COMMUNITY NEWS CARVING OF TREE IN KINGSGATE PARK Kingsgate Park Yate has just unveiled the new work of art by Andy O’Neill, Wild Wood Carver who lives in Yate. Users of the park were asked how they would like to see the tree carved and Friends of Kingsgate Park received many suggestions. From these Andy worked with the tree as to how it lent itself to certain images and has produced a magnificent work of art. andyoneill_woodcarver During Storm Eleanor in January 2018 the tree was damaged by the storms and sadly had to be cut back for the safety of everyone. Friends of Kingsgate Park decided that this would be an opportunity to create an amazing work of art in the park, depicting many of the animals that either live or visit there. Friends of Kingsgate Park would like to thank the many organisations that contributed to make this possible: Waitrose – Community Matters Tesco – Bags of Help South Gloucestershire Council Member Awarded Funding Chipping Sodbury Lions Yate and District Rotary Club We also used money from the Duck/Swan feed we pack and sell at the Vintage Birdcage Cakery. News from Team Building with BITE We were recently contracted for a build for three rescued Barbary macaques at Jimmy’s Farm, as part of their ‘Autumn at Jimmy’s Farm’ TV show. Our project focused on creating a climbing structure, with just three of us completing this mammoth task in five days. Adoa, the male, and Ndidi were rescued from the pet trade, while Sisi was rescued from a run -down zoo. We knew they were likely to have physical restrictions and behavioural issues, so wanted to ensure features that provided comfort, as well as opportunities for physical therapy as they move around. The public want to see these amazing animals in action too, so making sure the design allows the animals to feel happy and comfortable, while showing off their incredible abilities, is a big part of what we do. Feeders funded by our Patreon supporters were built into the design on the lower levels of all the major structures, which is important to keep them moving around, but is also important for any social species as, while they may like to hang out together, they also need the chance to get away from each other, too, like any family group. With the site being quite exposed, the other design focus was providing shelter from the elements. Built-in wind breaks in different orientations mean even when the weather is bad,

there’s plenty of outside options. This also creates spaces for the animals to tuck themselves away if the choose, both from each other and the public. This might seem counter-intuitive in a zoo setting, but actually when the animals know they can disappear any time they like, they are more likely to choose to be out in full view.

Mark and Chris The Boundary is pleased to be a Patron of TBWB and it’s great to share news of these projects. There is an opportunity for new Patrons and also a Corporate sponsor, the website is www.teambuildingwithbite.com Angie

Community News: Yate Rotary Club ‘Tree of Light’

The Tree of Light at the entrance to the Shopping Centre by the petrol station was lit up on 4 th December and it’s beautiful! Take a trip down to the Shopping Centre after dark and you might just catch it before the lights are taken down in mid-January. The lights were switched on by Rocco Carboni, aged 9, from St Paul’s Catholic Primary School – an honour gained by winning first place in a Yate schools colouring competition. The switching on ceremony was conducted by Rotary President, Richard Gilpin, with special guests, Cllr Karl Tomasin, Mayor of Yate; Mr Andrew Lowrey, Manager of the Shopping Centre; and Mr Liam Rinn, of Cotswold Homes, one of Rotary’s generous supporters. Marian Gilpin, co-ordinator of Tree of Light Project, said ‘It was disappointing that we had to restrict our guests to only 6 because of the Covid-19 rules, but we are very grateful to the Year 8 Girls’ Choir from Yate Academy who recorded some Christmas songs in advance for us. Next year we hope they will come and sing live.’ This project has given us all an opportunity to remember a loved one, or to celebrate something special, by sponsoring a light on the tree for just £6 – and the names of all our loved ones or special events are listed in the Book of Celebration on the Yate Rotary Club website: www.yaterotaryclub.co.uk Many thanks to all who have already contributed. Your donations will go towards the many charities and community projects supported by Rotary every year.

This January make a difference to those you love

After the year we have all had, it has highlighted how the most important thing in our lives is the people we love and care about. 2020 and the threat of COVID hanging over us all, has also highlighted how important it is to have our legal affairs in order – to make a big difference to those we most love. It is only by having an up to date Will and Powers of Attorney in place, that if you became seriously ill you can make sure your wishes are followed.

