St George's chapel

flower guild Every week, a group of ladies make sure there are flowers on display in St George’s Chapel in Worcester Cathedral. The chapel is home to many memorials, banners and colours commemorating the Worcestershire men who have fought in numerous conflicts across the centuries. The Flower Guild is looking for new volunteers and its President Kathy Jackson tells us more.

he work of the Flower Guild goes back many decades, and in the past many of our members had military connections.

That’s less so today, although in my own case I was an Army nurse and my husband served in the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment.

We create flower arrangements which stand on either side of the altar as well as a display to one side of the chapel. You don’t need to be an expert flower arranger, many of us have learned the ropes from others.

Flowers are arranged every week except during Lent and Advent when flowers aren’t displayed in the Cathedral. An arrangement is created in special colours in April to commemorate the Worcestershire Yeomanry's actions at the Battle of Qatia in Palestine in 1916.

I’ve been part of the Guild for ten years and it’s a real privilege; many members have been part of the Guild for far longer. Visitors often come and chat to us as we arrange the flowers, they might have questions about Woodbine Willie or about other parts of our local regiments’ histories. When in St George’s Chapel, you really do have history all around you. I have a particular affection for two of the Colours that belonged to my husband’s battalion when he was serving.

The chapel in the north choir transept of the Cathedral was dedicated by the Bishop of Worcester in 1936 to members of all branches of the Armed Forces, gathering war memorials from around the cathedral into one place, including a window commemorating the Great War. Hanging above the chapel are regimental colours from across the centuries, a reminder that as well as more contemporary conflicts, local men fought in The Sikh War and the Boer War. Near the chapel is a cabinet which holds the names of all officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions The Worcestershire Regiment who embarked for France in August 1914.

Elsewhere in the Cathedral cloisters are further stained glass memorials to soldiers from the First World War. Worship continues in St George’s Chapel, with a regular services and in November this year the cathedral will host two exhibitions. One explores the role of horses in World War One and the other is a touring exhibition called The Face of World War One. THE REPAIR CAFE IS COMING TO WORCESTER The first event is on Saturday 14th May between 11am and 2pm at STARS Adult Day Care Centre on Stanley Road in Worcester.

A Repair Cafe is a regular community event where the public bring broken items and have them repaired. Typical items for repair could include electrical items, small items of furniture, clothes and textiles. Part of the idea is that people who bring items learn how to mend things too. Teas, coffees and cakes are normally available too, adding a sense of sociability. So, not only is a Repair Café a practical response to issues around landfill but also a social event and a learning experience at the same time.

The café is being organised by Transition Worcester in partnership with the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust, and volunteers are needed to help run the sessions. Anyone who is handy with a soldering iron, a tube of glue or a sewing machine will be fundamental to making it happen!

Volunteers are also needed to help with administering each event and with serving refreshments. Repair Café will continue on the second Saturday of each month.

SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Daisychain Benevolent Fund is looking for volunteers to help at its local shops. Volunteers will need to have around three and a half hours to spare each week and their work helps raise funds for the care of children in hospital as well as the Teenage Cancer Trust.

FREE SILVER SURFERS TRAINING There are free classes taking place in Worcester to help older people start using computers. Run by a local community interest company, the six week course is free and makes it easy to enter the digital world. ‘It’s all about reassurance’ says Bill Deavall from Silver Surfers Training. ‘On the first day of training people can look terrified but we quickly dispel a few myths. By the end of the course our learners can browse the internet, use email and do much more.’

Worcestershire Litfest & Fringe Friday 10th until Sunday 19th June The festival returns again this June with a busy programme of events. On the opening night, finalists hoping to become the next Worcestershire Poet Laureate go head to head at an event hosted by poet Matt Windle.

Among the many talks and sessions are four authors talking about getting published, an evening of stories and poems with Worcester Writers’ Circle and Friends and poems and songs about people who worked in the Kidderminster carpet industry.

All About...

the social sew The Social Sew is a group of volunteers that help you repair, re-invent and re-fashion your clothes. Meeting regularly in Worcester, they have helped and inspired lots of people to get more use out of fabrics that would otherwise be thrown away. Roisin Hanks is one of the group and tells us more.

How did The Social Sew begin?

Around two years ago, the Worcestershire Duckworth Trust (where I work) came together with the city council and later on the county council, to encourage local people to recycle fabric and avoid it going to landfill. We came up with the idea of a regular drop-in session where volunteers would help people to repair, mend or alter clothes to get further use from them.

Since that time the popularity of repair events has grown locally, including the Repair Café in Malvern and now a new Repair Café that’s starting in Worcester. We shall be at that event at the STARS Centre on Stanley Road on Saturday 14th May.

Who comes along to your gatherings?

Our volunteers bring different levels of sewing experience, some do it professionally and others do it for a hobby. We help people to mend their own items with simple tips like the correct way to sew on a button. There’s help available if you have something more complicated to attempt like adjusting shoulders or putting in a zip. We recently had a very expensive jumper with a small hole and one of our volunteers carried out an invisible repair.

Members of the public bring all sorts in for repair, and we always like a challenge! We are very much a social group, we chat as we work and mending things doesn’t feel like a chore.

Is everybody welcome?

Absolutely, we have people of all ages coming along. Many of those who come want to get away from buying really cheap clothing that quickly wears out. We help to prolong the life of items with repairs and we also do a bit of swishing, where you can bring clean and wearable clothes to swap with others.

One woman inherited something from her grandma that was just too big to wear, so we helped change the size. A man came in with many old T-Shirts with album covers and band logos on. We helped turn them into a quilt cover!

It’s not just about clothing but it’s also about recycling and giving fabric a longer life.

If you need help with something, do please drop in and see us. We have free access to sewing machines and we’re happy to help show you how to alter and repair your items. We like to say ‘It starts with sewing on a button and ends with things you never knew you could do with a sewing machine!’

Welcome... ...to the first edition of All About Worcester East & Villages, formerly known as All About Worcester. I am very excited to present this edition to our new readers (in Tibberton, Crowle, Norton and Fernhill Heath) and to our existing readers on the east side of Worcester.

The magazine will be more locally focussed, bringing you information about local events, local groups, music, stories, businesses and much more.

All About Magazines was started by me, Sascha McDonald - the editor, in 2009 in the village of Colwall and the area around it. With a background in the Voluntary Sector supporting groups and volunteers, I had to change my career when my eldest started school. I lived too far away from work to happily combine my busy job with being a mother and reaching the school gate in time each day. It was hard, but with hindsight it was one of the best things that I have done, as it made me think of what to do next.

And that is where the idea to start a magazine for the local community was born. It was a way to combine my love for the local area with my passion for the local groups and volunteers that make things happen. And once I started to get to know the local business community, who I helped

promote themselves to local people so they can keep trade local, I felt I was on the right road.

Now seven years later I am very proud to be a local employer, employing a small team of very dedicated workers. We also have a a large team of local deliverers who get the magazines out in all sorts of weather, to you the reader. We now publish 4 magazines in four local areas, soon to be reaching 42,000 homes and businesses every two months.

I love my job, especially when it comes to producing the magazines. To be honest, it is hard work, but when it is time again to design adverts for our customers and to lay out all the pages of the magazines, I am in my element. And I hope you like the result!

springtime singing events Elgar Chorale pay tribute to Shakespeare with ‘Music to Hear’ The Elgar Chorale will be adding their tribute to the bard in his anniversary year with a concert of readings and music. Taking its title from Sonnet 8 Music to hear, why hear’st thou music sadly?

- it takes place at St George’s Church in Barbourne on Saturday 18th June starting at 7.30 pm.

The Chorale will sing works by Vaughan Williams, Matthias, Rutter and George Shearing, the last accompanied by a jazz trio. A special feature will be the readings, chosen to complement the singing, read by Gabrielle Bullock and Sir Roy Strong, whom the Chorale is proud to have as its Patron.

Sir Roy, something of a national institution and widely recognised for a lifetime’s contribution to British fine arts, was appointed a Companion of Honour by the Queen in the New Year.

As its name suggests, the Chorale’s repertoire strongly features the work of Elgar as well as other English composers but it is by no means restricted.

They cover a broad range from Early Music through Bach to close harmony and new breed of 21st Century composers. Experienced singers interested in the chamber choir repertoire are encouraged to make contact via www.elgarchorale.com.

The Chorale was led by Dr Donald Hunt for over 25 years during which it has performed at Three Choirs Festivals, across the county and further afield on tours of Devon, France and South Africa.

Donald passed the baton in 2015 to its current musical director Piers Maxim who also leads the music in Malvern Priory and has an impressive musical pedigree which includes conducting operas in Europe and China.

Great Witley Operatic Society Concert A relaxing afternoon of music and socialising over an afternoon tea is in store next month as the Great Witley Operatic Society presents ‘The Romance of Novello’. Performed at St George’s Church in Barbourne, there will be close harmony singing of many of Ivor Novello’s best known songs, including ‘Waltz of my Heart’, ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, ‘We'll Gather Lilacs’ and ‘Shine Through my Dreams’. In an event designed to take away the stresses of the modern world, the performance is followed by a beautifully presented Afternoon Tea. The music is directed by Sue Black and accompanied at the piano by Joy Reeve.

The Romance of Novello takes place on Saturday 25th June, 2.30pm, at St George’s Church in St George’s Square, Barbourne. Tickets cost £10 which includes Afternoon Tea, and should be purchased in advance by calling (01905) 422789.

About Great Witley Operatic Society (or GWOS) GWOS has a wide repertoire from grand opera to musical theatre and puts on a major production every Spring. Starting in 1952, they are well known for their productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and in more recent years has branched out with performances of Fiddler on the Roof, Die Fledermaus and Oklahoma. This April, the society put on a spectacular performance of Carmen, with extravagant costumes and make up, dramatic stage lighting, and memorable renditions of the music written by Georges Bizet.

The society’s concerts are used to raise money for a wide range of charities both within Worcestershire and further afield. Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings in Worcester and new members are always welcome, not only as members of the cast or chorus but for many other tasks including wardrobe, make up, scenery, backstage and frontof-house. Severn sounds festival The Bohemians, a Queen tribute group, are the headline act on the opening evening of this year’s Severn Sounds Festival which starts on Friday 3rd June.

hey join The Magoos, Jasper in the Company of Others and Dexeter, who are fresh from an appearance at the O2 Arena and a recent UK Tour. Also playing at the festival is Done By Sunrise and Blobbie Williams who has numerous tv appearances including Lookalikes, Come Dine With Me and Deal or No Deal.

The festival started four years ago and since then has raised £5,000 for charity. It’s a family friendly mix of local music and art held at The Pavilion in the Park which is next to Cripplegate Park. Entry is free but money raised over the weekend will be donated to New Hope Worcester, a charity supporting the families of children with disabilities and complex health care needs.

The Severn Sounds Festival team is also working closely with Christopher Whitehead Language

College for their Battle of the Bands competition and the winning acts will be performing at the festival over the weekend.

As well as music there will be plenty of free activities for young people including drum workshops, Giant Colouring In, Bouncy Castles, Henna and Face Painting. There is also a Busk Stop Stage for anybody who fancies making their own contribution to the weekend’s musical entertainment!

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 4 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire.

The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator.

I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be.

How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help?

The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened!

Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope.

What actually happens at a workshop?

The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me?

• Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to.

When is the next one taking place?

The next DRW course will run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 9th and 23rd July and 6th August 2016: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between.

Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place?

DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course.

The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

cottage pie From Meg at Roots of Rushwick “Mum!! What’s for tea?!” the children shout as soon as they come through the back door from school. “Cottage Pie” I shout back and pause. “Ooooh! Yum!” comes the response … job done!

Made with a little bit of care and attention, a traditional cottage pie is hard to beat for family comfort food, filling and healthy, suits all ages (great whizzed up for little ones), perfect for a “cook when you can, serve when they’re ready” approach which is often adopted at our house.

And it goes with out saying that to make the best cottage pie, it is worth seeking out some really good quality ingredients. Local, organic beef mince that comes from properly matured and carefully prepared beef will give the delicious meaty flavour that such simple food deserves.

Method Prepare and finely dice the onion, carrot and celery.

Sauté the vegetables in a little olive oil over a low heat until softened. Transfer to a heavy bottomed casserole dish. In the same frying pan add a little more oil and the beef mince. Turn up the heat a little and brown the mince breaking it up as it cooks with a heatproof utensil. When it is brown all over use a slotted spoon to lift it away from excess fat and add it to the casserole.

Ingredients Serves 4 - 6 • 450g Roots Organic Beef Mince • One medium cooking onion • One large carrot • One stick of celery • Stock cube (made to 500ml) or 500ml of liquid stock • Worcestershire sauce • 6 large potatoes, Marfona make a nice fluffy mash • knob of butter • splash of milk • Knob of butter • 1 tbsp olive oil • salt and pepper

Add the stock liquor to the casserole, the Worcestershire sauce, season and bring to a gentle simmer. Allow the meat and vegetables to simmer gently while you prepare the mashed potato. Turn on the main oven to 170C. Peel and quarter the potatoes, bring them to the boil and cook until they are soft to the touch of a knife. Tip the potatoes into a colander to drain and then back into the hot saucepan with the butter and milk, mash until light and fluffy.

Assemble the cottage pie in an ovenproof dish spooning the meat and vegetables into the bottom and topping with the fluffy mashed potato. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until brown on top. Serve with seasonal vegetables.

when you lose your workout moyo

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester I'll be honest, it's a complete pain when it happens. You're cruising along, getting stuff done. Staying consistent with your good habits, giving it an extra push in the gym. And then, out of the blue one morning, you realise something horrible. Your workout mojo has GONE. Even the thought of lifting a weight or pounding out some miles on the road makes you feel tired.

Now what?

i

t took me a long while to figure this out, but there's an indisputable correlation between giving everything in one area of your life and suffering a flatline in exercise.

You haven't lost your motivation. You haven't changed your priorities. You don't need a kickstart, a new plan or a kick up the butt. You DO need to recognise that every single bit of your available energy is being eaten by the monster of a project you're throwing yourself into.

