AGRIMEC Garden Machinery AGRIMEC has been located in Ledbury for over 47 years. We are agricultural engineers and started in 1971 as a supplier, service and repair business for Lamborghini Tractors and Hardi sprayers.

Top Utility Solutions

Whilst we no longer sell tractors, our core business is still selling Hardi Sprayers and we have added Perfect Mowers and SFM Harvesting equipment brands selling to cider apple growers, horticultural and farming businesses. We also offer Pellenc electronic pruning equipment. We have a fully equipped workshop with skilled engineers undertaking maintenance and repair work on all kinds of agricultural and horticultural machinery as well as our own brands. We also take on many design and build projects for local businesses.

If you answered yes to any of the above, perhaps we can help. We are Simon and Sue Hollingshead, we live locally and take great pleasure in helping people to pay less for their household bills, whilst providing a professional and personal service.

Our new project is to offer garden machinery and smallholding equipment to the public. We are stockists of IBEA mowers, strimmers, chain saws and hedge cutters. It has taken some time to find a brand we are happy to sell, with the best quality at a competitive price. We offer demonstration of the machine, delivery, instruction on use and full repairing and maintaining backup service. We do not sell online as we offer the full package as described above. In addition, we also offer a range of environmentally friendly Pellenc electric pruners, strimmers and hedge cutters. The engines used on Ibea strimmers, chain saws and hedge cutters are designed and built in-house at Ibea’s parent Company Active. The Company originally designed go-kart racing engines so the design and technology is of the highest standard. Whilst we keep spare parts for these, it is rare that they give any trouble. We also offer Wessex, SCH and Enduromaxx machinery for quad bikes and small tractors including mowers, horse paddock cleaners, chain harrows, rollers, hedge cutters, trailers, bale feeders, cultivators, sprayers, water bowsers and people carriers. It you would like to discuss and view the machines, please drop in to our showroom on Bromyard Road. We are the second yard back from the railway bridge. The showroom is at the bottom of the yard on left hand side. We look forward to welcoming you.

Legal advice

DO PERSONAL INJURY LAWYERS HAVE A BAD REPUTATION? By Jonathan Lewis I ask the question with (I hope) a degree of humility as I have 30 years’ experience as a solicitor of dealing with accident claims on behalf of both Claimants and Defendants’ insurance companies. I am a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers whose members are committed to promoting full and just compensation for all types of personal injury and always to act in the client’s best interests. Nevertheless there may still be a perception (perhaps contributed to by daytime TV advertisements and those annoying texts and cold calls you sometimes receive from claims management companies) that there is something a little unsavoury about the claims process and the lawyers who are part of it: the tabloids do like to have a pop at ‘unscrupulous ambulancechasing no-win no-fee solicitors’. As someone who these days struggles to run for a bus, I like to think that I don’t fit into this category (and no reputable solicitor would ever cold call you) but what can I and other personal injury lawyers do to combat these negative perceptions and reassure potential clients that they will receive solid, independent advice on a potential claim? In my opinion meeting your solicitor on a free, no obligation basis is a good start. A lot of the larger legal firms advertise on TV, radio and online but they are likely to be based some distance away from where you live and it is very likely that you will never get to meet the person who deals with your claim. However at Orme & Slade we still believe that knowing your solicitor and building up a good relationship with them is really key. It also helps if the person you are dealing with is an expert in his or her field. There is a lot of good, free guidance out there (for example the Citizens Advice Bureau has an excellent website) but if you think that you may have a claim for injuries arising from an accident or because of sub-standard medical treatment then please do get in touch to discuss how we might be able to help. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Jonathan Lewis at Orme & Slade: jl@ormeandslade.co.uk or 01531 632226

Megan Baker House Megan Baker House helps children and adults with a wide range of motor disorders. Last year the charity began working in Ledbury and it’s been so successful they’re looking at expanding their local services even further. Based on Orchard Lane at Shaw Healthcare Leadon Bank, they provide specialist services to improve both gross and fine motor control, with clients taught innovative techniques by graduates in the field of conductive education. There are several classes a week helping people with Parkinson’s, stroke, MS, cerebral palsy, DCD (developmental co-ordination disorder, otherwise known as dyspraxia), brain injury and undiagnosed co-ordination difficulties. Everything is tailored to individual needs and so, for example, Parkinson’s classes incorporate the movement approach of conductive education alongside work on speech and facial movement, writing and individual daily living skills. ‘Ledbury is the perfect place for our work’ says the charity’s Chief Executive, Lee Gough. ‘It has good public transport and motorway links, allowing us to help local people as well as those from further afield. Shaw Healthcare has been very good to us, but we desperately need more space. If anybody knows of anywhere suitable in Ledbury, do please email me via Lee@meganbakerhouse.org.uk .’

