The launch of the Anglican Schools Commission Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2020 marked a significant milestone in the ASC’s 35-year existence, with a firm commitment of working towards reconciliation.

The RAP process was initially activated by an ‘On Country’ experience, led by Noongar Elder Professor Len Collard, along the banks of Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) in 2017.

Earlier this month, Professor Collard led another ASC Indigenous Engagement day to Wedjemup (Rottnest Island) which was attended by the ASC CEO The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, ASC School Principals, School Council Chairs, and ASC senior staff.

Attendees took part in a living history bidi walk guided by Professor Collard and his wife Lisa. The experience sought to offer a deeper understanding of the history of the island and conditions and life experienced by the Aboriginal people imprisoned there. Professor Collard painted a vivid picture of what life would have been like for those who were incarcerated on the island.

A minute of silence was held in the Chapel allowing the attendees to contemplate the history of the island. Before leaving the Chapel, Reverend Laurence offered a prayer for reconciliation.

The tour of Wedjemup ended with a smoking ceremony before boarding a ferry back to Walyalup (Fremantle).

The ASC is committed to continued shared cultural experiences with a view to deeper engagement on its reconciliation journey.
