COMMUNITY NEWS First ever Chipping Sodbury Christmas Tree Trail. In these strange times Christmas this year will probably be very different for many of us and Sodbury in Bloom thought it would be nice to brighten things up for people a bit so, we came up with the idea of a Christmas Tree Trail. We thought that, in addition to the big Town Council big Christmas trees, it would be a good idea to have a few more round the town to add some more colour and light. Working with the Chamber of Commerce we have invited businesses and residents to put a Christmas tree outside their doors or in their windows and the response has been amazing. There will be over fifty trees starting at the Parade and ending in Horse Street. We thought it would also be fun to have a competition so we suggested a theme of ‘Christmas Songs & Stories’ and anyone who does the trail can vote for their favourite tree. The trail will start on the 4th December and finish on 2 nd January 2021. You will be able to download the trail map from the Sodbury in Bloom Facebook page and the My Sodbury Website as well as the Chamber of Commerce site.We hope that lots of people will want to follow the trail (in a socially distanced way of course) and enjoy the lights and colour.

COMMUNITY NEWS CARVING OF TREE IN KINGSGATE PARK Kingsgate Park Yate has just unveiled the new work of art by Andy O’Neill, Wild Wood Carver who lives in Yate. Users of the park were asked how they would like to see the tree carved and Friends of Kingsgate Park received many suggestions. From these Andy worked with the tree as to how it lent itself to certain images and has produced a magnificent work of art. andyoneill_woodcarver During Storm Eleanor in January 2018 the tree was damaged by the storms and sadly had to be cut back for the safety of everyone. Friends of Kingsgate Park decided that this would be an opportunity to create an amazing work of art in the park, depicting many of the animals that either live or visit there. Friends of Kingsgate Park would like to thank the many organisations that contributed to make this possible: Waitrose – Community Matters Tesco – Bags of Help South Gloucestershire Council Member Awarded Funding Chipping Sodbury Lions Yate and District Rotary Club We also used money from the Duck/Swan feed we pack and sell at the Vintage Birdcage Cakery. Photos right: Calendar Cover and RichMcD with the Calendar outside The Card Boutique Yate Rotary Club donates £1,500 to improve disabled access Chipping Sodbury Rugby Football Club (CSRFC) has been fund-raising since August to construct a wheelchair-friendly pathway from the car park, across the front of the Clubhouse and onward to connect with the existing public footpath along the eastern side of the pitch. On Wednesday 3 November, the President of Yate Rotary Club, Richard Gilpin, presented a magnificent cheque for £1,500 from Yate and District Rotary Club, to help towards the footpath appeal. Recently one of the rugby club members, Mr Lloyd Williams, sustained serious injuries in a motorbike accident, and will be one of the first to benefit from this new pathway. His son Ed Williams received the cheque on behalf of CSRFC, and expressed not only the club’s appreciation, but also grateful thanks from his father who will soon be able to watch matches from the sidelines, as before. Jon Nutt RFC Chairman of Youth Teams said, ‘The whole project will cost £6,000 and this generous donation will go a long way towards achieving that total. We are absolutely thrilled with this amazing contribution.’ Richard Gilpin, President of Yate Rotary Club said, ‘We have had a long association with Chipping Sodbury RFC. Every summer our South Cotswold Beer Festival is held on the RFC practice pitch, the club facilities are made available for campers and the rugby players help by lifting some 80 beer barrels onto the stillages ready for sale. We are delighted to be able to assist with this very worthwhile project.’ It is anticipated that sufficient funds will have been raised for work to start on the pathway early in the New Year.

Enjoying your garden safely this winter with help from Tom at Ground Care & Fence Repair December is a good month to make everything shipshape before winter storms arrive. Whether pressure washing paths, pruning hedges, fixing a fence or making the lawns and borders tidy as the nights draw in, Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Many of my clients book me in for a Seasonal tidy up and December is no exception.