In the meantime, there’s a chance to visit the charity when they hold a Drop-in Day at Leadon Bank on Thursday 20th June. Taking place between 10am and 4pm, you can meet staff and find out more about their work. If you can’t make it, but would like a one-to-one chat, you can call the Ledbury Manager Sue Mechan on (01531) 633840. Megan Baker House constantly needs to raise funds to continue their work. Local company Bevisol has made them its Charity of the Year, with staff working hard to offer their support. Group

ledbury carers Ledbury Carers’ Group is open to anyone who is a carer. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Leadon Bank. Stories and experiences are shared on an informal basis which can help you find access to statutory and voluntary services, knowledge regarding availability of benefits, mobility aids, transport, respite or care homes. There are regular speakers, and recently these have included St Michael’s Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Society, Herefordshire MIND and Laughter Yoga. A talk about Admiral Nurses, who offer specialised support to the families of people with dementia, helped signpost one member of the group towards much-needed help. The group is part of a co-ordinated network of groups across the county, linked together and supported by Herefordshire Carers’ Support (HCS). As council funding is withdrawn, new ways to become financially self-sustaining are being sought and so if you think you can help,

please get in touch. It’s impossible to say exactly how much the camaradie, information-sharing and mutual support within the group has helped individual carers in the eight years the group has been meeting. Support comes from knowing they are not alone, having a colleague to call upon at a time when their inner strength is being challenged. Not infrequently it takes a significant amount of time for an individual to recognise their caring role. Ledbury carers hopes to raise the profile of carers and reach out to all carers through the network that they have established, growing and strengthening the group. If you’d like to find out more, please give the group’s co-ordinator Hazel a ring on (01531) 635622. Financial advice

Early Bird By Andrew Tannatt Nash It is midway through the second month of the tax year and I am the happy recipient of a steady flow of financial information from clients finalising their tax affairs from the previous year. I am always pleased to receive such timely information, as it allows me to provide a more efficient service to my clients. Preparing the information in a judicious way also allows the tax-payer time to consider the impact of electing to utilise allowances. I can also help these clients proactively plan their tax affairs for the coming year. What information should I provide to my accountant? Here’s a few ideas to consider: Employment - If you are employed, your employer should have already provided you with a P60, showing your earnings and the tax paid. If you receive taxable benefits, such as a company car or medical care, your employer will issue you with a P11D and you will need to forward this to your accountant. The deadline for issuing a P11D is 6th July 2019. You should also provide

details of pension contributions paid in the year, including any paid by an employer on your behalf. Don’t forget to provide any PAYE coding notice that you have received from HMRC during the year. Pensioners - If you are a taxpayer, you will need to provide details of your state pension. You will also receive a P60 from other pension providers, detailing the amount of pension that you received, and the tax deducted at source. Landlords - You will need to provide details of any rent received and any expenses that you have incurred. The treatment of tax relief on interest paid has changed recently. You should obtain a certificate of interest paid, from your lender, in respect of any loan which you consider that you may be entitled to, tax relief, with details of the purpose of any new loan. Investment Income - You may be lucky enough to receive income from your investments, through dividends and interest. A lot of people do not pay tax on this income, as a result of the personal savings allowance and the dividend allowance. You must however disclose this information on your tax return. You should therefore retain your dividends counterfoils and interest certificates. During the year, you may have been notified about Chargeable Event certificates on certain bonds and life assurance policies. It is important that you share such information with your accountant. Assets - When you sell some assets, or even gift them to certain people, you may have to pay capital gains tax. It is important that you provide details, and the associated costs to your accountant. Gift Aid - Don’t forget to inform your accountant about donations that you have made to charities during the year. While this list may appear a little daunting at first, don’t let this deter you. Collating the information now will allow you to relax, to plan and may even reduce your tax bill. You can visit Andrew at The Practice in Ledbury for more information at 7 The Southend or call 01531 631380 www.thepracticeledbury.co.uk

