EDITORIAL

Dear friends of Alliance Française, Dear students, A new season is ending and the entire Alliance Française team is preparing to take a few days of well-deserved vacation in order to meet you again in September. The year 2018-2019 was plentiful of major events and allowed us to appreciate the wealth of Tanzanian creation in different artistic segments. Our partnerships with cultural actors or diplomatic missions also enabled Alliance Française to showcase cinematographic or visual works (Canadian film festival, press photo exhibition ...). Alliance Française has become, right through the year, as an area for meetings, debates and promotion of the global cultural actors. On my side, I spent four very wonderful years as the head of this magnificent area promoting the French language and cultures and I would like to thank all our public and private partners including the Embassy of France in Tanzania. The commitment of everyone allows Alliance Française to welcome every day, a large audience, enthusiastic to be stunned by the works presented or to widen their knowledge of the French language. For these next two months, we are proud to able to develop, in collaboration with the Goethe Institut, the exhibition project on new technologies, cinema or reading in three dimensions. We will also host an exhibition of an artist presented for the first time in Tanzania through a new partnership with the Swiss Embassy. Momar Seck, well-known internationally French-speaking artist (Senegal-Switzerland), will present some of the latest works, exhibited a few months ago in London.
Frédéric TIBERTI
Director
Before turning the page on this rich Tanzanian experience, I wish my successor success and hope that he will enjoy the projects of Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam.
Good bye! 7

Reading Machines - NEW WAYS TO EXPERIENCE READING Digital technology has eliminated the borders between disciplines and given new thought to relations between authors and readers. These new storytelling and reading territories help explore new perspectives in the realm of literary creation, hence transforming one’s relations to books, paper and digital “machines”. France stands out internationally as a result of its creative dynamism and highquality production. French authors, editors, producers and designers are today seizing the latest technology and endeavor to produce works of a new genre. The Institut Français, through its ‘‘Reading Machines’’ exhibit, will unravel a selection of works illustrating such new reading experiences that make French creation ever so rich and unique.

Mapantsula (1987) At last, a South African movie about Panic in the streets! The streets are those of the suburbs, shantytowns and shopping malls of Johannesburg, and Panic is a small-time crook who keeps his nose out of politics. The trouble is that politics touches everyone on the streets of Jo’burg, as Panic discovers when he is picked up by the police for questioning and dumped in a cell with a bunch of township militants, precisely the people he most despises and fears. White director Schmitz and black co-writer/star Mogotlane wisely leave Panic’s future to our imagination, and concentrate instead on getting inside the skin of a scuzzy but not dislikeable criminal.

THE MULT-MEDIA ART PROJECT ABOUT ALBINISM (MAPA) PRESENTS A
HOLISTIC ART EXHIBITION In Tanzania, as it is in 27 other African countries, persons with albinism are Misunderstood, disadvantaged and even attacked and killed. They often lack basic understanding of their condition and have little access to healthcare and education. For the past decade Tanzania was known around the world as a hub of witchcraft and massacre of persons with albinism (PWA). MAPA aims at using art and sports to change that negative perception and expose success stories of persons with albinism which reflect the continuing efforts by the government, civil societies, development partners and the UN in combating the atrocities against persons with albinism. Project partners: Color Mwanza, Mwanza City Council, M.W.A.N.Z.A e.V. , Tanzania Rural Health Movement, Friends of Children With Cancer and many others!

Momar Seck (Genève, Suisse) « The permeability of the artist to his environment analyzes the renewal of visions, thoughts and sensibilities that this new arrangement of materials allows. He obtained his doctorate in May 2013 at the University of Strasbourg on the theme “Appropriation of objects and recycled materials in contemporary Senegalese art”. He’s as tough as nails, after too much time in the African sun and enjoying an expatriate lifestyle while running a hotel. Safi, his fourteen-year-old daughter, is used to living with her mother and doesn’t know what to think about her loud-mouthed and useless father who has suddenly taken her away with him. Moved to a hostel in Nice, they learn to get to know each other, to be able to look each in the eye, perhaps to love each other.