Photo :http://bengillett.co.uk/

Ground Care & Fence Repair evolved after I realised that with every fence built comes an understanding of the ground you work with and thus the grounds you work within. For many years as well as learning the art of fencing I was also privy to many beautiful estates and local gardens whereby I would be asked to build a raised bed, strim a hedge or mow a lawn. One skill very much compliments the other. This led me to my dream of going it alone and providing a service whereby I could do both grounds maintenance as well as fencing. With a young family on the way I realised that now was the time to take that leap and start my own business! Since starting my business three years ago I now have a regular client base and a wealth of brilliant suppliers. When I finish a day’s work I always feel proud of how far the business has come in a short period of time. One of the elements to the success of the business is making sure that each client from their initial enquiry to the invoicing stage feels 110% looked after. I may work in an ‘outdoor’ trade but that does not mean one should offer any less customer service. In fact if anything I think this and my passion for doing the best possible job for my clients is what has led us to this point. I can now also offer pressure washing as an additional service. Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom

Somewhere after the Rainbow! After 6 months without the friendships, challenges and encouragement of the school environment, part of the recovery curriculum at North Road School has been the designing and execution of this beautiful mosaic. The Arts Society Severn Valley (TASSV) and Yate Rotary Club have had a long association with North Road School and we have been delighted to assist, once again, in funding this splendid mosaic. It was the brainchild of Head Teacher, Sarah Stillie, and with the expert help of TomatoJack Arts it was designed to represent the school’s six vital values, its enthusiasm for learning, its respect for wildlife and its acceptance of and respect for diversity. ’We are all different, but we all fit together brilliantly’Chair of TASSV and Rotarian Linda Griffith worked with the school to bring together the funding required. The children all took part in the construction of the mosaic, and together they have produced this wonderful daily reminder of Hope, Thankfulness and Aspiration. Carers Support Centre shares winter wellbeing tips for carers This winter will e a challenging one, and no one is feeling the effects of the pandemic more than family carers. A carer is someone who provides support to family or friends who could not manage without their help. 3 in 5 people will be carers at some point in their lives. They could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. All the care they give is unpaid. Local charity, Carers Support Centre is supporting carers through this dreadful pandemic. The charity understands how incredibly difficult it is for carers right now. Covid-19 continues to have a monumental impact on carers, not only because of the increased amount of care that many are having to provide, but because of the far-reaching effect that this is having on their relationships, their mental and physical health, their paid work and their emotional wellbeing. In addition, worrying about the winter is causing stress and anxiety for carers, many of whom have had no break from caring for many months. If you are looking after someone, you will likely be struggling to take time for yourself. And winter can be an especially difficult time. When your time is already stretched, the shorter, darker days can make it feel impossible to do something for yourself. However, it is important to do things to take care of yourself too. Carers Support Centre’s wellbeing team share some ideas of what carers can do in a short space of time to improve wellbeing. While taking small breaks can’t solve everything, they can help to lift your mood, calm a busy mind or distract you from checking the news too often: Have a cup of tea Listen to some music Read the newspaper or a magazine Take a hot bath or shower Phone a friend Do a crossword or puzzle Try some relaxation exercises Think about something you are looking forward to Carers Support Centre’s Wellbeing Service gives carers emotional support, ‘me time’ and aims to help you become more resilient. The service is free, confidential and is delivered by phone and online. It is for all adult carers across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. You can choose between 3 telephone services: Counselling – a confidential space to talk with a professional counsellor. Mentoring – are you new to caring, or tackling a new set of challenges? Get advice and understanding from another carer. Befriending – open to anyone who would like a chat. Their befrienders are available and eager to connect. Local carer Penny whole-heartedly recommends befriending to all carers: “Alan is so wonderful to chat to. I can talk openly and freely without fear of criticism. It’s great to have someone outside of the family to talk to. I feel I can be more honest with Alan than I can with my friends and family. Anyone who is unsure should just give it a go. I’m so glad I gave it a try.” The wellbeing service is open to anyone who looks after someone and would like to talk to someone. Whatever your caring situation, Carers Support Centre welcomes your call. Call CarersLine on 0117 965 2200. You will need to leave a message with your name and telephone number and someone from Carers Support Centre will call you back as soon as they can during CarersLine opening hours: MondayFri 10-1 and Monday to Thurs 2-4. www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk
