All About...

worcester carnival Worcester Carnival returns this year on Saturday 6th July. Offering a day of entertainment, the main parade takes place from 3pm. Helen Sherratt is one of the committee that organises it and tells us more.

What’s this year’s theme?

We’ve chosen books as a theme which has been well received. It ties nicely into World Book Day, which many children already take part in, and we’re hoping we can work with local schools once again. The theme will be used by the groups who decorate the floats that take part in the afternoon parade. We already have a similar number of floats and walking groups signed up, compared with last year. We make bucket collections during the event and we also run a raffle which is drawn the day after the main event. We are inviting children to enter a competition to design the cover of their favourite book and schools are being encouraged to take part. We have set up a charitable trust, and the money raised from the carnival is donated to a nominated charity. For us, it’s about making a difference and we always choose a locally based good cause. Last year we chose Worcester Play Council, for this year we’re working through applications and expect to make an announcement soon.

How was last year’s event? It went very well, and despite a crucial World Cup game for England on the same day, we still had a good turnout. It was a very hot day as well and the entertainment we hosted in the city centre, together with the stage on Pitchcroft was a success. It was a special moment when the floats were ready to leave, I felt as though we had achieved a lot in bringing the carnival back to Pitchcroft for the first time in many years. Another great moment was seeing a group of foreign exchange students, who joined from a local school, taking part in the parade. They really enjoyed taking part and had lots of tales to take home.

Who makes the carnival happen? We have a small but dedicated committee,

14

including myself, which puts a huge amount of work into making this all happen. Our volunteers are fantastic, and a vital part of making carnival work, doing everything from collecting donations to selling raffle tickets, to handing out brochures and keeping everyone happy. We can always do with more help, so if you’d like to find out more, please send an email to volunteers@worcester-carnival.co.uk .

What route will the parade follow this year? We’ve decided to stick with the route used last year, because it worked very well. The parade leaves Pitchcroft at 3pm and heads along Dolday and Deansway into College Street. It continues along City Walls Road then onto the High Street, along Foregate Street before heading back to Pitchcroft along Castle Street. We’ll be holding our football tournament in the morning once again, and we have a netball tournament on the 9th of June. There will be a children's funfair and other entertainment on Pitchcroft throughout the day, as well as stalls. race for life This year, for the first time, women, men and children can all join in with the Race for Life at Worcester Racecourse. Organised by Cancer Research UK, there are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July. ‘Our Race for Life events have been womenonly since they started, over 25 years ago’ says Kimberley Degville, the Worcester Event Manager for Cancer Research UK. ‘But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.’ You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like. Taking part in the Race for Life is a hugely moving experience as people come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate

16

the lives of those dear to them who have survived or support those going through treatment. Nationally, it raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. All About...

push for victory An event is being held to mark the 75th anniversary of the Worcestershire Regiment’s involvement in two key battles towards the end of World War Two. The Worcesters Push for Victory will help to raise funds for the Regimental Museum in Worcester. Sandra Taylor who is helping to organise the event tells us more.

Tell us about the event? Taking place on Saturday 15th June, it will be a day to remember the bravery of the men who, 75 years ago, took part in two major events of the Second World War. Incredibly, we hope that two veterans of the regiment from that time will be joining us. Alan George and Brian Freeman, despite their advanced years, will be coming to the event at St Helen’s Church in the centre of Worcester. There will be short talks on the battles, as well as displays and book signing by Mick Wilkes and Dennis Hodgkins, who have written on local aspects of the war. There will be plenty more going on, including displays, children’s activities, re-enactors, a book stall, tombola and refreshments.

Which battles will you be commemorating? In June 1944 the Worcestershire Regiment landed in Normandy before advancing to the south and east. By July they found themselves near Caen in Northern France, where they became involved in heavy fighting to capture a strategic position known as Hill 112. Earlier in 1944, soldiers from the Regiment were involved in action against Japanese troops at Kohima in northeast India. There were heavy losses in both battles, but, in both cases, the battles marked significant turning points in the war.

During our event on 15th June, local cadets will be reading extracts from letters written by some of the soldiers to loved ones back home, which should be very poignant.

How did the idea for the event come about? The Mercian Regiment Museum (‘The Worcestershire Soldier’) is based at the Museum and Art Gallery on Foregate Street and has recently had its funding cut so we are holding this event to contribute to its finances. The museum itself is a gem, taking visitors through the entire history of the Regiment from 1694, through various mergers, to the present day. At the moment there’s an exhibition on Kohima and we’ll be telling visitors more about the Normandy campaign of 1944. The Regiment also has an archive which is housed at Dancox House in Lowesmoor, which holds a wealth of material which is regularly used to help people trace their family’s involvement with the regiment.