admiral's cafe A new café with a difference is opening in Colwall. Called Admiral’s Café, it will open once a month at the village hall to offer free support, advice and refreshment to people living with dementia and their carers. A similar café has already been running at Hereford County Hospital. Its named after the Admiral Nurses employed by the Wye Valley NHS Trust, who offer expert care and support to families living with dementia. The cafés provide a quiet area for caregivers to meet and share their experiences with other carers, whilst having a free cup of tea or coffee, along with access to support and advice from a trained Admiral Nurse. After opening on 16th May, the new café at Colwall Village Hall will run between 10am and Midday on the first Thursday of each month.

There is no need to book, you can just come along.

‘You can just just turn up’ says Marcus Allen who is helping to run it in Colwall. ‘If you have dementia, the outside world can sometimes be a frightening place. The idea of the café is to offer somewhere to visit where you can feel secure and comfortable. In future months we hope to

Gardening

green fingers

Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget gives her thoughts on why the actions of gardeners are so crucial to improving the environment. This spring at the nursery, we have been busy helping customers who are all keen to buy organic and chemical-free plants. It’s taken 35 years of me ‘bashing on’ about it, but it is rewarding to know how much the public now care about saving our pollinators. I have also received orders from various gardening and conservation groups, community gardens and even The Eden Project, all wanting organic and peat-free plants. This is great news for our wildlife, as our gardens cover a huge area of the UK. The most precise measure I have seen is an area of 432,964 hectares, which, using the standard area measure, is one fifth the size of Wales. Putting this in protected landscape terms, it is the area of the Norfolk Broads, and the Exmoor, Dartmoor and Lake District National Parks added together. One quarter of the area of a typical city (and half its green space) is private gardens, so the potential national significance of gardens as a resource for wildlife is clear. If we can stop using chemicals in our gardens and use pollinatorfriendly plants, each of us can contribute to creating quite a significant area of the UK that is wildlife-friendly. Jobs in the Garden for June and July Throw away the pesticides (responsibly!) Enjoy the aphids - they feed the birds, so save on bird food. Cut back early spring flowering herbaceous Bridget runs Caves Folly Nurseries on Evendine Lane in Colwall (WR13 6DX). They are open from March until October, Thursdays to Saturdays from 10 - 5. You can contact them on 01684 540631 or visit their website:

Keep an eye on watering, especially newly planted trees and shrubs. Dead-head bedding in containers and baskets and feed regularly. Keep picking sweet peas to encourage new flowers. If we have hot weather do not cut the lawn too short. It took a long time for heavily scalped lawns to recover last summer. Kitchen garden Earth up potato plants to stop tubers turning green. Nip outside shoots on tomato plants and feed each week with a tomato liquid feed. Make continuous successional sowings of herbs such as Dill, Coriander, Chervil and salads right up until the middle of September. Keep picking peas and beans and tie them securely. Freeze fresh produce ready for winter. Enjoy a bowl of strawberries and cream! As we are celebrating 40 years on the nursery this year and I would like to say thanks to all our caring and loyal customers, friends and family. Without them we would not have survived the rollercoaster of challenges that all growers face. Thank you.

Theatre News Willy Russell’s

educating rita David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers and Theatre by the Lake are delighted to announce that a major new stage production of Willy Russell’s Educating Rita will tour the UK in 2019. Starring Stephen Tompkinson as Frank, and introducing Jessica Johnson as Rita, the play will be directed by Max Roberts. Educating Rita tells the story of married hairdresser Rita, who enrols on an Open University course to expand her horizons, and her encounters with university tutor Frank. Frank is a frustrated poet, brilliant academic and dedicated drinker, who is less than enthusiastic about teaching Rita. However, Frank soon finds that his passion for literature is reignited by Rita, whose technical ability for the subject is limited by her lack of education, but whose enthusiasm Frank finds refreshing. The two soon realise how much they have to learn from each other. This hilarious and heart-warming comedy won the Olivier award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi award winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine. Educating Rita will be on stage at Malvern Theatres from Monday 5th – Saturday 10th August. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and www.malvern-theatres.co.uk
