EDITORIAL 6

Chers amis de l’Alliance Française,

Dear friends of the Alliance Française,

After the customary seasonal break, we are delighted to introduce our new program of events and cultural encounters. Several exceptional events are planned before Christmas. Thus, in the framework of an African tour supported by the French Institute, we will welcome a circus acrobat-artist of who will show us bicycle goodies. It is a show of immense originality and a disconcerting virtuosity. For the occasion, we will move at the heart of the Upanga neighborhood for a better comfort of the artists and the public. Very rare in Tanzania, the contemporary circus will mark this cultural re-entry.

Plastic arts will also be privileged with the reception at the Alliance Française as part of the exhibition of the East African Art Biennale which will again bring together several artists from Tanzania and neighboring countries; The Alliance Française is, therefore in a sustainable partnership with the organizers of the Biennale and its several supporters. This year, we decided to subscribe in the monthly program of documentary. It is a highlight of cinematographic life in French media libraries. On this occasion, we are planning to project two films made by a young French filmmaker. Each presents two important elements of Tanzania’s heritage: music and the mythical MV Liemba. We invite you to come and discover these two outstanding films and meet the director who will come to the country for the occasion. Lastly, like every year at this time, the gastronomy will be privileged with two evenings dedicated to the flavors of France on the occasion of the release of the new Beaujolais. I am wishing you all good tasting.

Soyez les bienvenus à l’Alliance Française!

Welcome to Alliance Française!

TIBA

PETER MASIMA Peter Masima is a talented Gogo musician from Dodoma. He plays Marimba, locally known as ilimba and Zeze, a stringed fiddle, and is also a skilled instrument builder. He is fairly unknown on the cultural scene in Tanzania despite his enormous talent. We think it is about time that he is introduced to those who have yet to hear his “voice”. The late Hukwe Zawose who was signed to Peter Gabriels Real World Records made the music of the Wagogo popular globally. It has also been researched by a number of ethnomusicologists due to its rich and unique musical and cultural heritage.

DANCE & CIRCUS

THUR 5TH OCT 2017

FRIANDISES VÉLICYCLOPÉDIQUES BY COMPAGNIE 3.6 / 3.4 (FRANCE) Since starting the BMX and becoming champion of France and vice-champion of the World, Lille Vincent Warin has developed an artistic research through the virtuoso exploration of movements and the relationship that can exist between a man and a bicycle, between a man and a machine. He has helped make the BMX accessible to art, dance, circus and theater. The creations he develops with Cie 3.6 / 3.4 are placed at the crossroads of these disciplines: BMX, music and these new forms of circus and dance. The mix of the practice of this sport exercised at high level, confronted with an aesthetic and a poetic space are part of the stakes of its artistic approach. Its singular and atypical universe is intended for a very wide audience. Constantly looking for a more personal dimension in the work, he plays and continues to provoke the encounters, to the pleasure of the interbreeding of the arts.

International day of the girl child is held on 11th October globally, and although some progress has been made in uplifting women’s lives in Africa, much still needs to be done to overcome the cultural, economic and health burdens borne by both young and elderly women on the continent. The problems and challenges continue to be a giant figure! Tanzanian born artist, Gadi Ramadhani will be holding his exhibition that will tell the Girl Child story as it is. He was motivated to create this work from recent cases in Tanzania regarding the legal age of marriage consent. He has chosen to speak out against child marriage through his artistic work as his contribution to the society as a professional artist. Through this platform he will addresses this very thorny important society issue. His work recognizes the changes that need to be made both on a legal and society-wide level as well as the unequal power dynamics within homes that perpetuate exploitation of women, from domestic abuse to forced marriage.

LES ARBRES TANZANIENS

MV LIEMBA

“In Tanzania, Jeji B. is interested in the ancestral practices of the Makondé tribe, which he knows well, and he has made more than 250 wooden drums, thus bringing genuine works of art, reminiscent of memory and with its precious history, is a genuine act of resistance to the ravages of globalization, which in a subterranean but inescapable way robs the country’s wealth and begins the soul of the Tanzanian people. The forest is disappearing, taking with her the art of making instruments, music, and a whole section of the country’s culture.

“Liemba” is the oldest boat in the world still in operation and the setting of a boat movie in the heart of present-day Tanzania. Titus, his captain, tells us the story: Liemba has now become an improvised but primordial boat for the movement of people in the region. “Blacks, whites, Indians, Arabs or Chinese are all nationalities on board, but on the water we are all equal” But soon the Liemba will disappear, leaving the crew uncertain of their fate and thousands of worried passengers ... “

This screening will be followed by a performance from Jeji B. Q&A session will be held after the screening.

The documentary director will be present and will facilitate the Q&A session which will be held after the screening.

BY MOHAMED RAZA AND MAC SAWAYA Mac Sawaya and Mohamed Raza claim that the everyday events and movements present in their environment are the sources of their inspiration. Once inspired, they search for subjects to change to artistic forms, shapes and colors to create something new. A key characteristic of their works of art is integration of colour, space and forms and lines to convey a strong sense of motion and feelings. Their ideals are to give a creative fresh look to ordinary objects, events and movements around them. The purpose is to create interesting paintings to captivate people for as long as they can. Once again, Raza and Sawaya have joint their artistic forces for an exhibition. The painting exhibition is all about the two accomplished Tanzania Artists/ Painters.
