Enjoy Local 1. midsummer malvern

A week of heritage talks, walks, music and other activities returns to Malvern this June. Organised by Malvern Civic Society, Midsummer Malvern’s theme this year is ‘Music in Malvern’ and will include a community choir concert, jazz, lectures on Elgar and the artist HL Oakley, as well as a music recital celebrating a century of women in music. There’s also open garden events and a picnic on The Worcestershire Beacon, accompanied by a piper. Midsummer Malvern takes place between Friday 21st and Sunday 30th June.

Hereford Big Band comes to Malvern Cube this June.

With more than twenty instrumentalists plus vocalists, this is the perfect chance to dance the night away to some of the big hits from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Malvern Naturalists’ Field Club is organising a coach trip to Ashwood Nurseries and David Austin Roses. Taking place on Wednesday 24th July, the trip includes a tour of John Massey’s garden, and then after lunch the trip moves on to David Austin Roses for a cream tea in the marquee. 4. malvern festival chorus concert Malvern Festival Chorus’s final concert of the season is on Saturday 22nd June at 7.30 pm in Malvern Forum Theatre. Conducted by Jonathan Brown, it features a programme of lyrical music from the late 19th and 20th centuries, with works including Duruflé’s Requiem, Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré, Brahms’s Geistliches Lied and Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The Chorus will be joined by acclaimed mezzo-soprano, Claire Williams, and accompanied by the musicians of Regency Sinfonia.

5. Madresfield Court Open Gardens and Fete Madresfield Court Open Gardens and Fete promises fun for all the family, in a beautiful setting, on Saturday 22nd June.

The day will be filled with music, family entertainment and a dog show, birds of prey, food and drink. Its also a chance to enjoy the grounds around the court, entry is £5, with free entry for under 11s. The day will raise money for Madresfield Church and the Primary School.

community NEWS MALVERN MUSIC EXHIBITION It Was Only Rock ‘n’ Roll – But We Liked It! From Pink Floyd to Motorhead, through punk and prog rock, Malvern’s Winter Gardens hosted some of the best-known bands of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. This July, a new exhibition charts some of those legendary concerts in words and pictures. Rock Around the Hills, a Malvern-based charity, has created an interactive exhibition which features more than 400 posters, tickets, flyers and fanzines, as well as recorded memories from audience members, musicians and promoters. MALVERN HILLS CHALLENGE Registration is now open for the tenth annual Malvern Hills Challenge. The event returns in September, with a walk, jog or a run following either a long or short route – entry is open to individuals and teams. Accompanied children are very welcome to take part, and dog owners can bring their four-legged friends along on a lead. News MALVERN SINGERS The Malvern Singers are looking for new members. The choir has 40 adult singers, both male and female, whose repertoire comprises arrangements of spiritual, classical and popular songs. PARKINSON’S FRIENDSHIP GROUP Malvern Parkinson’s Friendship Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at Clarence Park Village in Malvern Link between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Everyone who is affected

by Parkinson’s is welcome to come along for interesting talks about various topics as well as advice from professionals specialising in Parkinson’s and all its aspects. The next talk, on 20th June, will be about security issues.

The group offers as much support to carers as for people with Parkinson’s, from a friendly chat over tea and biscuits to giving information about help that is available. Parkinson’s affects people differently and therefore every carer’s needs are different. The group’s events will appear in this magazine every two months.

Martha’s Meadow Martha’s Meadow is a secure exercise field for dogs. Situated between Malvern and Upton upon Severn, near Hanley Swan, the three-acre field can be booked by dog owners whose pet might struggle to be taken for a walk in public.

‘There are many different reasons for people to use the field’ says Lynne Herbert, who, together with husband David, has set it up. ‘If you struggle to keep up with your dog, the field allows your dog to run off but not go astray. Other dogs might have recall issues, or you might come to us if your bitch is on heat and can’t come into contact with other dogs.’

Use of the field is £5 per half hour, and even though it only recently opened, several owners have already made bookings for the entire year.

The field is secured with high fencing on all sides.

