Our clearance, downsizing and decluttering work has gone from strength to strength but with all non essential retail closed for pretty much most of the year since March 2020 we had few outlets and needed to rethink how we were selling.

In late 2020 we lost our business storage and suddenly had to find alternative premises which certainly wasn't in the plan, however they say that when one door closes another one opens and after a few disappointments fate took us to Wickwar and the Old Brewery building on Station Road. We fell in love with the premises and its potential for us to open a direct to the customer retail outlet and so the idea for Trashman Treasures was born. In line with our goals to reduce waste and operate sustainably we have used reclaimed materials and discarded paint for all renovations to create what we believe will be a truly individual retail experience. We are now open to customers (subject to covid safe guidance) and there will be an ever changing stock of pre-loved Vintage, mid century and modern treasures for sale. We think we are something different and hope our customers will too - come along and see for yourself Welcome to the Treasure Dome! Opening times will be Friday-Saturday-SundayMonday 9am - 5pm (open other days by appointment). Please contact Ian (07432 568193) or Sue ( 07432 568216) or email ian@trashmanclearance.com. Kate Garraway's problems with no power of attorney in place

Kate Garraway from Good Morning Britain has shown it really is time to explode the myth that Lasting Powers of Attorney are just for the elderly. Known as LPAs, adults of all ages should have the protection of them. Like many young couples, Kate and her husband Derek Draper did not have LPAs in place. This was a mistake they regret. No LPAs has significantly added to the terrible year they have experienced when Derek became seriously ill and hospitalised battling the effects of coronavirus. “We can only speak to the account holder” is an annoying message we have all heard. Kate found that where Derek was the named person but had lost his mental capacity it became a huge problem. Bank and savings accounts were frozen as he had not set up an LPA to authorise Kate to access them if he became ill. Kate explained “One of the practical problems is the car is entirely in Derek’s name, the insurance is in Derek’s name, a lot of our bank accounts. I can’t get access to things because legally I haven’t got power of attorney.”

Georgina Causon

Georgina Causon at Simpson Solicitors agrees. “Kate Garraway’s story shows us that however young and healthy you feel, it is really important to plan ahead just in case you are unfortunate enough to lose your capacity to look after your finances and to make important life decisions.” What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? A Finance LPA is a powerful legal document where you can appoint people you trust to pay your bills and manage your financial affairs if you are too unwell to do this yourself. There is also a separate Health LPA to allow those you trust to speak up on your behalf and make the decisions you would want in relation to the treatment you receive and where you are cared for. By planning ahead, you can take control and choose who you trust to make important decisions about your health, care, property and money on your behalf - in case you became ill or injured and needed their support. Next steps All adults should set up LPAs whilst they are well and can understand what they are signing. Simpson Solicitors offer a complete service guiding you through setting up these powerful legal documents. This covers advice to you on the different options of how to appoint those you trust, drafting the LPAs with extra clauses for your particular circumstances, acting as your Certificate Provider (that you have the mental capacity to sign), answering questions from those you appoint, dealing with the Court registration process and then providing certified copies and guidance to those you have appointed. Just call 01454 322 722 to book a FREE review meeting with local experts Simpson Solicitors that cover the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area to find our more. Latest News from ‘Fundraising for...Sponsored by James Ball Cars Ltd’ (Sam, Ami and Tracey are 3 local mums hoping to help as many people and organisations this year as possible, you can follow this group on facebook.) We are sponsored by James Ball Cars Ltd. James (pictured below) has been fantastic in supporting us. Rich of RichMcD Photography has been fantastic in documenting our journey. We are hugely grateful for their support. . The group started last December with Walking with the Wounded, we did a charity walk which raised over £400 for ex-military suffering from mental health issues. We then raised £230 in January for Maggies cancer centres. In February we did a 100 mile walk for Refuge Domestic Violence, for which we raised nearly £400. March saw us raise £680 for The Bourne Family Project in Kingswood Bristol, who provide counselling and therapy for children and adults. In April we have been supporting Hedgehog Rescue Chipping Sodbury and have raised £220 to date. In May we will be supporting North Bristol Food Bank, Suicide Prevention Bristol and a homeless charity which is as yet undecided - we would love for the general public to get in touch if they know of one which could do with our help For the rest of the year we will be looking for charities, or organisations that would like some support as they have suffered terribly due to the impact of covid 19. We are always happy to have suggestions on new ideas of people to help and how we can help. We will also be supporting any local businesses as they open back up to increase awareness of what they do. If anyone would like help with that please get in contact. All in all, we are there to help, we ask nothing in return, we aren't funded. We have help with uniform costs from our fabulous sponsor Mr James Ball but everything else we fund ourselves. We are continuing this year as I am raising a young family, Ami is currently on furlough from her work as a health care assistant at Southmead hospital and Tracey is currently working weekends so we have time to give something back. Myself and Ami have a charity background, myself having worked as mobile retail manager for the fantastic Break Charity, who Ami also worked for and we absolutely love helping if we can. You will and probably already have seen us dressed up as we go about raising awareness of the charities and o r g a n i s a t i o n s . We are sometimes bananas, ladies with curlers, brides, superheros, all sorts! We love doing what we do and we want to say thank you for all your support from the general public. We love seeing you all whilst out and about and invite you all to follow our fundraising antics on Facebook at ‘Fundraising for...’ Ami, Tracey & Sam xxx

A Traditional Cotswold Stone Pub in a Historic Village

The Beaufort has just started on the government’s “Road out of Lockdown”, and like their stated aim, we want to get back to normal as soon and as safely as possible. As per the guidance, and until the 17th May, the pub is limited to offering table service to drinkers in the garden whilst still offering our Fish Friday and local beer takeaway service. After 17th May, and all being well, we will then be able to open indoors and resume our food offering which will include our popular Sunday Lunches. Bookings can be made through the usual channels or via our Facebook page (facebook.com/beaufortarmshawkesbury) or by emailing elliott@beaufortarms.com. Please note that the pub phone is not always monitored while we are limited to outdoor service only. Cask ale is available Thursday to Sunday, weather and availability permitting - this is to ensure the beer stays fresh in these early days. Cask ales will be available as usual once indoor service resumes.