The Worcesters Push for Victory takes place on Saturday 15th June, from 10am to 4pm, at St Helen’s Church on Fish Street, just off the High Street in the centre of Worcester. The Worcestershire Soldier, at the City Museum and Art Gallery on Foregate Street, can be visited Monday to Saturday between 10.30am to 4.30pm – entry is free. You can read more at worcestershireandmercianregimentmuseum.org

David V Jones & Associates Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern

Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us

Muscle wasting/Atrophy Muscle size naturally diminishes with age and lack of activity. Additionally certain neurological and metabolic diseases are characterised by widespread muscle loss. But there are many occasions when specific muscles shrink due to injury/ trauma or nerve damage. Injury/Trauma This is a subject close to my heart currently. At the beginning of January this year I seriously injured my left knee in a skiing accident. A week later I underwent open knee surgery to reattach my anterior cruciate ligament where its bony anchor had been shattered by a collision. Within a few days of the accident my normally strong looking thigh muscles started shrinking and after the surgery this became a lot more pronounced, as can be seen in the photograph. Mechanism for muscle loss Immediately following my operation, I found that no matter how hard I tried, I could not contract my thigh muscles on the injured side. It was alarming but it felt like the muscle was no longer connected to my brain. This is pretty normal after such a big surgery and is known as AMI or Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition. It’s a natural mechanism in which the nerve signal to the muscle gets temporarily switched off. It’s a

type of guarding response but if it doesn’t switch back on again it can become a serious hindrance to rehabilitation and it undoubtedly contributes to muscle loss. The actual mechanism of the muscle loss is not totally understood but may involve an imbalance between protein synthesis and protein degradation. Nerve damage A similar phenomenon occurs when nerves are damaged. Examples include a loss of thumb muscle size in carpel tunnel syndrome and people often suffer a loss of muscle bulk in a buttock or a calf muscle after sciatica in which one of the nerve roots becomes compressed by a bulging lumbar disc. Recovery Whether the muscle bulk returns or not depends on many factors: age, extent of joint or nerve damage, pre trauma fitness level, rehabilitation style etc etc. In my own case I initially did isometric thigh exercises and used an electrical muscle stimulator to maintain bulk and strength. I am now walking on the Malvern Hills and cycling as well as doing other specific strength exercises. If you are worried about issues with your muscles please contact us at the clinic.

The Roots guide to a summer of well-dressed salad from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop With a new season of lovely fresh leaves, first from our greenhouse and then from the fields, now is the time to re-fresh your store cupboard ingredients! Then you will be ready to dress those freshly picked salads with equally delicious, fresh and light dressings complementing their delicious characters. Good quality oils and vinegars will happily store for the season in a cool larder. I do insist on freshly ground black pepper and ideally sea salt flakes for seasoning, that can be satisfyingly scrunched between your fingers with a flourish! The easiest, no fuss way of making these dressings, in the time that it takes to spin a salad, is to shake them up in a clean jam jar. Begin by placing all the ingredients except the oils into the jam jar and give an initial shake, then add the oils and shake vigorously to emulsify the ingredients. A fresh and light dressing for a ‘naked salad’, bright and lemony, good for all leaves, thinly sliced vegetables, or beans. Add a little mustard or chopped mint if you like, especially good with radish and broad beans. 120ml olive oil Zest of a lemon 2 tbsp lemon juice Pinch of caster sugar Salt & Pepper to taste A rich and earthy dressing, good for leaves, lentils or roasted vegetables (fresh, new season beetroot in particular). 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil 1 tbsp red wine vinegar Pinch caster sugar Salt & Pepper to taste

A creamy, mustard dressing for soft leaves, delicious accompaniment to smoked ham, nuts and thin shaving of nutty cheese such as Gruyere or Emmental. 2 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tsp lemon juice 1tbsp red wine vinegar 2 tbsp crème fraiche 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp walnut oil Salt & pepper to taste Homemade Mayonnaise – Now you are confident with simple dressings, I encourage you to have a go at making this mayonnaise. The absolute key is freshly laid eggs, seek them out at your local farm shop and ask when they were laid (you need an egg that is no more than a day old). Supermarket eggs, even if they are organic or free range will not be fresh enough. 2 egg yolks (at room temperature) 2 tsps white wine vinegar ½ tsp salt 150ml sunflower oil 150ml olive oil In a bowl, lightly whisk the egg yolks, vinegar and salt. Continue whisking as you add a few drops of oil at a time, incorporating each drop as you go. When you have added a similar volume of oil to egg yolk you can add the oil a little more quickly as the emulsion will be more stable. Home-made mayonnaise will keep, covered, in the fridge for up to a week.