There’s an undercover area with seats, plus toilet facilities and refreshments on site.

malvern hills volunteering Malvern Hills Volunteering helps anyone who would like to volunteer but is unaware of the range of roles locally. Kay Bromley, who runs the service together with Jacqueline Smith, tells us more.

Volunteering can be a useful way for people who are new to the area to make friends, for those who have recently retired to take up a new interest, to improve CVs and job application forms, to build and maintain confidence after physical or mental illness or for fulfilling part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Volunteering is a good way of ‘job sampling’ for anyone considering changing careers. Many people volunteer because they wish to help in their local community to help them to feel connected to it or to ‘put something back.’ They may find volunteering rewarding and fulfilling.

In the Malvern Hills District we have over 200 volunteering roles available with small local groups or local groups of national charities. The roles range from Trustees who help manage and take charities forward – Chair to Treasurer, working with children with special needs, befriending the elderly, driving patients to medical appointments, youth work, conservation work in nature reserves and on the Malvern Hills, reception tasks, stewarding in local museums, helping at lunch clubs, supporting victims of violence and fundraising. These are just a few examples.

We offer a free, confidential, impartial service and will try to suggest roles appropriate to the person’s interests, needs, skills and abilities.

Friday mornings from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The sessions are ‘drop-in’ but appointments can also be made. Malvern Hills Volunteering is a project of South Worcestershire Citizens Advice. We are a small team of two part time employees and 3 volunteers.

We advertise roles on the national volunteering website, www.do-it.org which works by postcode and areas of interest. Roles are also highlighted online at www.malvernhillsvolunteering.org. uk and kept in a folder, available to the public in Malvern Library. Every quarter we produce a leaflet (available by request or in Malvern Library) of our latest volunteering roles. Recently we have updated our leaflet specifically for young volunteers, under the age of 18 years.

This month I would like to highlight a new role with Malvern Special Families. This group works with children and young adults with disabilities. They require a Treasurer to assist the Board of Trustees to oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they meet accepted accounting practice. A volunteer would need financial acumen and experience of producing management accounts. There is a bookkeeper to support the Treasurer.

The role will require a DBS check (free to the volunteer) and preferably a two year commitment. There will be aound 10 Trustee Meetings a year, which are held in Malvern, usually from 5 – 7pm.

hot peppers wi Hot Peppers WI is one of the newest Women’s Institutes in Worcestershire.

Meeting in Upton-upon-Severn, the membership covers a broad age range and welcomes all women. Leaza French is the group’s President and tells us more.

We have a busy and varied programme of activities and talks right through the year, chosen by the 41 ladies who make up our membership.

Usually in January we start the year with a health-related meeting, whether that’s around food, fitness or Bollywood dancing! Through the rest of the year it’s a mix of craft activites, walks, talks and trips. Last month we visited The Royal Mint in South Wales and we had a gin tasting which was very popular!

This summer we have a theatre trip to see the musical Fame. There’s a talk by Karen Matthews from The Wool Shack and in July we’re running the catering tent at Upton Blues Festival. We do this every year, making plenty of cakes and selling tea and coffee over the whole weekend.

Once our costs are covered, any money we take goes back into our WI towards educational trips.

We also raise funds for different charities including those nominated by the Women’s Institute nationally. We’ve been collecting bras for recycling, the proceeds from which will go to Breast Cancer Haven.

Our ladies range in age from their twenties to one who is in her eighties. It’s a very supportive community and I’ve made many friends through the Hot Peppers WI. Our meetings take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Upton Rugby Club.

New members are always very welcome.

walking group Established more than 40 years ago, the Malvern Hills District Footpath Society is a friendly local group with an extensive programme of guided weekly walks.

The Society was established in 1973 by a group of walking enthusiasts who were keen to walk local paths and ensure they were well-maintained with clear waymarking, safe stiles and functioning gates. For the most part, the goals of those early pioneers have been achieved, as Malvern now boasts a fabulous network of paths that crisscross some superb countryside.