Mark, Fiona, Elliott, Lin and the rest of the Beaufort team. All hours subject to change, please check our website at www.beaufortarms.com or our Beaufort Arms Facebook page

The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club and the Chipping Sodbury House of Lords The CSYC would, last month, have celebrated St Georges Day, on 23rd April, but of course, the lockdown has prevented that happening. This is a big day in the Yachtie calendar, with lunch or dinner, and Yachties in full uniform and displaying medals. A sitting of The Chipping Sodbury House of Lords is then convened. The Chipping Sodbury House of Lords dates back many years, in fact close to the club’s founding in 1983.One of our members then was John Cope, who was for many years, MP for this area. John was first knighted, then became Lord Cope, bestowed by the House of Lords in London. The Club thought it a good idea to extend this to have other members elevated as Lords, and petitioned for permission to elect members as Lords, but our application was rejected, after which the club formed The Chipping Sodbury House of Lords, which has been creating both Knights of the Realm of Chipping Sodbury and Lordships ever since. It is on St Georges Day that the Chipping Sodbury House of Lords is usually convened, and with the power vested in him by the full membership, The Commodore creates Knights and Lords, with newer members eligible for their knighthood, and the outgoing Commodore being elevated to the Chipping Sodbury House of Lords. In the top photo, from the CSYC archive, Dave Thomas, Mark Woodward, Mike Dimery and Dave Newboult receive their knighthoods, and Rod Harris is created a Lord by Commodore Roger Penfold (see second photo), taking the title of Lord Wodney Abbot of the Ale. In the third picture, the late, great, Barry Ansell is seen elevating Eric Woolley to Lord Bitton, and in the final photo, Barry Ansell is pictured with Gary King after appointing him Sir Gary of Portsmouth. The Club are looking forward to the easing of lockdown restrictions to enable the Chipping Sodbury House of Lords to meet once again, and resume its supreme governance in Chipping Sodbury! Bunny Groves, Secretary General.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Chipping Sodbury Festival 2021 The stage is set for the return of the Chipping Sodbury Festival this summer with many of the events and activities based on this year's theme of 'Heroes'. From Asterix to Zatara, window displays in the Town, and the floats at the Lion’s Carnival on Saturday 26 June, will all be challenged to celebrate their favourite Heroes. We challenge you to don your cape or crown and join in all the festivities. We all know that some super heroes don’t wear capes and during the last twelve months a different kind of hero has emerged, nationally and also from within our own communities. This could be an opportunity for you to highlight the contribution they have made to lives during the past year. However you choose to join in during May, June and July you’ll find some of your all-time favourites. 'Spot the Error’ trail, Quiz Night, Bike Rides and an evening of wine tasting will all run alongside free talks, taster sessionsfor Yoga and Bridge and new on-line events for 2021. Let’s make it one to remember! Full details of all the events and activities can be found at Spiderman’s home page on the World Wide Web(!) or – www.chippingsodburyfestival.com and on the Chipping Sodbury Festival Facebook page. “I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” –Superman

One million pieces of PPE delivered to frontline nurses across the South West An innovative ‘PPE Click & Collect Service’ organised by SPAR South West has been shortlisted for the 2021 Business Charity Awards ‘Best Covid-19 Partnership’ having now delivered over 1 million pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Marie Curie Nurses working on the frontline during the pandemic. Marie Curie Nurses have relied on PPE to continue delivering vital care to dying people, with and without coronavirus, throughout the pandemic. SPAR South West has helped the charity to deliver the vast quantities of vital PPE needed to their frontline staff by transporting PPE around the region and enabling nursing staff to pick it up from their local SPAR store. Across the South West, Marie Curie Nurses use an average of 21,000 pieces of PPE a week. Thanks to the generosity of South West SPAR wholesaler Appleby Westward, Marie Curie Nurses have been able to collect their PPE, including face masks, aprons, gloves, visors, goggles, and hand sanitiser from their local SPAR store. Since May 2020:

 

over 1 million pieces of vital PPE have been delivered safely to Marie Curie Nurses More than 45,000 day and night nursing shifts have been able to take place for over

2,400 patients

Over 130,000 nursing hours have been protected thanks to SPAR’s support.

Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant Liz Marshall from the South West Nursing Service has worked for the charity for 11 years and says: “It’s a privilege to care for people at the end of life and support families across the South West, especially during these difficult times. PPE has been vital for us to continue working during the pandemic. Before the help of SPAR South West, we were depending on our volunteers and our own nurses to count out the equipment needed and drive it miles. Now, I can pop into my local SPAR store and pick it up. I’ve even been able to do a bit of shopping at the same time.” “At a time when coronavirus has had, and continues to have, a devastating impact on our fundraising, this initiative has helped the charity save vital funds. So, on behalf of the nursing service, I would like to say a big thank-you to SPAR for making this possible.” Nick Kenworthy, Marketing Director for Appleby Westward, said: “We feel incredibly privileged to be partnered with Marie Curie and to have played a small part in helping their community nurses continue such essential care during this difficult time. Thank you to our independent retailers and company owned stores for making this possible.”
