FIRST GRADUATES SET NEW TRADITIONS Thursday 21 October 2021 was the beginning of new traditions at St James’ Anglican School as its first cohort of Year 12 students enjoyed a day full of valedictory celebrations. Students had the opportunity to speak candidly about their time at St James’ at a breakfast, sharing stories and memorable events which shaped their time at school. These stories trickled into the speeches made at the Whole School Assembly held in the Djinda Sports Centre. Students presented themselves in front of the School and were recognised for their contribution and the path they so aptly paved for future graduating classes. Following the whole School Assembly, students from Kindy to Year 11 created a Guard of Honour through the School. The path - commencing in the Senior School building, winding through the Science blocks, up through the Trade Centre, along the verandah of the Junior School and concluding in the Kindy playground, back to where it all began – will be painted to signify the journey that the first cohort took. A daily reminder to the younger students that they too will walk this path one day.
The twenty-three Year 12 students completed a NAIDOC inspired artwork with handprints and inspirational quotes. This artwork is on display in the Leavers Hub. Head of Year Ryan Marlow spoke about the first graduating cohort and the mark that each one of the twenty-three students had left not only on him but the School as a whole. “We are very sad to see them leave, but proud they will take our teachings and spirit as they find their way in the world. They will always be our 23,” Mr Marlow said. The evening festivities commenced with a Eucharist in the Chapel where students were presented with their St James’ Class of 2021 sashes. These orange sashes included the names of each member of the Class of 2021 and will become a tradition for the Year 12s to be presented with on their Valedictory evening celebrations.
The Kindy students presented the Year 12s with a small gift, which will now become a tradition each year for the youngest members of the ‘Orange Army’. ASC News 15