These days, the Society continues to function as a very active and friendly walking group, with more than 150 members. It offers three guided walks per week, ranging from a 3-mile ‘Extra Easy’ walk with an optional pub lunch, to 12-mile ‘Strenuous’ walks. Most routes are within the Malvern Hills District area, but some go further afield to neighbouring counties. There is also an active social programme with club nights for skittles, talks, or quizzes. Every year at least one

UK holiday is on offer for both walkers and nonwalking companions.

Everyone is welcome to attend a few walks before deciding whether or not to join, membership is only £7. Just turn up at the designated time at the corner of Imperial Road and Avenue Road (by the shop near the Great Malvern railway station) with your walking boots and snack. You will be greeted by a friendly group of walkers who will happily explain more to you about the club. Walkers car-share to travel to the start of each walk, giving you a chance to meet a few of your fellow walkers for that day.

Community RECONNECTIONS ‘Once a week I have a hospital appointment.

That’s the only time I see anyone’. 35,000 people in Worcestershire suffer from loneliness and isolation. Fortunately, there’s a free service running locally that helps older people connect with other people, places or activities near them. Run by Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire, together with partner organisations, Reconnections is tailored to suit each individual. Home visits, making new friends, trips out and exploring a new hobby, all help boost confidence and improve the quality of life.

The service relies on volunteers, who work on a flexible basis, allowing it to fit alongside other commitments. Some volunteers even visit with their children or pets! Volunteers usually work with someone for around six months, visiting them at home, helping to set up social contacts and other help which will become self-sustaining once the client’s contact with Reconnections comes to an end. Everybody is getting on well, there’s a buzz in the room, but for many of the people attending, mixing with others can be a real challenge. This is the Over-16s Social Group of SKY Autism Support, a local charity supporting people with autism and their families.

with autism to share their experiences. It can be quite emotional but it allows you to open up to others who will understand. Occasionally we’ll have a guest speaker who is either a professional, or a parent with a particular area of expertise.’

‘We try not to be too prescriptive, but we usually have a meal and then board games and a pack of cards come out’ says Yvonne, one of the people organising the group. ‘New people are always made welcome, everybody here knows it can be difficult to walk into a room of strangers, so they are always given a lot of help to settle in.’

SKY Autism Support recently became a charity and today it supports 102 families in and around Malvern. ’It’s fantastic to see the change in people’, says Lyn, another of the people who helps to run the over-16s meetings. ‘Some young people arrive very shy and reserved indeed, but they really come out of themselves here. It’s wonderful to see.’

Joel has been coming for two years. ‘There’s always a familiar face here and I like coming, you can practise socialising and it’s a safe environment.’ Another member of the group is Stef, an up and coming singer-songwriter, who has overcome his nerves and sometimes brings his guitar along. ‘I’ve been coming for a year, and sometimes I perform some of the music I’ve written’ he says. ‘You meet lovely people here, I really enjoy it and come every week.’

The social group for over 16s meets every other week, while another group for 11 to 16 year olds meets separately at Malvern Cube.

SKY Autism Support began around ten years ago, with the original meetings organised by Simon Macaulay. ‘Around that time my son James was diagnosed with autism and it was very difficult. I was fortunate to have the support of my local church community, but even so, you struggle for all kinds of reasons. We started the family meetings, which take place every couple of months. It’s a chance for the parents of children

Muscle wasting/Atrophy Muscle size naturally diminishes with age and lack of activity. Additionally certain neurological and metabolic diseases are characterised by widespread muscle loss. But there are many occasions when specific muscles shrink due to injury/ trauma or nerve damage.

Injury/Trauma This is a subject close to my heart currently. At the beginning of January this year I seriously injured my left knee in a skiing accident.

A week later I underwent open knee surgery to reattach my anterior cruciate ligament where its bony anchor had been shattered by a collision. Within a few days of the accident my normally strong looking thigh muscles started shrinking and after the surgery this became a lot more pronounced, as can be seen in the photograph.

Mechanism for muscle loss Immediately following my operation, I found that no matter how hard I tried, I could not contract my thigh muscles on the injured side. It was alarming but it felt like the muscle was no longer connected to my brain.

This is pretty normal after such a big surgery and is known as AMI or Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition.

It’s a natural mechanism in which the nerve signal to the muscle gets temporarily switched off. It’s a

type of guarding response but if it doesn’t switch back on again it can become a serious hindrance to rehabilitation and it undoubtedly contributes to muscle loss.

The actual mechanism of the muscle loss is not totally understood but may involve an imbalance between protein synthesis and protein degradation.

Nerve damage A similar phenomenon occurs when nerves are damaged. Examples include a loss of thumb muscle size in carpel tunnel syndrome and people often suffer a loss of muscle bulk in a buttock or a calf muscle after sciatica in which one of the nerve roots becomes compressed by a bulging lumbar disc.

Recovery Whether the muscle bulk returns or not depends on many factors: age, extent of joint or nerve damage, pre trauma fitness level, rehabilitation style etc etc. In my own case I initially did isometric thigh exercises and used an electrical muscle stimulator to maintain bulk and strength. I am now walking on the Malvern Hills and cycling as well as doing other specific strength exercises.

SUMMER IN UPTON With its riverside location, historic town centre and music events, Upton upon Severn attracts visitors from near and far.

The historic buildings in the town centre, the many independent shops, a large playground and the riverside walks make it a lovely place for a day out in summer. History

barnards green history The donation of a collection of old business documents, dating back almost a century, has revealed a thriving picture of local trade in Barnards Green almost a century ago.

‘We were given over 30 invoices and receipts dating from the 1920s from Grant Morgan of Morgan’s Blacksmiths’ says Faith Renger from the group. ‘They show us how one ordinary Barnards Green family shopped and interacted with other local traders at that time.’

The history group is using the documents as the basis for a history morning on Saturday 8th June, when they will be on display at the forge itself on Upper Chase Road. There will also be a feature board which places the documents in a wider historical context. Grant Morgan will give tours of the forge which dates from 1868 and still features some of the original equipment. A fascinating time-line charting the history of the area, through maps, will also be on view.

The group will be leading a short walking tour round the Green and Brian Iles, Malvern’s renowned local historian, will be on hand together

with group members to answer questions about Malvern’s local history.

‘We have had fun working on this event and believe there is something for everyone to enjoy’ says Barbara Hartley-Woolley, who has helped to organise the day. ‘Added to this, we hope that people will take the opportunity to share their queries with our group members, or our special guest. We will be especially pleased to view local documents or photographs, so please feel to bring them along.’

Seasonal asparagus A really simple summer dish making use of local asparagus Ready in 10 minutes - Serves 2

• bunch of asparagus, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 tin white beans • zest of 1 lemon • pinch of crushed chillies • handful chopped parsley • 2 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil • salt and pepper to taste

1. Put pan on the heat, add the asparagus with a small amount of water.

Steam until cooked.

2. When the water has absorbed add some oil. Add the butter beans and fry for a few moments.

3. Add the garlic, chilli and lemon zest and cook for two minutes more.

4. Remove from heat, season to taste, add more chilli if required. Sprinkle with chopped parsley to serve.

David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers and Theatre by the Lake are delighted to announce that a major new stage production of Willy Russell’s Educating Rita will tour the UK in 2019. Starring Stephen Tompkinson as Frank, and introducing Jessica Johnson as Rita, the play will be directed by Max Roberts.

Educating Rita tells the story of married hairdresser Rita, who enrols on an Open University course to expand her horizons, and her encounters with university tutor Frank.

Frank is a frustrated poet, brilliant academic and dedicated drinker, who is less than enthusiastic about teaching Rita. However, Frank soon finds that his passion for literature is reignited by Rita, whose technical ability for the subject is limited by her lack of education, but whose enthusiasm Frank finds refreshing. The two soon realise how much they have to learn from each other.

This hilarious and heart-warming comedy won the Olivier award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi award winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine.