John and Michelle Baden-Daintree

An out of date Will or no Will can mean those you love suffer the upset of the inheritance going to the wrong people or being wasted on legal disputes or paying care home fees or inheritance tax - that could have been avoided. Not having up to date Lasting Powers of Attorney can mean those you trust (who would most want to support you) are left feeling helpless and unable to make sure you received the support you would want. Lasting Powers of Attorney mean they can help you with decisions on where you live, what medical care you receive and managing you money and paying your bills – if you became too ill to do this yourself. Our local experts, Simpson Solicitors, will ensure this is all done properly for you. They can help you make sure your wishes are clear and legally valid, to support those you intended; preventing family fallout. If you have young or vulnerable members of your family, the Simpson’s service covers advice on how best to provide future provision for them in their particular circumstances. As well as advice for parents on appointing guardians to raise their children. The service starts with a free advice meeting. Either face to face in the office, or if getting in is difficult for you it can be at your home, or by telephone or Zoom. Always in a COVID safe way. The award winning team (Law Firm of the Year 2020) also give you the promise of No Hidden Costs and include a free supported signing meeting and free life-long storage of your documents in their clear fixed prices. Michelle Baden-Daintree, says “Our service will let you make a big difference to those you love. The free meeting doesn’t just cover the Will. We will guide you through all the issues you should think about to prevent problems for your family. You will not feel rushed, as we take as long as you need” John Baden-Daintree, says “Book your free January meeting now by calling our friendly team on 01454 322 722 and get 20% off our already competitive prices. That way you’ll be remembered for all the right reasons and not for leaving a legal mess for your family to sort out”.

Hedgehog news by Tracey, Hedgehog Rescue Chipping Sodbury By this stage of the winter Hedgehogs will be getting ready to hibernate although this is ‘weather dependant’. This is not a quiet time for Hedgehog Rescue Chipping Sodbury. Currently, we are admitting many local adult hedgehogs, as well as baby hedgehogs, who are starving and dehydrated as well as unwell through a heavy internal parasite burden and through injuries. So, If you see a baby hedgehog or any hedgehog out in the day it is very likely that they will need rescuing so contact your local wildlife centre/ or the British Hedgehog Preservation society for advice. Rearing baby hedgehogs is not for the inexperienced they are notoriously hard to care for and go in to rapid decline very quickly. A number of fatalities in many rescues around the UK this year has been the result of well-meaning attempts to care for hedgehogs by the finder causing an often-sure death from not receiving the correct treatment. This year we have also had many hedgehogs from the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area who have been injured by discarded litter and other garden hazards. These tend to be horrific injuries. So how can you help aid the survival of hedgehogs and other wildlife? The provision of food and water can be a life saver at any time of the year but particularly now. Think carefully how you dispose of litter. In your gardens, please make a quick check for hedgehogs before using any garden tools. Avoid the use of poisons and traps and look for natural alternatives. Look to provide access to your garden. There are many easy ways to do this through making hedgehog highways. A hedgehog in your garden is a privilege and something to be treasured and enjoyed. If everyone follows these few simple ideas which really is a necessity, there is no reason why we can’t stop the decline of the nation’s favourite mammal. For further information or if you wish to help support the rescue with a donation please check out our website www.hedgehogrescuechippingsodbury.co.uk

Somewhere after the Rainbow! After 6 months without the friendships, challenges and encouragement of the school environment, part of the recovery curriculum at North Road School has been the designing and execution of this beautiful mosaic. The Arts Society Severn Valley (TASSV) and Yate Rotary Club have had a long association with North Road School and we have been delighted to assist, once again, in funding this splendid mosaic. It was the brainchild of Head Teacher, Sarah Stillie, and with the expert help of TomatoJack Arts it was designed to represent the school’s six vital values, its enthusiasm for learning, its respect for wildlife and its acceptance of and respect for diversity. ’We are all different, but we all fit together brilliantly’Chair of TASSV and Rotarian Linda Griffith worked with the school to bring together the funding required. The children all took part in the construction of the mosaic, and together they have produced this wonderful daily reminder of Hope, Thankfulness and Aspiration. Carers Support Centre shares winter wellbeing tips for carers This winter will e a challenging one, and no one is feeling the effects of the pandemic more than family carers. A carer is someone who provides support to family or friends who could not manage without their help. 3 in 5 people will be carers at some point in their lives. They could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. All the care they give is unpaid. Local charity, Carers Support Centre is supporting carers through this dreadful pandemic. The charity understands how incredibly difficult it is for carers right now. Covid-19 continues to have a monumental impact on carers, not only because of the increased amount of care that many are having to provide, but because of the far-reaching effect that this is having on their relationships, their mental and physical health, their paid work and their emotional wellbeing. In addition, worrying about the winter is causing stress and anxiety for carers, many of whom have had no break from caring for many months. If you are looking after someone, you will likely be struggling to take time for yourself. And winter can be an especially difficult time. When your time is already stretched, the shorter, darker days can make it feel impossible to do something for yourself. However, it is important to do things to take care of yourself too. Carers Support Centre’s wellbeing team share some ideas of what carers can do in a short space of time to improve wellbeing. While taking small breaks can’t solve everything, they can help to lift your mood, calm a busy mind or distract you from checking the news too often: Have a cup of tea Listen to some music Read the newspaper or a magazine Take a hot bath or shower Phone a friend Do a crossword or puzzle Try some relaxation exercises Think about something you are looking forward to Carers Support Centre’s Wellbeing Service gives carers emotional support, ‘me time’ and aims to help you become more resilient. The service is free, confidential and is delivered by phone and online. It is for all adult carers across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. You can choose between 3 telephone services: Counselling – a confidential space to talk with a professional counsellor. Mentoring – are you new to caring, or tackling a new set of challenges? Get advice and understanding from another carer. Befriending – open to anyone who would like a chat. Their befrienders are available and eager to connect. Local carer Penny whole-heartedly recommends befriending to all carers: “Alan is so wonderful to chat to. I can talk openly and freely without fear of criticism. It’s great to have someone outside of the family to talk to. I feel I can be more honest with Alan than I can with my friends and family. Anyone who is unsure should just give it a go. I’m so glad I gave it a try.” The wellbeing service is open to anyone who looks after someone and would like to talk to someone. Whatever your caring situation, Carers Support Centre welcomes your call. Call CarersLine on 0117 965 2200. You will need to leave a message with your name and telephone number and someone from Carers Support Centre will call you back as soon as they can during CarersLine opening hours: MondayFri 10-1 and Monday to Thurs 2-4. www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk

Co-op supports breaks for local young carers Local charity, Carers Support Centre, is delighted to have been selected by the Co-op local community fund this year. This gives Co-op members the chance to support breaks for young carers just by shopping. Simply select Carers Support Centre as your cause and, for every £1 you spend at any Co-op store, 2p will go to back to you and 2p is donated to young carers breaks. Despite Covid-19 restrictions, Carers Support Centre are determined that young carers still get a break. The charity recently delivered a range of online group events for young carers, in partnership with local businesses and charities. Young carers who attended said: “I felt proud of myself because I cooked a meal for my mum. She loved it.” “It was fun, we played lots of games and started to write a play.” “I loved the dance and I thought it was so creative.” Caring is a huge responsibility that should only ever be expected of an adult. Young carers do a fantastic job of caring for someone at home, but it has a big impact on a young life. Young carers struggle to keep up with schoolwork and suffer with stress, anxiety and depression. This is why breaks mean so much to young carers. They give them the chance to take some muchneeded time away from their caring role and socialise, relax and just enjoy being kids for a while. Joss Tagg, Young Carers Service Manager of Carers Support Centre, explains: “Having a break increases young carers’ resilience, so they can continue caring for sick and vulnerable family members in a robust and safe way. Joining in with activities helps their wellbeing and creates lasting friendships and peer support. Activities provide a fun and entertaining break, as well as life skills and training. Activities also decrease anxiety, loneliness and isolation.” You can help young carers get more breaks, simply by getting a Co-op membership card and choosing Carers Support Centre as your cause. Becoming a Co-op member is easy. Join and choose Carers Support Centre here: https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/49881

Detox your garden and grounds in 2021 with Ground Care & Fence Repair. January is a good month to think about your garden structure and to check that fencing is strong in order to withstand winter storms. Ground Care & Fence Repair is on hand to help you do this. Many of my clients book me in for a new year tidy up. Paths in particular can be hazardous due to old leaves and algae, I can pressure wash these to ensure they are safe.

Ground Care & Fence Repair evolved after I realised that with every fence built comes an understanding of the ground you work with and thus the grounds you work within. For many years as well as learning the art of fencing I was also privy to many beautiful estates and local gardens whereby I would be asked to build a raised bed, strim a hedge or mow a lawn. One skill very much compliments the other. This led me to my dream of going it alone and providing a service whereby I could do both grounds maintenance as well as fencing. With a young family on the way I realised that now was the time to take that leap and start my own business! Since starting my business three years ago I now have a regular client base and a wealth of brilliant suppliers. When I finish a day’s work I always feel proud of how far the business has come in a short period of time. One of the elements to the success of the business is making sure that each client from their initial enquiry to the invoicing stage feels 110% looked after. I may work in an ‘outdoor’ trade but that does not mean one should offer any less customer service. In fact if anything I think this and my passion for doing the best possible job for my clients is what has led us to this point. I can now also offer pressure washing as an additional service. Covid19 update: During this current pandemic I will always put the client’s safety first, using social distancing, hand sanitiser , gloves etc. to maintain safe working practices and being sensitive to the needs of each new client. Take care Tom