You won't always realise you're in the midst of a stonking great project though, that's the thing.

That's what makes you worry. Perhaps the level of effort you're putting into whatever it is crept up on you slowly and built up to seismic proportions. It'll probably just seem to you that you're working hard, maybe on a couple or three things. You might be keeping loads of other plates spinning at the same time, but your workout plate - that's lying on the floor, smashed up into a billion tiny pieces.

You'll know if this is where you are because you'll be thinking you need a holiday. And maybe you do.

Or maybe instead of taking a break, you actually need to give yourself a break and stop expecting to be able to do everything, all at once, without any of it affecting anything else.

A wise man said to me once that he doesn't believe there can always be balance. Sometimes you must give every little bit of yourself to something in order to do it to the standard you expect from yourself.

And, at times like that, you must see that other things will get sacrificed into the bargain. It's ok don't panic. It's not forever. Your mojo will return when you return to normal, and you will return to normal.

The best thing that you can do is keep a baseline going in the meantime. Do whatever feels easy and keeps you moving. I walk. You might swim or yoga or dance around the house. Get a sweat on if you want to. But don't sweat about your workout mojo leaving you for a while. Trust it to come home once you're done.

Music Feature

Local Talent Paul Jeffery is one of Worcester’s most talented guitarists, as well as one our longest running musicians! For more than five decades he’s been playing both solo and in several local groups. Here he tells us what he’s up to these days and where we can hear his music.

How do you describe your music?

I play in three bands. The first is called The Players, and our subtitle is (I kid you not!) ‘Rootsy, Bluesy, Country, Jazzy, Folky Resonators’! That’s a ridiculous mouthful, but it sums us up - we are genuinely eclectic. We’re a trio and a curious mix. I play acoustic finger-style guitar, Ed is on drums and Phil is on lead guitar.

Some people find us quite odd, because we’re not one style, mostly playing our own songs and that can make it hard for us to find gigs. We once played in a pub and afterwards the landlord said ‘You’re good, but people want Bon Jovi’!

We’re not fashionable, I assure you, but we are appreciated. We played recently at The Mount Pleasant on London Road. We didn’t know a soul there, in fact most of the people listening didn’t know us, but despite me thinking ‘They’re going to hate us’ we went down really well.

How did The Players start?

Ed is a drummer and dj - a young pup, while me and Phil are two old wrinkly-types. We started playing together years and years ago at College, jamming with acoustic guitars and playing songs

by Donovan, Blind Blake, the musicians that really influenced us. Many years later Phil came over to mine, we drank beer and after a while said ‘This is really good fun’ and so that’s how we started. We were very lucky to find Ed as he’s a fine percussionist which is very important in a largely acoustic group.

You mentioned other bands you play in?

The other band I play is The Whole Caboodle Electric Ceilidh Band which is really good fun.

We did play a gig at the St Swithun’s Institute recently, but we nearly always play at private

parties. I’m also in a band called Gandi’s Walrus and over the years I’ve played with many other people, including Old School Sky from the late 1970s.

If you play music with other people it really helps you to listen to the music. There’s a magic when me and Phil perform that I can’t put my finger on, and Ed’s percussion makes such a difference.

We’ll be playing at Café Bliss (at Worcester Arts Workshop) again in July where you’ll here some great music, and well worth coming along to hear original music as well as interpretations of betterknown songs.

You can’t hear The Players online, I have got a practise recording on MP3 somewhere but we’re not on Soundcloud or anything like that! The Players are due to appear again at The Mount Pleasant (on London Road) on Saturday May 28th and on Sunday July 10th at Café Bliss, at ‘Lazy Sunday’ which is a lovely eclectic mix of original music.

I have written a book called ‘Enigmatter’ which is a purposely non-linear, wry account of human consciousness. I also have a solo CD called ‘Cuttings from Don Quixote's Neglected Garden’.

Theatre News A Royal & Derngate, Northampton production in association with Ambassador Theatre Group William Shakespeare’s

king lear Directed by Max Webster In Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, an ageing tyrant’s decision to divide his kingdom tears his family apart, sparks catastrophic civil war and destroys all that he has.

Driven from his home, King Lear endures madness and great suffering as he battles a great storm. Yet with madness he finds reason, after betrayal he discovers loyalty and through his suffering a better world emerges.

Four-time Olivier award nominee Michael Pennington has played numerous roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company in a career spanning over 50 years. This new production will see Michael play the role in the UK for the first time. He will be joined by a distinguished cast of thirteen actors.

This new production of King Lear is directed by Max Webster. Max is Associate Director at the Old Vic, where he recently directed The Lorax.

Other recent credits include Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare’s Globe and To Kill a Mocking Bird and Orlando at Manchester’s Royal Exchange.

King Lear will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Monday 27th June to Saturday 2nd July.
