EDITORIAL

Chers amis de l’Alliance Française,

Dear friends of Alliance Française... and the French language.

Toute l’équipe se joint à moi pour vous accueillir à nouveau en 2018 dans votre Alliance Française et vous souhaiter le meilleur pour cette nouvelle année.

The whole team joins me to welcome you again in 2018 at your Alliance Française and wish you the best for this New Year.

It begins with the reception of Denis Plassard, French choreographer and dancer, well known on the French scenes. Director of Compagnie Propos, he likes to mix artistic styles and techniques. He has collaborated in the past with classical musicians and magicians! He will spend a few days in Dar es Salaam for a creative work associating the dancers of Muda Africa, our faithful partner. The evening at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam promises to be rhythmic and tasty. Come and follow Denis Plassard’s footsteps on Tuesday January 16th from 7pm.

This beginning of the year also marks the renewal of our partnership with the famous and indispensable Sauti Za Busara Festival that will take place in Zanzibar from February 8 to 11, 2018. Two French groups are scheduled this year to offer you a discovery of Maloya, traditional music of Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. On February 8th, we will be hosting a before festival concert: a great appetite for those who will be attending the festival. Many other events are proposed at the beginning of the year at the Alliance, be curious!

Frédéric TIBERTI

Director

I wish you all, a sweet and spicy year, to meet the French language, art and culture.

See you soon at your Alliance! 7

Music & dance

TUE 16th JAN 2018

KITCHEN OPEN FROM 12 - 9 PM MONDAY TO SATURDAY

Music & Dance by Compagnie Propos (France) After a professional ballet and contemporary dance training at the CNSMD in Lyon, Denis Plassard danced for 2 seasons with the « Place Blanche » Company, Josette Baïz. In 1990, the urge to choreograph his own pieces pushed him to create his first solo, “Propos”, which later gave its name to the company he founded the following year. From his first steps as a choreographer, Denis Plassard tried to create dynamic bonds between texts and gesture and has explored the relationship between words and movement. In collaboration with Muda Africa, the choreographer Denis Plassard will conduct workshops and performance with students from MUDA Africa. His first performance in Tanzania will be at Alliance Française on Tuesday January 16th where he will perform both his Solo and with students from Muda Africa. Other performances will be in Arusha and Zanzibar respectively.

“Rainy in Nights”

by ABDULLA KHAMIS OMAR (DULLAH WISE) Born in Zanzibar on December 12, 1990, Abdullah is one of the upcoming local artists on the islands inspired by the cosmopolitan heritage. Besides working as an artist, Abdullah also works as an art therapist at the occupational Health Department of the Kidongo Chekundu Mental Hospital in Zanzibar. Abdullah uses acrylics and palette knife on canvas, illustrating the local environment which expresses everyday life featuring aspects of contemporary urban and rural life. By using his impressionist style and the way of applying colors on canvas, Abdullah works hard to create paintings that speak both to himself and to others about the beauty that exists around us. My inspiration come from umbrella dance is one of well known dance from Zanzibar. It can be performing either during the day or night. There is a jock in Zanzibar during the rain season, every one caring umbrella and although is not a dance is just ordinary day during the rain season, and the jock is they all performing umbrella dance but not dance.

It’s been four years since Sylvie‘s son Felipe was abducted by his father Pablo after their divorce. Having been let down by French officials who had succeeded in tracking them both down, only to let them escape again, Sylvie has now decided to take matters into her own hands by hiring a private detective. Pablo’s accidental death puts her back on Felipe’s track, now living with his aunt and grandmother in the Uruguayan countryside, Pablo’s home country. Mehdi, a social worker, disillusioned with his job, is moved by Sylvie’s struggle and decides to leave everything to help her. Together they set out to Uruguay in order to bring her child back to France. Once there, she realises, by being the mother, she has all rights on her son, including the right to destroy the fragile but happy balance that has been built around him.

SIMBIN PROJECT BIOGRAPHY The Simbin project was born in 2016 on the initiative of the Swiss multi-instrumentalist and producer Fred Hirschy. Since 2005, he has worked with Didier Awadi, Faada Freddy, Tumi Molekane, Fredy Massamba, etc. The particularity and strength of the Simbin project consists in mixing the kora virtuoso, Noumoucounda, and the two Swiss pioneers of the electronic and experimental music, Christophe Calpini and Pierre Audétat (the duo “Stade”). For nearly 20 years, Noumoucounda has toured and recorded with the Positive Black Soul, among the first African rap groups to play on international stages. Then Youssou N’Dour, Alpha Blondy and Stromae have joined the long list of artists who have worked with the kora player.

Les Neiges du Kilimandjaro (2010) Although having lost his job, Michel lives happily with Marie-Claire. These two have been in love for thirty years. Their children and their grandchildren fill them. They have very close friends. They are proud of their union and political struggles. This happiness will shatter with their French window in front of two young men armed and masked who hit them, tie them, tear their alliances, and escape with their credit cards... Their confusion will be all the more violent when they learn that this brutal aggression was organized by one of the young workers dismissed with Michel.

Segere Original There are not many bands whose music has been so pervasive that a new genre has been named after them. Such is the case with Young Stars’ Segere - the 2001 hit song that lent its name to both the style and also the band. Segere is especially noteworthy for its fast rhythms, directly descending from Zaramo cultural traditions. As such it has similarities with mchiriku. Whereas the latter uses a mix of Zaramo ngoma drums with a small Casio keyboard as the sole lead instrument, Segere’s sound is heavier with Tony Karama’s bass guitar taking the lead role from the msondo drum, and drummer Abdallah Ng’onda’s lively drum set propels the band to ever increasing frenzies. The ensemble sound is carried by solo guitarist Mjusi Shemboza, and marimba player Hamisi Nyamula. Boniface Kachale’s trumpet adds a beni brass flavor. Expect nothing short of a riot on the dance floor!

Zéro de conduite (version restaurée) The holidays are over and it is time for the students to return to their boarding school, a place without joy where teachers, obtuse adults, inflict severe punishments and deprive them of freedom and creativity. Four of them, punished with a “zero of conduct”, decide to rebel, with the complicity of a new supervisor, Huguet, closer to the mentality of young people than the rigid one of other adults.