Well-Being

THE FOLD CARE FARM… HELPING PEOPLE TO GROW Spring is in full flow, bringing tree blossom, wild flowers and seedlings flourishing in the greenhouse. This has created the ideal time to reopen our Care Farm provision at The Fold. The Care Farm reopened at the end of March and runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. At The Fold Care Farm we offer meaningful land-based activities for people with a range of backgrounds and support needs, including those with learning difficulties, individuals with mental health issues, those living with dementia and people who are excluded or disengaged. We work with Care Farm participants on all aspects of organic food production from compost making, seed sowing and propagation to transplanting, weeding and harvesting. We also enjoy creating crafts from natural materials such as willow and wood, cooking and preserving farm produce, as well as going on nature walks to spot local wildlife. The Fold farm offers a green, calm and peaceful place to be, where everyone can feel welcome and be supported to learn new skills and meet new people. The Care Farm runs all year round; we have plenty of warm, covered spaces to take shelter from the cold and wet weather when needed, and enjoy cooking and crafts that celebrate the seasonal changes. Participants are able to come either independently or with a support worker/carer if needed. We offer accredited AQA qualifications for those who would like to work towards these, which we are able to tailor to the learners' needs. We have space for more participants who would like to come to The Fold Care Farm, as well as more volunteers to help support our provision. We offer free taster sessions to give people the opportunity to find out if it is a place they would enjoy. Anyone interested in coming to the Care Farm either as a participant or a volunteer can contact our Care Farm manager, Kate Broad, on carefarm@thefold.org.uk or call 01886 833 633.

We are looking for donations of waterproof coats and trousers, warm jumpers, wellington boots and sun hats. You can also find out more about the Care Farm on our website which has a link to the National Care Farming Initiative’s website. With our awareness of mental health issues rising, Care Farming, also talked about as ‘green care’ or ‘nature-based interventions,’ is becoming more widely known and has a growing body of evidence that supports the benefits it provides. The 2016 report commissioned by Natural England on Good Practice in Social Prescribing for Mental Health: The Role of Nature Based Interventions, finds that: "Nature based interventions provide multiple outcomes simultaneously and can help to increase mental health and well-being, increase physical activity levels, decrease social isolation, provide opportunities for learning and positive behaviour change and reconnect patients to other people – all this takes place in the natural environment, which in itself is known to provide additional health benefits." We would love to get more people involved with The Fold Care Farm – please help us by spreading the word to anyone you know who may be interested or may benefit from the provisions. Thank you for reading!

Sport

croquet

Situated six miles outside of Worcester, Broadwas Croquet Club offers an open invitation for new members. Gentle exercise, but strong on skill and strategy, croquet is a game for all. Last year, the club celebrated its 20th anniversary season. With nearly 60 members, four full size lawns and one half-lawn, this is a vibrant and friendly club with a thriving social and competitive calendar. For those of you familiar with the terms, there is both golf and association croquet, at all levels. Some members are happy to play in the afternoon roll-ups (informal social play) held on Tuesdays and Fridays – the Friday session includes the opportunity to play bowls. For the more ambitious, there are a series of internal competitions and the club is enrolled in five local leaques. There is always a warm welcome – tea, coffee, biscuits and, on a good day, cake. If you’d like to give it a try, just turn up on a Tuesday or Friday from about 1.30pm (flat soled shoes essential).

Walking Established more than 40 years ago, the Malvern Hills District Footpath Society is a friendly local group with an extensive programme of guided weekly walks. There are three guided walks per week, ranging from a 3-mile ‘Extra Easy’ walk with an optional pub lunch, to 12-mile ‘Strenuous’ walks. Most routes are within the Malvern Hills District area, but some go further afield to neighbouring counties. There is also an active social programme with club nights for skittles, talks, or quizzes. Every year at least one UK holiday is on offer for both walkers and non-walking companions. Everyone is welcome to attend a few walks before deciding whether or not to join membership is only £7. To find details about the upcoming walks, find the Walks button on the website or contact Betsy the Membership Secretary on (01684) 572047 or via email, betsy.brua101@gmail.com www.mhdfs.org.uk

Theatre News Willy Russell’s

educating rita David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers and Theatre by the Lake are delighted to announce that a major new stage production of Willy Russell’s Educating Rita will tour the UK in 2019. Starring Stephen Tompkinson as Frank, and introducing Jessica Johnson as Rita, the play will be directed by Max Roberts. Educating Rita tells the story of married hairdresser Rita, who enrols on an Open University course to expand her horizons, and her encounters with university tutor Frank. Frank is a frustrated poet, brilliant academic and dedicated drinker, who is less than enthusiastic about teaching Rita. However, Frank soon finds that his passion for literature is reignited by Rita, whose technical ability for the subject is limited by her lack of education, but whose enthusiasm Frank finds refreshing. The two soon realise how much they have to learn from each other. This hilarious and heart-warming comedy won the Olivier award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi award winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine. Educating Rita will be on stage at Malvern Theatres from Monday 5th – Saturday 10th August.

Competition
