EDITORIAL 6

Chers amis de l’Alliance française, Chers étudiants,

Dear friends of Alliance Française, Dear students,

The whole team of Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam joins me to wish you a happy and prosperous year and memorable encounters. Alliance Française will remain in 2019, a cultural center open to the world, open to all and keen to promote exchanges and discoveries. As an area for the promotion of Tanzanian artists, we are also keen to organize, as often as possible, shows, exhibitions or performances of French-speaking artists from France

A bientôt dans votre Alliance Française !

The first two months of the year are just like the image of the program we intend to present to you. The proposals are diverse and of quality and cover different artistic space. The visual arts are in the spotlight with stunning exhibitions offered by our partners from the embassies of Switzerland and the Netherlands. Photography and painting will enable us to escape and question ourselves about the world around us. A talented Tanzanian artist from Bagamoyo, Amani Abeid will showcase his first solo exhibition. As long-time partners of the organizers of the Sauti za Busara Festival, we will organize this year, for the first time, a concert planned to be a teaser, the day before the opening of the main musical event of Zanzibar. Two French groups will then be performing on our stage. Coming from neighboring countries, M’toro Chamou (Mayotte) and Dago Roots (Reunion) each come from a French province of the Indian Ocean and will also be performing in the courtyard of the old fort of Zanzibar, during the Festival. And do not miss the concert of The Mafik, organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut on the occasion of the second session of the course proposed to the sound engineers of our cultural partner structures.

Frédéric TIBERTI

Director

Wishing you a happy and prosperous year 2019.

See you soon at your French Alliance and everywhere in the city!

the Universal Declaration of Human Rights “Spirou4rights” “In 2018, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Written in the aftermath of the Second World War, this founding text is just as relevant today as it was in 1948. On this occasion, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Journal SPIROU wished to carry out an exhibition “#spirou4rights”, dedicated to human rights and the Declaration. The most talented comic book writers have focused on telling this universal text, addressing serious and essential topics with humor and emotion. The exhibition “#spirou4rights”, comprising 17 panels, was created from the drawing boards from this special issue of SPIROU and presents the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights illustrated in comic strips. “

21 Nuits avec Pattie (2015) During the height of summer, Caroline, a forty-year-old Parisian and mother, arrives in a small village in the south of France. She must hastily organize the funeral of her mother, a flighty lawyer, whom she barely used to see. Caroline is welcomed by Pattie, who likes to talk about her love affairs with the local men to anyone who’ll listen. While the whole valley gets ready for the traditional mid-summer dance, Caroline’s mother’s corpse mysteriously disappears.

He reveals that Nomenaba, their father, has married Saga’s fiancée, Nogma, during Saga’s absence: “Now she’s our mother”. Saga refuses to enter the village, and settles in an abandoned hut nearby. CONTEMPORARY MAKERS BY AMANI ABEID “Contemporary makers is a book written by Robert Weil in 1973 where, he gathered different information of the then tool makers. The tittle inspired me to look at it in a different creative perspective to define the context and roles of African contemporary makers in determining continental prosperity. In my work of art, contemporary makers have widely been explored by their occupations and roles in politics, economic, religious, technological, environmental and cultural arena. I use metaphoric language articulated with beauty, sense of humor and detailed patterns merging from the background to the central subject questioning and challenging their deal of social change.“

Braguino (2017) In the middle of the Siberian taiga, 450 miles from the nearest village, live two families: the Braguines and the Kilines. Not a single road leads there. A long trip on the Ienissei River, first by boat, then by helicopter, is the only way to reach Braguino. Self-sufficient, both families live there according to their own rules and principles. In the middle of the village: a barrier. The two families refuse to speak. In the river sits an island, where another community is being built: that of the children. Free, unpredictable, wild. Stemming from the fear of the other, that of wild beasts, and the joy procured by the immensity of the forest, unravels a cruel tale in which tensions and fear give shape to the geography of an ancestral conflict.

DRUMS AND MARIMBA EXHIBITION by JEJI B In 1994 Jeji B decided to use traditional music instruments in his own music band. His main idea was to fuse traditional and modern music instruments. In his quest for a perfect and unique fusion, he realized that there were very few artists who were making traditional music instruments in Tanzania. And the few who were making them, were lacking in seriousness and creativity. To Jeji B the making of traditional music instruments reflects the dynamic creative impulses of any society. He was not satisfied with the static atmosphere surrounding the industry. He decided to make his own instruments starting with one marimba out of two old ones.

The Opening will be followed by a Concert.
